Kerry Rhodes is Traded to the Cardinals

by Weeks on March 6th, 2010 at 7:16 pm

We thought it wasn’t going to happen but apparently Mike Tannenbaum was itching to make another big splash … and something changed. According to Adam Schefter, Kerry Rhodes has been sent to the Arizona Cardinals for their fourth round selection in 2010 and a seventh round selection in 2011.

Filed to ESPN: Arizona trades a fourth-round pick this year and a seventh next year for Jets S Kerry Rhodes.

Arizona figured to make a move at safety once it lost Antrel Rolle. And now they have Kerry Rhodes — good move.

I honestly thought this wouldn’t happen but I guess the FO felt this was a move in the Jets best interest. For as much crap as Rhodes took he is one of the better safeties out there and now the Jets will almost certainly have to draft a safety in April as they have created a hole. I certainly wish Kerry the best with his new team.

Anyone else think we got robbed? And what do you think we should do in the draft?

  2. avatar Albert says:

Wow, we gave the chargers the rip and we just received it in return, awful trade

  3. avatar Ryan says:

not a fan of this trade so far! have to see what it leads to but how do we go from Rhodes to a player of Boldins caliber to Rhodes for a 4th round pick. Some people are also thinking this could be a move to shore up cap space for Brandon Marshall. well have to see

  4. avatar santi171 says:

DOSEN’T MAKE ANY SENSE…I HOPE THEY HAVE A BACK-UP PLAN!!!!

  5. avatar Fobi says:

idk how i feel about this yet, i’m conflicted

  6. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

So how long until Oshiomogho Atogwe is a Jet?

  7. avatar mike says:

so as of right now whom would be at safety??? and i agree marshall seems 2 be looming….i hope

  8. avatar Jason says:

DUMB MOVE. Who is going to make all the tackles Cromartie gives up on now? We better resign Thomas Jones.

  9. avatar Daniel says:

Will reserve judgment knowing this could be setting up another move, but so far I don’t like this trade. It feels like we got next to nothing for him.

I trust Tanny because he’s done an awesome job so far, so I’ll have to see what this leads to…

  10. avatar jleonhard says:

    Wtfffffff

  11. avatar alex morizio says:

    rhodes couldn’t cover my grandmother.

are you people serious??? he got benched at the end of the year.
and we got a 4th rounder for him.

he is ill equipped to be a starting safety for this team. he thinks he’s better then he is.

rex ryan couldn’t stand him. enjoy the flexibility in this draft. we can get another safety in the draft.

eric smith can fill in nicely.

    good move. let’s go.

  12. It was so obvious that Rhodes was NOT a Rex guy. This was inevitable.

The compensation(or lack thereof) should demonstrate to the Rhodes supporters that his reputation outside of NY was not stellar.

  13. avatar Ryan P says:

    really. come on tannembaum

  14. avatar TJBfan says:

    Wow I’m a bit shocked.

  15. avatar Jason says:

Also, sometimes i think Tanny gets too cute and overthinks with this stuff… KISS – Keep It Simple Stupid. Could have given Kerry one more year in Rex’s system to see if it stuck/commitment was there.

  16. Rex did not want Rhodes on the team next year.

I guess this was the best deal that they were offered.

  17. avatar tommyfromsi says:

im so happy right now…….he was a bum, weather it was for cap space or not well get a better player than him with these pics

  18. avatar Frankthetank says:

That’s all they got for him I don’t get it

  19. avatar Green Lantern says:

Good Move For The Cardinals…**** (excuse my language) I wanted Kerry gone but dang a 4th and 7th is that really the value of a talented safety?
Ughhhh get to the Safety Prospects now

  20. avatar Fobi says:

in other news, TJ is set to visit with the chiefs on monday

  21. avatar nyj2010 says:

just bad value… he is worth more and why create unnecessary holes? mr t just said yesterday the beauty of cromartie trade is to give us options on draft day, well now we have no options bc we traded rhodes for nothing without a good alternative… just not smart

  22. avatar Jason says:

AND, (ok, now i am ranting), we had the number one defense last year with all these spare/new parts the first year in a new coach’s system… shouldnt be messing with it, we were guaranteed to be in the top 10 defenses next year.

  23. avatar Steve K says:

I really don’t think the Jets would have pulled the trigger on this trade if they didn’t have another move lined up, something else could be coming soon

  24. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

Oshiomogho Atogwe has no pick compensation if signed, the Rams tendered him at the lowest possible…

  25. avatar ronnie says:

Maybe Ryan/Tanny think “who needs a safety when we have Revis & Cromartie”

Anyways, no way E. Smith is our starting safety next season.

I dont get our organization. We were 30 minutes away from the superbowl with very few holes (CB, DE/OLB) & we are creating more holes on this team (RB, S).

Everyone check my twitter account, yesterday after the Jets acquired Cromartie, Rhodes was tweeting other things besides about his new teamate, right then there I knew they had an agreement to trade him.

  26. avatar john l says:

    f@#&ing PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!

  27. avatar jetmetvet says:

I think Sanchez is voting for a Sharper replacement………

    juuuust kidding

  28. avatar Daniel says:

Calm down everyone! Tanny must have SOME idea what his next move will be. Clearly they didn’t want Rhodes on the Jets, and if this was their best offer, clearly other teams didn’t value him too highly either. If he thrives in Arizona’s system, at least he’s in the NFC.

Let’s hold off and see what this leads to and then judge it.

  29. avatar mole57 says:

I can’t believe they couldn’t have gotten at least a third rounder for him.

  30. avatar Green Lantern says:

Antoine Bethea? Ryan Clark? Earl Thomas? ERIC BERRY??????

  31. avatar Fobi says:

i mean it seemed like rhodes was making efforts in this offseason to get on the same page with everyone…i don’t get it

  32. avatar levi says:

That is a shocking trade. I think we could have gotten more for him but I guess Tanny must have a plan.

  33. avatar jetsfan101 says:

There just has to be another move I mean otherwise this is just an awful trade.

  34. avatar I New York I says:

Eric Berry rumors pleaseeeeee. Hopefully not Mays though he’s the second coming of rhodes. Tanny does like to trade up.. and now he’s got some ammo to do so?

  35. avatar Spiegs311 says:

to the guys thinking the rhodes trade is to free up cap space, let me remind you this is an uncapped season

  36. avatar Dylan says:

WTF! What a terrible move by Mr. T!!!
He better have a backup plan… Or else welcome to NY Taylor Mays… I don’t know why he would give up Rhodes for so little. Maybe for a 2nd rounder but for a 4th? You have got to be kidding me! We just got robbed…

  37. avatar Dave says:

Package picks and move up to take Taylor Mays from USC?

  38. avatar Fobi says:

    daniel,

i’m hoping you’re right and that’s the case

  39. avatar OriginalJetFan says:

James ihedgbo or whatever his name is a a starter? Can’t be, I,m thinking a safety at 1 and maybe the 2 and 4 for Marshall? Maybe waiting or some other safety to get cut? As a lot of you have mentioned this has gotta be Tanny with an opening gambit setting up a checkmate!

  40. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

Say no to Taylor Mays, he’s the 2nd coming of Darnell Bing…

  41. avatar AKA....Drew says:

I dont agree with this trade at all….but I will not question Rex….This is Rex’s call 100%

It looks like we are in the market for a safety in this draft

  42. avatar Jeffdolfini says:

Bent I know you didn’t write this article, but you seem to know alot about the cap. Don’t you think this was done as a cost cutting move too? Now they clear 7 million for next years cap right? That is so we can lock up everyone that needs new contract. I don’t hate the move at all. I think we are going to sign a hard hitting safety for alot cheaper or draft one.

  43. avatar Drew says:

Kerry obviously wasn’t fit for here…Eric Smith had a ton of playing time before we got Leohnard, so he may start, plus Ihedibgo has been up and coming and could see some time. Disappointing, but I guess this needed to be done.

  44. avatar BigKatt says:

If Tanny somehow moves up to take Eric Berry he is a God. If he drafts Taylor Mays he is a retard.

  45. avatar EddieC says:

i’m holding out on flipping out so i can see what tanny is about to do… Only a 4th rounder? a 7th is about as valuable as a bag of marbles, we got ripped

  46. avatar J-Kay says:

Works for me, I was sick of his crap. Lets go draft Myron Rolle or sign OJ Atogwe

  47. avatar Rhodes is SOFT says:

Great trade, now I hope they make an even biggers splash by trading up to get Eric Berry.

  48. avatar phil says:

lets see what the jets do with the extra 4th rounder in april, until then, you can’t kill this trade. trading up in the draft brought us Keller, Sanchez, Sean Greene and the best corner in the NFL, so its not exactly a strategy we can complain about. The jets prefer quality over quantity in the draft and this puts us in a better spot to move up in the draft.

Mabye he’s targeting a pass rusher in the first round. He has more ammo to do so now.

  49. avatar Rhodes_a_goner says:

Wow…. he goes to NFL purgatory as the Cardinals are a skeleton of what they were just a couple of months ago.

The Jets have 2 outstanding corners and serviceable safeties. There is a deep draft, I am not too concerned.

  50. avatar Ben Nevis says:

What surprises me is how little we got for Rhodes.

Looks like now we’ll be drafting a Safety with our first round pick. . .

  51. avatar Give Leon The Damn Ball says:

say what you want about rhodes being soft but he is much better in coverage than diggs and smith…i really dont like this trade at all, but will reserve judgement until i see what else tanny and rex do

  52. avatar jetsfan101 says:

Does anyone think a 2010 1st round pick, 2010 4th round pick and a 2011 second round pick to Buccaneers for a 2010 first roud pick would be accepted if so this a is a good trade because Berry is amazing.

  53. avatar BigKatt says:

Ooooooooohhh I think Myron Rolle would be an amazing choice at #61. Wow. He seems like a guy that the organization would love.

  54. avatar TheSanchize says:

So they could have easily gotten Anquan Boldin for Rhodes but instead they waited, Boldin got moved and instead they traded him for a late 4th round draft pick? What could’ve been.

  55. avatar Frankthetank says:

    Come on this move sucks

  56. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Cardinals just got better….Rhodes is better than Rolle as cost them alot less

  57. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Adam Schefter:

“Chiefs scheduled former Jets RB Thomas Jones to visit KC on Monday.”

Christ, I hope Tanny can lure TJ back.

  58. avatar BigKatt says:

And yea i think that’s a good idea jetsfan101. Berry is the next coming of Ed Reed.

  59. avatar jeothejet says:

    wtf,r u serious dumb ass tannenbaum?a 4th?we could have gotten at least a 2nd rounder,and a 5th,what a dumb ass move

  60. avatar Rhodes is SOFT says:

I wouldve demanded a 3rd rounder if I was the Jets because the Cardinals are desperate since they lost Dansby and Rolle, but regardless Im happy to see this prima dona leave.

  61. avatar Dave says:

I trust Rex and Tanny. They clearly didn’t think Rhodes was a championship calibar player. And I completely agree. Were talking about the same Kerry that was benched last season. We will win without him.

  62. avatar jeothejet says:

justin fargas got cut,we can sign him for the cheap for 2 years, not a bad back, and has lil mileage on his tires.

  63. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

Myron Rolle isn’t the player the press makes him out to be. They line about him picking Oxford over 1st round money last year is a straight lie, he was a borderline 3rd rounder.

    He lacks ball skills…

  64. avatar James says:

This is the worst move Tanny has made since he’s been the GM. Bar none.

  65. avatar alex morizio says:

KERRY RHODES WAS SOFT. NOT AN IMPACT PLAYER.

FOR 5 MILLION A YEAR, WE COULD FIND someone else.

he will not be the difference for this team making the playoffs or not next year.

leon washington was a 4th round pick. brandon marshall was a 4th rounder, and so was brandon jacobs. t

this is a VERY deep draft. great trade. we clear cap space,(2011 will be capped), and get flexibility in a deeeeeeeeep draft.

  66. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    BigKatt

M Rolle will not go before round 4. He ran a slow 4.7 at the combine and hasnt played in over a year.

He had ONE INT in his 3 years at FSU. He is a decent prospect but he is not going to be a top level player.

  67. avatar Dave says:

I don’t see how you can rip into tanny for not “getting enough”. None of us now what Kerrys worth is around the league. Everyone know the guy is a prima donna.

  68. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

GREAT MOVE BY JETS NOW LETS FIND A PLAYER WHO LIKES TO GET DIRTY.

  69. avatar Rhodes is SOFT says:

@the sanchize Jets wouldve had to give Boldin a new contract not to mention hes pushing 30 and is concussion prone.

  70. avatar Bkkilla says:

i dont think we are better off with anyone who plays safety available in the 4th rd. trading up for berry would b way 2 costly

  71. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    alex

Rhodes was also a 4th round pick and should have brought back better value. This is Rex saying we dont want you on our team and good luck in Arizona

I will not go against Rex here but the value for Rhodes should have been higher

  72. avatar jetsfan101 says:

Although right now I disagree with this trade Tanny knows what hes doing and he has to have something in mind. He might be thinking we could move up and a Berry and have a few million extra to lock up Revis and Mangold.

  73. avatar phil says:

and to those that think we should have gotten much more, take a look at what the cardinals got for Bolden who in my opinion is a much better WR then Rhodes is a Safety. If you were expecting a second rounder then you were dreaming. this is not Troy Polamula.

  74. avatar AKA....Drew says:

For the record I am not nor should anyone rip Tanny for this move. This is all about Rex realizing he wouldnt fit his system and the league knew we wanting to get rid of him. Its fair value but not great value.

  75. avatar Scouse Jet says:

Good move to trade him out of the conference.

  76. avatar levi says:

could leonard move to fs and Diggs or E. Smith to ss?

