Jets Trying to Lock the Door on LaDainian

by Bassett on March 12th, 2010 at 3:13 pm

Thomas George of AOL/FanHouse has a great report of all the things that the Jets are doing today to convince LaDainian to sign today, beyond the itinerary, here’s the juicy details from a source inside the team.

… a Jets executive source said, when egos become involved in acquiring a player, the Jets will be hard to beat.

“We want this guy, and when we want a player, we typically go get the player,” the Jets source said. “We have every intention to get him signed before he leaves.”

But Tomlinson has already told the Jets that he wants to think things over, travel back home to visit with his wife, LaTorsha, and pray over all options.

The Jets are praying they can convince him to sign now.

And the courting, the convincing is in full swing.

The Jets are willing to give Tomlinson a two-year contract equal to the two-year, $5 million-deal they would not give to departed running back Thomas Jones, now with Kansas City. They may be willing to move upwards to $3.5 million a year for Tomlinson in a contract loaded with incentives.

Schottenheimer is doing what he can to keep the Jets’ interest in Tomlinson keen. He coached Tomlinson in San Diego and has told the franchise that Tomlinson is a model citizen, an important factor to have on the field and in the locker room and a dependable player. He is reminding Tomlinson that since the Jets and Chargers offensive systems and terminologies are similar, the learning curve for the player will be smaller than that with other potential suitors.

“We’ve done the homework and he still has that burst when he is on the perimeter, and though his instincts as a back used to be 10 times better than everyone else, it is still a couple of times better than most,” a Jets executive source said. “He would give us that change of pace back after you pound it and pound it with Shonn. If LaDainian stays healthy, you put him in some of the same situations our other backs were in last year with this offensive line and you will see even bigger production.

“I know he wants to win a championship and that factors heavily into his decision. We think we can accomplish that together.”

Doesn’t make any sense to me. Why get rid of TJ and sign a worse player for the same money? I know he’s got name cache, but thats no reason to sign him.

  2. avatar Organized Chaos says:

Raise your mouse if you surprised. Didn’t think so…..
This is Tanny’s game, get you and not let you leave. This may work and I’m getting excited even though I don’t know how much LT has LefT

  3. avatar Ben Nevis says:

What would sicken me here is if Tomlinson gets paid as much money as—or more money than—Thomas Jones is getting from KC.

If that were to happen, it would mean that for the same price, or maybe even less, we could have had a back—TJ—in much better shape than LT and who last year had:

—TWICE as many yards as LT:
    TJ: 1,400
    LT: 730

—a much better YPC than LT:
    TJ: 4.2
    LT: 3.3

    —more TDs than LT:
    TJ: 14
    LT: 12

—and much less wear-and- tear mileage than LT:
    TJ: 2,500 career touches
    LT: 3,500 career touches

And for all of you who said that TJ’s “pride” was what stopped him from taking the same money from the Jets that he’s getting from KC:

As Drew pointed out on another thread, THE JETS REFUSED TO MATCH THE TJ OFFER FROM KC.

That’s right, this morning on WFAN, MIKE T HIMSELF COULD NOT DENY THAT THE JETS REFUSED TO MATCH THE KC OFFER.

  4. avatar Jake says:

    Shamik,

LT is better then Jones. Look at the offensive line the Chargers have had in the last few seasons.. terrible.

Coming to the best rushing attack in the league, and the best defense in the league, I think this move would be one of a few needed to put us in the Super Bowl.

LT to the Jets, to me, is a no brainer. Yes, he was impressed by Minnesota, but again, who knows where they’ll be next year. No clue on Favre coming back, and if Favre doesn’t come back, they will not contend next year. He should choose here just because he knows everything is legit here, every position is set in stone, and they need like 2 more pieces to put them over the top.

  5. avatar levi says:

well although I dont think we should go for LT I guess I better get my mind around this Tanny gets what or who he wants.

  6. avatar AJ says:

    Pointless!

  7. avatar LAJetsFan says:

This seems like they view LT as a better complement to Greene. TJ and Greene are very similar, LT brings a different skillset

  8. avatar E. Weeks says:

    levi is spot on,

Whatever Tannenbaum wants, he will do all he can to get … like it or not.

  9. avatar Bkkilla says:

sd throws the ball as much as anyone and the jets run the ball more than anyone, lt will b good behind our o-line

  10. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    E. Weeks-

Mike T may get whatever, or whoever, he wants.

But that doesn’t mean that we have to like it.

Or think it’s make any friggin sense.

  11. avatar Brendan says:

    Ben,

The Chargers had the WORST run blocking O-line in football last year and it wasn’t even really that close. Flip TJ and LT last season and they’re #’s are probably flipped.

  12. avatar JetMetVet says:

Rumors are flying everywhere that Favre may not be coming back…. This should help the Jets push.

  13. avatar starz31 says:

    Ben,
the only thing on there that makes me pause is the career touches. thats it. What he did last year you cannot compare to TJ. Two totally different scenarios. The only thing you take from that comparison is that TJ may have the potential for a bigger letdown. why? because he’s coming off career high in carries. Thats a BIG factor for someone his age.
You know Curtis Martin did the year after his career high in carries and yards? He had a BIG letdown. Got hurt…and only played in 12 games before having to essentially retire. Curtis did have more career mileage at the time…but the year-after effect is a big factor for a RB in their early 30′s.

Personally, I don’t really want LT or TJ. I don’t think they have much left. TJ, I def don’t think has much left. He may have had 1400 yards last season, but many backs in the league could’ve had 1400 yards w/ this team last year.

  14. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Jake-

In 2007, the Jets had a crap O line, and TJ still gained over 1,000 yards rushing, with a YPC of 3.7.

Last year, LT had 730 yards, with a YPC of 3.3.

  15. avatar Led says:

3.5 per for 2 years is CRAZY. Maybe if a huge chunk was incentives I could stomach it, but this has Art Monk and Ronnie Lott written all over it.

  16. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    starz-

You write: “the only thing on there that makes me pause is the career touches.”

Well, starz, that’s a huge concern:

LT has had about 1,000 more career touches than TJ.

  17. avatar CVega says:

Guys last year many of us said that TJ was declining…he couldn’t hit the whole fast enough…he was loosing his vision..then everybody was upset that we let him go. LT still has some pop…yes he had lower numbers the TJ, but he was on a team that didn’t have as good of an O-Line as we do, they threw much more then we did, and LT didn’t get the number of touches that TJ did. I think if we get him for around what TJ got we’re in good shape with Greene, LT, Leon (if he comes back…probable) and possibly a Stud from later rounds of a deep draft for grooming…

  18. avatar EastSide says:

I wonder if this says something about Schottenheimer’s influence within the organization?

  19. avatar GP says:

I bet LT’s still crying under his tinted visor after War Machine Greene’s rip of his td celebration.

  20. avatar Jake says:

Yes, but a better O-Line will help LT. Not to mention, he had a better season in 07 the TJ did.

  21. avatar Killa says:

R u guys kidding me LT is better than TJ…and we all love TJ, but just watch LT running behind this line….he will look wayyyy better than TJ did

  22. avatar matt says:

Ben Nevis i agree but this would b a psl move not a knock on jones plus they are taking a chance that our O-line will make him good again

  23. avatar Tom B says:

Ben, the jets did not have a “crap” offensive line in any season that TJ had played for us.

On no planet is TJ on his best day as good as LDT. The chargers had 3 of 5 starting linemen out for the season last year. I wonder if that effects his rushing totals.

  24. avatar EastSide says:

    CVega,
You’ll be hard pressed to find any RB over 30 that has a 1000+ yard season after a sub-1000 yard season. I imagine LT took a lot of abuse behind that poor oline and if our playoff game was any indication, LT wasn’t faster than any of our players on defense not on the dline.

  25. avatar Jim says:

Ben – you fail to mention in 2007 TJ had ONE touchdown in 16 games. LT had 12 last year. You also fail to mention that in 2007 TJ had 310 carries and LT had 220 last year. Further more, TJ avg’d 3.6 YPC that year, not 3.7. If you’re going to give stats, make sure you’re giving the whole picture.

  26. avatar starz31 says:

    Ben,

you shouldn’t have stopped reading after that sentence.

And you gotta stop comparing different players from different years in different scenarios. Especially when the #of carries varies big time. Its apples and oranges.

  27. avatar starz31 says:

    That’s right Jim.

  28. avatar Marc says:

What about versatility? Jones lacks pass-catching ability. He’s a hard worker, a leader, and a beast. However, by watching Greene, you can see that Jones doesn’t hit holes hard. He doesn’t make moves or make something out of nothing. LT has all of these skills, and like everyone’s saying, he played behind a terrible run-blocking line.

I like the signing, but at the right price.

  29. avatar Chachi says:

I look at it as Greene is the RB that will pound the ball up the middle, Washington is the back that will cut the corners and LT is a little of both. To me it seems well balanced, however I am a big TJ fan.
EITHER WAY, WE ARE GOING TO WIN THE SUPER BOWL in 2011!!

  30. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    matt-

    You may be right.

Even those fans who don’t really know anything about football know LT’s name.

If the argument is which back—LT or TJ—is going to sell more PSLs, you can’t really dispute that, I guess. It’s LT.

But if the argument is which back—LT or TJ—would do more to help the Jets win, I think that answer is pretty clear as well. It’s TJ, hands down.

  31. avatar Jetfighterman99 says:

Listen, it is no skin off our noses if we get LT! I agree with many that his production will be better with our O-line. I have a feeling that TJ was hurt during the end of last season and the playoff’s. If Green doesn’t go down we win that game against the Colts. We were driving and chewing them up when he went down. TJ came in and we go nothing from him. But who is to say that the Jets front office doesn’t know something we don’t. Also no Charger running back did crap last year and you cannot put that on LT!

Give LT a shot! Maybe something really special here in NY. Our O-line is only going to get better!

  32. avatar starz31 says:

Tom, To be fair, our O-line was not good in 2007. Not having a QB hurt. But not providing pass-protection really destroyed any chance Clemens or Pennington could produce.

  33. avatar EastSide says:

    Tom B,
    How quickly we forget:
2007, TJ’s first year: the man ran behind a line manned by Adrien Clarke and Anthony Clement. That he broke 1000 yards is nothing short of a miracle.

  34. avatar PA Matt says:

Also, getting LT will allow us to potentially deal Leon (who is 28 years old with a broken leg) and use that 2nd Rd pick in a stacked draft.

  35. avatar SackDance99 says:

I don’t want LT for the same reason I didn’t want TJ…they’re at the end of the line in their careers. But, comparing TJ and LT is really useless. The Jets have the best run-blocking OL in football and, in particular, the Jets are very strong between the tackles. Faneca is up there with John Hannah as one of the greatest run-blocking LG’s in NFL history. So, it’s basically impossible to predict what LT would’ve done behind the Jets OL. Plus, LT is a master at following his blockers, one of the great pass-catching RBs in NFL history and, IMO, the best RB at scoring TDs that I’ve ever seen…he seems to grab the goal line like a hungry pit bull grabs a pork chop. So, the talk that TJ, based purely on numbers is BETTER than LT, is an incredibly bold statement. When it’s all said and done, the only way TJ can get to Canton is to buy a ticket and then he can look at LT’s statue. Let’s all try to remember that LT is one of the 10 best RBs in NFL history. I don’t think he has much left in the tank, but Schotty thinks so, and if he’s healthy and willing to take a reduced role in the offense, I have no reason to believe that he won’t be as good, if not better, than TJ in the same role.

  36. avatar bilal says:

Ben- I’m against signing LT too but not because of TJ. Since you are pulling up numbers why dont you pull up TJ’s numbers running behind the best offensive line in football in the playoffs in comparison to Shonn Greene??

When the jets were swapping drives between the two you almost knew that when TJ was in there- it was gonna result in a punt. I dont get how all the TJ supporters ignore his pathetic performance in the playoffs. He didnt even average 3 yards a carry!

  37. avatar originalJetFan says:

Folks, check TJ’s stats over the last 9 games, especially if you take out one or two long runs it was way down. LT, with the benefit of the Jets line, with less carries and fresher legs , and as a pass receiving threat is a better option than TJ, who got old very fast the last 1/2 of 2009.

  38. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Tom B-

You write: “Ben, the jets did not have a ‘crap’ offensive line in any season that TJ had played for us.”

Sorry, Tom, but in 2007, our O line was absolutely crap.

  39. avatar bilal says:

Eastside- he broke 1000 yards because he was given 310 carries! He only manged to find the endzone during the last game of the season. I dont remember people going crazy of TJ after that season.

  40. avatar deuce4417 says:

ok say he does not leave nad has a contract. what does that do for our draft?……..very interesting situation thats for sure

  41. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    bilal-

I really don’t want to revisit the TJ/Shonn debate again. We’ve been over that ground over and over and over and over again.

What I will say is this:

    1. If you were opposed to us signing both TJ and LT, then at least you’re consistent.

    2. If Mike T and Rex thought that we could go into 2010 with just Shonn in the backfield, then why are they trying to sign LT?

  42. avatar Brendan says:

    Ben,

It is possible to be in favor of cutting Tj and signing LT without being a hypocrite. TJ’s old deal was worth $6 mil, LT’s would be 1/2 that.

  43. avatar Shadetree says:

I think LT will be a better fit for the system. Guys hes not going to get the bulk of the carries Greene will. If you had to pick the better athlete and playmaker its LT hands down. Were talking about 3rd down back and LT said hes cool w/ that he knows hes not the man anymore.

  44. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Sack-

You write on another thread: “I’ll be consistent here [regarding TJ & LT]. It’s not just LT’s age that bothers me, it’s his touches. . . .it’s been documented that RB’s decline after 2,800 ‘touches’ meaning career carries and receptions. . . . LT has a whopping 3,525 touches!!!!”

    Just for the record, Sack:

TJ has a total of about 2,500 touches (including receptions).

That’s about 300 LESS THAN THE 2,800 CUT-OFF POINT YOU CITE.

  45. avatar deuce4417 says:

oh by the way JONES IS A CHIEF NOW PEOPLE, let it go for god sakes. he was a money grubbing ego freak

  46. avatar Lonnie G says:

I’m surprised to hear that the Jets wouldn’t have matched KC’s deal to TJ or they wouldn’t offer this deal to TJ. I would rather have kept TJ than get LT. LT has declined more than TJ has. You’re telling me you guys would prefer LT over TJ RIGHT NOW?

