News: Welcome Brodney Pool to New York

by Weeks on March 11th, 2010 at 8:52 pm

According to Adam Schefter, the Jets were able to come to an agreement with former Browns safety, Brodney Pool. The deal will keep him in New York for at least one year at $1.3 million.

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the New York Jets reached an agreement on a one-year, $1.3 million deal with Pool on Thursday night.

Pool has played his entire five-year career in Cleveland but wasn’t tendered by the Browns. That means the Jets won’t have to send any compensation to the Browns, even though Pool was technically a restricted free agent.

I think this is a good pick up by the Jets. While his health history will certainly be a cause for concern, Pool is a good safety that can really thrive in the league as long as he remains healthy (and being under the direction of Rex Ryan will no doubt help as well). The good part is the Jets don’t have to send anything to Cleveland in return so this could potentially turn into a low risk, high reward deal depending on how the season plays out.

Glad to see the Jets are trying to build up the roster early though I still believe safety will still be a priority in April mainly due to the uncertainty of Pool’s health. Regardless, welcome to New York Brodney!

i like this signing. if he can stay healthy he should be a good addition. plus, he spent last season in rob ryan’s defense. now we can draft a project safety later in the draft as opposed to in the 2nd round.

  2. avatar dtrain says:

This is a good pickup… guy has some skills and this may not force us to burn a 1st rounder/trade up for a S

  3. avatar Bent says:

The Jets are coming together at the seams!

They should still draft one, but I like this pickup.

  4. avatar brightfuture says:

low risk high reward sums it up

  5. avatar TB says:

Like the move! Man I cannot wait for football!

  6. avatar Dylan says:

The Jets are going to be very good next year. I like this signing a lot. Now the Jets don’t NEED to take a FS in the first 2 rounds. They still can, but they don’t have to. Its great not having any glaring needs going into the draft. The Jets can take the BPA at WR, OL, DL, OLB, S, or RB (if they don’t sign a vet). Or else we can trade up for a guy like Graham.

  7. avatar johnl says:

    POOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!

  8. avatar James says:

If he stays healthy, it could be a steal. Though I do think it was telling when he didn’t even receive a tender. I fully expect us to still take a safety in the first two rounds.

  9. avatar nyjetsman says:

    i can dig this move

  10. avatar atrain says:

can be rewarding if he plays focused.. young talent…
    NOW go get PORTER!!!!!!!!!

  11. avatar bono-zoffa says:

GREAT pickup, 3 concussions in 3 years. GREAT….. I guess this is the best we can hope for, barring a miracle come draft day.

  12. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Good job by the Jets here

Pool is a very athletic guy who can be that “deep” safety we need against the teams that like to spread it out

They could have done ALOT worse than B Pool…might be a STEAL

  13. avatar jcc says:

We definitely could have done a lot worse, but in an uncapped year we shouldn’t consider this to be a filled hole. We should look to try to find a better option, but it allows us to draft a pass rusher first without having to question it, which I definitely like.

  14. avatar Dylan says:

Its also good to know that he can fill in at CB if need be. I think we learned last season that a team can never have too many CBs!

  15. avatar Elroy JETSon says:

wow no Reshad Jones aww man!!!!

  16. avatar levi says:

This guy needs to wear a helmet 24/7 with all his concussions. If he stays healthy he will do good. Nice pick up.

  17. avatar jvsvn says:

Yes, the fact that he didn’t get a tender raises all kind of questions. But Rex’s brother was his DC. It’s hard to image that they made this move without complete information about his status. Assuming he stays healthy, this is a good pick up.

  18. avatar GANGGREEN says:

Low risk? We just spent 1.3 million on a guy that is one hit away from retirement..How well can Pool play in the run support or taking out a receiver over the middle if he is prone to head injuries….Buyer beware is all i’m saying…

  19. avatar johnl says:

don’t worry ganggreen we have eric ” the headhunter” smith for that

  20. avatar James says:

$1.3M is barely anything for a potential starter.

  21. avatar GANGGREEN says:

    True very true Johnl LMAO…

  22. avatar Harvlis says:

If Pool can stay healthy, this would be a beautiful pick-up. He is 6’2″ and 25 years old. We have a young, talented, & experienced defensive backfield. I like this. Brightfuture summed it up — Low risk, possible high reward. I’m with Atrain — now go get Porter. Then, draft the biggest, baddest D-lineman you can get. Teams will not want to play us, this season. Damn, I hope Jenkins can stay healthy. I loved that playoff run.

