Link: Myers Wants a Trophy and Another Receiver

Gary Myers predicts that the Jets will be playing for the Lombardi Trophy next year, and also has some suggestions for who the Jets should take in the Draft.

Now that the 2009 season is over, it’s time for our annual day-after look at what’s going to happen next season.

It would be just the Jets’ luck that after a 41-year Super Bowl drought they finally make the game and then have to deal with playing in Jerry Jones’ billion-dollar palace in Arlington with 80% of the 100,000 fans rooting against them.

What happens in one NFL season in the free-agent era usually is not a good forecaster for the next year – the Saints finished last in the NFC South in ‘08 – but with the restrictive changes in free agency in the upcoming and presumably uncapped year, player movement is going to slow down. That would allow teams a better opportunity to keep their rosters intact and build on strong finishes. Since free agency began in 1993, rosters have turned at about 30% per year.

The Jets and Cowboys each finished the regular season on a hot streak. The Jets won five of their last six games, then beat the Bengals and Chargers on the road in the playoffs and had a 17-6 lead two minutes before the half in the AFC Championship Game before Peyton Manning stepped on the gas.

That gives Rex Ryan something to build on as long as he can control himself and not flip off any more fans in the offseason. Mark Sanchez took a giant step in the playoffs and if Leon Washington is able to rebound from his broken leg and Mike Tannenbaum can find Sanchez a big-time receiver in the draft (Notre Dame’s Golden Tate or USC’s Damien Williams), then the Jets should be able to open up the offense.

I get why offensive skill position players are always sexy options for pundits. I love Myers, in that “you’re endearing in your feeble-mindedness” way but this is just bad football economics for the Jets, in my opinion. Could the Jets use a playmaking WR? Sure, but it’s like ordering a steak along with an all you can eat dinner buffet. Why would you do it?

In my mind, only if they are forced to give up Leon or Braylon FIRST via the RFA tendering process to another team (and then get extra draft picks) would they draft someone high like Tate or Williams. The Jets proved they can find talent late (see Stuckey, Chansi), so with corner and the lines needing help, there’s other priorities right now.

Final Eight/Four restrictions on free agents for this team, along with a semi-depleted larder of draft picks from the Edwards trade — there’s other more urgent needs. Factor in that the Jets used three of it’s four first picks since 2008 on offense (Keller, Sanchez, Greene — all targeted trade-ups too by the way) it seems that even though the defense was great in 2009, some of it was done with smoke and mirrors, and the unit needs some depth and upgrades.

A playmaking receiver? Don’t the Jets have three such capable individuals in Cotchery, Edwards and Keller? And don’t forget the flex-able Leon Washington!

The Jets ran the ball 607 times in 2009, that was 82 times more than the Panthers, the second team. The last time that a team ran as much during the season was the 2004 Pittsburgh Steelers with 618 attempts. Sure, the Jets will look to throttle those numbers back, as they’re unsustainable from an injury perspective, but I’m sorry, drafting another receiver on team that Ryan has made clear is going to run the ball as much as the Jets will, seems like bad economic priciples to me.

  1. myers also said in todays ny daily news…

“the colts decision to short-circuit their chance at an undefeated season by forfeiting against the jets clearly backfired. It was all designed to keep them healthy going into the postseason and give them the best chance to win the super bowl. In the end they didnt get to 16-0 and they didnt get the lombardi trophy.”

would love to know how resting his starters in 2nd half vs jets and most of game vs bills had anything to do with losing last nights game…..

  2. Gary Myers is slowly creeping up on my (2nd to Peter King) list of people I would like to punch in the chest and watch the air and life leak out of their body…..as I laugh at them.

  3. drew……most times i am cool with peter king actually…

myers writes for a ny paper….and sometimes says some pretty ignorant things about the locals…

and that statement above is beyond ignorant!!!

  4. Myers is losing it. With few exceptions, rookie WR’s are not impact players, so I fail to see how adding one is going to transform the offense. Whether the offense opens up more next season will have far more to do with the maturation of Sanchez than anything else.

As for the decision to rest their starters backfiring, it’s laughable how Myers says “it clearly backfired”. How? It would have backfired had they not won the AFC Championship. They did, so how should it matter? Well, it matters because Myers says it matters.

Really, this guy is a no-talent hack.

  5. Klecko71

Its called a joke bud……didnt mean to offend you.

  6. If you were talking about my ignorant statement…if you were talking about myers dumb statement……totally agree, obviously!!

    lol

  7. The way RBs get injured in the NFL, I would think that RB has to be as much of a target as WR, especially because all 3 RBs ended their seasons with injuries. I hope that the 1st rounder yields a pass rusher, but in a year where there are a number of quality big backs that could potentially play FB or be a single setback, the value in the draft might be at RB, not WR. And, while the Jets still have Faneca around, maybe the best run-blocking LG that I’ve ever seen not named “John Hannah,” a constant between the tackles threat at RB is more important than a WR, who may never get on the field.

