Jets Trade for Antonio Cromartie

by Bassett on March 4th, 2010 at 11:02 pm

The Jets have struck, with just under two hours to the deadline, the Jets have traded for Chargers CB Antonio Cromartie.

FoxSports.com’s Jay Glazer and ESPN’s Adam Schefter are both reporting that the Chargers have agreed to trade CB Antonio Cromartie to the Jets. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Bolts will receive a conditional 2011 third-round pick, for the damaged goods corner.

According to Schefter, the pick can be upgraded to a second-rounder depending on Cromartie’s playing time and the Jets’ performance in 2010. While Cromartie has all the physical tools (which is why he was a first rounder in the first place) Cromartie has had a string of concerns off the field (multiple paternity suits) and some questionable effort on the field, looking no further than the Jets divisional game against the Chargers.

From a value standpoint, no one’s is going to care right now about a 2011 draft pick, had they gone to the well in this draft class?  That would have been another matter.

This is another risk that the Jets are taking, like Braylon Edwards.  If the young corner, who is in a contract year can dedicate himself to Rex Ryan, it could be good things for both him and the team, but the Jets must feel pretty comfortable in their coaching and their core if they are willing to take on another player like Cromartie … talented yet damaged goods.

Right now, we’re not a big fan of Cromartie, just like we weren’t too stoked on Lito Sheppard last year, but we see it as a (forgive the phrase) necessary evil.  With a number of concerns to address via the draft, this frees them up to not worry so much about drafting a corner early, they can go with the best player or key on a position like a front seven player or a slot wideout early.  Still, I don’t see how this works out any differently than the last washed up corner the team brought in at a discount, with a lot to play for.  The Jets paid more for Cromartie than they did for Sheppard, so they might feel more confident in this rental player.

all i can say is wow

  2. avatar JesusRevis says:

This is wonderful. Cromartie is a perfect compliment to Revis, hes an athlete who can makes plays on the ball. There are some concerns, but hes pretty much as good as it gets when it comes to number 2 corners. I’m very happy with the trade.

  3. avatar dylan says:

big time player baby watch hes goin to be the real **** in this system

    jets super bowl champs 10

  4. avatar E. Weeks says:

Though I’m not crazy about the move, perhaps Rex Ryan is just the thing Cromartie needs to get his head on straight. I hope this works out …

  5. avatar Green Lantern says:

    In Tanny We Trust!!
Even Though I Wanted This Move To Happen.

  6. avatar chris says:

love it…absolute steal…so he does not pay child support to his 7 kids….he is a big physical DB who makes plays…..Rex will fix him…..Rex said his combine workout was the best he had ever seen from a CB…..I believe he can also return kicks….COuld this spell the end of Leon? In any event, love the move…

  7. avatar adornoj1 says:

Saw this on profootballtalk….what can i say, Tanny does it again! Lets give him a year to see if he can adapt to our defense before we start talking extension

  8. avatar Shamik says:

If anyone can do it, Rex can. That being said, what does his contract look like? I think this also allows the Jets to push for a pass-rusher in the draft and maybe build up some depth by getting a CB/S later in the draft. Maybe a receiver in the early rounds?

  9. avatar Organized Chaos says:

Cautiously optimistic. Squeeze the ability out of a 25 year old physical freak like this guy, and it becomes a steal.
other notes – looks like Peppers to Washington. Let’s just hope Dansby doesn’t end up in MIA

  10. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

IN REX AND MR T WE TRUST!!!!!!!

These aint your grandpa’s Jets….this regime has one focus in mind….the Super Bowl and the Lombardi Trophy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. avatar JDB says:

actually i can say more. this is a pretty solid move. It’s a bit risky, but a good risk. if he plays well, it’s a steal, if he plays poor, the risk was worth it.

  12. avatar Shamik says:

Also, keep Revis away from this guy. I wasnt Revis holed up Arizona doing the very same thing he did last year to put himself on the map. We don’t need any bad influences/distractions from Cromartie, even though Revis probably could reciprocate and make him a better player.