  23. avatar JAY says:

LOVE THE MOVE NOW GO SIGN PORTER AND DONT LET LT LEAVE TOMORROW WITHOUT SIGNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. avatar jvsvn says:

$1.3M is basically the price of a second round tender but, in this case, without the need to give up a pick. Again, it all depends on his health. If he can stay on the field, it’s a great deal financially.

  25. avatar TJBfan (twitter @infresco4) says:

Bent that literally made me laugh out loud.

It does ring true however, the Jets are making really good moves. I think there is also an underlying factor in everything they’ve done so far….

    In an uncapped year the Jets aren’t spending money like crazy, they are making low risk high reward moves. There are 3 possible reasons and likely a combination of all three;
#1) Contract year – Get higher performance from new pieces to the puzzle
#2) Possible work stoppage…..no long contracts on newbies just in case…
#3) Jets have been working on an optimized formula to sign their stars(Revis, Mangold, DBrick, etc) so that it would be very cap friendly in the future and want to create the other contracts AFTER the cap has been introduced so they don’t end up in “cap hell”. This could also explain why they wanted to dump Rhodes future salary in an uncapped year….

All just speculation, but enough of my conspiracy theories. From what I’ve seen of Pool I’ve been impressed. The concussions worry me but more so for his personal health than it interfering with his talent.

  26. avatar Bent says:

Elroy – I wouldn’t rule out Jones or a player of that type. This move just means that guy wouldn’t have to start.

Other than right of refusal only, each RFA tag would’ve cost $2.3m, clearly more than he was likely to earn. Since he only got $1.3m maybe they were hoping they could retain him for less than the ROFR tender ($1.2m).

Thankfully, we now don’t have to go with Smith or Digs full time.

  27. avatar atrain says:

    GOOD MOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TANNY

  28. avatar Eric in StL says:

Stop being paranoid, great pick up, we’ll draft a safety in the 4th now. WILL 1st, RB 2nd, FS 4th

  29. avatar andrew says:

i think its a good move he had 4 picks in 11 games if healthy he can be a very good safety similar to rhodes

  30. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Concussions are a red flag, no doubt, but its a ONE YEAR DEAL…

and as john l said, Eric “I broke Boldins face wide open” Smith can be used on running downs

Also as other have eluded to, Trader Mike can be Trader Mike. He sees a guy he wants and a team floundering, just like the kicker in the Waterboy, he says “thats my B#tch” and swindles there number one pick out of them

  31. avatar Dylan says:

    TJBfan (twitter @infresco4),

I think its a combination of #2 and #3. I think the Rhodes trade was a salary dump. I don’t really have a problem with the Jets trying to save money, since they are going to need to lockup a lot of players next year.

  32. avatar GANGGREEN says:

I know James just 4 concussions in 5 years is no jokin matter…I’m hoping for the best the percentages dont play out well for players with reoccuring head injuries…Lets just hope he plays more than he sits and i’ll be grinning all the way the bank….

  33. avatar Bent says:

Smith had at least one concussion too, don’t forget.

It’s because of the risk that they should draft one too. But the risk that an unproven rookie could struggle to adjust to the NFL was also important and the Pool signing protects against that too.

  34. avatar Dylan says:

The Jets could draft another three DBs and Rex would find a way to use them all. The Jets defense revolves around the DBs, much like the Ravens defense revolves around the LBs.

  35. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

I still think we can draft Taylor Mays at 29 if he is there.

If not we go best DT/DE

  36. avatar Brad says:

Cant wait for the draft to see this team really come together- way too many days to wait though!

  37. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

still need another WR. Welcome back Coles???? If we can sign Coles, and Tomlinson and match LW we will be looking great for the draft.

  38. avatar andrew says:

    what about drafting earl thomas

  39. avatar AKA....Drew says:

four or so concussions for Pool in 4 years of playing. Just dosent seem like the type of player we need to play safety in our system

If the guy could not knock himself out every year maybe….but with the NFL becoming more and more concerned about head injuries…..just a questionable move…..

