Stirring the Pot: Would Kevin Curtis be a Fit?

By Bassett on 13. Mar, 2010

Everyone’s been talking about adding a slot receiver to this unit. While I believe that Dustin Keller is basically a slot receiver plus a lot more, I understand that the team needs formations that use an actual receiver there rather than a Tight End.

So while there’s been talk about Laveranues Coles joining the team, how about the Eagles’ Kevin Curtis?

According to Scout.com’s Adam Caplan on Twitter — which it’s clearly noted is just his opinion NOT NEWS — the Eagles might be parting ways with the receiver now that they’ve re-signed Hank Baskett to a one year deal.

Curtis (6″0″ 186 lbs.) is a complementary piece and not much more, especially since he’s struggled to stay on the field due to injury.  The receiver is due $5.4 MM in 2010 for the Eagles, including a $1 MM roster bonus, so would the team be looking to cut ties?  The Jets Assistant GM Scott Cohen came from the Eagles, and was part of the Eagles when Curtis was there, so would be familiar with his abilities.

Curtis is a disciplined route-runner and knows how to set up defenders to create separation with his quickness and strength.  Curtis has the ability to make tough catches in traffic, but isn’t physical enough to break tackles or perimeter block … in other words, he’s a slot receiver through and through.

I think that he might be a good stopgap for the slot receiver that seems to be a consensus as a need for the team.

Definately, and judging from his contract numbers there’s probably a good chance he gets cut. I’d take him in a heartbeat over Coles.

I like Curtis, but he cannot stay healthy and slot WRs take a ton of big hits. Heck, Welker has a torn rotator cuff to go along with his knee. Wayne ended his career with post-concussion syndrome. As much as I like Curtis, he’d never survive the pounding. Pass. Plus, I’d rather see Jericho in the slot and Clowney as the no. 2 WR in 3 WR sets.

The guy we must have as our slot receiver next year is “Golden Tate” this kid will be the game breaking receiver we need & will create numerous matchup problems in the slot–Ala Desean Jackson & Percy Harvin…

Not only will he open things up for Edwards but on special teams he is a beast & with Leon Washington shaky right now, Tate will shore up to needs (Special Teams & Slot Receiver)

I thought Golden Tate was a guy to split out and get deep, not a guy to sit 7 yards downfield in the seam and get some YAC. Jackson doesn’t play the slot, either, right? He’s another guy that goes on deeper routes. I haven’t seen Harvin enough to see if he plays the slot. If the Jets got Tate, Jericho or someone else would likely play the slot.

Clowney is not a pro receiver – Should be gone in August (Cut)

Next year our receiving corps should look like this…

    1)Edwards
    2)Cotchery
    3)*Golden Tate* (1st round pick)
    4)Smith
5)Britt or Allision (He looked explosive before knee injury in camp)

    TE)Keller

Imagine going to a 3 wide set & flexing out Keller >>>Matchup problems all day for the defense & then imgine LT coming out the backfield catching the ball..WOW!

The Jets can actually have 5 guys that are pass catching threats all on the field at once. Last year we very rarely had 3 threats-Thomas Jones & Greene are horrible pass catchers out the backfield & Clowney was invisible the last 8 weeks.

He may not be the greatest WR, but if it was between him and Coles? I agree with most…I would take Curtis.

Tate can most definitely play the slot , just like Harvin did last yea. The only reason he was going deep on ND all the time was because they had no other big play WR threats & you don’t use your most talented WR in college in the slot.

On the Jets & in the NFL it is a whole different scenario & his first year or two he most def can play the slot…and be very-very effective.

I would prefer Jordan shipley in the 4th round over golden Tate

I agree with jetsdt715 if anyone has watched Shipley play he is the next Wes Welker…Shipley has great hands, speed, good character, and is a definite playmaker…Would love to see Shipley on the Jets roster this season…If not I would definitely take Curtis over the mouthy and disgruntly COLES….No retreads THANK YOU VERY MUCH….

Golden tate has the ability to play slot and/or be a number 2 reciever

NO way. He had ONE 300 yard 3 TD game or something like that a few years back. That is all he has ever done but people don’t realize that that is why they think he’s a good receiver.

If you are worried about Laverneus Coles’ injuries, then this guy has to be neck and neck with him there at that department. This might have been a good move a few years ago

This guy would be AWESOME as a slot on our team. Quick, explosive, and great YAC

can’t believe he was making that much. be a good fit though.

    14. Mar, 2010 at 12:10 am #

Curtis is only 2 years removed from his best season as a pro. Barring injuries the guy would still be catching 70 passes a year from McNabb.

If the price is right, go get him. Anyone is an upgrade over Smith and Clowney as far as the slot is concerned. Clowney is a nice 4th option, nothing more. If Smith is a WR, he would have been one by now.

I like Curtis for this team. He will be a nice fit.

You sign Curtis if he is cut, but that should not stop us from taking Shipley if he is on the board in the 3rd.

He would be one of the top two route runners on the team (Cotchery involved).
