The Night That Was: Jets Trade for Cromartie

by Bassett on March 5th, 2010 at 1:39 am

Looks like the Jets are closing up the shop for the night. As a quick reminder, here’s wha the Jets got up to on the eve of free agency.

We’ll leave you with this new video from OK Go “This Too Shall Pass” that we think is pretty cool.

Tomorrow, we’ll give you some thoughts about how this now changes the Jets plans for the rest of the offseason. G’night!

Question, and quite possibly a dumb one. Say there’s no 2011 season, and therefore no draft. What happens to deals for 2011 picks? Do they turn into deals for 2012 picks?

  3. avatar Chemaster says:

Even if there’s no 2011 season, there will still be a draft. It’s just that those rookies (along with every other player in the NFL) wouldn’t have any games to play.

  4. avatar mike s. says:

    Great move.
Rookie Corners are targets in the NFL. Trade and Free Agency were the only options to upgrade fast enough for the 2010 season.

  5. avatar Igs, the double agent says:

    Damn.
    Geepers.
    Chromartie?
    For a 3rd round pick?
    In 2011?
    Are you kidding me?
Does tanning-bum have pictures of aj smith with a hooker?
    Wow.
I’m still hoping that the Jets sit tight in this draft.

  6. avatar Green Goblin says:

Great move by Tannenbaum!!!!!!!!! Now go sign Adalius Thomas after the Patriots cut him tomorrow and this defense has the potential better than the 2000 Ravens!!!!!! Also, if Coles will come cheap then the Jets should sign him….He’d be perfect in the slot and a great influence on Edwards.

  7. avatar WOJF says:

I like the move IF it is truly for a third rounder.

I suspect the second round escalation will be easily attained and would not be surprised if it could escalate to a first based on the historical innacuracy of the initial reports on these deals.

Calculated risk, a la Shephard, but with more upside.

I just hope they dont break the bank to lock him up long term until he proves himself and that it does not mysteriously turn into a first round pick.

  8. avatar Bent says:

Wise – In recent years, if reports have been inaccurate, they’ve usually been BETTER for the Jets than initially reported. I have often wondered if the front office does this on purpose.

Also, when using conditional picks, Tannenbaum has been consistent in only allowing the pick to graduate when it will have proven to be worth that. For example, if it was a first rounder but only if the Jets reach the Superbowl and he starts every game, I think anyone would go along with that as being worth it.

  9. avatar Brendan says:

    WOJF,

It can only raise to a 2nd rounder based on playing time.

In my mind, if he’s starting every game, it’s worth a 2nd rounder anyway.

This has to be a good trade, even Igs is behind this one.

  10. avatar AKA...Drew says:

There is nothing to not like about what has happened here.

Kids, traffic tickets, ego, 2nd/3rd 2011 pick……are all files under the who gives a crap file

I have a man crush on Mr T

  11. avatar AKA...Drew says:

Besides on the field…..where it improves our pass rush and pass defense

it makes out limited draft picks this year a mute point. We just drafted a ALL pro caliber CB and still have a 1,2.5.6.7 plus comp picks

  12. avatar WOJF says:

I acknowledge you are the pro on this matter but I thought Lito’s escalated a quicker than initially reported?

Also, DRob and Vilma, while unloading rather than adding, were highly inflated in the initial reports, the Vilma thing was totally predictable once the facts came out.

All I am saying is it is too early to judge the value sacrificed, lets wait for the true details to become public. That said, it appears a fair deal (not a steal) on a risk/reward basis as now stated, I just hope they make him play out the contract rather than giving him the money.

This is a turning point in this young man’s life, his red flags are a lot brighter and more widespread than Edwards’, hope he sees the light.

  13. avatar Frank says:

Very happy about this move! Tannenbaum does it again…

Anyone think that the back story to this is that AC is insurance against Revis asking for a Nnamdi-like contract?

  14. avatar Brendan says:

    Frank,

No one would be dumb enough to ask for Nnamdi’s contract, because no sane person would award it to a player (but I get what you mean). I doubt that’s what they’re doing here. Cro fits what they need opposite Revis (a big corner who is athletic enough to match up with big receivers as well as smaller, quicker receivers) so I think it had more to do with solidifying the secondary more than anything else.

  15. avatar Bent says:

Wise – I think the Lito deal was initially reported as two picks, but then later revealed to be one pick up front and one conditional pick (which would have only been a 2nd rounder if it was worth it).

Robertson was a bit different because they completed a better trade first and then he failed his physical.

If I recall correctly, people were going nuts over the fact that the Jets only got one pick for Vilma, but then it was later revealed that they also had a conditional pick (which they ultimately didn’t get, but still…)

Favre was initially reported as a first round pick.