But its for one year so we better draft a kid in the first 2 rounds now….. OLB,S, DL,OL,WR done

  40. avatar andrew says:

i think if we sign LT we should let leon walk for the second

  41. avatar Green Lantern "I WANT BERRY" says:

I was kinda warming up to the Idea of Rex Drafting Taylor Mays. Im curious if he can turn him into an at least average Coverage Safety.

  42. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Nice ….now we can sign Coles and Pool and Coles can have a game of who gets a concussion first…..

  43. avatar JOE C from CT says:

POOOL, CROMM and LLTTT! I am warming up my checkbook! MAKE IT HAPPEN MT!!!

  44. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

And if you have ever played football for any period of time, even if high school, especially if you played both ways, chances are you have had a concussion…and you probably didnt even know it

I got one so bad in college one time the trainers had to help me take my pads off, and my girlfriend had to help me get dressed the next morning. No bright lights and I would get sick to my stomach…

well on a brighter note…good signing

  45. avatar Dylan says:

The more players we sign in FA the better. The one thing that was missing from this team last year was quality depth. If we can enter the draft with no glaring holes, this team is going to be really talented and really deep.

  46. avatar JOE C from CT says:

DON’T BE STUPID GIVE UP THE FIRST AND GOOO GETT MARSHAL!!! NOWWW!!! FAT BOY!!!

  47. avatar jp losman says:

i can live with this. essentially we send out rhodes, get a 4th rd pick, brodney pool and save a boat load of money for our big guys.

pool ought to be about as productive as rhodes was last year.

  48. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

I totally agree Dylan…its a good move. Pool can step in and start at FS and he has proven that he can be at the very least a competent starter. If he stays healthy, the guy is a great athlete that could really thrive under Rex

Thats really all we need the guy to be, and if he can’t…hes done after one year

  49. avatar JOE C from CT says:

i take that back. This chess game is killing me. Where is my checkbook?

  50. avatar GANGGREEN says:

Just watched a video of NYJETS.com with Mike Pettite stating that Cromartie has freakish strength and ability.Pettite also stated that Cromartie can play receiver…With Poole a crossover who could play CB imagine the possibilities with Cromartie on offense too..Next year is going to be sweeeet…..

  51. avatar Brad says:

aka…drew- like your draft needs order, assessment- but I have a feeling with Rex loving CB’s, that a CB will be our 3rd or 4th pick!

  52. avatar JOE C from CT says:

    MARSHALL!!! MARSHALL!! MARSHALL!!!!

  53. avatar Aaron says:

Mangini.. 2010 Jets best Head Coach

  54. avatar JOE C from CT says:

    marshall!! MARSall!!!MARSHALLL!!!!

  55. avatar Brad says:

We are really in a great position to enter the draft- we have no major holes on the team. Think about it- who are we going to draft this year that will be an automatic starter on this team- start in the first game? The only position that we might think has a chance to start would be OLB, but we will be drafting a DE converting to the OLB role, and I doubt this person will be ready to start in the first game- even if it is Graham or Hughes! Other position- DE/DT like Odrick, but i think the coaching staff loves Devito and Pouha has really established himself and will probably play next to Jenkins at times.

  56. avatar JOE C from CT says:

Lt OR marshall UHHH give up the 1st

  57. avatar Daniel says:

Love this move. Pool is a solid player and one of verrry few bright spots on the Browns. I know he doesn’t have as big a name as Hollywood Rhodes, but he’s outproduced him the last couple of seasons and has a lot of room for improvement at age 25. I like this move a lot.

  58. avatar atrain says:

  60. avatar Flushing Boy says:

    GANGGREEN,

Wow, Cromartie playing CB and WR … maybe shortstop too while Reyes is out? Seriously, though, CB/WR would be pretty cool.

  61. avatar reality jet fan says:

Shouldnt we have superbowl already our gm never makes a bad move?

  62. avatar BigKatt says:

I’m not going to endorse this deal till i see the guy play in camp, but all signs point to this being a good deal. Like people have said, low risk, high reward. Obviously Rex OKed this deal, and if Rex likes the kid, i see no reason for me not to like him also. Getting a starting FS for only 1.3 mil is a pretty nice deal, and if it backfires he’ll be out the door next season. Hopefully this guy has a good work ethic and will to Florham Park ASAP.