  77. avatar alex morizio says:

    aka drew……

we got back what we drafted him at. what makes you think we should have gotten more for him???? i totally disagree with you. he never made the pro bowl. he got benched this year. he doesn’t take football seriously, and he absolutely thinks he’s better then he is.

where do you think on his resume as a football player that we should get more than that?
    tell me your thoughts

  78. avatar Mhc2930 says:

I actually want Mays. Im a big USC fan and he was a monster for them. He could be the perfect fit for our defense at safety. I guess Tanny just wanted Rhodes out.

  79. avatar Rhodes is SOFT says:

@jetsfan101 If they move up to get Berry than they wont have extra money to lock up Revis and Mangold because rookies in the top 5 get paid a lot.

  80. avatar Junior says:

Saw it coming when rex was on espn radio after the season he said Braylon but Rhodes he said we have things to discuss. Who’s playing safety for us?

  81. avatar david65 says:

i feel a trade up for a safety. maybe eric berry

  82. avatar john l says:

i may be wrong but they are not giving these bonuses because they cannot sell these tickets i mean i am getting a call from the jets every other day for christ sake!!!!!!!!!!

  83. avatar jetsfan101 says:

@Rhodes is SOFT I know they do but he get a 5yr 25 million deal which I believe is a few less than what Rhodes would make in 2011.

  84. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

Pick up Oshiomogho Atogwe for pennies. No pick compensation.

  85. avatar Rizzo says:

    Taylor Mays

  86. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    alex

I detailed my thoughts before you responded… I feel we got fair value fair him nust not great value.

While Rhodes didnt work under Rex’s systen he “was” a very good to near ProBowl player in the 3 previous years.

Like I said…..the value was fair just was hoping to get 3rd round value for him……

  87. avatar phil says:

“this is a VERY deep draft. great trade. we clear cap space,(2011 will be capped), and get flexibility in a deeeeeeeeep draft”

Great point that no one is making. Everyone is screaming about not letting TJ go or this trade saying it doesn’t help our cap situation, except they are forgetting about 2011 when there will be a cap.

  88. avatar Rhodes is SOFT says:

We need a Polamolu type safety to be almost another lineback in run support and ball hawk in coverage.

  89. avatar Jets = Misery says:

    Well this is just fantastic…

  90. avatar joe0991 says:

this is a bad move nobody on our roster has the range that kerry rhodes has. Whose gonna play fs for us….Eric berry? Earl Thomas?

  91. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    phil-

TJ had one year left on his contract—2010.

His salary would not have affected us in 2011 at all.

  92. avatar E. Weeks says:

I guess I better start the Prospect Watches on the safeties now …

  93. avatar dtrain says:

for all the rhodes haters out there… this is what u get… this is a horrific trade for the jets… i dont see what the plan is here.. i love tanny but i hope we can all look back and say wow they knew what they were doing

  94. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

    Rhodes is SOFT,

Problem is, Polamalu type safeties aren’t easy to come by…

  95. avatar Big_Papi says:

For All you Wannabee GM’s out there, Kerry Rhodes was a
liability just look @ the colts game.

Stop whining I trust that Mike Tannenbaum will find a better replacement for less money.

  96. avatar Frankthetank says:

I hope this is a trade up for mays

  97. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Drew-

I agree: I thought we could have gotten more for Rhodes.

He was a monster, but he was a very solid cover corner, and pretty good blitzer.

  98. avatar AKA....Drew says:

I know there are soe USC fans out there but Mays stock dropped bigtime after all of the legit NFL players on defense left last year.

He is a brusing hitter but is almost disgusting in coverage. He will be drafted at moved to LB due to his coverage.

The Cowboys made this mistake when the drafted Roy Willimas out Texas. He could hit like a truck but had “combine” speed and couldnt cover

Whoever drafts Mays will be sorry they did

Berry is the only star safety coming out and I dont think we have the ammo or need to go get hom

  99. avatar Rhodes is SOFT says:

I dont what happened to Rhodes, in 06 he was outstanding and made plays all over the field and ever since then hes gotten worst and worst.

  100. avatar Ben Nevis says:

That should have been: he WASN’T a monster.

  101. avatar Daniel says:

If only we did this before the season when his value was a bit higher…

  102. avatar joe0991 says:

i HOPE tanny has something up his sleeve

  103. avatar alex morizio says:

    aka drew….

didn’t see prior posts. sorry. so many people blogging right now!! LOL

i see your point. for sure. but this was a guy who hasn’t played up to his abilities in almost 3 years. think about that. the jets were considering cutting him!!!! it was talked about last week. he actually could have been cut!! so to get a 4th rounder, in a very, very deep draft, is astounding. people hoard these picks like gold, and we got a decent pick. i would imagine that this is like a 3rd rounder in other years.

  104. avatar MEL31602 says:

    http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/15167/rhodes-signed-through-2013-season

Yeah Phil check this out apparently Rhodes contract makes it impossible for him to be traded in a capped year which is probably why they had to settle for lesser value now

  105. avatar Rhodes is SOFT says:

I agree AKA Drew, Mays is so bad in coverage he makes Roy Williams look like a ball hawk.

  106. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

Despite what ESPN spews out, Taylor May isn’t that good. He can hit hard, that’s it. No technique and no ball skills.

He’ll be Darnell Bing all over again, USC safety who can’t play S, moves to OLB, then washes out of the league…

  107. avatar Brad R. says:

Earl Thomas could be had in the teens of the first round. He’s a stud. Mike Mayock likes him better than Berry actually.

As for some mentioning Myron Rolle…. dude is slow. Not a great athlete. Definitely not a starter for any team next year.

I don’t like that we created a whole. Our secondary was set. Rhodes rebounded from his benching and is at the very least an above avg safety. we won’t find a starting FS with the cards 4th rd pick.

What about Darren Sharper? He is still out there. Not many years left in the tank, but a ballhawk that could thrive in Rex’s system.

  108. avatar Mhc2930 says:

Everyone says Mays is bad in coverage, well, at USC he was never really asked to cover anyone, just zone the field and b a playmaker with hits and things like that. This guy is a gamechanger. I want him or Gibril Wilson anyone?

  109. avatar Alex says:

Great move. I hoped for this day. Kerry was all about himself. This guy is closer to his goal in life Hollywood. Im sure his teamates are as happy as I am to see him go. What a great offseason.

  110. avatar Kramer says:

This was dreadful. First of all, if they intend to have eric smith james ihedigbo start, that has to be a joke. Secondly, kerry rhodes is most definitely worth more than a 4th and 7th round pick. Perhaps we can get oj atogwe from the rams. but i despise this move.

  111. avatar Rhodes is SOFT says:

Sharper would be nice but hes gonna be looking to get paid with a long term deal, and at his age I dont think it would be wise.

  112. avatar Ziggy says:

This strikes me alot like the vilma trade. I didnt like that one either. Vilma didnt fit in Mangini’s system but instead of trading him when he had a great reputation they waited until he had a bad year and then got only a 4th for him.

Obviously I assume and hope that Tanny has something else in mind but I dont get this by itself.

  113. avatar ronnie says:

Dwight Lowrey can be a replacement at safety for Rhodes. He sure has the ball skills & tackling ability (stripping the ball) he’s just not good a covering which he wont have to do as much from safety.

  114. avatar firstdown77 says:

We had a put an end to Rhodes’ shenanigans. I wish we got more in return though – like their slot receiver.

  115. avatar Daniel says:

What would you guys think about this???

-Sign Sharper/Atogwe to play FS short-term

-Trade up to get CJ Spiller (swap 1sts, give up this year’s 4th, and next year’s 2nd)
    *Do you think that’s enough?*

-Draft a pass rusher with this year’s 2nd

  116. avatar Marc says:

Rhodes is worth more than a 4th and a 7th, but the Jets probably wanted to unload his contract, because he was certainly not living up to it.

Lets see who that 4th rounder turns into.

  117. avatar AJ says:

I believe they made this trade so they can also stack up picks to trade down in the draft….maybe they do pick berry, haden, mays or someone else.

  118. avatar AKA....Drew says:

I cant say this is awful in the long run though…Rex and the staff know what they need to win games

I will assure everyone E Smith or Digs will be our starter in September.

Mr T has more up his sleeve……thats for sure!

Whats the deal with Landry in Baltimore? RFA/UFA??

  119. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    ^ not be our starter

  120. avatar Albert says:

We made our secondary worse after making it better. I really hope theres a plan because based on that colts game, i have no faith in Eric Smith. Tanny’s messing up more than he’s doing good this year. Jone and now Rhodes for no reason. So if we traded Rhodes and knew we were trading Rhodes, why didn’t we keep Jones and pay him. Awful, this ruined my happiness over cromartie. We are now on the same boat as we started the offseason

  121. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Ziggy-

Vilma was a monster—we should never have let him go.

Rhodes is nowhere near as good, but he is a solid cover safety, and a pretty good blitzer.

Wish we had got a little more for him.

  122. avatar StopTheWildcat says:

some food for thought everyone, I feel we have a tendency to overvalue our players sometimes, and i think this is one of those times….think of it this way, if we were looking at a player like rhodes on another team would we be willing to offer a 2nd or 3rd rounder? i doubt it!

  123. avatar gangreen4ever says:

I heard the thing with Mays was he looked better because the people around him were really good too. well the thing is revis and cromartie are our linebackers an no one can run the ball on us so i would say YES to Taylor Mays

  124. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    ronnie-

Lowery can’t replace Rhodes. We’re going to have to pick up another Safety, either via trade or in an early round of the draft.

  125. avatar Daniel says:

What would you guys think about this???

-Sign Sharper/Atogwe to play FS short-term

-Trade up to get CJ Spiller (swap 1sts, give up this year’s 4th, and next year’s 2nd)
    *Do you think that’s enough?*

-Draft a pass rusher with this year’s 2nd

  126. avatar wallace wright 15 says:

seriously this is the best we can get for a guy who had two pro bowl caliber years in 07 and 08? can’t say this makes us a better team, only worse now

  127. avatar Rhodes is SOFT says:

I think Landry is RFA, he would be decent cause he can bring some toughness and big hitting to the D.

  128. avatar JetOrange says:

I thought we stole Comartie for a third in 2011. This deal sucks but it is reflective of the market…
Rex has a message, buy in or your gone.

  129. avatar joe0991 says:

remember rex apparently loves landry from baltimore….possible move?

  130. avatar Ben Nevis says:

I was really looking forward to seeing Revis, Cromartie, Leonhard and Rhodes as our DBs this season.

    I thought we were set.

  131. avatar E. Weeks says:

    AKA Drew,

Landry is an RFA and is has been given a second round tender.

  132. avatar Rhodes is SOFT says:

What did you guys think Rhodes was worth a 2nd lol? Please Tanny knows what hes doing.

  133. avatar Mhc2930 says:

WE CNT GET SHARPER CAUSE HES A UFA! WE NEED SOMEONE TO SIGN ELSEWHERE TO SIGN SHARPER

  134. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Rhodes is SOFT-

I would have thought a third rounder this year, and fifth or sixth next.

  135. avatar Daniel says:

What would you think if we did something like this:

-Sign Sharper/Atogwe to play FS short-term

-Trade up to get CJ Spiller (swap 1sts, give up this year’s 4th, and next year’s 2nd)
    *Do you think that’s enough?*

-Draft a pass rusher with this year’s 2nd

  136. avatar Alex says:

I have news for you guys. He’s obviously not worth more than a 4th and 7th. Your as delirious as Kerry. Jim Leonhard outplayed him by far this year, with a broken hand. Kerry cares about nobody but himself. He’s a TO wannabe without the skills.

  137. avatar fattyboomboom says:

I’m just thinking we get humped on trades, Vilma for a 3rd now rhodes for what really amounts to a mid level 4th.

I just have to wonder if the Jets are totally tapped out with building the statium and toiling to sell seats, and can’t afford to pay any roster bonises.

Best of luck for kerry, god i’m going to be pissed if he makes the Pro bowl next season

  138. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Alex-

I love Leonhard as a DB. He’s a gamer. And Rhodes is not.

But Rhodes covers very well, and can also blitz well.

  139. avatar Kevino says:

    Ben,

    We got Jenkins for a 3rd & a 5th… Rhodes isn’t anywhere near the player Jenkins is…

  140. avatar E. Weeks says:

In other news fans of the Cards seem to be rejoicing.

  141. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

    gangreen4ever,

You logic is stupid. Going by it, it would be ok to stick any schmuck at FS just because Cro and Revis are the corners.

Wouldn’t you rather had someone who is good regardless of the talent around him or someone who “looks” good with talent surrounding him?

  142. avatar david65 says:

Mr T has been good so far. i mean chris baker and coles? everyone was freaking out about that and it turned out well.

hes thinking of something. just have a little patience.

  143. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Kevino-

I love Big Jenks as a NT, but he tires pretty easily, and we were actually better after he went down.

  144. avatar dtrain says:

in tanny i trust but its hard to really like this move… why not pull the trigger yesterday and at least get boldin in return? why create a hole for a very very important position… god i hope rex has his eyes dead set on someone

  145. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

    Daniel,

Can’t sign Sharper and OJ is looking for a long term deal.

Drafting Spiller would have no reason if Leon Washington is kept…

  146. avatar Jeff says:

Come on Tanny not even a for 3rd rounder???

I hopw its a conditional pick. Ih I sure hope there is a conditional pick somewhere.

  147. avatar Harvlis says:

If Rex let Rhodes go, he must not think much of him. Rhodes didn’t impress me, this season. There were many times where he threw his body at people and showed poor tackling technique. But, they should have gotten more for him. I would be okay with Smith and Ihedgbo, if we end up with Marshall. Go Tanny. Make it happen.

