Niners Beatwriter Hasn’t Heard About Leon

by Bassett on March 9th, 2010 at 3:16 pm

Santa Rose Press-Democrat’s NFL beatwriter Matt Maioco – who seems to get good information on the team – says he’s not heard anything about Leon Washington and the Niners.

There have been some names thrown out there of players – such as Jared Gaither and Leon Washington – that the 49ers might be pursuing in free agency. But if the player is a restricted free agent, it just doesn’t make sense for the 49ers to go strong after a player … the 49ers, from what I’ve heard, have not shown interest in Gaither or Washington at this point in the free-agent process.

Interesting … my suspicion is that Keels is leading PFT around by the nose … stay tuned.

A potential Rhodes replacement: Jets are scheduled Wednesday to visit with Cleveland free-agent S Brodney Pool, a former 2nd-round pick.

  3. avatar JesusRevis says:

I just dont see the admiration any of these players have for Keels. His track record is awful, why does he continue to get clients?

  4. avatar JesusRevis says:

    Dylan,

are you getting that off twitter?

  5. avatar CVega says:

    Keels is a tool!!!!

  6. avatar Dylan says:

    JesusRevis,

    Yeah.

  7. avatar Dylan says:

    Adam_Schefter

Browns did not cut S Brodney Pool; they did not tender him a contract, making him free to sign anywhere without compensation.

  8. avatar Brendan says:

    Dylan,

That would mean the Jets would need a UFA to sign elsewhere in order to sign him, no?

  9. avatar Bent says:

Pool was good last year, despite having to play alongside Abe Elam. Remember Andre Maddox saying “I’m better than Brodney Pool, he can’t tackle!”

    Well, he was apparently wrong.

I wouldn’t be upset with that. At least this confirms they’re looking to make a move. Thank goodness!

  10. avatar Bent says:

Brendan, you don’t need to lose a RFA to sign a non-tendered UFA.

  11. avatar JJets says:

    can pool hit and cover?

  12. avatar JesusRevis says:

These rules are too damn confusing

  13. avatar Brendan says:

Ok that’s good then. Looking into Pool. Quick overview shows measurables (size, speed, etc.) very similar to Rhodes.

  14. avatar Brendan says:

I say that in a good way, btw. Rhodes, physically, has everything you could possibly want in a player. It’s the mental makeup that people have issues with, which is hopefully where Pool distinguishes himself from Kerry.

  15. avatar Wolf says:

    Jared Gaither.

Now there is someone I’d pick up. 23 years old, 340 pounds and 7 feet tall.

  16. avatar levi says:

What do you guys know about Pool I didnt watch any of Clevelands games?

  17. avatar Wolf says:

Too bad Poole is prone to concussions.

  18. avatar Dylan says:

Pool was in basically the same situation as Wallace Wright I think. He is a restricted free agent but the Browns chose not to put the tender on him leaving him free to sign with any team.

I’m not sure how good a player he is but he has improved every year and he did have 4 picks in only 11 games last year. He would most likely be a downgrade from Rhodes, but I think he would be an upgrade ovr Smith. I think he started 2 or 3 years for the Browns.

  19. avatar JJets says:

he is younger than rhodes 25
6’2” 210 also had a sack last year, sounds good and hardnosed

  20. avatar JJets says:

I am starting to want pool on this team as long as concussion and head stuff check out

  21. avatar JJets says:

jarvis green left NE for Denver

  22. avatar Dylan says:

He also has experience in a (Rob) Ryan coached defense. I’m not going to say he is a great player because I honestly have no idea. Its good to know that the Jets are not really content with Smith starting though.

  23. avatar mole57 says:

Pool suffered a lot of concussions, I think.

  24. avatar Dylan says:

    mole57,

I’m not sure. Last year he missed 5 games with a concussion, but in the 3 years prior to last season he only missed one game.

  25. avatar JJets says:

He had one last year any other years?

  26. avatar JJets says:

    Dylan,
Does it say why he missed that one

  27. avatar Brendan says:

He had to have had more than just last year’s. Going by injury reports I’m reading, his career was almost over after this last concussion.