  63. avatar Dylan says:

    reality jet fan,

I know, right? He is by far the most underrated GM in the NFL. Gholston was the only really bad move he has made here.

  64. avatar BigKatt says:

And Joe C, getting Marshall would be retarded. We don’t have the $ and we already have two #1 quality wideouts.

  65. avatar GP says:

He needs to talk to Johnny Olerud about keeping the ol’ noggin nice and safe. Too many concussions will end a career pretty quickly.

  66. avatar reality jet fan says:

    So where is the superbowl?

  67. avatar This is Mike Devito says:

how can you complain here? its just another guy to bring in the mix, this way they can rotate the safeties (pool, smith, digs) and hopefully it will turn out fine

  68. avatar Denis says:

don’t have much of an opinion on pool. he never looked great, but never looked bad either on a consistently terrible defense to begin with. on this jets defense, what’s he capable of? no clue …

  69. avatar HSA says:

I am going against the fans here but i really hope leon goes to the pats. A second is worth way more than what he can bring to the jets. the jets can draft Best with that or go safety or even DL. I really hope leon is signed by someone else

  70. avatar JetSetRadio says:

They may have just brought him in to play the nickle…who knows..that was his original position and would be less likely to be concused.. whatever it may be im sure his brother steered him in the rite way with brodney.

  71. avatar KenEB says:

The Jets have put themselves in a position to draft the best player available at #29, or trade down to accumulate additional picks in this extremely deep draft.

  72. avatar JJets says:

The Jets brought in Raiders linebacker Jon Alston for a visit on Thursday, The Star-Ledger has learned and the team confirmed.

Alston, a four-year veteran, wasn’t tendered by the Raiders, making him an unrestricted free agent who can sign with any NFL team. A former third-round pick out of Stanford by the Rams, he had 23 tackles last season in nine games, four starts, before going on injured reserve following a pair of concussions.

The Jets likely view him as a back-up outside linebacker and special teams performer.
    per hutch

  73. avatar nyjetsman says:

    why the pats

  74. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

reality jet fan- I cant tell if you are sarcastic on the internet but if you are being a dips#it right now…

    ARE U SERIOUS?

The guy took over a 4 win team in 06- In 4 years he has put together a team and coach that got within 30 mins of going to a Super Bowl…as far as a legend ever took this team while he was running it ( and Parcells blew with a MUCH better team than Rex had this year)

See my problem with you is you dont even know enough about Brodney Pool to even have an opinion…its just “where is my Super Bowl”…its like you quote from the Joe Benigno Guide to Being a Jet Fan…you have no thoughts of your own or what the Jets should have done instead…you just recite what you hear on WFAN

  75. avatar Give Leon The Damn Ball says:

dont know much about this guy, but i’m sure rex and pettine do since they saw him up close a number of times in the afc north. he must be a good player. hope he can stay healthy.

  76. avatar JetsFan4life says:

Joe C – only way we should go get Marshall is if we can trade him same day to Sea for pick #14 (as suggested several times over the past several days by that Ahole Florio)

  77. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    reality jet fan- Also

Its Tanny’s job to evaluate the team year by year, make the neccessary additions and subtractions, while trying to win now without sacrificing the team’s future

You would be hard pressed to find ANYONE around the NFL that will say that Mike T has done anything but a great job as Jets GM

Tanny doesnt play the games, he doesnt coach the team, so the guy cant win a Super Bowl by himself.

However, somewhere along the line you forgot that the Jets were trying to BUILD a winner and that there is no shame in not winning a Super Bowl 4 year into a GMs tenure when he has taken the team from the gutter and turned them onto the cusp of being a Super Bowl contender

Im a Yankee fan too, but just remember, you cant do it in baseball like you do in football so save the Yankee-comparison

  78. avatar Ok move says:

    He aint no Kerry Rhodes…..

we need a real bonafide number one safety…Pool is a backup

  79. avatar JetMetVet says:

Makes me sick to hear that that the Pats have 3 2nd round picks??? Especially this year, with the talent up front.

    Pats picks:

    1st Round (22nd Overall)
    2nd Round (Jaguars 44th Overall)
    2nd Round (Titans 47th Overall)
    2nd Round (53rd Overall)

I hope we can do some wheeling and dealing again with the Browns, if we need to.