  148. avatar Dylan says:

Um how exactky can anyone think this is a “great move”? We gave up a very good starting safety for a late 4th round pick!! We added a hole to this team when we didn’t need to. I’m astounded by this move.

  149. avatar Joe says:

can the jets sign darren sharper?

  150. avatar Paul says:

We can sign Sharper because he played for a final 4 team.

  151. avatar Rhodes is SOFT says:

Ben Nevis really you think we were better when Jenkins went down wow are you sure your a Jets fan lol.

We coulda used Jenkins to stop Cedric Benson, Benson almost single handedly won that game for the Bengals.

  152. avatar AKA....Drew says:

If I was Arizona I would be thrilled also…..Rolle was just as overrated as most think Rhodes was but cost them ALOT less

  153. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Harvlis-

I agree that Rhodes’ great weakness is his lack of toughness, his inability to throw his body at people (as Rex would want).

But Smith and Ihedgbo can’t replace Rhodes.

Smith is a solid blitzer, and so is Kerry, but KR was also a solid cover safety.

We’re gonna need to pick up a very good replacement.

  154. avatar Organized Chaos says:

There’s another move in Tannys bag of tricks. They don’t usually roll like this. I

  155. avatar dtrain says:

“We can sign Sharper because he played for a final 4 team.”

did you just make that up? lol

  156. avatar Daniel says:

    Gulfbreeze,

Sharper comes from a final 8, doesn’t that mean it doesn’t count against our limited free agent signings?

Leon is coming off a broken leg and is a nice overall RB, but Spiller has the chance to be a star. Leon doesn’t have a lot of mileage, but he’ll be 28 and Greene/Spiller could be dominant for a long time.

  157. avatar E. Weeks says:

I don’t think Sharper is a UFA or RFA so yes the Jets could go after Darren Sharper. But at this point we might as well just draft a safety considering Sharper is 34 and only has a few years left.

  158. avatar sackexchange says:

    no sharper!!!!!

  159. avatar david65 says:

if they sign sharper everyone is going to think this is an awesome trade

  160. avatar Paul says:

    dtrain,

No I didn’t make that up.

  161. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Rhodes is SOFT-

I remember more than one analyst saying we IMPROVED against the run after Jenkins went down.

  162. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Sharper for 2 years? I wouldnt hate it

  163. avatar dmazz says:

If we get Sharper who says we wouldnt still go after a safety in the 1st?

  164. avatar Daniel says:

I’m fine with Sharper for a year or two, why not?

It buys us time to find a younger safety
Allows us to contend in the short-term
Allows us to draft whoever we’re targeting
He’s better than Rhodes even at his age

I don’t know why people are saying we couldn’t do it. He comes from a final 4 team, therefore the restrictions don’t apply.

  165. avatar Dylan says:

So I guess we should just ignore everything Mr. T says from now on… He said he expected Rhodes to be back and then traded him for practiaclly nothing. Un-freakin-believable!!!

  166. avatar PickNY says:

All of you don’t have a clue is the reason you are fans. Rex is dictating what he needs and it will get done, so stop speculating. Rhodes was soft and it was proven he shy away from delivering a knockout hit in the secondary. He care only for himself wishing and begging to be in the pro bowl. So you people think we could of gotten more for him better check yourself because you don’t have a clue on what’s coming down the pipe, so stop tripping non-ballers!

  167. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    E. Weeks-

I agree: we need to draft a solid safety in an early round. Or else we need to trade for someone solid (someone who’s not 34).

  168. avatar Mark says:

i like it. we now have 6 picks in what is supposed to be one of the deepest drafts in years. we need it after only 3 picks last year.

  169. avatar Shamik says:

That the hell was he thinking!?

  170. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

    Daniel,

I wasn’t referring to his availability to the Jets, Imeant they can’t risk signing Sharper because he is looking for a long term deal.

They won’t pick a RB in the first, they can get a scat back via free agency if Leon doesn’t come back healthy. Drafting Spiller is overkill…

  171. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

    just read the news…
    wow… this is interesting!

  172. avatar RJF says:

You guys cant be serious right? Now i’ll admit that maybe we could’ve gotten a 3rd for him, but as stated, it just sounds like other teams didnt value him that highly as some bloggers have. The guy had crazy lapses in his game. And i’m not even talking about the Pats game. Take the Jags game for instance and the poor tackling against Sims-Walker or him getting burnt by Marcedes Lewis for a 30yd gain…. Or the Colts game when he was out of position on the Dwight Clark TD before halftime…… Add all that together and getting ran over by Wes Welker and Mauroney, plus the benching and there you have it.

Now does every player seem out of position sometimes yeah, sure especially @ critical times, but this most definitely offers some flexibility. It was time for him to go. Since 06 or 07, he’s never been the same and if you cant play balls-to-the-wall in this system for Rex, he’s gonna lobby to get rid of ya!

I dont think anyone liked Hollywood more than me, Hell I even have the white #25 in my closet, but he fell off and definitely fell out of favor for us.

Now, we have his replacement on our team already and his name is Dwight Lowery. Of course, I dont think he has the speed to play CB, well at least I dont think so. But he has more than enough to play FS. And he’ll hit the hell out of ya. In his rookie season, he lead all CB’s in forced fumbles.

Now we can draft 2 CB’s instead to being limited to one. If we draft a FS, there are alot of them to choose from and the wont fly off the board until late 2nd or 3rd round.

We’ll be good though……… This guy didnt make this move to not know what he’s doing next. YOU DONT JUST GIVE AWAY QUALITY PLAYERS, HE’S DONE LEARNED FROM PETE KENDALL BLUNDER

  173. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    Dylan

I am not asking Mr T to play poker anytime soon…..major smoke screen on this move by Tanny

  174. avatar Dylan says:

    AKA….Drew,

    LOL seriously.

  175. avatar NYJ10 says:

sharper? marshall? maybe even ed reed? tannenbaum will strike soon.

  176. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

    Something has to be up..
It’s like chess, you always have to be a move ahead..

  177. avatar AKA....Drew says:

We could move Lowery to safety and then draft a top level CB.

I have a feeling Landry and Rex will be talking….2nd round tender? Maybe they are going that route?

  178. avatar jcjets says:

I don’t doubt that Mr. T has a plan, but so far I don’t like it it at all. First we don’t keep TJ over money, now we trade our starting Saftey of the last 4 years for a 4rth rounder this year, and a 7th next?? Just because he’s due a 2mil roster bonus? Why do they write up these contracts with these roster bonuses if it will then make them trade or cut the player because of it?

Anyway, I was ok with trading Rhodes, because I don’t think he’s a great fit, but I really don’t think we got fair value. Hopefully we can spin those picks into something..and sign someone to fill rhodes spot.

  179. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    RJF-

    Lowery can’t replace Rhodes.

Rhodes was a solid cover safety. Rhodes was also a pretty good blitzer. You can’t say the same about Lowery.

We need to draft a solid safety, or trade for one.

  180. avatar Albert says:

i’m still baffled at this trade

  181. avatar Daniel says:

    Gulfbreeze,

Where did Sharper say he wants a long-term deal? Does he really expect that at his age? I’m not questioning what you’re saying at all, I’m just curious where you’ve heard that.

If we did sign a guy like Sharper (making drafting a FS a lower priority for another year or two) and the pass rusher we want isn’t going to be available, you wouldn’t think about drafting Spiller? Spiller has tremendous upside and we need a 3rd RB. Greene may or may not have durability issues and Leon isn’t an every down back.

I agree it wouldn’t be the biggest need, but I sure wouldn’t mind seeing it. What about trading up for a Joe Haden (whose stock has reportedly fallen)? That would give our secondary great depth and allow a rookie to adjust to the NFL from the nickel position, where there would be less pressure.

  182. avatar AKA....Drew says:

I have been saying it since the Cromartie trade….Mr T has some ammo left

He traded Rhodes with a plan……We just have to wait to see it play out.

  183. avatar James in TN says:

awesome trade, too bad they wouldn’t take Gholston as well.

  184. avatar sackexchange says:

whatabout the colts saftey thats available

  185. avatar James in TN says:

Bethea , sign him. upgrading the spots. Love this FO!!!

  186. avatar Nick says:

Really? You people don’t thing Mr T has a plan? THis is a guy who ALWAYS has a plan of some kind.

I’m glad he’s gone. Kerry didn’t want to be here, he was a baby, a guy who was only about himself, and a locker room cancer.

One less turd in the building if you ask me.

  187. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    Ben

I dont think he can replace Rhodes but I think everyone always thought Lowery would make a better safety than CB

I like Lowery so I just want hmi to find a spot to contribute

  188. avatar RevisNButthead says:

I’ll reserve judgment on this trade for now. They HAVE to have something in the works. Do we know if this was a high pick in the 4th round at least? My only concern is fair value as well.

By the way, supposedly the Cardinals only have to pay $11 million to Rhodes over the next 4 years so the Jets basically paid him $14 million for one year. Can anyone confirm that? That’s a pretty good value if it’s true. Considering Rolle was asking for almost all of that in one year.

  189. avatar rich k says:

absolutely god damn retarded. tanny just canceled out his amazing cromartie trade with this bonehead move

  190. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

    Comedy:

A poster on a Cards fan blog had this to say:

“And he’s already been to a pro bowl! Hard hitting safety! I’m super stoked jumping up and down at work right now!!!”

    Anyone else find that funny?

  191. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

YOU GUYS ACT LIKE YOU ARE SHOCKED?
GETTING A 2ND AND 7TH RD PICKS IS A GREAT DEAL BETTER THAN RELEASING HIM FOR NOTHING BECAUSE THAT WAS PROBALLY THE PLAN.

  192. avatar Rich K says:

I thought Mr. “T” would package Rhodes with our #1 pick for 2010 & MOVE UP to grab an elite player ( LB/DEPass Rusher, shut down corner/safety etc)
NOT sold on Taylor Mays, most draft experts are saying that Mays is more suited for Line Backer then safety. PLEASE resign Thomas Jones- he was a GREAT guy in the locker room. SHARING the position with Green will keep Jones fresh for another play-off stretch run in December. Should be aninteresting draft week!

  193. avatar Dylan says:

    HOZ THE JET,

Dude we got a FOURTH round pick. Not a second rounder.

  194. avatar BigKatt says:

Lowery can barley play CB, i don’t think he’ll be playing safety next season.

  195. avatar rich k says:

    was mangini behind this trade?

  196. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

    4th rounder hoz

  197. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

MY BAD I MENT TO SAY 4TH

  198. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Drew-

You may be right—and I hope you are—but so far this offseason, Tanny’s made one move with a potential high reward/low risk (trading for Cromartie), and one move with a high risk/low reward (cutting Thomas Jone), and one move which forces to fill a hole we didn’t have before (trading Rhodes).

I’m hoping that Mike T can lure TJ back, I’m hoping he has his eye on a solid safety we can either draft or trade for.

But it’s a little nerve wracking until it’s actually done.

  199. avatar john l says:

i bet we get get guy the giants released

  200. avatar glocknsoul says:

Coaching staff obviously felt Rhodes wasn’t their type of guy. Mr. T. has been very creative to date, and doesn’t seem to do anything without a plan. I just hope he and the coaching staff have identified a couple of guys who are gettable at a reasonable price since they’ve temporarily (I hope) created another hole. This is widely regarded as a deep draft, so I’m all for gathering picks. Our biggest needs remain:

    1) Safety (this is obviously the newest)
    2) Dynamic OLB and/or DE
    3) RB
    4) OL depth
    5) WR

  201. avatar Live4Draft says:

What if this is Mr. T getting ready for the post uncapped era when he has to try to sign Revis, Mangold, Ferguson, Cromartie (if he reverts to form), Braylon (if he learns to look the ball into his hands), Leon (if he proves to be full y recovered and the occassional UFA. Maybe Mr. T. prefers all of those players to Rhodes.

Do have to find a replacement though! Hopefully not in the 1st rd of the draft.

  202. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

    Daniel,

I’ll try to find the article.

The only way I’d want the Jets to draft Spiller is if he winds up falling to the Jets. I would be heavily against them trading up for him.

I’ll reserve my judgement on Haden until his Pro Day to see whether or not his 40 was a mistake at the Combine…

  203. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Drew-

You were writing your post to me about Lowery while I was writing mine to you about Tanny.

Yes, I can see Lowery playing safety, but only if he were rotated in behind a starter, a starter we now have to either draft or trade for.

  204. avatar glocknsoul says:

I don’t think they’re planning to replace Rhodes with a draft pick. They’re a win-now team, and they need a veteran who’ll be able to pick up Rexy’s D quickly.

  205. avatar ronnie says:

    More of my tidbits:
    1) What’s funny is that this usually the type of deal that Tannenbaum does but the other way around
    2) Jets fans: Tannenbaum & Ryan deserve the benefit of the doubt
    3) TRUTH: A lot of you r pissed at the Rhodes trade b/c he replies to u on twitter…I can careless about that….the football field is what matters and he didnt play well enough this season
    4) Dwight Lowrey can take over at safety: he has the ball skills & tackling ability (stripping the ball)..he just cant cover that well

  206. avatar NYJ10 says:

would denver do a 2 and a 4 for marshall?

  207. avatar The Real RK says:

I don’t mind trading him but I don’t get how Rhodes gets a 4th and Cromartie gets basically a 2nd rounder assuming he plays alot which he will. Both players have pro bowl talent but have been inconsistent the last two years. I don’t get the compensation here

  208. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    ronnie-

    1. I agree: this is usually the kind of deal Tanny would make, but with us on the receiving end.

    2. In Rex I trust. Tanny not as much.

    3. I never even read a twitter post of Rhodes, couldn’t care less.

    4. Lowery can’t replace Rhodes. Rhodes is a solid cover safety, and a pretty good blitzer. You can’t say the same about Lowery.

