Chris Berman blows. I’m pretty sure he was hammered during a couple of those episodes of Countdown this past season. You could practically smell the Knob Creek on his breath through the t.v. screen.
I think adding Donte Stallworth would be wise for the Jets, but it has to be at the right price. His last contract was 35mil over 5 yrs- 7mil ave.. I wouldn’t give him more that 3.5 per year for 2-3 years. He will be a definite upgrade as our #3 WR, established guy who for most of his time has been a #2 option, which is good in case one of our top 2 guys gets injured. Looking at Free Agency for WR- anyone that is good is a RFA and with these top 4 rules we will be limited in who we can try to sign. Stallworth was cut, so we can sign him and due to his legal issue, not playing last year, and the last season he did play was for the pathetic Browns- put up horrible #’s you would think we can get him at a fair price. I also don’t see us doing any big blockbuster moves this offseason, like we did in the past signing, Bart Scott, Pace, Faneca, Jenkins- see us doing more smaller things like possibly signing Donte, veteran QB, pass rusher in Adulius Thomas or Joey Porter if either is cut, and signing another CB- will keep dreaming about getting the Pats Leigh Bodden- he had 17 PD and 5 int. this year and would be great Opposite Revis.
Eh, no need to get Stallworth. We’ve already got a speedster on our roster in Clowney. Stallworth has been mediocre wherever he goes and has a ton of baggage to boot. Pass.
Brad…$3.5 million? He was just suspended for an entire season, ask Pacman Jones what that does to your next contract.
There is zero reason I would ever want Stallworth on this team.
Brendan- I was saying the highest i would go is 3.5 mil preferably hoping to get him for like 1.5-2.5mil/yr. Stallworth and Pacman are different issues- Pacman is known to be a nut case, with multiple issues. I believe this was the first serious incident for Stallworth- Drinking and Driving- a very common offense, unfortunately the worse thing happened- he accidentally killed someone because he was drunk and driving. So if dont want stallworth, who do u want the Jets to get at WR or are u happy with Clowney, Smith and Wright.- If Cotchery or Edwards goes down, our offense will be limited.
I love Chris Berman. It was really a shame when they cut out NFL Prime Time, that was by far the best NFL highlights show on the air. I can’t think of one currently going that’s better.
Now ESPN makes you sit through all the hockey, basketball, college, racing, and golf highlights just to get some decent football highlights.
As for NFLN, they have way too many interviews and press conferences. I don’t mind a good press conference or two, but I don’t need to hear every coach, player, and water boy comment after every game highlight.
NBC’s highlight show is awful. It’s like one big panel of smugness (with the exception of Dungy).
I also feel Stallworth is more versatile, has potential to play the slot at times- and stallworth is established. We keep hoping to see clowney emerge besides being great in preseason, but still hasnt done anything.
Brad,
You make it seem as though drunk driving is not a character issue. In today’s America, every four year old knows that you shouldn’t do that, and for him to be doing it recklessly and speeding and then to kill someone makes me question his character. I’m sorry, I don’t think that’s unfair for me to judge someone off of that. He’s a multi-millionaire he has enough to call for a cab.
And you also make it seem as though he’s the best receiving option available. He’s average, at best, and hasn’t been in the game for an entire year. Would I rather have what we are currently using? Absolutely. Continuity and a lack of distractions for the same output (I am assuming this, since Stallworth has been in steady decline since his almost-1,000 yard season 5 or 6 years ago). You just said “has potential to play the slot at times”. This, to me, implies you think Stallworth should be lining up on the outside, um….and replace who? Cotch and Braylon are our #1 and #1A receivers, they’re not getting unseated by freakin’ Donte Stallworth. If they did sign him it would be to play slot, which isn’t his best position.
Again, keep him off this team.
GP
How can you not like Chris Berman? He is very entertaining and funny.
I would not mind if the Jets took a look at Stalworth I am not saying rush out and sign him but see where his head is at and what kind of shape he is in. He should be humbled after accidentally killing a man. And yes I believe he can play the slot.
The issue is we really dont go 3 WR’s too often, and usually have Keller in the slot role when we do so. I don’t see WR as a huge need for us cause i Like our top 2 guys but i think we are below average with our #3-5 WR’s. I believe he gives us depth in the WR position in case one of our top 2 wr’s go down and cant play for a few games.
Giving him a contract for a year or 2 would be wise, especially in an uncapped year where we are restricted in the players we can obtain due to the final four rules. I believe and the stats prove it that Donte is a better WR than Clowney, and also believe he is able to execute more routes than Clowney- the one trick pony as they say who can only run a deep route and the occasional deep slant.
On Donte’s #’s going down- His numbers are pretty consistent of around 700 per year, which in no way would he get with us in a limited role- his best year -2005 he had 945, he had 725 in only 12 games in 2006, 2007 he had 697- was with NE – 3rd option behind Moss and Welker, 2008 like no numbers, but playing for the dreadful Browns with inconsistent QB play.
I dont know of a better WR option than Stallworth- I’ve looked at the WR’s available, and there arent many. Most are RFA, due to this CBA issue- there arent many options- So tell me who you would like to go after instead of Stallworth, and we cant sign anyone unless someone signs one of our guys, and then we can only pay the free agent we pick up no more money than the player we lost who signed with the new team. Meaning if Brad Smith signs with the Browns for 1mil for his first year, we can’t pay our Free Agent we sign more than 1 Mil his first year, and can only increase his pay in the second year by 30%. How many good players do u think we will be able to sign like this. And all our free agents, are sub par players- meaning they wont be signing any big deals- our top two guys are jay feely and brad smith.