  47. avatar PA Matt says:

Even if they have the same cost, they’re completely different players. Like Randy Moss and Wes Welker. Greene and TJ were similar backs. Leon and LT are similar backs. Choose one from each category… that’s what Trader Mike is doing.

  48. avatar Lonnie G says:

Plus, TJ was under contract to receive $6 mill in 2010. Why would he come back and accept half the money? He has too much pride for that.

  49. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Brendan-

According to Thomas George of AOL/FanHouse (cited above by Bassett), the Jets are offering LT a “two-year contract equal to the two-year, $5 million-deal they would not give to departed running back Thomas Jones, now with Kansas City. They may be willing to move upwards to $3.5 million a year for Tomlinson. . .”

As Drew reported on another thread (and as I repeated above), THE JETS REFUSED TO MATCH THE TJ OFFER FROM KC.

This morning on WFAN, MIKE T HIMSELF COULD NOT DENY THAT THE JETS REFUSED TO MATCH THE KC OFFER.

  50. avatar Shadetree says:

I also think that Leon is getting major interest from other teams. Mike T will not match an offer take the 2nd round pick and run…

  51. avatar Jetfighterman99 says:

If anyone thinks that LT will just be 3rd down in New York you didn’t watch football last year. They will rotate all 3 backs whoever they get. Would be great to see if LT can get past the line of scrimmage and show what he can do. Also a pass out of the backfield isn’t out of the question and another safety valve for Sanchez to dump the ball too!

  52. avatar bilal says:

If they still think LT has something left to be a decent backup, which I dont, he brings something different to the table than TJ does. The problem with TJ is that he was a very small power RB. The only thing you can say TJ does better than Shonn Greene is goaline carries but thats only because Greene hasnt had the opportunity yet. LT brings a pass catching option, which makes me question what they are thinking wth Leon.

  53. avatar jkjet64 says:

I said it before and I’ll say it again. Get a new RB in the draft. There is no way TJ or LT is worth that money. Save the money and give it to our core. Get an RB in the 4th rd. Please!!!!

  54. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    bilal-

You write: “LT brings a pass catching option, which makes me question what they are thinking wth Leon.”

    I agree.

And if we let Leon go, then I’m gonna be really pissed.

  55. avatar SackDance99 says:

    Ben,

You didn’t add in TJ’s playoff carries and receptions, he is at 2,700 and he’s a year older than LT. It’s the combination of (1) age, (2) overall carries, and (3) 2009 workload. TJ’s heavy workload last season may have ended his usefulness as a back and it sure looked that way in the playoffs when he had a sub-3 YPC. At least LT, because of various injuries, hasn’t had such recent stress on his aging body. I don’t want either TJ or LT. But, if you’re asking me who could be better in 2010, then my answer is LT because he’s not coming off of the type of pounding that TJ took last season. Also, you have to concede that LT is far superior to TJ as a receiver. So, he might also be more useful in the offense.

  56. I’m real curious what this signing would mean in terms of the team’s view of Leon. Do we need Leon and LT on the same team? Assuming that LT would stay for 2 years (big assumption I know), Leon would then be 30, albeit with many, many fewer touches.
I’m just wondering if the signing of LT would mean the end of Leon. I would want another younger, between the tackles guy to back up Greene in the event he gets hurt. If Greene were to get injured, our ground & pound would be LT & Leon? Seems risky to me. Do they have a back door deal made with another team that if they get LT, the other team could sign Leon for the tender amount and the Jets wouldn’t match, thus getting a 2nd round pick?

  57. avatar jetsfan1974 says:

LT running behind a zone blocking scheme makes sense.

  58. avatar Shadetree says:

Ben as much as i love Leon you really dont know what your going to get. That compound fracture is hard to come back from. I remember Napolean Macallum had that(MNF) and he was never the same. Although both backs are totally different youd be going into the season with an unproven second year guy and someone recovering from major injury.

  59. avatar bilal says:

    Ben-

A second rounder for Leon isnt a bad option, of course if that team isnt the patriots. I really dont see the Jets allowing Leon to go to any team in the AFC east especially not the Pats. If LT is signed- be prepared to see him go. The Jets will probably then draft a RB late in the draft and pick up a 3rd option elsewhere.

  60. avatar jvsvn says:

This would definitely be a high risk signing based on the price and LT’s production and attitude the last couple of years. Also, it could mean the end for Leon as well. In fact, their interest in LT (much more than I would have expected) may reflect their true feelings about Leon’s status. If they sign LT, I bet they let Leon walk for a 2nd round pick. With a first and 2 second rounders, god only knows what scenario Tanny might pull off on draft day.

  61. avatar Shadetree says:

I wouldnt be surprised a team lowball the jets for Leon and be gone for around 3-4 mill

  62. avatar jetsfan1974 says:

I’d rather have LT running screens than Thomas Jones. Jones can’t make it to the edge anymore, too. All of Jones yards come running between the tackles. But Shawn Greene can do that to. Shawn Greene just can’t catch. But also look at the blocking schemes we use. When you’re running zone blocking schemes, it’s all about vision, and LT still has great vision.

  63. avatar brian311 says:

why would we give this guy a 2 year deal – then when we inevitably cut him after this season we have dead money on the 2011 cap? i dont get it. for the record, i am against signing LT, but if we do, it shoudl be for a one year deal so there is no 2011 cap implications.

Mr T needs to take advantage of the uncapped year, not screw it up

  64. avatar SackDance99 says:

I think everyone is over-estimating what Leon’s role should be in this offense. He’s not a ground and pound/between the tackles RB. He’s a situational back. 3rd down, obvious passing downs, 2-minute drills, etc. LT will spell Shonn, be the short-yardage/goal line specialist and could spell Leon in obvious passing situations, especially if the blitz is getting to Sanchez because he’s a better blocker than Leon. Greene will be the feature back. IMO, LT would give the Jets flexibility if either Leon or Shonn gets injured. After Leon got injured last season, the Jets didn’t have a 3rd down back/situational RB. Like I said, I don’t want LT, but I really don’t think he’s a threat to Leon because he and Leon will have different roles.

  65. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Sack-

If you’re right that TJ has had 2,700 touches, factoring in the playoffs, then that’s still about 800 LESS TOUCHES than LT.

It’s also 100 touches less than your cut-off of 2,800.

Which is also about the number of touches our back-up RB—Shonn–had last year.

As for conceding that LT is a superior receiver than TJ, yes, I agree. But if this is the big reason that we’re bringing LT in, then (as bilal pointed out above) what does that mean in terms of keeping Leon?

Do you think if we sign LT, then Leon is gone?

And if so, do you approve?

  66. avatar bernie says:

If anyone thinks this is football-related, you haven’t been paying attention the last 2 years. LT = PSLs. There is no other explanation for why the Jets seem so fixated on him. He’s over the hill.

  67. avatar andrew says:

LT with this o-line can easily get 4.0 ypc like TJ

  68. avatar bilal says:

I think most Jets fans love what Leon has brought to our team and we all see the potential he has- but if Leon was on another team and we we’re interested in signing a player with his career stats and recent major leg injury for a 2nd round pick- alot of us would be upset!

  69. avatar jvsvn says:

Dwight Lowery better be ready to give up that 21 again.

  70. avatar brightfuture says:

STOP TALKING ABOUT JONES HE WANTED OUT THEY DIDNT JUST KICK HIM TO THE CURB FOR THE HELL OF IT!!!!!!!!!!

  71. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Very good point jetfan1974- the Jets run a TON of zone run blocking up front.

LT has MUCH better vision than TJ does at the RB position.
In fact, LT’s vision is talked about as “legendary”.

I loved TJ’s toughness but when he would fall down trying to cut in the backfield, it didnt really help

Not for nothing but that Charger o line was a soft up front as Ive seen on a 12 win team. They were a finesse line, the exact opposite of ours.

Hate to see TJ go but it seems the Jets are pretty convinced that LT can help this offense…that has to count for something

  72. avatar bilal says:

Bernie – you are so right! I mean what good has Kris Jenkins, Calvin Pace, Faneca, Woody, Scott, Leonhard and Sanchez (via trade) realy done for us on the field! Clearly all moves for PSL’s and not to really improve our team.

  73. avatar Brendan says:

    Ben,

Drew was reporting based off of what Tanny DIDN’T say. Not what he did say. Drew, as did a bunch of other people, speculated that is what happened. Until someone says it that was directly involved, I’ll hold off believing that Tanny turned down TJ. And you know what? He should have. TJ wouldn’t renegotiate, then left, found out he wasn’t worth the money he thought he was on the open market, then wanted back in. Sorry pal, you did this to yourself.

  74. avatar Brendan says:

    Ben,

LT signing here has nothing to do with Leon. They’re different backs. LT can be a good receiver, but he’s not a scat-back which Leon is.

  75. avatar Cip says:

Forget jones. he’s gone now. We need another rb to run with greene. Might as well be LT

  76. avatar SackDance99 says:

    Ben,

My Leon comment is “awaiting moderation” so I don’t want to repeat it, but I don’t believe LT’s signing would have any bearing on Leon. They’re different types of RBs and would have different roles.

Look, I agree that LT has all the warning signs of an RB that is well over the normal amount of touches that an NFL RB can have in his career. But, TJ’s tank is, IMO, also empty. His overall touches are lower, but he got the bulk of his touches as an older RB. So, IMO, TJ’s last 1500 touches were much worse than LT’s. That’s why I think LT, who is a year younger and has not had that heavy a workload the past 2 seasons, might be better off from a pure physical standpoint. From a talent standpoint, LT is at a different level than TJ. He’s just a much better RB. So, even if their tanks were equally empty or LT’s somewhat emptier, LT would still get the nod because of his vastly superior talent.

  77. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    bernie-

Im not buying it. People in New York are not that stupid. This isnt LT from 5 years ago. We all know what he did last year.

It just comes down to whether the Jets think that with their o-line, which they have spent money and #1 picks on, can help LT be more productive than he was in San Diego.

No one here has even entertained the idea of LT even starting for this team…only to help take some of load off of Shonn Greene’s back

  78. avatar bilal says:

Brandon – I agree they are different but I think it does affect Leon because they would truly only have one “ground and pound” type runner. I assume they would want another physical RB to back up Greene.

  79. avatar bilal says:

Eddie- I agree I hate when people point to PSLs when they dont agree with a move. If it were all about PSL and making the fans want to come they wouldnt have cut the fan favorite Thomas Jones that everyone loves or trade one of its recognizeable faces in Kerry Rhodes.

  80. avatar Dylan says:

I don’t think the Jets want LT for the sole purpose of selling PSLs, but it definitely wont hurt that cause. LT is one of the biggest names in football and a future Hall of Famer. Look how much attention the Jets got when they signed Favre.

  81. avatar deuce4417 says:

what the hell is wrong with all of you still talking about jones!? you really need to let it go. whats wrong, did you all by the TJ bed sheets so now your pissed you can’t snuggle up with him all night let it go and move on

  82. avatar jvsvn says:

Could someone please explain how signing LT would make up for the devastating losses of Marques Murrell and Wallace Wright.

  83. avatar deevee says:

When will people realize with this team its not about the running back, its our OFFENSIVE LINE!

To compare Thomas Jones’ number with LT is interesting but how about you compare that horrible SD Offensive line with ours?

No contest. Jets O-LINE is the answer, thats why TJ was allowed to walk. That’s why Shonn Greene “emerged”.

That’s like saying Britney Spears writes her own music…nope she has someone do it for her, all she does is go on stage and lip sync.

Did I just compare Britney Spears to TJ? Sorry about that.

  84. avatar Johnny Reefer says:

bring him in, what could it hurt, lets see if a future hall of famer can produce a bit.

if he does great, if not then w/e.

I was literally pissed off in the playoffs every time Jones was in the game.

Take away the that buffalo game and the 2 big runs in Houston and he wasn’t even close to being a productive in the first half of the season as you guys think. Plus we ran the ball so much HE BETTER have gotten the yards.

It not like it changes the fact that he is gone. so please, if we get LT, root for the dude. maybe he will shock you.

  85. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

bilal-so true man. Everyone knows what LT is now. We are not that stupid.

It just boils down to whether the Jets FO thinks that LT’s skill set can add a dimension that maybe Shonn or Leon cannot presently

  86. avatar SackDance99 says:

Sure, LT is a recognizable name, but the Vikings were also a final 4 team and they’re pursuing LT, too. Also, each team is pursuing LT strictly as a back up in the hope of solidifying their running games in order to make a Super Bowl run. So, I don’t see this as a “PSL move.” Getting Favre was a whole different situation. Not only is Favre arguably the most popular player in the NFL, but also he plays the most pivotal position AND was going to start. I don’t think that if the Jets sign LT his jersey will become the no. 1 jersey sold in the NFL as was Favre’s Jets jersey.

  87. avatar Bent says:

brian311 – I’m sure they won’t have any signing bonus money in the contract, which will mean there is no 2011 cap hit if he is cut.

Sack – comment approved. What is it with sPam and Fridays?

Hey, at least they’re trying to spend money. Where’s nikolas?

  88. avatar bilal says:

jvsvn- its a ashame isnt it- i gotta retire my #94 jersey now.

  89. avatar frustratedjetfan says:

Bottom line for me is that LT had almost as many TD’s last year as TJ (12 vs 14) with HALF as many yards and not half as good an offensive line. That means he’s more dangerous (i.e., has a better chance of going all the way) each time he carries the ball.

I really liked TJ in the locker room and strongly believe he’ll be missed, but LT will give us more scoring ability & versatility from the line. He’ll also be a better backup if SG gets hurt. Remember that the running game was non-existent when we lost SG against Indy. If TJ had anything left, injuries and all, that would’ve been the time to show it. – You bust a gut (no matter what it takes) when you’re 30 minutes from the Super Bowl. Case closed.

That being said, I don’t think we’ll get him.

  90. avatar SackDance99 says:

    jvsvn,

Are you being sarcastic? Murrell was not in the Jets’ defensive rotation and was often deactivated. He was just a spare part. And, while I liked Wallace Wright, Rex obviously didn’t want to keep a guy who was just a special teams ace and not in the offensive or defensive rotation. IMO, neither guy will be missed.

