Hey, maybe Ryan can be like Herm and draft an awesome wide receiver, praise him effusively during training camp, and then nail him to the bench in favor of bums like McStonehands. One thing we can always be grateful to Mangini for was actually playing Jerricho Cotchery and making McStonehands run penalty laps.
I’m hoping Leon can become somewhat of a pass target. I feel like braylon, cotchery and keller is enough for a pass game, especially with Greene and Leon in the backfield. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to add another receiver, but I think the top priority is replacing fixing the secondary and adding a pass rusher. I think if we can patch up the tiny holes in our D and take it to the next level, our offense as it is is plenty to win us games. I’d love to sign Marshall and let Braylon walk, but it looks like he’s staying put, so I think we got enough targets for the conquistador.
In such situations, it means that there is bonus money which is being spread over the remainder of the contract for cap purposes.
However, with Sanchez there is conflicting information flying around. Initially it was reported (and still is in some places) that he was due to receive a 3m salary and a 10m option bonus in year two, but now Jason (whose numbers I’m inclined to trust) is reporting he has no bonus, but the salary has escalated on the basis of his performance this year to about 7m. This is all guaranteed and the cap number would be 7m too.
Im looking at other teams. How many core players have they drafted the last 4 years?
The Patriots only have Mayo & Merriweather that stick out.
Giants have Phillips & their WR’s.
I may be missing a few others.
But we have 2 OL, QB, RB, CB, MLB. Not only that, we used our other draft picks to get an elite WR (Edwards), a solid CB (Sheppard) & a HOF QB (Favre).
I’m excluding solid players like Keller & B. Smith
And our highest draft pick of all (excluding the trading up for Sanchez) was a big bust in Gholston.
Look at the video on youtube ‘jets draft blunders’ Have we ever turned it around from there.
Dirty6 you just dont get it we need to add weapons stockpile those big phyiscal targets for Sanchez not let them walk .Pay attention to those very good offensive teams. Forget the days of those dwarf midget receivers ; Wake up.
I wanted to make the same point! I heard him say “Move Cotchery to the inside,” and all I could think was, Wow! He still hates him!
For whatever reason, Herm has never believed in Cotchery as a starter, and even as an analyst nearly seven years after drafting him, he’s still against the dude. I think Cotchery is a perfect No. 2.
The Jets need to either a) find a slot receiver who can run strong routes with speed, or b) hope Clowney develops into that.
I thought Revis’ deal allowed him to opt out of the last two years because he met all the performance incentives. The Jets, in that contract, could buy back the last two years at pretty high fixed salaries. This is one of the reasons it makes sense to renegotiate now.
Here are five reasons why the Jets should look at Stallworth.
The difference being that Mangini never got a chance with him but Rex should!!
You may not belirve it but everything I read about him AFTER the ACCIDENT points to a changed man.
If you think Braylon is dangerous now, he will be doubly so with Donte.
Plus I’m sure he will be willing to renegotiate and will cost us ZORE picks.
Andrew – yes, but he’s only due to get 5m in 2011 and (assuming he meets all incentives) 15m in 2012. Since his next contract will likely be 15m per year anyway, all extending him now achieves is to bring forward how soon they have to pay him that much, while at the same time limiting the date that they can lock him up until.
Revis is getting a nine figure deal. It might be better to do this under the next CBA rather than this one.
It makes more sense to me to extend him after 2010 with more money in 2011 and perhaps reducing that 2012 cap number.
It’s true that you can use the uncapped year (to an extent) to cost effectively extend guys, but it makes more sense to do this with the guys whose contracts expire sooner first. Ultimately, even though there’s no cap and money they pay out will lead to future savings, there must still be a limit to what they can spend.
Herm is a nice guy but he is no personnel guy, that’s why he’s no longer a head coach, Jets need CB, DT or a pass rusher in 1st, for 2nd round go for an offensive playmaker!
