Buzz: CFLer Ricky Foley to Announce Signing Soon?

While we wrote about the possibility that the Jets could sign CFL Rush End Ricky Foley, are the Jets one of his top teams and will we know whether the Jets sign him by the weekend? Could be according to Canada.com.

“There are three situations which are ideal,” [Foley's agent] Sheehy says. “It comes down to meshing opportunity for playing time and an opportunity to make an impact weighed against the contract opportunity. It’s a matter of doing what we think is right and not just going for the maximum dollars.”

Foley is scheduled to work out with the Seattle Seahawks today following a session with the San Diego Chargers on Monday.

The CFL’s most outstanding Canadian in 2009 was at the training facilities of the New York Jets, St. Louis Rams and Philadelphia Eagles last week.

“He’ll be in the NFL this year,” Sheehy says. “We’re closing in on a couple of things … and we should have it wrapped up by the end of the week.”

Sheehy also represents former Lion Cameron Wake, who received a reported $1-million bonus to sign with the Miami Dolphins last year.

At his size, Rams and Eagles (Johnson/Spags 4-3 system) might fit him well … but are the Jets and their 3-4/46 Mashup Defense the third team? I’m curious to know which would be the ideal situations that Sheehy speaks of for his player, and that would come down to knowing his game better (which I don’t), and whether or not the Jets would be an interesting option.

With that said, the Jets are running some monsters out there on the front seven right now (think Jenkins, Ellis, Pace, Thomas) so I don’t know just how much Foley could contribute, but the Jets have been able to get good production out of smaller sub-package players in the past … albeit under Mangini with the likes David Bowens. Rex Ryan tends to like to turn his guys loose, which I think Foley would relish, no matter his size.

Still, at that size, Foley seems an ideal pass-rusher, and could be a detriment in run stopping unless he’s playing ILB. But I think that the Jets have those two spots pretty much locked down between Scott and Harris

  1. Foley’s own agent admitted he is not as good of a player as C Wake but should be able to come in and play on special right away……

Seems like just another guy to me

  2. just another guy the jets might be interested in at the beginning of a LONG offseason :)

it’s the offseason, we’ll take any type of news, big or small! :D

  3. I read somewhere that the Patriots were very interested also.

Yea there will probably be alot of people we are looking at this offseason. But I enjoy it.

  4. Foley had 12 sacks and plays special teams. Could be a 3rd down specialist/special teams guy for the Jets.

  5. The best thing he has going for him is that he is not a UFA, so the Jets technically have no restriction to sign him.

  6. I am a BC Lions season ticket holder and a long time J-E-T-S fan here in Vancouver. This kid is over-hyped. He wasn’t a league all-star (although he was probably snubbed). He was the top “Canadian” in the CFL and not the top player in the CFL. That’s an important distinction! Cam Wake was a better player. I am way more excited about a guy like Jamaal Westerman who has tremendous upside.

  7. Thank you Bam Bam…

  8. One thing to keep in mind about Foley is that he was in Ravens camp in 2007. When he was cut, he went to B.C. So, Rex knows him and may know how he would use him. He’s not big enough for the DL (6-2, 245 lbs.), so he may project to the WILL/DE pass rush hybrid role that the Jets are sorely lacking. It looks like he moved around in the CFL from right to left and has good sideline-to-sideline speed. He also is too light for 4-3 DE, so I’m wondering what he would project to in the 4-3? In the NFL, he would be overpowered at the LOS by guards and tackles who would, on average, outweigh him by 50 lbs. It looks like he can’t play with his hand on the ground in the NFL.

  9. He’s Marques Murrell-sized. I guess that will be his role if he makes it. Sit on the bench, play a bit of special teams, throw the occasional punch…

  10. What could it possibly hurt…..as I have said in the pass…if Rex is interested defensively….Immmmm interested…..Keep getting Will OLBs into training camp and hope someone works out…its a huuugge need for this team.

  11. Thanks for info. I trust a knowledgeable guy like BamBam who actually saw him play.,

some film on foley before he went CFL

  13. i think it’s time to give Devito more pub. He will be a contributer next year.

  14. Yeah, he had a very good year. I’d go so far as to say he’s already a contributor.

  15. Devito was definitely a contributor this season. There’s no stat for it (that I’m aware of, but I’m sure some stathead has come up with one), but Devito collapsed the pocket constantly from his 3-4 end spot and even when he slid over to NT for passing downs. He’s a lunch pail guy and I love the fact that he’s progressed to the point that he has. Rex will maximize the kid’s abilities and he should be a very solid player for us for a while.