  8. Enough of the talk about slot receivers and Brandon Marshall.

We made the AFC championship, we have no glaring holes. Draft Best Avalable or at least go for another cornerback.

  9. The Jets have consistently done the opposite of what Myers tells them they should do (which is why he never stops complaining) and now he has them winning the Superbowl next year. Clearly doing the opposite of what he says is the best way to build a contender. By definition, the Jets should therefore continue to do the opposite of what he is saying and not spend valuable resources on another receiver.

  10. I would definitely draft another big beefy running back in the draft to run behind Shonne and Leon. We are going to continue to be a run first offense. Priority right now is to build that defense to an all-time great status. Draft corner and pass rusher unless you can get one in free agency.

  11. why would he think 80% of the fans would be rooting against us? fans love the underdog in the superbowl. look – peyton manning is perhaps the most popular player in the leage and it was like he was playing a road game last night. im sure if/when the jets ever do make it to the big game, most of the building would be rooting for us.

  12. I actually want to know who at the Daily News thinks that Myers is worthy of one of their top NFL reporter slots. He has less knowledge about the game than most of the fans I know personally, and he’s always making ridiculous assumptions and claims and usually turns out wrong (I call this the “Woody Paige Strategy of Journalism” where you constantly pick outrageous upsets, or trades or whatever and when you’re wrong you just shrug and go “hey…it had no shot to begin with” and if you’re right you make sure people know you are a genius).

  13. ha drew…i was talking about myers statement…. but i do generally like peter kings stuff…

he has made some stupid comments also, nobody is perfect….but i respect him more then anyone else in terms of nfl coverage and opinions,…

thought myers was ok….have some friends who work for YES and he does their nfl show, and they say he says some lame things on that show as well…

but that statement of their plan clearly backfiring is pretty ignorant….

  14. I concur with you on the ” feeble-mindedness” part, however, I just can’t seem to find that love you speak of, for an incompetent writer (used loosely in this case) who doesn’t bother to think first before typing.

I guess “the Jets will suck again” articles aren’t going to work this off season — congratulations to Gary for actually realizing that — so he needs to find a new approach. That new approach obviously hasn’t included doing much research (unless the research includes reading Kiper’s mock and going with his choice).

How he figured that more than a month after the fact, rested players would be negatively impacted, is beyond me.

    Basset,
I couldn’t agree more with your assessment; choosing a receiver with a high pick is a luxury we can’t afford. Especially with the need for young DL players, a pass rusher and a shut down cb at the top of our list (not to mention depth on the OL). Even if we were to choose a receiver, Tate is a poor choice for a team whose receivers need to be skilled blockers far more than crisp route runners.

Would it be inappropriate for Rex to flip off a senile local beat writer?

    klecko71,
    What do you mean “sometimes”?

    Ferraro41,
Not “losing it”, lost it many years ago.

  15. Meyers is bad but you also have Florio, Lombardi, Peter King. If fatcessa had a column i would put him in that group as well

  16. when peter king called jets fans out for not showing up for favre’s first preseason game at the meadowlands last august that just about did it for me. what a joke

  17. There are several ways we could go and I don’t see why WR isn’t one of them. Good teams draft for the way the board falls, not for the necessarily biggest position of need. The way things are looking, the position that will have the greatest amount of talent left near our pick (and really, the one thing we shouldn’t do is trade up) would be WR. Considering we really can’t sign any FA’s, OL, DL, OLB, CB, RB, and WR wouldn’t be bad places to go with our picks (S if we do happen to get rid of Rhodes), but of course, more than likely the only positions where people should be able to make meaningful contributions next year would be DL, OLB, CB, and WR so I’d think that’d be a good place to look. The tricky thing about DL and OLB though is that there are a ton of 3-4 teams picking right before us in the draft so more than likely the guys that have the defensive skill sets for those positions will be taken. So, again, I don’t see the issue with taking a WR especially considering we shouldn’t put so much faith in Braylon, Braylon drops too many balls to be trusted, he’s not locked up long-term and we have more meaningful contributors we’ll need to lock up soon, the corners that will likely be available at our pick are a bit overrated, and, at the very least, we need a real third wide receiver (sorry Brad Smith).

  18. I would assume Rex would follow what they did in Baltimore ….. they usually drafted best available player in the furst 2 rounds….. this seems to have worked for Ozzie Newsome for years.

We have went out and targeted players (which has worked for a few years now) but i would agree with PA Matt and draft the best avaiable player…. hopefully a pass rusher

  19. Bent,

Going against Myers has always been a positive. He is about to get something right this coming season though. The Jets WILL win the superbowl.

For someone who has been wrong as often as Gary, eventually the odds of lucking into the right choice will catch up to him.

  20. ha good one tanny….

agree unless the next crabtree is in this draft at 29, which he aint….we dont need a WR…

i say we go CB at that pick….who can learn from the best in revis…. with can try to find a sleeper later at WR who can help us…. i am all for seeing what it would take to sign lance moore, since he has kind of proven himself….