  28. avatar Brendan says:

“Brodney Pool suffered at least his fourth concussion in five seasons during Sunday’s 16-7 loss to the Bengals, and will undoubtedly give serious thought to continuing his career.”

    http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2009/11/as_concussions_mount_concerns.html

There’s the link. This guy is a serious injury concern.

  29. avatar Dylan says:

    mole57 and Brendan,

I guess you guys are right. The rules involving concussions weren’t very strict until this season, so I guess that is why he didn’t miss many games.

  30. avatar JJets says:

    Brendan,
good info. i still would take a flier on him and then draft a safety

  31. avatar BKWRXWgn says:

Bottom line good to know the Jets & Co. are looking at potential Safety prospects and am not settling. I’m still waiting for the end result where we can say “so that’s what they planned all along!” Cause right now I’m still stumped as to what their plans are…..

  32. avatar levi says:

Wow how can you expect this guy to strap it up and go out there and hit people. Isnt that what Rex wants is smashmouth. I say we stay away from this tragedy waiting to happen.

  33. avatar nyj2010 says:

Why aren’t we looking at Atogwe then? He is 27 and has no injury risk and we dont have to give up anything for him as St Louis gave him lowest possible tender, only the right of first refusal? Poole is a concussion waiting to happen…

  34. avatar JayM says:

Despite recurrent concussions, Browns FS Brodney Pool will not be retiring from football.

“He has been checked out and has a clean bill of health,” said Pool’s agent. “He is anxious to play football in 2010.” Pool, a restricted free agent, has had at least four concussions in his five-year career, including one that ended his season prematurely last year.

  35. avatar Brendan says:

    nyj2010,

If I had to guess, it’s that the Jets know that the Rams are most likely going to match any reasonable deal for Atogwe (or at least I know I would). They probably want to see what options they have other than working out a trade with the Rams for Atogwe or with the Ravens for Landry.

  36. avatar reality jet fan says:

Someone tell the jets they didnt win anything next year stop being so cheap!

  37. avatar deuce4417 says:

no problem bringing in someone with experience. but lets talk draf. who do you like

    roll?
    mays?
    houston?

i’m thinking roll will be aroung for us at 1 or 2(if we move up)

  38. avatar Wolf says:

Not worth the risk. He’ll get knocked out three games into the season playing in this defense.

Not sure why Woody is zipping up his purse. Jets got major exposure last season. If they don’t succeed the Jets will be broke come 2011 anyway, wether we kept the team intact or not.

    Senseless.

  39. avatar deuce4417 says:

or how about a trad for landry in washington? they are cleaning house

  40. avatar Wolf says:

They must be looking far ahead into the future, making sure they have the cash to lock up guys like Revis, Harris, Edwards, Mangold etc…

That is the only reason I could see letting depth guys go. Now if Leon goes, it will further affirm this assertion.

  41. avatar Wolf says:

Please no Laron Landry. We already have two safeties that can’t cover.

  42. avatar Marvel says:

    Reality Jet Fan

    cheap ???

    Sancize 50mill
    ghost 50 mill
    revis will get 50 mill
    mangold/Dbrick 50 mill
    Scott 50 mill
    etc ……

    (all estimates)
it’s easy to spend other ppls money .. Just sit back & enjoy the ride .. Tanny/Rex/Sanchize .. I honestly don’t see how any Jet fan can be upset .. We are the talk of the town .. The Giants have a recent SB , but I feel that this is becoming our city .. Gotta luv it ..

  43. avatar Brendan says:

    Wolf,

I don’t get how you can see that at all by letting depth players go. Depth players are just that, depth. Not hard to find new ones.

  44. avatar Brendan says:

    Marvel,

While I agree with you on the whole “it’s easy to spend other people’s money” thing, because people do it constantly on here, I do have to make you aware that those figures (while fake/estimated) aren’t necessarily what is going to be paid out. Make sure you recognize that Gholston may only get paid another $3.5 million of guaranteed money and guys like Woody, Faneca, Jenkins all have huge savings for the Jets if they’re cut in future years.

