Not News News: Ryan Had Gastic Band Installed

by Bassett on March 14th, 2010 at 7:49 am

Last night news broke that Ryan had been in the hospital for a procedure, know we now know what it is.

Jets coach Rex Ryan underwent a weight-loss procedure Saturday to help him fight obesity.

The husky Ryan had lap-band surgery at NYU Medical Center, and was relaxing at his home in New Jersey on Saturday night, team spokesman Bruce Speight told The Associated Press.

Speight said Ryan also had a hernia repaired.

First and most importantly, this won’t please Droseatwork at all

While I get that surgeries of players are of interest to fans, I don’t get why the team has to talk about the lap-band and hernia surgeries of a coach as breaking news.

Is Alvin Keels going to do any advertising for Rex while he is getting ready for the season?

While it isn’t “breaking news,” it is good to see Ryan taking steps to remain healthy — I’d like to see him in Green and White for a long time.

  2. avatar Tos9987 says:

This is news cause everyone is concered hes going to keel over . then whos the head coach Shottie

  3. avatar sackexchange says:

a skinny rex.. i dont know!!!! who is going to punch channinbg crowder now?

  4. avatar spent says:

Wow, he must have really been in bad shape for him to go this far. How strange that a guy with enough focus and determination to become an NFL Head Coach cannot manage his weight with diet and exercise. Maybe the same genetic flaws that make him morbidly obese also make him an indestructible defensive mind. One hand giveth, the other hand stuff cheetos in his mouth…

  5. avatar NamVetJet says:

Wish him all the best. Even with the band, my understanding is that it is still a struggle. I too want to see him as HC for a long time.

  6. avatar Seth (Rochester, NY) says:

No one likes a Skinny Santa or a Skinny Rex. Good luck to Rex, he is a terrific person for us Jets fans…hopefully for LT2 also.

  7. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Like I have stated before I like my coaches chubby. Its shows they are spending every minute of the day working in the facility on making my team better…..not on a treadmill or counting their calorie intake but……

Rex was becoming a mess. I dont need this guy dying while throwing out the red flag next year. Lets hope he loses just enough weight to be considered healthy and stay around for a long time

  8. avatar AKA....Drew says:

I can only imagine what kind of spread Rex threw down at dinner with LT knowing he was going in for this surgery the following day.

This is the type of info I need Jay Glazer for!!!!

  9. avatar Shamik says:

Though we’ll miss the caricature, it’s in Rex’s best interest to lose all that weight. Its certainly not good for his heart. But I guess that means that Tomlinson’s dinner was the last big meal of Rex’s life. Hope LT2 keeps that in mind.

  10. avatar R in CT says:

I don’t think we’ll ever have to worry about typing “Rex Ryan” and “skinny” in the same sentence, unless the phrase “will never be” is in between.

That being said, it’s good that the coach is trying to take himself down a few notches. He can be husky and healthy!

And like others have said, now that we’ve found a coach we all pretty much agree on, I’d hate to see him drop dead on the sideline. Hope it works out for him.

  11. avatar sexy rexy says:

    ummm wtf????????

  12. avatar sweeper says:

It’s important cuz we want Rex to live and remain our coach. Extreme obesity is a killer.

  13. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

I’m happy for him.. Clearly, the training camp diet didn’t work.

  14. avatar sexy rexy says:

    “Now I really am a Sexy Rexy….booyah!!”

  15. avatar Jets4life says:

Quick poll would you rather draft jerry Hughes or golden Tate in the first round

  16. avatar dajetz says:

Rotoworld says the Jets are trying to put a package together for Brandon Marshall. Looks like Cotch would be included apparently.

  17. avatar simplysimon2 says:

Good move. There is a 12 step program that opens with, “Hi. I’m Rex and I’m a compulsive over-eater”. Surgery does not repair the urge to over eat. If one does not overcome the dependency to use food as the “drug of choice” to fight one’s own demons, then it’s yo-yo time with a few months thin and then back on the fat merry-go-round by years end. It is a struggle and it isn’t funny. It’s the hardest lifting for someone in his condition. So as a lover of our team and therefore our coach, I will support his initiative. We are fortunate to have such a colorful leader after Mr. Monotone-Mangini. To us, he is as much a celebrity as Sanchize, so I want to know their states of health on a daily basis. I hope the “old man” wins his battles against himself.

  18. avatar james says:

    @AKA…Drew

I sure hope Rex didn’t stuff down any kind of spread the night before surgery!!!

  19. avatar realty jet fan says:

Who gives a crap. Our coach is like oprah winfrey.

  20. avatar daleinct says:

It’s a desperate move but one that can keep him with us for a long time. Morbid obesity (at least 100 lbs overweight) is no joke and he will never be out of the woods with it. I’m rootin for ya Rex!

  21. avatar nyr2k2 says:

Good for Rexy. I want him with the organization for a long, long time.

  22. avatar bozzie says:

Rex, I wish you a full and speedy recovery. Many years of health, success and happiness as HC of our beloved New York Jets!!!

  23. avatar droseatwork says:

Oh crap. You heard it here first 5-11 season.

    :(

Won’t these people ever learn? Fat coaches win games!!!!!

  24. avatar LukeV says:

Hmm, my mother just died in December after having Gastric bypass!! Hope Rex fairs better!!

  25. avatar Neville says:

I’m really glad Rex did this because I was genuinely concerned about his weight.
Looks like him bringing boxes of donuts to the bathroom are over… (thank you KSK)
Hope this goes better than charlie weis’… I think he almost died from getting one of these.

  26. avatar Jake says:

    You guys disgust me..

how can you sit here and make fun of the guy for being obese? Is it your health? Should you be concerned about it ? Maybe, maybe not. But there are NICE ways to say these things.

The ONLY nice thing I saw was this comment from Bozzie

“Rex, I wish you a full and speedy recovery. Many years of health, success and happiness as HC of our beloved New York Jets!!!”

Not things like, glad he won’t be bringing donuts to the bathroom and stuff like that..

    you people are rude.

  27. avatar NamVetJet says:

Actually Jake, although there were a few jabs—-I think for the most part the comments have been positive and hopeful.

  28. avatar realty jet fan says:

Ofcourse we wish him luck and success with the surgery . My problem is it is a major story . This story could be on e entertainment.

  29. avatar greenie says:

to LukeV: that’s horrible news, sorry to hear it.
this though is not gastric bypass, it’s the stomach band, which can be tightened or loosened or even removed. much less of a deal.
ryan’s doing exactly the right thing.

  30. avatar levi says:

Good move Rex you can still sausage up your cornflakes you just cant eat the whole box now. We want you here for a longtime.

Luke sorry to hear that I know its hard.

  31. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

I am glad he is having this surgery…

Now people can recognize the guy for being the best defensive football coach on the planet instead of the fat guy who coaches the Jets…

and Jake is right some of you people should be ashamed of yourselves

  32. avatar realty jet fan says:

    He is not family.

  33. avatar simplysimon2 says:

    realty—

Have you ever heard of “extended family”? That’s what the jets and their organization is to us fans–something you are obviously unaware of not being a fan, just a friendless agitator. “Love the one’s you’re with”. That’s family. Grow up!

  34. avatar MattydNYJMPT says:

It’s GASTRIC band, not gastic Bassett. This scares me because in 2006 Mangini was nice and plump and we had a surprise year in the playoffs. The next year he sized down considerably, in direct relationship with our win total. Here’s hoping Rexs’ lost poundage weighs more in our favor.
