Prospect Watch: S Chad Jones

By E. Weeks on 09. Mar, 2010

As the Jets journey towards the draft in April, we here at TJB will be taking a look into prospects that could be on the Jets draft board. Today we will be taking a look at: LSU product, Chad Jones

Projected Round: Second

Measurables: Stands at 6’2. Weighs in at 230 lbs.

Positives: Jones’ hips are quick in coverage and he can position his body so well that he can often get a jump on the reciever (though his INT totals don’t really show it). He can maintain good balance and is good going through traffic. He doesn’t trip over his own feet deep in coverage which is always a plus. He can make quick, smart decisions and make the opponent react to him. He can play good pass coverage — his speed helps him keep order deep. He can go after the runner like a LB and has the proper technique — a great supporter against the run. Jones is a very sound tackler that can deliever the big hits. He can also help on STS as well.

Negatives: If he is deep with a speedy receiver, his lack of catch up speed will be exposed. Jones needs to time his leaps better and deflect the ball rather than attack it. His hips are not very fluid when turning.

The Bottom Line: Jones proves to be another solid safety that would certainly be a blip on the Jets radar come April if the position is not addressed through free agency. I’m sure Tannenbaum would like to go after the other few guys in front of him but Jones is the real deal and with some work will most likely thrive as a Jet.

People will talk about “the hit”, or the game this year that he practically won on his own with a couple of TD returns and three consecutive heroic pass deflections on the final drive, but him running down Darren McFadden from behind will stay with me for a long time.

How much of a play maker is Chad Jones? You know like FF’s and Int’s.
Hopefully we can get Ryan Matthews in Round 1. That Kids like Frank Gore.
Of Course This is all plan B you know if we dont trade up for ERIC BERRY!!!

chad jones is simply put just a fantastic football player, he just makes plays. him and titus young from boise state are two people i hope the jets can pick up in the near future, with young coming out next year. adding good solid football players to a team as stacked as the jets is what is going to take us over the top and win a title.

so far out of all the PW’s of safety’s…i have to say this guy seems the best so far…i love his size and his ability to cause turnovers…and the fact that we wont have to trade up to get him…just my thoughts…

I’m with you green lantern! Of players I actually think we have a chance of drafting at # 29, I am hoping for Jerry Hughes or Ryan Mathews.

On Chad Jones- 3 season stats PBU 4,6,6 : Int 1,1,3 : Tackles 34,50,74 . He is 6’2″ 220lbs according to the couple sites I looked him up on. 40 speed- 4.57, bench press was horrible- Only 9 reps! Most sites do have him as the best strong safety, 4th or 5th best safety overall! But I still like Reshad Jones better!

Like I said, he ran down McFadden from behind, so that 4.57 (same as Ed Reed btw) isn’t a huge concern!

Go get him or Reshad Jones.

Bent, who do you think is a better fit?

Ed Reed Ran a 4.5 !? Wow Didn;t Know That

    09. Mar, 2010 at 6:43 pm #

Apparently so. 4.57 per NFLDraftScout, identical to Chad Jones.

Wolf – Hard to say because I think next year the defense will have a different look.

Can I just cop out and say Jones?

These two look like carbon copies of each other. And a new look for our defense already?

Yes, on the whole it will be the same, but I think Rhodes was used in a deep role because that played to his strengths, whereas the new safety I would imagine will play closer to the line.

What do you guys think about trading Edwards and Bryan Thomas and a 4th round pick to Kc for their second round pick then sign brandon marshall and you would give Denver the 29th overall pick then draft jerry Hughes with the 38th overall pick and draft safety chad jones or reshad jones.

My pick of the bunch for a while has been Mr Chad Jones….. Once this guy puts all of his thoughts towards football….He is going to be great

Bent do you rememeber him all over the field against PSU in the bowl game?

I think I even asked you about him during that game.

Thanks Weeks….I have been waiting for this one for a while

    E. Weeks- Reshad Jones should be the next prospect you put up on here! ( Please)

    Reshad Jones 3 season stats- PBU 3,3,7 : Int 2,5,4 : Tackles 57,76,73. He is 6’1″ 215lbs ran a 4.54, benched 225- 24 times, vertical 39.5

On this Jones issue- I dont think Chad Jones will last to get him at #58, and he might be a reach at #29. Really want OLB- Hughes or RB- Mathews at #29 and then take safety at #59- thinking Reshad Jones will be there but not C. Jones

Drew – I remember. Didn’t I tell you his YouTube reel would be awesome?

After a horribly inconsistent Sophomore year, he was great last year and seems to have put his baseball career on the backburner.

I will have Reshad Jones’ PW up tomorrow afternoon/evening.

Brad- I think that chad jones will make it to 61 because any who wants to draft a safety in the second would take Nate Allen and Morgan brunett over chad jones

Thanks E. Weeks- Put up the Reshad Jones NFL Draft Scouting Video – 3:34 Length of video from Youtube.

Jets4life- like i said before- all the draft sites have Chad Jones as the Top Strong Safety, and either the 4th or 5th best safety overall- Berry, Thomas, Mays, Allen or Chad Jones! Morgan Burnett is behind Reshad Jones on the Draft Sites I’ve looked at! If we all like Chad Jones so much why do u think these other safeties will be taken before him! I think Chad Jones is very good, just dont see him lasting til #58 and think it will be reaching at #29.

    Brad….

There is no bigger Chad Jones fan than me….but safeties usually last a ltitle longer…. After Berry, Thomas and Mays…..it will be a while before another one of called.

I think Chad Jones is an excellent FS and I would love to have him if we didn’t have more pressing needs. I still think that our biggest needs are a DL who can occupy 2 blockers and a pass rushing OLB. Those 2 positions are more difficult to fill, as well.

The Ravens never had CBs comparable to our tandem, so they leaned heavily on Ed Reed. They did have Ngata and Suggs though. An adequate FS will suffice as long as we can apply constant pressure to the QB.

If Tanny has a draft at the Revis/Harris level, we could put E Smith, Lowery, Diggs or even Rexy back there, and still dominate. (OK, Rexy is a bit overboard.)

Safety, rbs, a slot receiver, another cb, and a little youth on both lines can come in later rounds or free agency (even UDFA’s –some of whom will be like late round picks in other years).

That being said, this guy is a damn good player.

the mock draft i looked at has chad jones goin early 2nd and reshad jones goin early 3rd…i remember when we drafted kerry in the 4th his description was a ball hawk who was scared of rbs

This is what Mr. Pauline of SI said about observing Chad Jones at the combine. So it’s really hard to know how to accurately scout college players, I have faith in Tanny I’m sure he’ll do good for us.

Chad Jones/S/LSU: Jones ran reasonably well, timing in the mid-4.5s, yet did nothing to dispel the belief he’s solely a downhill safety. He was incredibly slow in reverse and displayed poor footwork. He looked a bit confused on the field and had to be stopped in drills several times to be given direction.

LOVE JONES, and not just because he’s SEC. He was one of the reasons why LSU’s D was stingy. For anyone who wants to see him at his best throw on the MISS ST game. WOW

Bent , what would we be able to get back if we traded out of the first round to like 42? Could we pick up a third? If we could do that then we could go safety and running back in the second round and pick up a pass rusher in the third, corner in the fourth, then line depth with picks 5 through 7.

The value of dropping from 29 to 42 is a mid-to-late 3rd rounder, according to the draft value chart, which though many people say it is outdated, does tend to be accurate where no top 20 picks are involved.
