Schefter: Brodney Pool to visit New York

by Weeks on March 9th, 2010 at 4:22 pm

According to Adam Schefter, former Browns safety Brodney Pool is scheduled to visit the team tomorrow.

A potential Rhodes replacement: Jets are scheduled Wednesday to visit with Cleveland free-agent S Brodney Pool, a former 2nd-round pick.

After the departure of Kerry Rhodes, I’m sure Tannenbaum will leave no stone unturned in his search for a FS. That being said, Pool seems like a very interesting fellow and being curious, I decided to dig up some information on him and this is what I found:

Positives: “A natural FS.” Pool can diagnos plays quickly and make smart decisions. He is good deep support and can provide help in zone coverage as well. He takes good positions and angles and seems to have good hands (11 INT’s with the Browns). Can be used as a CB.

Negatives: Pool isn’t always effective in the box. He isn’t a hard hitter and is long and lanky. He can fail to locate the ball sometimes. Concussions have been an issue for him so their may be some question marks there.

While Pool does seem to have a good set of skills, his injuries will certainly make New York hesitant (he is suspected to have had at least four concussions since his rookie season in 2005). I seriously doubt anything will materialize here and I have a feeling that the Jets just may wait until April to find their new safety (unless of course something changes, which it always manages to do so).

Interesting, I’m happy to see that we’re doing our due diligence but by the scouting report he sounds exactly like Rhodes + injury problems. I still want us to get Atogwe.

A point I thought about the other day though, is the strength of our other 3 base DB’s we could afford to have a rookie Safety if that safety is Earl Thomas or Taylor Mays, but still I’d rather have Atogwe.

  2. avatar Michael M. says:

The Rex/Rob connection is certainly an interesting back story to this visit

  3. avatar Brendan says:

This makes me think that Rhodes is gone because of his paycheck. This guy is the same type of player.

  4. avatar JJets says:

    Brendan,
I am a little worried about concussions.

Check out this guy reshad jones from Georgia, he is nasty. walterfootball had us taking him in the 2nd round.

  5. avatar cold_old_steelers_fan says:

I am not too keen on Mays personally. If Poole is cheap enough he can be used as a FS of last resort in case the draft doesn’t pan out.

  6. avatar JJets says:

Can we sign him and put injury clause in contract.

  7. avatar JJets says:

what is marcus coleman doing these days…… jk

  8. avatar BubbyBrister/shovelpass says:

Does Gibril Wilson really suck that bad taht he has been dumped by two teams in two years? If not, perhaps we can talk to him?

  9. avatar JJets says:

    no gibril wilson please

  10. avatar Bent says:

    JJets – Sure they can.

I’d sign him if possible and then maybe draft one that could cover, as well as working Lowery out at the position to ensure they have sufficient guys that can cover back there.

The concussion issues are a concern, but he did play well last year, albeit on a pretty lousy team.

I have to mention this again:

“I’m better than Brodney Pool. He can’t tackle!” Jets draft pick Andre Maddox, 2005.

  11. avatar bilal says:

    Brandon-
Why does this make it seem like this strictly had to do with money? Can’t it be that the head coach and defensive coordinator didn’t like the way he fit on their defense? Just because this guy has the same skillset doesnt mean it will translate to how he plays for this defense. Maybe they didnt like kerrys work ethic- mike petine was always brutally honest about him “i wouldnt call him a gym rat”

    gibril wilson is no good

  12. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Bent-

Doesn’t it say something about Pool’s relative worth and ability if a team as terrible as the Browns is cutting him?

Especially when, according to Schefter, they didn’t even bother to tender him at any level?

  13. avatar Brendan says:

“Can’t it be that the head coach and defensive coordinator didn’t like the way he fit on their defense?”

Well, how is Pool going to fit on the defense? They have the same skills, except Kerry is better then Pool. It just makes it seem like Woody took the chance to wipe $13 million remaining off the books.

