From the PLEASE GOD NO Department: Jets Talking About Marshall

by Bassett on March 14th, 2010 at 11:59 am

I think I’d rather gouge my eye with a grapefruit spoon rather than talk about trading for Brandon Marshall, but Mike Lombardi at NFP won’t let me. This morning, Lombo is reporting that he’s hearing rumors that the Jets are still interested in Denver WR Brandon Marshall.

I keep hearing from my Jets sources that they’re having internal discussions regarding Brandon Marshall and would love to put together a package of players that might entice the Broncos and still keep their first-round pick.

GAHHHHHHHHHH!

This dude was the INTENDED TARGET in the Darrent Williams murder.

Let that sink in. So this guy is alive and a decent human being is dead, because — well — Brandon Marshall acted like a bitch on New Year’s Eve, even inciting gang members to bring their guns. Guns which were used to murder his teammate. Nice.

Last year, the Broncos wanted David Harris from the Jets to make this move. If David Harris is part of a trade for a punk like Marshall, I’m going to riot.

I hate this idea for a variety of reasons, and I’ll detail them later, but here’s what I will say for now. Jerricho Cotchery is a damn good receiver, and I’d imagine that he’d be moved in the trade if they do this deal. That’s a HUGE mistake.

Second, Mike Tannenbaum likes to talk in flowery prose about “looking at the whole person” and pat his own organization on the back for moves like Laveranues Coles and others like Kris Jenkins. It’s clear that this organization now thinks it’s Boys Town and can redeem lost souls.

This move is nothing like those moves. The “whole person” is a douchebag, in this case Mike. Marshall is “manly” enough to (allegedly) beat women he’s been in relationships with, ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. Marshall has also been cited for shooting a handgun at his own father. He’s a real class act. How would the team not bring in Matt Jones over substance issues last year but be willing to take a chance with this guy? It makes absolutely no sense to me.

Marshall is an incredible talent, to be sure, but it’s also carried onto the field. There was that video of him dogging it in practice, and then there was the benching he received in a game with playoff consequences. His actions, alleged or otherwise have proven, he’s trash. Strong words? Am I worried about libel? No, because the truth is an absolute defense.

I completely agree, if they want a receiver so bad, DRAFT ONE!

  2. avatar droseatwork says:

I think the angry Bassett is the best Basset!

  3. avatar ronnie says:

Why not trade our ammo for something we need like a pass rusher instead of a problematic #1 WR when we only need a slot receiver.

  4. avatar Shamik says:

As good as it is to have two top flight receivers, it can also be a curse if they both start whining about not getting the ball enough. There’s plenty of talent on offense on the team as it is, and it all goes through Sanchez anyway. Pass on Marshall.

  5. avatar Bent says:

    Needs more hashtag campaign.

Can’t see the Jets trading Cotch. The central figure in the Jets bid would have to be Braylon surely.

    No thanks, anyway.

  6. avatar Neville says:

Couldn’t agree more Brian. WHY do we need to trade valuable picks in a stacked draft for this beautiful addition to society. Between the talent we have in Braylon, (the hands of) Jerricho, the mismatch with Keller; NEVERMIND the fact our line is built to run the ball, I’ll riot with you.
The development of the passing game does not reside in acquiring more talent. It lies in the development of Sanchez!!

    This has ruined my Sunday.

  7. avatar Dylan says:

As always, it depends what the Jets would have to give up. No way would I give up a top defensive player though. Here are my list of untradeable guys:

    Revis
    Cro
    Leonhard
    Jenkins
    Harris
    Scott
    Pace
    Sanchez
    Greene
    Edwards
    Keller
    Mangold
    Brick

  8. avatar Dylan says:

    and Cotch

  9. I don’t think there is much truth to this rumor. Braylon and Cotch are already here, my guess is that they won’t add another vet. Anyways, Rex was having surgery so he couldnt have been talking to his comrades

  10. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Bassett-

I agree with Bent: the Broncos would probably want Braylon in any package for Marshall.

But I also agree with you (as does Bent) that we don’t need Marshall, and shouldn’t give up a player or a pick or even Rex’s new lap-band for him.

  11. avatar Ed L says:

i dont think its going to happen….and i hope it doesnt happen either….

but i agree with bent…braylon will probably be moved in the deal

  12. avatar cold_old_steelers_fan says:

Marshall would be a step backwards for this team. He has talent but his presence be horrific for team morale. The loss of TJ over his bonus is already a dissatisfier the coaching staff will have to deal with (I think they will be able to as long as the team keeps winning which they will).

Draft a receiver if you need another though I don’t know it is the Jets top need. You only need 2 or 3 players to complete your team (as in take it to the last level) and Marshall isn’t one of them.

  13. avatar Bassett says:

    I disagree.

Why would McDaniels want Edwards? He’s not a Belichick guy … but Cotchery … there’s a guy that fits the bill.

  14. avatar Randy says:

I wouldnt mind bringing Marshall in, but not if it means giving up talent which would include Cotchery or Harris. That would actually make us worse. If your talking about trading a 2011 1st round pick straight up for Marshall than I would be all for it.That would mean you would have one of the best WR Corp in the league with Edwards,Marshall and Cotchery in the slot.We are built to win now and we should keep this years 1st round pick to draft a Safety.next year we can worry about extending contracts to our core players and to be honest we might not need next years 1st round pick as much, as long as we lock up our own guys.

Listen if we can get Marshall for next years first straight up…I say go for it because most likely If we have another good season, it will be a late 1st round pick anyway for a Pro Bowl Wide Receiever.

If it means giving up Cotchery and others, I say

    HELL NO!!!

Cotchery is too much of a leader on this team to be traded away for a Wide Receiever who is ALL ABOUT HIM!!!!

