Antonio Cromartie Scouting Report

by Bassett on March 4th, 2010 at 11:43 pm

Here’s the scouting report from last year on Antonio Cromartie from ESPN.com:

Cromartie is an excellent athlete who was hindered by a hip injury for a good portion of the 2008 season. He has the size and speed to be a shut down CB in the league and can make plays on the ball like few other players in the league.

He is very fluid through hips. He can turn and run with good burst and acceleration. He has exceptional recovery skills when healthy and he uses his long arms well to intercept or break up plays. When he gets his hands on the ball he can make big plays happen in the opposite direction due to his experience as punt returner.

He has enough size and strength to match up well with big and physical receivers, but he is also quick enough mirror routes of quick players. If he stays healthy, Cromartie has Pro Bowl ability and will be considered one of the leagues elite cover men for years to come.

At 6-2 and 203 lbs. he’s just the kind of corner the Jets have been looking for since adding Revis in 2007, a larger player who can muscle up with some big talent … but also play with a smaller guy should teams try to mismatch him. It’s not to say that Darrelle can’t play those big guys too, he did it well in 2009, but it’s more about being ready for any given receiving corps and how opponents match that second corner. Cromartie allows them to add some beef and versatility to their secondary.

Size is something that the Jets have coveted for a few years now out of their secondary, but had a tough time finding. During the 2008 Draft, the Jets were close on Tyvon Branch and Justin King, both six footers, and missed out by one pick. With no corner of interest on the board right there, they moved back a few slots and then took Dwight Lowery. It’s not to say that Lowery was a guy they didn’t like, I just think they liked other guys out there better for their needs.

Cromartie’s physical abilities are limitless, but it’s going to come down to his focus. Rex will tell him what’s expected and it’s up to Cromartie to focus and deliver.

Great trade but here are some of the negatives
    1) His contract expires at the end of the year
    2) He gave up too many long plays/TD’s
    3) Shies away from contact
    4) off the field issues

I like the move, only because it was a bargain for someone like Chromartie, and who’s to guarantee Tannenbaum wouldn’t have used this third rounder for another trade and everybody we be jumping up and down like now, we value picks way to much, and I think this a is a good deal, but I think we need a solid nickel corner, because Lowery is to slow for it, but I personally believe Lowery can be BETTER than Rhodes as a FS.

  3. avatar Jeff says:

Love the move. Hope that it works out.

    In Tannenbaum we trust.

  4. avatar head_coach says:

even if we get AT i still want a pass rusher

  5. avatar dtrain says:

if anyone doesnt love this trade… you dont watch football… guy is a FREAK who will be a #2 corner to the best DB in the NFL… we would give up a 3rd rounder for next years draft if worst comes to worst, thats not bad at all lol… u need to gamble to be great and with lowery as the nickel this secondary is amazing at full strength. also if they find thier guy as a pass rusher cro will look all that much better by picking off rushed throws.

  6. avatar tom says:

why in the report does it say Cromartie can play with the big physical receivers? we dont even need him to do that. Revis not only proved he can play the big physical receivers (Owens, Colston, Ocho, Moss, the whole chargers receiving corp, esc, esc,) but he can dominate them. this will allow Rex to do so many things

  7. avatar EastSide says:

Shied away from contact on the Greene TD during the playoffs this year but I’m sure Revis and Jim will make sure he learns to love the hit. 2011 doesn’t promise to be the kind of draft that 2010 will be so this is a great move. DE or OLB in the first seems almost certain now.

everything you stated can be fixed…

i also think fans over value draft picks…we cant have it both ways…to get the players we need or want you have to realize we have to sacrifice picks for those who you want/need on this team in order to become a great team…TANNT knows this and is why he is not shy when it comes to pulling the trigger…just my thoughts…

  9. avatar bungi says:

Great move since their hands are tied in Free Agency. This guy will be solid opposite Revis. Now they can focus on an edge rusher in the draft and a wr and depth on both lines. Great move. If I were Tanny I would trade down to pick up an extra pick since this draft is so deep.

  10. avatar Shamik says:

Not to put a damper on things, but shouldn’t we question why SD is so eager to let go of this guy? He does have his off-the-field issues, but I do hope there isnt something that’s wrong with him that we don’t know about. That being said, I hope Tanny fleeced the hell out of SD.

  11. avatar Brad says:

Off Topic- Slot WR- Antwaan Randle El- 50 rec/ yr the last 3yrs.
Antwaan Randle El was due a $4.25M salary in addition to a $6.25M roster bonus. The Redskins are also looking to upgrade at the position, which left Randle El without a role. Though his playmaking days are in the past, the 30-year-old should draw interest on the open market as a quality slot receiver.

  12. avatar Dylan says:

I really like this trade, but Jets fan should know that Cromartie gets burned ALOT. He makes a lot more plays than Lito and has much more ability, but he probably gets burned just as often. Kerry Rhodes is a crucial part of our secondary now. He needs to help prevent the deep completetions.

Revis and Cromartie should have a ton of picks next. It wouldn’t surprise me if they combined for 15. Cro and Revis play the ball as well as anyone in the league.

  13. avatar dakar says:

    i like that word…

    fleeced…funny…

  14. avatar HHH says:

    Great trade..

Now this sets up us gettin WR 1st round, and DE 2nd.. arellious Benn I Pray

  15. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

I heard the Greene play in the playoffs is one reason, but the Chargers have Cason and Jammer, and they also have Merriman and others that will be up for extensions if the CBA gets done next year. Even in a uncapped season, the Jets have a buttload of more money than the Bolts do. SD is a small market and they make decisions based on finances sometimes

AJ Smith will always go with the younger guys and is the same guy who gave up on Drew Brees too, and how did that work out for Brees?