  14. avatar JJets says:

    Ben,
    I would think concussions

  15. avatar JJets says:

guys i don’t buy this the jets are cheap they spent a ton of money last year

  16. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    JJets-

So concussions are warning flag for a team as pathetic as the Browns, but not for us?

  17. avatar NYJ10 says:

atogwe please, any reason we have not heard about him in green and white yet? it makes sense, no compensation involved either if the rams don’t match it

  18. avatar bilal says:

“It just makes it seem like Woody took the chance to wipe $13 million remaining off the books.”

This assumption just seems too easy to make. Like I said- maybe its the personality, the work ethic, fitting in with the rest of the defense. So regardless of the skill set- maybe they believe he might be a better fit- which is why they are bringing him in.

For all the Kerry arguments that go on with Jets fans I dont think anyone believes he doesnt lack the skills to be a consistent probowl caliber player. Where fans disagree is on whether he makes most of his talent. Wouldn’t you agree that Kerry is more talented than Jim Leonhard? Yea well who performed better on the field last year?

  19. avatar JJets says:

    Ben,
We are just bringing him in to talk, I am sure the concussions are a red flag but it all depends on if he checks out. maybe mangini thinks pool doesn’t feet his read and react scheme

  20. avatar deuce4417 says:

with the cover skills of crime time and revis is a cover safety a real need? i think i might want a guy that will come up and take your head off. lets not forget the reason that we do not have kerry is caus he could not tackle a 12 yr old.

  21. avatar Brendan says:

    NYJ10,

I believe the Jets aren’t just signing Atogwe right away is they know that the Rams will match any offer that doesn’t blow them away. So the Jets could be trying to work on some kind of deal to make sure they’re getting their guy. This scenario could also play out for Landry from Baltimore.

  22. avatar JJets says:

rams did bring in pool i think that was from profootball talk or espn

  23. avatar bilal says:

As far as atogwe- word is that the rams will match any offer that he is given which is why teams aren’t seriously going after him. I think it was Glauber on espn first take this morning who did a little piece on him calling him the best safety no one knows.

  24. avatar JJets says:

maybe good news for tj coming back, schefty reporting fast willie parker going to visit kc

  25. avatar Brendan says:

    Deuce,

Yes I think we still need a guy who can cover back there.

    Bilal,

I won’t get into a debate about Rhodes vs. Leonhard since Rhodes is no longer here. But I don’t think it’s crazy to think, in a year when the Jets are obviously cutting costs, that they wouldn’t trade Rhodes to rid them of his contract. Do I want this to be the truth? Of course not. But I wouldn’t be surprised at all if that was the driving force, not Ryan, no the defense, not his attitude. Those greenbacks that we all love to talk about so much.

  26. avatar Bent says:

There’s nothing wrong with his ability based on last season. I did watch several Browns games out of morbid curiosity.

Any tender other than a right of first refusal would have cost the Browns $2.5m because it would be 110% of his 2009 earnings. Maybe they didn’t want to lock him up long term during their rebuilding phase, especially with the injury concerns. They could be cutting costs too!

  27. avatar Revis Christ says:

RESHARD JONES. This dude is an absolute beast. He needs to be our replacement safety if we don’t plan on trading up in the first round for somebody like earl thomas. Jones hits like john lynch and is fast enough to return punts. Dude can also fall back in coverage and has pretty good hands.

Get on youtube and check out his highlights. If you don’t love what you see, you’re crazy. Grabbing him in the 2nd round would be a huge steal for a much needed position we need to fill immediately.

Prospect Watch: Reshard Jones – Georgia.

  28. avatar Revisisbeast says:

    how bout atogwe

  29. avatar Bent says:

Brendan – don’t rule out the fact that they’re saving that money to make another move. We just don’t know yet.

  30. avatar JJets says:

i posted a comprehensive reshad jones scouting report from cbs sports on blog post previous to this

  31. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    JJets-

I don’t think Willie Parker visiting KC tells us anything about which RB the Chiefs are going to try to sign. After all, they met with TJ as well.

