He Must Have Been Swayed

by Bassett on March 13th, 2010 at 10:11 am

Although it looks like it didn’t come to fruition, the Daily News reported last night on their blog that there was a

… “possibility” that LaDainian Tomlinson will make a decision tonight, according to a person close to the Tomlinson courtship — a strong indication that the Jets will prevail over the Vikings for the future Hall-of-Fame running back.

Obviously there’s no news yet, and I’d be curious to know who said it was a possibility, because if LaDainian made a promise to his wife they’d talk about it together and then didn’t? OOOOO-ee!!! I know how that goes in my house. I can’t imagine it’s much different anywhere else.

If LT was thinking that heavily about it, it means the Jets put on a good pressure package. At this point, they’ve done their best. And that’s all those who would like to see this can ask.

If YOU want to let Tomlinson know you are supportive, hop on Twitter and put the hashtag #LT2NYJ in a tweet and send a message. We started this yesterday, and as you can see, it’s been a rousing success. Antonio Cromartie (his former teammate) even agreed to pass along a heads up to LaDainian about it.

    Bassett-

We went over all this last night again and again on the million-post thread, but I think it’s worth pointing out that the “possibility” that LT would make a quick decision, and that this would favor the Jets, and that LT and the Jets are close to a deal—all of this is just rumor.

And I think we have to remember that rumors are, well, rumors.

They could be planted by one side or another, just to stir the pot, just to put a scare into someone.

For instance, LT’s agent could be spreading these rumors–-about LT & the Jets being close to a deal—on background (ie, without attribution), just to get the Vikings to blink, and make an offer.

Yes, there’s the possibility that something may be happening.

But then there’s also the possibiity that these rumors are just pure air.

  2. avatar Scouse Jet says:

We should have sent Woody’s jet to pick up Mrs LT and get the thing signed last night.

That said I think he’ll be in green and white by tonight.

  3. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    One more thing, Bassett-

You seem to be lobbying here for readers to go on Twitter and send LT a message: that we WANT him.

Well, I think it’s worth noting at least two points here:

    _______________________

    1. It wasn’t just TJ who had a higher YPC than LT.

Last year ALL of the other major FA backs had a higher YPC than LT :

Willie Parker, Mike Bell, Larry Johnson, Brian Westbrook, Justin Fargas, and Derrick Ward.

Fargas had a higher YPC than LT, and he played for the lowly Raiders.

Ward had a higher YPC than LT, and he played for one of the worst teams in the league, the Bucs.

LT had a 3.3 YPC, and he played for a SUPER BOWL CONTENDER.

    __________________________

    2. In terms of wear-and-tear mileage, career touches (carries and receptions that a RB has had over the course of his career), except for Derrick Ward, all of the backs I cited above—Willie Parker, Mike Bell, Larry Johnson, Brian Westbrook, Justin Fargas—all of them have about 1,400 career touches.

Ward has about 550 career touches.

LT has about 3,500 career touches.

That means that Tomlinson has about 2,000 MORE career touches than almost any of the other major FA backs.

And LT has 3,000 more career touches than Ward.

That’s a hell of a lot of mileage on one very used car.

  4. avatar SackDance99 says:

A lot of blogging power is being spent on a move that won’t really make the Jets a better team. Leon’s health and return to his old game-breaking self is much more important than Greene’s back up, especially since I think it’s a cinch that the Jets will draft an RB whether LT signs or not.

  5. avatar Gastineau's Lost Brain says:

I don’t get it. I understand the argument (although I don’t particularly agree) that with Jones they were following the old adage “better to drop a player one year early than one year late”. But “late” has already come, gone, and disappeared over the rainbow for LT. Why would they even think about spending money here that they could have used to keep Jones?

Let’s see… hm. Maybe I can answer my own question. After all, It’s not like this team has ever brought in a guy just for his name in order to sell some additional PSLs, have they…

  6. avatar j pizzle says:

Stop with the rb comparisons , we get it already . I’m all for LT hell he might even be the starter come opening day

  7. avatar dakar says:

    sack

i agree for the most part but LT will be equal 2 or better than TJ…just my thoughts…

  8. avatar Wolf says:

Tonight you will hear LT signs 2 year 6-7 million dollar deal with NY.

    Better option than TJ

  9. avatar SackDance99 says:

    dakar,

I don’t disagree, but all I’m saying is that there are a lot of vet RBs available (and we’ve all cited the usual suspects) that could fill the back up role. I think LT was, by far, the best of them all, but he doesn’t have much, if anything, left in the tank and he’d be more expensive than Fargas or Parker and maybe even Westbrook, who talent-wise is no. 2 to LT. IS LT quality depth at a crucial position for the Jets, sure. Could he be better than the other options? I’m not too sure of that. FWIW, I don’t think this is a PSL move. Schotty has a history with LT and I’m guessing that he’s driving the bus on this one.

  10. avatar Elroy JETSon says:

Lol @ the jets treating LT like our 1st rd pick and treating TJ like a UDFA smdh…

  11. avatar Eric in StL says:

guys, no offense, but justin fargas and mike bell (or anyone of that caliber) is worth it for this team- bring in a future hall of famer and draft a young RB in the 4th so we can have two studs groomed by one of the best. LT will be great in green and white with their zone-blocking schemes. and ENOUGH of Thomas Jones (Mr. two yards and fall over)- LT is 10x the player he is- let’s get it done Tanny

  12. avatar Eric in StL says:

“is NOT worth it for this team”

    ha- Freudian slip?

