Coin Toss to Determine Who Opens New Stadium

by Bassett on March 14th, 2010 at 12:18 am

So who gets to open the new stadium? According to reports, it”s going to come down to a coin toss.

“The Jets have presented a plan for the flip at the new stadium in the week ahead to make this decision easy,” the team’s Web site says. “The details of the 50-50 proposition have yet to be fully worked out with the league, but the Jets are willing to let the verdict be determined the same way that the league’s teams have settled some scores for decades.”

The report points out the NFL has used a coin toss as an arbiter for years, ranging from the opening kickoff of games and overtime, to draft positions, to playoff tiebreakers (though it never has reached that 12th criterion).

“It’s quite possible … fans may be invited into the stadium to observe the proceedings and cheer on their side, meaning their team as well as their team’s side of the medallion,” the report says.

If you go to the stadium to cheer on a coin toss, you my friend, are a much better fan than I am.

just out of curiosity- who picks the toss? the away team always calls the flip, but who would in this case? do they flip to see who picks? and if so, how then would that pick be decided? etc. just curious

Speaking of Rex, Cimini is reporting on his twitter that Rex was in the hospital for a “scheduled procedure” whatever that means. It’s not believed to be serious though

Can’t wait to watch this matchup! haha how could flipping a coin warrant a get together by both fans at the stadium.

This really is just a test to see if they can host dumb things to get fans to come buy expensive beer all year long!!

  13. avatar Max V.V. says:

I would be there in a heartbeat if I still lived in the NYC area. Wish they would carry this live on the NFL Network or something.

  14. avatar bleedgreen&white says:

I would go too hey its a chance to see the stadium, of course i would be trashed before i got there.

Go Jets let get this toss won and open the stadium!!!

  15. avatar jcc says:

I would imagine that they would make a special coin that has the Jets’ emblem on one side and the Giants’ emblem on the other side. Nobody would call the toss, but rather it would just go to whomever’s emblem isn’t touching the turf.

  16. avatar Scouse Jet says:

What not make the first pre-season game a Jets -Giants affair, and then both teams have opened the stadium.

  17. avatar kc says:

    good idea Scouse.

  18. avatar kc says:

    but who’s the HOME team??

  19. avatar Le' Sean Roberts says:

We’ere not scared of anybody, so whatever….well our team must want to be the first to take in that new locker room scent or something……I would really like to see which team has the biggest fan turn out throughout the season. Don’t want to look bad in that area.

  20. avatar Chris says:

I’m all for the coin toss. nobody calls it. Namath on one side, some famous giant on the other.

  21. avatar NamVetJet says:

    Tailgate!

  22. avatar J-Kay says:

If we’re calling it and we don’t pick tails, thats gonna be ridiculous

  23. avatar Harris52 Fan says:

Damn I wish this was the year we played the NFC East but unfortunately it’s every 4 years. I believe we play them next season. What a scene it would have been if we played the Giants on Sunday Night Fottball opening the new stadium. That would have been real cool. Oh well, NOT gonna happen

  24. avatar Shamik says:

Don’t we play the Giants in the preseason every year? Why not make it that winner of that game gets the opener?

  25. avatar AA Brooklyn says:

Not that its going to decide anything but the NFL has scheduled the Giants to open at home for at least the past 2 seasons. For a while I wanted the Jets to open the new stadium and it will be great if it does happen but I really don’t care anymore. What I do care about – no one will say Giants Stadium anymore or at least the shouldn’t unless it’s some a-hole like Francesa that enjoys needling Jets fan every opportunity he can. Bottom line its the Jets Stadium for real now.

  26. avatar Bent says:

PFT reports that an NFL spokesman has said that the league will decide, not a coin toss and some speculate that the Jets (who are sticking to their story) are pushing the coin toss idea as they see this as their only shot at hosting the opener.
