Are Murrell, Douglas Getting Courted by Other Teams?

by Bassett on March 6th, 2010 at 1:11 pm

Two Jets defensive players have been getting interest from other teams.

OLB Marques Murrell (Backup)– Has scheduled a visit with the Broncos. Murrell (6-2, 250lbs) the younger brother of former Jet running back Adrian, has appeared in 26 games during his three year career with the Jets and Eagles, making 17 ST tackles with 21 tackles from the linebacker position along with 2 forced fumbles. I think Murrell was a Mangini project, but he lost out to Jamaal Westerman who was active for 14 games in 2009 to Murrell’s 10. Murrell is a great special teamer, but wasn’t deemed a major priority for the team to keep as a tendered RFA.

DL Marques Douglas (Starter) — Douglas had 64 tackles, good enough for fourth-best on the team. That total should show just how good of a run-stopper he was for the Jets on the defensive line. While Douglas might yet return to play for Rex Ryan, the Panthers and Titans are evaluating and expressing an interest in the UFA. Not a well known player, his solid play helped the Jets stay strong on defense even with the loss of Kris Jenkins. My thought on Douglas not getting an offer from the Jets yet? Maybe one of three things: (1) they fully intend to draft a starter for the RDE spot, (2) they see Mike DeVito now as a player who can start for this unit or (3)Douglas clearly likes Ryan, so they’ve decided to see what offers he gets before making him an offer of equal value to bring him back to the Jets.

Note: if Douglas is picked up the Jets can sign a replacement UFA with an equivalent year one cap number. However, if Murrell is picked up, they will not.

    I wouldn’t call Murrell a “great” special teamer. He’s okay…

They have to keep Douglas, he has the third most tackles for losses in the NFL in the last seven years! (Or is it 8 now?) That stat always makes me laugh because he had a monster year in that category about 5 or 6 years ago and has ranked highly ever since as a result, because most of the other leaders at that time have now retired.

My take on Douglas is that Rex told him he would match any offer he received. That’s good player relations, then Douglas can’t feel slighted. I can’t imagine them not wanting him back.

  3. avatar Bent says:

To me, it depends if they have anyone lined up to sign that is a UFA that they view as more important than him. To be honest, I doubt that there is anyone, so hopefully you’re right, Ramble.

  4. avatar Reprocity says:

I would say he got burried under Gohlston… Economics won out and he never really got a fair chance.

Losing Douglas woul be just plain dumb… Why mess with a strength. I wonder how much moe he really wants?

  5. avatar sexy rexy says:

douglas is above average solid. He’s like a Jared Jeffries on the knicks. However personally….Id want Gholston to take his spot full time just because i still believe in gholoston( yea its dumb but im going on instinct)

  6. avatar sexy rexy says:

I think Gholston can be Ngata lite i really do.

  7. avatar trevor says:

the jets need depth and even if we draft a DE in rd 1 we need depth at the dline position

shaun ellis is getting older and devito is still developing

if we draft a solid DE on day 1 we could have one of the best dline rotations in the nfl with plenty backups so players can stay fresh

  8. avatar BigKatt says:

uhh Jared Jeffries sucks balls, please don’t ruin this website with Knicks refrences.

  9. avatar jcjets says:

Gholston has been playing linebacker for the jets. He was a DE in college in a 4-3 but I don’t know if he can play 3-4 DE.

Only thing I can think of is that since it’s an uncapped year, he wants to test the FA market, which I can’t blame him. Hopefully he will come back to the jets and see if they can match the offer, but it’s possible he will be gone. That would be a shame. He is solid against the run, and played well last year.

  10. avatar Dylan says:

I would be shocked if the Jets didn’t match any offer for Douglas. He was as solid as any of our defensive players last year, and he won’t cost much. He also loves playing for Rex and has a chance to win a Super Bowl here.

  11. avatar Nikolas says:

This team is almost complete. The only thing missing is a very good pass-rushing DE or OLB.

The 1st and 2 nd round picks, will improve the team further, whether it is WR/TE/RB/DE/OLB/S/CB, the question is will we be lucky enough to find our pass-rusher!
And realistically the only player that we can draft with this potential, between 29th and 61st, is Jerry Hughes. The problem is that if picked 29th the risk is high, and if we wait for 61st he will not be there! I think Tanny should try to trade down!

  12. avatar bleed green 24 says:

Never mind trading down.. Trade up and take brandon graham… If we stay put and we get hughes ill be happy… Watch tape on hughes he’s gonna be a good pro

  13. avatar ramble914 says:

    Nikolas,

My draft day dream is Jared Odrick in the first round and Jordan Shipley in the second.

  14. avatar sunsetmusic says:

    Sexy Rexy and Big Katt,

Would that make Vernon G our Eddie Curry…..LOL

    P.S. My Knicks suck…..Big Time!!!!! :(

  15. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

Shipley will be around far longer that the 2nd…

  16. avatar Dylan says:

    ramble914,

I like Odrick in the first, but the second round is way too high for Shipley. He had an awful combine (4.57 40) and turns 25 next season. He is projected to go in the 4th or 5th round.

