Hartsock set to Return

by Weeks on March 8th, 2010 at 3:44 pm

As Bassett reported earlier, the Jets were heading to the bargining table with Ben Hartsock. Apparently they were able to come to come to an accord quickly as “a league source” reports that the Jets and Hartsock have agreed to “terms” that will keep him in Green and White. Details of the deal have yet to come to light.

Update: The deal is reported to be two years.

Per a league souce, it is believed that Hartsock and the Jets have agreed to terms.

The Jets had been kicking around the possibility of pursuing tight end John Paul Foschi, a restricted free agent whom the Bengals opted not to restrict with any of the various available tender offers.

While Hartsock made me want to kick him at times (penalties) he certainly provided the Jets with excellent blocking support that helped propel the run game to the top. Good to see the Jets are trying to keep the 2009 team intact (sans TJ, Rhodes and CB #2).

I would have liked to get Baker back, but oh well.

ok good…i can sleep tonight lol

  3. avatar Jetfan in Miami says:

rumor has it he was literally “Holding” up his deal

  4. avatar Nikolas says:

This guy did not want to sign, but there is no interest by any other team. They would pay him the minimum but then they asked him if he wanted to make a contribution for the new stadium. The also asked him to buy a few PSLs for his family.

  5. avatar CharlieJet80 says:

    Ben,
Did a good job blocking for the Jets. The idea that he did not want to sign does not make sence. Why would any player not want to be in NY with a team that is a current contender. Thats just ridicolous..
    Go Jets!

  6. avatar john l says:

interesting: brandon marshall is a first round tender not a first and 3rd….get marshall get rid of leon for a 2nd and then we would have MARSHALL two 2nd rounders, two 4ths and 5,6,7,8….i could live with that!

  7. avatar Bent says:

I wonder what they’re paying him. He was paid $1.275m last year IIRC. He probably didn’t get much more than that over two years this time.

  8. avatar Nikolas says:

    CharlieJet..

If you were asked to use your salary to buy PSLs so that your family can watch you , would you sign?

    I wouldn’t

  9. avatar ronnie says:

He’s a perfect compliment to Keller.

    Any updates on T-Rich?

  10. avatar LukeV says:

I’m with john on that idea!!!

  11. avatar Brendan says:

    Nikolas,

Where have you seen any of what you wrote about reported?

  12. avatar ronnie says:

“Tannenbaum also didn’t sound like the #Jets will bring back veteran FB Tony Richardson. Says team likes practice squad FB Jason Davis.”

We were this close to the superbowl and now we are going to rely more heavily on Greene, Smith/Idhebigo & Davis instead of Jones, Rhodes & T-Rich.

Very interesting offseason so far. I’m not complaing (yet)

  13. avatar Eric in StL says:

YESSSSSS, WHAT WOULD WE DO WITHOUT HARSOCK?!?!?!?!

    (besides beat Buffalo)

  14. avatar Eric in StL says:

    HARTSOCK*

  15. avatar Brendan says:

Not being T-rich back is goign to be the most underrated non-move of the offseason. Ugh. Don’t like that at all.

This is not reporting.. man! It is called “scientific intuition” That is,
a)put aside your prejudices and feelings
    b) watch the actions, they are all rational (not necessarily intelligent)
    c) eventually they will reveal purpose
    d) synthesize
    e) and then ….project!

    Nik,

Be nice. I wasn’t condescending when I addressed you.

“but then they asked him if he wanted to make a contribution for the new stadium. The also asked him to buy a few PSLs for his family.”

That is not “scientific intuition” as you call it. That is randomly thinking up an idea on your own and putting it into a post as if you read it somewhere.

  19. avatar Nikolas says:

By the way… there is a small probability that the team will release ALAN FANECA!!!

  20. avatar john l says:

    ronnie-

this sounds all to much like the year we lost to oakland in the second round of the playoffs and were looking very promising until we lost coles, morton and hall. mabey this year is diffrent mabey its not.

  21. avatar ronnie says:

Nik, if this was a capped season, then there’s no doubt that Faneca would be gone. Since its uncapped & how heavily we rely on our OL, he’s staying put.

  22. avatar RDubbs says:

This is a solid move. Hartstock did not have a reputation for committing a lot of penalties while with the Falcons. For whatever reason he committed some horrible penalties for us last year but he was a solid blocker and I would not expect the penalties to continue into next year. I’ve also read that his hands are not all that bad but that he chose to carve out a niche for himself in the NFL as a premium blocker and so that is the area in which he’s devoted all of his attention to thus far. Who knows, maybe the guy will also grow into at least somewhat of a receiving option.

  23. avatar Nikolas says:

    Brendan

What I was trying to say..is that they try to do things on the CHEAP, with some humor. Common brother don’t be that sensitive!