  80. avatar Jon Presser says:

i like that cleveland has been reduced to our AAA squad

  81. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    ok move

Pool a backup? Really? Pool has started at BOTH FS and CB since 06 and was an early 2nd rd pick in 05

Check Kerry Rhodes numbers as compared to Pool’s in 09

    Rhodes- 63 tackles 0 sacks 3 INTS 16 games
    Pool- 50 tackles 1 sack 4 INTS 11 games

Seem Pool was a little more productive huh?

You miserable people wanna knock the move, give me something better then “ok move”…typical miserable Jets fans who knock the move only because others endorse it

  82. avatar BamBam says:

    Don’t draft Vernon Mays!!

  83. avatar rusty sanchez says:

hopefully the picture on top isnt how poole got his 3rd concussion then we have problems

  84. avatar Ok move says:

Eddie, I can have my OWN opinion without you trying to put me down

I didnt knock the move bc others endorsed it. Thank you very much. I call him a backup because he cant stay healthy. Next time you wanna lash out on someone do some exercises.

  85. avatar Brendan says:

They’re probably going to draft another safety, but I like the signing. It’s for one season at very little cost. There’s the potential that he thrives in this system and puts up good numbers. I’ve warmed to the idea of our corners being good enough that our safeties don’t have to be great in coverage. I wouldn’t mind a 2nd round safety like one of the two Jones boys, but Pool is solid.

When’s Joey Porter coming to the Big Apple?

  86. avatar SackDance99 says:

Good move, low risk and high reward. For the record, Pool’s agent disputes Cleveland’s claims about his concussion history (he says Pool has only 1 documented concussion) and he is only 25. If he doesn’t get concussed, he’s a steal. As for the draft, unless the Jets sign Porter, the biggest hole on defense is still pass rushing WILL/DE hybrid.

  87. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Ok move

Sure you can have your opinion…

But when you post it for all to see and it is wrong based on the FACTS I presented…I have the right also to state mine

Your arguement was weak and I wasnt refering to you alone -if you look above I was debating “reality jet fan” about the same thing.

I dont know what to tell you either grow some thicker skin or get your facts straight before you post falsehoods

BTW, Kerry Rhodes hasnt been the Kerry Rhodes that you are referring to since 06, for accuracy’s sake

  88. avatar jleonhard says:

I’m thiking about it this wway he can’t have a worse yea than kerry rhodes had and we were still the number 1 defense last year wit our safety underperforming so I do not see a downgrade even though I haven’t seen a lot of this guy

  89. avatar Le' Sean Roberts says:

Project safety later in the draft? If they’re there, then heck, draft them……..it’s a single year deal…..good safety?

  90. avatar Le' Sean Roberts says:

Wasn’t tendered by the Browns?…Its Holmgren and company, this dude suck if he wasn’t tendered. Even OAK knows when players suck………Javon Walker, etc…..well they made one of the dumbest move in a while with Fabian Washington.

  91. avatar Le' Sean Roberts says:

Marshal? What will we do with Braylon then? He was tendered you know.

  92. avatar Daniel says:

I really don’t see us getting Marshall. We run and play defense. We’re obviously VERY curious as to how good Braylon will be with a full year to work with Sanchez, evidenced by the 1st & 3rd round tenders we gave him. Marshall is well worth the 29th pick, but it doesn’t make sense financially should a capped season ever return.

We have guys we need to re-sign and frankly, I’d rather trade our 1st and an additional mid-round pick for a very good RB. Since I don’t think any top-tier RBs are on the market, so I think the best route to go is draft BPA and add a RB later in the draft.

Hell, I wouldn’t even mind a pass rusher in the 1st and a RB like Joe McKnight in the 2nd. I watched him at USC and with a little bit of coaching, the guy can be an excellent change-of-pace back.

  93. avatar Charlie D says:

    HEY GUYS,
DID ANYONE MENTION THAT POOL PLAYED FOR REX’S BROTHER ROB RYAN. REX HAD AN INSIDE “SCOOP” ON THE KID AND ROB PLAYS A SIMILAR TYPE OF DEFENSE AS REX. I THINK THAT IS A BIG REASON FOR GETTING POOL.

  94. avatar Shamik says:

LOL, I gotta say, if we win an SB next year, I think I’m going to go to Cleveland and spend a few bucks there in appreciation for all that they’ve done for us!