What would that say about the Franchise we become if we trade all our True Faces for Troubled players…You see we are already dumping Thomas Jones for Tomlinson(which Im all for actually)…

Its ok if you do it to improve and make a Few swaps like a TJ for LT move…..But when your reshaping your whole Core guys for troubled players than im not for that at all.

I Think we need very few changes…we dont need to reshape the entire team…

Draft a Safety,Bring in LT and Leon Washington,Sign a guy like Coles or Curtis to play slot…and draft remaining fill in talent in the draft.

Adding Marhsall is a bonus…only if your not giving up Better talent to get him…TO MUCH OF A RISK

FInal THOUGHT——Bring in Marhshall….ONLY if it means next years 1st round pick ONLY…and not for Harris or Cotchery

  15. avatar Dylan says:

I wouldn’t get moving Braylon for Marshall. Marshall is going to cost WAY more to resign, and Braylon has just as much potential.

  16. avatar joethejet says:

we dont need him,we need a puss rusher, either a linebacker or a defensive end,we also need another safety, and a slot receiver, along with some depth along the offensive line and also another running abck in the mix, marshall can go somewhere else or stay in denver,im not giving up a first rounder for him,and if they trade david harris,i will no longer root for the jets

  17. avatar Zack A. says:

Seriously, if they trade Cotchery for this moron, I’m gonna freakin lose it…

  18. avatar Ed L says:

what it comes down to is…i dont want marshall unless tanny rips them off

  19. avatar Randy says:

Personallly I rather have Braylon Edwards than Brandon Marshall…..Sure Edwards drops the ball on big plays….But im confident that if he gets a feel for New York and gets a good Chemistry with mark Sanchez, that Edwards has a ton of potential than Brandon Marshall.Plus Edwards doesnnt seem to be a trouble maker witch the exception of punching Lebrons friend lol. That can happen to anybody depending on the situation. Its not like Edwards had a gun or anything.

  20. avatar nyj09 says:

Please don’t why even bother we have other needs to focus on this move wouldn’t make any sense! Focus on a pass rusher please!

Also, the whole argument that we have enough leadership in our locker room to deal with troubled players comes apart when you start trading the good guys for the low life, talented player like Marshall. Keep our core, we don’t want this scumbag!

  21. avatar Dylan says:

I will trust and support whatever move Tanny makes. All of his moves seem to work out. I would be shocked if he gave up any important peices in order to get Marshall. The only reasonable explanation for their interest is that they think Marshall is significantly better than Braylon, and with Rhodes gone (and maybe Leon) they could afford to pay him next season.

  22. avatar Organized Chaos says:

Good news and bad news about the actual probability of this happening :
    1. It is believed that Denver won’t setle for less than a first and Seattle has shown interest and a way higher pick than us (which could also hurt). So maybe with Tanny reluctant to part with the first, the deal stalls.
    2. Lombardi ended up being really on point with the Cromartie trade. Even when Jet beatwriters like Cimini were saying it wasn’t true, Lombardi stuck by his source and was right. Maybe NFP has a close source in the front office so I’m not disregarding this that much.
I know it’s a longshot but the thought of containing Marshall and allowing him to just play is dreamy with this team….

  23. avatar nyj09 says:

However, I would be pro a sign and trade with marshall though, meaning sign him give denver our 29th pick and then ship marshall to seattle for the 14th pick. I saw this idea on profootballtalk.com and thought it was a great idea for us, puts us in position to draft a pass rusher make a play for berry if he falls a little or trade back for earl thomas or draft a pass rusher. But by no means do I want Marshall on our opening day roster. whatcha guys think?

  24. avatar clint says:

I also read Dez Bryants draft stock is dropping a lot do you think its possible we could trade up if he was still on the board around 15-20?

  25. avatar Bent says:

Of course, Bassett, but we’re the team putting the package together, not them. I just think the Jets would be willing to give up Braylon of they could upgrade the position, but doubt they’d surrender Cotchery who they should view as part of the foundation.

  26. avatar richardtodd says:

Stay away!!! We might as well get T. Owens, wold cost us less!

  27. avatar Randy says:

Number 1 priority right now needs to be Signing
LT and Leon Washington to lock up our Running attack. This also helps our 3rd receiever because we can use Leon in 2 back formations and have him as an extra receiever(which is more options for Mark Sanchez).Greene gets the majority of carries and LT would certainly get his share.

We need to draft a safety like Taylor Mays in the first round, or even explore the option of bringing in Darren Sharper.Pool is a good talent, but I wouldn’t count him as being a replacement over Kerry Rhodes.

we may have a good pass rusher if we experiment Vernon Gholston at DE in only his 3rd season. He is a natural Defensive End.

DT is going to be the priortiy next year.We need a good replacement for when Jenkins is gone

Outside Linebacker we can address in the 2nd round maybe.Or possibly we can always explore trade options next season.

  28. avatar Dylan says:

    nyj09,

Obviously that itsn’t possible or every team that picks below 14 would make that deal. I wouldn’t exactly trust anything that Florio writes.

  29. avatar Green Lantern says:

Id rather trade up for Dez Bryant than Trade for Brandon Marshall.

  30. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Bent-

Not so sure Mike T sees JCo the same way you and I do. So if Bassett is right, and Denver wants Cotchery for Marshall, the FO may be seduced by the idea of Braylon and Brandon at WR for us.

But I think it would be horrific to give up such a reliable receiver—and such a player of great character—as Cotch.

  31. avatar Bent says:

OC – Lombardi has been very wrong about the Jets in the past too.

That PFT idea won’t work because BM would have to sign a waiver after the Jets signed him if the wanted to be traded and why would he do that when he could stay under contract with a contender by refusing to sign the waiver. He can’t be that keen to go to Seattle. It doesn’t surprise me that Florio was unaware of this aspect.