The highest Braylon pick was expected to be at least a second rounder in the initial reports.

Jenkins’ contract was much, much less than initially reported, as was Woody’s and both Gholston and Rhodes had about $4m less guaranteed money in their deals than the initial reports.

I’m telling you, they do this on purpose. (Probably).

  16. avatar WOJF says:

I try to be objective when it comes to Mr T’s moves, I really do although most would disagree. I just tend toward a devil’s advocate position in most things in life, a hazard of my profession.

That said, I think he absolutely nailed the tenders (as did TJB). None of these guys are essential, and all are perfectly positioned to bring back fair value if someone overpays, as I actually think they will.

I think Edwards may find interest in PIT, CIN, BAL, NE or MIA (which he would love).

I think Leon is gone, someone will pay him too much, and I have no problem with that at all. Again, MIA, NE NE and perhaps SD are prime candidates.

Ditto Brad Smith, but unlike the top two I am rooting hard here for him to go. His value is at an all time high after his high profile big plays, someone, perhaps CLE, will make him an offer and the Jets should take the pick and run.

Clemens will find a home, perhaps in BUF or CLE but more likely SF, OAK or SEA, back home in the Pacific Northwest.

I want Digs and Wright to stay and think they will, unless CLE snags Wright.

I believe Rhodes will be traded, but perhaps for a RB as opposed to picks.

Bottom line, Jets may have plenty of picks to work with, either to use in the draft or as compensation for RFA.

As for targets, Adalius is logical and cost only money and should be in house this week.

At RB I would love to grab Justin Fargas, not even sure of his status but he is a very nice back that is not appreciated in his current home.

  17. avatar Brendan says:

    WOJF,

I think your crystal ball is broken. No one is going to give up a 1st & 3rd rounder for Braylon. He’s not worth it. That’s why the Jets tendered him there, so teams wouldn’t go after him.

Leon is coming off a severe break in his lower leg, and he’s gone? It’d be surprising if a team gave us a 2nd round pick to sign a guy coming off of a devastating leg injury.

Clemens? Teams are going to give up a pick for him? I pray you’re right, but I doubt teams will surrender a pick for a guy who hasn’t really shown enough to earn that.

I don’t think Rhodes is going anywhere. With Cromartie’s all-or-nothing style they need Rhodes’ cover skills to play the safety valve like he has done the past two years.

I like Fargas & Mike Bell to be the 3rd RB in our 3-headed monster. Either would be a good between-the-tackles banger.

  18. avatar Andy says:

Totally love this move. For a third rounder maybe a second in 2011? Awsome! Now lets get a pash rusher!

  19. avatar reality jet fan says:

Its great to see these unbiased opinions on the jet moves.

  20. avatar reality jet fan says:

This guy is a piece of garbage off the field and his team couldnt wait for him to go . thats cause for concern?

  21. avatar Bent says:

“I don’t think Rhodes is going anywhere. With Cromartie’s all-or-nothing style they need Rhodes’ cover skills to play the safety valve like he has done the past two years.”

I agree in principal, but I would note that Cromartie has definitely toned down the “all-or-nothing-ness” of his game over the last year. We’ll see what the team thinks in due course.

  22. avatar Bent says:

reality – Sure it is. But at that price, the pros would seem to outweigh the cons, on balance.

I feel better about this move than I did about the Lito pickup.

  23. avatar Brendan says:

    Bent,

I know he’s been less of a boom-or-bust CB recently, but I think that when they traded for him they envisioned him going back to his more aggressive style, much like they did when they acquired Lito last year.

  24. avatar WOJF says:

Brendan, you underestimate the desperation at QB in this league, someone will take a shot instead of drafting a developmental QB in the third round.

Leon will almost definately get an offer, perhaps not a big offer that Jets would hesitate to match but someone will offer.

Same at WR, if you are a contender at the bottom of round one and need a WR, like BAL for instance, would you rather sign a proven Edwards or Marshall who still have upside or draft a kid that probably is not ready to contribute.

Most national media types expect plenty of action in the RFA area.

And I dont care, I will take the picks, or keep the players if the deals are reasonable, Mr. T has perfectly positioned them for this possibility.

  25. avatar Brendan says:

Well I believe teams are going to go after Marshall because the Broncos may even trade him for less than his tender. Braylon, I don’t see teams giving up two picks that high for a guy that has been inconsistent the last two years.

And, again, if someone is dumb enough to pick up Clemens, than I will be ecstatic. I just think teams would much rather draft a young guy to groom themselves instead of picking up the Jets’ garbage. People have tape on Clemens, and barely any of it is pretty.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a team signs Leon to a deal, but would be very surprised if it’s a deal so expensive that the Jets won’t match. I should’ve been clearer in my last post, that’s what I meant by my Leon comment.
