Kerry Rhodes Speaks to Arizona Media

by Bassett on March 9th, 2010 at 9:37 am

In case you are interested, some quotes from Kerry Rhodes after yesterday’s press conference with the Cardinals.  You can watch the presser on the Cardinals website.  My thoughts at the very bottom.

On the trade

“In this league, you know there is always a chance for a change.  I am not sitting here saying that I thought it was going to happen, but I knew the opportunity [for a trade] was there. I knew teams were interested and I knew that down the stretch with the Jets we had a little . . . it was a little rocky.

On if he’s happy for a fresh start

“No question.  Whenever you come to a team that has expressed that they really want you here and is going to give you a chance to come out and play and makes plays … whenever you have that chance it’s always a good thing.”

On how things ended

“I don’t know man, it was just a situation where we weren’t seeing eye to eye as a team … uh … as a player and as a franchise.  I mean I got a lot of respect for those guys as the Jets.  They gave me my start, they gave me the big deal there to stay around for a little while and we just didn’t mesh that well at the end of that journey.  So right now it’s a chance for me to get a new start and have a new beginning here.”

Inevitability of a trade

I thought there was a chance.  Right after the season they told me that they wanted me back, and I expressed that I wanted to be back as well, though I thought there was a chance I wouldn’t be back .. I mean in this league, it’s a business, so I guess they felt they needed more [draft] picks, and they could part ways with me and they felt like they had someone who could step into that role, and I’ve moved on from it.

Team and Kerry not seeing eye to eye on off the field (modeling, acting, Twitter, etc.) interests?

(Smiling) Yeah, just get into it, then! (Smiling)

Maybe, they didn’t express it that way to me, they didn’t say that so … I can’t … I mean anybody can speculate on whatever they want so … that wasn’t told to me … so … I don’t know.

What was unique about the Jets defense?

Well .. we were the number one defense last year.  With Rex, he brought a lot of different schemes  to the table.  We knew that …. coming into the season we were going to have a good defense just off the players we had, the scheme we had was good, so whenever you get a chance to go out and be aggressive and make plays and do that type of thing in a defense you get a lot of confidence and as the season went on, we got more and more confident.

On his role for the Cardinals

On the brief talks we had, [Coach Whisenhunt] wants me to come in and be versatile … and that’s the thing I like.  I talked to him and in prior years, before this past year, just me having the ability to move around, be versatile and not just be classified as a free safety or a strong safety, but just be able to move around and help this team out .. it’s going to be great.  Because Adrian is a guy who’s versatile as well, so it’s going to be great.

Mike Tannenbaum talked about the trade too ..

Tannenbaum: “We were successful on defense last year in a lot of categories and Kerry was a big part of it.  He played well here for a number of years. Typically, when a new coaching staff comes in, there are going to be bumps in the road. Obviously, there were some between Kerry and our defensive coaches.”

My Thoughts:

I think that the quotes on how he’s going to be used in the system are very telling, and back up my assumption that Rhodes didn’t like how he was being used in the article from yesterday.  He feels he’s best used all over the field, which in essence means that the defense would revolve around him more.  Ryan’s defense didn’t do that, and neither did Mangini’s in 2008.  From that, he wanted to move on.

More interesting that even that, might have been a potential Freudian slip … did you catch it?

“I don’t know man, it was just a situation where we weren’t seeing eye to eye as a team … uh as a player and as a franchise.

Does this mean he wasn’t getting along with some of the other players on the team?  I’ve seen rumors on Twitter, and it was made clear to me that some of his teammates weren’t all that fond of him … more importantly, who did he have beef with … maybe the guy who was stealing his shine?

Bassett – Yeah, there are rumors flying on certain players, KEY STARS, that didn’t gel with Kerry. I even heard of some locker room fights. I can’t confirm them so take it with a grain of salt!

Oh, I forgot to add the link. I go into detail here: http://jetstwit.com/2010/03/07/a-deep-dive-analysis-on-the-kerry-rhodes-trade/

Scroll down to the sub-title “A Locker Room Torn”.

If this is true(the link about the locker room on jetstwit) I am extremely happy he was sent packing. That could have destroyed our team. Especially the rumor that Revis and he never spoke.

    Goodbye “Carrie”, lol.

Can someone please tell me why we are not, at this point, moving hell and earth to get Atogwe from the Rams?

They used the lowest tender on him, so if they dont match our offer, we get him straight up, no draft picks.

This guy is PERFECT for our D. He hits, tackles, forces a ton of fumbles, and plays hard all the time. This is the guy that NEEDS to be the Rhodes replacement, and if we get him, we will have EASILY the best D in the league.