There’s the advantage, though of the uncapped year which they can use to sneak a lot of salary up front that won’t have to be pro-rated. For a position like corner, which pays big numbers, they’ll be able to sign him to maybe 40m first year, half that second year (because of the 50% rule). That’ll let them knock say 60m off a contract he’d get anyway as the top corner in the league, and with a really manageable cap hit going forward. Of course, they can only do this for a special case like Revis because of the uncertainty of 2011 and beyond. As for the $60m, he’s gonna get a huge amount guaranteed anyway, so why not give it to him up front to lessen the cap impact later and sign up arguably your best player, for the best part of his career, who is incredibly durable and 24-years old and plays a key position on a crucial unit to your head coach.
in an uncapped year can we resign revis jus sayin for 100 mil for like 6 years but pay him 95 of it next year so every year after that when the cap comes back he will only be gettin paid the league minimum????
I like what Herm is saying but I have to disagree with what he says regarding Edwards.I think Edwards will get better once Sanchez becomes comfortable throwing the ball.Edwards showed in the Colts game that he can me a deep threat once the Jets pass the ball and I expect to see the Jets transition next season from 65% Run Team to a 55 Run Team.Which should allow Sanchez more options and keep the defense guessing. We do need a slot receiever but hey, Welker is a number 2 and he is a slot guy…Why not Cotchery?
To me Edwards could resemble Moss as far as our deep threat and Cothchery resembling Welker.Keller is an up the middle guy who can break open like Gates would and with Leon Washington healthy could give us a Darren Sproles type threat.
The talk of us needing another receiver is overated. Our receievers are fine.Only reason their stats don’t look as good is because the Jets are a Running team.Clowney and Smith are fine along with a rookie draft pick next season. We have 4 good receiving weapons in Edwards,Cotchery,Keller, and Washington. When sanchez matures and improves, so will the recievers. Our Defense needs some minor adjustments next season in the secondary and pass rusher but the main offseason concern is bringing back the players that got us to the playoffs and the guys that were a big part of our playoff run and build from there.
Edwards is such a hard receiver to prepare for.
You know hes prone to drop the ball but hes an amazing physical athlete that he can make any play. He can take a short pass and turn it into a big play. He can go long and hes a strong blocker as well.
If you’re playing a Randy Moss type or Andre Johnson, you know you have to double or have help over the top (unless you have Revis on your team) but with Edwards you dont want to double him but you might have to double him.
I would like to see the Jets continue to build their core from the draft. In the playoffs, a great defense usually beats out a great defense more often than not..
For upcoming draft:
1. D-lineman/LB
2. Defensive Back (preferably CB)
3. Offense (Linemen, WR)
Perhaps Jets can try to shop Rhodes for picks (2010/2011)? (Raiders?)
Let Herm talk all he wants, it’s funny. NOT the same old Jets. I think the Jets are close but not for next year.
Rusty – No, the money he receives in 2011 must be at least half of what he received in the uncapped year.
Andrew – That would be a huge risk IMO. What if Revis (heaven forbid) got hurt in 2011 and was never the same player again? Although it wouldn’t affect their cap as much in the future, the team would still have already footed the bill for 60m over those two years. It would also put a huge strain on their cap position for 2011, assuming the cap came back to give Revis a 20m cap number instead of a 5m cap number. Also, what’s to stop him holding out for more money in 2012 or 2013 when he’s receiving low amounts?
kiss of death. herm is a moron. every time he open’s his mouth, i smile and shake my head. and then every time the know-nothing hosts @ espn tv and radio refer to him as a “football expert” i laugh out loud.
This is a 24 year old, consensus all-pro at a crucial position that demands a very high salary, who plays for a defensive-minded coach. He never seems to get hurt, and he’s becoming a team leader. In normal times, he would have gotten $40m guaranteed on a contract that’ll probably run 6 for $85m, according to Jason. So there isn’t that much difference in what I suggested. Maybe I went a little overboard, but the principle’s a good one. Maybe, he should get $30m first year all salary and $15m the second, which is what he would’ve gotten anyway on his current contract. Then, you give him a third and fifth year, non-guaranteed roster bonus and a smallish, relative salary in the remaining four years. This way, there’s a really tolerable cap hit for future years no matter what the league does in 2011 and you’re relatively insured against injury.
That would work out well. You give him a 6 year 85 million dollar contract. You Give him 30 million in the first year, 15 million in the second year, 7 million in the third year, 8 million in the fourth year, 12 in the fifth year and 13 in the sixth year. That way he would have no reason to hold out in the middle years because his salary starts going up in the last couple of years.