  24. avatar ronnie says:

John L., like I said above, I’m disappointed about the releases (especially in an uncapped yr where we are restricted in signing new players). However, I am going to wait and see how this offseason plays out before I say anything.

  25. avatar Bent says:

If it was a capped season, I think they might have asked Faneca to restructure, but it isn’t. I would be flabbergasted to see them release him, even though he was actually below average until the second half of the season (very good in the second half).

I wouldn’t rule out T-Rich being back. Remember resigning him happened kind of late last season. I do agree it would be a big loss, but if he decides to retire, what can you do? To be honest, I didn’t actually think Richardson was as good as most people made out (I disagreed with many other Jets fans that felt he should have been a Pro Bowler). However, he was better than anyone they’re likely to be able to find cheaply.

I do like Sack’s idea of getting a FB that can carry the ball 5 or 6 times a game (or perhaps be the short yardage back) though.

  26. avatar Brendan says:

Sack’s FB/RB hybrid idea I’ve been on board with since I first read it. Leonard Weaver formerly of Philly, Jason Snelling formerly of Atlanta and La’Ron McClain in Balt are three perfect examples of this. Bang between the tackles when their teams need them to pick up a series or two. Can run in short yardage. Can knock snot bubbles out of people blocking for the feature back.

  27. avatar AKA....Drew says:

After the joy and excitement I felt with the Cromartie trade I have begun to get a pretty crappy feeling since.

Now I will not get too bummed but ….dosent the FO realize that we just had a major run in the playoffs there ISNT a salary cap this season?

I am all for having a smart budget but these moves have to have better options than C Washington, James Davis, Digs/Smith, Folk etc…..

Again I am not crying over, TJ, Feely, Douglas, T-Rich, Rhodes because they all had flaws but all of them at once in an uncapped year?

  28. avatar AKA....Drew says:

SD99 idea of the Mike Alstot type RB is a great idea…The problem is they arent that many out there.

Very few have the blocking skills and the RB skills. Most are big college RB’s that rarely blocked in college let alone at the NFL level.

I love the Gerhart kid but are we wasting a 2nd rounder on a project hybrid player?

  29. avatar Bent says:

“….dosent the FO realize that we just had a major run in the playoffs there ISNT a salary cap this season?”

That would be hilarious if the “cap genius” GM didn’t actually know it was an uncapped year.

  30. avatar Nikolas says:

    Bent

I hope you are right…thinking that they try to improve the team and that money is not a consideration. But so far all the moves they have made show that this may not be the case. We will see.
But do I trust them that they have a real plan? I do not. What they call a plan is more like a wish list.

Where is TJs substitute? Where is Rhodes substitute?
I do not see them in FA! So what, they will draft them? And if the rookies are not up to par?
We were 4 injuries and 30 minutes awy from the SB and we started dismantling the team?

  31. avatar Bent says:

Drew – McClain rarely carried the ball in college, so maybe the idea is to get a big FB that can block and give them a shot at being a ball carrier. T-Rich is too slow to do it on the regular.

  32. avatar Bent says:

Nikolas – Hey, I wanted them to retain everyone too. However, I think it’s a little early to complain about a lack of spending, don’t you? If they do cheap out on all their moves this offseason, then you (and everyone else) will have every reason to be pissed, but let’s at least give them a week!

  33. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    Bent

My “dont they know its an uncapped year ” was a little sarcastic but I did like you using my “cap genius” line…..in response.

    Youre a smart fellow Bent

  34. avatar AKA Jack says:

    Nikolas-

What would make you think the Jets don’t have a plan? Does Rex strike you as the kind of guy who doesn’t have a plan? Really?

I’m as anxious as anyone to see what it is but I don’t for a second think they don’t have a plan.

  35. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Like I said earlier…I have full trust in the FO…I was just hoping the Cromartie move was the begining of a happy go lucky offseason

The fear factor of some of these moves…..is lingering

  36. avatar Nikolas says:

    Bent
Just a week? I am willing to give them as long as they want, but let’s not pretend that there is no precedence. This FO has messed things up before!

  37. avatar Nikolas says:

    Aka ….Drew

I see Rex as an overconfident guy- whom I like because he loves football and he is knowledgeable- but …. who will not say anything back to Woody. He is appreciative that he got a chance to be a HC.
Now, if Woody tells him and Tanny that he wants a 20% decrease in the payroll. They will both listen.
So if there is a plan… it could be one of “Do your Best at a 20% cost reduction”. Now this is a plan, but is it a SB plan?

  38. avatar Bent says:

Nikolas – That’s good to hear. I can fully understand anyone being twitchy at this stage.

  39. avatar JayM says:

WOW you guys like to worry free agency just started Friday and you are worried that the moves being made are not good. Just remember the Jets have a lot of quality players that they will have to resign and the money is going to have to come from somewhere this is not baseball. Sometimes you get better deals with players if you wait. This happens every year the high priced players get taken the first week then there is a lull in activity I have full faith in Rex and Mr T in what they are trying to do.