  13. avatar andrew says:

    Ben
I was apart of that million post thread too last night
You cant compare LTs ypc to other running backs. two components that have to be considered are LT had a horrible o-line and he was used on goalline carries so that right there doesnt help out your ypc.
I’m not trying to be mean to TJ but if you put him on a different team (like the chiefs) his ypc isnt going to be that great either
TJ can create his own holes to run but LT can

  14. avatar mike says:

I like that tominlson is a great catcher out of the backfield. We aren’t depending on L T to carry the load by himself. Can u imagine on a 3rd and 5 having L T at full back and leon as r b braylon jerchio and keller at there positions. It will give us a lot of options.

  15. avatar SackDance99 says:

    mike,

If LT and Leon are in on 3rd and 5, I have one word for you: BLITZ!!!! LOL.

  16. avatar dakar says:

    sack

    i agree…

  17. avatar jvsvn says:

Obviously, LT’s numbers haven’t been very good the last couple of years (except, of course, TDs – not a small thing). But numbers don’t always tell the story. I don’t know what the deal is, I haven’t scouted LT. The thing that gives me some comfort is that the Jets have scouted him, and not just because he is a free agent. We just played the Chargers in a HUGE playoff game. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Jets went back and broke down every San Diego running play from this past season or something close to every one of them in preparation for that game. They had to do something like that. If the tape from this season showed that LT was the problem with the running game, the Jets certainly would know it by now. Based on their interest in LT, I can only assume that they came to the opposite conclusion – that LT was being misused or underused or the blocking scheme was wrong or something. All I know is that the Jets aren’t pursuing LT based on his history or reputation. They have looked at a ton of recent tape. They had to. Does that mean that their conclusions are correct? Of course not. But their interest does seem genuine and it doesn’t come from nowhere.

  18. avatar Eric in StL says:

    sack and dakar,

isn’t LT one of the best RBs at picking up the blitz? i thought i read that somewhere

  19. avatar dakar says:

    eric

    i wasn’t agreeing to the blitz comment…

just yesterday i said it would be something to have all 3 of our RB’s on the field…that being LT is part of the team…

greene and leon in the back field and LT in the slot…go ahead…blitz all you want…not to mention edwards and cotch/keller wide out…play action any1…just my thoughts…

  20. avatar Andy says:

Listen. I liked TJ. He did great for the Jets. But maybe we don;t know the whole story. Maybe TJ’s knees are a bigger issue than we know. Who knows. Maybe the Jets wanted LT when they found out he was released and that was TJ’s demise? THe thing is nobody know exactly what happened. If LT signed I would be happy it would be another good option at RB who can catch the ball out of the backfield well. Anyone thinking that LT is going to be the main back and that is the reason they don’t want him is dumb. LT has made it clear he knows his role now will be a back up. LT I think provides more options with what you can do on offense than TJ. TJ and Green are similar where they are at best pounding the ball up the middle. But I wouldn’t be heart broken either if LT doesn’t come to the Jets.

  21. avatar ramble914 says:

    Ben Nevis,

I think you need to come to the conclusion that there is something wrong with TJ that we don’t know about.

Remember last season? TJ did not practice during the week in Dec and Jan. and they cited his knees as the reason. Also look at TJ performance in the AFC Champ game, he had nothing left.

We need to have our best players available in Jan. and TJ clearly had nothing left.

  22. avatar MS says:

Schefter is reporting LT is flying back to SD to make his decision. I guess we’ll know either tonight or at least before the weekend is over.

  23. avatar dakar says:

LT also brings more speed than TJ…DEFENSES WILL HAVE TO RESPECT JETS RUNNING GAME EVEN MORE SO WITH LT…just my thoughts…

  24. avatar JP from LA says:

    ADAM SCHEFTER on TWITTER REPORTS:

“While he mulls his choice between NY and Minn., LaDainian Tomlinson now is flying back to San Diego, free to think it through.”

    So no deal now.

  25. avatar RJF says:

He wont sign fellas, its been a smoke screen and bull$#!% since he first got here. He either wants to go to Minny or N.O., probably Minny the most. It reminds me of Antoine Winfield and how he b.s. us and signed w/ Minny. If he wanted to sign then it would’ve happened last night or this morning. I say to Hell w/ him sign Mike Bell and as someone suggested draft like a Charles Scott or someone in the later rounds. THE JETS MAIN GOAL (AND THIS IS JUST BEING BRUTALLY HONEST), is to trade Leon. Their praying someone falls in love w/ leon’s “possibility” of returning to form to sign him to a deal. I guarantee you even w/ no poison pill added, the Jets wont match it. They know just like any other team that this draft is at least 5 rounds deep. You’ll get a guy in the 4th that could’ve went in the 2nd any other year than this one.

They have a plan, but their goal is to sign LT2 so that’ll push Leon even further out of the door.

