Over the next few days, we want to hear from you about players, coaches and front office staff and whether you approve or disapprove of their contributions to the team. Basically, do you want them to stay on in 2010?
Brian Schottenheimer’s 2009 Highlights:
- Floated his name to some other teams in the wake of Mangini’s dismissal & Rex’s hiring.
- Interviewed, lost, but stayed on for Rex Ryan’s staff.
- Got a big raise.
- Probably shouldn’t have said anything about this one.
- Saw a lot of Drew Brees in Mark Sanchez.
- Was thrilled to target Shonn Greene & Mark Sanchez.
- Had a good first month, then came under fire for his playcalling.
- Came under closer scrutiny from head coach down the stretch.
- Ended the season strong with Callahan’s help in having one the league’s best running attacks.
- Was discussed for Bills job, but decided to stay with Jets (likely in deference to his dad)
- Toasted as one of the best OCs at end of season as Sanchez came along.
71 Responses to Approval Ratings: OC Brian Schottenheimer
-
Yeah, I approved as well. He had his rough patches, but he gets an approval out of me with the way he pulled it together and had the offense playing very well towards the end of the season. I don’t know how, but I really believe his talk of finally being happy with the Jets. Let’s see what he’s got for us next season.
-
This is just absurd. This man was the most hated figure on the Jets this season and now you expect me to believe that all of you who were callign for his head suddenly approve?
-
yea i was all for dumping at the end of the season there. but the way it seemed he figured out how to use sanchez and greene in the playoffs i think he might be figureing out how to call a game so ill give him ONE more year if he shows no improvement i say throw calahan in there
-
You left off of your list that he called a brilliant game against the Colts and we went into half time leading.
His game plan versus the Bolts was not bad either.
His real weaknesses were putting Sanchez in situations where Mark had major melt downs. However, except for those games, he led the offense to sufficient points that if Rex’ D and Westhead’s Specials had performed, we would have won more games.

-
He did outstanding work in the playoffs. Once he, the HC and the QB all got on the same page things worked well. I look for Rex to allow him to open it up more as Mark gets more experience.
-
Everyone wanted Thomas Jones traded, then he has a career year, everyone was calling for Schotty’s head, now hes a great coordinator. I mean, what good are opinions if everyone just backs off of them?
Bent,
to say he had plenty of support is misleading. The majority of posters were doing everything but supporting him, and if you dont think the 90% approval rating is a bit ridiculous, then I really dont know what to say.
-
I think people’s views are subject to change. I mean, if someone is doing a terrible job, you would be right to think they should be fired. If they take your criticism to heart and improve, then its alright to change your opinion on them. Doesnt make your opinion any less valid. Hell, it probably makes it more valid as it implies that you’re actually following whats going on.
-
Views are always subject to change, but what ever happened to letting things play out instead of making quick judgments based on a small sample size. Sure people started to like Schotty toward the end of the season, but that doesnt erase the fact that they were probably too quick to jump on him earlier in the season.
-
I have to admit that I’m a bit surprised that his approval rating is that high. That being said, I do think he should stay on.
-
Ws cure all

JR,
I was one of the people calling for Schotty to leave mid-season. But it was always right after a loss with emotions still running high. I feel a lot of fans made those calls when they were emotional about a bad loss. I completely bought into the QB killing offense, and still do somewhat. But I think with Rex pressing down on him to run the ball more, Schotty has grown as a playcaller.
I’m by no means in love with him or his playcalling, and I’m sure I will still waste many a beer throwing them at the wall when he does something I can’t agree with or understand, but overall he did a pretty good job. What turned my opinion the most is the gameplans and execution in the playoffs. The offense looked crisp and I think next year he can make a big jump in terms of the play calls he can make. Give him a non-rookie QB with some continuity around him, and if Schotty reverts to his old, inconsistent self I will not approve of him.
But for an offense with a rookie QB and 1/3 of the season with a below-average receiving core, he did pretty good.

This is my biggest problem with most fans especially Jet fans. The hot and cold nature is hilarious.