  32. avatar Randy says:

    nyj09

I would love that idea but why would the Broncos want the 29th pick when they could have the 14th pick from seattle straight up?

We would be swapping a 29th pick for 14th for absolutely nothing

  33. avatar Green Lantern says:

I mean dont get me wrong Marshall is a Top Receiver. I just dont wanna give up a lot of players for him.

  34. avatar Brad R. says:

It’s hard to argue that Marshall isn’t both a giant douche and a dominant player. I think I might be interested if he came cheap, but i agree that trading a high character guy like cotch, who is also very productive, for a prat like Marshall would do more harm than good from a leadership and chemisty perspective. Ultimately Basset is right, Marshall isn’t worth the baggage or the ridiculous contract required to sign him.

  35. avatar nyj09 says:

    Dylan-

Good point but why not look into it? Seattle would clearly rather trade the 14 than the 6 and if its true they really want marshall and denver wont part with him for anything less than the 6, which they are entitled to under the rights of RFA compensation, then it makes sense for a team to look into that especially a team like us that is looking for that one impact player to solidify our contendership. Just something to look into.

  36. avatar Bent says:

The idea behind it is that Seattle also has the 6th pick and this way they don’t have to give that pick up (you have to suurender your own pick if you sign an RFA).

I’m not sure the NFL would allow it even if BM was willing to sign a waiver.

  37. avatar Randy says:

First off if they want Braylon Edwards for Brandon Marshall I Say NO!!!!

Marhall will complain about Sanchez not thowing the ball enough times while Braylon Edwards has done nothing but play football and not make excuses.I respect Braylon Edwards ability to be quiet and respectable while playing the game because he doesn’t complain about how many times he is thrown the ball.Marshall is the same guy who didn’t want to show up in Denver during training camp because of his contract.

  38. avatar Dylan says:

    nyj09,

Tanny is a trade genius. I’m pretty sure he would have done it by now if it was possible.

  39. avatar Marvel says:

    Bent

Does the FO ask Sanchize who’d he prefer to throw to. Or is he too young for the FO to care what he thinks .. Now the only BIG name defensive players I would give up are GHOST & B.THOMAS. If they want Braylon , no draft picks & said players I wouldn’t have a problem with a trade under those circumstances.

    Randy

Braylon made excuses for dropping easy catches .. He’s no saint ..

  40. avatar joe c from new haven, CT says:

GET HIM NOW! GIVE UP THE LOW FIRST FOR MARSHALL AND LET THE NEW YORK PRESS DO THE REST. GET LT FOR THE MORALE AND MARSHALL FOR THE TDS. YOU ARE NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE DORTHY. THIS IS THE BIG CITY.

  41. avatar AJ says:

WTFFF are the Jets doing? Marshall is all about himself. Causes way too many problems. Stay away from him, can’t we go after sharper or something where it doesn’t cost picks or our players…

  42. avatar Organized Chaos says:

Good point Bent as I know that Lombardi has had it fair share of whiffs in regards to NYJ but I just am considering that he recently got the Cromartie trade correct. Nobody knows for sure, but I think that his points may be more validated now than on previous occasions.
As for Marshall the player it is hard to argue against his talent. Don’t give up too much for it and trading for Dez Bryant would be a bad move. DB already they say has character issues and it isn’t even known just how good he will be in the NFL. If your gonna go with a problem WR take the proven once at least…..

  43. avatar asdf says:

Amen Bassett!!! Couldn’t agree with you more!

  44. avatar NamVetJet says:

    Just say no.

  45. avatar Matt says:

Agreed, I mean you don’t even have to say more than Cotchery wouldn’t be the second receiver anymore to position me against this move.

  46. avatar levi says:

What kinda tool punts balls away from the ballboys anyway. This guy is a chemistry killer with great talent. No thanks.

  47. avatar Jason says:

I hate the idea of getting Marshall because he is just going to be a mess in NY. Talented guy, but insane. Id have to think Cotch would be involved in such a deal. I dont think Leon would be involved since they already have two runners. Im not sure who else would be of interest. I cant see us parting ways with Pouha. Maybe a guy like Matt Slauson could be in a package. Id hate to hear David Harris’ name come up but I think he was rumored last year in a similar deal.

  48. avatar rich says:

nyj09, that Seattle idea isn’t possible. If they sign Marshall to a sheet Denver doesn’t match and lose their first round pick Braylon by rule becomes a free man which I doubt they would do. No clue why they want to do this in this kind of draft, but Marshall, Braylon and Cotchery would be insane

  49. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Dont want Marshall- his ability is top notch but he has turned into a first class a-hole…

I can see it now- Week 17 vs the Pats for the division and Marshall doesnt want to play because of a butt strain…

Guy would put up sick numbers but I dont think we could count on him if it was all on the line…Braylon, drops and all, always plays hard whether he gets the ball or not and JCo, well I dont even have to say anything, we all know what JCo is about…

  50. avatar rich says:

They would never trade Harris and probably not any other important player just picks. Trade for Dumervil.

  51. avatar rich says:

and if they did get Marshall for just picks, how would they plan on extending everyone.

  52. avatar Harvlis says:

Marshall is like a young Randy Moss. He is a great receiver. That being said, we got into the Championship game on defense and a running game. We have Braylon, Cotchery, Keller, and either Leon or LT to throw the ball to. I would try to pick up a disgruntled Richard Seymour, before I would go after Marshall. If they could add Seymour to our D line, other teams would have to face Ellis, Jenkins, and Seymour. I like how that sounds. Just let’s hope that the dysfunctional Marshall ends up in a different division.

  53. avatar mike s. says:

    With due respect to Basset:

Let’s be clear… we don’t know who this guy is as a man. We only know the image that has been created by the idiots in the media. The front office will do the character checks the right way, and I am certain they will not be calling the idiots in the NYC media.