As for Pool, shouldn’t we be pursuing a much less concussed safety? Like Landry or Atogwe?

  32. avatar JJets says:

Filed to ESPN: Thomas Jones signs in Kansas City: two years, $5 million. Chiefs have their running back. No need for Willie Parker to visit.

  33. avatar JJets says:

man i am glad he went to kc. they are not very good

  34. avatar Revis Christ says:

    RESHAD JONES*

  35. avatar JJets says:

guys apparently Glauber reported that the rams will match any atogwe deal and landry is not very good in coverage.

I want to sign pool and then get reshad jones. We had a big nate allen fan that reads the blog but he will be gone by time we can pick

  36. avatar daveb says:

    THOMAS JONES SIGNS WITH K.C.

  37. avatar dakar says:

there was just a chad jones prospect watch and then it was gone in a mintue…what happened…

  38. avatar Bent says:

    Maybe they are, Ben.

So TJ’s market value was apparently less than half of what the Jets would have paid him. Also, if the top FA signed for that much, then his replacement should be cheaper.

    Good luck, TJ.

  39. avatar JJets says:

Thomas Jones deal is for $3 million this year, $2 million next year and another $500,000 in incentives.

  40. avatar daveb says:

    accord Adam Scheft

  41. avatar SackDance99 says:

    Brendan,

I think it’s too early to say that the Jets are cutting costs. So far, the Jets made moves as if there were a salary cap. They cut players that because of age or bad fit plus high salary were expendable. I think we agree about TJ and Lito. So, you’re willing to tag the Jets FO as cost-cutting solely because of Kerry? Look, I liked him, too. But, it was clear that he was not a good fit for the system AND his act was wearing thin with his teammates and coaches. Also, Tanny got Cromartie knowing that if he rebounds, keeping him will be very expensive. So, maybe Tanny is looking longer term. Lastly, Trader Mike may trade up in the draft and pay more money for a high draft pick. So, let’s see how the off-season plays out. I’m willing to bet that by the time training camp starts, there will be 1 or 2 more expensive pieces of the puzzle acquired by the FO.

  42. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Bent-

    Thanks.

Pool’s stats from 2009 don’t seem pretty good:

    11 Pdef

    4 INTs

    1 sack

    39 tackles

    0 FF

    _________

    Atogwe from 2009:

    5 Pdef

    2 INTs

    1 sack

    58 tackles

    3 FF

    _________

The one thing that troubles me, regarding Pool, are those concussions. . .

  43. avatar JJets says:

    Bent,
Who do you want to replace tj? Do you like Reshad Jones in 2nd round for safety?

  44. avatar bilal says:

TJ will be a solid veteran backup for jamaal charles- teach him how to be a pro.

  45. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    JJets-

Thanks for the TJ update. Christ, that sucks.

  46. avatar JJets says:

Guys Rams will not let Atogwe go

  47. avatar Le' Sean Roberts says:

POSSIBLY the dumbest move, the Browns release QB Anderson for Seneca Wallace…..I hope it was about the money

  48. avatar bilal says:

Sack – I was going to say the same thing but felt like that topic would go on forever. THe only move the jets have made or not made thats obvious signs of cost cutting is not trying to resign wallace wright- otherwise all the other moves seem like good football decisions to me.

  49. avatar Le' Sean Roberts says:

    Pool sucks…worst than rhodes.

  50. avatar JJets says:

    Le’Sean,
Wallace knows the office Holgrem is installing.

  51. avatar bilal says:

Le’Sean – One could argue that seneca wallace loooked alot better than derek anderson last year.

  52. avatar johnl says:

well i guess we know who are new backup is

  53. avatar JJets says:

maybe wallace wright has a chance to play receiver, Sanchez said he was not that bad in training camp

  54. avatar SackDance99 says:

Weird move by KC. That’s a lot of money to spend on a vet RB when your team has holes at so many positions. I thought a team that is playoff-ready would’ve added Jones, not a possible last place team.