Now I have a question is there any safeties that will be around beyond the second round that the Jets could draft. I read posts yesterday about trading up for the elite safeties and giving up 3 or 4 picks to move up. (not a good move).

  40. avatar AKA Jack says:

I don’t see Woody spending tens of millions to build a new stadium, let his guys play Let’s Make a Deal last draft season to get a franchise QB, bring in an Edwards, a Cromartie and then say, “You know what, never mind. Let’s go cheap.”

    We’ll see.

  41. avatar dave b says:

I went to HS with JP Foschi, guy’s a huge dude, played at Georgia Tech. Was on the Raiders for a bit, even played in a couple Jets preseason games. Last year he started to turn it on, would be a nice compliment to DK.

  42. avatar Nikolas says:

    AKA Jack

Woody did spend millions, but the money was not his!? The money was borrowed and at a relatively high interest rate, and as you know when you borrow money there are monthly payments to be made, in the millions too. And if the sales of the new stadium seats do not go according to PLAN, then the monthly interest rate comes from your own pocket.

  43. avatar Bent says:

    Can’t argue with that, Jack.

JayM – Yeah, Nikolas loves to worry. He comes here so we can make him feel better about things. I like to think that’s the case anyway.

  44. avatar SackDance99 says:

    Drew,

I recognize that the FB/RB will be a project, but what the Jets would get, initially, is the RB and the FB part would take some time (but, maybe less time than you think). Gerhart, for instance, certainly has the size, but he’s not the only possibility out there. I hope T-Rich doesn’t retire, but with Hartsock re-signed and able to play H-back, how pressing is FB? T-Rich rarely ran the ball anyhow, so Hartsock could replace T-Rich rather easily, IMO. The OL is the best run-blocking OL in the NFL and many formations don’t even call for the FB. Plus, a pure FB might be the easiest position to acquire in the NFL.

  45. avatar AKA Jack says:

    Nikolas-

Yes, much of it was borrowed. Which means it has to be repaid. Now as a businessman do you say ‘Let me make my product as crappy as possible and decrease my revenue which makes it harder to might my fiduciary responsibilities.” or do you go the other way, try to put the best product on the field which returns the best on your investment.

Hey, I know we are all antsy, everybody is at this time of the year in the NFL as teams get torn down and rebuilt particularly when you have a coach going into year 2 of his reign. But I don’t see Woody going cheap. Everything I have seen out of him makes me believe he wants a ring as much as anyone and is passionate about this team. This is a guy who’s daughter died unexpectedly and he never left the team last year.

I have faith that he will try to put the best team on the field as determined by his coaches and GM.

  46. avatar rusty sanchez says:

i think keeping ben was good hes a good blocker and i think he can make some plays too if given the chance…gotta work on his holding tho

  47. avatar James in TN says:

    Hartsuck, ehhhhhh…..

Woody bought HALF of a stadium with other peoples money, let’s not cry a river.

The Jets deserve their own venue and thanks to Woody that won’t happen. I do believe he will try going on the cheap because the TV deal pays mighty fine.

If there is a lock out next year, he will be making some serious jack because the deal pays whether or not the NFL fields teams.

ALL corporations are trying to get more for less, just ask Toyota. Woody is no different.

Hartsock retained and we let TJ go.

    Hmmm…….

    Cost cutting bonanza.

Show me a deal so far this season where we didn’t cut cost.

PSL’s and TV revenue. Woody is shorting the market and is going to rake in the cash.

  48. avatar ramble914 says:

    Nikolas,

Look around the rest of the NFL, every teams is doing this.

We need to shakeup the roster a little, we did well last season, but there are definitely holes to fix, Kerry Rhodes being one of them, and that is what Tanny is doing.

Let’s reserve judgement until the finished product is on the field.

  49. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Hartstock isnt exactly Mike Ditka out there

    but

He came late on as a reliable blocking TE after some big time mistakes early, I think that is where the Jets are coming from

We run the crap out of the football and get in a lot of short yardage situations, at Hartstock is reliable on the goal line and can line up at TE instead of Wayne Hunter so the opposing defense cant totally sell out on the run

  50. avatar Drew says:

Hate it, hate it, hate it. Hartsock, while he worked hard and was a serviceable blocker, simply isn’t good enough to get so much playing time. I really wanted the Jets to go after a true second TE with good hands who Sanchez can go to with pressure around him or with no other option open.

  51. avatar WOJF says:

2 years, 3.2M seems very expensive, especially for a guy that we got off the scrap heap last season. I suspect there was quite a bit of interest in him Nikolas.

As for his penalties, since they paid up to keep the guy I assume they were due to the learning curve associated with a new system. If the FO believed this was chronic he would not be back.