  21. Competely agree, Edward will be here, another reciever for a run first offense is silly. I don’t even think we need a “slot third down” type, Keller is supposed to be that player.

If anything, I would draft a blocking TE on day three that actually has a shot to catch a ball on third down so Keller can line up in the slot.

Feel strongly first and second rounds will be defense, possibly two pass rush specialist types.

And please draft a punter on day three.

  22. Wasn’t Myers a woman ???

I thought he had sex change once & tried to reverse it years later..

Clearly he/she is a confuse wanbee sports writer.

  23. Nick, I agree with you about OL, DL, OLB, CB, but WR and RB are unnecessary unless in the later rounds. WRs rarely make a major impact in their first year and are more of a gamble than other positions. We can find a 3rd WR at the end of the draft or free agency on the cheap — we will be able to sign a free agent or 2 even with these new rules.

I agree that CB doesn’t seem to be a great value at 29, as it stands now.

Drew, Tanny’s m.o. has been to find value at a position of need, then move up or stay pat to acquire them. His first year he set up the offense. Value fell to him, but he was trying to build the 3 key offensive positions: LT, C and QB. The following year he built the defense by moving up to get Revis and Harris, both of whom were considered to be value on their board at the positons that they were taken.

There is no reason to think that Tanny wouldn’t move up to acquire a position of need using next years picks. Nor is there reason to believe that he would take a player of lesser priority because he is value at 29, rather than moving down, getting value, need and a extra pick in doing so.

  24. The Jets have a big play receiver on their roster and his name is Braylon Edwards. Seriously, he’s got to be the most slept on player on the Jets roster.

Braylon Edwards was targeted only 70 times all year. There are 27 receivers in the league who had at least seventy receptions over the course of the regular season, much less targets. The problem with Braylon Edwards this past year was lack of opportunity, and what should anyone expect with the most run heavy team in the league, a rookie QB, and the fact that he was basically thrown into the mix a quarter through the season.

Mark it down, Braylon Edwards in ‘10 will be the first double digit TD receiver for the Jets since Moss in ‘03.

  25. Bassett – someone has to mention what a great line you had: “I love Myers, in that “you’re endearing in your feeble-mindedness” way”!

Although when I read the first three words, I momentarily thought that fatherhood/lack of sleep was affecting your brain! And if it is, don’t sweat it, it gets better with time (or you somehow get used to it, as unbelievable as that may seem to you right now).

However, if you ever do catch yourself loving myers, it is clearly time to visit your local emergency room.

  26. Draft CB, DL or best available , but hey difference next year will be addition of impact NT and a playmaking RB/Slot guy , when Leon and Kris come back, that plus Sanchez with one whole year and another offseason/training camp alone should be enough improvment

  27. Sackdance – I wouldn’t cry if the Jets drafted a RB with the first pick if he was clearly BPA, but as there seem to be many available in this draft, I’d prefer they address that later in the draft or even in FA/waivers. I guess you’d prefer the stud WILL before RB, too. I wouldn’t mind a later 2nd day pick on a RB if someone slips through the cracks.

  28. klecko71, I think Tanny will target a CB, but I’m not sure it will be in the first round. He might also get a good one through free agency or trade.

I know it doesn’t seem possible with these uncapped rules on the final four, but it seemed impossible to get all the players we did and still fit under the restrictive cap, in the past. Yet Mike T found a way.

I have faith that he will find a way to get what we need in ways that none of us have figured out yet.

  29. how many RBs are we going to keep on the roster – remember we have Leon coming back and already have TJ, Greene,T-Rich, Woodhead and Washington on the 53 man. I assume if a RB is drafted at least 1 of these guys would have to go

  30. brian,

I think we all already know the answer: Bye bye Woodhead & Chauncey.

  31. originalJetFan,

You’re absolutely right that getting Kris and Leon back will upgrade the team. Kris, in particular, is impossible to replace. Pouha did a nice job of holding the fort, but I wouldn’t want to rely too heavily on a repeat performance. But can we expect all our players to remain healthy?

Other than replacing Lito, we can survive with our current starters (though I would love to see an upgrade over BT). It is depth that is key. Even if Kris stays healthy, we have 3 30+year old players starting on that line. Devito is the only one I would feel comfortable with replacing a starting DL. DL depth is critical, as is OL and CB depth.

We have to assume that we will loose a few key players to injury again next year.

  32. Woodhead might work exclusively at WR and on special teams. He now has an off season and training camp to learn the position.

He might be our next slot receiver.

  33. watch it tanny….i stated that on another post and got slaughtered by a few people for thinking woodhead has the talent to be a slot guy =)

  34. Can we all agree not to rely on “Danny Woodhead Superhero” to be our slot receiver next year? The guy’s been a receiver for like half a season and people want to assume that we can use him next year. This isn’t directed at you, TannyVision, but your post reminded me of how many people are singing this kid’s praises when he’s done exactly nothing at the position. Because he’s little and white people see Wes Welker.