  13. avatar Jake says:

Tanny never ceases to amaze me.. I love this trade.. and I think Cromartie will shine under Ryan..

  14. avatar JP from LA says:

I don’t see anything at all wrong with this deal. I love it. If he makes the pro-bowl it’s a 2nd rounder. Fantastic. If he flops he’s a third rounder. That’s fine too, because it’s really unlikely that he’ll do worse than a third rounder anyway. Variables? Injuries. Still a third round. Other variable. Has an OK season. Can’t be worse than Lito. That fool got eaten alive. And they have some solid CBs to fill the gaps.

He can’t tackle a big back running up the gut. But he can cover a man. And he shouldn’t be roaming in Bart Scott land anyway.

  15. avatar Bryan says:

Great teams build through the draft and are built on depth and development of young talent. In a few years we might have some “big” (or formerly big) names but be wondering why there are so many holes in our team.

  16. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

i hope this works out.. i have mixed feelings right now..

  17. avatar vbsiena24 says:

    From Eric Stangel’s twitter:

“Jets trade for Antonio Cromartie. Shonn Greene just phoned to congratulate him, but he missed the call… “

  18. avatar Shamik says:

If he can live up to his rep and hype, whooof, Monster Secondary. My only question – can he cover Welker?

  19. avatar James says:

Tanny will never cease to surprise me.

  20. avatar Dylan says:

Great move by the Jets! I wouldn’t have done it for a 2nd this year, but getting him for a 3rd next year is a robbery. The Jets are built to win now, so trusting a rookie CB to start and play well would have been too risky. Cromartie is a terrible tackler, but he plays the ball as well as anyone. He gets beat deep a little too much, so a great coverage safety (Rhodes) is an absolute necessity. Cromarite is also 6’2, so they can put him on big, physical receivers. If we get the Cromartie from 2009 this was a decent trade. If we get anything close to the Cromartie of 2007, this was an unbelievable trade.

  21. avatar sec133 says:

I think this was a very good move. With Revis and now cromartie, Rex will be able to get very creative on defense.

well done Tanny. keep up the good work

  22. avatar Shamik says:

Bryan, what’re you talking about? What holes? We traded a single pick mid-round pick for arguably an equivalent player. Maybe if we traded a player and two picks, but not the way this went down.

  23. avatar Brendan says:

Well, Bent…I called it, haha. This is a good trade and could turn out to be a great one. Revis is going to shut down the #1 receivers, and Rex is sure to design some plays that will maximize Cromartie’s playmaking ability.

The fact that he could go to the Pro Bowl and the Jets could win a Superbowl and it still wouldn’t cost us a 1st rounder is great. I like the trade.

  24. avatar nyjetsman says:

    so…

  25. avatar Brendan says:

Bryan, Cromartie is only 25 years old…

  26. avatar Electric Ham says:

I think it is unfair to compare lito to cromartie…. Cromartie is 25 and flashed more ability then him… still i understand the concern especially when i remember that Shonn Greene TD

  27. avatar Jay says:

Live thos trade. Now we need a LB and/or DE. I have faith in Tann and he is building this team to bechampions!!!!! Go JETS!!!!!!!

  28. avatar jkjet64 says:

I like this because it frees up the Jets in this Draft. Trade back for extra picks, pick up a Pass Rusher, Receiver, even a top OL. Gives them options and i like that

  29. avatar James says:

    Bryan,

How many holes does this team have? If we really wanted, we could go BPA in the draft.

  30. avatar jleonhard says:

guarantee this is not the only move that tanny makes

  31. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Bryan
“Great teams build through the draft and are built on depth and development of young talent. In a few years we might have some “big” (or formerly big) names but be wondering why there are so many holes in our team.”