  55. avatar JJets says:

    Le’Sean,
    I meant offense sorry

  56. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Bent-

    That should have been:

Pool’s stats from 2009 DO seem pretty good:

  57. avatar Revis Christ says:

    JJETS

I’ve read all the critiques and reports on jones. I don’t really agree with everything written in the CBS report. Yea he may get fooled on play actions, but pretty typical with a young aggressive safety. He can easily overcome that. I think he’s an outstanding tackler. He uses his arms well and forces all his weight on top of the ball carrier. He’s also very quick, and has the ability to chase running backs down and make strong impact tackles. He would be phenominal in blitz packages as well as rolling coverage over the top of cromartie (also helping with cromarties weak tackling). I think Jones is a no brainer for rex ryan’s defense.

  58. avatar Harvlis says:

TJ got $3M in 2010 and $2M in 2011. He can earn $500K in incentives. I am sick to my stomach. We couldn’t give him $2.5 per year and incentives, based on performance? I’m sick.

  59. avatar Bent says:

Ben – they hardly threw his way, but his numbers still weren’t bad.

Jjets – I like a lot of the rookie class, but would feel more comfortable with at least one veteran that can cover to pair with Leonhard.

  60. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Bent-

I think you were responding to my typo, which I corrected in a subsequent post.

  61. avatar bilal says:

Sack – They wanna groom Jamaal Charles into an elite RB but worried about his small size. They wanted to a find a veteran for him to learn from even though he averaged 121 yards per game rushing in his 8 starts.

  62. avatar SackDance99 says:

    bilal,

Maybe there’s a guy that was deactivated a lot that Rex wants on the active roster, so Wright’s spot on special teams was expendable. For example, maybe Rex wants Westerman active every week. Clearing out Wright, who was never in the WR rotation, clears up a roster spot for a guy that is usable. Just an idea….

  63. avatar JJets says:

    Revis,
I defer to you on this I have not seen him play. I assume you have watched some Georgia games?

    Bent,
Thanks, your truly a man of the people

  64. avatar Bent says:

Ben – no, I suspected that’s what you meant and wanted to point out that he did that without being thrown at much.

Harvlis – that’s probably what they offered him. TJ reportedly refused to return to the Jets because of personal pride.

  65. avatar bilal says:

Harvlis- how do you know TJ asked the same from the jets before he got released. They werent many teams interested in him- maybe he settled for less but was felt like the Jets didnt want him enough.

  66. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Bent-

    You must be psychic!

  67. avatar SackDance99 says:

    bilal,

I hear you on TJ, but if I were the Chiefs GM, I would’ve spent my money on other positions and picked up a stray veteran RB for a lot less money. $3 million for a back up RB is a lot of money.

  68. avatar JJets says:

I am not saying this is like tiki and Eli but i think it taught us something about a qb being a leader on the team. I love Jones I resigned him in madden and he ran well but maybe they want Sanchez to take more leadership

  69. avatar JJets says:

so is richardson going back to kc?

  70. avatar paul says:

TJ was a great Jet. They messed with his pride, and rightfully he left. Good Luck in KC.

We have some holes to fill….

  71. avatar deuce4417 says:

    Revis Christ

that kid jones looks awesome. perfect wrap up form and one hell of a hitter. thanks for the heads up. would be a sick pic if we get him. kind of moves like ed reed

  72. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Bent-

You write: “I like a lot of the rookie class, but would feel more comfortable with at least one veteran [safety] that can cover to pair with Leonhard.”

    I agree.

It’s the rare college player who can start on day one.

Eric Berry is probably that kind of player, but we’d have to trade way up in the draft to get him, which seems unlikely. Earl Thomas may be that kind of player as well, but we’d have to trade up a bit to get him as well.

So it does seem more likely that we’re going to fill the hole at safety with a vet via trade, or by signing someone like Pool.

  73. avatar Bobby says:

    NOOOOOOOOO. HE IS KERRY RHODES

  74. avatar bilal says:

Sack- I agree that the jets arent cutting costs I was just trying to give one possible sign of cost cutting just to be fair to the argument. All the other moves make sense to me regardless of money.