What we do know about this kid is what we see on the field.
We know the league can’t cover this kid. He has caught over 100 passes each of the past 3 seasons!
Doing that with Mike Shanahan and Jay Cutler, is one thing. But this kid put up 1,100 yards and 101 catches in only 15 games in 2009. Remember this was the season where there were tensions with the new head coach and the QB is friggin, Kyle Orton.

This kid is 6’4″ 230 lbs and is a proven playmaker in this league at the age of 25! He is a big, physical, possession receiver with good length, excellent body control, great hands, and the ability to go get the football. These type of guys are very rare in the NFL.
Is he as good as Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson, or Calvin Johnson? Maybe not. But he is a special talent and if you have a chance to get him, you pull the trigger!

ILBs, even ones as good as Harris, do not change the game in the same way as WRs that can beat double coverage.
I like LB David Harris a lot. He has clearly emerged as a top tier of ILB and belongs in the same group as Willis, Beason, Tatupu, and Ryans. But the league is filled with top defenses that have very average talents at ILB. These guys do not change the game.
When you are given the chance to get a game changer you must consider it. Even if that means trading a solid character and great ILB, like Harris.

And, by the way, the only a-hole that pulled a gun and fired at anyone that night was the guy that shot into the limo. That guy was NOT Marshall.

Hey Tanny… make it happen. Get it done!

  54. avatar jkjet64 says:

If they trade for Marshall I will be physically ill. i wouldn’t give up anyone on the team except maybe the Ball Boy for Marshall. scratch that, I wouldn’t even give him up either

  55. avatar Jason says:

Marvel, At this stage of the game I dont think Sanchez has much input on who the Jets get for him to throw to. I also dont think they expect him to throw a teammate under the bus (i.e. saying I have a tough time getting on the same page as Braylon) when he is this young and trying to earn their trust. I think what the team does is evaluate tape and see what Sanchez does and does not do well.

Marshall is intriguing to them, Id imagine, because he is big and can go up and grab passes that might sail, which is something Sanchez has problems with. Its a different skillset than Edwards. Edwards is big, but his big asset is his ability to break coverage deep (though catching is an issue) and Sanchez throws the ball very well deep to Braylon. Problem is when Braylon goes over the middle he cant catch with his hands consistently. Hes more of a body receiver. Watch him and hell often do the jump to get the ball in his gut so he can secure it properly. Marshall is going to simply grab the ball and keep going in that spot. J-Co doesnt have the same size as Marshall which makes him a little more prone to having passes picked off that are intended for him. He is similar to Marshall in that his game is made on YAC potential, but Marshall makes a few more explosive plays while J-Co is more consistent.

It would be intriguing to see all three on the same team. Edwards would benefit greatly. J-Co would probably suffer, but might get very favorable matchups. The more I think about it the guy maybe the Jets would be looking to trade is Dustin Keller. McDaniels comes from a TE friendly system and Scheffler completely fell out of favor there. Keller would fit in nicely in the system. Keller has been a bit of a disappointment here, though he did explode in that playoff game.

  56. avatar rich says:

no never trade david harris ever are you nuts

  57. avatar Marvel says:

    Jason

Good points on Sanchize … As far as Keller goes I can’t see them trading him. Too young too good . I’d rather keep the offense as is (plus a RB) but I wouldn’t hate a Marshall trade however unnecessary it may be..

  58. avatar Super T says:

After Marshall’s benching it is pretty clear that he won’t be a member of the 2010 Broncos and if the Jets can land him for less than a 1st round pick (remember Boldin was traded for a 3rd and 5th round pick) I would be in favor of it. Much more so than for a certain HOF RB who is currently a shadow of his former self.

  59. avatar Brad says:

I wonder if they sign LT, maybe they then try to package Leon with Braylon or Cotchery for Edwards. I am undecided on making a move for Marshall- the guy is one of the most talented WR’s in the league- he dominated Indy last year-21 receptions in one game, and he dominated NE too last year. He has been know to drop the ball just like Edwards. Both have had off field issues- last year many people were very nervous about getting Edwards when we made the trade and he has been a good citizen since. So I’m undecided on this possible move- depends what we would give up!

  60. avatar HOZ THE JET says:

we can just sign him and cough up the 29th pick…

  61. avatar toddrsmith77 says:

Brandon marshall is an amzing reciever and would be a huge upgrade atthe position. I’d be much more happy with him over 10:56:19 AM .

  62. avatar StopTheWildcat says:

i’d send them a package of Bryan Thomas, Marcus Henry, Aundrae Allison, and this years 4th….

  63. avatar JetSetRadio says:

Please lets not get rid of Cotch… i love the guy and he can catch a ball in a tornado and their gunna want more then just Cotch… idk i just feel as if he is not a neccesity for us and were not going to be able to afford everyone’s contract we have..

If they get rid of Braylon instead i would be all for it just not Cotch.

  64. avatar realty jet fan says:

Dont we need more time with rex to know if he is a coach who can fix these problem players.

  65. avatar igs, the double agent says:

    Why??? Lmao!

  66. avatar RJF says:

Man, listen if we can trade Cotchery and maybe a second for Brandon Marshall, I’D DO IT W/ MY EYES CLOSED. Cotchery is not even close to being a Top-15 WR. You guys are the worst sometimes. You dont have to game plan for Jerricho…….. When has any d-coord ever said that he had to game plan for Cotch, yeah Braylon to a certain extent, but he’s just too inconsistent. This guy is one of Top 5 players in the league. YES THE LEAGUE.