  91. avatar jvsvn says:

It’s not over yet bilal. Maybe Lowery will refuse to give up 21 and LT will wear 94.

  92. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Sack-

I guess this won’t come as a surpise to anyone—especially you—but I have to disagree. Yes, I think that LT in his prime was a better RB than TJ in his prime.

But when you tell me you think in 2010, signing LT is better than signing TJ, well, I have to question the consistency of your argument, Sack.

Thread after thread after thread, Sack, you argued about the importance of YPC. And LT’s YPC last year (3.3) was not only much worse than TJ’s, it was also worse—much worse—than the YPC of Willie Parker, Mike Bell, Larry Johnson, Brian Westbrook, and even Justin Fargas.

Also, on another thread, you pin your entire argument against signing either TJ and LT on the 2,800 career-touch cut-off.

And you yourself point out (with many exclamation marks) that LT has had over 3,500 career touches.

That’s 700 more career touches than your cut-off, Sack.

You also acknowledge that TJ has had LESS THAN 2,800 career touches—at least 100 carries less.

But then you come up with a caveat—as to why LT’s touches don’t really count—that negates the whole backbone of your own argument.

I think when you base your entire argument against signing one RB (TJ) on his YPC and his career touches, you would then have to make the SAME argument against another RB (LT) who had an even LOWER YPC, and an even HIGHER—WAY HIGHER–number of career touches.

  93. avatar Andre D says:

I’ve had zero problem with getting rid of TJ. Awesome dude, reaped the benefits of a solid o-line and did the best he could. But if he wasn’t running through a huge whole he always ran into someones back and he went down like a feather.

Not that I expect an LT in his prime, but same money or more than TJ’s I’ll be happy with LT especially being there’s not much more we can do in regards to free agency.

  94. avatar Brendan says:

Ben, SD had the worst run blocking offensive line by a wide margin. Put TJ behind that line and he has a 2007 type year.

  95. avatar SackDance99 says:

    Bent,

So, where are you on this debate? LT wouldn’t have been my first choice, but if Schotty is driving this bus, maybe it’s a better move than it would appear to be at first blush.

  96. avatar jvsvn says:

    Sackdance — lighten up.

  97. avatar Green Lantern "I WANT BERRY" says:

AGAIN LT Played For A PASS FIRST Team Behind A BAD Run Blocking Line and He was the backup. TJ Was behind the BEST Running O-Line of A RUSH FIRST Offense As a Starter.
Stop with The Comparisons they are unfair.

  98. avatar jkjet64 says:

    Ben,

Are you secretly Thomas Jones in disguise infiltrating this site???

  99. avatar bilal says:

Green Lantern – While you made some valid points LT was definitely not the backup last year. 223 carries opposed to 93 carries for Sproles. Do a little research at least.

Sack- are you serious? Wallace Wright is arguably one the best 3 jets players on the roster last year.

  100. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    jkjet64-

LOL. It’s gonna take me about 40 years to make what TJ will make this year alone.

  101. avatar jkjet64 says:

    ditto

  102. avatar Bent says:

Sack – I have the same reservations about him as many others do, although the success or failure of the running game will depend on the line, Greene and Sanchez more than it will the number two.

If they get LDT I’m sure he will have a similar impact to what Jones would have had. Even if that’s just 3 yards per carry and moving the chains in short yardage situations, that plays a role, especially when the offense has many other playmaking options.

  103. avatar AKA....Drew says:

For the record I am not for LT coming on board. I feel the guy has no heart and has never shown up in a big spot. I dont feel all of a sudden he is gojng to come in and be a great 3rd down back….I feel he has shown time and time again that he is not a team leader or a good mentor for the younger players.

It took P Rivers 1 year to become the leader that LT was supposed to be his whole career there.

If he comes on board I will support him but as of right now i am not that thrilled he is even in the building

  104. avatar bernie says:

bilal and Eddie: one word: Favre.

  105. avatar SackDance99 says:

    Ben,

I started off by saying that it just isn’t possible to compare LT to TJ off of last season because the Jets OL is so superior. Once you accept that premise, then the rest of my argument falls into place. I believe that TJ and LT have equally empty tanks. The reason is that the bulk of LT’s touches came early in his career when his young early 20s body could handle it better. TJ, on the other hand, got the bulk of his carries over the past 5 years. IMO, that workload is worse for an RB the later the bulk of his touches come in his career. And, TJ did not have an over 3 YPC in 5 of his last 6 games, while Greene was much better. That kind of disparity behind the same OL has to tell you something.

By the way, here’s the article on “touches”:

    http://www.yardbarker.com/author/article_external/2148262

So, while I keep saying that I wouldn’t sign either, given equally empty tanks, I’ll take the Porsche over the Toyota.

  106. avatar Ray says:

I’m not convinced it’s to sell PSL’s. Don’t you think getting as far as one game away from the Super Bowl is enough to sell them? If he can help our offensive, why not?

  107. avatar brightfuture says:

    bllal
-REALLY!!!! lol this has to be sarcasm
“are you serious? Wallace Wright is arguably one the best 3 jets players on the roster last year.”

    hes not even top 25

  108. avatar SackDance99 says:

    jvsvn,

not sure you were serious. I wouldn’t have said something if it was just about Wright; but Murrell? Yeesh!

  109. avatar PSL Sucker says:

    Something to consider:
TJ signing with a rebuilidng KC almost immediately indicates there might not have been much interest around the league while LT is meeting with two contenders. Why not wait until LT signs somewhere and then say “look at my numbers compared to his”?

  110. avatar SackDance99 says:

    Bent,

Another comment caught up…maybe I should just use profanity!

  111. avatar SackDance99 says:

Or, maybe Ben is the system administrator!

  112. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Sack-

    LOL!

  113. avatar AKA....Drew says:

and yes before some LT fans try and read too much into my point…I understand that LT would not be asked to carry the load but to be another back with Greene and Leon leading the way.

The point is I think his skills have diminished greatly and he would not be a great mentor. His stats and game are simialr to what happened to S Alexander. He got run into the dirt by his team and really has nothing left.

I didnt care if TJ came back for a similar reason. Why would I now say I am all for LT when I think LT isnt even as good?

Go draft a RB and let him be a 3rd down back.

  114. avatar bilal says:

bernie- I wasn’t for the Favre trade but he did lead the jets to an 8-3 start and happened to lead the vikings to a first round bye and NFC championship game- so why did the vikings do it? To sell jerseys?! You said “you havent been paying attention the past two years” I list a bunch of great free agent additions that helped the team and you come up with one piece of evidence to defend your claim? Your arguments is pretty weak.

Bright- Wallace Wright carried the Jets to the AFC championship, were you not watching?! ok ok im done but jvsvn’s first sarcastic comment got me going.

  115. avatar Dylan says:

Filed to ESPN: CB Donald Strickland reached agreement with the Chargers on a two-year deal.

I would have liked to resign Strickland. He did a decent job when he wasn’t injured. I don’t think anyone on here is crying about not keeping him though.

  117. avatar Bent says:

Sack – sPam never has liked yardbarker. I’ll have to hold her hand for a bit.

So far today, Ben has been accused of being Thomas Jones and now sPam. So, basically, it looks like Thomas Jones IS our spam filter.

  118. avatar bilal says:

So far its a sigh of relief that the Jets havent announced the signing of LT. I really have a bad feeling its gonna happen- Mr T usually gets what he wants.

  119. avatar Bent says:

Man, when is someone going to sign one of our UFAs?

Once again, Strickland being picked up does not enable the Jets to target a UFA.

  120. avatar Jimmy Shnoogen says:

All of this TJ/LT debate is fun and all, but I really feel like the more important issue is being lost, or at least being overlooked by a lot of us.

Does it really matter which of LT or TJ is on this roster in 2010?? What about NEXT YEAR and the FUTURE RB of this team??

While I completely understand the concern about filling the void for this coming season, and whether the Jets should have matched KC’s offer or whether pursuing LT is a wiser decision, but I am one who actually isn’t as focused on this years personnel decision.

Who is going to be the third down/change of pace back in 2011? Some would say, its definitely going to be Leon Washington, however I disagree. The combination of his injury, the 2nd round tender, and his ridiculous agent all lead to a probable result: Leon is soon to be an ex-Jet.

The 2nd round tender shows three things: the Jets front office aren’t confident that he’ll return to the Leon of old, they don’t care if he looks to sign with another team, and they’ll play chicken with Alvin Keels (Leon’s agent) any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

They’re daring Leon to sign with another team, because frankly, they don’t give a damn. They see it as, we’ll get a 2nd round draft pick if he signs, or get a cheap year for his services that can only be a win-win. After that, so long Leon, so long Mr. Keels, and take your attitude with you.

This is why Mr. T is damn near handcuffing LT to the front door of the Atlantic Health center. He needs the stop gap between this year and next. I’m almost certain that you’ll see the Jets draft a change of pace/third down RB this year. It will be the perfect compliment to Shonn Greene.

So my fellow Jets fans lets not lament over who the Jets should have or will have THIS year, or how much they’re being over paid, etc. (it is an uncapped year). Lets wonder about what Mr. T plans to do to fill the void that is inevitably going to exist after this season.

  121. avatar jkjet64 says:

    Bent,

Has there been any update on who is interested in Leon and if he has talked with anyone yet?

  122. avatar James says:

What does this mean of Leon’s future? Is the team expecting him to be gone?

  123. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Why wasnt Strickland resigned again? injuries?

I liked what he did when playing the slot WR in nickel

  124. avatar cmonleon says:

and what about leon!!! isnt he the change of pace back? what we needed was a short yardage back who doesnt fumble the ball like mclain the FB from baltimore. that way we would have th eshort guy who would eventually take over for richardson the 3rd down back in leon and shonn as the inbetween guy who can do it all. but now we got a slow ass guy who we saw in person blow in a big game and now “we want him bad”. im not thinking happy thoughts right now.

  125. avatar brian311 says:

i am fully anti LT. i dont believe he has anything left, even in a reduced role. if the team wanted leadership / intangibles, they should have kept TJ. LT has never came up big in a big game. if I am Mr T I am trying to build a team that can win a game in January, and i just dont see LT having a role in that type of game

  126. avatar SackDance99 says:

    bilal,

When the TJB HOF nominations roll around, I’ll second your nomination of Wallace Wright if you second mine for Corwin Brown, the MVP of 1998.

  127. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Bernie-

    One word-Ridiculous

Sure, those guys dont hurt PSLs sales, but to suggest that these signings are completely PSL related and have nothing to do with trying to help the Jets on the football field, is RIDICULOUS

LT has a skill set that Shonn Greene does not. He would be the change of pace guy while spelling Greene, all while being a backup and carrying a light load at his age. He might be effective in a reduced role. Not to mention that Schotty knows him very well from his time in San Diego. I think those factors are more of the reason that the Jets are interested.

And Favre was brought in after the Jets had brought in a number of big name big money free agents to try and take the team to the next level…he was a bad fit here, but he was GREAT in Minnesota. Point being, yea it didnt hurt interest in the team, but the guy COULD STILL PLAY, he just didnt fit HERE. It was a move Tanny HAD TO MAKE.

You can go on with your conspiracy theories all you want, but your PSL statement is weak and not valid in my opinion

  128. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    Jimmy

Kind of my point of not signing LT. Just draft a guy that you think can do the job on 3rd down. He will be just as reliable as a (probable) broken down LT

  129. avatar bilal says:

Jimmy- It just seems to be that there are RBs everywhere. Now more than ever RB’s are given a chance to use the abilities they possess rather than relying on one guy. While I want to be as long term thinking as you are I don’t think it will be that hard to find that 2011 third down back next year. The position flooded with talent all over the NFL therefore the demand is low(Supply and demand). I understand your concerns but I think thats something that will either be addressed late in this draft or next years offseason. Patience

  130. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Bent-

“So far today, Ben has been accused of being Thomas Jones and now sPam. So, basically, it looks like Thomas Jones IS our spam filter.”

Any of you goons see this yet?

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/don_banks/03/12/ladainian.tomlinson.vikings.jets/index.html

“…Then there’s the competition factor to weigh. In the AFC East, New England remains tough, but its dynastic era appears to have ended. The Dolphins are solid, but far from scary, and the disappointing Bills are starting over once again. In short, the division is there for the taking if the Jets can continue their rise. In the NFC North, the Vikings have won two consecutive division titles. But the Packers are loaded and still ascending, the desperate Bears just got better last week in free agency, and the Lions look ready to take a decent step up in weight class, especially on defense, if they can land one of the draft’s top defensive tackles.

In terms of both L.T.’s ego and the level of competition within the division, I’d say New York has the advantage in both areas. Add it all up, and I think it’s pretty clear. Like he did so many times during his prime in San Diego, Tomlinson should go coast to coast as he begins his career’s second act. All the way from West to East, with no stopping over anywhere along the way. Just to make sure he understands, we’ll spell it out: L.T. to the J-E-T-S.”

  134. avatar Jimmy Shnoogen says:

While I agree with your rationale, I still think having a veteran presence like LT to help a rookie RB, who is bound to play the same role as LT this year would be a great positive.

    But point taken, for sure.

  135. avatar AKA....Drew says:

PSL?? Do fans really think LT is in Floram Park becasue it will sell PSL’s?

I am not really sure why they want to sign him but I doubt PSL’s have much to do with it. Nobody at those games is going to see LT in a Jet uniform

  136. avatar jkjet64 says:

What is this with mentoring Rookie RB’s?? Is the one position a rookie can and has come in and done well. If you’re talking QB or DB, i’m with you, but RB ??

  137. avatar AKA....Drew says:

For the record….It has still not been proven that Ben is not T Jones…lol

  138. avatar PSL Sucker says:

They gave Leon Washington a “2nd round tender” rather than the 1st. Now coming off the injury, I don’t think anyone would try and sign him and give up a 1st round pick, but they might for a 2nd.

This tells me the Jets are willing to see what the market value for Leon is and then decide if they want to match rather than try and negotiate their own deal. A calculated risk.

  139. avatar bilal says:

AKA – I really liked Strickland when he was on the field. He seemed to always be making plays- covering TE’s, covering slot wrs and even making big tackles. His tackle on the flat week 1 of texans was one of the statement plays of the 09 season that jets defense were prepared and ready to attack. I think the organization was frustrated with his injuries but definitely seemed like the ideal NFL nickleback. I really don’t lowery fits that bill but will be the backup for both starting CB’s

Sack- Consider it a deal. I got your back.