  16. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Dylan

You are right in a sense. Cromartie gambles alot, but based on his physical ability, he is near impossible to physically beat. He gets beat in zone coverage alot more than man.

The only question is whether Cro learns to “play like a Jet” or freelances and makes mental errors

This guy plays within Rex’s system and sticks recievers while Rex brings the heat and doesnt allow QBs to hold the ball, we are talking about the best pass defense in the NFL by a large margin

  17. avatar Dylan says:

    Eddie DiGio,

Yeah, Cromartie is arguably the most physically gifted CB in the NFL. Right now he is a #2, but with the right coaching he could become a shut down CB. He is still young and has a lot of room for improvement. If he regains his 2007 form, the Jets will have the best secondary EVER. Cro and Revis can be that good.

  18. avatar dakar says:

to be honest with you…i dont care who we draft…just as long as its for need or at least best player available…

  19. avatar head_coach says:

hahahha just went around the net and seen some peoples reaction to the Cro trade and people on other teams are shocked we got him. some charger fans are trying to laugh it off but they know whats up. We got a steal .

  20. avatar dakar says:

    loolol…yes we did…

  21. avatar head_coach says:

one bronco fan said ” oh know dont they got Revis island too sheesh? ” llllllllmmmmmmaaaaaaaaooooo

  22. avatar guyute says:

Tannenbaum is again out-thinking the competition. What makes this year’s draft so strong – everyone leaving early out of fear of rookie salary limits next year – will make next year’s draft so weak. In 2011, a 3rd rounder might be equivalent to a 4th rounder in a normal year, talent-wise, and a 2nd rounder more like a 3rd rounder.

  23. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

The more and more I look at how AC fits here…this is not a good trade, ITS A SUPERB ONE

The Jets are going to send pressure all day at the QB, and Cro’ just has to run with the WR. That is his SPECIALTY.

When Cro has to look into the backfield and read the QB eyes, that is when he gets “beat”. The Chargers pass rush and aggressiveness on D dwindled and so did A.C’s play and stats

In Mangina’s Read N React this is not a team changing move, in Rex’s Organized Chaos, this makes the Jets DOMINANT in the secondary

All you haters around the NFL should bow down to the best defensive mind in the NFL right now, Mr Rex Ryan, he pushed for this trade from the jump from all that I can tell and barring injury just set up his D to be championship caliber

  24. avatar head_coach says:

wow guyute never thought of that

  25. avatar tyler says:

Wow eddie, u must mean the more and more nfl live looks at the trade?. Seeing as how they said the exact same thing 20 mins ago.

  26. avatar Dylan says:

    guyute,

Wow great thinking there! Thats right on the money. This years draft is extremely deep, and next years draft will be extremely weak.

  27. avatar Marvel says:

    guyute

I’m mad at you because I probably wouldn’t have thought about that until someone brought it up next year lol … Good call

  28. avatar matt says:

we need a pass rusher and as for the big plays he gives up he will have more help here then in sd hes the number two guy here which prob gives us the best one two punch at cb in teh league

  29. avatar sunsetmusic says:

People are acting as if we are NOT going to upgrade our pass rush…..its March 5th!!!! And Jets are well aware that its priority #1!!! So relax peoplesssss lol they will have a better pass rush and this AC trade will look better than it already does! Also next years draft is PROJECTED to be weaker so the value of a 3rd is different then a 3rd this year and I don’t mean by NFL draft scale I mean this time next year u wanna be in the top 2 and a low 3rd (assuming) Jets play well will not get u a starting caliber CB unless u have one of those magic gems that happen every year….and CRO is a 25 year old former pro bowler who managed to get 10 ints in the world toughest league…..ill take it!!!!

  30. avatar Jcjets says:

You gotta think that with the way Revis works and produces plus the fact his deal is done next year we are going to get a super motivated AC this year.

If we can get aN OLB to bring some heat the jet defense will be ridiculous to deal with for opposing offenses. And even if we stand pat it’s an upgrade with no impact for next year! Great move.

  31. avatar ron2473000 says:

Everyone seems to forget we were one game away from the SUPERBOWL and in the AFC championship game lowery and others were getting torched by Indy’s second and third receivers. Now I’m not a hater against lowery but a realist. We now have that second receiver locked up with Cro and if we were smart draft kyle wilson if he is still on the board at 29 so that 1) if Cro sucks we let him go and have a young corner in wilson that played his first year in the slot as experience remember he is only 5’10″ so that spot would fit him great; 2) we move lowery to FS as I stated a couple days ago and others echoed those same sentiments because we all know he isn’t fast enough to cover corners but he makes plays and loves to hit check out his forced fumbles stats as many as rhodes; and 3) well everyone is probably thinking what do we do about rhodes well we trade him for the pick that we lost on Cro and now we have covered every avenue with our secondary. Now tell me that doesn’t sound sick???

Like no one uses information from ESPN or the web on TJB…hence the more and more I “look”- meaning that the more and more information I gather- where else am I supposed to get it?

    Thanks for playing fun boy

Jets defense is great…I hear Mel Kiper project Taylor Mays going to the Jets…Imagine that….If we can swing a package for Brandon Marshall which is not highly unlikely, we would be unstoppable…..Don’t want to get carried away but 16-0 isn’t impossible…Adalius Thomas will be cut soon and he will join the Jets…That takes care of a big need right there until we get around to next years draft….And must we forget in the AFC Championship game we did not have BIG KRIS JENKS so there goes another addition. Jets will be favored to win the Championship in 2011…You heard it here first