    1. Peyton, 2. Brady ( healthy), 3. Revis, 4. Marshall, 5. Reed (healthy)

Then there’s everybody else. Maybe this guy just needs a change of scenery. Yeah, he’s a headache, but most of the greats have something wrong w/ them. Trade for him and you have a Top 5 player for the next 5-6 yrs

  67. avatar dirtyfranchez says:

Harsh words from Bassett, but true to an extent nonetheless. Granted we don’t know him personally, but If hes had this many issues come to the media spotlight there has to be at least a degree of true to some of them. No doubt an unbelievable talent though, it’s a shame.

  68. avatar realty jet fan says:

Then he is our headache just what a 2nd year qb needs.

  69. avatar JayM says:

This was tweeted by Adam Shefter

A guality Sunday read RT @PostBroncos: Broncos News: Krieger: Broncos’ Brandon Marshall much deeper than any caricature
    http://dpo.st/9ro3D3

I have no opinion on Marshall but I wouldn’t trade Harris for him

  70. avatar Marvel says:

    RJF

J Coch is the man .. I’ve seen him do some insane stuff over the years .. Respect your opinion , it’s not completly wrong but J Coch is a big time #2 in my book ..

  71. avatar Tos9987 says:

If they only trade recivers for him and a later rounder pick I wouldnt be too mad . He catches everything. him next to braylon would be sick .

Although more realistic would be get rid of braylon for Marshall not sure I love that but Marshall is a bettter player . I just think Braylon is better teamate I really like his attitude since he got here .

I wount cry about a braylon marshall swap but anyone else involved . It s a really bad move . To get marshall I bet they want more then 1 guy .

  72. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Lombardi is usually pretty good on these stories….Didnt he never let the Cromartie story die either?

  73. avatar Dylan says:

    RJF,

Top 5 in the league? Thats ridiculous! Here are some WRs that are better than Marshall.

    Larry Fitzgerald
    Andre Johnson
    Calvin Johnson
    Greg Jennings
    Wes Welker
    Randy Moss
    Sydney Rice
    Reggie Wayne

I think Marshall is a good player, but he isn’t even a top 5 WR. He has a very low average, and is basically just a really good possesion receiver. Is he better than Cotch or Braylon? Yes. But a top 5 player in the league? Give me a break.

  74. avatar Rich says:

Love the intensity. I’d rather see the Jets use their 29th pick on a WR. People are too down on Braylon. Let’s see what he does in a full season in NY. Great post!

  75. avatar AKA....Drew says:

    Dylan

I am not a Marshall fan and I think his baggage almost overshadows his talent but he would #4 on your list of WR’s you just named.

Saying he is not an elite talent at WR is absurd.

  76. avatar EastSide says:

Cotchery’s constant toe drags and underneath receptions during the playoffs kept us in contention. I feel like he singlehandedly forced Marvin Lewis to burn his challenge flags. The man is a master of his craft and a first down machine. He was a mentor for Stuckey and the respect that the players have for him oozes at every interview opportunity.

If he goes, I don’t know how I won’t vomit uncontrollably.

  77. avatar Dylan says:

    AKA….Drew,

Where did I say that he is not an elite talent? i said that he is not a top 5 PLAYER in the league like RJF insisted he was. I do think he is a top 10 receiver, I just don’t think he is a top 5 talent. He gets thrown to an insane amount of times. He is a very good player, dont get me wrong, but the system he plays in pads his stats a lot.

  78. avatar jetsfan101 says:

I would say he is like the 4th best wr. Fitzgerald Andre and Welker are the only guys I would rather have at that position.

  79. avatar Drew says:

Almost certain Cotchery would go in this deal. Braylon and J-Co ain’t a bad starting tandem…what the team needs is a SLOT WR. That’s where the draft comes into play. Brad Smith could have been, so could David Clowney, but neither really showed anything good in the slot last year (and Smith basically was only under center for the end of the year). We need to be able to play with three WR’s out there, and I know I sound arrogant, but without Ben Hartsock, Robert Turner, and Wayne Hunter.

  80. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Maybe I misread your point but you did say guys like Sydney Rice and Greg Jennings were better and they just are not.

Plus Denver’s system has changed since 2 years ago and he has had 3 years with 100+ catches and 1,000 yards… ( not to mention games missed for suspension) without a decent player playing opposite of him like the Moss/Welker, Jennings/Driver, Fitz/Boldin.

  81. avatar mggtz says:

Trade Braylon not Cotch….there is no way you can get rid of Cotch.

  82. avatar Dylan says:

No way is Marshall as good as Sidney Rice! Rice was rated as the #2 receiver on profootballfocus.com. Marshall was rated as the #32 WR! He is a good player, but he is not a top 5 WR. He is a product of Denver’s system. Gaffney had 213 receiving yards when Marshall was out!

  83. avatar Dylan says:

Is Gaffney an elite WR as well?

  84. avatar sexy rexy says:

im sorry but Marshall is 2x better than cotchery. Marshall is a FREAK who can take over games by himself look at what he did against the Giants. Look at what he did when he set the receiving yds record against the Colts. This is a go to guy. Tanny lets get it going.

  85. avatar RJF says:

Dylan, (yeah dude?…….. yeah?) Greg Jennings huh, Calvin Johnson, yep, Sydney Rice ok, Randy Moss sure, all of those are signs of being delusional my friend. Really it is!

Dude, as Drew stated 3yrs w/ 100 catch seasons. Tell me which one of those WR’s that you named has that kind of production. Really dude I live off of stats not affection. In the beginning of the year I was on Andre Johnson hard, real hard! He’s probably the only person worthy. He’s another person that has great speed, superior strength to crush CB’s and has good hands. Brandon Marshall has great hands, good speed, and will dominate blocks. He catches everything, rarely and I mean rarely do you see balls bounce off his hands. Larry Fitz has everything, but its not too many times that I see Larry blow by anyone on a fly route. He out physicals you and out jumps you…. But he is a precise route runner. Everybody else you named are 2nd tier WR’s

  86. avatar Joe B. says:

“How would the team not bring in Matt Jones over substance issues last year but be willing to take a chance with this guy?”