  140. avatar jvsvn says:

Sackdance – nothing personal – just having some fun. Love your comments on this board. Keep’em coming. Last week I made a “serious” point about Cromartie being a “clown” and everybody jumped down my throat. This week I decided to keep my comments on the lighter side. I’m really not too worried about the loss of Murrell.

  141. avatar Dylan says:

    AKA….Drew,

I agree that this move was not to sell PSL’s, but I think you are underestimating LTs popularity. Favre was only going to be a one or two year rental, but there were Jets Favre jerseys everywhere you looked. LT is a future Hall of Famer. Maybe hardcore fans wont buy his jersey, but a lot of the casual Jets fans will.

  142. avatar jkjet64 says:

If Ben is not Thomas Jones, then he is one of his relatives. I’m sure of this LOL

  143. avatar AKA....Drew says:

I agree the injuries had alot to do with it I am just suprised that they then signed Pool who might be one concussion from the sidelines…. In saying that i think the Pool signing could work out

  144. avatar Dylan says:

    AKA….Drew,

Oh woops i misread your comment. Yeah I agree nobody is going to go to the games to watch LT.

  145. avatar SackDance99 says:

    jvsvn,

That’s cool. The Murrell brothers haven’t had much luck with coaching changes. Rex comes in and it’s goodbye Marques and when Parcells came in it was YO no Adrian.

  146. avatar bilal says:

Dylan- I agree, I’ve already had a bunch of arguments with casual Jets friends emailing/calling me telling me how excited they are to get a HOFer here but still dont think its for PSLs.

jvsvn- What? You’re caling Cro a clown? Do you know him personally? You should be banned from this site!!

  147. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    Dylan

Favre was coming off one of his best seasons in GB and every Packer fan was becoming a Jet fan and was to buy his jerseys…..I just dont see the LT love coming the same way. Plus SD fans were holding the door on LT’s way out this year

  148. avatar Jimmy Shnoogen says:

    jkjet64

Its only my opinion, and I’m no football guru thats for sure. But I’ve noticed younger RBs struggle, simply because they’re impatient, and don’t recognize certain defensive schemes.

Also, a lot of talented rookie RBs come into the NFL thinking that they can out run, and rely on their athleticism to be successful. I think, working side by side with a player of LT’s stature can only do good for a rookie RB.

Obviously this goes on a case by case basis, but if you had the chance to have a young RB work with and learn from someone like Curtis Martin, I think you and I and all Jets fans would want that in a second. Even if we all knew it might not be THAT necessary. I believe LT is a genuine player and person, and could be a great person for a young RB to model themselves after.

I’d definitely agree with you if this was a regular and not an uncapped year. Any other year, and I’d say that its not worth the money. But oh well, I’m sure we’ll know soon what the verdict is.

  156. avatar bilal says:

Jimmy- I think the Martin example is a good one. I really dont view LT as that type of player- maybe my judgement from afar is wrong but he’s always seemed like a selfish player. He always visibly looked upset when Sproles was in there during key moments of the game. I remember when he was standing on the sideline hurt in the playoffs he seemed annoyed with Philip Rivers for getting hurt(even though he came back in and played with a badly hurt knee).

I’ve always had an unfair bias against him- felt he was more concerned with breaking personal records than winning- I even felt that his crying press conference was a bite contrived- again im admitting I might be judging him unfairly.

  157. avatar jvsvn says:

Bilal – last week there were 2 subjects I vowed never to address again. One is anything that has to do with TJ and the other is Cromartie’s personal life. I’m just not going there.

  158. avatar Bent says:

jk/James – I doubt this affects Leon, who I still don’t think will get any offers that his agent will sign. There was some chatter earlier in the weak about some teams being interested but it proved to be incorrect, which sounds like the agent is trying to create a buzz, which is not a good sign in terms of how many teams are actually interested.

  159. avatar jkjet64 says:

    JVSVN,

We have something in common. Last week I vowed to only drink on days that end in “Y”

  160. avatar bilal says:

  161. avatar Bent says:

Come to think of it, Ben’s posts were really solid all last year, but then went downhill after week 14. Hmmm…

    (Just kidding, Ben).

  162. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Bent-

I think you’re probably right. How is a team going to sign Leon when he can’t even pass a physical yet?

And, yes, Leon’s agent seems a bit pathetic here. As he did last year when he refused that big deal.

  163. avatar Fitz says:

Here’s the bottom line boys. The Jets are gonna do what the Jets are gonna do, and we have no control over that. We might as well go along for the ride and see what happens. That’s all we can do.

  164. avatar Manny fresh says:

I have not posted o this yet….. Y? Well cause next week when LT goes to the Viks or The saints we will be doing te same thing about westbrook :(

  165. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Bent-

I’m just waiting for someone to cut me so I can go get paid.

  166. avatar Give Leon The Damn Ball says:

a lot of complaining about a player who would be brought here just to be a back up

  167. avatar Brad says:

I think Schotty wants LT to take Leon’s role because they are hoping to get rid of leon and acquire more draft picks.

  168. avatar SackDance99 says:

One thing for sure, LT HATES the Pats (as if that rivalry needs any more fuel on the fire). I think that it’s a tough choice for LT, but if he wants the easier gig, then he’ll go to Minny. Here, he has to play outdoors in cold weather on a team that pounds the rock. The Vikes, if Favre comes back, will be more of a passing team and in the NFC North he may only face cold weather in Chicago or Green Bay depending upon the schedule. Now that LJ has signed with the Skins, the vets that can potentially “ground and pound” drop to LT, Mike Bell or Fargas. If LT signs with the Vikes, I’m not sure Bell or Fargas are worth it. If money is no object, how about a 7th rounder to Tampa Bay for Ward?

  169. avatar Brad says:

Also- LT injured his ankle in the first game of the season, missed a couple of games, and probably was hampered all season- could be why his Stats were down.

  170. avatar Manny fresh says:

I’m just happy noone has said the name woodhead yet :)

  171. avatar bilal says:

The Schotty aspect actually makes me not want LT. I have visions of him designing “cute” passing plays to the RB instead of running the ball up the middle.

  172. avatar Joe B. says:

If this happened, it would be pretty funny. We’d have the guy who does the teacup dance (Tomlinson), the guy who mocked the teacup dance (Greene) and the guy who cheapshotted the guy who mocked the teacup dance (Cromartie).

I’m ambivalent about this. I’m not a Tomlinson fan, but as long as he’s not expecting more than 10 carries a game, we could do worse.

  173. avatar BubbyBrister/shovelpass says:

Damn! I liked Donald Strickland too… Oh well, just gotta roll wid it…

After reading all this TJ vs. LT debate, I’m even more amazed that we got TJ by only swapping second rounders. Nice job, Tanny!

  174. avatar bilal says:

I still like the Mike Bell idea, he wouldnt cost a pick right? Didn’t Ward sign a huge contract? I doubt anyone is interested in that.

  175. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Poor Ben-

I feel bad for ya buddy, I defend Rex the same way you do TJ,

  176. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Joe B
    LOL

  177. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Eddie DiGio-

No problem. This comments coming my way on this thread have actually been pretty funny.

And those that werent intended to be funny were actually quite civil.

So it’s all good, my friend.

  178. avatar BubbyBrister/shovelpass says:

I’d have no problem with Mike Bell toiling in our backfield.

  179. avatar bilal says:

TJ Nevis – I see through your diplomatic approach right now. Stop trying to win us over.

  180. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Haha Ok Ben. Just wanted to let you know I know where you are coming from…

  181. avatar SackDance99 says:

Ward signed a 4 -year, $17 million deal. Depending on the up front money, he’s probably down to 3 years and @ $3.5-4 million. Normally, he’d be untradeable because of the cap hit to the Bucs (all that initial signing bonus money would hit), but the wonders of the uncapped year never cease. I bet the Bucs would give him away for a bag of chips.

  182. avatar jkjet64 says:

    Eddie,

It’s all in good fun, I would hope. We are all suffering, pathetic, Hopeful, JETS FANS. If we don’t love eachother, Noone will!! lol

  183. avatar cold_old_steelers_fan says:

If the contract is incentive based with a minimum of guaranteed money then LT isn’t a bad option whether Leon returns or not. Draft a decent running back to develop for next year if they are both back or a good back to fit into the 3 back rotation.

If the real issue with TJ was versatility it is odd they didn’t say that to begin with. I wish him success in KC though I think he will find it tougher sledding there.

  184. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    bilal-

    LOL!

    _____________

    jkjet64-

    I agree!

  185. avatar bilal says:

Sack – The problem with that is that no one knows how it will affect the cap situation when and if the CBA is agreed upon. They could still get affected later on for it- theres nothing saying they are completely absolved from it.

  186. avatar SackDance99 says:

Now, does having dinner with Rex Ryan improve the Jets chances of signing LT? Definitely TJB poll material.

  187. avatar jkjet64 says:

    Sack,

Not if Rex eats him! lol

  188. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    jkjet64-

LOL so true…just thought Id help my buddy Ben out, he seemed to be taking a beating…but it is all in good fun

  189. avatar dakar says:

i really dont understand some of you guys…you really think TJ IS BETTER THAN LT…wow…anyway,i just have to LOL…at that…

  190. avatar jkjet64 says:

I watched the combined and someone who caught my eye was Monterio Hardesty from Tennesee I beleive. Anyone know something about this guy?

  191. avatar Nikolas says:

What a stupid move..going after LT? Only Sackdance is against it after he is for it.

Since they screwed up the running game the best way to improve it and make it a real terror for opposing defenses is with the 29th pick the Jets to select Jahvid Best. This guy can have the largest possible impact on this team than any other player we can draft at 29th.
Behind this OL, Best , Greene and Leo will terrorize the hell out of anybody.

  192. avatar dakar says:

the kid from LSU deserves a look see…maybe as a undrafted free agaent…

  193. avatar bilal says:

I think its a 50/50 split of people for or against it. I’m definitely against it but I wouldn’t say they have ruined their running game. Jets need pass rushers not RB’s in the first round!

  194. avatar SackDance99 says:

    bilal,

Tampa Bay has been well below the cap anyhow and is a likely candidate to spend far less than what would’ve been the minimum because of the Glazers’ liquidity problems. Ward just seems like the perfect back up and would be a good complement to Greene. But, he would be a little pricey for a 100 carries.

  195. avatar dakar says:

    nik

29th pick has to be best pass rusher available…this draft should be to make this defense the best that has ever stepped out on a field…just my thoughts…RB in the later rounds or undrafted sounds good…or just sign LT…who will prove to be better than TJ…just my thoughts…

  196. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

Plus LT would love a shot to beat NE 2 times a year

  197. avatar Bent says:

Ward’s guaranteed money was only $6m. If the cap returns and the dead money for 2011 and 2012 bites it would only be $3m anyway, less than the salary saving.

Dakar – which one? LSU has several RBs in this draft, all with ability.

  198. avatar SackDance99 says:

    Nikolas,

Very funny. I’m not for getting LT; I just think he’s a better back up option than TJ, which isn’t saying much. I believe that I pretty much have consistently said that I want the Jets to draft an RB AND sign a vet with more left in the tank. And, Best is fast, but slight. Not sure he can take the “ground and pound.” When the Jets choose in the 2nd round they’ll have plenty of options for bigger backs.

  199. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

we still need a RB in the later rounds..I think we can get Toby G from Fresno in the 3rd rounder or maybe 4th. He would be a great signing to play FB and take some carries.,

  200. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    BubbyBrister-

Mike Bell’s YPC last year wasn’t terrific—3.8—but it’s about the same as the YPC of Willie Parker (4.0) and Justin Fargas (also 3.8), and better than the YPC of LT (3.3).

Westbrook had a much higher YPC (4.5) than that entire group, but his history of concussions worries me.

The one clear advantage that Mike Bell seems to have is his age—he’s 26. While all of these other RBs are around 30.

But most of these backs—Westbrook, Fargas, Parker and Bell—all appear to have around the same amount of mileage: around 1,400 career touches each.

LT has about 2,000 MORE career touches (3,500) than either Westbrook, Fargas, Parker or Bell.

  201. avatar dakar says:

    BENT

CHARLES SCOTT…he was hurt this past year…didn’t play much but from what i saw the kid can move for a 238 lb RB…as a undrafted FA…i think he’ll be a steal…just my thoughts…

  202. avatar Jim says:

LT to stay in NY tonight. Going to an unscheduled dinner with Tanny and Rex tonight. Good sign? Me thinks so.

  203. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    jkjet-

I heard that kid from Tennessee you are talking about rose about 2 rounds after his performance.

He is definitely climbing up there

  204. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

we could have gotten LJ also..Wash just signed him

  205. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

Interesting thought…rumors are thinking we may go after Sharper even though we signed Pool. I think Sharper can get 15 picks in this defense, but with the FA rules can we even sign him?

  206. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

    Eddie,

he stayed over night in Minn also. He will also visit NO and then come here (where I live) to SD to talk it over with his family before he decides. He will leave NY w/o a contract trust me.

  207. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

Sorry last comment was for Jim not Eddie

  208. avatar Jim says:

ca jets fan – he was scheduled to stay over in minny. he wasn’t scheduled to stay over in NY. he was supposed to be flying home tonight to discuss things with his wife.

  209. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    Sack

I think the Ward idea is a good one…. if only for a late rounder. I would still draft a kid in the 4th round to handle some 3rd down duties. Alot of this has alot to do what is going on with Leon.

I didnt want TJ back…I dont really want LT even as a 3rd down back

  210. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

    right…Jim

Living in SD they are covering this like crazy. He will stil lschedule a stop in NO and possibly Philly. He wont leave with a contract. I hope he does, but I do not think he will.

  211. avatar SackDance99 says:

    dakar,

I agree on Charles Scott. He could be a steal.

  212. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

Derrick Ward? ugh 1 good year and he has a bad contract

  213. avatar daveb says:

Can someone definitevly state whether the proposed $$ for LT would be the SAME as that we were about to give TJ? including TJ’s bonus? I don’t think so…

  214. avatar SackDance99 says:

I like Ben Tate’s running style more than Hardesty’s and they had very similar Combine numbers.

