While Brian Schottenheimer wishes that he could have been up on the podium with the Jets, he told Canny of the NY Post that watching his close friend Drew Brees win the Lombardi Trophy was a close second.
After watching Drew Brees, one of his closest friends in the world, deliver his MVP performance in the Saints’ Super Bowl 31-17 victory over the Colts, the Jets offensive coordinator couldn’t contain his emotions.
Schottenheimer, who coached Brees in San Diego and has had a special bond with him ever since, told The Post in an exclusive interview moments after the game that seeing Brees win it all last night “is not better than if we [the Jets] won it, but it’s pretty darned close.
“The end is what really got me,” Schottenheimer said. “Seeing it brought tears to my eyes. There is not a better person in the NFL than Drew. My wife and I were pinging off the walls watching it.
“We couldn’t be happier for Drew. He’s been through so much this year, with his mother passing away and the birth of his baby boy. I loved watching the game, but the moment I’ll always remember the most is seeing him holding his baby boy, thinking to myself how much I’d love to do that one day.
“This guy has been beaten down, doubted and dealt with adversity,” Schottenheimer said
It’s a great story, and we hope that watching his good friend win one, will only focus him and Mark Sanchez into making it a reality for the Jets in 2010.

Stallworth was just cut by the Browns fyi. Not exactly the character guy you want, but if we’re thinking cheap, signable WRs he has to be in the conversation.
Also, correct me if I’m wrong, because he was cut and not just becoming a free agent we’re not restricted in signing him?
if schotty was aggressive with his play calling, maybe we could have been on that podium last night,i mean you have to give sean peytton credit for been aggressive, you cant play the colts conservative the way we played them, you have to step on their throats and that is what the saints did
Slightly off topic but are RSS feeds working for anyone else for this blog? I keep checking my RSS feeds and didn’t an update since “BGA: The Final Insult”. I was so pissed that I missed a lot of Jets news. I’m glad I hopped on the site to check anyway but the feeds aren’t working for me. Anyone else?
Good for Brees. He earned it, and so did NO.
OFF TOPIC: ARTICLE BY THE EXAMINER- INTERESTING INFO ON GIVING NEW CONTRACTS TO SOME OF OUR YOUNG STARS WITH THIS CBA ISSUE LOOMING!
TR: Of course have to ask the million, well multi-million, dollar question. It is no secret that the Jets are going to look to lock up Nick Mangold and Darrelle Revis long term. How would the Jets be able to go about that under the existing CBA?
JF: There is no restriction on teams from renegotiating the contracts of their current players in the uncapped year which is why both Mangold and Revis are rumored to seek new deals. The goal of the team is to give the players as much money as possible in the uncapped year to reduce their future cap costs in the event the cap returns. The only rule that is in place that dictates the amount of salary paid in 2010 is a rule where there can not be a decrease in salary of more than 50% from year 1 to year 2. If the
decrease is more than 50% it will be treated as a signing bonus and spread out over the life of the contract, which negates the benefit of paying the high salary in 2010. That rule will require the Jets to be careful with how much they spend in 2010. They will not want to pay Revis 40 million
dollars in 2010 and have the potential for a 20 million dollar salary on the cap books in 2011. If I had to guess I could see the Jets paying Mangold somewhere in the realm of a 14 million dollar salary in 2010 and Revis close to 20 million to drastically lower later cap costs. I would also think the team may approach David Harris and D’Brickashaw Ferguson about new contracts.
That’s a good interview with Jason, also available on JetNation.
I still think that the most logical thing to do with Revis (by some margin) is to extend him after the 2010 season. The only way extending him now makes sense is if he’s likely to cause a fuss, which with (effectively) 3 years left on his deal seems unreasonable. However, with 2011 and 2012 being option years, I don’t think they can advance him money to appease him (although he will probably cash in with escalators and/or performance related pay from the league).
BENT- what will be Revis’s cap number next season- was looking at their cap page and was a little confused by it. Most of his money this past year came from his roster bonus of 5.7mil. Does he have another roster bonus for next season that you know of? As it states right now, he is supposed to only have a cap value of just under 2mil. Dont see that low of a number happening.
Hey guys,
A couple weeks ago I made the Jets highlight video “Why Not Them?” and even though we aren’t Saints fans I know that we’re happy the Colts lost and most of us are happy for the city of New Orleans. Here is a short highlight video of last nights game with the remix of Jay-Z’s “Run This Town” that was played before the game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-Qk85V5czk
The video is entitled “Who Dat?”
Thanks, Go Jets!!
Revis is contractually entitled to only receive $2m of salary in 2010. His cap number will be higher (about $4m, I think), due to bonuses that have already been paid but not yet counted against the cap, but the cap number is irrelevant in an uncapped year. That site usually omits escalators and unlikely to be earned incentives, so it’s possible he will receive more, but the Jets can still offer him a deal that pays him more money in 2011 without bringing forward the date whereby they must pay him eight figures per year.
Maybe they’ll renegotiate now and have the extension not kick in until 2011. Who knows, maybe they will extend him now if there’s a way it will reduce cap charges into the future, but unless he is going to be a problem, it would make sense to focus on those other names first.
Sanchez is gonna bring N.Y a championship. I’M not just saying thiis. Don’t know how long it will take but he will.
Weirdly glad that Schotty will be back next season.

Anyone see Kerry Rhodes on Martha Stewart Friday? I found this clip online- love the dig he gets in on Sanchez at the end though i don’t think Martha really got it…
From what I hear, the cap is gone for good. If so, we’re probably in good shape for the future.
Jared Odrick , Patrick Robinson
I could live with Jared Odrick, not so sure about Pat Robinson
Shamik – “From what I hear, the cap is gone for good. If so, we’re probably in good shape for the future.”
If the cap is gone for good, I think that’s bad for the Jets. Some teams will spend unlimited amounts of money (Dallas, Washington) and ultimately end up with all the best players, much like the Yankees do in baseball.
The cap gives the Jets a competitive advantage because they manage it so well. With no cap, they would still have a competitive advantage over most small market teams, but they need to be on a level playing field with the best. Nobody wants to see the Superbowl monopolized by one or two teams for a long time.
Fortunately, I do think the cap will come back, as least in some form. I think it might be a “softer” cap, but the NFL will be a lot worse off without one.
In the short term, the Jets are fine (cap or no cap), but if there’s a year of no cap and then the cap returns (which looks the most likely scenario), then that’s the best case scenario IMO.
After hearing Baltimore’s owner go off on how no salary cap let’s the likes of the Yanks buy up all the talent, I would be surprised if there is no cap. He’s a very well respected owner and I would have to believe a lot of owners feel the same way as him.
Brendan
I am trying to not be offended as a Yankee fan….lol
I did hear Smith the new player union rep…say he has spoken to all the players that head the union ( Mawae, Brees etc…) He explained that they are all aware that players will lose thier jobs and careers based on the stance they will take once the salary cap leaves.
I am not sure how strong the players are but Smith seems ready to dig his heels in
Cap is necessary. Especially in this economy. Guys get paid enough as it is, stop playing games.
Hah I don’t know why you would be offended, it’s the truth. But hey, they play by the rules so you can’t fault them for the system they work within.