We’re going to have to draft or trade for a very good safety.

  209. avatar Dylan says:

How about they sign Gerald Sensabaugh (2nd round tender) and then move Leonard to FS?

  210. avatar Daniel says:

    Gulf Breeze,

I recall Revis running about a 4.5 but then running in the 4.3′s at his pro day. I don’t put much stock in 40s anyway.

If Haden has the intangibles you’re looking for on tape, you consider getting him.

I really can’t wait to see what we do next. In his Jets tenure, I’d give Tanny an A- so far and it’s been building lately. Can’t wait to see what his next move is…

  211. avatar Rizzo says:

I say if we can do it, get Sharper for 1 year and draft safety next year. I think a pass rusher is still #1 priority

  212. avatar Live4Draft says:

A 4th in this draft is like a 3rd in any other. If this 4th gives us the flexibility to move up for Brandon Graham and he is our answer at OLB it will be well worth it to give up a DIVA safety.

  213. avatar Hangar says:

something is up…in T and Rex I trust!!!

  214. avatar jkjet64 says:

This pisses me off. there is no way we got the right value for him. And anyone who thinks we should use this to jump up and get a safety, you are all crazy. w need a pass rusher or stud DL before safety. With Revis & hopefully a renewed cromartie, we should think safety in the later rounds

  215. avatar andrew says:

    couple of notes

I thought we could have gotten more for rhodes but im ok with the fourth
tannembaum got the nickname trader mike for a reason so your stupid if you think there isnt another move coming

i really could see the jets getting bethea or eric berry
now you can afford a revis, mangold extensions
now we can trade for a player that needs an extension

  216. avatar ml2baumann says:

answer me this. how are we going to give better players such as revis and mangold new contracts if we had kerry’s big deal. plus rich cimini posted yesterday that the jets were interested antoine bethea.

I read that someone on Twitter said that Rhodes threw a punch at TJ. Can anyone else confirm this?

  219. avatar jkjet64 says:

I think everyone is underestimating the RB & Wr position also. Cotchery is Good, Braylon is an enigma and we have no third rec. Clowney is a speed burner but only seems to produce in preseason. Leon is coming back from a compound fracture and isn’t the biggest back. And Shonn Greene, as much as I love the Guy, i beleive is injury prone.

  220. avatar andrew says:

i forgot to mention a few replacements for safety
    besides bethea and eric berry

dont be shocked if ed reeds name comes up

  221. avatar sexy rexy says:

i really think this is a bad trade unless tanny’s got something else planned…..all we needed was a good pass rusher on d, and we were going to dominate…..wtf tanny??? i was just loving u for the cromartie trade then u go and do this?

  222. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

    Daniel,

FWIW Revis didn’t participate at the combine, he only ran a 40 at his Pro Day.

I don’t take alot into 40 times either, but I don’t really want a corner who runs anything past a 4.55.

  223. avatar AKA Jack says:

Why does everyone keep praising or damning Tanny? Did Rex suddenly become a doormat with no say in what is happening? Did Tanny bench Rhodes or did Rex?

I don’t give a damn what the PFF or any other stat machine said about Rhodes play this year, it was average at best and clearly did not fit this system and his attitude sucked. He was given every chance to be a stud in this system and he never bought in. With the corners we have we can do better with a less talented, more committed player. The play of the D line with guys like DeVito and Pouha playing far beyond their rating should demonstrate that.

    Later Hollywood.

  226. avatar andrew says:

no he was a final four team so we can sign him

  227. avatar Daniel says:

    Gulf Breeze,

You’re right actually. I do remember them saying in college he ran a 4.5, but maybe he improved his technique in time for his pro day.

I really hope we’ll sign Sharper or Atogwe and either trade up for an elite pass rusher or draft a pass rusher from the 29th spot and get younger in the trenches throughout the rest of the draft.

It’s a crazy pipedream that was mentioned above but I’d vote for Tannenbaum 4 Prez is he somehow got Ed Reed here.

  228. avatar sackexchange says:

  231. avatar Jake says:

No, I’m not a South Florida Alum.. and no I don’t really like him, but he could be a steal in the draft.

I just want people to read the scouting report and give me feed back.

  232. avatar andrew says:

i wouldnt say its a pipedream for ed reed but its not the most likely

  233. avatar jetfaninla says:

    Just Say No to Mays.

Overrated guy who had a great combine. Has big hits, but misses the small stuff.

I don’t think Mays is just like Rhodes. I think he’s actually a hybrid of Rhodes and Gholston.

  234. avatar mole57 says:

Bethea will cost a first rounder. Atogwe would cost a second, but the Rams will likely match any reasonable offer. We can’t sign Sharper until we lose a UFA of equal value. Ideas?

  235. avatar jkjet64 says:

Jake, don’t take offense. i was just joking.the guy sounds like a good prospect

  236. avatar john l says:

i changed my mind: screw rhodes we’ll get to the superbowl without him

  237. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

    Daniel,

I do like the thought of either, Atogwe moreso because of his youth(compared to Sharper). No trade compensation, reasonable price tag, alothough he is coming off a injured shoulder.

I wish the draft would hurry up and get here! Then all will be answered…

  238. avatar reality jet fan says:

So let me get this srtaight rex will fix a piece of garbage like cromartie but he couldnt fix kerry rhodes!

    James Ihedigbo

  243. avatar john l says:

    what video

  244. avatar Daniel says:

    mole57, Sharper is 100% available.

You people don’t pay attention! The UFA rules don’t apply to everyone! Other final 4 teams’ free agents are available to us. That would mean Mike Bell or Raheem Brock or Chester Taylor (before he was signed) would’ve been available to us.

  245. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

the off season just started don’t worry mike is warming up.

Oyea whoever thought REX didn’t have an PULL think again..

Nooooooo to Brandon Marshall.. Sanchize can’t spread the wealth to 7 different people..

  248. avatar Josh in Orlando says:

    don’t like this move.

  249. avatar andrew says:

quick question what would we have to give up to sign atogwe
as in trade compensation, a second rounder right?

  250. avatar andrew says:

    pick compensation not trade

  251. avatar Daniel says:

    jkjet,

It’s no diss, it’s just something that’s been talked about sooo much already that I thought more people would know.

But anyways, signing Sharper is very possible. We can only sign a UFA if we lose one of our own, but Sharper is an exception because we’re allowed to sign players from the other final 4 teams.

  252. avatar Steve in Philly says:

This better be all set up so that we get Eric Berry.

  253. avatar AKA Jack says:

    >>So let me get this srtaight rex will fix a piece of garbage like cromartie but he couldnt fix kerry rhodes!

Actually, not a good point at all. One has absolutely nothing to do with the other. Cromartie may have his issues off the field but he is still one of the best man to man cover corners in the league. Rex doesn’t have to fix his play, he just has to let him play his game which not coincidentally happens to be Rex’s game.

Rhodes was given a year to perform in a system which makes heros out of safeties. Ryan not only comes from a team that had Ed Reed but a division that had Troy P-hair in Pitt. He knows what he wants out of a safety, knows it is crucial to his D, and Rhodes blew his opportunity repeatedly.

Cromartie knows what he has to do to fit in here, play his game. I think he will. Rhodes knew what he had to do and he decided not to. You don’t fix pro football players, you tell them what is expected of them in the system and either the choose to let their talent and their attitude allow them to excel or they choose not to. Rhodes chose poorly. His choice has nothing to do with Cromartie.

  254. avatar mkj says:

maybe we’ll draft reshad jones out of georgia w/ our rd pick

  255. avatar sackexchange says:

tanny has a trick up his sleeve……time will tell

  256. avatar jkjet64 says:

Well, i didn’t know that and I try to follow closely. I thought it was every UFA. Which now makes me confused why the Jets didn’t try for Cheste Taylor. CRAP!!!

  257. avatar andrew says:

darren sharper makes sense for this team what an upgrade over rhodes

  258. avatar JerryB says:

I’m not sure Tanny has a back-up plan. He didn’t have one when he released Baker and Moore and had to scramble. The Jets were thinking a 4th now or pay him his $2MM bonus and try to get a #3 later. The decision was to save the $$.

  259. avatar david harris says:

how are we gonna get sharper lol?!?! we have those restrictions, he wont be taking a ridiculous pay cut when he could be getting a huge salary somewhere else. he just won a championship he’s not one of those players who will be willing to take a pay cut to experience it.

what a stupid move. we got fleeced.

  260. avatar jkjet64 says:

AKA JAck, I’m going to have to disagree with you. If you let Rhodes go after 1 year. And he came on in the end. Then let him go for a 4th rounder. Then you take a guy who has 7 kids from 6 different women and his play has gone down every year. how does that not translate to something of the same thing?

  261. avatar bleedsgreen&white says:

if you guys think that any old safety can replace Rhodes you guys are sadly mistaken. Eric Smith got taken to school by Dallas Clark, Digs is too raw and any rookie we get is going to be even worse than that. This is by far the worst move i have seen since being a Jet fan, its absolutely absurd like someone mentioned at the top we went from 30 mins from the Superbowl to a giant question mark. I really really hope Mr. T has a plan because to give up a player like Rhodes with unbelievable athletic ability and range for someone who is a rookie or washed up is just plain stupid to me. In my opinion Bethea isnt a upgrade and neither is a rookie at least in a win now sense. I wish Kerry the best and hope he thrives down there. I guess well have to wait and see what happens but i went from an high with the Cro trade to a low with this stupid move. I hope this works out!

  262. avatar sackexchange says:

sharper will not be coming here im sure of it….

  263. avatar Albert says:

I would be ok with this if he didn’t start, but he was awesome taking tight ends out of the game. Clark and Gonzalez. But now we most definitely need to make a move which would cost us more draft picks, we need to build depth too. We need pass rushers, lineman on both sides. This move creates another hole and forces Tanny’s hand to sacrifice getting depth and building this team for the long term. It’s just really upsetting. It’s one pick because a 7th rounder is the equivalent of an undrafted free agent.

  264. avatar andrew says:

brodney pool is visiting the rams this makes me think tanny will make a move for atogwe atogwe is very good

  265. avatar ronnie says:

People dont understand….if someone has a tender, his team can match any offer.

  266. avatar Greene23/#1 says:

not sad rhodes is gone … but only a 4th and 7th?

    ryan clark a possibility anyone?

  267. avatar greg sec130 says:

The pick we got for Vilma was used to get Shonn Greene. Do you really prefer we kept Vilma, never played David Harris, and not traded up for Greene?

  268. avatar andrew says:

    bleedsgreenandwhite,
i couldnt disagree with you anymore
bethea would be and upgrade eric berry would be an upgrade sharper would be a short term upgrade atogwe would be an upgrade

  269. avatar david harris says:

if the jets get a player of similar caliber to rhodes or better for something thats not much more than they gave up for him, then i am ok. but as stands i think the jets got absolutely murked.

i went from praising tanny to doubting him. he knows what he’s doing but was this a bone headed move?

  270. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    AKA Jack is right guys

With the two corners we have on the outside, Rhodes role was bound to be reduced. He just isnt as important to the defense as he was under Mangini.

I loved the guy when he came up but he obviously was not fitting into Rex’s plan for this defense and he had some issues once he got paid.

I wish KR luck in AZ but for those of you ready to jump off the Empire State Building, when has Tannebaum ever not had something else on the back burner when he makes a move like this…this is not the end of this, someone is being brought in here

  271. avatar andrew says:

i understand that but i dont think their gonna match his offer

  272. avatar jkjet64 says:

Tanny is only human and he is going to make mistakes. He can’t make every move the right move I think he messed up on this one

  273. avatar JetsFan4life says:

Plan had to be linked to Cro trade, i.e., Tanny didn’t want Hollywood showing Cro the bright lights and ladies of Broadway, i.e., one distraction in the locker room was one too many!

  274. avatar Greene23/#1 says:

before we claim a mistake lets see what the next move is … no?

Tanny has shown in his tenure to have a plan when it comes to situations like thist

  275. avatar KenEB says:

I believe Darren Sharper is still available, so if the money is right and one of the top safeties doesn’t fall to them in rounds one or two, the Jets can draft Myron Rolle or someone of similar promise, later on in the draft, even if they have to move up to the 3rd round to get him.

  276. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Im telling you something else is going down- he’s stock piling picks because he is gonna make a move on a 1st or 2nd rd tender RFA or move up in the draft

  277. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    Eddie

Been saying it for 4 days now……

    Something big is brewing

  278. avatar jkjet64 says:

I for one would like to see the jets hold on to all of their picks this year, if not trade back for more. I’ll agree they have done pretty well so far but let’s not go to the well too many times..huh?

  279. avatar john l says:

remember guy’s we are FANS we are not ” in the know” this was not a mistake it obiviously had to happen it’s not like this was taking a chance on a draft pick ( ex. vernon gholston ) this was well thought out.

  280. avatar bleedsgreen&white says:

and lets stop with the Brandon Marshall talk we don’t need him hes a diva and a locker room cancer i mean honestly where are you going to put him? Were going to throw J-Co in the slot? makes no sense any of it ugghhh-wtf!!!!

  281. avatar Jason says:

I am stunned. What an awful trade. Just awful. This is a money dump plain and simple. I know Rhodes has a bad attitude and had some bad moments last year, but talk about getting no value. In no way does this make the team better. Charge all the people the PSL fortune and then do this. Absolutely ridiculous.

  282. avatar jkjet64 says:

    I’m with you Bleedsgreen&white.

  283. avatar AKA Jack says:

    jkjet64

    You’re exaggerating. It’s 7 kids with 5 women.