  215. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Rex might pull a John Candy tonight and polish off the “Ole 96er” at the steakhouse tonight to impress LT.

  216. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    Ben Tate

sign me up. He reminds me of Jonathan Stewart

  217. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Bent & Sack-

Ward’s YPC last year was 3.6—worse than the YPC of either Westbrook, Fargas, Parker or Bell.

Ward is also around the same age as Westbrook, Fargas, Parker and LT: 29.

But Ward has a lot less mileage: only about 550 career touches.

Or roughly 900 touches less than either Westbrook, Fargas, Parker or Bell.

And about 3,000 touches less than LT.

  218. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

    daveb,

I thought the offer was more.

Everyone remember if TJ does not lose gas at the end of the year and Shonne doesnt step in the way he does, TJ is back! Also, LW getting hurt played huge in this too.

Shonne has not proved he can take 250-300 carries over a year consistently. In fact he got hurt in preseason, and the champ game. There are issues. We need to try and sign a vet, be it LT or Willis, or Parker and then draft another big back like Toby G.

  219. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

    Ben,

That is because Ward only had 1 1000 yard year proving he could run the ball and that was when he was part of a 3 headed attack

  220. avatar Bent says:

CA – it wouldn’t be impossible, but Sharper would need to be amenable to a flexible contract and, of course, they must lose a UFA first.

  221. avatar SackDance99 says:

Ward’s contract might only be $11 million over 3 years with likely very little guaranteed $$$ left, so the consequences of the Jets cutting him would likely be negligible. It’s in line with what TJ got to be a back up and I can’t hold what he did in Tampa Bay against him; their OL stinks.

  222. avatar daveb says:

    I thought TJ’s bonus was around $3M

plus his yearly salary, i would think that it was far and away greater than $3.5 proposed in this article

plus, the K with LT is likely incentive based, so it would likely be less than $3.5.

Just some off-the-top-of my head figures, but ill look into the details when i have time later

  223. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    daveb-

According to the original post above: Thomas George of AOL/FanHouse is saying, “The Jets are willing to give Tomlinson a two-year contract equal to the two-year, $5 million-deal they would not give to departed running back Thomas Jones, now with Kansas City. They may be willing to move upwards to $3.5 million a year for Tomlinson. . .”

  224. avatar Pdubbs says:

If Shonn Greene is healthy an effective … then Tomlinson is perfect because he’s much faster then TJ.

  225. avatar SackDance99 says:

    CA Jets Fan,

Isn’t being part of a 3-headed attack exactly what he’d be on the Jets? Greene=Jacobs, Ward=Ward and Leon=Bradshaw.

  226. avatar Dylan says:

    Adam_Schefter
Bucs signed LB Jon Alston, the former Raider.

  227. avatar daveb says:

    Ben,

thanks for the clarification, i definitely skimmed over that.

In my mind, though, and incentive – laden contract is better for us than guaranteed bonus $$ disbursement. I.e. giving TJ his $3M bonus today is worse for the jets than giving LT a $5M two year contract riddled with conditions.

  228. avatar daveb says:

Conditions taht are controllable, like carries, etc.

  229. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Drew-Old96er- great movie LOL

“Kids love bugs…besides their butts light up”

  230. avatar daveb says:

but…….i think i’m getting ahead of myself. probably should sign the guy before doing a comprehensive K analysis.

  231. avatar oleosmirf says:

the only thing I can think of is the Jets feel that their offensive line is superior to the Chargers.

I mean as much as I wanted Jones back and how well he produced last season, he did seem to miss a lot of open holes last year.

I think that if the Jets line is dominant, LT will find lots of running room…plus Greene can share the load…

  232. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Sack-

I think we can agree that EVERYTHING about Tampa Bay sucked last year, including its O line.

So, then, if we were to apply your career touches principle here, Ward would seem to be the better value than LT, Westbrook, Fargas, Parker or Bell.

Ward has the least mileage of all of them—by far.

  233. avatar Bent says:

Wow – Ward’s that old? Seems like only yesterday the Jets drafted him.

  234. avatar dakar says:

thinking outside the box big time but here it goes…if leon is a go why not try an use him as a slot reciever…sign whatever vet.rb and draft a rb in the later rounds or pick up a rb after the draft…just my thoughts…

  235. avatar bilal says:

    Ben-

Caddy didnt have such a bad year for the Bucs. He nearly averaged 4 yards a carry. I really liked Bell last year cause he was used alot in goaline situations and the way he finished runs. I never saw that in Denver but last year he always made sure he was the guy doing the hitting- same way shonn greene finishes his runs.

  236. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    daveb-

Yeah, but TJ’s contract with KC has no $3 million bonus. It’s just $3 mil this year, $2 mil next, with half a mil in incentives.

And, as has been said many times above, this is the kind of money we wouldn’t give TJ, but are prepared to give LT, or possibly more.

  237. avatar dmazz says:

OK – I was never a fan TJ’s running style I felt instead of going full speed at holes he was often dancing around too much. I feel like the Jets have had on of the top 5 Offensive Lines the last few years he’s been here.

LT is going to the HOF not Thomas Jones. I’d rather have LT with our Oline and this offense than TJ.

TJ was a good Jet but the Jets are doing the right things. I would have liked Larry Johnson but he was signed. A lot of people were saying that Larry Johnson’s career was over when he was in KC.

    Don’t count out LT.

  238. avatar Organized Chaos says:

    BIG NEWS!!
    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/12/rumors-swirling-that-tomlinson-will-sign-with-jets/
THERE ARE ALWAYS FLIGHT TO SAN DIEGO. C’MON MAN. HE’S STAYING BECAUSE HE IS STARTING TO BLEED GREENNNNN

  239. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    bilal-

True, Ward’s YPC (3.6) was a bit less than the YPC for C. Williams (3.9).

But both Ward & Williams, had a better YPC than LT. And Ward & Williams were on one of the worst teams in the league. LT was on a SB contender.

But I take it you think Mike Bell is the way to go. As I said above, Bell has around the same mileage as Westbrook, Fargas, and Parker (around 1,400 career touches).

But Bell is the youngest RB (26) of the group—LT, Westbrook, Ward, Fargas, and Parker—all of whom are around 29 or 30.

  240. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Organized Chaos-

    This is a RUMOR.

Even the writer himself refers to it as a rumor:

“Free agent running back LaDainian Tomlinson hasn’t found a new team just yet. But as he visits with the Jets, the rumors are swirling that he’s close.”

    And:

“We’ve caught wind of a rumor that Tomlinson will, in fact, sign with the Jets.”

  241. avatar andrew says:

    good move if it happens

  242. avatar AKA....Drew says:

I really dont want to get used to seeing LT on this team…..but like always I will get used to it. I root for the Green and White jerseys boys

  243. avatar bilal says:

    Ben-
Just off of watching all the players I really like Fargas for the Jets. Another big downhill runner who I think would do great behind a good offensive line. Although i’m a bit skeptical because someone mentioned here he failed a physical recently. If healthy I think he is a good RB who wont demand much money.

  244. avatar andrew says:

tomlinson isnt as good as he was but with shn greene he wont have to hes an elusive back and has a different running style than greene

  245. avatar andrew says:

    shonne not shn

  246. avatar Jimmy Shnoogen says:

Right now it looks like LT is just as likely to file False Imprisonment charges as he is to sign with the Jets at this point lol…

  247. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    klecko71-

Hutch is saying that they APPEAR to be close to a deal:

“LaDainian Tomlinson, Jets to have dinner, appear to be getting close on deal”

  248. avatar bilal says:

Ben- Ironically of all the guys you mentioned LT is the guy I would least like. Westbrooks concussions scare me but I lived in Philly for 7 years and often watched eagles games- he is a gamer. Hes tougher than most people think and is extremely versaitile. Hes a great leader and always makes the smart plays.

  249. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Take it as you want to take it, but LT has been with the Jets all day and all night.

If he is not signing with the Jets, then what the hell are they doing? Playing Monopoly?

I didnt think he was serious about coming here but the rumors are swirling and just the long duration of his visit here are making me think that they are ironing out a contract right now…if he wasnt he would be on the plane right now

  250. avatar ridinmywave says:

    Lmao @ woodhead

  251. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    bilal-

I agree: if there were no history of concussion, I would jump at the chance to sign Westbrook, more than any other RB available right now through FA.

  252. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Eddie DiGio-

According to Hutch, the dinner was scheduled beforehand.

So there’s no way yet to tell whether this means something, or means nothing.

  253. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Ben

I didnt think it was happening either but its not the dinner I was referring to…he is staying OVERNIGHT

He wasnt supposed to stay OVERNIGHT…and Im just speculating, but from the looks of it and what we are hearing…it looks like it’s getting done…like I said take it how you want to take it, it’s just my personal feelings, nothing more

  254. avatar Organized Chaos says:

So, if Hutch says the dinner was already planned and Cimini says he is staying because he can’t get any flights……. we are getting different reports from (what I personally consider) very reliable guys.
I personally interepert this as he IS in fact getting close to a deal with the NYJ. Wether you do or do not agree with that is your opinion and I respect that, but I personally believe LT is about to sign in NY

  255. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    Eddie,

Rumor has it there are not any late flights out to the West Coast tonight. At least thats what is being reported

  256. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Eddie DiGio-

This is from Hutch, re: LT staying overnight:

“Tomlinson will remain in the New York/New Jersey area overnight, in part because there are no late-night flights to the West Coast.”

  257. avatar AKA....Drew says:

If they let him leave tonight he will sign with the Vikings. If they want him they have 1 shot. The going home to discuss it with the wife is like when you leave a car dealership without buying the car….Youre probably not going back.

Always be closing and I think we have 2 very good closers at the table for dinner with LT. If he dosent sign he never wanted to

  258. avatar dakar says:

LT will do a good job for us wether you want him or not on this team…just my thoughts…

  259. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Organized Chaos-

Hutch & Cimini are saying THE SAME THING:

Here’s Cimini: “Since there are no flights that late back to the West Coast — LT lives in San Diego — he will stick around for another night.”

And (as I posted above) here’s Hutch: “Tomlinson will remain in the New York/New Jersey area overnight, in part because there are no late-night flights to the West Coast.”

  260. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Drew-

If it were true that once LT leaves the talks with a team, he isn’t going back, then he wouldn’t be signing with the Vikings either.

  261. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    Ben

I think the thoery is that his agent set up the Jets visit after the Vikings visit as a scare tactic to Minn

If he leaves he is signing with the Vikings.

  262. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Oh ok- I got the overnight info second hand from my friend- he never said that…

Still think its getting done…just my gut

  263. avatar AKA....Drew says:

BTW….How is there 3-4 airports in the area and not one West Coast flight tonight? lol

  264. avatar rusty sanchez says:

this just in…LT and jets brass to dine at an old country buffet

  265. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Drew-

If LT’s agent is any kind of agent at all, he’d be trying to scare the Vikings with the possibility of LT signing with the Jets, and he’d be trying to scare the Jets with the possibility of signing with the Vikings.

The theory here is a common one among agents: you try to get each side to bid against the other.

  266. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Drew- I know…Ive gotten flights out to the Vegas and LA ,no problem spur of the moment

  267. avatar bilal says:

Maybe cause of the weather? I cant believe I just started looking up flights to San Diego- I think i’m done with this story for the night. Gonna watch the Big East Tourney till I hear something official.

  268. avatar Jags says:

TJ is just a tougher all around player. Wasn’t it LT who quit on his team two years in the playoffs when things got tough. Don’t like it. Don’t like it at all. I would love to know who TJ pissed off to get slapped in the face like this. If this is Schotty’s guy, then IMHO he better get it done this year or he has surely worn out his welcome.

  269. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

i thought the same thing.. how are there no flights?

    haha

  270. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Drew, bilal, & Eddie-

It could be there aren’t any flights, it could be the rain, but I think we also have to keep in mind that LT’s standards in terms of an acceptable flight accommodation would be considerably higher than our own.

In other words, it’s not just ANY flight that LT would take to the west coast, it would have to be a flight with all the first-class amenities.

These celebrity athletes live in a different world than ours, my friends.

  271. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Not for nothing but Rich Cimini is the biggest Debbie Downer ever- he also said no way Cromartie becomes a Jet- and it took the Jets all of 5 minutes to trade for him after midnight March 5th

  272. avatar Daniel says:

Pass on LT, draft Joe McKnight or Jahvid Best in the 2nd.

  273. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Ben- Ive taken first class seats if I really wanted or had to get out there- its very possible man

We’ll know by tonight….if he isnt a Jet before midnight…it aint happening

  274. avatar bilal says:

Speak for yourself Ben – I’m about to hop into my Bentley right now because my Rolls Royce doesnt look good in the rain.

I’ll still be shocked if I hear Jets sign LT- something I never thought I would hear and hopefully never will.

  275. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Eddie-

If you’ve paid for first class air, then you live in a different world than I do!

  276. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    LOL.

But at this point, I don’t think anyting Mike T does—or gets done—would shock me. He very well may get LT to sign tonight. And he very well may not.

  277. avatar AKA....Drew says:

I have flown out of Newark, Philly and JFK on a Friday before. I think Woody just told the airports to do him a solid.

    Ben

Nice try….We all know TJ flies 1st class….You almost had me with that one…lol

  278. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Here’s the latest from Cimini:

    ________________________________

There’s a “possibility” that LaDainian Tomlinson will make a decision tonight, according to a person close to the Tomlinson courtship — a strong indication that the Jets will prevail over the Vikings for the future Hall-of-Fame running back.

If Tomlinson makes a decision tonight, it’s hard to imagine that he’d pick the Vikings, considering he’ll be breaking bread with member of the Jets’ hierarchy.

    ____________________________________

  279. avatar Daniel says:

Anyone else hope we don’t get LT and draft a Joe McKnight or Jahvid Best-type player in the 2nd? Tomlinson is a scatback at this point in his career and I’d rather get a guy with upside than have a guy on the decline in the backfield.

  280. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Drew-

    LOL!

  281. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Ben

Before I was married and had responsibilities, I did a lot of dumb s#it to find a good party…lol

Im getting anxious about this…and I still havent made up my mind how I really feel about if he actually came here!

  282. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    Daniel

umm..yea. I have been the minority most of the day

  283. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Daniel-

Just scroll up. You’ve got plenty of company on this thread, brother.