  26. avatar Give Leon The Damn Ball says:

TJ is so done and it isnt even funny. did you guys see him at the end of regular season and playoffs? he provided NOTHING. he looked old and slow.

i’m not suggesting that LT is better than TJ at this point, but he is at least more dynamic of a player and could be a threat catching the ball out of the back field.

  27. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    ramble914-

I’ve debated the TJ question again and again and again and again and again, and I don’t think I can bear to cover that ground again.

Let’s just note (as I did above) that LT’s YPC last year—3.3.—was lower than any other major FA back, Willie Parker, Mike Bell, Larry Johnson, Brian Westbrook, Justin Fargas, and Derrick Ward.

And for those of you who say that LT had a weaker O line than the Jets, sure, I grant you that. But did SD also have a weaker O line than the teams of every single one of these FA backs?

LT was on a SUPER BOWL CONTENDER.

Parker was not on a SB contender, Westbrook was not, Fargas was on the lowly Raiders, and Ward was on one of the worst teams in the league, the Bucs.

    _______________________________

Also, as I noted above, LT has more—way more—wear-and-tear mileage—more career touches—than any other FA back.

    _________________

Willie Parker, Mike Bell, Larry Johnson, Brian Westbrook, Justin Fargas:

    about 1,400 career touches each.

    _________________

    Derrick Ward

    about 550 career touches

    ____________________

    LaDainian Tomlinson:

    about 3,500 career touches

    ____________________

Which means that LT has about 2,000 MORE career touches than any other major FA back.

And LT also has 3,000 more career touches than Ward.

That’s a hell of a lot of wear and tear on LT’s tires.

  28. avatar dakar says:

    RJF

charles scott missed most of last year due to a broken collar bone…

a late late rounder or pick him up as a undrafted FA…he will be a steal…238 lbs and can break a big run…he’s worth a look…just my thoughts…

  29. avatar Green Lantern "I WANT BERRY" says:

    BEN SHUT UP!
I mean repeating this information isn’t changing anything.

  30. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

    Ben Nevis

The issue is that LT played for a broken down 3rd string Oline. The line in SD (where I live) was so hurt last year it wasn’t funny. They at one point had to go completely away from the run. LT can catch balls out of the backfield also, which is something else TJ could not do. Plus the mentoring he can provide Shonne is far more worth the money than what Derrick Ward provides.

  31. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    CA JETS FAN-

Sproles has the same O line that LT had, and Sproles had a better YPC than LT.

AS DID EVERY OTHER MAJOR FREE AGENT RUNNING BACK.

But I see that I’ve made this point before on other threads. Which is a sure sign of the tediousness this subject has come to have for me, after debating it again and again and again and again, on last night’s million-post thread, as well as other threads.

So I think I need a break. I think this will be my last post on this subject for a while.

  32. avatar andrew says:

    Ben
I was apart of that million post thread too last night

  33. avatar Ben Nevis says:

Sorry, Andrew, I need a break from this subject, at least for a while.

  34. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Green Lantern-

Thanks for being so civil about it.

Just said (twice) that I’m taking a break, and I am.

    Good day, sir.

  35. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

    Ben that is fine.

Sproles also had far less carries than LT as did Ward (injury), Parker (injury), and Westbrook (injury).

I love TJ, but he clearly lost his gas last year. Shonne has not proven he can play a full load yet. We need a vet to groom him. I do not agree with paying LT more than TJ. TJ has proved time and again he is a locker room guy. He is great for the team, and the best we have had since the great CMART. LT could be lightning in a bottle for 1 year. He could compliment Shonne to where we have 2 1000 yard backs and a combined 20 TDs which would be nice. It would also give Leon some more time to get healthy (if he comes back). If Leon goes to Minny or SF, then we draft a guy. There are plenty of Leon Washingtons in the draft in round 3 and below. There are very few every down consistent backs.

On another subject (LEON). I was the guy that wanted us to pay him more than anyone. Bottom line, is he is another Kevin Faulk. He is not as good as Cribbs, or Jones-Drew, or Westbrook. He is not as versatile as those guys, and now is coming off of a career changing injury. He is another great team guy. A real feel good guy, but I prefer Brad Smith out of the wild-cat (seminole..whatever), and we can draft another guy for the next 4 years that can do almost what Leon does. Even Sproles is..in my opinion..a bit better than Leon and SD was just horrible to franchise him last year and pay him about 13 mill over 2 years..

Off my soap box..by the way Ben, you never have to debate. It is your opinion and you make great points. I just do not agree with all of them. You are great for this blog and bring real data. Thanks!

  36. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Okay, thanks CA JETS FAN.

    Last thing, though:

    ____________________________

  37. avatar Brad says:

Totally OFF TOPIC- Bent or Anyone else- Can someone explain to me why Faneca is considered so good, and were paying him a fortune when according to Profootballfocus- he is considered one of the worst guards in the league for the past 3 seasons? Are these statical numbers on Profootballfocus accurate- they have D’brick, Woody, Mangold, Moore all in the top 10 for the Last 2 season for their position!

  38. avatar TJBfan says:

Yeah Ben we all understand the stats, no need to repost them. The Jets know his YPC too…don’t care about it. The Jets want him for goal line + short yardage situations, the long list of stats means nothing for that role!

