Link: Serby Compares Brees to Sanchez

By Bassett on 09. Feb, 2010

Steve Serby writes one of his rallying songs in today’s Post, making some interesting comparisons between Drew Brees and Mark Sanchez.

When Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who worked with Brees in San Diego, made his predraft presentation, this is what he talked about: the comparison between Brees and Sanchez.

“He thought both had good feet, could throw the ball accurately on the move, and could throw with rhythm and anticipation,” Tannenbaum told The Post last night.

“I thought Mark had kind of his own unique style. . . . Mark may be just a little bit taller. They do have some similarities. We didn’t draft Mark just because he may have been just like Drew Brees.”

Once your knees are right, Kid, once you learn how to slide, you will be required to be more than a mere caretaker for a punishing ground game and a violent, havoc-wreaking defense. The fans will be counting on you to start winning games for the Jets on your own.

Not each and every game, the way Manning does in Indianapolis, the way Brees does in New Orleans, the way Tom Brady has done in New England. But on those occasions when Shonn Greene and company are greeted by what seems like the Chinese army, on those occasions when the great defense Ryan keeps talking about betrays him in the fourth quarter, it will be on you.

This column was a straight-up embarrassment. If I turned in tripe like this when I was on the high school newspaper, I would have been given an F. This is classic Serby BS. All that was missing from this was “The Jets should make the Super Bowl their next Mark (get it? BA HA HA HA HA!).” Constant references to “Kid,” constantly referring to “You,” very poor. Can’t wait for his column if the Jets start the year 0-1: “Jets Need New Doctor’s Rx (Get it? Its like the coach’s name!) to Get San-chise Back Near the Franchez on The Mark.”

“Mark may be just a little bit taller”

According to their combine measurements, “the kid” is 1 and 7/8 inches taller.

The Chinese army? I think Serby uses manatees to write his metaphors.

Sanchez won’t be Brees. Not saying he won’t be good, but Brees is a top QB. Plus, Sanchez doesn’t have to be. All he has to do is manage the game, take some chances to score when they are behind, but most importantly keep the ball out of the defenses hands and milk the clock. Brees puts up 30+ game, because he needs to. We don’t need Sanch taking shots down field every other play.

It seems that the elite quarterbacks, like Manning, Brees and Warner, are able to make very quick decisions and act quickly on those decisions. It remains to be seen whether Sanchez has this elite ability.

Like Brees, it’ll take a few years before he completely gets it.. but he seems like he’s progressing nicely.

Serby is by far a bigger tool then Myers. He only has two articles; the jets/individual is the best since the 69 Jets/Namath or they/he stinks and needs to be replaced because they can’t take it in ny.

Honestly, I stop reading The Post in the AM during football season because it’s so god awfull.

Brees didn’t really hit his stride until his 4th season (his 3rd as a starter). It will be interesting to see how Sanchez does next season. Brees’ 2nd season (first as a starter) was better than Sanchez’s, but his 3rd season (2nd as a starter) caused the Chargers to get Rivers. I don’t know if Sanchez will be better than Brees one day, but he has a chance to better than Brees early and have a better record as a starter (Brees is only 55-51) in his first 100 games. And, through 2006 (Brees’ 1st 8 years in the NFL), Brees’ playoff record was 1-2. Mark already has that beat, now he needs a championship season!

nobody is saying Sanchez is as good as Brees is now they are saying maybe one day Sanchez will be just as good as him.one day.

Of course, Brees was an obsessive work-a-holic who had the fact that no one believed in him his entire life. Sanchez doesn’t have that. Add to the fact that he’s been in the limelight his entire life means that Sanchez may not have the same intense motivation as Brees had. Sanchez does have a great work ethic, but the truly great QBs are obsessive-compulsives. Hopefully the Sanchize can cultivate that over the years.

Funny right before the playoffs I read an article on ESPN comparing Sanchez to Jamarcus Russell (which was a god awful article by the way)

That was that timid graham guy on espn.com comparing J Russell w/ith Mark Sanchez and proudly reminding everyone of how much he disliked Mark….he didnt mention Mark at all when the Jets were moving on in the playoffs.

Wasn’t Graham, it was one of the Football Outsiders guys. They’ve been circling the wagons and claiming that they really weren’t comparing Russell and Sanchez, merely “pointing out” that their numbers were similar. They just got hammered online. Of course no one in the media ever bothered to call them out on their BS, and they just try to hide behind their coveted numbers.

    Dirty #6,
