Prospect Watch: S Eric Berry

by Weeks on March 7th, 2010 at 10:10 am

As the Jets journey towards the draft in April, we here at TJB will be taking a look into prospects that could be on the Jets draft board. Today we will be taking a look at: Tennessee product, Eric Berry

Projected Round: First

Mesurables: Stands at 5’11. Weighs in at 211 lbs.

Positives: Berry is very quick and agile and has no issue keeping up with the speedy receivers. He has good, sure hands that can keep the ball secure. Berry has great instincts and is rarely fooled on fakes or trick plays. He can keep his body under control and can often get his hands ready to break up the pass despite his lack of ability to leap. Berry is good either in man to man or in the zone. He has a good back pedal and great speed. He can be used to help in run support and he can also tackle fairly well. Berry has a positive attitude and is not afraid to throw himself around.

Negatives: Berry lacks ideal strength and in order to become a better tackler and become better with his run support he needs to bulk up. He can be overly aggressive at times.

The Bottom Line: I have learned to never underestimate ”Trader” Mike Tannenbaum (see Favre, Rhodes, etc.) and while I’m sure the Jets will want to keep most of their picks considering the depth of this draft, it would not surprise me to see the FO to lobby for Berry on draft day. That being said, it seems unlikely that Berry ends up in Green and White by the end of Day 1 but I certainly wouldn’t put it past Tanny to either call up some teams or find a way to make it so.

If we do trade up for Eric Berry The Next Ed Reed you already know who lobbied for him hard.
I wouldn’t even be mad if we traded up and got Eric Berry using some picks.
Especially if we sign Joey Porter or Adalius Thomas..

  2. avatar Dylan says:

How could we trade for Berry? I don’t think a 1st, 2nd, and 4th would be enough. We would probably need to trade our 2010 1st, our 2011 first, and another high pick.

  3. avatar Dylan says:

Lol or we could take a page out of Mike Ditka’s book and trade our 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th.

  4. avatar ronnie131 says:

We need to move up all the way to #4 to get him….the 2 DT’s will go in the top 3 and 1 QB.
Using the points system, we have to give up two 1′s, one two and 1 more mid rounder.

Not worth it….+ imagine the salary hes going to demand/get.

  5. avatar ramble914 says:

Ain’t happening!! Berry is a Top 5 pick.

As Dylan said, we’d have to mortgage this years top picks and next years.

  6. avatar E. Weeks says:

Well ronnie the Jets just did get rid of some big salaries …. I’ll leave the interpretation of that up to the rest of you guys.

  7. avatar jetsfan101 says:

I think they eithier want Berry or Sharper. Reed was a big part of Rex’s defenses in Baltimore and both of these guys are similiar. Sharper is a great ballhawk not the greatest cover guy but we need a ballhawk because we just didn’t get alot of turnovers last year on defense. Berry is in mind no doubt Ed Reed 10 years younger. I think they should sign Thomas trade up for Berry and get a late round slot receiver.

  8. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    LOL Dylan-Ditka

This kid is the truth, athletic, tough, smart, just the total package…too bad the 53 man roster would suffer because of what we’d have to give up to get him

He’s gonna be a monster though in the NFL and whoever drafts is getting a future All Pro

  9. avatar Green Lantern says:

Hmm E.Weeks does have a point.

  10. avatar Rhodes is SOFT says:

This guy looks like a flat out stud that would be perfect for the Jets defensive scheme. Berry can do it all.

  11. avatar J-Kay says:

This kid is the best thing since Ed Reed. I doubt we can move up for him, but he is amazing

  12. avatar Tos9987 says:

I saw something saying that these teams with the high pics are trying to trade down they may be willing to part with less then you guys think .

I would like it to be a 1 and 3rd and some expendable players . Maybe a 1 and 2 then get back there 3 or 4 .

We definetly need to address the pass rush i would like it to be with the 2nd pick if we get berry .

IMO they need to trade down and get more pics to address the OL DL and pass rush and slot . if they trade down they can address every depth issue .

But to me the way tanny works , Ill put the bank on trading up and gettind 3 guys they really like .