I think LT has enough left to be a good backup like Fred Taylor was for Jones-Drew except LT can be a pass threat

  39. avatar Dylan says:

    Ben Nevis,

Sproles had a 3.7 YPC. Thats awful for a 3rd down back.

I also don’t get how everybody rips LT for his performance in the playoffs, even though TJ was just as bad. At least LT has some good excuses though. He has a terrible offensive line and had a bad game against a great Jets defense. TJ on the other hand had THREE terrible games in the playoffs, two of them against bad defenses. TJ also has a great o-line, and Shonn Greene had no problem running behind it.

  40. avatar Green Lantern "I WANT BERRY" says:

Im just sick of seeing you post the same thing over and over again like it will change the FO’s mind.

  41. avatar Eric in StL says:

i think he’s going to the vikings guys- based on his leaving. perhaps the vikes got freaked out they were going to lose him and called to up their offer. not a good sign…

  42. avatar Brad says:

Also – if this analysis is true of Faneca- I dont see how he will be on the team after this season! Making way too much money for a person who is not elite- believe around 8mil the next couple of seasons. His pass blocking was pathetic and even his run blocking was very poor!

  43. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

    Ben,

I saw that from Schefter. I never thought he would make a decision before he went home. He is a religious family man, and will take the time needed for his wife to be comfortable (who just had a new born baby recently). Also, he is an amazing community guy here in SD. His charities and work with kids are phenomenal. May not matter to most people, but he can teach some of the young kids on our team how to do things the right way over a career. Especially guys that will be in green and white for a very long time like:

Harris, Revis, D BRick, Mangold, Sanchez, and maybe Shonne …

? for all: are we going to or can we even make a play for Sharper? Is Poole gonna start? I think we should make a play for Sharper and have Poole as a rotation guy with his injury history.

If we get IMO LT, Sharper, a slot receiver and then draft a pass rusher and depth on the OL and DL, we can win a SB barring injury.

  44. avatar Andy says:

Hey can someone tell me what LT’s yards per carry was last season was? I’m not sure….lol.

  45. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

His goalline vision is great. I remember TJ taking 4 tries to not make it in the endzone last year. TJ is built on force and taking it to the D. LT is built on vision and quickness. He lost quickness, but still has vision.

Agree on the playoff comments. He was hurt..it happens.

  46. avatar Gridiron0072 says:

    Guys,
Stats are numbers and numbers are figures. Figures never lie and liars never figure. To just use stats as a basis of argument is just that.. argument. The proof is in the action which is recorded on tape. TJ couldn’t “see” a hole if he fell in it! His stats are inflated tremendously because the OL wore down defenses and the OC stayed with the running game and TJ would break one 40 yd run and elevate his game stats. LT has lost a step and a bounce, but he does hit the hole and more important can see the hole open. I am more concerned over LT lack of playing time during the playoffs but that shouldn’t be a factor if his number of carries are shared with the other 2 backs. The loss of TJ is no where as bad as most predict. Whether it is LT or Mike Bell or however, the back must be able to read the zone scheme, hit the hole and pass protect….

  47. avatar brightfuture says:

Come on anyone that argues that there are better backs than LT and then put Fargas and derrick ward into a category a better debunks the entire argument its like saying o TJ is twice as good as beanie wells or tim hightower bc his stats are so good

  48. avatar Brad says:

I believe LT was hurt all season last year. He injured his ankle in the first game of the season, then missed a couple of games. Probably wasnt right all season- that could attribute to his poor season last year.

  49. avatar Nafstejyn says:

    LMAO Andy

  50. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Like I stated last night….the Jets were the underdog to get LT….if he lefted the building without a deal he will sign with the Vikings.

His 1st choice was the Vikings…The Jets rolled out the red carpet and in my mind could :change” LT’s mind. I would be stunned if he signed here now.

Even though I think we are a better fit…. the NY media will play a factor in this. IMO LT is a pretty small town guy and has to think even as a 3rd down back he is replacing a popular player in TJ. If he struggles (even as a 3rd down back) he will get killed in the papers here.

Hopefully now we can gear towards signing another guy or draft a kid that can do what LT does and probably better

  51. avatar Green Lantern "I WANT BERRY" says:

Andy- LOL Thats exactly what im saying.

  52. avatar bilal says:

Brad- You really cant just go on that website. Faneca is still one of the best pulling guards in the NFL- if you watch the games you can see how and Richardson pave the way on those pulling runs. Yes hes not good against pass rushing interior defensive lineman but if we simply relied on that website we would say that Pouha and Devito are both better than Ratliff and Ngata. I know they both had really good years within the Jets system but they are certainly not better players.

j pizzle – I would be very disappointed if we had to turn to LT as a starting RB if shonn greene is 100% and ready to go.

  53. avatar bilal says:

Also Brad- according to that site Nnamdi is the 12 best CB in the NFL and we know thats not true.

  54. avatar bobbyj says:

Once again this move is more about shone green & chemistry then you blogers care about. I get the feeling that many of you were never athelets(& i was never a spelling champ). It’s not all about numbers.Thomas Jones did’nt go to a contender as a 31 year old backup. He went to a rebuilding team to be a feature back….You have to go w/the future & we all know it’s green..Lt is a better receiving option then Tj & leon is a goner if somone/anyone gives up a second rounder. Am I the only one that noticed that leon was’nt having a killer season before he got hurt?