What about Revis, Mangold, Brick, DH, Sanchez, Leon, Shonn Greene, Kerry Rhodes, Shaun Ellis, Brandon Moore, Brad Smith etc

This team built through the draft FOR YEARS!!!!!! That is complete BS! This team is built to win NOW!!!!! And it would be one thing if they gave up a 1st and 3rd for the guy, but it is a 3rd rd pick!!!! You have any idea how hard it is to find viable man corners in the NFL? Cromartie was gone out of SD after this year and AJ Smith figured he would get something for him, the dude can flat out cover when his head is on straight…chill out debbie downer

  32. avatar ronnie says:

Biggest thing for Cromartie: He wont have to cover #1 guys anymore like he always had to.

  33. avatar Shamik says:

Frankly with this addition, the Jets are in a damn good position. Really, the team they currently have is good enough to get to the postseason. In the draft they just have to add depth and upgrade. Exactly the position you want to be in!

  34. avatar Steve in Philly says:

Sign Delhomme as a backup? Maybe?

  35. avatar MIKE says:

NICE MOVE FOR THE JETS.. WE CAN CROSS OUT CB.. now we need a LB

  36. avatar Brad R. says:

I have my doubts about his play and commitment over the last two years, and I am definitely sick of trading draft picks. But he is young and he is an athlete. Maybe the change of scenery is what he needs? Maybe playing across from Revis will help him dedicate himself to this defense?

I hope he sticks b/c we can’t keep trading picks in exchange for year long leases on cornerbacks. Not a viable long term strategy.

  37. avatar jkjet64 says:

God No! Please don’t sign delhomme

  38. avatar Tom says:

    Cromartie Math:

    Wonderlic score: 12

    =

    Number of kids: 7
    +
    Number of states: 5

  39. avatar jkjet64 says:

Not defending Cromartie but he isn’t the only one who missed on Shonn Greene.

  40. avatar Brabble says:

Maybe Rhodes to Arizona for Boldin

Then Boldin and Cromartie and a draft pick to Oakland

    And the jets have Nnamdi?

  41. avatar steviek says:

what exactly was the rap on him in sd? was he not playing hard, game to game or even play to play? mental mistakes? didnt take to coaching?
if a cb is playing man D, his job is fairly straightforward (but difficult). if you listen to guys like revis, outside the physical skills, watching film and studying is everything for a db.

  42. avatar Brad says:

Agree with the majority of u, this seems like a great deal for the Jets! One less need for us to address early on in the draft. Focus on Pass Rush, DL and OL depth, possible Wr, and who knows what is going to happen with Rhodes.

Amazing- Everyone thought due to Final Eight rules we might have a quiet free agency, and before it even begins we make a Big Splash!

  43. avatar M eazii says:

Great trade… Love the aggresion so far already from the Jets… Im getting pumped in march, crazy right lol i am confident this coaching staff will get cromartie back to 07-08 form… And if he does probably a secound rounder! What a sreal, u did it again mr t… U got my props

  44. avatar Lyim says:

If Cromartie makes the Pro bowl.

    If…

Does anyone else realize that if he makes the pro bowl that would mean he’d be beating out either Revis or Asomugha…? Or am I wrong in thinking it?

  45. avatar PickNY says:

The Jets don’t have any leverage in the free agency, so this is a good pickup rather than having to train a rookie! Rex will do wonders with this guy. Next year third rounder is a steal, IF he can regain what he once was. Keep rollin the dice Tanny! Nuttin 2 lose. Go JETS!

  46. avatar Ed L says:

now i can definitely see us trading back in the draft this season to pick up some depth….

    but who knows with tanny….

IN TANNY AND REX WE TRUST!!!

  47. avatar nyckage says:

WTF, tha twas the first thing that ran through my mind after reading the headlines, I honestly thought the Cromartie deal was dead, but Mr. T. can work his magic.

  48. avatar M eazii says:

If jerry hughes is there at 29 he is a jet! I feel it! Wooooo

  49. avatar Brad says:

Steviek- heard he had off the field issues- too many kids- in different states, mental mistakes, hated that they played a lot of zone, talked to much. He had 10 Interceptions in 2007- his second season, and the season when the Chargers pass rush was one of the best in the league led by Merriman. Last couple of seasons, Merriman injured and not the same last year, their pass rush as a whole, not as dominant, so chances for interceptions go down too!