If there was a Sanchez vote in September it would have been 100% approval, Then after the Buffalo game it would have been 0%. The short sighted fans are just insane. I am not a math major but can you get less than 0%?? Cause thats what B-Schott would have gotten in mid season….but now he is around 91% lol
I have had my issues with BSchott (running the ball more, being able to have a feel for the game and his play calling etc….) but I always thought he was blamed way too much for eveything.
In his 4 years here he has…….done a great job with Penny in 2006, totally sucked with the rest of the team in 2007, was hot and cold with Favre in 2008 (which I blame Favre for) and after he was on the same page as Rex did a nice job last year. I think he will be a better head coach than he is a OC (similar to S Payton) but am overall happy that he is here.
-
Lets be honest guys….Most Jets fans are insane and have zero patience?
The views of Sanchez, Braylon, Jay Feely, Rex Ryan, BSchott, Brick, even Mangini should kind of tell the story…
Gholston is the only player fans should have lost patience with…….lol
-
SNow in and a fired up TJB after a B-Schott vote. Well played Bassett …..should be a good day….lol
-
JR, It just goes to show that all that matters is winning.
-
Shotty Sucks!!
He sucked in the past, sucks now, and will suck again in the future!!With the exception of year 1, Shotty has not impressed me at all. Do you honestly believe that his play calling has gotten better? Anyone can call a run play folks, and that doesn’t make you a better coach! Most of his other play calling was either lucky or hurt this team!
Shotty has not been brilliant, and we all wanted him run out of NY for the last three years!
Rex wins some playoff games after he and Callahan lend a hand to Schottenheimer and now most of you change your minds?? All I can say is wow you’re nuts!!
-
Well, its also the nature of the poll. Its so cut and dry that it leaves out the shades of grey. Like I said, I begrudgingly approve. If it were a scale of 1-10, I’d probably say a 6 or 7. I’d suspect that most fans still have serious reservations about Schotty, but feel better about the direction he and the team are headed than they were midseason.
-
My sentiments are well known and have not changed, despite the relatively good performance in the playoffs. There is, as we all know, the elephant in the room which is the failure to make substantial changes to the game plan in the second half of the Colts’ game. Most are willing to give him a pass on that one.
Jason’s numerical analysis of Schotty’s record, done a few months ago, is still, in my view, the gold standard. It should still be up on his website, nyjetscap.com. By the numbers, he should probably go.
I can only hope that Rex “coached up” Schotty, as he did the rest of the team and we’ll see a more determined and consistent approach (which is what he has always lacked) in the future. Rex’s familiar motto, “Play like Jets,” may have had as much of an effect on Marty’s kid as on the players. Rex is the first coach to impose a personality on the team (although the personality of a certified public accountant was popular under Mangini).
Rex’s good will, is also exaggerated. We did, pretty much, get lucky to make it into the playoffs, although we played really well once we got there. Still, Herm took us to a missed field goal from the Championship game and no one is calling him a coaching genius, with the possible exception of ESPN. Rex’s endorsement of Schotty means something, but it’s not the hand of God.
-
I killed Scotty this season, but, like I’ve said plenty of times, he put it together when it matters most. I think Rex reigned him in a little. He still needs to prove that he can put together a consistent season of good play-calling. I approve, but the jury’s still out.
-
Drew pretty much summed it up with the hot and cold nature of Jets fans. I mean really, who remembers all of the people who wanted us to try and trade Thomas Jones for a mid round pick?
I just find it funny that the approval rating is at 90% Where are all the Schotty bashers now?
For someone who said all season, “give him time, we have a rookie qb, blah blah blah…” I just find it very funny that so many people have changed their opinion.
What’s next, am I all of a sudden going to jump on the Danny Woodhead bandwagon and act as if I was riding all along?
-
Schottenheimer and the opinions about him kinda remind me of Bruce Coslet. He drives you crazy with his inconsistency all season and the team struggles. Then, as the season winds down, he does his best work. Just enough to save his job. Coslet’s teams would start 2-8 then win 6 straight to save his job. Schottenheimer drove me crazy all season but called a nearly perfect game against the Bengals, a good game against the Bolts and a great 1st half against the Colts. The rest of the season was maddening as usual.