  55. avatar j pizzle says:

Bilal I’m just saying you never know LT might have A great offseason and be the LT of old. Then you’d have to start hiim right ?

  56. avatar david harris says:

I dont think the Chargers ever wont the superbowl, therefore LT will want to come to a contender. Which is why Minnesota and the Jets are his main 2 teams. However its notable to say that Minnesota also has a offensive line geared for pass and not rush. If i were a player i wouldnt just want to be a long for the ride, i’d like to be an integral part of a team’s success, and LT would essentially be a worse version of Chester Taylor in that offense. Also, take Brett Favre off of that Vikings team, and they immediatley get down graded.

However, the Jets offensive line made Thomas Jones look like a 25 year old running back. You all seem to be forgetting TJ’s struggles last season. He began the season awfully slow, which in my mind was a mix between his poor conditioning + the offensive line getting into the swing of things + his age. When the offensive line kicked in TJ kicked in. And not to mention but TJ was virtually invisible in quarters 1-3 in almost all games last year until he had like 2 45 yard runs in the 4th quarter. The only 2 games he shined in were Buffalo and Oakland… Now I dont think LT would get as many touches as TJ did this season… LT had 110 less carries than TJ did last season! But he only had 2 less touchdowns, and played in 1 less game. Ben Nevis — he may have less YPC than those rbs, and he may have more milage than those rbs, but he’s more productive than all of them. Say what you want but the main goal of football is to score touchdowns and LT has an unnatural tendency of finding his way into the endzone. What’s also more appealing than Minnesota is that NY is moving into a new stadium + he will be a bigger part of this offense + the atmosphere in NY as well as on the jets in particular (with rex ryan’s bravado and confidence) + will have a better offensive line to make him look better.

LT also has had personal problems with San Diego these last few seasons. This whole thing could just be a motivation problem. San Diego flat out changed from relying on LT to relying to Phillip Rivers. That’s a smack in the face if you’re LT and could have affected his motivation on the field and working out.

There are many more factors that some of you can’t account for. The stats show one thing but there are always factors that are unaccounted for. I’d be happy with LT on the team. He’d offer veteran leadership, he’d offer a 3rd rb, and stability, and he’d also contribute to a great extent on the field. I believe we’ll catch lightning in a bottle at least for 1-2 seasons with him

  57. avatar CCDC says:

None of this matters anymore. NFLshop.com is already selling LT’s Viking jersey. There’s a link on pro football talk. The Jets are probably going to look to the draft for a RB.

  58. avatar nyjetsman says:

why is YPC the most important stat ever made. People are forgetting that the chargers were built to pass.

Lt could help Sanchez when he gets in trouble, Sanchez would never throw to TJ when nothing was happening.

  59. avatar CVega says:

Its over guys….NFLSHOP.COM is Mini LT jerseys

  60. avatar CVega says:

    ^is sellling

  61. avatar rusty sanchez says:

what happened las year when washington went down??? we had no receiving back now with LT we will have 2 im sure this will help sanchez keep his ints down next year knowing he has a future hofer waiting for a screen pass when being pressured

  62. avatar Eric in StL says:

ummm- i don’t think that these jerseys are any real indication of anything. you think they’d be the first to know???

  63. avatar bubbybrister/shovelpass says:

here’s my feelings on this. I think LT (who has stated he has never been a FA before), is just basking in the glow of everyone swooning over him. He will sign with Minny. He is just using NY to drive the price and “feel the love” while he can still get some. In fact, I’d be shocked if he didn’t take a trip to NO too. This guy is just enjoying the “Reggie White listening tour”. As for me, I don’t think he has much in the tank left. I would rather see Mike Bell as an afforadbale backup, and draft another RB towards the end of the draft.
I can’t believe no one has mentioned Woodhead yet!
    D’oh! (I just did!) lol

  64. avatar rusty sanchez says:

im goin by schefters twitter page and theres no indication of LT signing with minni yet

  65. avatar bilal says:

Bobby j – How could you say Thomas Jones went to a team to be the feature back? Hes going to back up Jamal Charles- the guy who averaged 121 yards a game during the last 8 games of the season(when he finally got the starting job) for a total of 1100 yards behind a suspect offensive line. He’s going to KC to do exactly what LT would be coming to do here. Probably wasnt your real point but still.

  66. avatar bilal says:

j pizz- Yea provided the Jets sign him and he looked like the old LT in August- it would be a decision theyd have to make- I just dont see LT being that player anymore.

  67. avatar bilal says:

Bobbyj – I agree Leon wasnt having a killer season before he got hurt- he even had some big drops but the jets running game really didnt get going till after he got hurt. TJ wasnt doing all that much either till about the middle of the season.

  68. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Guys…..Once LT left. He was signing with the Vikings. Now the OJ Simpson type coverage for this broken down RB can come to halt and we can move on to a better option for this team.

  69. avatar bilal says:

Brads emergence in the wildcat offense probably has made it easier to think of the Jets without Leon for the FO. Leon was the ex factor but Brad took over that role and would probably do more of that next year if someone is willing to give up a 2nd for Leon.

