The Jets have been in tough with 60 players they interviewed at the combine for 15 minutes.

We better have learned our lesson with Gholston. No more athletic freaks who can’t actually play
-
i hope we get golden tate watch golden tate own mays on u tube pluse sanchise needs a wr u can come up with
-
jess,
He has Cotch, Braylon & Keller. 27, 27, 25 years old, respectively. Sanchez is 23. It’s not like he’s throwing to Torry Holt, Mushin Muhammad and Tony Gonzalez.
_______
As for Mays:
As I’ve digested the Rhodes trade and the Jets’ options more and more, I think it would be a good fit. Rex wants his FS to be able to blitz and this guy has the physical tools to be a freight train on the blitz. If his willingness to learn to cover better is there, he can be one of the best safeties in football. But that’s a big IF. If he’s sitting there at 29, I say go for it and let him compete with Pool or someone of that level for playing time.

I want BPA-Best Player Available
I don’t want Mays! He is VG as at the Safety position.
-
Brendan?
Have you softened on your Mays stance?
-
Also there is no way he’ll be there at #29. He has too many “things” to like ( even tho I dont like him as a player) that someone will fall in love with him before we get a chance to pick
I would really be annoyed if we traded up for him. If he fell to #29 I still wouldnt like it but I would understand the pick and value.
-
david,
That’s not a fair comparison. Gholston started playing football his junior year of high school. He was plucked from the halls and put on the offensive line. Then he moved to DE in college. Then he moved to OLB in the pros. That’s a lot of position changes in a short time for a guy who had no football background.
Mays’ father played defensive tackle in the NFL for 8 seasons (Stafford Mays is his name). He has been around the game his whole life, and loves football. Now I don’t truly believe Gholston is apathetic to how he performs. I think he cares. But he doesn’t love football. I’ll even admit that. Mays loves football. He has the passion and drive to put in countless hours to be great, and Rex can get him there.
Two totally different players.
-
Haha indeed I am Drew. I realized he has the potential to be a top safety in the league, and from what I’ve been reading he’s extremely passionate about football. That’s the key for me. He loves playing football, wants to be great, and it seems like he wants to be in NY. All positives and I think QBs would tremble when they hear his footsteps on a free-sprint safety blitz.
-
Cromartie scares me. He is always tweeting verses from the bible, yet has 7 kids with 6 women out of wedlock. I wonder if he is for gay marriage?
-
@ wolf well everyone makes dumb choices but God will always forgive us for our mistakes. I think Cromartie gonna play just fine.
-
Just questioning the guys character is all.
I think we still go corner in the draft. We don’t know if this guy has it together.
-
Um…I say we go safety, pass rusher, rb, wr, O-line. In some order. Safety and pass rusher are the team’s two biggest needs right now.
-
Safety is definitely a need but I say we sign both Poole and Jackson and hope some like Reshad or Chad Jones slips into round 3.
Anybody know who the best pass rusher in the draft is?
-
Jackson is already signed by Philly.
I’d say Brandon Graham is the best OLB/WILL pass rusher in the draft. But it’s all about preference. Sergio Kindle & Jerry Hughes are both very good as well.
-
brendan
you hit it on the head right there pass rusher/safety with the 1st pic. could always pick up jones in the later rounds, awesome tackler
-
Chad Jones sounds like a perfect fit after drafting a passrusher ealry….
He has alot of the same qualities that mays has expect i think he will be a much beter cover safety at the next level.
But I am clearly biased to Jones

