Florio Clearly More Worried About PR Than PRoduction

by Bassett on March 15th, 2010 at 2:45 pm

Prepare to be shocked. Mike Florio went out of his way to take a swipe at the Jets!!! Based on the Jets saying thank you to Thomas Jones in a KC paper, Florio has gotten a quote from a league source to for the express purpose of bashing the Jets.

Said a league source in response, “If this guy is all the things they’re saying, why didn’t they keep him?”

It’s a great question.

The source believes that if the Jets believed what they said in the ad, they would have kept Jones. The source also believes that the ad represents an effort by the Jets to defuse a potentially volatile situation.

The locker room is loyal to Jones, and players are still upset, we’re told, by the decision to dump him. The locker room also might not be thrilled about the decision to pay LaDainian Tomlinson even more money than the Chiefs paid to Jones.

“Anytime [G.M. Mike] Tannenbaum feels the heat,” the source opined, “he reacts like this. . . . Do you think Jones cares about this [ad]? How do you think he feels about the fact that the paid Tomlinson more money than Jones got in Kansas City?”

So spare us the P.R. ploys. The Jets made a bad decision by getting rid of Jones, they’ve arguably compounded it by signing Tomlinson, and the respective performances of the two players and their teams suddenly has become an interesting story line for the 2010 NFL season.

They publicly said thank you. Wow, what jerks.

“The locker room” also needs to hire an accountant, because last I checked $5.8 million is more than $3.0 million. Or do they not teach players that when tutors are writing their papers for them in college?

The locker room loves Thomas, but would they love him as much if he was dragging the team down? I don’t think so.

No one’s saying it’s easy, but let’s face it, Jones sucked at the end of last season, and he didn’t want to be marginalized, and he didn’t want to take less money. Now is Jones worth the $3 million more than LT? Maybe. but in a reduced role, it’s pretty irrelevant.

If the Jets win, the locker room will get over it quickly. Calling LT a “compounding” of the problem is premature. In my opinion, Florio is one of the worst predictive on-field analysts I have ever seen , which is why he stays away from it like the plague. The man thought Laveranues was going to be the Bengals savior last season. How’d that end?

I just ran some quick numbers, which if I am doing this, then that’s a clear indication of how mad I am. Last year, the Jets ran for an eye-popping 2650 yards with runners not named Mark Sanchez (still tops in the league without the QB). Where I think people fail is thinking that Thomas Jones is being removed from the situation and LT is coming in as a 1:1 replacement.

Those people are idiots.

At most, it’s a half replacement, more like a third with Shonn Greene taking the mantle as top dog.

Let’s look at 2009 how the team stacked up.

2009.JPG

While Leon went down, initially Thomas Jones stepped up his carries, and then Shonn Greene did as well. While these numbers were respectable from a average yards per carry perspective, Brad Smith took a larger role when he needed to to mix it up as Leon once did, and came through for the offense running the Wildcat a number of times.

So, let’s assume the wheels come off the running game, but everyone stays healthy. Imagine Shonn Greene can’t get the push he needs, so his average drops from 5.0 to 4.0. Imagine LaDainian is an utter embarrassment, but the team keeps calling him about seven times a game to run the ball. Imagine, even if Leon is healthy enough to play, he’s just not as productive as he’s ever been for the Jets, but they still have to use him to run 7 times a game. Even imagine teams get wise to how to stop Brad Smith from the Wildcat though they use him more expansively in 2010 there … what then?

Here’s what it might look like.

2010.JPGSo instead of just leading the league in rushing, they’d come in a devastating THIRD (just ahead of Miami) by 2009 standings … without a single scramble yard from the QB. Now I’m not saying this is how it will happen or that these guys stay healthy, but even in a worst case, I still firmly believe this team will be fine.

Mike Florio might be great when it comes to blatant rumor mongering, or making PR nicey nice, but Rex Ryan and his new lap-band can vomit up more than he’ll ever know about the game of football.

I’ll take Ryan’s assessment, thank you very much.

Thanks to W. Adams on this one.

I think Jay Glazer put it best – LT isn’t replacing the role Jones played for most of ’09, he’s replacing the role Jones played at the end of ’09.

I read this site all the time and never comment but I have to now. That was a kick butt rebuttal Basset!