Difference between Cromartie and Lito, cromartie is in his primes, lito was at the end of his career!

  50. avatar adornoj1 says:

just went from 6 to midnight

  51. avatar Chris says:

Great trade! What next? Should we go after Adalius Thomas and get our pass rusher there instead of through the draft? I say if we sign Adalius, then draft Mt. Cody so we can groom our next Kris Jenkins and then draft Jordan Shipley if he’s available.

  52. avatar GangreenTed says:

whats not to love about this trade…regardless of his off the field issues your getting a freak playin in a great secondary on a contract year…this guy will embrace this oppurtunity so he can cash in…Lito couldnt cover without holdin his reciever ..period..thier athletic ability is not comparable…now this is perfect…you make a couple signings like a jamal williams and adalius thomas…then your free to use your draft picks anyway you want…best available player..pass rusher, wideout or even running back

  53. avatar Dylan says:

Cromartie has a much higher upside than Lito and isn’t as much of a risk either. He was the number one CB in San Diego, so he was covering team #1 wideouts. He won’t have to do that here. Cromartie was one of the best CB’s in the league a few years ago.

  54. avatar Bleed Green 24 says:

i absolutely love this trade… think about it like this.. cromartie can cover a guy and thats what this team is lacking. in essence we gave up a 3rd rnd pick possible second but i would be willing to back cromartie returns to form rather than a 3rd rounder becomes a star (not that its impossible)…being i am comfortable with my sexuality, i am going on record of saying i love mike tannenbaum!

  55. avatar Lyim says:

    Chris,

If we’re not going after Adalius Thomas, then our coach’s name isn’t Rex Ryan.

  56. avatar James says:

    Ronnie,

He never had to cover #1 receivers. SD has a guy named Quentin Jammer.

  57. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Seriously I love Mike Tannenbaum- how long it take the dude before midnight to make a move?!?!

If there is a hole on this team, Mr T will fill it or die trying. So refreshing from the Herm-Bradway or Mangini Paranoia Regime. We arent looking for “high-character, smart guys” who are slow and cant make plays…

Now its “who is going to help us win a TITLE!!!!”

Hey its not even Mar 5th yet, Tanny might not even be done yet!!!!

  58. avatar Dylan says:

This trade also gives us much more freedom in the draft. We can go DL, LB, WR, OL, S, or even RB in the first round.

  59. avatar clint says:

I can’t wait to see what other things happen, hopefully a few more things.

  60. avatar broward says:

I love it…..is kyle wilson better than cromartie? I doubt it….maybe one day but not next year for sure….this is the best cb tandem in the league….so many players are getting released…final 4 means nothing to the jets….how about bringing our old buddies coles and baker back….coles in the slot with cotch and edwards…..bring in joey porter and the draft can be best available player…….a little bit of rambling but i’m hyped right now

  61. avatar Chris says:

    Totally agree Lyim

  62. avatar dakar says:

man some of you guys act as if CRO is washed up…he’s only been in the leauge for 3 years…just like revis…he isn’t injury prone…he has the tools and if any1 can get him to use those tools its REX and PETINE…not to mention its a 3rd round pick from 2011…that can escalate to a 2nd…but if he works out then it was a great deal…if he doesn’t…so what…without taking chances how will we ever become a great team year in and year out…but not for nothing…i really wanted ASO…but we all know that wasn’t gonna happen…

  63. avatar Lyim says:

I actually drool at the idea of Adalius Thomas in our defense. He knows this defense. He’d love sticking it to New England.

  64. avatar levi says:

I didnt like the thought of this move earlier but for a 2011 3rd I am all for it.

So did Cro or Jammer cover #1 recievers?

  65. avatar Lyim says:

    dakar,

I want him to go to 2nd rd pick, it would mean we have TWO pro bowl corners.

  66. avatar Lyim says:

    levi,

    Jammer I believe.