  95. avatar Matt M says:

    @JetMetVet

Don’t worry, the Pats have the Raiders 2011 first-rounder too.

  96. avatar mike s. says:

If this kid is better than Rhodes, why would Cleveland not tender him?

  97. avatar Ben Nevis says:

Bent and I and others covered this ground on another thread:

Pool’s stats are quite good. He’s a solid cover safety.

The one major concern is Pool’s history of concussions.

But as I said on another thread. now that we’ve traded for Pool, it’s highly unlikely that we’ll trade way up on the draft for Eric Berry, or trade up a bit for Earl Thomas.

Seems more likely now that we’ll draft a quality safety who falls to us in the second round, like Reshad Jones, for instance.

If we do pick up R Jones—and I hope we do—he’s a monster run stopper, a solid tackler, and the man can hit. So we could use him in tandem with Pool who can play center field like Rhodes, which isn’t RJ’s strength.

Anyway, the Pool signing is a low risk/high reward signing, and if he stays healthy, he can fill the hole left by Rhodes’ departure.

  98. avatar sunsetmusic says:

Very happy today! Solid pickup, excellent gamble. I am sure a few GM’s are thinking they would like to have Pool at 1.3 and 1 year. Happy the Jets moved quickly on thuis after the trade of KR.

Concussions are a scary issue , esp. In the NFL. That being said, this is the type of young talent you doooo take that chance on. Especially if he’s willing to take a 1 year deal with low in NFL standards contract. Bottom line Tanny will end up being able to play pokerface come draft time and that’s a HUUGGEE advantage. Esp when they finally sign Adalius or Porter. Although Pats are playing hard since they know he wants to go to the Jets. I think theu are hoping Jets sign Porter and no longer want AT…..and are waiting…..

  99. avatar jetmetvet says:

    @ Matt M

Thanks for the reminder on the Pats having the Raider’s #1 draft pick as well…

Sorry to have to bring this up, but can we get confirmation on the Pats picks ? Let me get this straight, they’ve got TWO #1′s and THREE #2′s ?

  100. avatar SoFlaJets says:

Brodney Pool in 2009 was in on 693 plays made 36 tackles had 4 INTs and had a 45.5 completion % against him

Kerry Rhodes in 2009 was in on 909 and made 50 tackles had 3 INTs and had a 66.7 completion % against him

  101. avatar Bent says:

SFJ – Good stats (although they moved the page, so the link doesn’t work any more!)

However, I’m not sure they can be directly compared. The numbers for catches and yards against refer to when the player catching the ball was either being covered man to man or was in that player’s area against a zone. They do not take into account when the CB was playing man and the safety was helping out deep, although the coverage ratings do.

Since Rhodes had a better overall grade in coverage, this suggests to me that he must have been better at roaming deep (because his other numbers against were inferior to Pool.) The fact Rhodes was apparently thrown at more perhaps suggest that Pool played deep more of the time, even though Rhodes spent most of his time doing that, until late in the season.

The higher average yards per catch also would suggest Pool was deeper than Rhodes on average.

The reason I think this is good is that, instead of having Rhodes play part of the time in the box and part deep and getting frustrated with playing deep because he can’t make as many play (which, as we saw, caused some errors), they can use Pool exclusively deep and Smith/Digs/Rookie in the box. Pool won’t be under the same pressure to make impact plays and can dedicate himself to playing a disciplined role.

The fact they’re likely to play exclusively man coverage with Cromartie on board will probably mean that the defense looks more like it did early in the season than in the playoffs, but I think that could free up Leonhard to be used in a more flexible manner.

As A Browns fan I wish him well.
We all hope he can stay healthy and avoid another concussion which could not only end his career but his life (he’s had many).
    Good luck and God speed.!

  104. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Dont love or hate it…..if he didnt have a concussion issue he would have been tendered and/or would have got a better deal than 1yr at 1.5 million. I dont care what he or his agent says.

This is a move that will get better depending on the next one. If a legit prospect is drafted then this move is a good one. if we ignore the safety position in the first 2 rounds. I dont like it.

  105. avatar Jetknut79 says:

Seems like a good deal to fill Rhodes spot. However, I would have liked to use that $$ instead on keeping TJ and then draft for a safety. Its a little dissapointing that we let TJ leave for all the work and stats he’s put up for us.