Brad,
I am very well versed in the “restrictions” on us obtaining players. Truth is, for the position you’re talking about, we can go out and sign a player to the role with not much difficulty.
We are only truly restricted in UFA. There will be cuts, ohhhh will there be cuts, so this conversation shouldn’t even take place now. But, for the sake of argument, who would I rather have? How about Lance Moore, who is very likely to be non-tendered with the emergence of Robert Meachem?
Also, I’m pretty sure that since Stallworth was just released he doesn’t even fall into that UFA pool. Either way, he’s not very good. He’s a speed receiver with not much else. As Scout’s, Inc. put it “[Stallworth] has bounced around the league at an alarming rate.” and “[Stallworth] has average ball and route-running skills.” There’s clearly something wrong with this guy if no team wants him for more than one season. I would much much muchhhh rather give Smith/Clowney/Rookie Receiver X (mid-to-late round pick) reps over this guy, who most likely won’t even be NFL-ready until midseason (just look at Vick, you can train all you want, but you can’t replace that experience).
Why waste money on someone with a known ceiling (and who isn’t anywhere near that ceiling presently) when you can have a cheap, young player who is willing to play specials in order to get a roster spot? That roster spot could have much more value than a “one trick pony as they say who can only run a deep route and the occasional deep slant.” Oh, you meant Clowney, not Stallworth. Funny, because they both have the same game.
i guarantee that tanny will bring in stallworth for a work out atleast…
tanny is famous for working out and exploring every single opportunity and thats what makes him a great gm….
idk if clowney will ever come along i dont think he is mature enough…i remember when cotch was always the preseason superstar and herm never gave him a shot and then boom cotch explodes…..
i just cant see clowney exploding until he matures and puts the work in….he is quick but i feel like he always disappears when he is on the field
Stallworth is too much bad karma! keep him off of our team.
remember the jets wouldnt touch matt jones with a 10 foot pole last year, when their receiving corps was much less talented than it is now. they arent going to mess around with low character guys – you just cant have them in NY/NJ with all the distractions here.
no thanks to stallworth – im sure he will land somewhere for at or around the veterans minimum
My point was that stallworth was released so he doesnt apply to our final four restriction, but most players will. Meaning it will be hard to sign someone better to fit the role than stallworth. Lance moore will be part of our final four restriction, meaning the chances of us landing someone of Moores caliber is slim, because we wont be able to offer him the money he desires, nor can we go after him til someone signs one of our guys first. And as stated in the new article on here specifically on stallworth, he is a legit #3 option, which is not so easy to replace, since even the Pats havent had success finding #3 guy for their system. Also- a guy isnt a one trick pony when he averages around 45 rec and 700 yrds per year- he is much more versatile than Clowney. And your proposed idea of drafting someone- we arent drafting a WR in rd 1 or 2, our next pick is round 5- it is unlikely to find a good wr in rd 5- rd 3 or 4 yes, but not rd 5.
If they do tender Moore, maybe the Jets will explore the possibility of signing him to an offer sheet and giving up the pick.
Bent,
Is it true that because the Saints were in the “final four” with us we can sign people from their team at will? I know this is a pointless question if they tender him, but if they don’t, can we theoretically throw a decent sum at him regardless of which players leave the Jets? I know this was talked about before, I’m just not sure if this was proven to be true or a myth.
It was widely reported that was the case, but Jason said he wasn’t sure this had been interpreted correctly by the way it was worded and when he ran it past a lawyer friend of his, that guy wasn’t sure either!
Obviously, Tannenbaum will make sure he knows the rule, so if Moore is not tendered and the Jets can sign him without restriction, he’ll probably be squarely on their radar.
I’d be surprised if they didn’t tender him, despite Meachem’s emergence.
Brad,
You really think this guy is that good? Then why did three teams get rid of him after one season? It is not hard to get 45 receptions or 700 yards in a season. We can find a guy like Earl Bennett? Pierre Garcon? Davone Bess? Those guys weren’t high picks either, and each did better than 700 yards.
I just think you’re looking at the past and expecting that as the future, when the truth is Stallworth is a deep threat (we have one a better one in Braylon) who doesn’t do much else. Clowney may not run the entire route tree, but he’s also a very good blocker, I have actually seen Stallworth “block” in person, it’s not pretty.
I’m open-minded about Stallworth, but look at the numbers for Matt Jones in 2008: 65-761-2TD (in just 12 games). Here’s a guy that was capable of being productive, but no team would touch him. I know drugs issues and DUI-related killings are two different matters, but it still gives some indication that teams are likely to shy away from players with off-field issues (real or perceived). If a team as talent-bereft as the Browns feel they can do better without him, what does that say about the rest of the league? (Of course, there is a significant financial/commercial aspect to this story, but still…)
Still, Vick got signed, so anything’s possible (although his failure to make an impact might make teams think twice about this sort of situation).
Does he deserve a second chance? Maybe, but it wouldn’t be surprising if not many teams were interested.
I think Vick deserves a second chance more so then Stallworth but i would rather have lance moore or jordan shipley in the 2nd round
Good for you Chad!!! Marshall Marshall Marshall!!!!