-
I think the 2010 season will get Schotty a real head coaching job…..if they even play in 2011
He has all of the tools in the shed next year. A 2nd year QB that he grew with and doesnt have to “manage” the game. A full year of Braylon, Cotchery, Keller and the return of Leon with Greene and probably TJ….not to mention the OL and whatever we pick up this offseason.
I think the problem with B-Schott is he is a brillant play desinger but was always trying to fit a square peg in the ground and pound runnign game hole we have had talent wise for a few years.
He and Rex are now on the same page and with the maturation of Sanchez could and should be great next year. A great year or a bad one will be his last as a Jet OC.
-
the ONE thing I would like to see ALOT LESS of in our offense are those “trick plays”.
-
I think i was one of the few who said, “settle down on Schotty.. he’s not the one throwing the int’s”..
Once Sanchez settled down, we saw what a good offense Schotty runs.. He’s better than a lot of us realize.
-
My views on Schott are also well known. I have been a strong supporter all along and remain one.
Nice to see so many people coming around.
-
I really wish the archive section had the option to search by subject. I would love to read some of the schotty threads from earlier in the year. If anyone has a link, please share.
-
Hes average and thats all
-
Schotty had his rough moments at times during his tenure year. Not even his greatest supporters can say the guy has been infallible as OC, and I killed Schotty when I thought he deserved it.
That being said, he came up with something during our playoff run that made us click. From the running game, the bootlegs, the short stuff to J-Co, heck, even the passes Braylon dropped in the end zone were dialed up by Schotty (Schotty cant catch the ball from Braylon). Most of all, he got the kid to play like a pro QB, minimizing his chance for failure and maximizing his chance for success. He made a fan and believer out of me that he can lead the offense in big games.
Is he perfect or the best in the NFL? No. But I think he is pretty talented and I am more than happy to go forward with him as our OC trying to make a Super Bowl run
-
I didn’t vote because I’m on the fence with Schotty. Are the Jets better with him or without him? He’s been here for a few years and the offense has been respectable. Continuity is good for any organization (IMO) and it’s likely good for Sanchez’ development. However, I’m feeling that despite Schotty’s football knowledge/ability as a coach, he lacks that instinct and feel for a football game. In other words, his play calling doesn’t seem to match what’s called for in a game. Overall, I like him, but I have my doubts.
-
I think he had an average season. He did a far better job in the postseason. Had their been no postseason I think it would be a definite bad year. With the postseason I think it ended up being an ok job. He did finally seem to find a QB that could throw the ball down the field to match his system makeup, though the turnovers continued to plague the offense. From a scoring standpoint this went from being his 2nd worst season to second best, though I dont know how much credit goes to Schotty and how much goes to Rex for forcing a philosophy change. If the Jets found a better option Id be all for them taking it. My guess is if the high turnovers continue he wont be back again.
-
Another reason I approved is once he started implementing the bootlegs, slants to JCo and Bray, and pounding the rock, he stuck with it until it didnt work. Getting away from what was successful was my pet peeve with him, and he pretty much eliminated that during the most important games of the season.
There were times he DESERVED to be CRITICIZE on this blog, and even when I did, I always thought he should get at least this coming season to make it right, regardless of whether we made the playoffs or not. He rectified the situation, got on the same page with Rex, and matured a little bit as a playcaller. The guy is only in his mid 30′s, which I didnt realize.
I have soft spots for guys on the teams I root for that come up big in postseason play
-
Everything Shamik said in his posts. It was funny, because as i was voting, I thought to my self I had to begrudgingly approve, then in the first response Shamik used the same word.
Also I’d like to point out that fans of EVERY team run hot and cold on their team and specific players and coaches. This is not unique to Jet fans.
-
Bent, as Shamik said above, the poll is very cut and dry, no grey area. Again, begrudgingly approve. This is the reason for the 90% approval.