  3. avatar Bassett says:

as a note to myself, I do think that if the Jets running game was to be so bad on an average per carry basis, they wouldn’t get that many carries over the course of the season. the running game still needs to move the chains, which this one wouldn’t … which basically undercuts my whole argument … lol

  4. avatar Dylan says:

If Greene stays healthy, he will run for 1500 yards. He is faster than Jones and harder to bring down. He is also more patient than TJ when it comes to hitting the hole. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if he averaged 5 ypc. I think Leon and LT will be good for about 900-1000 combined rushing yards. The Jets will lead the league in rushing again next year. Our improved passing game will make our running game even better.

  7. avatar Jack says:

Exactly. And that’s making some very conservative estimates of the production of the backfield.

Another factor that keeps getting overlooked is that Sanchez and the passing game last year was among the worst in the league. Not unexpected with a rookie and significant changes at the reciever postion but there it is. Next year I expect significantly more focus on the passing game and more production. Even Sanchez only goes from 162 ypg to a still very average 200 yards per game that’s an extra 640 ypg, more than enough to more than offset any fall off in the running game.

We ran the ball more than 80 times than the next highest team total. The dog won’t hunt forever.

Sanchez wasn’t drafted to hand the ball off 38 times a game. There will be much more balance going forward and we don’t need two battering ram running backs.

Thomas Jones is gonna have a blast watching Jamaal Charles steal the show. Enough of the comparrisons between him and LT. Jones is a product of our line and our system, its not the other way around. He scored 1 TD his first year!

  12. avatar Randy says:

You know…I think its a double standard here.

Because the Jets signed LT, some analyst say that LT is washed up and the Jets should have kept Jones instead, based on his season stats.

If LT had signed with the Vikings ever analyst would be saying, LT is in the perfect situation and might even surprise people, taking some carries away from Petterson and rejuvinating his career.

Bottom line is this…We werent going to pay Thomas Jones 6M dollars to be the backup of this team for 1 year when we can spend the same amount to Lt and we are getting 2 years out of him as Greenes backup.Id expect the reason for signing LT is insurance for Greene carrying the bulk and I would also expect the Jets to bring back Washington to make our Running Game better than it was at the end of last season.

I LOVE TJ…He is forever going to be the guy that got the Jets recognition again, and was a true leader on the field.Unfortunetly though Jones is about to be on the downside of his career and if you remember, Jones was average before he came to the Jets that gave him the Offensive line that certainly fixed most of his stats. As much credit is given to Jones…The same should be said about how well our offensive line can make any runningback look good.Thats why im confident witha good offensive line that LT could be a steal.Lets face it….The Chargers Line is a joke and is built for pass protection not Run.

So how much of LTs stats are to blame because Injury and a bad Line?

We will see Jones have the same problem next season im sure…He will not even crack 1000 yards im sad to say but thats the truth about the matter.Sometimes our line is given credit, but certainly not enough..

You beat me to it lol..That Offensive Line is going to make Thomas Jones look washed up while Charles takes the carries away.At the end of the season they will be finally agreeing with the Jets saying letting go Thomas Jones and signing LT was another great move by Mike T

  17. avatar Jason says:

I think when you factor out the fact that Jones had an abnormal number of huge runs inflating his average that would never happen again, especially with less carries, you get a neutral move. I think the one thing that people also fail to appreciate is that LT can still be a 50 reception guy. He did not do that last year because the Chargers played a different style of offense which was “bombs away” most of the time. Beyond Braylon and J-Co the receiving stats were really poor last year. Sanchez needs targets and LT is a dependable one.

The only way this compounds a problem is if the Jets choose to move Washington and it turns out that Washington was healthy and also a gamechanger. Before he got hurt last year Washington was more or less a non-factor. And its pretty crazy to think that the Jets players would be against this move out of loyalty to TJ. If you polled the Jets and asked them who they would rather play with – LT or Jones- its a no brainer that I think they would say Tomlinson.

  18. avatar JesusRevis says:

I’ll never understand why so many people go out of their way to bash this team no matter what we do.

  19. Bassett, that was great.

Now I’m not one to defend Florio, but the way I read his article, you did mess up one thing Brian:

You wrote ““The locker room” also needs to hire an accountant, because last I checked $5.8 million is more than $3.0 million.’.