Moving down makes more sence when the cap comes back cause how are we going to lock up our core and pay all these guys . we will have like 10 top 10 pics on the team . Half looking for astronomical extentions and the other half with rediculous rookie salaries

  13. avatar jetsfan101 says:

    tos9987,
Teams are definetly trying to trade back. In my opinion a 2010 1st round pick, 2010 4th round pick, a 2011 first round pick and a player would be enough. I might do it because Berry is a monster and the 2011 draft isn’t going to be the best draft. Plus we would still have a second round pick to draft a Jordan Shipley or a pass rusher.

  14. avatar ronnie says:

If we can get a pass rusher via free agency, I dont mind us trading all our picks + Brian Thomas to get Eric Berry

  15. avatar Tos9987 says:

I guess your right about the 2011 draft being weak but iam not carzy about giving up 2 1st rounders for him .

But you make a good point who cares if we give up 2011 32 overall on a weak draft LOL Could be worth a shot and ay off big if we address the rest of the issues this year

  16. avatar jetsfan101 says:

If we could get a player like Porter or Thomas we would still probably need a late round pass rusher because both Porter/Thomas and Pace are old plus we still probably need OL CB and DL depth late in the draft. So i wouldn’t quite give up the whole draft.

  17. avatar AKA....Drew says:

The most sure fire prospect in the draft. At his worse he will be a top level starter int he draft

Almost zero flaws in his game.

  18. avatar glocknsoul says:

This is a luxury we can’t afford. We can’t trade up and reduce the # of picks we have each year – that will lead to a supreme deficiency in depth, and in this league of gladiators, depth is what gets you through 16 games. We don’t need all-stars at every DB position. Edge pass rusher(s), OL depth, RB depth and WR depth are much more pressing.

  19. avatar Green Lantern says:

Yea but right now we dont even have a Starting FS. In the draft you for what you need and we need a Starting Safety.

  20. avatar NYDREAMER says:

It would not surprise me if Mike T attempts to move up. If the team believes they can make the move for a player of this caliber then you do it. With that being said, Myron Rolle is another nice option at the safety position who is smart and can play football.

  21. avatar Brabble says:

Since we got a 7th rounder in 2011, what happens if 2011 is a lockout year?

  22. avatar SMASHMOUTH says:

    Dream scenario:
    - Pass rusher: Sign Porter
    - Safety: Trade up for Berry
    - Slot WR: Draft Jordan Shipley
    - OL depth: Late round pick

I don’t care what else happens but If Tanny could pull off those 4 items, he is a god.

  23. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    Brabble

Draft is not affected by the lockout

this kid will the there in the second round, def worth looking at him,he hits like a mack truch and can also cover, great team guy

  25. avatar HSA says:

The only way I do it is one of those three trades:

    1- 2010 1st + 2011 1st for Berry
    2- 2010 1st +2011 2nd + 2010 4th + 2011 4th
    3- 2010 2nd + 2011 1st + 2010 4th + 2011 4th

Do you think chiefs or Seattle would do this trade?

  26. avatar Max says:

You all know we can trde our first pick and gholston to Mangini for the ninth pick where we can draft Berry

  27. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    E. Weeks-

You write: “. . .it would not surprise me to see the FO to lobby for Berry on draft day.”

I agree: Berry is a monster. He can cover, he can blitz, he can tackle, he can hit.

Berry is a D-Rex player all the way.

  28. avatar Mike D. says:

    +1 smashmouth, i agree with u 100%

if berry and shipley end up in green and white, i will kneel at the altar of trader mike

  29. avatar Steve in Philly says:

    lol Max- exactly!

OMG This kid has it. What ever “it” is hes got it. Now all u guys lobbyin for Mays…. THIS IS WHAT A SAFETY IS SUPPOSE TO LOOK LIKE. I just seen some film on Reshad Jones as well and boy o boy he is a nasty player. Hes a little small but he is Sick also. Not to mention i still like Earl Thomas out of TX. My thinking is we were NOT going to draft a safety because Rex would not have the time to teach the NFL to a kid at the position. BUT if we can get Berry,Jones,or Earl Thomas then im all for it.

My top 4 safety prospects are—-
    BERRY
    Reshard Jones
    Earl Thomas
Mays-(yea hes last nowhere in these guys league)

  32. avatar James in TN says:

Sorry , E. Weeks, I don’t think Berry has any weaknesses, but otherwise a great article.