All kidding aside, I really don’t care about that stuff anymore. Should I care that Tom Brady also has a kid out of wedlock when he comes to try and kick our ass twice next year? Nobody else does. He’s still a first ballot Hall of Famer. In a perfect world I want all our players to be a combination of Ward Cleaver and Dick Butkus but unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect world. In this world, I will settle for guys with good to better talent who play with heart in a system that will win. If they want to breed a Girl Scout troop in their off time, as long as it doesn’t affect their game and isn’t illegal I don’t care.

I loved Rhodes when he first got here, he played with fire and heart. He hasn’t done that in years and I disagree that he came on at the end of the year. He played ok in a system that features safeties. And he just would not Shut. His. Mouth. Twitter became more important to him than the game. As I said repeatedly last season, more hitter, less Twitter.

I wish Rhodes had made different decisions and that would have justified him being a star on this team. He wanted to go another way. Onward without him.

  284. avatar bleedsgreen&white says:

    @andrew

you think a rookie would be an upgrade? im not sure of that i mean inexperience comes into play doesnt it? as far as bethea i can see you point with him hes good but idk i was a huge Rhodes fan and it stings…at least for me.

  285. avatar Daniel says:

Anyone who thinks this is Tanny’s worst move or anything along those lines is overreacting. Rhodes was a good player. He didn’t have the dedication to football that we were hoping for and we’re confident we’ll find someone else to fit the system.

To those saying something bigger is brewing, I have to agree. Tannenbaum made this move with another one in mind.

  286. avatar jkjet64 says:

AKA Jack, I will agree on the twitter thing but he did come on in the end and it seemed from every indication he had righted the ship. I was actually looking forward to seeing him come on this year. And, i’m not a KR lover. But to add Cromartie(Big Chance) and to let Rhodes go for a fourth? I can’t get on board for that. I would of had no complaint for just a 3rd this year. to me that is a big difference then 4th this year & 7th next. r U sure it was only 5 women?? lol

  287. avatar andrew says:

yo im a rhodes fan too i have his jersey but eric berry is going to be a star like i said we could have gottten more but rhodes can be replaced

  288. avatar jkjet64 says:

Daniel. i really do think this was his worst move. We don’t have a 3rd or 4th this year and to trade Rhodes for a 4th and then use that 4th to move up somewhere? I don’t like it.

  289. avatar david harris says:

to be fair the jets drafted leon washington and brad smith in the fourth round. brandon marshall was also drafted in the 4th round. anquan boldin was drafted in hte 3rd round, so was nmandi asomogou. if anything tanny is gonna trade these picks. i feel some huge trade happening. not for brandon marshall though. im guessing we’ll be seeing lendale white and maybe a safety like bethea in green and white.

  290. avatar steve k says:

How about Boise State’s Kyle Wilson? He is extremely tough, hits, tackles well, and seems instinctive. He played CB in college but I think a move to FS is very possible for him. What do you guys think abt him?

  291. avatar reality jet fan says:

I forgot there is no questioning of the head coach after all he has been a hc for 1 year.

  292. avatar BC says:

This trade makes sense from a money perspective. The Jets want to lock up the talented core of the team – Revis, Mangold, D-Brick, Edwards, etc – and Kerry Rhodes, for what he was contributing, was overpaid. Just because there is no salary cap this year doesn’t mean you spend millions of dollars without reason – it’s not monopoly money.

  293. avatar reality jet fan says:

I cant believe people actually thinh rhodes would be a bad influence on rhodes. Thats insulting to rhodes. cro is a piece of garbage all on his own.

  294. avatar KenEB says:

I just reviewed the list of free safeties available for the Jets to sign, and Sharper is the only veteran UFA worth mentioning, in spite of the fact that he is a 13-year vet. Atogwe, RFA from the Rams, is a real talent, but I’m not sure what level of compensation he was tendered at. I’ll look into this. Point likely moot, however, as I believe the Rams will match any reasonable contract offer.

  295. avatar reality jet fan says:

I cant believe people think rhodes could be a bad influence on cro.

  296. avatar Rizzo says:

    Sign Sharper

  297. avatar jkjet64 says:

I’m a big Florida State fan. I don’t beleive, in general, the Safety has to bea speed burner. What about Myron Rolle in the 4th or 5th. The guy is young, super smart, with the right coaching, who knows. Any thoughts??

  298. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

Atogwe has no pick compensation because the Ram’s gave him a low tender. If someone signs him to an offer sheet that the Rams don’t match, no compensation is required…

“Moreover, if another team signs him, the Rams would not be due compensation because of the low tender they used. But the Rams can match any offer to Atogwe until June 1. After that they have to pay him approximately $7 million for one season or lose their right to match.”

  299. avatar JerryB says:

At least he is 2,000 miles closer to HOLLYWOOD.

  300. avatar AKA Jack says:

    jkjet64

Let’s agree on one thing. You know football. I know football. Rex and his coaches have forgotten more about football and the players on last years team in the last week than either of us will ever know. I’m pretty confident in their ability to judge talent and what will fit in their system and they clearly never warmed to Rhodes.

At first, I blamed Mangini for the fall off in Rhodes play over the last couple seasons. But he should have flourished under Ryan. He didn’t. At some point a player of his ability has to shoulder the blame of his performance and not keep blaming “the system”. Especially when he is playing for a D minded coach who loves D backs.

Hey, we can argue forever whether he was worth a 3 this year and a 4 in 2012. I think he got traded for his current worth and we will be just fine without him.

  301. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

Myron Rolle is a tackler, that’s it. Below average speed and no apparent ball skills…

  302. avatar neauone says:

Tanny is not done yet, the dust hasn’t settled. Rhodes head wasn’t into football, he played terrible the last 2 years. He came on at the end of the season, but there was a disagreement between him and management. Look for the Jets to find a suitable replacement. The Jets have a need for a pass rusher, to make the cromartie trade a smart one. No DONT PANIC, the season hasn’t started the draft isn’t here and there is more to do. A 4th round pick this year is like having a 3rd rounder.

  303. avatar rusty sanchez says:

i wish we could of got a 3rd but if you remember kerry was a 4th rounder himself…i kinda felt eric smith improved alot this year enough to be a starter tho??i guess we betta start gettin used to stupid penelties from j. diggs

  304. avatar Brad says:

steve – kyle wilson is a top cb in the draft- and he is too small to be a safety alongside of jim leonhard!

  309. avatar rusty sanchez says:

maybe we get another cornerback and switch lowery over to rhodes old spot???that might be the move right there

  310. avatar Brad says:

    Found this Interesting:

The Jets are restructuring Antonio Cromartie’s contract for the 2010 season.
Cromartie has new representation since signing his rookie deal, so you know his agents want to get something out the trade. Cromartie also has child support on his seven children through six women, which increases the need for upfront money. The Jets are taking $500K out of his $1.7M salary and turning it into a bonus.

  311. avatar DR24 says:

    @David Harris

Nnamdi Asomugha was drafted 31st overall by the Raiders in 2003, so he was a first rounder, not a 3rd rounder.

  312. avatar rusty sanchez says:

lowery tackles got good speed especially at safety good ball skills deflections but those will turn into ints at safety just dont see lowery blitzing as good as rhodes tho

  313. avatar Marvel says:

    *random thought*

have any of you guys ever seen Kerry Rhodes return a pick ? it’s sooo funny it’s like the guy has a truck strapped to his back lol ..

We will be getting a shiny new toy sooner or later .. Patience

  314. avatar rusty sanchez says:

not for nothing tanny didnt turn a 4-12 team into miss the playoffs by 1 game then afc championship team by sitting around doing nothing have a little faith

AKA Jack. If i knew football, i wouldn’t be a Jets fan. lol i love this team but they drive me crazy.38 years of this. i can’t beleive i don’t have more gray hair!!

  316. avatar Scott says:

Like most people, I’m not so thrilled about only getting a 4th and 7th for Kerry Rhodes; however, as far as drafting in the 4th round goes, Tanny has been nothing short of a genius over the past few years:

    Leon Washington
    Jericho Cotchery
    Brad Smith
    and, ironically, Kerry Rhodes

I’ll give him and Rex the benefit of the doubt on this one, as I believe they know what they want and what they’re doing.

Personally, I’m really glad that that he is off the Jets roster; good riddance!

  317. avatar Rich in Albany says:

Did you ever just watch Kerry Rhodes play? I did! A lot! And I swear he led the league in rushing over to the pile to help his teammates get up. I thought he was just plain terrible and Eric Smith was a marked improvement (not great, but just so much more involved).

  318. avatar Um says:

I can see Lowery playing some safety. He has a good eye for the ball, and he is pretty physical. In his rookie year I think he had some decent INTs, for the time he played, but he got a lot of penalties for having his hands all over receivers.

  319. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

We need Sharper! He would thrive in this system. He was amazing last year because of the NO blitzing scheme! Even at 34..sign him for 2 years 10 mill..just trade Kerrys money for him..make 5 guaranteed and with the lockout next year cut him.

  320. avatar JJets says:

cimini said jets may be looking at bethea. this is annoying having to wait to know whats up their sleeve.

Here’s what the Jets are thinking. Two of the top priorities are scoring defense and creating turnovers. Pettine never got along with Rhodes and never thought he could or would be an Ed Read type safety who could make plays that would create scores.

    I agree.

  324. avatar Brad says:

Well i believe jim leonhard can play FS or SS so we can draft best safety available- Taylor Mays?, Nate Allen, Chad Jones,Darrell Stuckey, Rashard Jones, Morgan Burnett
    CB/FS- Chris Cook, Myron Lewis
All these guys are late 1st rounders to mid 3rd rounders, (Myron Lewis might go later)

Mark my words today we are going after Eric Berry…

If we get him it was all worth it…

  326. avatar JJets says:

  327. avatar The Real RK says:

Also we need to remember, the Jets should be getting a few compensatory picks since they lost several free agents last year. Thank you Eric Mangini

  328. avatar andrew says:

forgot about that rk good point this makes this trade smarter

  329. avatar MIKE says:

    for get eric berry..

i hope the jets trade up to get Taylor Mays

If they get Taylor Mays then we can forget about rhodes

  330. avatar Rizzo says:

#1 priority is a pass rusher in the first round. i don’t want to trade up for a safety. Eric Berry is nasty, but if we were to trade up, it should be for Brandon Graham. Sign Darren Sharper for a year and draft a safety next year. 2nd rounder should be Jordan Shipley

  331. avatar tyrone says:

    dont worry be happy

  332. avatar Kevin Lane says:

any chance we can sign Nick Collins?

  333. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

Eric Berry is projected at 4, and we need depth not another trade up high and have 3 pick season. Forget Berry. Taylor Mays would be great! I would rather them trade their second rounder for Landry or go after Bethea!

  334. avatar JJets says:

taylor mays=roy williams how did that work out in dallas. monday night football against redskins twice brunell up top to santana moss.

  335. avatar Alex says:

we should have got a little bit more for him, but overall I think its a good move that will free up some real money to sign some our own free agents, extend some our key players, and if we get the opportunity to add some other free agents. Also, this does not create as large of hole as everyone thinks. I think they will try to rely on eric smith and possibly begin converting

  336. avatar Green Lantern says:

The Idea Of Eric Berry Is making everyone feel comfortable about the dumb trade that just went down.

  337. avatar Head_Coach says:

HAHA u guys miss that bum??? We gonna sign for Dawan Landry now or Bethia from Colts. trust me or we gonna trade up for Berry yesssssss

  338. avatar ron2473000 says:

No one is saying trade the whole draft for Eric Berry, but know this much Tanny isn’t going to let us go into the season without filling the need we just created.

I could see us going after Mays as well but remember this a deep draft for safety and they are plenty in the first two rounds plus remember they are RFA’s that we were sniffing around ala Antoine Bethea.

This is going to be one of greatest off seasons yet and it will define Tanny as one of the top GM’s in the NFL. The man is shaping our roster to win a championship and he will not let this trade go undone without having a solution to fill this need trust me!!!

  339. avatar JJets says:

trading up? come on! we need to add depth in key positions and be able to sign our own players.

You would have to trade the whole draft for Berry. We traded the whole draft more or less for Sanchez. We had what 3 total picks? Thats what happens when you trade from low 20′s to 4.

  342. avatar JJets says:

ron do you know that mike t drafted vernon gholston

  343. avatar brightfuture says:

Cmon i think Rhodes is great but clearly other NFL gms dont think hes that good

ron do you know that mike t drafted vernon gholston

    __
    ?????

  345. avatar ron2473000 says:

Does anyone really believe Tanny hasn’t identified a couple different options at FS for us either an RFA or in the draft.

We don’t know who they talked to at the draft if anything can TJB find out who they interviewed so we can get a better perspective and put faith back into the doubters about this trade.

I am for one know this is a precursor to either another trade or drafting a safety in the draft……

  346. avatar JJets says:

i don’t think mike t is an idiot but he did draft vernon. I am sure they identified a replacement but to think that they can hold out hope for berry is unrealistic.

  347. avatar ron2473000 says:

    dtrain and jjets,

I know he drafted VG but remember the stories by Rich Cimini of that being Mangenious pick and remember the GM must appease his coach.

I know you guys aren’t really believing we will go into the season with this need not being filled.

  348. avatar NamVetJet says:

Relax—-as others have said, let’s put our faith in Tanny and Rex. Tanny has a good record of drafting and getting players to fill needs. Rex has a talent for for finding players who fit into his system. We as fans seem to overreact to every move that is made. Think that I’ll wait till after draft and see how the team looks—and I think it is going to look just fine thanks to Mr. T and SexyRexy.

  349. avatar JJets says:

lets not get overexcited rex has been here a year! i like rex but lets not just think everything he does is great and awesome

  350. avatar KenEB says:

Before Dwight Lowery was drafted, the experts generally regarded him as a better prospect at safety than at corner. He’s a gamer, with the head and the heart to play football at a high level. He simply lacks the speed to play cornerback. Move him to free safety. The man’s a football player–let him excel.