  5. avatar starz31 says:

You mess with Revis..you get traded….haha, damn right.

  6. avatar Brendan says:

I agree with Josh. But I think they’ll go after Landry instead.

  7. avatar starz31 says:

Seriously though. How could he be popular. The guy talked the most trash, maybe even more than Bart Scott…yet did NOTHING to ever back it up. Scott had a few poor games here and there, but for the most part he backed up his talk. Talking trash and losing…that can’t sit well with teammates.

Yea….news breaker “LilMisNYJet” apparently knows about some fistfight in the locker room with TJ and Rhodes…..again this should be taken with a mouthful of salt.

I did hear a few times (maybe on TJB) that Revis and Rhodes who were one time close were no longer studying film together (meaning Revis was) and Rhodes didnt feel he had to anymore.

  9. avatar starz31 says:

I’d be scared for my life to fight TJ.

  10. avatar AKA....Drew says:

i also know that Rhodes and Braylon were very close. i even think Braylon was living with Rhodes after the trade from Cleveland.

Funny that a new teamate was Rhodes best friend on the team? Maybe becasue they both wanted to be famous outside of football together

  11. avatar josh says:

Rhodes was a cancer, and ultimately, it is in the teams best interest to have gotten rid of him, but I think we jumped the gun.

…that is unless we sign a safety before the draft. I think relying on a rookie to come in puts too much on that kids shoulders and is set up for disappointment

Atogwe to the jets, lets start the petition.

Brandon, Landry wouldnt be bad either, as long as its some sort of veteran presence who doesnt have to both learn a new defense and catch up to the speed of the NFL.

  12. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Drew…good point

I think the Rhodes trade was also a message to Braylon:

“You turn into that guy, you wont be playing football here”

  13. avatar RevisNButthead says:

Reading comprehension perhaps? The person that is his source is emesola not LilMissNYJets. Also, she is usually a reliable source for that site. In any case, I’m not taking it as gospel but like I said, if someone is a cancer in the locker room like Rhodes has been rumored to be I think it was a good idea to get rid of him.

  14. avatar Brendan says:

    josh,

Landry, coming from the Ravens, would probably have a quicker transition to the defense than Atogwe, but I think Atogwe is the better player. I was skeptical of Landry at first because he’s the Ravens strong safety, but he has free safety attributes and would fit the scheme well. I’d be happy with either one, but Atogwe’s tender not requiring a draft pick makes me want that to be the move more. Then we could get a pass rusher in either the 1st or 2nd and then go best available player from then on to add depth to multiple units.

  15. avatar Bent says:

Josh – Maybe they think the Rams will match any offer, so are instead trying to negotiate a trade for him? Same with Landry.

  16. avatar Bent says:

One thing I haven’t seen considered…I wonder if Rhodes was moved as a precursor to making a move for Porter. Remember they had a bit of a bust-up last year.

  17. avatar Brendan says:

Bent, don’t toy with me like that.

  18. what sucks about this to me is that if the fights and “carrie” stuff are true, then we pretty much had to get rid of Rhodes. Now players talk a lot and maybe thru players, other FOs knew that we were definitely parting ways with him, which reduced our leverage. Whatever happened, nothing will ever convince me that a 4th and a 7th are fair value in a trade for Rhodes. Wasn’t he still rated as one of the 5 best safeties this year? Can’t believe how overvalued draft picks have become.

  19. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    bent

I heard Porter was in Arizona for a visit today……Wouldnt he then be teamed with Rhodes?

  20. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    revisNButthead

Youre right I didnt read the link…LilMsNYJet posted this story on a facebook account yesterday.

I didnt realzie it was coming from another source. My apologies to lilmsnyjet….my doubts were directed at emesola….who is a pretty reliable source.

  21. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    Bent

I also heard in an interview that D Dockett was begging the front office to have Porter in to replace Dansby.

  22. avatar josh says:

    Bent-

I agree with the fact that the Rams would match any offer to Atogwe, why wouldnt they if they tendered him so low? They clearly are willing to match any offer to not lose him….

Why not throw in a slew of late round picks to try and get him? I really feel that some sort of maneuver is in the works before the draft to address our safety spot.

Also, with two shut down corners, we dont need a TRUE free safety, in fact, having two strong safety caliber players (guys who came come around and knock the spit out of ppl), may even be more useful to us

Cards are up to something. They got some defensive moves to make and I am still not sure if Matt can handle an NFL season.