  35. right on cue brandan =) all we are saying is give him a real look….which hopefully this summer he gets.

  36. I agree that health will be a major concern for us next year. I believe if we can stay healthy throughout the season we can have a great year and make it to the superbowl.

Look at the Saints they won the Superbowl mainly because their team was entirely healthy. If Bob Sanders and Dwight Freeny are both healthy who’s to say the Colts don’t win that game.

Injury’s kiled us in the Championship game, If were healthy i believe were in the Superbowl.

As far as the Draft i have full faith that Tanny will make all the right moves. He’s had awesome drafts since hes been here allbeit that year Mangenius got all lovey dovey for Gholston and Shlegal (worst picks ever!). I like Perrish Cox alot and i have all the faith he’ll do what he has to do to get him.

  37. this is what i think, the jets either stay with david clowney or sign another 3rd WR. Re-sign TJ and Leon washington. Get a pass rusher *caugh* Julius Peppers. get another good CB on the other side of Revis= New York Jets Super Bowl 45 Champs

  38. What do the Jets have like four or five picks? If they hit on three of them they will do fantastic. They need to work on developing some of the guys they have.

If Lowery can improve a bit more, then they are going to be even better. If they can get Gholston into any kind of a DE, because it seems they are going to try to put weight on him an make him strictly a push the pocket DE who commands a double team, that would be fantastic. Slauson, if he turns out to be a good project then that aids some of the woes about line depth.

For the draft the Jets do need skill positions. However I think this fascination with Tate and Williams is misguided. 1st round receivers have an incredibly high bust rate.

On a side note, guys forget about Peppers, as long as there is an uncapped year, the rules prohibit him from coming here. so forget about it. It will not happen

  39. Im not ready to give up on Clowney, especially after 1 season in an offense who barely threw the ball. Woodhead as a slot receiver seems like a pipe dream at the moment, but ya never know.

I’ve gotten to the point where I trust Mike Tannenbaum to make all of the right personnel moves, I expect we will be in great shape for next season.

  40. Haha, touche, Klecko.

I know I’m a broken record, but I feel the same is true for the opposite side of this discussion.

Either way, I would be happily proved wrong here (and not in the Benigno “I’ll call for doom so if I’m wrong it’s the best thing ever” way) because I do like the kid. It’s hard not to like an underdog being a Jets fan. But if I have to hear about Woodhead “needing to get his chance” for the next 8+ months I may rip my eardrums out of my head.

I’m just trying to temper expectations, as people seem to think that if given the chance he’s going to be a great WR (when he’s played it for less than a 1/2 season).

  41. clowney really didnt get a shot to show us what he could do this year. we had a rookie QB, a new #1 WR, and an offense that led the leage in rushing. also for as good as schotty was late in the year, the middle of the year was incredibly inconsistent in the play calling.

next year is the make or break year for him.

  42. JetSetRadio, I think you’re right. If healthy, this team has a very legitimate shot at the superbowl. I think we can withstand a few injuries too, but not of the magnitude of Jenks and Leon. The point of this draft is to ensure that we don’t lose too much with a replacement, should a starter goes done.

Gholston and Shlegal were the only real major mistakes Tanny has made. Not just drafting, but using his draft picks, a la trades for Jenks and TJ. Even the Favre and Lito gambles were solid, the results however weren’t. Favre proved he was worth a 4th, just not for us.

  43. Hey Brendan, why do you say “white people see Welker”? Do you know the color of every person on this blog. Maybe just people in general like Woodhead because he is small and has potential.

  44. Brendon, I don’t think that Danny is a superhero (didn’t think Wayne was either, until I was proven wrong). I just think that with an off season to focus on the position, he is an option. Smith is still improving and I don’t dismiss him as an option, as you do. I think Leon in the slot is a legitimate option too.

What I’m saying is that we have a few options already for a position that will not be as important for us as it might be for others. Edwards, Cotch and Keller are our targets and the running game is of paramount importance, so slot receiver at a high pick is a luxury. One we can’t afford, for now.

  45. As has already been noted, Woodhead is now a receiver, but I guess that I’m the only one that sees question marks at RB:

    Thomas Jones-declined over 2nd half of the season, had over 1500 carries over the past 5 years, the running game suffered against the Colts when he spelled Greene, casting doubt on his effectiveness as a back up and 32 is “old” for an RB…LT and Shaun Alexander were both done at 30 after similar workloads, the fact that Jones was a late bloomer only prolongs the inevitable;

    Leon Washington-coming off of severe knee injury, not a “between the tackles” RB, would break down if he had to carry the ball 20 times a game, best role is as the Jets’ Kevin Faulk;

    Shonn Greene-nagging injuries his rookie season cast doubt on whether he’s durable enough for 300 carries and he seemed to overcome fumbling issues, but still a concern and he needs to get better catching passes and blocking….still a work in progress, by no means a finished product;

Chauncey Washington-a huge question mark, injury and academic issues clouded his years at USC. He’s a big back and may have FB potential, but who knows what he’s capable of?