  351. avatar rusty sanchez says:

forget about trading our whole draft for berry…having a good safety i feel is a bonus a pass rusher on the other hand is a necessity….we get a solid pass rusher on this d we can put jenkins at safety and be ok

  352. avatar BigBear says:

Please don’t forget that when you evaluate a trade, you need to consider the CONTRACT / salaries involved. With Rhodes making virtual All-Pro money, you have to consider the trade to be the pick(s) – and 4 yrs of very low salaries for that player – versus Rhodes PLUS whatever player you can sign with all the extra money in free agency (in normal years). Not sure exactly what Rhodes was going to earn, but $6-7MM seems right based on 5 yr, 34mm contract he signed (not sure of structure). So you need to evaluate the trade as a 4th and 7th plus whomever $5mm can buy in free agency or whatever else your team can do with $5mm (extend Revis, Brick, Mangold, etc)

  353. avatar JJets says:

if they change lowery to fs then we need to draft more corners or get as free agents

  354. avatar ron2473000 says:

    JJets,

You have a point if we go after Berry it will essentially take a majority of our picks but remember Tanny didn’t just do this to get rid of Rhodes.

I really believe you have to listen how Tanny talks he gives you a little insight into his strategy i.e. he stated to Cimini yesterday that unless something changes well it did today, so we have to go with the assumption that we traded Rhodes knowing we have either inquired about another FS or will draft one but we can’t do that with Rhodes on our roster because we would have left ourselves with no leverage.

  355. avatar rusty sanchez says:

my vote is for lowery to start at safety with eric snith as a backup if lowery can play well at cb with his speed he should be able to play safety with no problem plus hes not scared to tackle… older cbs who lose their speed turn to safety and prolong their careers a few more years im pretty sure rod woodson did that

  356. avatar Daniel says:

To all the Mays haters, I think he’d fit this defense with coaching. The guy cares a lot more about football than Rhodes ever will. He cared more about trying to cement his USC legacy than making more millions in the NFL. His hits are devastating. His fast as hell for his size. I’m not sure how many guys that big are as fast as he is. He obviously has the speed to cover, next he just needs to be coached up to get his coverage skills consistent.

I’d say he’s more like Sean Taylor than Roy Williams.

  357. avatar JJets says:

    Ron,
    good point.

  358. avatar jordan says:

this kind of trade isnt new for tannenbaum.
he made similar trades in the past with vilma and abraham. both were big parts of our defense and were traded for draft picks (although both trades brought back better picks i think but they were better players)

  359. avatar JJets says:

you have to trade up to get mays, so how you going to do that? its great to say that you want these guys but how do you get them? do you want to trade our draft?

  360. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

reality jet fan- no one is questioning Rex because it HIS DEFENSE. No one on this earth is perfect, but NO ONE, is a better defensive football coach than Rex Ryan…no one

  361. avatar D_PO says:

I really thought we could get more for someone like Rhodes. He is a proven safety who can add a lot to the right defense. It begs the question, who plays safety? Eric Smith, Dwight Lowery or someone like Chad Jones?

  362. avatar bleedsgreen&white says:

anybody hear anything on whats next? just got home. Are they talking to Bethea?

  363. avatar bleedsgreen&white says:

Eric Smith cannot be our starter going into next year, he hits hard and makes tackles but his coverage can be exposed. You have to bring in a talented rookie or a proven veteran.

  364. avatar JJets says:

Cimini wrote earlier on twitter about preliminary talks as Bethea.

  365. avatar JOE says:

Good riddance he is not a Rex type player. He is SOFT and has a big ego. Been saying it for years now. He won’t do anything in Arizona and he will be out of the league in 3 years

  366. avatar ron2473000 says:

    Guys,

I’m going on record this will be our year and Tanny is doing everything possible to make that happen which will allow us to go into the draft getting the best player available at 29 and beyond.

Now being realistic here if we come out of the draft without filling the FS position, as everyone stated why not Lowery at FS he makes plays and I’m pretty sure that was thought of when these decisions were made so let’s sit back and let this thing unfold.

I know for sure Tanny is definitely giving us something to talk about along with everyone else in the NFL which is good because we aren’t the only ones scratching our heads trying to figure out the next move I’m sure the other 31 teams are doing the same exact thing LOL!!!

  367. avatar bleedsgreen&white says:

Bethea is solid i was against it at first but id be ok with it now that its a done deal. I think it might be best to go after a good safety in the draft.

  368. avatar JJets says:

Man you guys are really extreme with this trade. you either think rhodes is amazing player and worth a 2nd round pick or stinks and shouldn’t be in the league

  369. avatar Steve in Philly says:

Taylor Mays looks like a huge bust! Have you seen film on him? He’s no different than Rhodes. He’s not tenacious or good against the run. Eric Smith is better, frankly.

  370. avatar ron2473000 says:

    JJets,

    Two things…

    1) what was Bethea tendered at?

    2) who can we get at TJB to find out who the Jets interviewed at the combine…very vital info right now??

  371. avatar JJets says:

I believe a second round but remember that could be what we have to give up for cromartie next year.

i am not sure about combine. i think hutch, leberfield, or cimini all beat writers for jets

  372. avatar JJets says:

question to anyone does ira from staten island know about the jetsblog

  373. avatar dakar says:

i for 1 dont think this was a good trade…i feel we ripped ourselves off big time…but as some1 stated on top…MR.T. trades our talent for cheap as he did with vilma, abraham and now kerry…i feel KR is 1 of the best safties out there…yea he played alittle soft last year but that isnt a reason to be banished…maybe he wanted out as much as the team/fans wanted him out…well arizona got themselves 1 hell of a player in kerry…now we’ll settle for some1 half as good as kerry and every1 will then say this was a very bad move…but then again rex and tanny do know what they’re doing…so lets see what the future brings…just my thoughts…

  374. avatar ron2473000 says:

    JJets,

Okay maybe we give up this year’s 2d rounder….just speculating!!

I retweeted Rich to see if can identify the draftees seen by the NYJ….I know it’s a long shot but let’s if he will do it!!!

  375. avatar Head_Coach says:

Some of u guys are CRAZY over these players. Just like TJ everybodies all whiny. We now have the money and picks to get anybody we want. We can get the Rams safety, Dawan Landry, Bethea, or get Earl Thomas from the draft. We dont need a “Allstar Safety” . We have “”Allstar Cornerbacks” Besides Kerry Rhodes would not be a good role model for Cro. He hits like my mom and we cant have that no more.

We might even get Ed Reed or Brandon Marshall so cheer up. You guys need to relax man. Tanny knows what hes doing. Everybody was sooooo sad when TJ left then were soooo happy when Cro came. Now yall are sooooo sad whe Kerry Rhodes was traded for picks that we needed. We can find another safty so go outside and smoke a cigarette. This is the whole process of the offseason. Players come and go. Godly i am glad some of you guys are not Tanny because you would be putting your emotions over the team.

This is BUISNESS its nothing personal . Look at the Cardnals at least they got somebody because they lost EVERYBODY. So another words WE WILL BE FINE!!!!!

  376. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

    Bethea is 1st round compensation…

  377. avatar Daniel says:

Steve in Philly… did you actually watch uSC, or are you going off what you’ve seen someone write?

I watched USC (I’m a Jets fan in CA) and the guy is a freak. If anything, his coverage needs more consistency, and I think he has the passion for football that will allow a guy like Rex to coach him up.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26rLxHZpiKQ

Eric Berry and Earl Thomas will go before Mays, it’s very possible we could get Mays if we wanted him. If he didn’t fall to us, we’d still only have to trade up a few picks, rather than trading the draft to move up for a guy like Berry.

  378. avatar JJets says:

    ron,

yeah i am not sure if bethea is worth a second rounder maybe we give the fourth rounder we got in this deal.

thanks, lets hope rich gets back to you.

  379. avatar ron2473000 says:

    dakar,

I understand your concern but honestly you have to admit those same players that we traded for draft picks…

Can you honestly say the team they went to….are they all pros now or even been to a pro bowl since they left NY??

    I can’t think of one….

  380. avatar cmonleon says:

im glad kerrys gone but i wish we got something to plug a whole somewhere else now. maybe hightower or bolden when he was still available. if landry only has a second round tender i think its better to use the pick on a proven starter than to take a chance on the draft like mays or something. i say we do that and trade down from the first pick and get a upper to mid second rounder and a 3rd or late 2nd

  381. avatar JJets says:

thanks for clarification for compensation. if we work out a deal it won’t be that much

  382. avatar Jake says:

They should give OJ Otagwe a 2-yr deal. Then draft MY GUY, Nate Allen, get him ready.. and he’ll start in 2 seasons.

  383. avatar JJets says:

    trading down not bad

  384. avatar JJets says:

jake are you related to nate allen

  385. avatar JOE says:

    Darren Sharper

  386. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

BTW Mays blows, athletic freak who’s only reason of being a high draft pick is the Combine and the USC hype machine.

His play on the field is not unique, just another player…

  387. avatar Jake says:

Excuse me, sorry; I meant OJ Atogwe.

  388. avatar ron2473000 says:

    cmonleon,

I don’t know if this but remember the language in this year’s draft is that whoever we draft will be part of this team at least 5-6 years because in the final year of the CBA allows us to hold on to those players longer than it would be if we just get a starter from another team.

In a long contract like that the structure should be pretty accomodating to our salary cap so I say we draft but if we can get a deal that we can’t refuse we do it then.

  389. avatar JJets says:

wow canny at the post wrote this about rhodes,
Visions of Ravens perennial Pro Bowl safety Ed Reed and the game-changing plays he made under Ryan’s defensive leadership in Baltimore danced in the heads of both Rhodes and Ryan.

Instead, Rhodes turned out to be the biggest bust outside of 2008 first-round draft pick Vernon Gholston.

  390. avatar Jake says:

    Nope, I’m not JJets. Lol.

And I’m not a USF Alumni either, or in love with the guy.. just have tremendous respect for him.

I’m a Rutgers football fan, and attend as many games as I possibly can, I watch College Football whenever it’s on..

I’ve seen about 6 or 7 USF games this year and was REALLY impressed with this guy. He’s tall, 6’1” 207 and he’s a FS. Exactly what we need. He has a good work ethic (so I’ve heard) , he has good hands and is a great leader. He ALWAYS trys to make his technique the best it can be.. (which is good, because it’s already really good. ) and has pretty decent speed. Just seems to me, like a guy Rex would love.. and a guy I’d love to see have success.

  391. avatar TJBfan (twitter @infresco4) says:

Ok after reflecting upon this here is my take.

Many people feel this trade “created” a need. Why would Tanny create a need a day after putting the Jets in a position to draft BPA?

It isn’t to move up and draft Mays or Berry, I’ll tell you that much. We pick so late in the first round that you don’t give away a piece of your lineup with bets on moving up to grab an unknown.

Once the aftermath comes through we’ll realize what the plan was. However the two most likely are the cap space it creates (after this year of course), and that there is a 2nd part to this trade that just needs to be finalized.

  392. avatar JJets says:

    jake,

    thank lol

i remember that rhodes was a 4th round pick back in 2005. i think the safetys in first round can be overrated. this guy sounds good what do you think about lowery at safety?

  393. avatar JJets says:

    just fyi

wfan reporting giants going to bring in jeff garcia for back up

any ideas of a good jets back up?

  394. avatar Daniel says:

    Gulfbreeze,

Mays’ play on the field is definitely unique. Someone who is that fast and hits that hard is rare. He actually does play the run well. His coverage can be inconsistent. With coaching, the guy can be very special.

I like how last year, everybody agreed he was a top 10 pick. Now nobody wants a piece of him. Keep in mind he even played at less than 100% with an injured knee in that play of him chasing down Jahvid Best (4.35 speed) that I posted previously.

I do think he’s a boom-or-bust, but I’m not opposed to us taking him. What was our big knock on Rhodes? He is SOFT and doesn’t like to hit anyone. If you’ve watched Taylor Mays at all, you’d see his mentality fits ours. He’s aggressive, and he will hit the living **** out of you.

  395. avatar Jake says:

    JJets,

I’m not quite sure.. Lowery is tall, 6’1”. But he is undersized, he’d needs to add about 10 more pounds of bulk. He is currently listed as 198 pounds. Coming out of the draft, some scouting reports had him listed as THE BEST corner in the draft.. they said that he lacked explosiveness wasn’t great in Man-to-Man, but he EXCELLED in zone coverage. He has decent speed, good size, good hands, natural abilities with field awarness. I think he’d be a decent safety IF he added some weight.

But I think that Tannenbaum has something up his sleeve, so I don’t think Lowery will get the chance.

  396. avatar trevor says:

could be a smart move for the jets

lowery could fill the need at S
a draft pick could potentially fill the need

depth will play a roll with solid developing players like james ihedigo and eric smith

potential 5 players who could step in and be a dominant starter at the S position opposite leonhard

  397. avatar cmonleon says:

its funny how he wanted to be an actor and he was in the perfect spot to do it while he played in NY for a contender for the superbowl but instead played so bad that now hes gonna have to find an acting job in the desert lol while he plays for a team thats falling apart

  398. avatar JJets says:

  402. avatar JJets says:

    cmeonleon,
i agree. trade down if nothing we want is there

  403. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

    Daniel,

Hard hitting safeties are a dime a dozen, Mays just has speed to spare. Safeties isn’t a position where high class speed is a needed.

He’s a project, I hate projects. Gholston was a project, thus, I hate Gholston(the player, not person).

Why waste time on him when there are plenty of players that can start immediately?