Digio, everyone is entitled to have an option and post an opion, but when you post things like “You miserable people…” you’re coming accross as an angry jackass.

    I meant to say “opinion”

  108. avatar nicko says:

decent move…..atleast we didnt give him much….but 4 concussions , doesnt sound promising ………..time to draft a pass rusher…….and id bring back Marques Douglas as welll….

  111. avatar NJets says:

Rob Ryan totally told Rex this guy is worth it. I trust the the Ryan brothers, they know what they are doing on defense.

  112. avatar MEL31602 says:

I dont know if this has been mentioned but Pool was the guy involved in that infamous play against the Browns a few years ago where a Baker catch at the end was ruled no TD because it was not considered a forceout. Pool was the one who made the supposed non-forceout on the play according to the Jets website.

  113. avatar brian311 says:

probabaly already discussed in the comments – but i assume this takes us out of the running for sharper, correct?

i like it – there was no way we were going into the season with smith/digs as a starting safety

  114. Obviously the concussion history worries me as I’m sure it does all of you.

SD99 mentioned above that Poole’s agent disputes the concussion history, saying he has had only 1 documented. This is the first I’ve heard of this and there’s a big difference between 1 and the 4 or 5 that I’ve been reading about.

If anyone has any more info on Poole’s concussions and what the actual # of documented is I’d be very interested to learn more. (I don’t know why they feel the need to write “documented”, it implies that there are many more that they know about but weren’t acknowledged. Or it implies that there may have been more that weren’t recognized as concussions, which I assume is the same for all players) As someone pointed out, the fact that he wasn’t tendered makes it seem likely that the # is closer to 4 or 5 than 1.

  115. and while “expert” is not gender specific, I am not pretending to be a woman!

  116. avatar starz31 says:

Mel…i remember that play and that still irks me to this day. It was a blatant force out and was the driving force to the rule-change.

  117. avatar BubbyBrister/shovelpass says:

Whew! Thanks bent – I can still go commando, then…

    :-)

Does anyone else wonder why the Browns didn’t take advantage of this whole Low risk/High reward opportunity with Pool, especially in light of the fact that Rob Ryan’s defense is similar to Rex’s? Something doesn’t add up to me on this, and i can’t put my finger on it…

It has to be more than just concussions.

  118. avatar originalJetFan says:

Looking at the Browns roster with Elam(a mangini favorite and Adams with experienced backups , i have they probably didn’t feel the reward/risk meant as much to them as other positions. Still a risk, but what did we lose, and if he gets close to his best….thats some reward.

  119. avatar BubbyBrister/shovelpass says:

thanks OJF – that makes some sense.

But , gun to your head, who would you rather have as your safety..Elam or Pool? No brainer to me…Pool.

  120. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

BC..Thats all well and good.I dont care what you think I come across as to you as

And not for nothing, but some of the people who post on this site knock everything the Jets do and call me a “cheerleader” because I generally agree with this regime’s moves. It works both ways

Its not my fault I posted facts and you and “ok move” fem’d out and got all Lifetime original movie on me

    call me a wambulance

    NYCPE,

    Here’s the AP wire:

    http://www.startribune.com/sports/vikings/87420607.html?elr=KArksi8cyaiU9PmP:QiUiacyKUUs

“He is healthy and ready to go,” Dogra [Pool's agent] said. “Despite reports to the contrary, Brodney only had one known concussion. He is excited about the opportunity to play for the Jets and making a contribution to the No. 1 defense in the NFL.”

  122. avatar Led says:

Isn’t Pool the guy top rated safety that Andre Maddox said couldn’t tackle back before the 05 draft? Funny that we drafted Maddox and now have Pool.

I didn’t like Rhodes trade but this signing helps make up for it. If healthy, Pool gives us 90% of what Rhodes gave us. Health is a risk but with a 1 year deal, it’s not a big risk. I agree with the comment above that this pick up puts us in BPA land in the draft, which is where you want to be.

  123. avatar section113 says:

Rhodes supporters – did you watch him closely last year? I can think of at least one reason why he didn’t have a concussion – contact is required. I almost threw up on the guy sitting in front of me 2 or 3 times a game watching him wiff on ‘tackels’ He looked more like a matador to me than a safety.