As far as the chiefs, maybe they didnt wanna have to draft another RB. Who knows? All know is that TJ will not be able to come close to the 1400 yards he gained here last year.

  75. avatar SackDance99 says:

    Bent,

If TJ turned down equal money from the Jets because of “pride,” then I’m doubly happy that he’s gone. What “warrior” chooses to go to an also-ran when he could be part of a potential Super Bowl contender, especially a veteran with very few touches left in his career? This makes me appreciate OJ Anderson a lot more. IMO, he was a much better RB than TJ and never reacted with anger when cut by Parcells…the rings meant more to him when he was TJ’s age.

  76. avatar Bent says:

I love Berry, but I don’t love the prospect of signing a top ten pick to a deal that complies with the 30% rule, so I’d rather stand pat in the draft. Who knows though, maybe that’s what they’re shedding salary for. Honestly, I hope not.

I’m not psychic, just looked at the stats and thought you couldn’t possibly mean they don’t look impressive!

  77. avatar paul says:

    SackDance,

TJ was always been a victim, thats why he is going where he can get paid. he only has another year left maybe 2. He is a young 31/32 yr old.

  78. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Bent-

LOL! Yes, I forgot: you’re Sherlock Holmes!

  79. avatar bilal says:

“It’s the rare college player who can start on day one.”

I feel most teams believe when they draft players in the first or second round- they will be either starting or be major contributors immediately.

  80. avatar Bent says:

Elebentary, my dear Watson. (Sorry, that’s terrible).

Sack – I kind of feel the same IF that report is accurate.

  81. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Bent-

Have to say that I think it’s a bit useless to speculate about TJ’s motives for signing with KC, and not resigning with us.

We don’t know, do we, if Mike T matched KC’s two-year offer of $5 million, plus another $500,000 in incentives.

And we don’t know what the behind-the-scenes dynamic has been between the FO and TJ—mostly because Jones has too much class to talk publicly about that sort of thing.

But I think it’s clear: the FO fumbled the ball on this one. Tanny wanted TJ back, and, well, he blew it.

  82. avatar rusty sanchez says:

but didnt kerry start from day one and he was a 4th rounder??

  83. avatar JJets says:

Reshad Jones he seems like a rex guy

  84. avatar SackDance99 says:

    Bent,

There has to be some truth in the report or TJ would not have signed with KC.

  85. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    bilal-

You write: “I feel most teams believe when they draft players in the first or second round- they will be either starting or be major contributors immediately.”

I left out one part of the point I was making:

That should have been: it’s the rare college player who can start on day one. And play well.

Which is to say, a lot of teams may draft in the first and second round with the belief that these players will start in week one. But in a large percentage of cases, that rookie usually doesn’t play very well on day one.

And in another sizealbe percentage of cases, that rookie doesn’t play consistently well over the course of his career.

All of which is to say: very good players are rare.

  86. avatar JJets says:

you guys like fargas, I think he never got a fair shot in oakland

  87. avatar Bent says:

Ben – absolutely agree. We don’t know either way, so we can’t really bash or defend the front office at this stage and it’s probably not that productive to do either anyway. Oh well, onwards and upwards!

Rusty – yes, but he’s more like the exception that proves the rule. Erik Coleman also started, but did Smith, McGraw, Pagel, R. Washington, Maddox…?

  88. avatar Revis Christ says:

    JJets

I’m a huge college football fan, football and basketball. I’ve seen a bunch of Georgia games but not all of them. From what I watched, Jones is just a beast. The kid’s relentless and never gives up on a play.

His tackling skills are great and he’s got the size(6’2), athleticism, and aggressive attitude to take on tight ends if called upon. He did seem to over pursue at times, which would make sense to the insight CBS pointed out about veteran running backs being able to see him coming, but with rex’s tutelage, exotic blitzes and schemes I don’t see that being a problem.

    rusty sanchez-

I’d say Rhodes is that rare player, who played well early in his career. I think he is unusually talented.