Aggressive mentality doesn’t mean much anymore. Heck, Gholston tries to dominate when he’s in, but he’s yet to do anything but siphon money from Woody Johnson’s pocket…

  404. avatar Dylan says:

Mays would not be a terrible fit in this system. He is big for a safety (6’3), very fast (4.34 unofficial speed & 4.43 official), and he hits like a truck. He isn’t great in coverage, but he definitely has the ability to learn. I don’t know why people on here think that Mays is soft. He has a little bit of cocky attitude, but Rex loves that kind of personality. Watch this video and tell then tell me that he is afraid to lay a guy out.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWroHILuG-I

  405. avatar Dylan says:

Taylor Mays is actually the complete opposite of Kerry Rhodes. They don;t have anything in common. Mays is a hard hitter and isn’t great in coverage. Rhodes is great in coverage but doesn’t hit hard.

  406. avatar JJets says:

    just read this guys.

The New York Jets are restructuring the remaining year on Antonio Cromartie’s deal to provide some upfront money for him, according to a league source.

Cromartie, who the Jets acquired in a trade with the San Diego Chargers on Thursday, has one year left on his current contract and has been dealing with some off-field and financial issues, including owing back payments to a former agent.

The Jets are converting part of Cromartie’s $1.7 million salary for 2010 into a bonus (roughly $500,000), which he would receive now, rather than waiting until September, when players begin to receive their game checks.

    per nfl.com

  407. avatar JJets says:

i am glad they are working with him on this and hopefully we don’t keep getting people slamming him for previous mistakes

  408. avatar Daniel says:

    Gulfbreeze,

I think Mays is ready to step in from day one more so than Gholston. Mays has at least been a dominating presence in college and has had people raving about him for the past couple of years.

Gholston was a pure pass-rush specialist at Ohio State where he played DE. Nobody really considered him an elite prospect, certainly not top 10. It was after his workout that the hype started, and we were dumb enough to be baited into it.

Making the transition from 4-3 DE to 3-4 OLB is much tougher than transitioning FS skills from college to the pros. Mays might be a little bit of a project, but he’s way more ready to play than Gholston (Gholston needed so much development he didn’t even start, whereas Mays would get his chance from day one).

I agree we should try to sign a veteran FS like Sharper/Atogwe/Bethea first, and draft a pass rusher in the draft, but what’s so bad about doing it vice versa? Maybe Tanny gets creative and somehow lands a solid pass-rusher. Adalius Thomas is a popular rumor. Maybe you sign the pass-rusher first, since that will help out the secondary, especially a young Taylor Mays.

  409. avatar dakar says:

    ron…

im not concerned…im just saying we traded him for cheap…his talent is alot better than most would like to admit…and yes vilma and abraham both went to the probowl…

i also said that REX and TANNY both know what they’re doing…so im not concerned…at all…and this does nothing but make another position to be filled…when every1 already knew he was gonna rededicate himself to his position…just my thoughts…

  410. avatar jvsvn says:

I’m with head_coach. Everybody needs to relax. Make no mistake, this was a Rex decision. How could anyone be surprised by this move. Rhodes got benched last season. Remember that. For whatever reason, Rex didn’t like Rhodes as his starting safety. Remember one other thing. Bart Scott, Marques Douglas, and Jim Leonard were originally undrafted free agents. Rex has a great track record of finding the guys he wants and needs to make his system work. I think he knows what he is doing. He has certainly earned the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise.

  417. avatar GreenGoblin says:

Anybody on this board who justifies this trade is delusional because Tannenbaum should have gotten a third-rounder at minimum for a former pro-bowl player who was considered a top 5 safety in the NFL just a couple of seasons ago, who is still very young, and played very well over the last quarter of the season…Tannenbaum doesn’t even have the salary cap excuse…Could Woody Johnson be getting cheap and is trying to save money because look at what the Jets did with Thomas Jones…..All Jones would have cost them was 3 million for next year if they tendered him so he would not have affected the salary cap at all and they’re risking their season going in it with Shonne Greene and Leon Washington because both are injury prone and unproven as the main back…

  418. avatar dakar says:

    he’s busy packing his bags…

  419. avatar TOON2388 says:

if Organization felt that Rhodes cannot produce what they expect at this position, does it matter what we got in return? So we should keep him because WE think he is worth a 3 or more? Rex was expecting Rhodes to be like Ed Reed and he was not. And now with Cromartie as a starter, and his reputation as not being a physical player, can we afford to have 2 guys in the secondary who are not physical? Rhodes was great in 2006, not as good in 2007, and subpar the last 2 years – time to move on

  420. avatar Marvel says:

    dakar…

When a grow man making 5mill has to “rededicate” you might wanna trade him..He’s soft we can do better..or at worse we do the same ,meh I’m more concerned bout DE.. Tanny has many tricks left

  421. avatar Marvel says:

    ^grown

  422. avatar TOON2388 says:

I also like the long-term approach Tanny is taking – he is freeing up $ for the future when Brick, Mangold, Harris, Revis all need new deals in 1-3 years

  423. The understatement of the year award goes to me… when I say that I was not a Rhodes fan this season. I totally snapped and called him a cancer.

That said, I did listen to reason when it was explained to me that although Rhodes had been tackling like Betty White and missed out on a “Voo Doo Doll’s” worth of turnovers, he was statistically a Top 5 safety. Moverover, I was more encouraged by the personal growth that I saw since his stupid tweets.

Now, I’m not only surprised he was trade, but really shocked by how little we got for him.

We got Antonio Cromartie for a #3; and I would not trade Rhodes for him. Rhodes is worth way more than that?!

How bout our entire 2010 draft picks for Eric Berry. Or, trade up to get Taylor Mays?

We just gave ourselves another hole at saftey and have no way to solve pass rusher. Gholston?

  424. avatar matt says:

can we even sign sharper? i wanted to give kerry one more year and try and get a pass rusher or slot wr in draft now safety is our biggest concern we would have to trade up for mays

  425. avatar dakar says:

    marval

im not shedding any tears over him…and that rededicating himself was being thrown around about him from tanny and rex…everything was A-OKAY…

NOW HE GOT TRADED…as dean barbella said…its not that he got traded…but it was for the amount he was traded for…

1 more thing…it seems that all you guys fail to read the part where i say…

REX and TANNY know what they’re doing…

so im good with it…im just suprised by how much this guy is suddenly hated by all of you…just my thoughts…

  426. avatar TOON2388 says:

We got a CB and now need a Safety and we have an extra 4th round pick this draft. I am hoping that we trade the 29th pick to move DOWN and get more picks – we need depth, especially at RT LG and DE as those positions are occupied by starters who have 2-3 yeras left, maybe, playing at their current level.

  427. Isnt Arizona closer to hollywood oops just sayin seriously GOOD RIDDENS

  428. avatar Marvel says:

    dakar

I get what your saying and I agree that Rex and Tanny have big plans ahead so why worry..

For the people upset with the 4th & the 7th rounder we recieved, I’m posative Tanny would have traded him for a 1st rounder if he could. But obviously he got all that he could . It’s not as if he was running around turning down 3rd round offers or something .. Sheeesh evry body wanted the guy gone mid-season because he’s soft & his nickname is “HollyWood”(not by choice) now he’s gone .. Can’t satisfy some people.

Fair value, he is a soft player that takes off plays and even games, and before trashing a 4th rounder I ask what round was Rhodes drafted in … the 4th round.

This is not a case that we need to run out and get a safety in round 1, Mike T has a plan and maybe it is a safety in round 1, maybe later, and we go slot receiver in round 1 or maybe a DE/LB is in play then, I’m willing to wait and see because Rhodes was too soft and disappeared in way too many games.

  430. avatar Doug says:

WHAT WHAT WHAT???? a 4th and 7th rounder? Are we kidding here? I’m speechless.

  431. avatar Pdubbs82 says:

I don’t think this is all the terrible.

Does anyone else think maybe Kerry opened his mouth about other recent moves and punched his ticket off the team ??

  432. avatar Jcjets says:

I understand that maybe a 4th and 7th next year is all Mr. T could get for him right now but I’d say then don’t trade him for that value. They made this trade because of the 2mil roster bonus due next week. Other teams know that and it effected what we got back.

  433. avatar Head_Coach says:

we are NOT drafting a safety. At least not in the early rounds. We will get a vet thru FA. Plain and simp. There are plenty better and cheaper then Mr . Arizonia . Oops Mr Hollywood. Look on the brightside people. At least Kerry can start his acting career. He is 100 miles from CALI. Kerry tell Wesley Snipes and Will Smith i said hello.

  434. avatar mike s. says:

    This deal is completely ridiculous!

Ask yourself this: would you trade 2 million to convert this late 4th round pick into a late 3rd round pick?

It seems the NY Jets were pressured into making the deal now to avoid paying a 2 million bonus to Rhodes.
A late 4th rounder, even with a throw away 2011 7th round pick seems extremely cheap. A late 3rd or a late 4th plus a 5th might seems much closer to fair value.
This kid doesn’t fit into Rex’s system – we know it and the league knows it. But this kid is young, athletic, and probably has several good years left if he settles into a system that uses his talents properly.
    Let’s remember, this kid is a 6’3″ 220 lbs safety with a 42″ Vertical, 4.56 40 time, 4.17 20 yard shuttle, and 6.94 3-cone.
This kid is an NFL athlete and has proven himself as a starter since stepping on the field as a rookie in 2005!
He may have a high salary… but this is not some un-proven rookie that you are drafting and hoping his skills translate from the college level to the pro grame. This kid can play with the big boys.

I thought this organization had turned the corner and move away from the Penny-wise, Pound-foolish mentality.
I understand not paying an aging RB that looked very bad at the end of the season. But this…? Giving up Rhodes for less than fair value b/c you want to save 2 million… come on! Tell Woody to sell a few more bottles of that over priced baby shampoo so the front office can play a little poker with the league, rather than bending over and getting screwed!

  435. avatar Head_Coach says:

on second thought… i shoulda got Kerrys autograph. It will be worth Millions once the Home Box Office sales hit

  436. avatar Doug says:

Now that I’ve calmed down. It’s still a bad trade. We Let our big talent go way undervalued. Vilma is an all-star MLB on the Saints and now Rhodes is gone for pennies.

Anyway, I’ve finally started to look at some of our players’ twitter accounts…All Twitter is is a place for the NY Jets players to announce to the world what they’re eating.

  437. avatar rich k says:

hey jake terrible pick if we take him i will be furious… your number 1 weakness was that he cant play man to man coverage and bump and run? well there you go just because of that right there we can under no circumstance take him. end of story clowns

  438. avatar rich k says:

this story came out 3 days ago.. the original deal was rhodes for boldin straight up. then if boldin got dealt before that it would be rhodes for a 3rd rounder straight up. i dont know why 3 days later kerry dropped from a 3rd rounder to a 4th and 7th.n 7th is literally nothing did they throw that 7th in there to mock us?

  439. avatar rich k says:

no shot in hell we take taylor M in the draft if we do that itn will be a awful pick. we have more pressing needs. like WR or BRANDON GRAHAM. literally only thing i can think of is that tanny is getting alot of picks together to trade up maybe for a dez bryant

  440. avatar rich k says:

um i have a solution…. how about we get ryan clark.? proven winner and great player i think he would be a perfect fit. then we can go back to the draft and have a BPA scenario for the majority of the draft

  441. avatar BigBadBob says:

I don’t get this at all, tanny is suspect. WTF Jefs?

  442. avatar BigBadBob says:

    Ha ha, “Jefs”, WTF?

  443. avatar JayM says:

Good I am glad Rhodes is gone all you have to do is watch the championship game against the Colts and you will see why he was traded.

Watch the Collie TD at 4:39 and the Dallas Clark TD at 6:35. As you will see Rhodes was lost on the Collie TD and he gave Clark way too much room on his TD.

    The truth hurts

  444. avatar sunsetmusic says:

Not to happy that a 4th/7th was all we could muster but Tanny is a great GM …..do you honestly think he didn’t try for more??? The question is whether he should have been traded at all? If you believe so then, this is what the market bore….

I am fine with it, I hated the comments/reaction he gave after being asked if he wanted to be a jet after the season ended and I KNOW…Rex and Tanny will have a solid safety in place come OTAS …probably within this week to be honest IMO….

Either wayREX will have the number 1 defense again when its all said and done….

  445. avatar bungi says:

You guys forget how pathetic rhodes was for most part of last season. Yea he came on at the end, but he was embarrassing most of season. He got ran over and he blatantly dodged tackles. Rhodes hasn’t been good in three years I’m sorry. Anyone who is afraid to hit someone that plays safety, and there is no disputing that, does not deserve to be on this defense. I think Rex has a better feel than all of us and this was his call without a doubt.

  446. avatar K-Man says:

Kerry Rhodes became a nice to have in 2010 about 12 games into 2009 as he had barely shown up.

At the end of the day, we didn’t win the championship with him, we can not win it without him. let’s see how much his acting career works for him in Arizona.

I wish him well and I did really like him at one point. But 2009 left a bad taste with me and it should with all of you considering his tweets and comments.. he is not about the team, he is about himself. the fact we only received a 4th and 7th in 2011 shows that the rest of the league was on to him as well.

did he have skills? yes. was he a nasty defender? no. he was good, but replaceable… and if not now, then when?

I ask all of you this questions – how often next season do you see yourself saying – “oh man, Kerry rhodes would’ve made that play.. I we still had him!”

my guess – not much because he didn’t make many plays in 2009.

    thoughts?

  447. avatar TOON2388 says:

Tanny is suspect? Is team better now or was it better when Tanny took over as GM in Jan 2006?