  284. avatar bilal says:

Damm TJ Nevis almost got me again! I’ve actually been on a first class flight because my mother has been in the airline industry her whole life- I must say if I could afford it- I would never travel economy!

  285. avatar AKA....Drew says:

I am going to grab a pie….pizza pie.l..ol The last 2 times I have done this the last 2 weeks we traded for Cromartie and then traded Rhodes.

When I get back something has to have happened.

  286. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Eddie-

I hear you. I did a lot of dumb sh#t before I was married, I do a lot of dumb sh#t now. It just doesn’t cost a whole hell of a lot to do it.

As for the mixed feelings, yeah, I can see it.

The 3.3 YPC bothers me, but I like the 12 TDs.

I think, though, if we’re looking to improve the team, there are better options for the amount dollars we’ll have to spend on LT.

If we’re looking to sell PSLs or to get fans to tune into the games, well, then I guess signing LT becomes very cost effective.

  287. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    LOL…funny stuff

  288. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    bilal-

    LOL.

I once had first class seats too, but it was because the cheap seats were all full, and they bumped me up.

  289. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Drew-

I thought you were against signing LT.

If so, maybe you shouldn’t go for that pizza!

  290. avatar Daniel says:

I’m not against signing LT (if it happens, big if), but I’d prefer a McKnight or Best-like player in the 2nd. I actually don’t think slot WR is a HUGE need. I think we can grab one somewhere between rounds 4-7.

  291. Don’t we need 2 running backs? Meaning, if the Jets sign LT but Leon leaves, they will still be in the market for another back. No?

  292. avatar adornoj1 aka JetFan in Miami says:

hey guys…did i miss anything?? did we sign Pennington? lol

  293. avatar Jason says:

The Jets just sent out emails touting the meeting with LT going on right this very second. It means one of two things– this deal is very close or the Jets really are desperate to keep making a splash by bringing in a name player.

  294. avatar Bent says:

Spin – if they lose Leon, I’d guess they’ll draft another back with the extra pick. But…who says he’s leaving? I expect him to be here.

  295. avatar Jimmy Shnoogen says:

    LOL,

“Just to do him a solid”

I can picture the conversation now:

“Hey guys, I know how you let the 5th graders direct traffic around here, so do me a favor and ground all cross continental flights for the next 24 hours… Thanks fellas!”

  296. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    E. Weeks-

We already have that link (just scroll up), but it’s still all rumor.

  297. avatar E. Weeks says:

Sorry Ben, I cannot keep up with all the comments considering we are already at 300 and counting.

Just pointing out that the rumors seem to be getting much stronger by the hour.

  298. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Ben

Time will tell on the move. I hate losing TJ because of what he gave to this team, but LT’s versatility and our vastly superior O line are drawing points.

Dont think that its to sell PSLs though, even my wife said “oh to back up John Greene” (yea John Greene)…see my point, she even knows he’s done.

The guy was great once, and maybe a reduced role will help him recapture some of that old magic…but on the flip side he has to follow up a true warrior in TJ, and walk into a locker room that TJ owned while he was here

  299. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    *done as a featured back

  300. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    E. Weeks-

No problem. But I think we have to remember that rumors are, well, rumors.

They could be planted by one side or another, just to stir the pot, just to put a scare into someone.

For instance, LT’s agent could be spreading these rumors–about LT & the Jets being close to a deal—on background (ie, without attribution), just to get the Vikings to blink, and make an offer.

And then there’s also the possibiity that these rumors are just pure air.

  301. avatar Patrick From the Bronx says:

LT is on the a big hill going down. Jets should look into a trade for S. Jackson of the Rams or M. Bush from the Radiers.

  302. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Eddie-

If we do sign LT, I’m wondering how this is going to play in the lockerroom.

For instance, are the players going to look at Mike T, and think that his refusal to offer TJ the same money as KC means that the FO has no concept of the real value of what these men do on the field?

Are the players going to think: uh, oh, here comes a big name, who’s going to get paid only because of that name, not because of what he can do on the field now, or what he did last year?

Or are the players going to forget it all, and just embrace LT?

Don’t know. Curious to see what happens.

But I do think there are a hell of a lot of fans out there who know very little about football, and are impressed by LT’s name.

And I think it’s a sure bet that if we do sign LT, this will be a HUGE headline story everywhere in the sports world. Which is always good for business. . .

  303. avatar Jets4life says:

I think we should sign LT And let leon walk for a second rounder and select: Rd 1 olb jerry Hughes rd 2 (from leon) rb Jonathan dwyer rd 2: 3-4 de corey wootton rd 4: wr eric decker rd 5 fs terrell skinner rd 6: cb Sam shields rd 7 og alex parsons

  304. avatar Super T says:

This is absolutely crazy! I had LT on my $ fantasy team last season and kept a very close eye on him last season. He sucked! Thomas Jones was better. LT’s only claim to fame was all the TDs he scored last season and that was because the Chargers had zero goal line game and would give the ball to LT 3 times on one series on the 1 or 2 yard line to get the ball in the end zone. If there is such a stat as goal line attempts I guarantee that LT would be # 1. The Chargers would continually feed him the ball until he scored (usually after 3 attempts). He doesn’t have any cutback moves anymore and just runs straight ahead when he thinks he sees a hole. He is definitely a step down from Thomas Jones and we could more wisely spend money somewhere better than on LT!

  305. avatar sackexchange says:

LT was in his prime with zone blocking… chargers went away from that the last few years… he is going to be way better then jones….he may have lost a step but he still is faster then jones….LT is huge for us,,

  306. avatar Jets 2010 says:

Its done!!!!!!!!! 2 years, 3 million. Incentives could make sal this year 5 million and guarentee next year! Welcome LT.

  307. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Jets 2010-

Do you have a link for this?

  308. avatar matt says:

just a ? first off i love tj alot but he wasnt great until he got mangold brick and fanaca im not saying thsi will happen but can anyone honestly say there isnt a decent chacne LTcan get back alot of his mojo with our o-line?

  309. avatar matt says:

    link?

  310. avatar andrew says:

san diegos o-line wasnt that good the jets have one of the best and LT wont have to be a feature back I think LT will have 4 yards per carry

  311. avatar joe0991 says:

    link????

  312. avatar JAY says:

JETS 2010 WHERE DO U SEE THIS???

  313. avatar Daniel says:

Jets2010 punked you all… it’s not official… nobody has this info. Calm down. He doesn’t have a source.

  314. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Ben-

People can say what they about TJ, but every guy he played with knew when that man lined up he was going full speed full throttle all day every day…he was a true leader. I hope the guys we have now can do the job TJ did, because he is going to be missed

And it is true that the die hards like us know that LT will have a MINOR role, but the casual fans will go out just to see the big name on the new team

I like LT’s multiple skills at the RB position, but he better give us TJ’s effort or this move is going to backfire

  315. avatar Super T says:

Funny Sproles didn’t seem to have much trouble running behind the Chargers O line. I pray this isn’t true because I guarantee you that LT will not give us what TJ gave us last season!

  316. avatar Marvel says:

You wouldn’t believe how long it took mr to scroll down to the bottom of the page .. Anyway LT if sighned will rush for 1000 yards easy , it’s not as hard as it use to be .. I luv Green but he will miss a couple games & LT will Dazzle & all will be well ……… I Still want a Rookie BEAST but even tho I can’t swim I luv a good splash So I won’t hate LT .. Our run game is like the Shanahan BRONCOS , Brad smith if given 200 carries could get 800 yards it’s just easier when you have a savage OL ..

  317. avatar GREENBLOOD says:

I just read most of your guys 300+ posts, and this guy Jets 2010 does this, it was a climax !!!!

Good stuff guys ! I’m loving it for once !

  318. avatar Jets Dawg says:

    Ben Nevis

in 2007 Jones had 1 TD
    in 2009 L.T. had 12 TD

Ill take 11 more TDS then .4 more YPC

  319. avatar E. Weeks says:

I’ll believe it when Adam Schefter reports it.

  320. avatar LWsquad says:

Okay….with our O-line anyone will succeed…. Now then I just saw this on NFL.com….How fitting is this?

Free-agent CB Donald Strickland has agreed to a two-year deal with the Chargers, according to a league source

  321. avatar Super T says:

Let LT go play with Favre they deserve to be together.

  322. avatar LWsquad says:

    Super T-
Are you kidding me with the Sproles comment? Please look up his stats.

  323. avatar Super T says:

So you would be happy with LT sitting his happy butt on the sideline making bank from the Jets until they drive the ball to the opponents 1 or 2 yard line so they can bring him in the game to get the glory of scoring the TD? Not worth the $ it will take to sign him.

  324. avatar gangreen4ever says:

LT isnt a starter guys stop comparing the numbers between him and tj the two offenses are completly different + he’ll be asked to do a lot less, + lets face it, its Ladanian draking Tomlinson it would be awesome

  325. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Jets Dawg-

In 2009, ALL of the top FA backs had better YPC numbers than LT: Willie Parker, Mike Bell, Larry Johnson, Brian Westbrook, and even Justin Fargas.

    Which wasn’t difficult: LT’s YPC was 3.3!

You can blame it on SD’s O line all you want.

But Fargas and Ward were on two of the worst teams in the league, and they still had better YPC than LT.

Tomlinson was on a SB contender.

  326. avatar Daniel says:

    SKIP LT, DRAFT MCKNIGHT!

  327. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Yea Super T…the Sproles statement is just wrong in so many different ways

Its funny when LT got released, the guys on NFL Live said the two best fits would be the Jets and Vikings because LT needs good blocking to be effective, in other words, he cant make the yards out of nothing like he used to…if thats true, then he is truly a fit on the Jets because our O Line are beasts!

  328. avatar Super T says:

Why do I have to look it up LWsquad? Sproles YPC was greater than LTs was and LT was the teams featured back.

  329. avatar LWsquad says:

    Super T-
    who are you addressing?
If it’s me, uh if dude get’s 20 td next season are you gonna complain?
I’m not saying he will, but he has focus, drive and determination once he’s in the red zone. I always figured it was because of the visor. There’s proabaly some high tech S’ going on in that thing.

  330. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    E. Weeks-

I agree. No one—not Schefter, not Cimini, not Hutch, not ESPN’s AFC East blog—no one is reporting what Jets 2010 said above.

  331. avatar rusty sanchez says:

between peterson and farve LT will get the ball twice a game…between schottenheimer more carries and a young qb who will use him as a safety valve i think the jets make a better fit…the jets may get more than 1st base on this date

  332. avatar Ben Nevis says:

Last year, Sproles had 3.7 YPC.

    LT had 3.3 YPC.

    Same exact O line.

  333. avatar LWsquad says:

Yep, YPC, that’s a pretty telling stat. So please provide us with those numbers for comparison and then give us the TDs scored by the two and then we’ll have a better idea of who did what with the same O-line. Keep in mind, I’m not a big LT fan, but I beleive Sproles is a kick returner at best.

  334. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Super T

You are not taking into account that LT got all the tough yards. He was the short yardage goalline back- those are 1 or 2 yard carries- not going to help the old YPC

Plus- Sproles was used on passing downs on 3 rd and long. Sproles had a 20 yard run vs the Jets in the playoffs but it was rigth before the half ended and the Jets were giving them those yards- stats can be decieving- even Phil Simms said that about LT

  335. avatar GREENBLOOD says:

After L.T. just two more, and Santa can come emty handed.

    1. Joey Porter
    2. T.O. (I’ll stay modest, mut Brandon Marshal is my #1)

  336. avatar LWsquad says:

    Ben-
Thanks for the stats. I must be wrong….

  337. avatar Super T says:

I am telling you guys I had LT on my $ Fantasy team last year and also have the NFL Package on Direct TV. I watched him every game last year and he is nothing more than a backup RB at this point in his career. If you think it is wise for the Jets to pay equal or more money to a backup LT than Thomas Jones the starter for the Jets last season, than go ahead and hope the Jets sign him. Just don’t be complaining when you realize that LT is nothing more than a backup RB at this point in his career. He would be much better served to go backup AP in Minnesota.

  338. avatar LWsquad says:

    Both YPC are pretty bad.

  339. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Ben-

The Sproles comparison to LT is not a good one. Two guys at the same position could not be used in more different ways and situations

  340. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    LWsquad-

Have to admit: this is getting more than a bit redundant.

We’ve covered this ground again and again on this thread.

So I’d appreciate it if you’d just scroll up. So that we don’t have to repeat all of this all over again.

  341. avatar LWsquad says:

You ever think maybe LT saw the writing on the wall in SD before last season…I mean the owner came out and questioned his toughness. LT just rode it out. I do remember the guy breaking records, and while he ain’t that same guy physically, I think in this reduced role, we could be on to something good here.

  342. avatar LWsquad says:

In the end, if Rex talks to him and Rex likes him….Welcome aboard!

  343. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

LT carried it more, in short yardage situations when the box is stacked

The fact that NIETHER of them gained more than 4 yards a carry is more telling that SD’s O line was terrible in the run game

  344. avatar Jimmy Shnoogen says:

Anyone know what the longest thread in TheJetsBlog history was??

  345. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

AFC championship this year- over a 1000 comments

  346. avatar LWsquad says:

    Ben-
Wow, as much redundancy that I see on this blog and you’re gonna call me out?
I just came in and didn’t want to read 300 posts. My bad for commenting on a recent one. If you’re tired of reading all 300 posts and having to continuously comment I’m sorry. Are you a moderator or something?

  347. avatar LWsquad says:

    Eddie-
    completely agree.

  348. avatar Super T says:

    2009
Thomas Jones = SEVEN games over 100 yards rushing
LT = ZERO games over 100 yards rushing

  349. avatar andrew says:

in the end i think by tomorrow LT will be a Jet and he will be a good move by tanny

  350. avatar Jimmy Shnoogen says:

Wow, haven’t even scratched the surface yet lol…

These guys should have a 24 hour a day chat, open continuously, people can come and go as they please, that way these threads stay under control haha.

  351. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Eddie-

Sorry, if you don’t like the Sproles comparison, but we’ve compared LT to quite a number of backs already.

You and I probably agree more than we disagree, so I’ll address the following comments to everyone else who’s apologizing for LT on this thread.
    ____________________________________

    Take your pick, gentleman:

Willie Parker, Mike Bell, Larry Johnson, Brian Westbrook, Justin Fargas.

