Prospect Watch: DT Terrence “Mount” Cody

By E. Weeks on 11. Mar, 2010

As the Jets journey towards the draft in April, we here at TJB will be taking a look into prospects that could be on the Jets draft board. Today we will be taking a look at: Alabama product, Terrence “Mount” Cody

Projected Round: First or Second

Measurables: Stands at 6’3. Weighs in at 348 lbs.

Positives: Cody is one of those rare NT’s you’ll find who can occupy two blockers at once. He has the ability to overpower blockers and is good at pushing the ball carrier back in short yardage situations. His strength makes him extremely difficult to deal with. He does a nice job of using his hands to block kicks and is overall very disruptive. Cody managed to get down to 348 lbs at the Alabama Pro Day and if he can keep it within that area, he will certainly improve his stock.

Negatives: He lacks agility and isn’t a great pass rusher. He may not be an every down player as well. His effort and motor have been put into question.

The Bottom Line: I wasn’t going to do a PW on Cody because it just did not seem like a realistic possibility but after losing the weight then having Rex Ryan show up to the Alabama Pro Day, I got quite a few e-Mail’s asking me about Cody. Overall, Cody would be a monster to have on the aging defensive line. Between him and Kris Jenkins and then having Revis and Cromartie in the secondary, the defense would be very dangerous. While I would love to see it happen, there are a bunch of other needs that need to be addressed and it seems unlikely Tannenbaum will draft Cody.

Cody Highlights:

Drop me an e-Mail at tjb.weeks@yahoo.com if you want to see a particular player analyzed or shoot off some feedback.

One more negative to add to the list: Alvin Keels is his agent.

very true mole, already a no no. I was drueling at the idea of Mt. Cody when he was projected to be a low first round pick months ago. That is until his weight started to climb each week, and before you know it….2nd rounder lol

I would say he is agile for his size.

I wanted this guy until I heard he was represented by Keels. What’s the point in drafting a guy who will probably hold out with unrealistic demands and even if they sign, will be behind in their development and may not contribute until 2012 if there’s a lockout?

I feel pretty much the same as Bent. Although, I think that he may be worth the risk because he can be dominant, a force like Big Jenks. But Keels ughhhhhhh why the hell does this guy have to exist. He’s taken the “sleazy agent” title away from Drew Rosenhaus.

Do we go for Gerard Warren??? He can play DT and DE in our scheme I think..Especially if we lose Howard Douglas.

Haha, I guess I did forget to add Keels to the negatives.

Cody if your reading this right now, find a new agent!

i do not draft this guy. NO WAY.

i want football players. not someone who needs a baby sitter and a daily weigh in. there are only so many difficult personalities, especially in football, that you can take on, before it becomes the identity of your team. forget this bum.

draft a guy like odrick, price from ucla, or even a jerry hughes from tcu. all with high motors, and good character.

And i think it would be stupid to spend a first rounder on this gut, oops i mean guy. We need help at DE/OLB, FS, RB, CB, WR. We can wait till next year to draft a DT.

Once I saw that this guy is represented by the resident pimp agent I knew it was over.

I just dont understand how after the butcher job Keels did with A Smith last year how another player let alone another Alabama kid goes this route?

He lost a ton of weight since the Senior Bowl but then barely got 20 reps on the bench at his Pro Day. Similar to Smith last year he is talented …..but unlike Smith he should fall in the draft.

Just not as interested as I once was. Dan Williams has jumped way over him in value and as a prospect

    11. Mar, 2010 at 5:43 pm #

Funny I found his agent was Keels becasue Keels “reported” Cody did 32 reps on his bench at his Pro day instead of the 22 reps he really did.

What a clown Keels is. Just makes me question how an intelligent kid like Leon stayed with this guy

The whole “motivation” thing scares me badly a la Gholston.

BUT at least he wouldn’t have to learn a new postion. Also, having him in the midlle rotation with Jenks would be AWESOME.

If we fill safety elsewhere, I think he’s worth the risk.

I say “no thanks” to Mt. Cody…he strikes me as the opposite of , say, Michael Oher.

Mt. Cody wouldn’t be sooo bad because in a 3-4 you could never use enough big guys to clog two holes.
Also. imagine Rex, Jenks and Mt. Cody out for dinner…….oh me oh my

worth a second round pick. Gentlemen someone will draft him, Jenkins could move to the outside. He’s already lost 22lbs on his own, Ryan would have him football ready with a weight clause.

  16. JustAGreenGuy
    11. Mar, 2010 at 6:22 pm #

Motivation is always questioned about guys who weigh over 350lbs. We heard tons of it about Jenkins when we traded for him and same about Shaun Rogers. They have both performed well. Plus the guy worked his weigh out of Juco to a strong program. I was all for drafting him until I found out moments ago that Keels was his agent. Now I think he is an idiot.

    11. Mar, 2010 at 6:27 pm #

You guys have a short memory. A certain guy that everyone on this string loves (Chris Jenkins), had the same knock against him and has weight clauses in his contract. All I want is the BPA=Best Player Available.

If he’s the BPA, then I would love to see him in the rotation. Jenkins is no spring chicken, coming off an injury and Pouha did a solid job backing up. He would be a great player to have in a few years, when either of Jenks and Pouha my be done or gone.

22 reps in the bench is pathetic for someone who weighs 350. and he is a sloppy 350 – not like big jinx who is built like a house.

i am very skeptical on this kid. if he fell all the way to the bottom of the 2nd round i would consider it. otherwise, no thanks

L Blount decided to not show up at all at his Pro Day today. Wow!!

I hope he has a good explanation….If not the guy just slipped out of the draft completely.