But Florio (who is still an idiot) said that: “The locker room also might not be thrilled about the decision to pay LaDainian Tomlinson even more money than the Chiefs paid to Jones.” and “How do you think he (TJ) feels about the fact that they paid Tomlinson more money than Jones got in Kansas City?”

So the comparison you made of $5.8 m vs. $3m is inaccurate, because that is what TJ would have gotten here, not in KC. Unless I am missing something. And whether I am or not, Florio is still a tool.

  20. avatar WW85 says:

According to Cimini: TJ is only making $3mm this year in KC which the Jets refused to match. They basically traded TJ for LT. I agree with the article which I’m sure to get bashed for.

If Cimini’s facts are right, then what exactly is wrong with the article?

  21. avatar Bent says:

NYCPE – it was reported he’s getting less than 3m in year one and year two is probably not guaranteed. The only way he gets more than Jones is if they bring him back (which they’ll only do if the move pans out).

  22. avatar Randy says:

    Organized Chaos

Sounds like Favre is coming back…AGAIN lol

I find it funny how most Vikings fans think they have a better team than us without Favre.Without Favre, the Vikings are an average 1 dementional team who runs the ball, plays good defense and has no QB to throw the ball.We made the right decision on Getting our long term QB than have to rely on a 40 year old QB who is 1 bad injury away from destroying the Vikings season.

Unfortunately I believe that is part of the karma that surrounds the Jets, only a kickass take no prisoners guy like Rex can kill it for good

  24. avatar Randy says:

If I were the Vikings I would be worrying about bringing in a replacement for Brett Favre because they have no backup plan if he decides to retire.Do they reallly think Tavarious Jackson is their future QB????lol what a joke

  25. avatar AKA...Drew says:

Mike Florio just continues to be a douce. Why cant you appriecate someone and part ways? Its a business ass.

Locker room problem? Mangold and Woody have both stated they were pretty pumped to have LT in the mix via their twitter. It comes down to the Coach (who along with Sanchez) are the face of the team. Rex owns the locker room people….not TJ. The players adjust just like they do every year.

I didnt want LT but like most people (like myself) have excepted it.

  26. avatar Bob says:

The real question isnt whether Jones really cares about the ad it’s whether Tanny really cares what Florio thinks.

  27. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    Jesus

This is why Rex is loved by the fanbase and players. He makes them and us feel proud to be a Jets fan….

Screw them all. They hated all last season while we rolled to the AFC Championship game.

  28. avatar Ray says:

well said. i’m tired of these idiots constantly comparing Jones’ numbers last year to LT’s like it’s indicative of how he’s going to perform. Hello! it’s a different line and scheme.!! It’s like comparing apples to oranges. The bottom line is the Jets believe LT is a better option for the money. i personally agree but as a fan, i’ll usually assume they know what they’re doing.

  29. avatar Randy says:

My last comment about Brett Favre…

I think its great how when Favre left, everyone was saying the Jets wouldnt be a good team in 2009 and turned out we were a better team without Favre and our QB is here for the longterm, not for just another year. And how Ironic was it that we made it as far as Favre did for the Vikings. So in retrorespect Favre at his best would have bought us to the Conference Championship game and we would be thinking about if he would be back this season.

    Instead

Only QB concern is if Mark Sanchez improves off his great posteseason

  30. avatar JesusRevis says:

I was never a huge supporter of signing LT, but now that is official i’m not going to start bashing it. I think the signing could have a lot of upside and I trust this Front Office to make good decisions.

Does anyone else thinks its awkward that LT will be backing up a runningback who mocked his famous TD dance during the AFC Divisional round? Or that the entire Jets team spent their plane ride home from SD dancing to, and mocking LT’s music video?

  31. Bent – I know, but the point Bassett made that I commented about isn’t that LT is getting more than TJ, it’s that line: “The locker room” also needs to hire an accountant, because last I checked $5.8 million is more than $3.0 million.’