Gotta keep the word “guaranteed” in mind when speaking dollars and cents, NFL style.

  47. avatar JayM says:

I listened to MrT’s conference call yesterday and he said there is a list that is given to him by the NFL on what players the Jets can go after. Does anyone know if that list is posted on the web somewhere? tia

  48. avatar JJets says:

Read & React: A bit inconsistent in this area, as he’s aggressive to come up in run support. Can be tricked by good play-action, though he shows the change-of-direction agility and straight-line speed to recover. Rarely out of position, even if fooled initially. Ballhawk who keeps his eyes trained on the quarterback and has the burst to close on underneath routes.

Man Coverage: A bit high-cut and lacks the foot quickness and loose hips to come down and cover NFL receivers out of the slot, but has good straight-line speed and fair change-of-direction ability for centerfield. Fluid athlete that competes for the ball.

Zone Coverage: Typically a good zone coverage defender, but follows the quarterback’s eyes and will drift out of position at times. Changes direction pretty well for a defender of his size and closes quickly on the ball. Has good range to get to the sideline from the opposite hash. Intimidating hitter who protects the middle of the field. Significantly improved his angles in pursuit in 2009.

Closing/Recovery: Even with his size, this ranks as one of Jones’ better traits. Has a second gear to recover when trailing deep. Good leaping ability. Explosive vertical with good height, long arms and good hand-eye coordination to make the interception. Can plant his foot in the ground and drive downhill to close on underneath routes. Believes the ball is his and competes hard for the interception. Will sneak his hands between the receiver’s to knock the ball away in an attempt to tip it to himself.

Run Support: Improved significantly in this area in 2009, but remains a bit of a work in progress. Reacts aggressively to the run, exploding upfield through the trash to close on the ballcarrier at or near the line of scrimmage. Crashes in a bit out of control and elusive backs with vision can see him coming. Turns quickly and pursues hard when he misses tackles. Takes good angles in pursuit and can track down the faster ballcarrier.

Tackling: Too inconsistent in this area, considering his athleticism, size and strength. Flashes the ability to be textbook hit-lift-drive tackler capable of the eye-popping hit. Likes to lower his shoulder to make big hit and sometimes fails to wrap up. Typically supplies such an explosive collision that ballcarriers aren’t able to maintain their feet, but could see some slipped tackles in the NFL. Good strength for the pull-down tackle.

Intangibles: Good toughness and durability. After redshirting in 2006, played in every game in his college career. Characterized as immature and inconsistent early in his career, but developed into a team leader and one of the steadier players on a defense that underachieved in 2009.

cool …. NFL money is very hard to follow , unless you have the contract sitting in front of you lol & even then …

But did you hair about the Raiders cutting “Javon Walker” on Twitter it said the guy go paid 21 mill for 24 months of work (15 catches) lol .. You can’t just go throwing money around like that be it BIG money or SMALL money because it all adds up ..

Personaly IDE like to see MAYS in a JETS uniform .. All I have is YouTube vid’s to go off of & a highlite vid could make me look NFL ready , but I don’t buy into all that pre draft BOOM or BUST I just think he’ll make for a good safety .. Idk could be wrong but I don’t like Sam Bradford as a top 10 pick but guess what .. He will be ..

  51. avatar Brendan says:

Haha Marvel, let’s just leave any Raiders big $ contract out of our comments? Anything Al Davis does isn’t indicative of a how a rational person operates.

Taylor Mays is interesting, but his weakness is in coverage. But, you can’t teach someone how to be a physical freak, and that’s what he is. I wouldn’t mind getting Mays if he fell to the Jets, but he’s not a guy I’d want the Jets trading up for, since he’s very raw.

  52. avatar Bent says:

JayM – browse NFLlabor.com because they have complete lists of UFAs (subject to restrictions) and RFAs (freely available). Anyone on neither list is either under contract or an exclusive right free agent (both unavailable unless via trade) or has been cut (freely available).