Tony Richardson-the Julio Franco of FBs, but even Julio had to retire…the Jets need to groom a replacement, NOW!

Given that the Jets running game is uber-important for any serious playoff run, IMO, the RB/FB depth is thin with a bunch of question marks. At some point in the draft or by other means, the Jets need to get some quality depth (I have a soft spot for Toby Gerhart…maybe in the 2nd round if he’s still there?).

  46. Klecko,

I stand along side you in the face of present danger.

With your brawn and my ability to recruit more bodies and fit under the salary cap, we should be able to hold off the mob.

  47. Personally, I’m a huge fan of Jerricho Cotchery. He was in the top-five early in the season but dropped out due to his injury followed by growing pains from his rookie quarterback. As Sanchez improves, so does Cotchery.

My top priority is very undazzling. I’d like to the Jets acquire a very versatile offensive lineman. The number six guy who can play any position on the line, the first guy in after an injury. The odds of the Jets going three straight years without a significant injury on the O-line are probably pretty slim.

  48. i am with you tanny……see you in cortland for the camps!!!

  49. I don’t think WR or RB is a need. A slot WR would be nice, and if a high-grade one drops to us I’m all for it, but if Leon’s healthy, that need is minimized. And RB is only a need if TJ and T-Rich both split. CB and DE/OLB are the places to go, and if Kerry is gone, a FS comes before offense as well.

  50. SD99, I think your rb concerns are fair, yet I still think you should relax and stop worrying so much. We can’t afford to have a contingency for everything on a 53 man roster, so having 5 deep studs at every position is not possible.

TJ being over 30, or being a late bloomer, is far less important than the way he’s maintained his body conditioning year-round his entire career. He’s not given nearly enough credit for the extraordinary way he’s approached that. Noone can avoid injuries under all circumstances, and he was hobbled at the end of the season, but he is still a viable rusher and he and Greene splitting carries more evenly, should help him further. Same is true with Greene benefiting from TJ’s presence. With the return of Leon we can withstand nagging injuries.

    Peter Pan (TRich) is indestructable!

  51. I would agree that we have some question marks at RB and are thin at FB. But there will be plenty of RBs available, both in late rounds and in FA and after cutdowns. I wouldn’t use an early draft pick unless he was the unquestionable BPA. IOW, if there is a quality RB, DB and OL or DL available in round 2 and the difference (in terms of how they are rated) isn’t great, I wouldn’t go for the RB. I just think what while there are question marks surrounding all 3 (TJ – age, Leon & Green – durability) it is unlikely we have problems with all 3 and the question marks are themselves murky in TJ’s case. If TJ doesn’t have to carry such a big load, he very likely will not wear down at the end of the year (plus, he was injured, who’s to say he wears down if he doesn’t get injured?). If Greene and Leon are also both not shouldering big loads, their durability concerns should not be such big issues (especially after a pro offseason for Greene).
In this uncapped year we should take advantage of being able to keep TJ (a guy we would surely cut for salary purposes in a normal year) and use a high pick on a RB next year after some of these questions are answered. I’d like to address FB depth, but I think we might be able to do so outside of the draft. Now if a quality player unexpectedly drops and falls into our lap on draft day 1, that’s a different story.

  52. Jesus, Tannenbaum is god! (pardon the sacrilege). He is my guiding light too.

JDB, I agree with you about Lowery. I’m not sure whether he will eventually settle into CB, NB or Safety but I do think he has a solid future with this team.

    Gholston I’m not counting on.

Slauson is anybody’s guess. None of us has seen enough of him to know if he’s a keeper. Where/If they draft a Olineman, we will probably know what the coaching staff thinks of him.

I’m not for tying up that much money on Peppers (he won’t sign for a 1 year deal), but if he is franchised, we can sign him for any cost — at least from my understanding of the uncapped year rules.

  53. The NYC Parking Expert,

    +1

  54. Tanny –

    “+1″

    huh?

  55. JDB – including compensatory picks, the Jets will have at least 6, maybe more.

  56. NYCPE,

    I second your post. (+1)

  57. Tanny – if Peppers is franchised, the Jets could sign him, but the compensation is two first rounders, unless he was given a transition tag (but they’d have absolutely nothing to gain by doing that).

  58. I’m just flagging an issue. If Shonn Greene goes down, I am very uncomfortable with Jones and Washington as the RBs. I know that Jones is a conditioning wonder, but biology is what it is. As you get older, injuries get harder to overcome and speed/quickness detiorates. That’s the natural aging process. Plus, Jones has never been a good second-level threat. I’m just not confident that he can be a consistent positive force in the running game anymore. As for Leon, he just can’t take a “between the tackles” pounding. When the running game is so important, the Jets just can’t get caught short at this vital position. Plus, I think there will be great value at RB in the second round, especially in the “big back” category, but there’s so many of them that there’s a chance the Jets could trade down, get more picks (especially a 3rd and 4th rounder) and still get a good big back. That being said, I’m a Toby Gerhart fan and think that he’d be a great fit for what Rex wants as a “Jets football player” and he may be there when the Jets pick in the late 2nd round or even later if the Jets trade down.

