As the Jets journey towards the draft in April, we here at TJB will be taking a look into prospects that could be on the Jets draft board. Today we will be taking a look at: South Florida product, Nate Allen

Projected Round: Late First to Second
Measurables: Stands at 6’0. Weighs in at 207 lbs.
Positives: Allen has good height, hands and speed. He is a good tackler and can shed blocks well in pursuit. He has a good work ethic and good instincts that serve him well. He is great at stopping the run and has fluid hips. He can read the QB well and will rarely get beat deep. Allen is excellent in zone coverage as well. He could also be of value on special teams.
Negatives: Allen needs to work on his backpedal and needs to learn to have balance between run defense and coverage — his mind set has him as a run stopper first. He needs to improve in his man to man coverage. Though a good tackler, Allen won’t send defenders flying like Mays or Berry.
The Bottom Line: While Allen isn’t as impressive as guys like Earl Thomas, Eric Berry or Taylor Mays, he is still a smart safety that could definitely fill the void left by Kerry Rhodes. If the Jets decide to keep their picks Allen could be a possible second round choice (but never doubt “Trader” Mike).

5th rd- DE- C.J. Wilson or Mike Neal
6th rd- OLB- Aurthur Moats
7th rd- RB- Lonyae MillerWhat U guys think?

gangreen4ever- this draft is so deep in general- I’m finding great prospects in the 6 and 7 rounds!
Lonyae Miller- 4.6, 6.8, 5.2 YPC average the last 3 seasons (320 total carries in college)- He was mainly a backup for Ryan Mathews- 2nd best RB in draft! Miller-5’11″, 220lb, 4.5 speed
Aurthur Moats- 6′, 246lb, 4.57 speed- 15.5tfl with 11.5 sacks in 2008, and 23.5 tfl with 11 sacks in 2009, but division 1-AA
-
Bent- take a look at alterraun verner’s stats- unreal #’s
Myron Lewis- decent #’s, big guy- CB/FS -
I hear ya bent- if we can get a couple compensatory in the 5-6th rds. like we talked about the other day about, we will be able to get some good players! Aurthur Moats and Lonyae Miller might go more in the 5th and 6th round!

E. Weeks-
You write: Nate Allen is “a smart safety that could definitely fill the void left by Kerry Rhodes.”
I like Allen, and he would be a great pick-up in the second round.
But I’m not so sure he would be able to fill the hole left by Rhodes. Not in his first year, anyway.
We need a safety who is a solid blizter, solid in coverage, a good run stopper, and a solid tackler, who can hit.
Eric Berry is all of those things. (And, yes, I know it’s unlikely we’ll trade all the way up to get him.)
Nate Allen doesn’t appear to be much of a blitzer, and as you point out yourself, his man coverage needs improvement.
But NA does play the ball well, does read the QB, can get his hips around and intercept, and run back the ball, and is a solid run stopper, and a good tackler.
All of which is to say, we may be able to pick up a quality safety (like Allen) in the second round, but I think it’s not all that likely that such a player will be able to start on day one.
This may be a deep draft, but it’s the unusual player who could come into the NFL and start the first week. And play well. Eric Berry is such a player. And maybe Earl Thomas is well. But these guys are exceptions, rather than the rule.
Which means that if we don’t trade up in the first round for a safety—and we’d have to trade WAY up for Berry—then we’re probably going to have to fill the hole left by Rhodes via trade.

E. Weeks-
Great job with these reports.
One suggestion, though: how about creating a Prospect Watch Page at TJB, with links to all of the Prospect Watch reports?
All you’d have to do is list each player’s name and position (the names perhaps in alphabetical order, for each position), and attach a link to the PW report you’ve already done.
Then all of the links for all of the PW reports would be in one place (the Prospect Watch Page).
And if there was a link on the TJB homepage (under “Pages,” for instance) to the Prospect Watch Page, we could all go back and look up a particular prospect whenever we want.
This would be great to have now, but would also become ever increasingly useful to more and more TJB readers as we get closer and closer to the draft.
Anyway, thanks again for everything, E. Weeks.
-
Ben, I got your e-Mail and I will pass it along to Bassett who has the power over that stuff. I like the suggestion. Thank you for your feedback.
-
My pleasure, E. Weeks.
Hope Bassett likes the idea.
Your PW reports are a solid resource for us here at TJB, and it would be great to have access to them whenever we want (especially when it could be done via such simple means).

No way Shipley lasts until the 4th round.
Id rather take Jared Odrick with 29, and Shipley with #60.

guys we can get our safety in the fourth round. We need to go pass rusher and runningback in the first two rounds of this draft as everything stands. If we sign Fargas or Porter then this will change. I say fourth for a safety and a nickel or dime corner in the 5th then line depth. We are going to sign coles so I don’t think we will need to draft a receiver.
-
I dont think we’ll get BERRY seeing as its such a deep draft and we have more than one need to fill.
If we can’t get AD or J-Peazy then i would like to see us trade up for Brandon Graham or get Jerry Hughes…. i believe we will finally pick AD or even J-Peazy so this is my draft
1. WR Golden Tate
2. S Rashad Jones
4. DE Mike Neal
5. CB Brian Jackson
6. Best O-Line available
7. Best Running Back availableHope all these things transpire but i guess we will all have to wait and see.

What about rolle from fsu? Brilliant kid, great athlete. #1 recruit coming from HS, and is a rhodes scholar. Can be third round steal?

Jets Draft Strategy
1. Trade up (ahead of Miami) and draft Rolando McClain. His versatility, talent and knowledge of the game would be a perfect fit for the Jets defense. He would follow in Bart Scott’s footsteps when he hangs them up/leaves NY.
2. Trade up for Eric Berry. Most of the lottery teams want to trade down because they have multiple needs and the Jets have the players/picks to make it happen.
3. If the Jets don’t trade up I’d take Golden Tate in the 1st RND and Mount Cody in the 2nd RND. Tate is a game changer and stretches the field, which would compliment the current WR core. Cody is athletic for his size, would be a good #2 DT and could be Kris Jenkins protege (as long as you sign Mt. Cody quickly so you don’t end up like the Bengals/Andre Smith contract negotiations.
-
Mid round pick STEAL, Raeshon McNeil CB from ND. McNeil is extremely talented and a great leader, unfortunately you didn’t see him play much on Saturdays because when he was in the games he shut his man down and/or there was politics at play and Weis didn’t let him on the field. McNeil can be seen coaching/instructing his teammates durning games. Great size, good speed and 3.9 GPA in architecture from Notre Dame. This kid is a steal and the would be a great backup, nickel possible safety. McNeil played all DB positions at ND.

Ben – I Just Noticed ! You Described Taylor Mays !? lol
Irony

to me this is a guy that they should consider. tough kid, comes from a good family, excellent work ethic, and a very good athlete. a very good athlete.
it’s a little bit more of a safe pick, and it’s in the second round
also, look at the guy from LSU, jones. very hard hitter. good range.