Uh, because he’s nine bajillion times better than Matt Jones?

I don’t want Marshall, but comparing him to Matt freaking Jones is ridiculous. He may be a bad dude but the guy is an absolute monster on the field.

  87. avatar jkjet64 says:

Doesn’t anyone care about character anymore? look wat T.O did to all the teams he was on. he was without question a great receiver and he was a cancer o every team he was on. Come on guys. We took Braylon & Cromartie. Don’t we have enough projects on our team now? He’s been nothing but a distraction to Denver.

  88. avatar GangreenTed says:

RJF your right on the money…tho i dont agree marshall is a top 5 player in the league..i do think without a doubt hes a top 5 WR in the league..we all know his issues but the guy delivers on sunday..hes a matchup nightmare..and hes only 25 yrs old..you guys crack me up..cotchery is a very solid number 2 WR but cmon..r u kidding me?i love cotch too but not enuff not to put in a package for marshall..remeber that marshall issues with the denver organization stems from getting paid peanuts for his production…i do agree harris is a deal breaker..but as long as we can perserve our draft picks this year and fill our needs id trade for marshall in a heartbeat…A HEARTBEAT!!!!

  89. avatar Corey says:

Dylan, You can’t be more wrong on your top 5. You got a one year wonder the just did good because of Farve’s arm in your top 5 (Sidney Rice)? Not to mention the always injured Calvin Johnson, give me a break. BM is a top 5 receiver no doubt and the Jets obviously need another receiver because they didn’t rank in the top 25 in passing/receiving offense last year. I wouldn’t like to part with Cotch but the Jets need better receivers to help them break the top 10 in passing offense. Towards the end of the year teams stopped doubling Edwards on the deep ball cause he drops it 60% of the time. I say we package Edwards and our first round pick for marshall and let that be that…But if the Broncos really want cotch, I wouldn’t mind us sending cotch and our second round pick for BM.

  90. avatar Snakeman says:

If Brandon Marshall is obtained in exchange for a package that includes either Jerricho Cotchery or David Harris, I am going to seriously rethink my allegiance to this team. And I love the Jets. I also think the low-key but incredibly solid Cotchery is my favorite player.

  91. avatar Dylan says:

Do we really want to keep on bringing in guys with issues off of the field? A couple guys is alright, but eventually its going to hurt this teams chemistry. Bringing in problem players hasn’t worked for the Bengals or the Cowboys.

  92. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

We trade David Harris for Marshall and I’m gonna have a stroke

DH is one of our CORE guys. The kid is good enough to build an entire defense around

  93. avatar Dylan says:

    Corey,

Edwards and our 1st round pick? You have got to be kidding. I wouldn’t even trade Edwards and a second for Marshall. Marshall is very good, but he is much worse than his stats. Marshall also is going to cost way more and has a ton off issues off the field. I would take him, but only at a very reduced cost.

Did you see Rice in the playoffs? He was getting double covered and was still torching other teams. He is a much better deep threat than Marshall, which is why I think he is better.

  94. avatar GangreenTed says:

Hey Dylan which players have the jets bought in that have been chemistry killers or distractions?? maybe we have been watchin different teams over the years…our team character is in a different stratoshpere than the bengals!! lol

  95. avatar Dylan says:

    GangreenTed,

There haven’t been any problems yet, but if they keep bringing in guys like Marshall there will be. Did you watch that video of Marshall during practice last year? The guy is a selfish crybaby who beats women. Just the kind of guy we want on our team right?

  96. avatar GangreenTed says:

umm sidney rice?? are we basing one year of production vs.. 3 straight 100 reception years..cmon!! theyre the same age and same size but totally not the same production..what did rice do before favre came in..i know marshall still caught 100 balls with a scrub like orton throwing the ball…just because rice is a downfield threat doesnt make him a better reciever..

  97. avatar jkjet64 says:

Make no mistake about it. marshall will absolutely kill the chemistry

  98. avatar GangreenTed says:

if marshall was such a team distraction why did the players vote him the team captain??

  99. avatar jkjet64 says:

so you’re saying he is not a distraction? what planet are you from?

  100. avatar Dylan says:

    GangreenTed,

Marshall turns 26 this month and Rice turns 24 in September. They are not the same age. And yes, Rice took longer to develop into a great player, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t better. It normally takes receivers about 2 years before they develop into a great player. It only took Marshall one year, but he also had Cutler throwing him the ball instead of Tavaris Jackson.

  101. avatar Corey says:

If anyone thinks that BM can be had for less than Edwards and our 29th, I think they’re dead wrong. If Seattle is offering them their mid first round pick, why would the broncos give him to us for anything less than our late, late first round pick and a player? I just don’t see them pulling the trigger on Edwards and a second rounder when Edwards contract is up at the end of the year and he drops more deep balls than he catches. I bet you they want Cotch and our first which I think would be a big mistake on our part. Cotch is clutch for us and I would be upset to see him go. I don’t think that Tanny will give away our flush hand for a joker, but hey you never know… and I won’t be sad to see us give up our first round pick and edwards for BM… I think the risk is worth the possible reward. We can’t do much worse with BM and minus Edwards. I think this would be a win-win for both organizations.

  102. avatar Dylan says:

    Corey,

You know Marshall’s contract is up at the end of the year too, right? But that doesn’t matter because trading our 1st and our #1 receiver for Marshall would be an absolutely horrendous move.