  67. avatar head_coach says:

i think with this move kerry has to go. Cant have to cupcakes in the def of back.

  68. avatar deevee says:

i think now that we got ourselves a corner you’ll see Tanny go after B Marshall.

I know he is a head case but who isnt a head case?
Plus ihe’s a head case and grabbing 101 rec I’m all for it, be a head case then.

Besides you’d be causing problems too if you played for Josh McDaniels.

  69. avatar steviek says:

well, too much talking and too much zone aren’t really issues in jetland are they?

as for 7 kids in 5 states, lets not get too hypocritical. all of a sudden no one seems to care when a guy is playing well, only when he’s not. hell, you can be a murderer in the nfl if you put up numbers. look at leonard little’s bio.

  70. avatar Harvlis says:

This is a great move. We pick up a 25 yr old CB who has had a 10 INT season. And, as mentioned above, he doesn’t have to cover the other teams best receiver. He has one year left on his contract and has something to prove. Best of all, we can stop worrying about corner and draft a defensive monster with our first pick. I am so happy that we didn’t settle for an older corner on the down-slide. If Cromartie and Revis can get it together — we could have a dynamite tandem for years to come. How great is Tanny.

  71. avatar levi says:

Just because Kerry doesnt make big hits doesnt meen he misses tackles.

  72. avatar Shamik says:

So what, he doesn’t have to cover #1′s here either. We’ve got a guy named D-Revis!

  73. avatar dakar says:

like last year…i really wanted BRANDON MARSHALL… but denver was greedy and now they’re selling him off for a 1st or maybe less…out of these 2—edwards or marshall—i would take marshall hands down…who knows maybe no1 claims edwards from us and maybe we trade for marshall and then we become an elite offense just like that…and jones comes to his senses and signs back with the team but this is all wishfull thinking…just my thoughts…

  74. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    James,

Wasnt L Coles the Jets #1 when Cromartie abused him and ran one back to the house? I think so….

And Cromartie, along with Jammer, always beat up the Colts recievers and gave Indy fits. SD was the only team that seemed to have Peyton’s number once he got over the Pats

That could be part of the thinking behind this move…

  75. avatar Shamik says:

Actually Dakar, I don’t know if I’d want Marshall. Do we really need that many guys with issues in the locker room?

  76. avatar Pdubbs says:

Forget mixed feelings…we got a 25 yr old #2 corner for basically nothing….. whats the worst that happens ? He has to be better then Lito….

  77. avatar nicko says:

    J E T S JETS JETS JETS……..there is no way this deal can be anything but a great trade….a 3rd rounder for a guy with this potential….no brainer……lets get a pass rusher……..

  78. avatar dakar says:

    imagine…

having cotch, edwards, marshall, keller, jones, greene and leon on this offense in 2010…unstopable…but then again we have shotty calling plays…not to mention he doesn;t jnow how to use talent…

  79. avatar Lyim says:

@Pdubbs unless he goes all Pacman Jones or something.

But, that being said, I do like the acquisition.

  80. avatar dakar says:

    shamik…

if it gets us a ring…i dont care…

  81. avatar BC says:

Not thrilled with trading all these draft picks but this could be a homerun if he gets back to his 2007 level of play.

  82. avatar Jeff says:

It seems that the likelyhood of drafting a corner was going to be difficult when the top-2 guys (Haden, Wilson) are shooting up the boards. So in the case that they are not there, it makes perfect sense to have this guy as insurance.

I mean Cromartie is not the brighest football player, but heck he can play football. I remember that game when he intercepted Peyton Manning 3x. This is a small risk- high reward move for Tanny. Looks and sounds great

  83. avatar GregNJ says:

And lets hear it for Mr. T. Well done! We now have 2 quality cover corners. Guess what this does for the defense and Revis?

Lets REVIS BLITZ, or vice versa… 2010-2011 we’ll see REVIS win Defensive Player of the Year because he’ll finally have his SACK.

J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS… What a start to the new football year!