  59. SD99,

My daughter goes to Stanford and she says that Toby is cool. She also says that he has a hot body, for all that’s worth.

I’m not sure she knows what a rb’s responsibilities are, but she’s seen him play many times and thinks the Jets should draft him.

If it makes my daughter happy, I’m with you all the way buddy.

  60. If the Jets get Terrence Cody or Donovan Warren, then I’m happy.

  61. Terrence Cody will be available to the Jets. The question is wether it is worth risking one of our few available draft picks on a guy who has proved not to be able to control his weight. Cody is a boom or bust pick, and unless we trade Rhodes for draft picks (which is a bad idea anyway) I don’t see us using any of our first day picks to try and land him.

  62. Bent,

I knew the price was high. Even transitional, I don’t think he would be worth the money he will command on the open market.

When do they announce the compensatory picks?

  63. Very surprised in the lack of interest in a legit pass rush threat, the single biggest need on this team.

  64. TV – towards the end of March (25th or thereabouts).

  65. His production is down. His price will be high over several years. He’ll be changing from a down lineman to the WILL for us.

  66. Bent, thanks

  67. Wolf,

Were you talking about Peppers or Cody?

Cody will be a run stuffer probably, not a rusher

  68. re-unite peppers and jenkins! the power that lead the panthers to the superbowl a few years ago against the patriots. that was a force then and would still be a force now!

i dont know if the panthers will franchise peppers, i hope not though. he could be the jets end, or who knows the jets may trade thomas for some pick and use him as an outside linebacker, even though that’d be a terrible idea. thomas is one of those players that does the dirty work that people rarely notice. if we were able to keep thomas as well as use peppers as the de itd be an even better situation.

then again guys… what happens if gholston turns out to be the next calvin pace? slow in developping, but still has amazing skill and potential to become an allstar later down the road. why give up on him already?

  69. I think we need to trade up in the first as there are no legit DB or DL that will be available in the late first. I also don’t think that a first round WR would be the best choice for a team that got beat opposite of Revis and had a tough time getting to the QB from the DL that we have. They did a great job opening holes up for everyone else but we need a bigger threat and some youth in an aging line. Anywhere between 17-24 would be where the jets would need to find themselves in order to get a good, needed pick.

As for the WR position we do need a good slot receiver/ a good 3rd receiver. I think wasting a 1st round pick on Tate or Williams is not what the Jets need. However, I do believe that a 2nd round pick would be the smartest decision and if it were possible to pick up Jordan Shipley. He is a very smart, mature, underrated receiver. He spent 6 years at Texas, is now 24, and has an ability to find the open space. As all great receivers do finding the open space will bring success as a WR (Ward, Holmes, Welker). JSHIP does not get enough credit but after watching him against Alabama with a freshmen QB, against the best defense, he really made a name for himself in my book. If we want to win NOW then I think Ship would be a great fit for us as he is ready to play in the NFL, TODAY.

    SAINTS HEALTH:
I was watching a Saints game earlier in the year and the commentator kept on talking about a special mouthguard the Sean Payton makes them wear. It’s supposed to boost strength in the weight room, increase flexibility, and ultimately make it harder for players to get hurt/injured. The mouthguard is supposed to keep the spine in perfect shape in order to do all of these things. Perhaps with the health of the Saints this year and the unlucky events of Jets players, maybe they should do the same and turn the luck around.

  70. I like Myers in that “dunderheaded, band wagon jumping, about as visionary as my nine-month old granddaughter way.”

This is the price of success, people. Get used to it.

We’re going to get a lot of Super Bowl picks from nitwits who’s good opinion we never wished for, and who’s acquaintance with anything resembling thoughtful analysis comes from reading authentic journalists in other newspapers. Personally, I cringe at the idea that Myers, Lupica, et al, like the Jets. They’ll be the first ones off the ship at the slightest sign of weakness or trouble. By the end of next year, whoever is the flavor of the month will be their collective vision of the future. They don’t have taste. They’re like moths. The Jets are this week’s shiny object. I can only hope they venture too close to the flame.

  71. I believe there are plenty of options this year in FA / waiver wire to grab a third WR. A healthy Leon and Edwards for a full season will definitely result in a better offense. Not to mention “the Greene Machine” taking the bigger of the loads. I think we need to hang onto TJ as it makes too much sense to ride him through his contract. If he wants out we can look to fill that hole with another bruiser back. Clearly the 2nd TE and FB are concerns of mine at this time. I’d like to see the progression of Slauson and perhaps look to draft another solid O-lineman.