The $5.8m clearly refers to what TJ would have gotten here, while Florio the tool said that our locker room would be pissed because LT is getting more than TJ. So while Florio the tool was wrong (shock! surprise!), the point I was making is that Bassett made it seem like the locker room needs to know that $5.8m (what TJ would’ve gotten here) is more than the $3m we’re paying LT, but flo was only talking about what TJ gets in KC vs. what LT gets here. Again, he was wrong about who’s getting more, but the $5.8m is irrelevant.

  32. avatar JetSetRadio says:

Umm get over it guys Shonn Greene is the man now as he was at the end of the season… this isn’t about LT, TJ, or LW

Were was TJ when we needed him the most…. he was a shell of himself and Shonn was bulldozing dudes… JETS fans don’t fret Shonn “War Machine” Greene is the truth and he will hush all this garbage whining once he gets his hands on the ball again in 2010.

As far as leadership and guys being madd.. i don’t know about that some very key players seemed very excited on twitter…. and if you guys recall Rex said he wants Revis and Harris to step up as leaders maybe he wants these guys to take over the role that TJ had as a leader since this is a Defense first team and this will also help Sanchez to have more shine as a leader.

ANd i don’t believe Shonn will have that many carries im thinking more like 290 and LT with only 280 yards and 2.5 avg. thats a little wild Basset i just think you really hate LT or you just really loved TJ.

  33. avatar Drew says:

School is now in session! Nice Bassett. Florio is the smoke monster. And a douche.

  34. avatar Brendan says:

    NYCPE,

The $5.8 mil isn’t irrelevant. That’s what TJ was originally going to get and what he refused to renegotiate. When he hit the market and his phone fell silent and he wasn’t getting big money offers, he tried to backtrack to the Jets who had already decided to move on.

  35. avatar Randy says:

    AKA…DREW

And if my memory serves me correctly, Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez were at the dinner trying to recruit LT..so obviously they are fin with the move

  36. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    Jesus

The best part about Greene’s run is the guy who wouldnt tackle him and the guy he mocked in the endzone are both NY Jets now….lol

In saying that I wouldnt think its a problem at all. Plus LT and Peterson had some words before the season and he was going to go there.

  37. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

The ONE good thing about Florio…..

He creates situations where all of us TJBers (we need a creative name..ha) are in full agreement..

  38. avatar belvey631 says:

    War Bassett!!!

  39. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    Randy

Exactly….. Yes TJ was a big locker room guy but this is the year that Revis, Rex and Sanchez run this team….with a little touch of bad ass Bart Scott chirping

  40. avatar WW85 says:

NYPE: The thing is we COULD have taken TJ for the KC price. Just look at Cimini’s blog-he says the Jets refused to match the KC offer. In other words, TJ & LT would have been virtually the same price.

Either Cimini or BAssett confused the facts.

I’m willing to accept that the Jets think LT adds more value than TJ(I totally disagree) but at least I can understand it.

  41. avatar AKA...Drew says:

Again I didnt want LT becasue I think he might be done…..if hes not he adds a much different element than TJ did.

They are not the same player and but they both would have been backing up War Machine this year

  42. Brendan –

it is clearly irrelevant to the article florio wrote. Florio (who I cannot believe I am defending because he sucks donkey balls as a “journalist”) said that the jets locker room wouldn’t like that LT is getting more than Jones is getting from KC. he was wrong about this, but nowhere did he mention the what the Jets originally were contracted to pay TJ before they cut him.

So while what you wrote above may be quite relevant to why the Jets moved on from TJ (although as many reports state that they could have matched KC’s offer but chose not to, florio could have mentioned that – but that is treating him like an actual reporter), it is quite irrelevant to what I wrote above RE: the $5.8m.

  43. avatar RJ says:

LT is here to spell Shonn Greene some carries and will catch the ball out of the back field. LT knows what his role is going to be and TJ would have never agreed to a lesser role.

There were reports towards the end of the year that when they told TJ that he would have a lesser role to Greene he was pissed.

TJ was a great Jet but he would have been a distraction.

  44. avatar JetSetRadio says:

I thought that LT was soft after seeing that dancing video but he actually he just has a good sense of humor check out his video series on youtube with Kimbo Slice its pretty hilarious.. I think he will fiit in with these group of guys.