  84. avatar head_coach says:

good now WAR MACHINE can run him over in practice for that cheap shot he took. Karma is a mutha….

  85. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Bassett-Cromartie damaged goods?

This move was made because Cromartie is GONE after this season in SD, because he is not a #1 corner, but better than a number 2 (ala Dunta Rob.) and will command a huge salary after the Bolts already have Cason and Jammer, 2 starting caliber CBs

The Chargers will make moves to save money…hey they gave up on Drew Brees too…how’d he turn out????

  86. avatar head_coach says:

i want jerry hughes or Graham with our pick regardless if we trade down

  87. avatar Electric Ham says:

I think what you guys dont realize is that not many defenses are run like the Jets where Revis covers #1′s strictly…. Cro and Jammer shared coverage or the #1′s

  88. avatar dakar says:

the guy is young and we already know he’s capable of having a great season…who cares…and if we give half are draft picks away year in and year out and are contenders each and ever year and who knows win a SB OR 2…I DONT CARE about draft picks…in the end its all about winning the SB…and maybe tanny has the winning formula…which do what it takes to become a great team…just my thoughts…

  89. avatar BigKatt says:

    Championship

  90. avatar JetOrange says:

Tanny got a little burned on the Sheppard deal, has the courage to take prudent risk again…he is the man

  91. avatar Jason says:

Im not saying that this is a bad or a good move, but it amazes me how little the Jets front office values draft picks. I have a feeling the Jets are a team that will be expected to go after some RFAs.

  92. avatar head_coach says:

hey Dakar dont forget about brad smith

  93. avatar tom says:

Adalius & find a way to move up in the draft maybe using Rhodes as a piece to that trade & draft Berry!! man Revis Cromartie little Jimmy and Berry!! A healthy Jenks, Harris, Scott, and Pace… wow what a defense we would have

  94. avatar Pdubbs says:

    No fly zone….

  95. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Electric Ham- Exacta-mondo

    - Most defenses the CBs have a side- like RCB or LCB

Revis is EXTREMLEY rare in that he follows the #1 everywhere-in a class only with Aso and Bailey a few years ago

If Cromartie buys into the Jets Defensive identity, this defense is going to be SICK NASTY bro…

  96. avatar dakar says:

head coach…sorry…how could i have forgotten brad smith…

  97. avatar EssentialEducator says:

Can the Jets trade their 2011 1st or 2nd round pick since it could possibly go to the Chargers as part of the conditions?

  98. avatar nyjets90 says:

cro for a 2011 3rd rounder???? how I understand that people are not sold on this guy cause the playoff game but Cro is shut down guy. him and Revis on the same squad is something special. offenses are mad as heck right now. i know first hand my boy is a “dolfan”

  99. avatar dakar says:

    jason

i guess after being ruled by a nun like mangini the org. realized this is a violent game and they need a violent thinking head coach ( rex ) and are getting some high risk high reward players on the team…

  100. avatar e star says:

um i dont know what the hell u talking about basset but im a fan of cromartie and i love this move. now rex can work on him n bring him back to is 07 form cause this man is talented

  101. avatar Justin says:

Cromartie isn’t washed up the way Lito was – Lito has been in the league for a while and lost his starting position the year prior for performance reasons – Cromartie is a great #2 considering All World Revis is #1 – he will get plenty of help over the top when necessary and is far younger then Lito when we got him… Can’t watch Lowery out there in a big spot again so this makes me feel comfy

  102. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

This move all boils down to where A.C’s head is at….

Our HC is a defensive master, his scheme is proven, and his team will follow him to the ends of the earth…

Cro’ follows…add a little pass rush help…Have fun Brady and Henne- you boxes

  103. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    dakar

    Right on my man

Mangini tried to run this team like Mr Rogers nieghborhood…in return his team had no fire and got pushed around

    Not under Rex’s watch…ever

  104. avatar bungi says:

Washed up Bassett? He is going into his fifth season.

  105. avatar WallaceWright says:

Why do people assume Jaamal Williams wants to come here to be backup when he can start elsewhere?

