Prospect Watch: RB James Starks

By E. Weeks on 09. Mar, 2010

As the Jets journey towards the draft in April, we here at TJB will be taking a look into prospects that could be on the Jets draft board. Today we will be taking a look at: Buffalo product, James Starks [via Jon P.]

Projected Round: Fourth or Fifth

Measurables: Stands at 6’2. Weighs in at 218 lbs.

Positives: Starks has a great frame and is very strong. He is very speedy and explosive — a very dangerous threat to opposing defenses. He is very productive when he is healthy and is a great receiver out of the backfield. He has quick feet and is determined to get all the yards he can out of each run.

Negatives: Starks is coming off a serious shoulder injury that shelved him during his senior season. He will hit the hole too fast and won’t allow the play to develop. Needs to become more physical and needs to become more focused in pass protection.

The Bottom Line: Despite his shoulder injury, Starks has attracted the attention of many after his impressive workout at the combine. Although the Jets may be hesitant to look at Starks because of his injury, he seems like a good back that could help make the Jets backfield more dangerous and with other needs that need to be addressed, it would not be a bad idea to give Starks a look in the fourth or fifth (especially if Greene, Washington and Washington will be the 3 backs heading into the season).

Starks Highlights:

I apologize for the lack of footage but hopefully this can give you a small taste of Starks abilities …

I love these pw’s E.Weeks I do not watch alot of college ball so these help me alot.

He has good size and speed but injuries could cost him in this deep draft.

Ben Tate is a guy I have heard some talk about good size and speed maybe a pw on him? If he isnt projected to go to high because I dont see us taking a rb early.

    E. Weeks,

Great analysis as usual. Could you do one on Dorin Dickerson when you have a chance? I think he could be converted to a WR in the NFL.

Ive seen this guy play. he was a power back who had the elusiveness to get to the second level. he could often make the 1st man miss.

Justin Fargas is not coming to NY.

He will either be a Cheif or a 49′er.

Cannot say I am too thrilled with letting Murrell and Wright walk.

If we do get a second for Leon i would be happy with Jonathan Dwyer or LeGarret Blount i think one of these two paired with Shonn Greene would be scary teams would be for mercy.

I haven’t had the time to read everyones comments over the past couple of days, so if I’m not the first to say something like this I apologize. I have seen the reports that the Jets might just be tightening the “purse strings” before the possible lock out next season. It also seems that they are trying to get as many draft picks as possible before the deepest draft in previous years as well as upcoming years. A

As close as this team was last season, I was excited to see if they would make a few moves to shore up the weaknesses, and make a serious run this year. With a slightly more experienced QB, head coach, and a full season under the already stout defense, I thought this team was primed.

However, trimming the fat (contracts that is) could be what sets this talented young core of players up for a long successful future. If the Jets were to go after a few big name RFA’s (losing draft picks), some of allowed UFA’s (big money contracts), or high profile trades (young talent/draft picks/big money contracts) there would be a good possibility that this young core of players would have to be dismantled after next season. Setting the Jets organization back who knows how long.

I’m not excited by the prospect of having to wait, I’m ready now. But I’m also not ready to see even a few of these very important players squandered away, because they made a few moves before the possible work stoppage year. I’m not contract savvy, but if this is what the FO has to do to set the organization up for long term success, then I’m on board.

But, if this plan backfires somehow, it will be awfully hard to eat.

    J! E! T! S! JETS! JETS! JETS!

    igs….

We finally agree on a prospect. Ben Tate is going to be very good. Reminds me of Jonathan Stewart

E Weeks….Whats up with the Chad Jones profile?

    Great job as usual!!

I’ve read a lot about people talikng about our core players. Core players this, core players that. Nobody really identifies who they are. I think 8 is a good number for our core players, so here is my attempt to sort them out, in order of importance.

    1) Revis – essential to what we do on D, best CB in the NFL
    2) Sanchez – he’s the Sanchize baby
    3) Mangold – future, if not current, best OL in the NFL
    4) D Harris – tackling machine, future anchor of the D
    5) Brick – LT is the most important spot besides QB, and Brick’s a beast
    6) War Machine – 2010 NFL leading rusher, just wait
    7) Bart Scott – Leader, QB of the D
    8) Braylon – Needs to step it up, but if he can return to form he’s a stud.

That’s what i think. What do you all think?

BK, I agree with 1-7 (i might change the order, but that doesn’t matter–I’m not willing to see any of the go). Although, the mad backer I wouldn’t consider young (he’ll be 32 in 2 year, ie. after the work stoppage). Braylon is yet to be decided, he’s got to able to catch the easy ones on a regular basis, in order to be included in this group. Another, that could end up on the list after next season based on progression is Comartie. That tandem of Revis and Cro could be devastating, but that is a big maybe depending on if we get cromartie or crimetime.

And, then you can add (hopefully) at least 3-4 draftee’s from this years draft. I’m assuming they can find talent in at least 50% of their picks.

    BK

You might put Cotch there instead of Braylon. Not as big a name, but he is our best receiver. Also depending on how he progresses – Dustin Keller.

Depending on when they get on the field, either Devito or Pitoitoa. Which would be nice

Wow, oops! Yeah Jeff, add keller and J-Co to the list. Possibly Devito at some point, but its going to be tough to see him progress when Jinks gets back.

    E. Weeks-

Thought you might be interested in this from Adam Schefter, regarding a possible replacement for Rhodes:

    _____________________________________

A potential Rhodes replacement: Jets are scheduled Wednesday to visit with Cleveland free-agent S Brodney Pool, a former 2nd-round pick.

Browns did not cut S Brodney Pool; they did not tender him a contract, making him free to sign anywhere without compensation.

Ben Tate is an incredible RB. He reminds me of Shonn Greene; they’re built the same way, run inside the same way, and break them long the same way.

My favorite RBs of this class (outside of Spiller) are:
    Ryan Matthews,
    Jahvid Best,
    and
    Ben Tate

James Starks is scary good. For a guy who’s that big, he ran a 4.5/4.49, and you can see his breakaway speed. He’s a bowling bowl who can run people over and always falls forward. If he’s healthy, he’ll be a productive back in the NFL.

Yea #8 ws between J-Co, Keller and BEds, iwent with the most talented player. It’s a real tough call though, i almost changed it to 9 players ha.

I like Ben Tate and the other RB that improved his stock at the Combine was Montario Hardesty. Both guys deserve a profile…sorry to pile on the work Mr. Weeks!!!

Starks is a beast. Seen the guy play in person, not only does he have the size, he has the speed to go with it, when he gets his chance he’s going to be a starting rb in the nfl. The injury his senior season killed his draftability as he was projected a late 1st round pick before the injury. If he is still around in the 4th round, i think its a no brainer to nab him..