But I think there are many more examples of players who didn’t play well in their rookie year, than the other way around.

  90. avatar JJets says:

    Ben,
Are you saying there is still hope for ghost

  91. avatar JJets says:

dang broncos building a d signed jarvis green and jamal williams

  92. avatar MattyC24 says:

If I’m not mistaken, Brodney Pool was the guy that Adrian Peterson basically took with one hand and threw out of bounds on that ridiculous TD run in Week 1…

  93. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    JJets-

Not exactly. There are some very good players who don’t play well in their rookie season, but they at least show some sign of their potential—they have flashes of brilliance, a brilliant game, or even several good games.

Have to say that I haven’t seen anything like that from the Ghost. . .

And this isn’t his rookie season anymore.

  94. avatar Bent says:

He’s also the guy who got away with a pushout on that last minute one handed catch by Baker a few years ago.

  95. avatar JJets says:

    Bent,
We got to get IRA to post on this

  96. avatar dakar says:

    PRIDE kills…

choosing KC over the JETS who will be playoff bound again this year…well that just stupid…and if we do end up winning a SB in the coming years…well then TJ will regret not coming back to the jets…WELL AT LEAST HE CAN BE GRATEFUL TO HIS PRIDE….bad choice…just my thoughts…

  97. avatar jets17 says:

Taylor Mays isnt that gooood.. he just looks for hits and has a hardtime finding the ball. Eric Berry is hands down the best safety available but hel be a high pick which we will need to trade up for.. I like leonhard,, he has one of the best plays of the year for us with his pick against the chargers, a hard hitter.. just a lil undersized.

  98. avatar Bent says:

JJets – IRA from Staten Island has posted here occasionally, but I think he already left his thoughts on Cimini’s blog if you want to see them.

  99. avatar JJets says:

yeah got them, I respect him alot

  100. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    dakar-

As I said above, we it’s a bit useless to speculate about TJ’s motives for signing with KC, and not resigning with us. We’re creating this whole pride story, when we have absolutely no evidence that it is at all true.

We don’t know, for instance, if Mike T matched KC’s two-year offer of $5 million, plus another $500,000 in incentives.

And we don’t know what the behind-the-scenes dynamic has been between the FO and TJ—mostly because Jones has too much class to talk publicly about that sort of thing.

So, as Bent said above: We don’t know either way, so we can’t really bash or defend the FO or TJ, simply because we don’t know what happened behind the scenes.

  101. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Pool is the type of guy when I said that the Jets would bring in a “competent player”

Honestly, I think he would be used in certain situations, kind of like how Rhodes was when he was “benched”

E Smith played the safety spot in the “base” D

But Rhodes played the traditional deep safety role in all the other packages

I guess against more traditional running offenses E Smith would play more, against teams that throw a lot like the Pats, Pool would play more.

I would like the move because we know Pool has started before and is a competent NFL player

  102. avatar Dylan says:

I totally take back what I said about trading Rhodes being a bad move. After hearing that interview, I am glad he is gone. All he did was make excuses and blame his teamates and coaches for everything that happened. We don’t need players like that on the Jets!

  103. avatar mm in md says:

I live in maryland, and get a lot of exposure to both the ravens and the ‘skins down here. i for a second wouldn’t hesitate for the j’s to give rock cartwright a shout-out for running back. plays extremely hard, would be a good complement to greene. also, a ‘rock’ on special teams. sorry, couldn’t resist.

Kerry is gone, and Im not sad one bit. He is a primadonna and always will be. We have seen his best, and those days are long behind him. He is now officially a diva, and Rex and myself have no time for a diva. We r n the business of winning Superbowls and to do that, EVERYONE must be onboard.
TJ -i will miss you,, but if you got to go,, u gotto go! Old 31, young 32 , i dont care, but you rather get rid of a guy before he falls apart. And if he did sign that contract to shove it in our face, have fun losing the next 2 years while we are challenging for the promise land.