  17. avatar Rich R. says:

@Dylan, I don’t think the Jets have the right to match any offer Douglas receives. He is an unrestricted free agent because unless I am mistaken, he did not receive a tender offer from the team.

Losing him wouldn’t be catastrophic, but it would make sense to make an effort to re-sign him. He was a starter and a solid player for us last year.

  18. avatar Nikolas says:

I like Odrick too, but we do not know if he will be available at 29 and let’s not forget that it is harder to find a very good pass-rusher that a very good DT/DE.
If Tanny can trade out and down from the 29th, before Parcells pick at 43?, then not only we can take a shot at Hughes but also we may get a late 3 early 4th pick and add a splot WR like Shipley!!

  19. avatar Dylan says:

    Rich R.,

What I mean is that they could offer him the same deal that any other team offers him. But yeah, if he agrees to sign with another team we lose him.

  20. avatar Brad says:

I think Devito is a lock for that RDE spot if Douglas doesnt come back unless we decide to take Odrick. I personally like Devito- when he has played he has been very solid and the RDE spot is more known to be a run stuffer than a pass rusher which is exactly what Devito is. Odrick is not great as a run stuffer and is better suited to fill Ellis’ role- but to me, he is to slow to fill Ellis’ role, does have great speed or agility is the scouting report. I personally would prefer to take Alex Carrington with our second round pick- perfect replacement for Ellis. Carrington draft status has been all over the place- some say late 2nd while others sites state early 4th rd. His statues has been on the rise since the Senior Bowl. There are plenty of DE that we can get in the later rds to be backups to Devitto, like: Mike Neal, C.J. Wilson – i really like this guy- passing rushing speed and power, and Corey Peterson; but finding an Ellis replacement is much harder that is why i would take Carrington with the 2nd round pick if he is their.

  21. avatar live4draft says:

I love Odrick and the 5 technique might be the toughest to find. We can all probably name 4 or 5 3-4 OLB prospects of the top of our head each draft. I can remember only one quality prospect each of the last two drafts Tyson Jackson last year and Odrick this year. We may have to trade up slight for him. If we want to build a perennial playoff team for the Sanchez Era we are looking at all players under 30 yrs old. From that perspective DL is our greatest need with OLB being 2nd unless a light miraculously turns on for Gholston. GET Odrick!! Also, does anyone know if we get a 5th rd pick back from Philly in the Sheppard deal?

  22. avatar Brad says:

Odrick DOESN’T have great speed or agility

  23. avatar live4draft says:

Did you watch the combine? Looked agile enough to me.

  24. avatar live4draft says:

I know it’s track speed Odrick ran faster time than any top DT not names SUH and a 10th slower than Carrington while weighing 20 more lbs.

  25. avatar Brad says:

also I would love to take RB Ryan Mathews in the first if he falls to us or Ben Tate in the 2nd rd if he falls to us since we release TJ. So i would love to go Mathews and then Carrington, but will live with Odrick and then Tate. Besides Brandon Graham- not sure if we will be able to get a good OLB/DE- pass rusher- like stated Graham probably wont be there at 29 and Jerry Hughes wont be there at #58. Our best option will probably be to trade back our 1 st rd pick to acquire two picks in round 2 and one pick in round 3. We do this and then we will probably be able to acquire guys like Hughes, Tate, and Carrington

  26. avatar live4draft says:

Agreed on Graham love him! Pure football player. Would be thrilled if he somehow falls to us.

  27. avatar live4draft says:

Still have a feeling Rex will be begging Mike T. to draft another CB. Wilson or McCourty.

  28. avatar Dylan says:

The only player in the draft that I would trade up for is Brandon Graham. If he falls to around 20, we wouldn’t have to give up very much. He has the strength, speed, and agility to be an absolute beast. This video says it all.

  29. avatar Head_Coach says:

shipley still might go low 2nd or high 3rd. Doubt he last to the 4th and 5th. I woudnt mind getting a pass rusher DE AND a pass Rusher OLB. Some people are saying either or. But i think the more options we have the better. That being said i like Huges and Graham. And i also like Odrick also and Kindle. What im trying to say is if we can get any combo of the two im for it. would like to trade down also if none of these guys are available.

  30. avatar live4draft says:

Agreed but 29 to 20 is going to cost at least our 2nd with a 3rd coming back based on the picks we currently have available to trade.

  31. avatar live4draft says:

At least one of those guys should be available. This draft is loaded! Any other year they would all be gone between 10 and 20.

  32. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Losing Douglas would be a bigger hit than losing Thomas Jones

B Graham is going to be a stud …..The other option is going D Williams out of UT. The kid can play outside at DE or come inside and play the nose when Jensk is out.

    He can be our Ngata

  33. avatar Dylan says:

If we draft an OLB and sign AD, BT would be expendable. How high a pick do you think we could get for him?

  34. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    Dylan

For BT? I am guessing a 4th at best. He is overpaid and is basically a run stopping OLB

I almost think he is more valuable for us to keep than what he would bring back but it would get crowded if AD is added

  35. avatar mike says:

jets just traded rhodes for a 4th rounder this year and a 7th rounder next year.. we are creating holes for no reason..

  36. avatar nyj2010 says:

What is the upside to the rhodes trade? So dumb…