On defense I think we can use at least one player at each level. My priority would be to go with an OLB in RD 1. I love Brandon Spikes on this team. I just have a feeling he will be the real deal. With the great play of Devito and Pouha I dont think the D-Line is a huge concern but wouldn’t hurt to see whats out there late. My 2nd RD position would be to address the DB position opposite Revis. However I dont think Rex would go into 2010 with a rookie at CB so look for another FA/Waiver Pickup.

  72. dmazz- I agree with you but Spikes is a ILB, not a pass rushing WOLB in the 3-4

Good recievers can be found in the middle rds ( Jerry Rice, Steve Smith, OchoCinco , T.O and many more!!!!)

You dont have to take a reciever in round one when the reason you didnt win the whole thing was because you needed a pass rusher and some better man corners!!!!

Brandon Graham, Jerry Hughes or Ricky Sapp por favor

  73. LOL Andrew Wiess

  74. Wow havent posted on this blog in a minute.. Okay, first let me just ride the “Danny Woodhead isn’t a slot receiver” train….. Really do you guys need to be reminded of all the good-luck stories that take fold of every team in all sports. Is it good material, sure… is it heart felt, maybe… depending on if its your team or not, but man get real! Did you see the kid when he got in the Colts game… yup, took a hand-off and got smacked real f@$king hard and never got back in. He’s a pre-season wonder and it happens every year…

Sackdance, call me discriminating, racist, or bias… But besides Mike Alstott, Riggins, Czonka, and Moose Johnson their hasnt been many successful “White RB’s”.

Maybe its me but I like my money Green, my woman sexy, my QB’s white and my RB’s black….. And I’m a black guy. Now Sanchez may fall into that Dan Fouts category of “maybe”, but thats reality!

Been reading a lot of post to keep me entertained and this is my conclusion….

We wont be as nearly as aggressive in FA as in years past, but this is an uncapped year, meaning that many teams will cut ties on many high priced and big name players. Now by rule we cant sign any of the regular FA’s that have been in the league 5-6yrs, but those that are cut will be fair game. And there will be many to go around. Gotta give Tanny credit, he will manipulate every rule to the least common denominator w/o getting penalized to make sure we get what we need. And I dont think anything will change that. So we should be good. Thats why I think that CB will be the need ans the kid from OKstate will be the choice.. He reminds me of Antonio Cromartie from the Chargers, Tall, Fast, and Versatile. Would love to see Brandon Graham there, but we’ll pick up A. Thomas, J.Porter or someone like that. I would really love to trade down and acquire more picks and get one of the Top 10 picks in the 2nd round and pick up a 3rd rounder in the process. Drafting a RB is a need to which many disagree.. You just dont know how Leon’s gonna respond from a career threatning injury.

Also would love that kid Vladimir Duchasse from UMASS. Big guy, strong as hell and versatile. We need to address the O-line and stop waiting for the 6th and 7th rounds hoping to grow a rose from the concrete.

  75. RJF

LOL…funny stuff I completely agree on Woodhead

I agree that we will probably pick Adalius Thomas, and I know we need a corner, but in the words of Ernie Accorsi, YOU CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH PASS RUSHERS

If Graham or Hughes is available at that spot, unless we move up or down, WE HAVE TO TAKE THEM

  76. Eddie – agree about not wanting a WR with #1, and prefer a pass rushing OLB or DE. I would add Kindle to list as there is a chance he slips.

fyi – Jerry Rice was a 1st rd pick, chad johnson a 2

  77. Mamy have argued about TJ and how he shutdowned in the postseason. But you have to understand that he wont have a prayer running for 1400yds this season. He may get a little more than 300 carries, maybe less.. But the wealth will be shared evenly. Like I said, my only concern is Leon? I mean he says that he’s getting close and that he’s ahead of schedule, but what else do you want him to say.. The guy left good money on the table and took a shot in the dark on this season. His luck didnt pay off and here we are today.. As far as i’m concerned TJ isnt my main priority. That 5mil roster bonus is chump change. Let Shonn get another full season under his belt and then turn it over to him.

I’m on the short list, but I like Braylon;), It has to be frustrating breaking in a rookie qb w/ as little game experience as Sanchize. As much as Keller dropped passes this yr, Mark really didnt know how good Kells can be unil the playoff game. Now granted he runs a little slower than his combine #’s defined, but Keller will be nice. Everyone’s #’s were down this yr including Cotch, but I think you give Braylon, Cotch, and Kells a full offseason together, I guess sprinkle in a little Clowney and its not bad. Really can use Leon out of the backfield. Reestablishing the mismatch w/ the RB’s is a necessity. When he’s on his game Braylon is a Top 10 WR. Easily!

  78. RJF

Me and you are right on the same page.

I totally agree about woodhead, our WRs we have and even leon.

I was sayin all year, Leon was a huge loss to our pass game, how many times in the past have we seen Leon catch a 3 yard pass out of the backfield and take it 25+ yards.