-
Bent – off topic but with your last post in mind, I’m curious what is an average day for TJB in terms of visitors during the season as opposed to offseason when us diehards (geeks? freaks?) reign. If you can’t give real #s, can you just give a percentage comparison?
thanks
-
i am in the middle – i disapprove of his regular season but he obviously picked it up in the post season. if the colts hadnt pulled peyton in the 3rd quarter in week 16, i think the results of the poll would have been a LOT different. there is no question schotty gained goodwill in week 17 and the playoffs – i think the 90% approval rating is a little ridiculous
the bottom line for me is that with the #1 rush and #1 defense, we should have done better than 9-7 (and remember 2 of the 9 wins were against teams that had little/nothing to play for). But – i think another year of continuity for sanchez and the offense will help a lot. So I am willing to give schotty another year
-
The other thing about Schott is that he’s still learning. He tried to fit some square pegs in round holes (and got torched for it here on game day threads — first play against Jacksonville, anyone?), but then came around a bit and embraced the pegs that he had. Unlike, say Paul Hackett, who never deviated from his “philosophy”.
-
It wasn’t so cut and dry for me, either. Especially with the post season we had. But I factored in my feelings after the Favre debacle (thought both OC and DC should be canned, but was okay with keeping Mangini one more year), and the idea that Callahan played such a huge role in the improved offense, so I voted “NO”.
And I wasn’t even one of Schotty’s biggest bashers on this site.
I was shocked to see the “love” for this guy!
-
I was down on Schotty because it appeared to me that his offense was too difficult for Sanchez…too many passes to the WRs, no passes to the RBs, not enough reliance on the running game, etc. But, his game plan was great after Atlanta through the end of the playoffs. One factor was Sanchez’s maturation, but some was a little luck, like Greene transforming the running game and Smith becoming the best Wildcat player not named Ronnie Brown. So, it was likely unfair to slam Schotty and it may be unfair to give him all the credit. As they say, winning is a great deodorant and it’s hard to disapprove of the whole body of work. I give him a solid B- and an approve. Now that he knows what he can get out of Sanchez, Smith, Keller and Greene, I expect a more dynamic offense next season. But, like with this season, there will be curves thrown the Jets way, but it seems like Schotty may be better able to cope now.
-
I voted ‘Yes’, im not in love with shotty but im starting to believe alot of our early troubles were due to sanchez’s stubborness.
That being said i think Sanchez has matured, and so has this offense. Ditching shotty would ruin Sanchez’s maturity within the offense.. Let Shotty develop Sanchez then we can let him go.
I’m exited to see Sanchez next year as his confidence grows in this offense. I want to see him take more control of this offense and i believe he will.
-
Bent – thanks. So from busiest days @1000 comments it drops down to 300 or so during the normal (boring) offseason days. You guys are still doing great, in my book.
-
I almost voted yes which surprised the hell outta me. Three months ago I couldn’t stand the thought of Schotty comin back next season. He did indeed look better at the end of the season and the playoffs but was that Schotty or Rex enforcing his own game plan? Also- in the Colts game we didn’t go for the throat and were way too conservative in the second half (IMHO). Hindsight is 20-20 I know but I’ve seen enough
-
Eddie D-
As one of Schott’s biggest supporters I would heartily agree, he is not perfect. Nor, horror of horrors, is Rex or anyone else. But on balance he has done a solid job with what he has had to work with.
He has been asked to do his job in a climate of constant turmoil over the last 4 years with a musical chairs act at the most crucial position, QB. We have gone from Penny to Clemens to Penny to Favre to Sanchez in that span and each of those QB’s brought different strengths and weaknesses to the position and demanded a different type of offensive plan. We have also had two HCs with wildly different game plans. That’s not an excuse it’s just a fact. There has been zero continuity from season to season and often within a season. Just this year with a rookie QB the Jets got rid of one of their most productive receivers a few games into the season and brought in Edwards who is no doubt a big talent but had no time to build any rapport with Sanchez in the offseason right when Cotch went down for most if not all of 4 games. Then Leon went down, a guy who was in on about 25% of the offense.
I never cease to be amazed that so many people give Schott so little credit for what he did with Sanchez and the offense this year. Yeah, there were some rough stretches (is there a rookie QB with 1 year of college ball who hasn’t had some rough stretches? Has there ever been rookie QB with one year of college ball that became the number 1 QB for any franchise?) but the offense really came together by the end of the year even without Leon and only two legitimate WRs. And no, Callahan doesn’t get all the credit for the running game and Schott just gets the blame for the passing game. Schott is the O coordinator and he is responsible for the entire offensive package, good and bad.