I have neither the time nor the inclination to research this, but I would lay my $ down that all the posters who think we got ripped off, were some of the same people who callec for Rhodes’ head at some point in 2009.

this short attention span theater crap must stop – go post on espn or bleacher report with this garbage

  448. avatar Daniel says:

I still don’t get all the hate for Taylor Mays. EVERYONE is saying how you can’t be afraid to hit someone on this D and Mays WELCOMES hits. I watched him at USC, and I think he’ll be tremendous. He’s 22-years-old. Athletically, he’s an extremely rare specimen, and to those who say the same about Gholston, the guy wasn’t that big of a deal in college and only got hype after workouts. Mays has hype because of his on-the-field production.

Coach up his coverage skills a bit, and you have potential for a great player. He’d definitely be better than Rhodes at some point. This kid cares for the game waaay more than Rhodes ever will. Hopefully for Kerry, this wake-up call will help him get back on track.

I can see if you don’t want to trade up for Mays, but should he fall to #29 (being that many teams value Berry/Thomas ahead of him), I wouldn’t be opposed to taking him at all.

  449. avatar TOON2388 says:

Who cares about Mays? if the Leftist players union wants sports to be treated like all other businesses thaen new hires should get the lowest salaries until they prove themselves.

I am fine with no season in 2011 – I swore off the NBA in 1997 when the Knicks got screwed on time too many and we will all be fine w/o football – let the owners and players do something else to earn a living – I think the owners are in better shape because unlike people like Cromartie they can pass the written portion of the DMV test!

  450. avatar david i says:

We have the his replacement…Lowery. Lowery may not have been a “good cover corner”, but he didn’t make mental mistakes in this D. KR did. Lowery, like Rolle, will make the move from corner to Safety and an be a good cover safety. With ES around to come up an play in the box when we need it, this spot is set.

Also, getting a fourth in this years draft is like getting a 3 that everyone is whining about, because the draft is deep…real deep.

Plus, now we have more money to spend on contracts for Revis and Mangold that I bet Mr. T wants done before camp.

This is a solid deal. This is addition by subtraction.

  451. avatar WTF is Tanny doing says:

I mean, Rhodes was in the doghouse, but still, that’s all the value he had? I guess he couldn’t have 2 secondary players who can’t tackle on one side. First a 3rd for a POS corner, now getting a 4th for Rhodes… smh…

  452. avatar john l says:

boldin went for a 4th and 5th so this trade is not that bad.

  453. avatar AKA....Drew says:

After a night of thinking about it I have this take:

I trust Tanny and even more so Rex (whos call it was to trade Rhodes) to have this team ready next year.

I dont love the value ( I figured a 3rd but feared a 4th when I heard the trade) but in a deep draft class a 4th isnt so bad.

Rhodes was never going to be the player we saw in 2006 and 2007. Its not the same system and even though I thought it was over blown….Its kind of hard to defend a player that cant get along with Rex and this defensive staff

I do think Mr T has something else brewing in the works. Either another trade or a RFA signed to an offer sheet coming.

This is the type of trade (similar to the Sanchez deal) that I needed a full day to think about before warming up to it.

I think Arizona got better (Rhodes is cheaper and just as good if not better than Rolle) and Rhodes “should” play better there.

The end result is Rex understands his defense and for whatever reason (probably his attitiude) Rhodes didnt work out.

Is Sharper coming? Are we signing Landry to a offer? Are we working a trade for Marshall? Are we getting chips to gether to get Thomas or Berry in April? I am not sure but I know that E Smith will not be our starter on Opening day.

This is not the SOJ and Mr T and Rex will prove it again this year

  454. avatar mdGordon says:

Finally!! Rhodes is awful and has been for years. Don’t care what we got in return, as long as this guy is gone. Now we can concentrate on getting a real safety that is willing to tackle.

  455. avatar sexy rexy says:

gilbril wilson or ryan clark would be just fine in that spot IMO.

  456. avatar Tos9987 says:

Well I been saying it all along rhodes is going , I never really liked the idea but figured it was going to happen .

I am not happy with the compensation we got ,definetly could have gotten a 3rd I think .

I am now expecting a small draft class this year again. I think they do what the need to do to get Berry now , I think he would have to fall past 3 overall then the jets will make a move leaving us with little left . I bet the save the 2nd rounder to pick up a pass rusher . We will have next to no pics after they trade up for Berry .
I forse another 3 person draft . Lock it up

Dont you think with all the talk of Berry being the next coming of Reed that rex would seel the house for this guy .

  457. avatar mole57 says:

    Daniel wrote:

    “mole57, Sharper is 100% available.

You people don’t pay attention! The UFA rules don’t apply to everyone! Other final 4 teams’ free agents are available to us.”

That was proven to be a false interpretation of the rules. Perhaps if you’d been paying attention you would have known this.

  458. avatar Tos9987 says:

I like lowery as a saftey I think that will work . I am a fan of him he has a lot of good qualities . He just gets burned too much man to man .

Landry would be worth the 2nd and we can get our pass rusher with the first . Maybe trade up to get Graham

  459. avatar Tim in SJ says:

I would have liked a better return for Rhodes. He was a headcase and seemed to be as concerned with acting as football. He was a good player and a good Jet. However, this frees up $ for a future move. I wouldn’t mind them drafting Taylor Mays, FS from USC. The dude is a freak. Lightning fast. He is a little unpolished but I think Rex can fix that. He could be a bigger, better, cheaper option. I think this move was inevitable.

  460. avatar sth11 says:

Its fine by me if Rex wants to unload Rhodes. He clearly did not tow the party line in the locker room and did not fit into Rex’s system so well.

That being said, is there anyone here who thinks that Cromartie is worth more in a trade than Rhodes? They’re basically the same player at different positions.
It’s not like the Chargers had a much better bargaining position in that trade than we had in this one.

Sometimes you have good players you can’t keep (sometimes great, i.e. Vilma. But don’t forget he was also injured the year before he was traded which affected his value). But being as this is a business, Tanny has to make sure that he doesn’t undervalue his own assets. You can’t monetarily evaluate a trade like this adequately because it only works in your favor when you receive near EQUAL production on the field.

Even as bad as Kerry played this year, it was generally agreed upon (on this blog) that he was playing well enough to start but was not playing up to his POTENTIAL (the causes of which are the real reason we are trading him). If you look at the trade like this, it’s hard to give it a positive evaluation. They can’t justify it by saying they weren’t gonna give him a $2 mill. roster bonus in an uncapped year. If its true that his contract was structured such that he could only be traded in an uncapped year (as I read in a few comments above), then that would explain alot.

I’m going to give Tanny the benefit of the doubt, though. My hunch is that he already has a plan in place to swing another trade which will include that 4th rounder. If he’s able to equitably replace Rhodes’ production (even at another position), then, in terms of the grand scheme of things, the value of the picks we get is meaningless.

But, for those of you who say “we can just draft a S… or get a FA…”… yes its true that its POSSIBLE to replace Rhodes. But you still have to get one and that person has to have EQUAL or BETTER production (in relation to their contract value), which is one thing said and another thing done. At least we knew we had a serviceable safety.

  461. avatar ramble914 says:

This move was all about sending a message! And the fact that they traded him for slightly below value, sends it even bigger.

They just told the team we don’t care who you are, if you play here, you play hard all the time, and you put the team first.

End of story, let’s move on, we have a SB to win!

  462. avatar James in TN says:

Rex said, “Kerrry we are throwing your twitter in the S@#tter”. Adios.

Kerry, it’s a dry heat and I think your agent can land you a role as an extra in a Lifetime Original movie.

I love the move and hopefully we get VG out next.

  463. avatar Marc says:

I thought this would happen, but I was hoping for a better deal. The same deal with a worse team would have at least given a better return. Oh well, wondering how we get a pass rusher.

  464. avatar the NYC Parking Expert says:

    Not enough value, period.

I trust Tanny and Rex; I hope something else is brewing to help ease the pain.

  465. avatar Dknyj says:

This is a GARBAGE Trade! 4th and a 7th? We gave up more for freaking LITO?! This is a panic move – unless this opens us up to sign a free agent of equal or lesser value? Ugh. This makes me sick to my stomach – A fourth and a 7th? really? from the cardinals?

  466. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

GUYS-DONT JUMP OFF THE GW BRIDGE!!!!!

1- Rex made this call. He knows what he needs, and how important certain guys are to his defense. Obviously, no one on this blog has any right to tell that man how to run his defense. He is the best in the world at coaching defense.

2- The addition of Antonio Cromartie and having Jimmy Leonhard around gives the Jets so much more flexibility. Kerry was good at not giving up big plays, but he wasnt making those Ed Reed super big plays on the ball, the pick six’s etc. His salary and production didnt warrant what he did on the field. Basically, he was being paid like Ed Reed to simply not get beat deep. Jimmy L is going to surprise alot of you guys. He spelled Ed Reed when he got hurt, and the Ravens defense might not have made those big plays, but the unit itself did not skip a beat.

3- This move itself is not the end. Mr T has a plan in the works right now. It would be so anti- Tannebaum to create a hole and do NOTHING to fill it. No way someone is not brought in here as at least a a competent player,( i.e don’t give up the big play

Kerry was one of my favorite when he came up through our organization. But once he got paid, his play dropped, and all kinds of off the field issues popped up. Whatever it is, Kerry simply became non vital to our defense’s success

  467. avatar cojetfan says:

Im not that sad to see him go. The one thing as a fan I can’t tolerate is low effort. I saw KR go in the tank this year and wasn’t trying before he got benched. I was done with him then.
The M. Lynch non-tackle was the last straw for me.

Thought we’d see higher compensation in a trade, but I can live w it.

  468. avatar dmazz says:

I’m pretty excited about this move. If there was one player I thought we can afford to move it was Rhodes. Rex and Tanny will make sure that position gets filled appropriately

“Watch the Collie TD at 4:39 and the Dallas Clark TD at 6:35. As you will see Rhodes was lost on the Collie TD and he gave Clark way too much room on his TD.”

Watched it. I saw Eric Smith let his man run right by him and score and James Ihedigbo bite on a playfake and hesitate in no-man’s land, leaving his man wide open.

Luckily I don’t think either will be the starting safety for the Jets next year.

  471. avatar brian311 says:

i also have taken some time to digest this trade. i am disappointed in the value we received. a 4th rounder, deep draft or not, is too little for a player of rhode’s ability. i dont see us getting an impact player towards the bottom of the 4th round, and i also dont believe this trade was to pick up chips for a later move. a 4th rounder just isnt enough

  472. Brian311—they got what they could get. Do you think that they turned down a better offer? Everyone knew that Rhodes was not a Rex guy.

I agree with Bent that Rhodes’s replacement for next year is likely not on the roster today.

  473. avatar jvsvn says:

There’s another way to look at it. If Rhodes is only worth a 4, then what’s the value of any guy we might trade for to replace him? We just got Cromartie for a conditional 3 that might become a 2. CB is a much more valuable position than S. My only surprise is that this wasn’t at least a conditional 4th or 3rd rounder based on Rhodes performance. I bet you that is what Tanny proposed. Arizona balked at the conditional stuff and threw in next year’s 7th instead. Obviously, this is not a great deal, but it’s not that bad either. Players never get traded for their actual value. Rex didn’t want the guy, period. what else can you do. Get the best deal you can and move on. It’s a long way until the season starts. A lot of other things are going to happen and we’ll be fine. The success of the 2010 Jets did not depend on Kerry Rhodes playing safety.

  474. avatar chrisphillyjetsfan says:

good deal. jets are setting up another move, and in the meantime got another pick in deeeep draft class. sharper is looming, tanny is not putting together a possible contender, he will make them a CONTENDER by september.

  475. avatar WW85 says:

4th rounder? Are you kidding me? I like Tanny but I cant see this at all. Good safeties are rare.

I can only imagine the Jets thought the offers would worsen as the draft approached.

  476. avatar jets17 says:

i NEVER called for Rhodes to be delt away. I have backed him up thinking he wud snap out of it and that wed give him another shot. We could have gotten more for thim.. this deal does not make sense unless we have a plan to make a move for Eric Berry or talk Ed Reed out of retirement. I tink it was a dumb move. Rhodes can be a top 5 sefety but i guess we didnt want to give him his bonus and salary.

At the end of the day… well get past it.

  477. avatar James in TN says:

I bet Rhodes loafs in Arizona just like he loafed here. Last one to the pile.

  478. avatar Mitch Berger is a Bad Punter says:

They should package all their draft picks, trade their promising rookies, shed some salaries and go after Lebron James.

Oh wait this is the Knicks plan… nevermind.

  479. avatar NJ loves the Jets says:

Amazed that they did this but u have to think that there is a plan in the works to fill Rhodes spot. I like Rhodes tho he had a sub par season he was pretty good on coverage not the best tackler but his size allowed us to put him on those big tight ends during the season, which was key to our blitz package.

The only safety I would like here is Berry!..we don’t need a BIG HIT guy! Who can’t find the ball…we never had a BIG HIT guy and we did pretty damn well on defense in 2009.

  480. avatar Chris says:

I’m not surprised at the 4th rounder. Would have preferred a 3, BUT this is what the free market said he is worth. Outside of NY, NOT a superstar. Rex knows what he is doing — just look at the result in 1 season.

  481. avatar Brendan says:

I just pulled myself out of a gutter from Hoboken’s St. Paddy’s Parade to weigh in on this. If the plan is go trade up to get Eric Berry, fine. Maybe even Earl Thomas. But the fact is the Jets traded one of the elite cover safeties in football. I don’t care that he didn’t deal out crushing hits. He was like a giants safety net out there. His range is second to none and that’s going to be hard to replace. Berry has Ed Reed potential. He would be the toy Rex desperately wants & now needs. But now we’re looking at a situation where we can still be left this offseason without a pass rusher. As I said when all these rumors began, creating another hole for a couple of mid-round picks (which is what I thought they would get, not a mid round and last round, making this worse) isn’t wise. Now the Jets entire scheme from last year is in jeopardy. I hope Rex knows what he’s doing.