  70. avatar bilal says:

AKA- you were saying this yesterday but you really can’t make that assumption. You’re saying it as fact but in reality- we have no idea what hes thinking. Maybe he really does need to talk to his family first then decide instead of using the Jets as leverage- I’m not saying this is definitely true I’m just saying none of us know.

  71. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Its just the way I am thinking….the Jets had to blow this guy away to sway him let alone get him. I doubt he ever had any intention of signing here. His agent did his job by getting him in the building and getting teams to offer money to compare to the Vikings. I might be 100% wrong but IMO he is gone and will be in Minn tomorrow for a press conference.

    and I will be happy.

  72. avatar Brad says:

I agree Bilal- I think part of the FO’s plan was to get LT so they can trade Leon! On Faneca- He is only great at Pulling, everything else he is average at best. I still think with all the guys they are going to have to resign next season that Faneca will be cut next year to so save them 9 mil/season

  73. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

At first I didnt think it was going to happen…then all the buzz last night got me thinking it was…but Im going with my first instinct that LT is going to be a Viking

We’ve all seen the stats-even though stats dont tell the full story because they dont take into account o line play or short yardage situations- a carry on 3rd and 1 that gains 1.5 yards counts the same as 12 yard run on 3rd and 16- but my point is this…

If LT came here, I think he could help the team. Are there better guys out there? Probably so. Would Tanny and Co rather pickup a veteran RB and devote the draft to bringing stud defenders and depth in the secondary? It sure looks like it

LT2 can help this team as long as he is brought in here to be a backup, help Chez out with some checkdowns, and provide some veteran leadership to Greene…I am sure of it

  74. avatar NamVetJet says:

I’m jumping on the Eddie/AKA Drew bandwagon. LT not coming to NY and we will find someone else to fill his role.

  75. avatar rusty sanchez says:

i wonder if the vikings FO ended up at the same restaurant “accidently” like a jilted ex

  76. avatar Bent says:

    Re: Faneca/PFF

The numbers say that Faneca was terrible for the first half of the season, but good in the second half and also that be has been poor in pass protection for years.

I absolutely agree. My own film study confirmed this. He was great at the end of the year though.

However, last year they changed their blocking scheme and as the key cog, Faneca was the one most effected, but once they got it going, he was dominant. He makes a lot of gamebreaking blocks but also a lot of mistakes, so no performance analysis is likely to reflect well.

That’s my rationale for the stats, but you don’t need stats to tell you Faneca is still capable of dominance (hopefully all year now the zone blocking scheme is established), but is also not the same player he once was and does make mistakes. Contrast that with Moore and Woody, who are consistent and solid but not often the guy to make the key block and you can see why they ranked higher, despite the fact Faneca is just as (if not more) important.

  77. avatar DKnyj says:

To me it’s quite simple. When you watch games, it’s painfully obvious how slow Thomas Jones is. When Shonne Greene gets the ball – he explodes through the hole.

TJ would have been a back-up – 100% – no one should argue with that. Why pay a 3M roster bonus to a back up? what’s the point? The key ingredient that differentiates LT and TJ is that LT is a GREAT receiver out of the backfield. This would be a tremendous asset to #6. Also – we could probably line him up in the slot- TJ? Don’t think so.

  78. avatar James in TN says:

I hope LT signs with the Vikings, and we draft Montario Hardesty . Youth is the factor, just ask TJ who got screwed out of his contract.

  79. avatar Richie Rich says:

Derrick Ward isnt a free agent so why do u keep posting that he has better ypc than LT? I agree LT is probably done and everything but so are most of those RBs since they are all over 30.

We should draft one late in the draft.

  80. avatar WOJF says:

    Well, he is back in CA by now;

By Kevin SeifertJust a quick update to let you know where the chase for free agent running back LaDainian Tomlinson now stands.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Tomlinson departed the New York area Saturday morning and is on his way back to San Diego. That jives with the timetable Tomlinson had previously told Minnesota he would follow: visit the Jets and then return home to consider his options and discuss them with his wife.

Based on travel time and other hurdles, a decision might not come until Sunday or Monday. As always, we’ll keep you updated.

  81. avatar Super T says:

Did any of you (Jet fans) that are advocating for the Jets to sign LT actually watch him play last year, or you simply hearing his name, seeing that he scored 12 TDs and losing your abilities intelligently accept the facts (stats)?

Anyone who watched LT play last season will attest that he is a shadow of his former self and isn’t even on par with TJ from last season.

When I keep reading that “LT will be better than TJ because TJ was soft, and avoided hits, and would fall over easy” it clearly tells me that the person writing OBVIOUSLY did not watch LT play last season.

LT was the poster child of “soft” last season and his stats compared to TJs back it up. But never mind stats (YPC, Total rushing yards, 100 yard games, etc) or testimony from people who watched him play last year, he just has to be better than the “soft” TJ right?

  82. avatar andrew says:

    Super T
I have tried to explain this before. LT had a horrible o-line. You want proof Sproles had 3.7 ypc and he didnt even have half the carries LT had. Also LT was used in all the short yard plays. TJ cant create his own running hole I guarantee TJ will carry for less than 3.3 ypc in KC. At least LT is a different runner from Greene and he can catch the ball out of the back field.