Everyone of those RBs had better YPC than LT. Every single one.

And Fargas did so on the lowly Raiders.

Bell did so on one of the worst teams in the league: the Bucs.

LT had 3.3. YPC on a SUPER BOWL CONTENDER.

    ____________________________________

Yes, I agree LT had 12 TDs, and that’s a good thing.

But it isn’t the ONLY thing.

And if you look at his 2009 season, you have to admit that LT is only a shadow of the RB he once was.

  352. avatar Daniel says:

Mike Bell was on the Saints, not Bucs. Check your stuff first.

  353. avatar Green Lantern "I WANT BERRY" says:

OH MY GOD IF YOU DON’T STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT LT!
Fact Is The New York Jets Are In Love With LT look at the bright side and shut up.

  354. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    LWsquad-

Sorry, I wasn’t calling you out. I’m just getting tired of the repetition. Which is clearly not your fault.

I posted one last comment on the subject above, but I think I need to take a break from any more of the sign/don’t sign LT debate.

    It’s actually getting tedious now.

  355. avatar Super T says:

LT = ZERO games over 100 yards rushing

And even better yet, the SD Chargers played four of those games against the Oakland Raiders and Kanas City Chiefs.

  356. avatar matt says:

i think everyone is half right here i believe tj was great here but he wont b half as good with kc and i think LT has def had a few bad years and hes not the best rb in the league but he will get a boost from o line

  357. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Daniel-

    My bad. I meant Ward.

Ward had a higher YPC than LT.

And Ward was on one of the worst teams in the league, the Bucs.

LT, as I pointed out above, was on a SB contender.

  358. avatar rusty sanchez says:

lt is going to be an overpaid backup no matter where he goes…samething as what tj was going to be for us this year…shonn is our starter next year no matter if tj stayed or if we get LT or any other free agent…shonn is def over his fumbling im jus hoping he can stay healthy cause hes the real deal

  359. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Ben
I didnt mean it like that. I just watched a lot of Charger games this year and Sproles workload was a walk in the park compared to LT. LT got beat up, banged around so much more than Sproles did. But you are right on the money dude. You have all the facts right there, and they are what they are.

My thing is Im not rushing to judgement, because Childress knows offense, and the Vikes went after this guy HARD. Now the Jets are going after him HARD

The numbers are what they are, but when quality NFL people go after someone, there is usually a little more there than what we know from the outside…

  360. avatar andrew says:

    Ben
    I still take LT

  361. avatar JetFan4Life says:

TJ was a leader, a warrior and loyal. He gave everything he had last year for the team, led by example and helped us almost get to the promised land. The NFL is a cruel business for 30+ running backs and he knew it. That’s why he wanted a new deal before last year. He pretty much saw the writing on the wall before last season and knew he was never going to see that roster bonus.

I hate that he came back to the Jets with the opportunity to match the Chiefs offer and we declined. But we have to have faith in the guys making the decisions for the Jets. They’ve panned out, you have to say.

I wish TJ luck and I think he made the Jets and their fans proud. He’s what’s great about football.

  362. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

not to mention they are going after LT for the same “role” ….so obviously they think he can still help a team

  363. avatar LWsquad says:

    Ben-
No prob man. In the end, they’re gonna do what they feel is best for the team. And despite the celebration and or complaints, we’re all gonna support the team in the end. Green and White Super Bowl in JerryDome this year!!!

  364. avatar Daniel says:

    Ben,

Ward had only .3ypc more than LT, and LT had nearly TWICE as many carries. That should factor in as well. It’s easier to post a higher average with fewer carries.

As noted above, LT was also used a lot in short-yardage situations.

Personally, I’m not crushed about the TJ loss, and I’m not crazy about signing LT, but I think he can be a decent contributor as a tandem back.

I’d personally like to see the Jets get Joe McKnight or Jonathan Dwyer in the 2nd. Maybe Jahvid Best.

    MAN is this class deep!

  365. avatar Super T says:

They’re going after LT because he is still a name and can sell PSLs.

  366. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    LWsquad-

Okay, yes, let’s leave it at that, my friend.

  367. avatar Jimmy Shnoogen says:

Its interesting to me, since Mr. T has that “big spash” stigma attached to his name, and he’s yet to be linked to Brandon Marshall. You gotta think that its because they put a pass rushing DE/LB as a higher priority to draft in the 1st round, right?

  368. avatar ridinmywave says:

Some of you can’t be serious…….and F.Y.I super t, we are bringning him in to be a back up, just like u said. U have yet to make a valid point as to why he doesn’t fit here.

Its funny how everyone is downplaying L.T’s abilities and cursing the guys name but yet I’ve never seen so much excitement and anticipation over us getting our 3RD STRING RUNNING BACK due to the amount of comments I see on this thread.

Why in the hell are people putting so much stock into drafting more young backs etc. as compared to bringing in a vet presence for a couple years for crucial spots and guidance. In case some of you haven’t noticed SHONN GREENE is a our back for the future and LEON WASHINGTON is only 27 for christ sake. Why in God’s name would we invest a draft pick in another young RB?

Please let go of the stupid hissy fits and “sulking on the sideline BS” points being used to slander the guys name because not for nothing the guy is going down as one of the best of all time. I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t be too thrilled and smiling from ear to ear with a camera in your face when your injured and can’t help your team. Some of the points being made are borderline ignorant

  369. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Daniel-

Okay, but all of the other RBs I cited above also had higher YPC than LT as well.

Willie Parker, Mike Bell, Larry Johnson, Brian Westbrook, Justin Fargas, and Derrick Ward.

But let’s agree to agree about the draft: yes, my brother, it sure as hell is deep.

  370. avatar Shadetree says:

Guys TJ did not want to restructure his contract. He could have done so before his bonus came up. He didnt. Thought he would get more on the open market and didnt. Than after the fact the Jets had moved on he wanted back?

  371. avatar rusty sanchez says:

just imagine its like 3rd and 6 and you got leon,LT,braylon, cotch, and keller all on the field at the same time who can cover that????the only chance of getting out of that is if braylon drops it

  372. avatar Marvel says:

Before I go out I’d like to say TJ was OK at best you can run off stats till your blue in the face . The running into the back of the OL trick was getting played out … Not to mention the whole” let me dive at the legs of the first LB I see strategy .. I soooo happy TJ went to KC .. Ben yell out those horrible stats he’ll be shore to rack up next season .. Lol .. But yea TJ wasn’t that good IMO .. Peace & good day .. Or night ..

  373. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Shadetree-

Sorry, none of us know what Mike T offered TJ in the restructuring deal. So we can’t say that TJ got less—or more—than Tanny offered him in the original negotiations.

Then after those negotiations failed, Mike T said publicly that he wanted TJ back after Jones wouldn’t restructure, and after Tanny had cut him.

Then Mike T refused to offer TJ what KC had offered.

And now Mike T is offering LT at least what KC offered TJ, and maybe more.

  374. avatar sackexchange says:

yeah , yeah,, yeah screw stats acording to stats Rhodes was the number 2 saftey

  375. avatar Super T says:

How about because the Jets just let a better RB go in Thomas Jones because they didn’t want to pay him $2.5/3M a year and now they’re going to turn around and give it to a *backup* RB who isn’t even as good as Thomas Jones is. I don’t have a problem with them releasing Thomas Jones because they don’t feel he is worth $2.5/3M a year but don’t turn around and give the same money to a lesser quality back.

  376. avatar JetFan4Life says:

Shadetree – I hear you. I realize it’s a business but you have to say the guy was a beast for us last year, always played hurt and was a leader to a young team. Lesser guys would have mailed it in.

  377. avatar Shadetree says:

What I meant to say Ben is that is a business. I liked TJ a lot. And in my book they should’ve given him the money as a reward for last year. But who knows maybe the Jets know something we dont injury wise. Or in there plans they didnt want to give a back who would carry the ball 5-10 times a game 6 mil for a year.

  378. avatar Shadetree says:

    You read my mind JF4life.lol

  379. avatar Daniel says:

    Ridinmywave,

    We draft another RB because,

    We DO NOT sign LT!

I’m not saying to draft one if we do sign LT.

I just think we should draft a young one INSTEAD of LT.

Greene is still somewhat unproven, no matter how good he might’ve looked down the stretch last season.

Leon is 27, but you NEVER know if someone will be the same player after a broken leg.

A player like McKnight is very explosive and has upside. LT is only declining.

  380. avatar ridinmywave says:

And to compare tj and L.t is a joke. The only thing Tj ever did better than L.t was stay healthy and that was for obvious reasons. The guy ran like a little girl falling down on initial contact so he wouldn’t have to endure any extra abuse, and that’s playing with heart and passion?

You guys fail to recognize how GOOD our o line is, TJ probably left at least an extra 200 yards on the field the past couple years with that little sissy flop he always does. Don’t get me wrong I liked Tj’s presence in the locker room but that’s where it stops. Real tough RB’s usually get injured from embracing the challenge and abuse for their team leaving everything out on the field regardless of who is coming to hit them.

As far as vision, speed, footwork, hands etc. Tj excelled at NONE of those things, I repeatedly see this guy run into his own lineman’s back, fall forward so he won’t get hit or get chased down from behind by a DB because of no break away speed.

Whether u want to deal with it or not L.T is an uprgade over thomas however you look at it, so let’s stop the senseless hate and embrace him and root him on if he ends up here. Some people are just never satisfied….sheesh

  381. avatar atrain says:

All you LT haters will love him by week 5. He is a player you want on the field.. he is still dangerous and will produce in NY. EVERY TEAM IS 3 DEEP AT RB IN THE NFL. GREAT MOVE REX & TAN. SMART SMART MOVE….. WAIT TILL THE 1ST HOME GAME AND HE HAS 2 25 YARD RUNS AND PUTS US IN SCORING POSITION. YOU WILL SEE… PRAY HE COMES HERE…

  382. avatar Ben Nevis says:

Eddie DiGio, Drew, bilal, Super T, JetFan4Life, Daniel, LWsquad, SackDance, Bent & E. Weeks-

Just wanted to say that I’ve enjoyed exchanging posts and reading your posts on this thread.

But I am completely burnt out now.

Gotta turn off the computer, and do something else for a while.

  383. avatar Jetsetter says:

LT will be a back-up to Greene. Remember, he has great hands. You can line him up in the slot. He will tear up opposing LB. He has had over a 100 catches in a season. Nobody on the Jets has done that. He will benefit from his versatilty.

  384. avatar MS says:

All of you guys complaining about losing TJ are crazy. I know LT isn’t the LT of old, but all I know is that when TJ was in the game toward the end of the year I was disappointed. With TJ I knew we were not going to get a big run. With Shonne Greene I expected a big run from him. If we get LT I’m sure we will put him in spots where he can shine and he won’t be the main guy. Everybody is saying TJ was a change of speed for us—-he was—it’s called slow.

  385. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Oh, and you too, Shadetree.

  386. avatar Shadetree says:

Daniel we have too many other needs beside RB to get anyone within the first few rounds. DB, DE, WR
I definitely would like to see a young reciever to complement Sanchez for the next 5 years.

  387. avatar rusty sanchez says:

there were a cople games where if tj didnt break a big run he was going to have a horribe day…with the exception of the indy game week 16 and into the playoffs tj was having a subpar 2nd half of the season…greene, our d, and our schedule saved our season

  388. avatar atrain says:

MCKIGHT WILL STINK IN THE NFL. HE IS TO SKINNY AND SCARED TO GET HIT.

  389. avatar Ed L says:

everyone forgets that TJ ran behind our OLINE and not the CHARGERS OLINE….

LT CAN BE GOOD WITH 12-15 CARRIES A GAME BEHIND OUR OLINE…

TANNY AND REXY MUST KNOW SOMETHING WE DONT!

  390. avatar Shadetree says:

Goodnight Ben. Your passionate and insightful posts were appreciated.

  391. avatar Super T says:

That is funny ridinmywave, you’re bashing TJ for staying healthy and “running like a little girl to avoid initial contact” while he ran for 7 games over 100+ yards and 1400 total yards and at the same time singing the praises of LT who couldn’t stay healthy, had a 3.3 YPC average, and didn’t run for a single game over 100 yards while playing 4 games against the Chiefs and Raiders. Makes perfect sense!

  392. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Wave

I agree with you but dude…TJ was not a guy who fell down to avoid contact. He fell down because he was a muscle bound back who didnt have the feet that a guy like LT does.

LT is versatile as hell, and its not just the Jets that still think he can help us, but cmon bro…dont do TJ like that!!!!

  393. avatar Adam Schefter says:

IT’S OFFICIAL! LT SIGNS 2-YEAR CONTRACT WITH JETS!!!

  394. avatar Shadetree says:

Thats the thing Greene is going to get 20 carries minimum next year a game. I think they wanted to get Leon some work in too around 5-10 maybe screens(before all the interest from teams). I see this more as insurance if anything w/ upside.

  395. avatar Super T says:

    Nite Ben.

  396. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Ben earned his rest today…good stuff from Mr Nevis

    Good night my man

  399. avatar rusty sanchez says:

    adam schefter
where you get that info i jus looked on your twitter page and seen nothing

  400. avatar ridinmywave says:

Smh, Daniel, I guess u just know how to point out any little negative in any situation huh? Lol so I guess we might as well draft anither qb just in case sanchez doesn’t pan out as planned? Smh……tanni didn’t trade up in the draft to nab greene with a sense of being unsure of his abilities…..anybody can see the kid can ball. There’s too much paranoia going here man, lighten up

We’re about to get a future HOF back for a year or two who can obviously contribute in many different ways BEHIND our two young backs and some of you are crying and talking about drafting ANOTHER RB???…….yet an unproven one in the late rounds??….for what!?….RB’s are a dime a dozen, its not that serious.

  401. avatar JetFan4Life says:

Larry Johnson is beyond done. And a dog. LT can make a difference in the locker room. And behind our line.

  402. avatar LWsquad says:

Take ‘er easy Ben….all right, who’s pretending to be Adam Schefter???

  403. avatar andrew says:

off topic but i think the jets should either trade up for grahm or draft dunlap

  404. avatar Daniel says:

I wasn’t talking about McKnight as the feature back, just as a guy who gets 15 touches a game. He’s similar to Reggie Bush but he actually embraces contact more than Reggie. Add a little muscle onto his frame and McKnight could be a special talent.