  103. avatar Corey says:

Last I heard its BM thats available not Rice. Also, do you know BM JK? The way you write about him is like you went to school with the dude and he beat your girlfriend or something. The guy has learned from his mistakes and is looking for a new team to start over on. Look at what Randy Moss did for New England. He had the same label and he made that team championship caliber, no doubt about it. So your telling us we should be happy with ranking worse than 5/6 of the league in passing/receiving? Come on now.

  104. avatar jkjet64 says:

Corey, Seriously? You must be joking. Do you know him? Don’t bring my girlfriend, wife or anybody inot this you idiot. He ogt one of his teammates killed. He is a constant distraction. He’s been fined by his team numerous times.

  105. avatar Corey says:

Yes Dylan I do know that, but that is not keeping other teams from offering him their low first round picks. I would give up my first round pick anyday for a proven top-5 receiver with baggage. He is proven and the potential first round pick is a prospect. Look at how good Gholston is doing for us. BM is no bust.

  106. avatar Dylan says:

    Corey,

And the way that you defend him makes it look like he is your brother. What makes you think that he has learned from his mistakes? Marshall has been getting arrested or in trouble with the law his whole career!

  107. avatar Bent says:

Corey – they can sign him as an RFA and it will only cost the 29th pick so there is no sense in trading MORE than that.

  108. avatar Corey says:

I was making a point JK, stop crying… I did not say anything bad about your family, I was making a point that no one really knows him, so leave what you hear about him in the media out and judge him based on what he does on the field. I also wouldn’t be so quick to point the finger at him for getting his friend killed. Again, you weren’t there to see what really happened, so its all hearsay from the media who blows things way outta proportion to get people to read their media and to sell papers and ads.

  109. avatar Dylan says:

    Corey,

Yeah obviously me having a problem with a dude who beats on women is personal, right? I mean who cares if he is satan himself as long as he can catch the football…

  110. avatar jkjet64 says:

    Corey,

so I guess he is just a victim of the media, huh? Poor Brandon. It’s funny how guys like Thomas Jones or Peyton Manning and so many other Pro’s seem to b so lucky to avoifd that. You ‘re a saint Corey.

  111. avatar Corey says:

The only thing I care about the Jets putting themselves in their best possible position to win a championship while our team is still relatively young. I think BM puts us in a way better position. I don’t know the dude, I am talking purely off of how I have seen him play. The media is always gonna find someone to pick on, so if its not BM, than they will talk about Edwards buying 400 bottles of champagne or some crap. I am media myself, so I know how the media game works.

  112. avatar Bent says:

His numbers improved a lot this year in terms of percentage of balls thrown, but they were still not that great. Since a lot of them were short passes whereas Braylon usually catches the ball downfield, Braylon wasn’t far behind at all on yards per target.

His raw numbers are good, but he is thrown to a lot more than any other WR in the league. It’s not the same as a runner who makes yards by just having a ton of carries because you still have to get separation just to get thrown to, but “he catches everything” is an exaggeration because he caught only about 60% of his targets (and much less last year) and had the same number (or more, depending whose stats you use) of drops as Braylon.

We had a great team going last year. I wish they’d stop replacing elements that we know can succeed with guys who might not fit in any better.

  113. avatar Rizzo says:

Guys, I think we’re all forgetting who our coach is. There is no way he is gonna let David Harris go for a wide receiver. I don’t care who it is, you can forget it. They said they are trying to put a package together to get Brandon. I would think if Tanny even suggests Harris, Rex will leg drop him

  114. avatar Dylan says:

    Corey,

Lol yeah cause buying a lot of alcohol and getting DUIs, getting your teammate killed, assaulting a police officer, and beating on woman more than once are basically the same thing.

  115. avatar Dylan says:

    Bent,

Thats exactly what I am saying! He is a good player, but he is definitely a product of the system. 1100 yards on 100 catches is not very impressive. Normally 100 receptions means closer to 1500 yards. Welker has those types of numbers every year but he catches like 80% of the passes instead of 60%.

  116. avatar Corey says:

So did you witness that Dylan or did you read that online from your favorite media outlet? They were out at the club together so I get it that he’s guilty by association, but think about it in another perspective. Your hanging at the club with your friend and he’s drunk and mouths off to some dude and then gets his ass beat. Is that your fault that he got his ass beat? I’m not saying this dude is perfect by any means, but I don’t think Rex will put up with his crap and I don’t really care about what players do on their off time as long as they perform well on the field. Everyone makes mistakes, especially dudes that get handed millions of dollars at such a young age…But most people grow up and I’d be happy to have him now after he got in trouble and is working on cleaning himself up. I take it you wouldn’t be happy if we got Plaxico either? I would be happy as anything if we picked him up as well, regardless of the club incident. People change, I know that from experience.

  117. avatar jkjet64 says:

    Corey,

There are such things as bad people in this world, right? It is possible that he is what he seems to be, no? What is he doing to rectify his mistakes and change? Are you gettting that info from the media?

  118. avatar Dylan says:

    Corey,

I would take Plaxico and I do believe in second chances. However, I don’t believe that players should get 50 chances. Marshall has been given plenty of opportunities imo.

And I don’t really get your club reference, but Marshall was the one being shot at, and I have a hard time believing it was for no reason.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/02/27/brandon-marshalls-testimony-leaves-no-doubt-he-was-the-real-target/

  119. avatar E. Weeks says:

While Tanny has been known to pull off huge deals, I don’t want to seem him gamble by getting rid of a key part of the team in exchange for a guy who constantly is getting in trouble.

I will say this though, I’m sure Kellen Clemens is somewhere in that trade package.

