Murrell Visits Patriots

by Bassett on March 9th, 2010 at 10:30 am

The Patriots hosted Jets RFA (now UFA) Marques Murrell on Monday according to Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston.

Murrell seemed to have a lot of promise, but it would seem that Ryan has placed the priority of making Jamaal Westerman the project player for this defense.  Ryan has lauded Westerman as a flexible player for his defense.

Ofcourse he will and so will leon.

Ed L – These are the only ones that qualify as UFAs for the purposes of signing a replacement:

    James Dearth
    Tony Richardson
    Jay Feely
    Marques Douglas
    Larry Izzo
    Ryan Fowler

Hartsock also qualified but he is of course back with the team.

    john l,

Rhodes? Talk about piling on. I don’t think you can seriously blame that loss on Rhodes.

Can anyone tell me why we had a safety playing linebacker when Scott went out against the Colts. Why didn’t we throw Murrell or Westerman in?

  15. avatar Ed L says:

    Thanks bent

Jeff – I guess they needed the speed to counter the Colts spread formations. The did use Pace at ILB a few times, but these were (I think) with Scott at OLB so he could pass rush, which might have been an easier assignment.

It’s not a glowing endorsement for either guy (or Gholston, who got some garbage time snaps).

    brendon-

believe it or not i have not even seen the afc championship game i choose to take sunday premium at my job that day but i did see some highlights and it looked like rhodes was starring into space on some of them especially a touchdown pass. i did listen on the radio though and all i kept hearing was our secondary getting burned. i would figure most of that responsability falls on the saftey.

    John,

I watched the game. Re-watched it (since I happened to partake in some brain-inhibiting that day) to I could remember it clearly. I’m not saying Rhodes is free from blame. But you can’t single him out. It was a letdown for the secondary as a whole. Rhodes might have been late on one TD. Eric Smith was out of position. Lowery & whoever else was trying to cover receivers not named Revis were getting torched. ‘Digs was frozen on one TD. There was plenty of blame to go around, and it should surely be sent around to everyone (except Revis).