CJ Spiller is McKnight’s size, and I’ve seen people around here screaming for him as well…

  405. avatar rusty sanchez says:

imagine LT dont sign with the jets because rex jumped on the last mozzarella stick without asking LT

  406. avatar ridinmywave says:

LOL @ Eddie, I had to man……I liked tj too, but I just got a lil flustered

  407. avatar Shadetree says:

I dont know if this has been posted but this can only help Sanchez. He hates throwing the ball away and now will have a viable outlet man to throw to. That was sorely lacking when Lil Leon went down…

  408. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    andrew

If the Jets got Graham I would drive him from where ever he lives to Florahm Park…for free…forever!!!!

  409. avatar Daniel says:

    Ridinmywave,

I don’t care what LT’s body of work says. I don’t care that he’ll make the Hall of Fame. I’m not even THAT opposed to him coming here, I’d just prefer a young guy.

I’d welcome LT with open arms, but I don’t think he’s that big an impact. I don’t care about this leadership talk. Tony Richardson could be a leader. We have leaders on our team. I think that’s a bit overblown.

Why is everyone screaming for a top-notch WR??? Braylon has potential to be very good working with Sanchez for a full year and Cotchery is a good possession receiver. Keller is also a very good looking option who came on late last season. A mid-late round, quick WR would be good enough. We’re a run-first team. Build around defense and the rush!

Believe it or not, I think our receiving options are good enough, especially if we add a WR with upside in the draft. A guy like McKnight or Best could factor into the passing game, and Dwyer would be a good physical runner.

I’m all for whatever Tanny decides, and I change my position on the matter if we do sign LT, but I really would like to add another young RB.

  410. avatar eli says:

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/12/rumors-swirling-that-tomlinson-will-sign-with-jets/

    It might be coming.

P.S. Jones is a starter. We have a guy like him. LT will fit in fine. We dont even know if Washington can do anything yet. The money is a non issue. It is an uncapped year.

  411. avatar Shadetree says:

Hahaaha funny rusty…the stick of shame.

  412. avatar JerryB says:

I don’t think Schotty has that much pull when it comes to player acquisitions. Tanny trusts his scouting staff which is one of the better ones in the league. If they are going hard after LT they are doing so on the recommendation of the scouts. I’m not going to critisize the move before the season starts.

  413. avatar rusty sanchez says:

    shadetree
i agree i said be4 how he can be a safety valve for sanchez and that might be one of the reasons why hell come here instead of the vikings in which brett farve will jus throw a jumpball deep

  416. avatar rusty sanchez says:

i trust the jets if they still think LT has it…their only mistake since mr t been gm is gholston and you cant really hate because if he didnt trade up for matt ryan or mcfadden gholston was what everyone was saying to pick

  419. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    andrew

here is the thing…Im not sure he gets passed the Phins at 12!!! He has now surpassed Kindle as the top DE/OLB hybrid guy in most scouts eyes from what Ive read

Another person said that if he gets passed Miami, the way the draft should play out, we’d swap picks with Cinncy at 20, to make sure we jump ahead of the Pats who pick at 22

And even if they pick Graham at 12, we still could go up and get Kindle at that spot if he is still there

  420. avatar rusty sanchez says:

  422. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

On no doubt man. His burst in the first ten yards and quickness off the line at the Combine was FREAKISH…he just seemed like a blur out of his stance…dont care what he ran in the 40 because QBs dont drop back 40 yards

  423. avatar rusty sanchez says:

I just like Kindle because he wasnt a one year guy like Pierre Paul and he rushed as a DE, dropped back as LB, all the things needed to play in the 3-4. Also, Orakpo was the same type of guy and is turning into a force as a hybrid

Opposing teams knew Kindle was a bad mutha and gameplanned around him…Pierre had Selvie, who came off a monster year, to take some of the focus off him

Graham is the best in my eyes, he is a badass clone of Lamar Woodley…and I love Hughes too because I think that if he was 6’4 or 6’5 with his skills, people would be talking about him as a top ten pick

  430. avatar jake says:

Do you guys think if at 23 Graham is still available would Green Bay do a 1 and 5 bc as a jets fan I do it in a heartbeat.

  437. avatar PickNY says:

It’s nice to hear all you GM’s speak about what you would have done. Folks will judge you too, so stop speculating and trust that Tanny & Crew is working to improve the team. Sometimes, things don’t work out. Managing is a process that takes time, and if something don’t work, move on until you get the results you looking for.

Once again, stop trying to run somebody else”s house, if you don’t want others to run yours. I’m for whoever they choose, because I’m sure they are headin in the right direction according to last year results. Go Jets and Go Rex!

  438. avatar ridinmywave says:

    PickNY,

Speculating and talking with other fans is what makes the offseason fun.

We’re not trying to tell Tanny how to do his job (there’s no chance he’d even see what we’re saying on here), but we’re just saying what we’d LIKE to see happen.

Either way, we do trust his decisions as they’ve worked out in the past, and no matter what we THINK will happen, we’ll always stand by Gang Green and root for the best!

No need to blast others for just speculating on what might happen/what they want to happen.

Even if we disagree, we can all agree that our visions are what’s best for the Jets.

Believe it or not, Tanny might not look at it- but I bet people from the organization do to gauge the pulse of the fanbase…

When the unpopular move to let TJ go happened, the next day or so it came out that the Jets might be looking to bring him back again…

I mean Casserly lost his job for getting Mario Williams (which he was right about) because the fanbase was up in arms

Even when Mangini became wildly unpopular here, he was gone…I dont know it for a fact but I think that someone somewhere from the Jets at least looks to judge how the team is being viewed by its fans

Thats not a bad point. Selvie got a TON of attention after that year and it allowed J PP to be turned loose a little bit.

The knock on Selvie is he is not as quick as you would like a pass rusher who is not that big to be, but he was very productive in college.

People just fall in love with guys who have long arms and display some athleticism at the DE position, but if they dont have the heart, instincts or technique they wind up like Ghost…JPP could def fit that mold

  449. avatar rusty sanchez says:

i have a feeling gholston might finally come out of his shell this year…cause out of fear if he dont play well he will be cut and playing in the canadian league…i hope i am right cause that would be really huge for our d…either way we have to draft a pass rusher

  450. avatar rusty sanchez says:

wow jus found out not also welker recovering from the knee injury he also has a torn rotator cuff

  451. avatar E. Weeks says:

    ridinmywave,

I believe the most comments TJB has had was during the AFC Championship gamethread which had 1,249 comments.

  452. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    rusty-you are right 100%

If Ghost can step up and become a guy who gets 5 sacks a year, this defense will go up yet another level and it will save his career

Rex and Tanny have publicly stated that this is a make or break year for him…all we can do is pray that the light goes on

But yes, we have to draft a pass rusher because even if Gholston becomes a good 3-4 end, he was still drafted to be an edge rusher and unfortunately that experiment is over

Have a feeling that the guy Rex wants to be “that guy”, will turn out to be “that guy” this time

  453. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

dude I heard Welker is out until AT LEAST Halloween this year- the Pats invinciblity has officially crumbled in the AFC East

  454. avatar phil says:

A lot of you are missing the point here. We are looking for a receiving back from third downs cause greene is our man on first and second. Tomlinson has fantastic hands, much better than thomas jones or greene. So for those of you saying tomlinson is not an upgrade over jones, i would say in terms of a receiving back he is, not even close.

  455. avatar rusty sanchez says:

plus everyone talking about westerman too… he had a sack against the texans and was never heard from again does anyone know why he didnt crack the rotation after???

  456. avatar rusty sanchez says:

i was tryin to say be4 on 3rd downs this year we can have LT leon braylon keller and cotch all on the field at the sametime which is pretty scary…plus one of sanchezs bright spots las year was his 3rd down conversions…thas why i feel no matter how old he is and how little gas he got in the tank LT should still be a great pickup for that reason alone

  457. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

LT can also pickup blitzes…he is a very smart player in that regard

  458. avatar Greengoblin says:

Sign LT already!!!! The guy is still a great RB!!!!

  459. avatar Harvlis says:

Most fans realize that LT is done — Turn him over. To pay him more than TJ is a joke. Schottenheimer is more of a peabrain than I thought. This is like the Mets getting Willie Mays or the Knicks getting Penny. Save the money and draft a RB in the fourth round. At least that player will be in the league, in two years.

  460. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Harvlis

LT is done as a feature back in the league- he could be very effective carrying the ball around a 100 times and catching 40-50 passes.

He is not being brought in here to be a savior-just help the team in areas that TJ could not-he would never even start

I guess Brad Childress is a peabrain also…last time I checked he was going HARD after LT too…

  461. avatar bobbyj says:

This move is about green..Notice thomas jones did’nt sign w/minny or any other contender..He want’s the bulk of the carriers, not to be a backup..He still see’s himself as a starter..TJ was a very popular player/leader in locker room..reducing his role caused waves last year(rumors of this were given for his decreased production in a backup role to shone green).Shone green is the future..Lt I believe will flurish behind this line & he is WILLING to accept a lesser role…He is also a far superior pass catcher…Jet’s need pic’s..depth is a problem, with the limited pic’s we have had…Leon is a goner if somone gives up a 2nd rounder

  462. avatar dakar says:

as some1 said before…LT can be used perfectly out of the slot…with greene/leon in the back field…hell,we can have all 3 in on certain plays…all 3 are legit play makers…defenses wont know what to do if all 3 were on the field…imagine the possibilities…just my thoughts…

  463. avatar clint says:

I seen the chargers signed Donald Strickland.

  464. avatar Harvlis says:

    Eddie,

I would rather see Leon get those catches out of the backfield. $7Mil for a back who is going to run it 100 times would be a waste of money. LT is a player who is on the way down. I would rather build a backfield that will be around for more than one or two years. We need someone who can help us with the ground and pound. A back-up for Greene, if he gets hurt again or comes down with fumblitis. As for Childress, I am sure that lots of coaches and GM’s wanted Gholston, coming out of college. Who cares what others do — What is good for the future of the Jets.

  465. avatar F-16 says:

With some of the other needs that the Jets have I don’t feel that picking up a “seasoned” running back is what we need. As an example, when Curtis Martin, who I liked, was at the end of his career he wouldn’t fight for that extra yard anymore. In my opion it seemed like he didn’t want to get hurt anymore. I feel that LT is at that point also. I’d rather see us adress the roster spot with a rookie who wants to prove something to the world and save the money for lets say a seasoned pass rusher.

  466. avatar F-16 says:

Keep in mind that unless LT still feels like he wants to prove something he knows if he signs here he’s going to have to work for his paycheck as opposed to a possible riding the coatails of a team, Vikes, where he might not have to earn his pay.

  467. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Harvlis

First off, LT is regarded as one of the top 5 pass catching backs of ALL TIME. He runs routes like a WR, can pick up blitzes, and overall just adds so much to a passing game. Not to mention, he is running behind the best o line in the NFL. That Charger o line was a finesse line, that could not move people off the ball

Childress is an established quality head coach and top notch offensive coordinator. He comes from the Andy Reid school of coaches, the guy knows who can play and cant play. Also, Gholston was a college prospect, not a PROVEN FUTURE HOFer, thats a horrible comparison…its apples and oranges

Drafting a RB in that spot is not prudent to our team. This draft is about bringing in guys to make this a defense that can win a Super Bowl by itself, circa the 01 Ravens…not about drafting a guy to play RB when we have Leon and a 22 year old stud who almost ran the Jets to the Super Bowl on his back.

LT is only being brought in to spell Greene, catch some passes, pick up blitzes and bring a veteran prescence to the backfield- you want TJ instead, thats a different story for a different time- but TJ is gone and he aint coming back, and LT may not be the smash mouth runner TJ is, but he is better in every other aspect of the game.

The team would be better because we could use that pick to draft for depth on defense or use it to move up possibly to get a pass rusher…LT gives the Jets MORE options on draft day

  468. avatar Harvlis says:

    Eddie,

Matching the Chiefs offer for TJ was the move. Signing LT is going backwards. He is good for PSL’s and not our future. Actually, while being used poorly by Schottenheimer — Leon has a better yards per catch than LT.

My point, concerning Childress, is not that he is a bad coach. Just because he thinks that picking up LT would be good for him, does not make it good for the Jets. Using your logic — Bellichek doesn’t want LT, does that me he would be a bad pick up for the Jets.

Leon has a future — LT is over with.

  469. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Harvlis

No. It wasnt the move. TJ wanted to get paid. The Jets tried to renegotiate with him and he wouldnt do it. So when he didnt get the money that he thought he was going to get, he came back to the Jets hoping they would match. TJ is now going to play for a 4-5 win team in KC, while the Jets are still in the championship hunt. Have fun TJ- losing and running behind a makeshift o line. I guess the grass is not greener…TJ did it to himself

Secondly, Childress wants LT for the same role the Jets want him for!!! New England needs a stud RB, not a backup, they have 4 of those guys!!! Not to mention, LT hates New England, he would NEVER go there!!! I am using my logic- a good offensive team wants the same guy to backup their featured back, the same thing we want him for…

I love Leon, but seriously, dont even compare Leon to LT. LT won me a lot of dough in fantasy, and Ive seen the guy play every Sunday or Mon night for 6 years. LT is done as a feature back. But on team with an o-line that moves people off the ball-and the Jets have one like that- his YPC would go up because he could just hit the hole, instead of trying to get out of the backfield first then make yardage…

And Im not saying he would hurt tickets sales…but I am a die hard and Im not running out to invest in PSL because they signed LT. People are not that stupid

But Im telling you he can be an effective backup here, I put my name on it. And if he came here and sucked, Id be man enough to tell you I was wrong…

    Eddie,

I know that you see a future Hall of Famer and you want him to regain the magic with the Jets. I promise you, I would love to see that too. I just feel that LT is going downhill, at this point in his career. Just like you, if he proved me wrong, I would be happy to admit it.

You’re right though…I am biased a little bit. LT was my fantasy “keeper” from when he broke out til about a year ago.
And I won money and most importantly, I won s#ittalking rights over all my buddies, as I reigned in fantasy greatness…lol

I still think there is something there…but at the same we might be getting ahead of ourselves as he might not even ever sniff being a Jet
