Prospect Watch: CB Alterraun Verner

By E. Weeks on 10. Mar, 2010

As the Jets journey towards the draft in April, we here at TJB will be taking a look into prospects that could be on the Jets draft board. Today we will be taking a look at: UCLA product, Alterraun Verner [via S.L.]

Projected Round: Fourth

Measurables: Stands at 5’10. Weighs in at 180 lbs.

Positives: He is constantly near the ball and is can be very dangerous if it gets into his hands. Verner possess very good instincts and has great, sure hands. He is a smart player and doesn’t let anything bother him (sorry Ocho Johnson). Verner is very aggressive and likes to make plays. He watches the play develop and then attacks — he won’t wait for plays to come to him. Verner has long arms, good footwork and is very experienced and mature. A true leader on the field that gets everyone going.

Negatives: Verner needs to bulk up because he will have issue with bigger, more physical receivers. While he has good speed, Verner can get beat by some of the faster receivers and can get high out of his backpedal and put him out of position.

The Bottom Line: Verner seems like a Rex Ryan guy to me. Positive attitude and aggressive on the field he should definitely be a person of interest because I believe he could thrive along with Revis and Cromartie. I’d keep a close eye on Verner.

I am just curious if anyone else feels the Jets should invest a late round draft pick on a punter? It seems every year our punters are at best average or more often just awful. Since field position is so important and great punters can make up for a bad offensive series by bombing the ball…why not draft a difference maker late (5th round or later) than on a position where the player hopes to make the team as a backup. Who are the best potential pro punters in this year’s draft?

We have two fourth rounders now, correct? If we go OLB/WILL in round 1 and safety or something in round two, this guy looks like a nice guy to pick up in round four.

I wouldn’t mind spending a 6 or 7 on a punter. Although maybe we can find a good undrafted rookie

I’m a UCLA fan so I’m horrible biased, but I absolutely love Verner and am very happy to see him here. I’d be ecstatic if we got him, he was pretty dominant throughout his career although he did get abused by Austin Collie one game. Aside from that game though, he was a stud.

Also, while we’re on the subject of UCLA players, does anyone believe Brian Price could transition to play end in the 3-4? He was completely dominant last year

In the combines I watched this guy. He posses great balance, he turns well to his left and right. He has sure hands and he’s polished. He’s fast enough, there were faster CB’s but none I saw with the overall game Vern posses. I think he could be had in the 4th round. My hope is that the Jets draft this guy in round 4 as I doubt he will be available in round 5. If this were a normal draft without all the early outs coming into the draft, Vern would be a late 2nd to early 3rd round selection. Don’t believe me check out youtube.

I’m not good at evaluating CBs or Safeties coming out of college, but I like size at the position. What’s the buzz on Chris Cook? A 6-2 cover corner that some have projected as a possible safety? I read that he lacked upper body strength (NFL training will help), but ran a sub-4.5 40.

Right Im lookin at how do we get past the Colts and if Verner got abused by Collie once will it happen again?
Besides that i like the young man. Hope we get him in the 4th…….

I havent seen Myron Rolle high on mock drafts. Word is teams dont think hes commited to the game enough. (for his career in neuro surgery) But i think if we can get him in the 4th or 5th round that would be an absolute steal, and possibly help fill the Safety void.

Whats the chances the Jets move Lowery to FS and draft a CB in the middle of the draft. . . I think Lowery projects better as a safety anyway

Alterraun Verner’s stats are unreal in terms of PBU and Int.. 3 year stats- PBU: 15,18,4 Int.: 3,2,5 – I am assuming in his 3rd year people rarely threw too him.

i dont think lowery wud be a good safety.. i think hes just tooo undersized.. he has good hands but hes just not big enough. i wud like the jets to try to trade for Ross from the giants alotho i dont think its possible.

I was thinking of a unique way to look at our Jets upcoming season . It’s kinda realistic, we could look at the team as if it was a NFL contract. Based off performances from recent years we’d get a base salary of 9 wins with a few incentives.

+ 1 win if we have a productive offseason/draft/FAs etc

    + 1 win for a promising pre-season showing.

+ 1 win if we Win our first 3 games of the season .

We get a bonus if we win “2 playoff games”. (bonus= two more years of unquestionable faith in the FO & coaching staff)

*Bonus clause changes to “superbowl victory” if we pick up 3 of the following players*

    Porter, AD , Berry , Sharper , Marshall, Spiller , Bethea , Ed Reed , Shane lechler(I know,I know ) .

    We should be Fine …

any chance this guy could play safety? that would be a nice fit

Verner is not a safety. While he did make plenty of plays against the run, he’s a corner.

I’m also a UCLA guy, so I am also biased towards ATV. He has great fundamentals, but does indeed lack the speed to keep up with some of the more freakish WRs in the NFL. I hope he gets drafted and my guess is that it would be in the middle rounds (4-5).

Many people don’t realize this, but on top of being one of the top college CBs, Verner is an absolute genius. He is graduating from UCLA with (I believe) a 3.5GPA in Applied Mathematics (one of the most difficult majors at a top tier university). He is very well spoken, and if for some reason the NFL doesn’t work out, don’t be surprised to see him as one of our bosses some day.

Jets17 . . i definitely think he is undersized. . . but so is jim leonhard. . however your probably right cuz you definitely need a big hard hitting safety and would love for gang green to take a shot at darren sharper as a good vet presence who could be a good mentor to a later round draft pick. . cheers