  83. avatar WOJF says:

Andrew, and I have tried to explain too but you and the other supporters simply want to believe he is suddenly going to morph into Classic LT. He is done, finito, that is why SD cut him.

While TJ had a good offensive line he usually was running againt nine in the box with the defense daring Sanchez to beat them.

Exactly the opposite in SD, the defense was respecting Rivers and Co and daring SD to beat them on the ground, so LT was often facing nickle and dime packages yet still could not get the job done.

My freind is a huge Charger fan, I was in SD a few weeks ago with all his freinds, all charger fans. They all said LT was the problem, not the solution. this is well before he was even discussed for the Jets.

And I/we saw it with our own eyes in the playoffs. Not to mention he has never played extensively in cold weather.

I trust the opinion of season ticket holders and the Charger front office. Hopefully he is jetting off to play with another future hall of famer in MIN.

  84. avatar Shamik says:

Apparently the NFL shop online is selling Tomlinson Vikings jerseys. Interesting.

  85. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

you sure it wasn’t his college TCU purple jersey?

  86. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

    WOJF,

I live in SD and ofcourse Charger fans will say that. They lost and need someone to blame. They are blaming the running game, when the O line was terrible. LT will not be classic LT correct on that. He can thought still rush 1000 yards with a good line, and he can still handle 12 carries a game teh Jets would give him. He can score on the goalline (12 TD’s) last year. He would be a great signing for that and his leadership.

  87. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

Also…the Charger front office is terrble. Again I live in SD and they never go for free agency (only draft), and they blew out Marty at 14-2 for Norv Turner…Norv has not brought anyone of any talent on to the roster and simply wasted talented years just like Herm did with Bill Parcells drafted talent.

  88. avatar Super T says:

    Andrew,

LT was my #1 fantasy back in my $ last season. I watched every one of his games. Trying to blame his poor performance on his OL when he was the lead back on a team that won 13 games and 4 of those games were against the likes of the Raiders and Chiefs is a pretty weak argument. I’m not saying that the Chargers OL is as good as the Jets OL, but if the Chargers OL was *THAT* bad would they have won 13 games?

And BTW, LT didn’t have a single game over 100 yards rushing all season.

  89. avatar CA JETS FAN says:

    Super T,

yes they would have won 13 because IMO Rivers is that good.

  90. avatar Ben Nevis says:

Some news regarding former Jet TE Chris Baker:

    _____________________________

    Adam Schefter:

“TE Chris Baker will sign a two-year, $4.75 million deal that includes $2.75 million in year one with the Seahawks.”

  91. avatar PickNY says:

Fellas stop comparing stats when measuring RB’s in a offense that is committed to the pass. The object is to win the game and stat’s are irrelevant!

  92. avatar JetSetRadio says:

I think LT can flourish in our system… theres not enough depth for rb’s in the draft..thats why there going after him… he is two years younger then TJ and faster then TJ thus can exploit better the holes the JETS O-Line will make for him.

Whats up with everyone calling TJ a power back.. i love TJ but he was never running anyone over he relied heavily on his cut back vision and exploiting the holes the o-line created and i believe LT can do the same.

But who cares we have Shonn “War Machine” Greene who i believe can easily run for over 1,000 yards and over 10 td’s if he’s healthy and that concern is the only reason were targeting people like LT.

  93. avatar bubbybrister/shovelpass says:

This just in…After signing his contract with Seattle, Chris Baker announced that he will sit out all of training camp because he wants to be paid like a top five TE…

    LOL

  94. avatar Green Lantern says:

TJ wasn’t a power back for us he never ran over anyone. Watch Shonn Greene, look at Brandon Jacobs, and Stephen Jackson. THEY are Power backs LT is quicker and faster than TJ with the same amount of vision. LT is going to kill it up here.

  95. avatar lol man I hate the Jets says:

All of you people that are shocked and pissed off that they would offer LT a contract and wouldn’t offer the same to Thomas Jones, make me laugh. Obviously there are other issues for the GM to make that decision. I’m a Favre fan so I followed your team for 1 year closely. All the crap about how Favre was a bad locker room guy, that’s all a bunch of BS. It’s Thomas Jones that destroyed the locker room, and he didn’t do much better this year. Everyone got sick of Jones. Jones aint nothing but a selfish dbag of a RB. The only reason for his success is because of your great O-line. And now after he signed with the Chiefs, I think we can all agree that Jones’s best days are now behind him.

  96. avatar Marvel says:

    Green Lantern

That’s all there is to it . TJ overvalued by the fans who are scared to move on ..

  97. avatar RonJersey says:

Let’s face it. LT gives Sanchez another option out of the backfield. Can we stop with the TJ talk? Let look forward. Need pass rush and WR. We can’t blitz all the time and then get picked apart like Manning did to us in the AFC Champ game, before Peyton threw the SB game.

  98. avatar Zenlaw says:

Our Ben Nevis was quoted in the New York Times…

    http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/03/13/why-tomlinson-and-not-thomas-jones/

Sorry, if this is old news. I did my best to search and make sure this article hasn’t been mentioned.