You said, “Clowney and Smith are fine along with a rookie draft pick next season. We have 4 good receiving weapons in Edwards, Cotchery, Keller, and Washington.”
Based on Herm’s observation about bring Cotchery inside, my question is who do we draft?
Do you draft a Golden Tate (First Round) or Damian Williams (Second Round) to play slot?
Or,
Do you draft a Brandon LaFell (Second Round) to tandem with Brandon Edwards?
Maybe,
A versatile wideout, like Dexter McCluster who can go deep like Clowney and come out the backfield like Leon?
Seems to me Cotchery is fine at #2. He’s a sure handed possesion receiver that complements Edwards’ big, physical fast play. Love Keller’s deception floating over the middle and Leon as Sanchez’s release valve.
So, I like the idea of reuniting Damian Williams with fellow USC chum, Sanchez, as our next Wayne Chrebet.
Andrew – I agree with you about how indispensable he is. However, I am anticipating a contract of more like $100m over six years or even $115 over seven. If they can sign him up for 85/6 then, sure, do it now, but if they’re more likely to approach the numbers I suggest above, then it will be harder to make that work without stretching yourself over the next few years. Revis is more likely to be earning 20m in six years than 13m IMO.
Andrew – while in theory that makes total sense for the Jets, the problem with it is that in years 3 thru 5 the player begins to whine that he is only making chump change and should be making more because he is an All-World player (see: Baker, Coles, et all). The agents for these guys selectively forget the fact that they made all their cash upfront. You get a locker room cancer, and the public is sympathetic to the player and not the team.
Coles was complaining his first year. It didn’t just start with the stuff after his Washington years. Neither Baker nor Coles got $45 million in cash to play with either. As for Revis, to my knowledge, he hasn’t complained about his salary in his first four years. His base this year was $460,000 and he took home, all-in about $7m, despite making the Pro-Bowl last year, and being worth twice that. I don’t think yuo have that problem with this player.
bent
I got those numbers from Jason. He based them on the Asoumugha contract.
Andrew – Still seems like a bargain to me. If Asomugha gets 15m a year, then if I’m Revis’ agent, I want more than that. My projection might be a bit excessive, but if – as you say – he hasn’t complained about his salary to date, then why bring forward the date whereby you must pay him eight figures per year?
I’ll be thrilled when they do lock him up, but a six year deal now only extends the time they have him under contract by three more years. Why not wait and give him a seven year deal after the season and extend that stay by 5 years?
As I said, if he starts being a problem, then go for it, but if not, it makes sense to get this year out of the way first. I just can’t see them spending an extra $30m or so this year, when they will already (hopefully) be spending a ton of money on extending a bunch of other guys that they can’t really afford to wait on. Especially after just having shelled out so much for the new stadium. If they just extend Revis and risk losing those other key players as a result, that would be a mistake.
This is like the kiss of death. uhg…
Who can honestly take Herm Edwards opinion seriously? This is like letting Steve Phillips talk about baseball…
oh, wait…
No way.. i love Herm…
Herms right look at the Saints the Jets need another big physical target opposite an improved Edwards and move Cotchery inside.
Hey, maybe Ryan can be like Herm and draft an awesome wide receiver, praise him effusively during training camp, and then nail him to the bench in favor of bums like McStonehands. I think Cotchery was also a 4th rounder.
Does that make Rhodes, Leon & Cotch all as 4th rounders?
The best thing Mangini ever did in my opinion was drafting D’Brick & Mangold in the 1st round. We will always be greatful for that.
Yes. So was Brad Smith and Dwight Lowery.
For as bad as Mangini left here….He and Mr T did put togther some really good drafts
Alot of out core players were from 2006 – 2008 drafts
Dont fotget Ronnie that Mangini traded up for Darrelle Revis and David Harris. 2 All-Pro players and traded for THE JENKINS
Hey Bent, off subject, but do you know why Sanchez has like a 13 million dollar salary next year, but only like a 4 million dollar cap hit?

don’t care, hasn’t even been a draft yet.
I like a meat and potatoes draft this year.
Herm Cotchery is an example of why you are an analyst now. You don’t recognize talent