The bottom line is that Schott took a rookie QB this season and a offense that was both missing one of it’s key weapons and with the receiver position in transition and led them to within 30 minutes of the Super Bowl by beating two division champions on the road. Next year, with Leon back, an offseason to work with his receiving corp that hopefully finally includes a real replacement for Stuckey in the slot and not a repurposed tailback and 1 whole season of continuity in the same offense this will be a much more productive offense.
But I predict you still won’t like every call Schott makes and neither will I.
-
I approve, if we were grading I’d give him a B. I think he did a much better job than in 2008. In 2008 we had a strong running game we didn’t use enough. In 2009 we finally realized that the running game is the offense’s strength and called plays accordingly. No more empty backfield on 3rd and 2, instead we’re using our runnning game and running the ball or passing out fof run formations.
Schotty improved this season, especially after the NE loss, in utilizing the team’s personnel. Without a reliable 3rd or 4th WR he didn’t run a lot of multi WR sets. He played to the strengths of the team. A lot of that probably came from Rex.
I wanted Schotty gone after 2008, but he’s adapted to the team he had, and I’m now fine with him as the OC.
-
I agree with Bent about the traffic. Over on the big message boards you go from hyper activity to just a few threads a day during this time of the year. Likely you get a ton of activity right around draft day and then back in the dumps until late July.
-
AKA Jack
There was a time this offense from Sanchez to Schotty stunk up the place. It was all over the radio and papers in New York that Schotty was not developing the kid right.
It was never all his fault at all, I just wanted him to help the kid along a little better. If he couldnt do it, I wanted someone who could, because if its between Sanchez and Schotty going, Im sorry but its on Schotty.
However, Schotty passed the test with flying colors and was tremendous in turning the kid around, from the gameplan to the play calling, I could go on and on.
My comment was not directed at you in anyway and I just stated why I was pissed at at times this season, because if you read above, apparently you cant voice concerns and when the guy does a great job later on, you cant commend him for it and give him a pat on the back
I am confused by your comment but I agree with everything you wrote, I approved of Schotty and in no way want to argue with you
-
AKA Jack
Just to clarify a little more
I think Schotty’s offense is a good one that can DEFINITELY be good enough to win a Lombardi trophy. And you are right that he had a great guy with a huge heart but a dead arm in Penny 06, and all and out disaster in Kellen Clemens 07 (no good RBs does not help the guy either), and a prima-donna who would not play within the team and offense who thought he knew it all in Brett Favre. There was nothing he could do with Favre, Favre stabbed Schotty right in the back.
My only problem was I thought he should have pulled the reigns in sooner with Sanchez, but regardless of when he did it or how we got in the playoffs, Schotty did a great job with him when it counted most, and proved he could do it through multiple games. Even in the Indy loss, I though Schotty did a good job and stuck with what got us there, the Colts just had our number that day.
I think Schotty and Sanchez are in for some big things together in the not so far away future
-
Eddie D-
Nor was I trying to argue with you. I was just trying to give a little context to any review of Schott’s performance and I find you to be extremely reasonable in your assessment of Schott.
If you look at any of the more successful offensive teams, aside from talent they have one thing in common, consistency. The Colts have had the same QB and OC for over a decade. In his first year, Manning threw even more picks than Sanchez and watched the playoffs from the same place you and I did, a couch. Now they are a scary, well oiled machine. The Saints with Brees and Payton, the Pats with Brady and Belichick, all different offenses but all have been running their same systems for years. Even the Charger with Norv Turner and Marmalade have had 3 years of same ole same ole.
Next year will be the first year in Schott’s tenure that we will be going into the season without a QB controversy, a QB tryout in training camp and the same offense 2 consecutive years. This more than any reason is why I support Schott and want him back and think much of the criticism leveled at him has been misguided.
Schott has demonstrated that he has the knowledge to run a successful offense. If he is given the chance to run it consistently for a couple seasons I believe we will get big results. If we don’t I will be as loud as anyone calling for his head.