Brendan:
I know they are two totally different players and agree with the points your making. As a result, your comments are actually even more of an indictment against Mays, as he should be a much better playmaker for all the reasons you mention.
I am merely speaking to the comparative athleticism. Mays, like Gholston has freakish mesurables, but doesn’t necessarily have the ability to truly apply and exploit them, hence is literally poor production over four years, in one of the nations best defenses that is forced to be in pass coverage just as much as anyone else in the country over the same period and due to the huge leads they have almost every week. With the shear number of pass attempts against that good of a D, his miniscule production becomes even more pronounced, when you consider how much playing time he has had over the years.
I would also suggest that Rex is a awesome D coordinator, if not the best. That does not mean he can take any player and turn them into a better player, only put them in a position to make plays. Obviously, he did not improve 25 and 50, as players. Let’s not confuse the two skill sets and assume they are interchangeable. His coaches are responsible for that function now, not Rex.
That is a huge red flag!
-
I have a feeling Mr T is moving up in the draft again….
-
david,
The thing is, Mays doesn’t have many impact plays because opposing teams steered clear of him at all costs. I hate USC, but Mays is certainly a football player. He plays better going forwards than backwards, but he isn’t lost in coverage. He is already light years ahead of where Gholston was at the same point in his career.
Drew,
I like Chad Jones. I also like Reshad Jones in the 2nd round. Either of those two would have me feeling good about the future of the Jets secondary. I’m not locked into Mays by any means, I just think he’d be a good player once Rex got his hands on him and since Rex likes to blitz and move his safeties up in the box and all over the field, I think Mays’ size and abilities could be utilized like no other by Rex. But the Jones brothers (no relation) would be very good additions as well, since both put their nose right in there and can make plays.
-
Draft mays, we don’t need a great cover safety, we have two lockdown corners- get someone who knocks people out
-
No, Please no Taylor Mays… The guys a genetic freak, but you need someone to cover. Just b/c the guy can run a 4.3 in the 40 it really doesnt make him a pass rusher. I think he’s top heavy also. We need a pass rusher w/ our 1st rounder. Originally it would’ve been McCourty or Wilson, but since Cro came over its OLB all day. Pass rushing is not about 40yd dashes, its about acceleration, initial burst, 3-cone drills and HIPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its all in change of direction and that is predominantly in your hips. Give me Jerry Hughes, 6’2 cat quick, an repetoire of moves and fast. Watch his 10-12min youtube video. Check the combine drills on NFL.COM and see what other scouts say. He’s the best! Dont get me wrong, I like Graham from Michigan a lot, but he’ll be gone…. Next best player is Hughes, unless we still go McCourty ( can never have enough CB’s) or trade down. After him, i’ll take Jason Worilds 6’1. I dont mind my OLB’S short, b/c they almost always have leverage.. I read the kid Worilds has the quickest first scouts have seen in yrs.
2nd round give me Rashad Jones, yeah Mays can hit, but have you guys seen this boy hit? Wow, and he has good hands, good speed, and when he gets a pick he doesnt run like he’s tripping ( KERRY RHODES).
-
Brendan:
Teams stay clear of all playmakers, but the point is that playmakers still find ways to make plays. You’re making excuses for the guy!
Every team finds ways to stay clear of playmakers for the most part, especially guys like Reed and Sharper and they still make the plays. Offenses avoid them in their game planning, yet that doesn’t stop those guys from being the greatest playmakers of all time.
Mays has a lot of trouble stopping, cutting and changing direction, because he cant keep moving his feet in and out during receivers making their breaks, which slows him down considerably. If you watch the Ohio State game, you will see how they actually exploited this weakness. Other teams might not have been as bold because they might not have had the overall talent to challenge him. That avoidance will end at the next level.
-
David,
In college ball it’s not the same as the NFL, players can’t be taken out of games much easier through gameplanning. Mays doesn’t have great ball skills, but on an NFL defense where he’d be thrown at more than thrown away from, he’ll make plays.
His biggest weakness is technique, which can be taught. He’s got incredible range & has size to deflect & get to passes most safeties just can’t. He’s intense, has instincts, with a great work ethic. If his biggest weakness is that he’s not technically sound then I can live with that, since that’s something that can be taught. He could be what we all wished Rhodes was, a complete safety with elite centerfielder-type range who will lay some thump on guys going over the middle.
As I said to Drew, I’m not locked into Mays, but I think if he’s at 29 (or maybe a few spots higher) the Jets should seriously consider him. He could be a stud for a long time.
-
As I said If Rex Likes him get him he knows more about Defense than all of us combined or ever will.
Sign Sharper and Porter then Draft Mays and let our youngin learn from of the best Ball Hawks ever. -
I like GL’s plan. Scratch that. I love it, actually.
Why have I not heard anything about Joey Porter yet? Rex needs to grab Bart, hop in Woody’s private Jet and have the closest thing to Joey Porter (personality-wise) tell Joey why he should be in green & white. Boom done deal.
“Joey, you can talk as much garbage as you want, you won’t have to play only 1/2 the snaps, you get to be on the #1 defense in football, Rex is the man, the fans are insane, home games are a zoo, and we need you”
-
Gholston DOES NOT EQUAL Mays.
I wish that comparison would stop because it’s unwarranted. For one, Mays (for all his technical failings) is competitive and aggressive, laying the wood on multiple players throughout his career.
If Rex signs on and thinks he can make something of this overrated but athletic freak of nature, then I am all for it.

I found the same thing about taylor mays twitter account nd posted about it a few days ago. I deff think the jets have been in contact with him y would he asklike 7 jets to follow him nd y would kerry say that to him