If Leon comes back healthy i think we are set on our skill players. We just need to grab a few Linemen, another CB and a pass rusher to go with Pace. Pace playing a full 16 games should bring up his sack total too.

  79. Oh and for a D.

I think another year in this system will do wonders for many of the players.

Our D seemed to come on strong at the end of the year (though that always happens with a Rex Ryan D) alot of the little mistakes we made during the year will be cleaned up just by experience.

  80. we were one stud CB away from being AFC champs. there’s no way were drafting a WR in the first round.

  81. As I read this drivel written by Myers, I just couldn’t help but think that Gary is only stating his “Jets are SuperBowl bound” crap so he can write a negative article after a bad loss that ” many experts had this team as a Superbowl contender this year!”. Vegas has them as a 25-1 bet to win the big one. BTW – the Giants were just ahead of us.

    What a jack-hole !

  82. mel kiper is smart, very good at evaluating key positions at , which point a team is picking. jets pick 29th in this years draft. sanchez/revis are the jets playmakers. therefor surround these guys with good players, golden tate has great hands is physical, another cochery type player, perhaps a little faster..however having said that,i would,nt have a problem with a cb 1st round wr second round.

  83. RJF – “Did you see the kid when he got in the Colts game… yup, took a hand-off and got smacked real f@$king hard and never got back in.”

I hate to defend Woodhead because everyone jumps all over the comments as if I’m declaring him to be the next Walter Payton, so before I start I’d just like to say that Woodhead’s best value might simply be as a guy that can fill in at two positions, just in terms of lining up in the right spot and not making a mistake. Still, that can be a useful type of guy to have on the roster, or ready to call up from the practice squad, just in case.

I did want to address your comment though, because Woodhead was inactive in the Colts game, unless you are talking about the original Colts game, where he didn’t carry the ball, but did catch an eight yard pass. I wonder if – with Greene out – they would have used him at RB in the second game had he been active. At least on third downs, I’m sure they’d have put him in there to spell TJ.

    “He’s a pre-season wonder and it happens every year…”

Actually, he didn’t play last year in pre-season. This year was the first time he played because he was actually out injured all through his rookie year.

  84. I’m sorry dogomatic, but what!? Last year Kiper got 5 of the first round picks correct. FIVE. He may be good at evaluating talent, but he’s awful at identifying real team needs and properly predicting the direction they’ll go in.

  85. Stop with the Woodhead bashing. Guy takes big hits and gets right back up. He is younger than Welker and built in a similar mold. Only real question with Woodhead is whether he can play physically enough at the LOS to get space on his across the middle slant routes. He will have to work on getting seperation, route running, and he will need to be in the weight room all year. If he can do this, he can he our slot reciever, he has great hands.

  86. Wolf,

The only real question is if he can become an actual WR. It’s not bashing the kid, it’s being realistic. He played his entire life as a RB and is now trying to transition to WR. He’s not in the same mold as Welker. Welker’s talent is in how quickly he gets in and out of cuts to create space. Woodhead is extremely fast, but is a one-cut runner, meaning he makes his one cut and usually maximizes his yards in a straight burst. If he is going to be used solely as a WR, than he shouldn’t be gaining weight, either. I think Bent has his role accurately labeled as a player who can fill in at two positions and not much else. It’d be wonderful if he could develop into a player that the Jets can use, but to say it’s merely a question of him being able to beat a jamming CB is way off.

  87. There will be so many more guys available after cutdowns than usual this year, I’m sure we can grab a RB then from the waiver wire. I think it’s premature to worry too much about TJ’s age, it’s like a pre-emptive strike based on statistics, which can be misleading. Can the guy have a bad stretch (injuries don’t count) before we write him off? He got 1400 yards and 14TDS and was hurt for the last few games. I wouldn’t want him being my only good back, but with Greene, Leon and Brad Smith there to share the load, I think it’s just a no-brainer. Let’s fill real needs first, potential needs later.

  88. Woodhead is not an NFL caliber player!!! He does not belong in the NFL. He is not anywhere near the player Welker is, and never will be. I’m emabrassed to have him on my team.

  89. Ramble,

If you have Woodhead pegged so well as an NFL fraud, you should really let Rex and Tanny know that they’re screwing up with their talent evaluation skills. They obviuosly are under the impression that Danny is, at the least, capable of being a marginal player in this league.

I’m embarrassed to have a coach and GM who can’t tell the difference between an NFL caliber player and a beer-leaguer. Thank you for enlightening me.

  90. Normally I would read the Post and Daily News articles about the Jets and never log on to post a comment, for years. But this year Gary Myers got me so hot under the collar with his Jet bashing… until we beat San Diego of course, that I had to take the time to log on and rip him a new one. Its like… how does a Dolfin fan get to write in our paper about the Jets.

Aiside from that we need a pass rusher to complment the blitz packages that Rex runs.