  120. avatar dakar says:

edwards for marshall in a heart beat…i dont care for marshall’s past crimes…forgive and forget…

    I WANT A SB…

and if it means getting marshall im all for it…besides if scumbagssss like pac man jones and stallworth the drunk driving murderer can have chances to change there venue and have second or even 3rd chances… then i believe MARSHALL does 2…with all the thoughts going through my head right now let me just say these are my thoughts for now…

  121. avatar Benny says:

WTF…Marshall, LT, letting Jones go…I always hate this time of year and it seems with each passing year it gets worse. I am not interested in rooting for a white and green jersey. I want to cheer for the guys in those jerseys, but this revolving door is getting old. Bringing in a few key players at the right time is one thing, letting go of core Jets players during the prime of their career (ie: if they let go off Harris/ Cotchery) is another. If we play KC I am already rooting for TJ to run all over us. They send Cotchery and Harris I may have to buy a Bronco’s jersey……go jets =-0

  122. avatar clint says:

We havn’t even gave Braylon a full year who knows what could happen next year after gaining chemistry between Sanchez. For all we know Marshall might not be able to come in the first year and be the major play maker and with no chemistry Sanchez. I will take my chances with Edwards and draft a WR, Dez’s stock is dropping I would rather have him than Marshall but it’s not a major need. I would really like to have Marty Gilyard possibly in the third or Shipley.

  123. avatar simplysimon2 says:

I’m just glad I’m not Tanny. The dew falls on his head. Let’s see what he has up his gifted sleeve.

  124. avatar Big W says:

Rather have Marshall, than LT. He is one of the top five wrs in the league despite his baggage. Cotchery would be a tough pill to swallow, but I would try to give Braylon instead.

  125. avatar craig says:

This guy makes Plax look like Ghandi. He is a talent, but I would not invest one dime in him because of his off the field issues. Regardless of how good he is I cannot root for him and want him far away from my team.

  126. avatar Daniel says:

Cotchery = catches the tough balls over the middle and makes excellent sideline catches

We don’t need Marshall. A quick and/or speedy slot guy is all we need in the passing department. We’re a run-first team and we already have 2 solid WRs, not to mention an emerging TE in Keller. With Tomlinson/Leon, you also have options coming out of the backfield.

Marshall isn’t even the first Bronco I’d want. I’d take Dumervil and Bailey (could you imagine?) over him.

By all means, go get Marshall if the price is reasonable, but please, PLEASE do not overpay the bastard.

  127. avatar kevin says:

i tihnk we need to get nadamukun suh…trade for the top 3 pick like we did to get sanchez.. [forget] drafting many players and use our picks to draft one beast son of a gun like nadamakong SUH DA BIGGEST BEAST IN THE EAST

  128. avatar JesusRevis says:

I find it funny that so many people are against trading for a top 5 wide receiver.

  129. avatar Le' Sean Roberts says:

Who do you guys think is the worst of the two, Odell Thurman or Brandon Marshall?……..Did Thurman’s career even start at all ?

  130. avatar TJBfan (twitter @infresco4) says:

Although we may not want Marshall, you have to appreciate the due diligence of our FO on any way they can surround Sanchez with weapons. Not many other QB can say they have that luxury.

  131. avatar t $$ says:

some of your responses are just retarded, someone actually wrote that brandon marshall and braylon edwards have the same potential!! Last time I looked Marshall caught more than 100 receptions in the last three years, with two different qb’s mind you and holds NFL records. When has Edwards done anything remotely close to this production? Edwards is a one hit wonder who had a good year when D. Anderson did his best K. Warner impression for one year and he actually CAUGHT the balls thrown at him. Lets not forget, Edwards lead the league in drops more than once… If I get to pick which reciever I can have between these two I’m picking Marshall every single time.

  132. avatar Bent says:

t $$ – please don’t make comments like that on this blog.

In any case, Braylon’s numbers in 2007 (1,239 yards, 16 TDs) stack up nicely against Marshall’s best seasons.

Marshall has been thrown to well over 300 times the last two years. Given the same opportunity, Edwards is capable of posting similar numbers. Maybe not quite as good, but certainly not enough of an upgrade to consider giving up core players, extra picks and millions of dollars for.

  133. avatar JesusRevis says:

If the Jets truly are putting together a package for Marshall, I would be very excited. Just imagine surrounding our 23 year old QB with the best set of skill position players in the NFL, because thats what the Jets would have if they added Marshall. Currently we have Edwards on a 1 year try-out. If we pull off the trade for Marshall, we would have atleast 1 season of a very dynamic receiving core. At the end of the year, the Jets can choose to let Edwards walk and stick with Marshall (the better receiver). Or, if things really work out, we can re-sign both. Either way, I like the fact that the Jets Front Office is always trying to make this team better and especially trying to surround our young QB with great talent.

  134. avatar JesusRevis says:

As far as the “package” the Jets are supposidly putting together for Marshall, I would assume it will consists of a player or two (maybe Bryan Thomas?) and a few draft picks.

  135. avatar GhostLink says:

Marshall is a GREAT player and a play maker. say what you will about the man but he does his job. He is not the reason Denver SUCKS. I want to see the JETS take the next step and PLAYMAKERS will get us there. I believe B Edwards had his share of OFF THE FIELD problems and actually has not had a good season since two years ago, drops passes but we know the potential is there. Marshall is in a higher level as player than BE. I believe T-REX will handle marshall.

  136. avatar Corey says:

Sorry, I disagree… MArshall would be a HUGE addition for us.. Sanchez would have had atleast 5 more TDs if Edwards could catch.. Cotchery hasnt made a big impact.. Jets got as far as they did because of their #1 defense and only 2nd to last (31st) in passing.. Now we all know Sanchez has the arm but the receivers just arent getting the job done.. Getting Marshall would bring 10 more Tds and atleast 100 yards a game to the Jets.. They have ignored this position in the draft (1st round) way too long and now they have to look in a trade for one. If Jets had a “TRUE” #1 go to guy, they would have have won that game against the Colts.. Jets NEEDS Marshall and would go BACK to the AFC game if he is aquired