    Bigkatt

After his 4.7 combine 40 his stock was falling anyway. Not showing up to the Pro-day will be a major issue considering he is already a red flag prospect to some teams.

Oregon must feel dumb that they supported this kid and then he just didnt show up today…..unless he had a really good excuse.

In saying that I would still take a late round flyer on him…lol

    11. Mar, 2010 at 7:08 pm #

    BigKatt,

Ryan was there for Cody. He followed him throughout the positional drills. I know this for a fact…

    brian311,

You’re one of the reasons I hate combine/pro days, you put to much into it. His max on bench and squat would mean more that repping 225.

BTW Cody could’ve gotten 30, he just has poor technique with the bench press. Again, I know this for a fact.

I would rather have Cam Thomas from UNC. 6”4 330 pounds and got 31 reps in bench press. Also Geno Atkins and Mike Neal might be decent DE would we can get third maybe fourth round.

I was at the Bama/Tennesse game this year and I love this guy. While they say he doesn’t rush the passer, he clearly knows how to get quick penetration into the backfield. How else would he have blocked those two kicks versus the Vols?

Any lack of production (sacks, TFL, etc) is probably due to the fact teams game planned around him and he saw constant double ad triple teams.

This guy is impressive in person, and having him rotate with Jenks would keep both guys fresh and healthy through the season.

The Jets should draft best available, and it may be this guy.

Just saw this on NFL.com. Porter to the JETS aint gonna happen.

“My whole plan was to come back closer to California,” said Porter, who’s from Bakersfield. “Having Whisenhunt and Russ (Grimm, an assistant coach) and them guys be out here in Arizona, it was definitely one of the places I wanted to come look at. … I’m looking to play for a West Coast team I know everything that Whiz is about. He had me over there in Pittsburgh for eight years, so I don’t have to be blindsided by new coaches and wonder how I fit. I know exactly how I would fit.”

    Hey Guys, “Check this out”

Rex is known to draft DTs and turn them into DEs. For example, look at the DE from the Ravens Haloti Nata. I hope he will do the same here and maybe consider the DT Dan Williams or other big DEs like the kid from Syracuse and the kid from Penn State.

In the second round take the best WR then work on the defense in later rounds. What do you guys think???
    WHAT DO YOU THINK BENT?

Thanks Guys. Jets just called me today for season tickets. I work in East Rutherford NJ and lived there for 7 years. Now I live in the Poconos about 86 miles from the stadium. Go Jets

Adam_Schefter Not just LT news in NY: Jets reached agreement on a one-year, $1.3 million deal with former Browns S Brodney Pool.

  40. Eddie DiGio
    11. Mar, 2010 at 8:41 pm #

Pool might surprise some people…the guy is a former 2nd rd pick and has some ability

You look at his numbers in 09. and they stack up right next to Kerry Rhodes, while playing in a vastly inferior defense

    11. Mar, 2010 at 8:42 pm #

he played for rex’s bro…..bet rexy has all the info on him

I think this Brodney Pool signing is going to prove to be very underrated.

  43. Dylan
    11. Mar, 2010 at 8:47 pm #

I love the Pool signing. He has very similar stats to Rhodes and is two years younger. IF he can stay healthy, the Jets cut 3 mil off the payroll without downgrading at FS. Now we need to sign LT. Its been a pretty good offseason so far though. I definitely can’t complain.

  44. Brad
    11. Mar, 2010 at 8:49 pm #

I like it- just hope he can stay healthy- away from Concussions. Believe I read he has had 4 Concussions in the last 5 years. There was some debate that he should retire.

  45. Eddie DiGio
    11. Mar, 2010 at 8:51 pm #

One thing I read about Pool that I liked…

He was athletic enough to play corner. He did that for the Browns in his second year. In fact he played the whole year at CB that year

Is this guy Ed Reed or Troy P? No, but he doesnt have to be

All this guy has to do is play a solid safety, make an occasional play on the ball and dont give up the big play…all while getting coached by the best coaches in the NFL

  46. Eddie DiGio
    11. Mar, 2010 at 8:52 pm #

    And lets face it

Kerry Rhodes of 06 was a distant memory, the guy hadnt played like that since he got paid

i can hear it now: brodney gets the interception and the crowed imediately starts yelling POOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLL.

had not had a chance to do that since TOOOOOOOON

actually had a chance with hugh douglas but he was a waste.

  48. Bent
    11. Mar, 2010 at 8:59 pm #

Charlie D – not a bad plan, although I think they need to address the pass rush too. I think we should see some of Pouha at DE this year.

  49. Bent
    11. Mar, 2010 at 9:02 pm #

Johnl – you know what would sound really good chanted in that way? Gholston. It would sound like a Brazilian soccer commentator. Maybe he will make a play one day, so we can try it out.

  50. Brad
    11. Mar, 2010 at 9:03 pm #

Also Pool played for Rex’s brother- so the concepts and terminology will probably be similar for him to step in and excel in this defense pretty quickly!

Not sure if this kid is worth a late 1st… but guys with his size, strength, and agility are very rare. He could be an attractive replacement for Jenkins in 2-3 years.

Jinx is way stronger then this guy you can tell just by looking at the too the this giys a blob . jinx has fat but a good amount of mucle to back it up .

This guys a bust garenteed .

Second negitive is Keeles is his agent , he will probably hold out like crabtree .

We shouldnt get any player represented by keels we dont need the headaces

Mt Cody shutdown UF’s dive option in SEC Championship. In college he completely shuts down the opponents running game between the tackles. That being said, the NFL double teaming him will be much better than the college double teams. Plus we all know abou his work ethic. Although…..his team just won a Natl Championship. Kind of hard to get back on the horse right after reaching the summit, even if it is for a job interview
