Audible: The 2010 Fullback

by Bassett on February 12th, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Every offseason, around this time, we start to drill down on the position groupings for the Jets as we start to think about free agency and the draft. So, in the spirit of our “Audibles” we wanted to hear your thoughts on each unit and what the Jets should consider addressing or leaving alone this offseason. Where do the Jets need to target during free agency, how will the Final Eight rules hamper this for the Jets? Where do they need to trim the fat? Are there any guys down the roster that you think could make an impact?

Next, the Fullbacks

The Jets have an excellent fullback in Tony Richardson, but he’s a free agent again, and is 38 years old.  Does he have another season in him?  I’d say let the man play if he wants to keep playing .. I haven’t seen anything that’s made me reticent to keep him on the team, have you?

Behind T-Rich is Jason Davis, who was a practice squadder for the team this year.  Do you think he’s able to step into some larger shoes should he need to?

Does the final 8 effect you trying to sign your own players?

  2. avatar 96debacle says:

    NO
    YOU CAN SIGN AWAY

  3. avatar Bent says:

Yes, to back up 96, there is no restriction on re-signing your own UFAs.

  4. Sign T-Rich and find a good FB for him to groom. One who can catch and run would be nice.

  5. avatar Jeff says:

T-Rich is one of the best fullbacks of the past decade. Simply outstanding blocking. Every rusher behind him has made it to at least 1000yds and 10+ tds for awhile.

    He is irreplaceable it seems

  6. avatar Vince says:

T-Rich doesn’t get enough credit. He’s absolutely critical to a our rushing attack. The players are always talking about him and his locker room leadership, but he doesn’t get the respect from Media and most Jets fans. In so many of TJ TD runs you will see T-Rich putting on a blocking clinic against the opposing team’s linebacker.

I hope they drop TJ, Keep T-Rich and let him open up gaping holes for Greene and Washington.

sign the guy for a 10 year deal if that’s what he wants

  8. avatar AKA Jack says:

He is still a great FB and a key to the success of the run game. Sign him.

  9. avatar nyckage says:

I hope he stays another year, and thus help the Jets avoid adding another position of need.

  10. avatar C Low says:

    RE-SIGN T RICH!!!!
Every big running play he had a BIG role in. T Jones doesn’t get that 4th and 1 in SD without TR’s block. Plus he is a Pros Pros and the quiet leader of the offense…..Just ask Rex. At his age he still produces….on and off the field

  11. avatar levi says:

ya we keep the immortal one another year he looked great this year. Plus he can teach Greene how to block. Nobody does it better.

  12. avatar Michael M. says:

    T-Rich for President!

  13. avatar Ben Nevis says:

I’d certainly keep T Rich another year if he feels he’s up to it.

Would love to see him start mentoring a young, talented. hard-hitting FB of the future.

  14. avatar JetSetRadio says:

The guy from usc is awesome dont know if hes much of a blocker but he is a playmaker at the position

  15. avatar head_coach says:

If he was to get hurt or retire we are in trouble. Full back, punter and pass/blocking tight end are spots we are not addressing

  16. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

I can’t remember what video it was, but T-Rich IS the team leader in the locker room, he is the player that does the pre game pep talk. He also relays alot of things to ‘Chez in the huddle.

He is of the best FBs ever IMO, he’s never gotten the publicity as Neal did, but he’s his equal…

    UFC:
    T-Rich vs. Hershell Walker

  18. avatar 96debacle says:

T-Rich should retire as a JET. yes you should replace aging players. unless they play like T-Rich. you dont put an old horse out to pasture thats still winning races.
grooming a FB is a good idea, if a roster spot is an issue work him out on special teams and see if he can do both. then its worth it. otherwise just keep T-Rich and consider the position covered and move on till he retires.
YOU JUST DONT LET THAT GUY GO UNLESS ITS TO THE ANNOUNCERS BOOTH!

  19. avatar Kenneth Mabry says:

Under the Radar prospect to watch for is Tommy Fraser form Coastal Carolina. His agent has contacts with the New York Jets. The kid is a beast. His from a small school. The kid was a 1st team all american in FBS. The kid is 5’10 240 lbs and runs beteween 4.45 and 4.5 in the forty. He’ll probably bench 225 over 30 times and can block and catch. His video is on youtube.

  20. avatar Michael says:

Tommy fraser is a black horse in this draft. He has been told by many NFL players that he will make the league. Jets all u got to do is pick him up. His tomes will be shown by the end of thursday.

  21. avatar Michael says:

his times my bad and they will be the highest for any full back