-
AKA Jack
Ok, cool man, just wanted you to know that I that I am on board.
I know what you mean, there are some people on this blog that wont even give the guy his due for his great job in this year playoffs with not only the offense but Sanchez (name starts with an H ends with an S), which I find laughable. And familiarity with an OC and his QB his huge also.
I dont think we will have to worry about Schotty anymore. We have an identity and style on O that can hang with anyone in the NFL. The only question is whether we keep it close or just pound people for 30 points a game
-
Yeah, sorry, no. I don’t approve at all. When you have the best run game and your offense is still in the bottom half of the league, especially with a line that gives you more time throwing the ball as well and two quality wr’s…yeah, I don’t support Schotty at all. Way too predictable, never knows what to run, when the offense is doing well, takes em out of it with those stupid reversed, when they’re not, still keeps with whatever he’s doing. I want Callahan to run this offense instead of this bum.
-
As many have said the black and white nature of this rating accounts for the relatively high numbers.
Personally, I’m on board for another year, and would give an 80% approval number if it were set as a gradient. I’m happy that most of the fans seem to be in agreement, even if not by the same degree.
Ultimately, Rex and Mike seem to love this guy and that’s all that matters.
-
lmao jesusrevis i totally agree. Jets fans are “prisoners of the moment”. We’ll see how they feely about shotty next week imean next year lol . Btw i disaprove he is most the reason
-
sanchez threw 100 ints
-
ps the only reason we are probably in the playoffs is because the colts “let us in” . So if that woudnt have happend would u still approve of him then. hmmmm …..bet u guys didnt think of that.
-
AKA Drew Said: Most Jets fans are insane and have zero patience?
Actually my insanity is proven by my patience.
-
Lets give the man one more year. Sanchez pulled it together and he called a good playoff run. First half of the Coltsgame is what im looking for from him all game all season.
-
wow he has three good playoff games (basically callihans running game) and the last two years including the regular season of this year he sucked …. everybody has forgotten…… i hope he learned down the stretch as well
-
I think that really when you think about it taking in the whole season…….SCHOTTY SUCKS LIKE NOTHING HAS EVER SUCKED BEFORE!!!!!!!!
Come the F@#$ on, he put Sanchez in crazy passing situations, if not for Rex we would be under .500 and looking at a Top 10 pick. CALLAHAN made our offense go, and that is according to SI.
Don’t get me wrong, I was VERY pleased with our season ,but my green glasses still do not hide the BS that Schotty puts out in regard to playcalling. Also, did anyone believe him when he turned down the interview with Buffalo due loving it here? He didn’t want to be embarassed and we are the best paying gig he will ever get. So why leave the golden goose?
I have to admit when I hit the disapprove button, I expected 60% to like him just based on us making the AFC championship, but 87%? How many times did Schotty vote on here?
Go Jets!!!!
Schotty just go. -
Gotta love those who demand what they can’t possibly affect.
-
Hey Jesus:
You are sooo right. Your post of 9:25 AM above is a tue deffinition of a fair weather fan, AKA “wagoneer” .
-
And to add:
Imagine that, OVER 86% of the fans now want to be his best friend.
-
Sanchez needs consistency not a new OC Schottys a smart OC Schotty himself needs the same QB FOR MORE THAN A YEAR
-
Hank should talk about bandwagon’s,
he’s on the “I dont drink the KoolAid so I can piss and moan about everything from how Rex makes it hard for out-of-state Jets fans to his criticism of Sanchez’ sideline cuisine”
-
And Hank
To say someone did a good job is not saying “Your the best, I want to be your best friend”
Approval ratings are what you think of the job a person is doing at the PRESENT time
-
Schotty gets my approval for the season as a whole, but I did bash him quite a bit for getting out of hand and letting Sanchez blow games. That was fixed the last half of the season so he gets the thumbs up.
Also his trick plays were actually working now that he’s found something in Brad Smith. I was going nuts when he finally threw it vs the Colts to a wide open J-Co.
You have to manage teams according to personnel and Schotty has had 4 QB’s start for him within the last 3 years……now with some continuity and alot of missing pieces here lets see what he can do with this offseason heading into next season

Begrudgingly approve.