  99. avatar Green Lantern says:

zenlaw – i have seen and read so many better arguments than that unfair comparison ben repeatedly shoved down our throats.

  100. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Green Lantern-

    Thanks for being so civil.

The arguments have already been made over and over and over again—your arguments as well as everyone else’s—so I think it’s a bit pointless, as well as a bit tedious, to extend this discussion any further.

At least for me it is.

And so I bid you a good night, sir.

  101. avatar Green Lantern says:

    Marvel-
I think this is what The Jets saw quicker RB’s can use the line to its full extent.

  102. avatar Green Lantern says:

I was simply replying to someone else’s post and stating my opinion. Difference is imma shut up and not continue to post it.

  103. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Green Lantern-

Just in case you didn’t get it, that was exactly my point.

    Good night.

  104. avatar Green Lantern says:

    Ben-
What? That wasn’t your point, you said why am I still talking about it and I said Im simply replying to someone else..
If you are trying to say thats your point you are lying, I saw plenty of times you just posting the comparisons for no reason.

  105. avatar Bent says:

Zen – thanks, yeah, we mentioned it in the daily links.

I think we’ve exhausted that argument (both sides).

There are clearly variables which nobody can predict (or behind the scenes stuff we will never know about re: contract negotiations, attitudes etc), so it’s an argument which can only be settled by the passage of time. The amount of debate it has generated just goes to show it can’t have been easy to make the decision.

  106. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Green Lantern-

Thanks once again for keeping the discussion so civil.

    But I’ve had enough, really.

    It’s tiring, it’s tedious—not you, Green Lantern—the subject itself.

So I’ll say good night yet again.

  107. avatar AKA....Drew says:

The NY Times quoting of Ben Nevis all but confirms that Ben Nevis is Thomas Jones….lol

  108. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Drew-

    LOL!

  109. avatar Super T says:

Ben’s points on the possible LT signing are very rationale. Paying millions of dollars for a washed up LT would be ludicrious!

  110. avatar Daniel says:

Hilarious how during the playoffs and at points during the season, everyone was killing Jones and saying he was done. We let him go, and suddenly we made our team much worse.

Early in the season, he stumbled for a yard or two and finally had a long run or two to pad his stats. In the playoffs, Greene was clearly the better RB.

I appreciate everything Jones did, but if you’re going to say he’s washed up and moan about him in the playoffs (Especially the Colts game), then don’t make it out to be a huge loss.

Be consistent. Stick by that you said. I was one of those who thought he was running out of gas late last season, and I have always thought he wasn’t that big of a loss. A lot of people on here seemed to think he was a waste down the stretch last season, but the waste that was Thomas Jones is suddenly made out to be a future Hall of Famer that we’ll be kicking ourselves for letting go. PLEASE. His success is a product of our beasts up front.

  111. avatar alex morizio says:

    GREEN LANTERN….AND EVERYONE ELSE

I like your enthusiasm, but it seems you are having some communication issues with people on this site, including me a few days ago.
just chill out, everyone here is a jet fan, have fun, and remember, we all love each other on this site!!! people have different opinions and that is ok too. you have to understand that.

as for me, i’m not overly enthusiastic about getting LT. i have to admit, i am more intrigued at the prospect of getting LT, and then getting a second round pick for leon. i love leon, but you build teams with your head, not your heart. to have 3 picks in the top 61 would be amazing for MR. T. gholston aside, he is an assassin in the draft. leon, i hate to say, is replaceable. we need another OLB/pass rusher, DL, and CB, not to mention a slot receiver and safety. go get me the draft picks.
in the infamous words of dakar……JUST MY THOUGHTS.

  112. avatar sackexchange says:

with allof these threads noone is talking about how come noone want to pay a 3rd rounder for clemens……do we cut him if noone wants him..?

  113. avatar Green Lantern says:

How am I having communication issues. Because I am getting tired of a person spitting out “useless” stats like they tell the whole story? OK ill admit maybe I was out of line but I was tired of seeing the same comment over and over again.
But I agree with you Id let Leon walk for another 2nd rounder the Jet fan In me loves Leon but the smart guy in me wants more picks for more players.

  114. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    On a lighter note
    Bassett

“because if LaDainian made a promise to his wife they’d talk about it together and then didn’t? OOOOO-ee!!! I know how that goes in my house. I can’t imagine it’s much different anywhere else.”

    Dude…Mega-ton FUBAR World War 9

  115. avatar lafflin says:

I hope that players don’t read this garbage. And I sure hope that were not dumb enough to let Leon go. He’s. Played his ass of for this tram. He deserved a contract before he got hurt, and I know that he will again once the season starts if were lucky enough to still have him. It takes a lot of heart to get up to full speed as quickly as he does, and that’s what makes him so good. You can draft talent, but its always a gamble cause you can’t heart. Gholston? Or a rb example Bush? If. You ask me were all set in the backfield, we shouldn’t get cute. Besides, I really think it sends a bad message to our players if we don’t do Leon right. I understand its a business, but that doesn’t mean we can’t show any loyalty at all to. Our key players. As far as I’m concerned the only problem with Leon is. That we never gave him enough touches.

  116. avatar lafflin says:

My bad on the grammar guys, I’m typing from my phone. A few missing words as well to make me look illiterate.