  106. avatar head_coach says:

imagine the blitzs we can call now

  107. avatar Harvlis says:

We just had the best defense in football and we add Cromartie, Jenkins, and a pass rusher to be named later. How sweet will it be to crush New England and Miami.

  108. avatar Ed-pro says:

What I think Mike T (I saw this on another blog) is thinking:

This year, all the underclassmen came into the draft due to the uncapped year, and possible lockout. Next year the players might slim pickings.

Second, and this is a major point.

For years we have heard how draft picks are so valuable, So teams started valuing picks so much more. Now, in a way, it is over-valued. Look at the Pats, they have had so many picks in the past couple of years, yet they are finding it hard to strike gold. Drafting well takes a lot of money scouting, paying big money (Gholston)in contracts, and risk. In addition, corners take two years to get acclimated (obviously not R-Island)…

Put all these point together, and Cro is a good deal. He is 25, has talent, I assume we have tape on him for all the years he was in the league so we can coach him, and its for a three maybe two…..

It is not a bigger risk then actually scouting a corner and taking him in the second round…(although it seems we only get one year)

  109. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Bent- you are the man

NFL Live is basically saying the same thing you did

They are saying this is a “match made in heaven” for A.C and the Jets

Jets blitz and make the QB get rid of the ball faster than just about anyone…Cromartie is a pure man corner who struggles when Merriman and the SD pass rush went down, forcing more zone coverage

Rex and the D is making QBs get rid of the rock in under 3 seconds consistently, its going to be a very tall order throwing on the Jets

  110. avatar dmazz says:

Outstanding move by the Jets brass. This gives us the flexibility in this coming draft to go after some key needs.

  111. avatar Derrick G says:

i thought we should have went after Nnamdi Asomugha

  112. avatar Will says:

    Mr. T does it again

    WOW

    Love it

  113. avatar Ben says:

EssentialEducator – it can’t be bumped up to a 1. If he exceeds certain statistical benchmarks (hypothetically 5 INTs and 40 Tack and a Pro Bowl spot) it moves to a #2 but thats it.

And If we trade our #2 from now til then, it would probably become a 1 in the next draft, 2012 (generally speaking, picks in one draft are equal to picks in the next draft one round earlier)

  114. avatar Ben Nevis says:

Adam S on NFL Live just said that Thomas Jones is one of the top five out there now, and the top RB.

  115. avatar sunsetmusic says:

Very happy, worth the gamble!!!! Now back to NFL Live….

  116. avatar Jeffdolfini says:

So do we know for sure that we only have to give up a second rounder if he makes the pro bowl? Is there any other way it turns into a second?

  117. avatar Ben Nevis says:

As for Antonio C, I think the fact that he plays man so well is a great fit for the Jets. As for his off-the-field issues, if anyone can straighten out a headcase, it’s Rex.

Simply put, if Rex makes AC buy into the system, the Jets have the best CB tandem in the NFL.

Actually just as I was typing this Adam S just said exactly the same thing on NFL Live: “the best CB tandem in the NFL.”

  118. avatar Ben Nevis says:

Mark S, Tim H, & Adam S just said on NFL Live that Thomas Jones is without question the best FA RB available.

  119. avatar Wolf says:

Can’t say I support this, but I am willing to give Cromartie the benefeit of the doubt.

    And let me say this, and take it to heart;

No other GM in football has ever worked as hard as Mike T. and hard work pays off. I would personally like to thank Mr. T for doing EVERYTHING in his power to make the Jets a contender. We are lucky to have you on board. It us safe to say nobody performs like Tannenbaum, he is one of a kind. I could kiss the man for getting this guy for virtually nothing.

Jets fans rejoice, your team us finally working for you!

  120. avatar Joe B. says:

I’m not a huge Cromartie fan, but we got him for pennies and it’s so great to have a GM that actually goes for it. Tanny and Rex are trying to build a perennial SB contender, not just a one-year team. If we can land an edge rusher to pair with Pace and have a healthy Jenkins for 16 games, this defense is going to be frightening. Historically great defense frightening.

  121. avatar Bent says:

Brendan – “Well, Bent…I called it, haha. “

Yep, and I called it too. I’d say a conditional third rounder potentially rising to a second rounder makes us both right!

Eddie – “Bent- you are the man

NFL Live is basically saying the same thing you did

They are saying this is a “match made in heaven” for A.C and the Jets

Jets blitz and make the QB get rid of the ball faster than just about anyone…Cromartie is a pure man corner who struggles when Merriman and the SD pass rush went down, forcing more zone coverage

Rex and the D is making QBs get rid of the rock in under 3 seconds consistently, its going to be a very tall order throwing on the Jets”

I don’t remember saying that, but thanks anyway!

  122. avatar Tos9987 says:

Very happy with the trade . We just need him to shutdown the #2 WR ill take the weak tackling .

Now go get a pass rusher so we dont need to blitz every down . think about if we only send 4-5 guys and get good pressure . QB’s heads are going to explode .

I still think we draft another CB somewhere . I hope they trade down the first pick still . But I dobut it

  123. avatar Green Goblin says:

Great move by Tannenbaum!!!!!!!!! Now go sign Adalius Thomas after the Patriots cut him tomorrow and this defense has the potential better than the 2000 Ravens!!!!!!

  124. avatar klecko71 says:

un freaking real….just heard about the deal….. too many drinks last night……didnt get on my laptop when i got home =)

    a 3rd that can be a 2nd….. steal

and he covers the #2 receiver….. good luck throwing against us ever….

and he is playing this yr for a new deal…..

his agent “ummmm you are now playing for the jets, along side the best corner in the nfl…dont be an ass and say hello to a new contract with the best defense in football in #$!@## new york….. the $$ for the kids will seem like tips”

the guy is an off field ass….and one could argue nyc wont exactly help that…. but my bro is a top matrimonial lawyer, so if he gets in “kid trouble” again we got his back!!!

  125. avatar AKA....Drew says:

We can thank S Greene for this trade. After his crushing run and (smart move by Cromartie) to not tackle him he became hated.

Cheers to Mr Green. You took TJ job and got us a All Pro caliber CB

  126. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Our limited pick in 2010 just became irrevilant

Would love to hear the Mr T haters now

  127. avatar Brendan says:

Drew, you know they’ll find something to rip Tanny about.

  128. avatar daleinct says:

Holy poop…I’m numb. I can’t wait to see what’s next. This is crazy good!

  129. avatar Bent says:

Drew – “We’re already one day into free agency and we haven’t signed ANY free agents. If we carry on at this rate we won’t sign anybody.”

    How’s that?

  130. avatar JCVD says:

Well, looks like the Jets have another island emerging,

    “The Island of Misfit Toys”

  131. avatar C Low says:

How is this a steal? We got a rent-a-player and at best lost a 3rd round 2011 pick. I know Cromartie > than the best rookie CB in 2010 but the Jets do not have any tight windows….”its not win now and mortgage the future”. The way Mr. T has been drafting why lose more pics on this head case coming to NYC of all places. I would of rolled the dice on a talented CB stud in the first round instead of rolling the dice on a rent-a-player project who might not BUY-IN!

  132. avatar Brendan says:

If he performs he’s not a rent-a-player. And next year’s draft is going to be much weaker than this years because of all the udnerclassmen entering this draft a year early.

  133. avatar Bent says:

“We got a rent-a-player and at best lost a 3rd round 2011 pick.”

It depends on the new CBA/potential lockout, but when he leaves, they will almost certainly get back some compensation, which will perhaps replace that pick.

    Either:
    - He leaves as a free agent and the Jets get a compensatory pick, which could be up to a third rounder
    - He could be an RFA again, in which case they can tender him and trade him, perhaps for a third round pick
    - If he’s a UFA, they would also have the option to sign him to a transition franchise tag and trade him, perhaps again for a third round pick