  45. avatar OriginalJetFan says:

The above article was totally ridiculous, what he said was lets look at 2010 vs 2009 and assume that the YPC of each runner in 2010 goes down 20-25% vs last year. The writer in his own words is”an idiot”, of course if your top 3 runners get 20-25% worse , the team gets worse.

But if they don’t get worse 2010 yds go up, more passes are caught out of the backfield, too. Didn’t any of these people watch the second half of the year,? unless TJ got a hole you could drive a truck through he got nothing, he’s late to the whole every play>

Jets , barring injury will have better rushing this year, simply because people will have to play the pass more. .

TJ has a respectable year , 3.8 yds a carry for 879 yds, tops.

  46. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

AKA Drew and myself were leading the charge that LT was using the Jets to sign with the Vikes…and we were both very wrong…lol

This is my feelings about LT

Seen the guy play every game for 6 years. He cant do it himself anymore. He cant make something out of nothing. LT needs the play blocked right or he’s going for no gain. He is done as a feature back or focal point of an offense. The guy needs a diesel o line and a team that is committed to running the football to be successful

I think LT knows this, because the Jets are one of the only teams that LT could still play, and play well, on. The Jets pound the rock and IMO, have the best run blocking o line in the NFL, bar none. Plus he can still catch passes and has tremendous instincts

I wouldnt expect more than 1 or 2 runs over 20 yards from LT. What I would expect are consistent positive carries. If the Jets can get a push up front, LT is just quick enough and smart enough to find the hole

With that being said, Im going on record that LT can still contribute as long as its in a reduced role. He isnt going to be the guy that people think of when you mention “LT2″ but the Jets dont need him to be…

  47. avatar Brendan says:

I get what you’re saying NYCPE. I guess it’s Florio reporting an incomplete (and incorrect) story that’s the real issue. If he reported it as he should have, Bassett’s point would make more sense. I doubt this locker room is dumb enough to not realize TJ is making more $ and LT will be cut if he sucks this year (assuming his 2nd year isn’t guaranteed). But if that’s the case, and Florio is correct in his report, someone needs to make this info very blatant and available where the players will see it and it can help calm the locker room. A locker room, I may add, that i doubt is in the turmoil that the media would have fans believe. It’s not like TJ was one veteran on a team of children, there are a large number of leading veterans on this team, the locker room will get over it once they hear their first speech from Rex.

  48. avatar jcjets says:

The last department I worked in screwed me out of a pay increase before my promotion. But they still wanted to take me out to lunch, and give me a plaque. Classy, right? I accepted, but if they really wanted to do something classy, they would have done what was right and given me my increase.

its not a big deal, but to me, the ad was a shallow attempt at honoring Jones because he was popular and productive.

  49. avatar Brian DiPiazza says:

Well said….Even if Tomlinson is not the same kind of runner, his hands alone are going to benefit this team in the long run…This is a guy that had 100 catches in a season…the Jets offense revolves on screens and 0 patterns…if Leon isn’t healthy, they would still need another guy to handle those situations anyway…Mr. T has ALWAYS steered this organization towards winning and winning now and he knows that LT is a better fit for the offense right now than TJ is, regardless of loyalty…Love what u did for us TJ, but Shonn is #1 and Leon isnt a guarantee..just for now, Leon on KR with Brad Smith is a bonus for what to expect of him in ’10…LT is a better fit and CHEAPER….way to go fellas

  50. avatar Brendan says:

    WW85,

That report by Cimini is speculation. That is not a factual report. He’s assuming, based on how Tanny didn’t answer certain questions. I’ll repeat: by the way Tanny DIDN’T answer. The “Jets didn’t match the contract” has yet to be proven by anyone involved with the actual talks (Jets or TJ’s side).

  51. avatar Lance Mehl says:

I had to respond in the comments section of that rag .. it is incredible how stupid people are .. and to listen to Chief fans bad mouth Tanny – when the Chumps are 10-38 the last 3 years .. wow

the best comment was “The Jets will go 9-7 and miss the playoffs” – I guess like this year when they went 9-7 and won 2 playoff games? nice work ..

  52. Brendan,

Agree with you that Florio is a clown and that the locker room probably is not worked up about this at all. They all know it’s a business.
FWIW, TJ could just as easily be cut after this year if he blows in KC as I assume his 2nd year isn’t guaranteed either. It seems to me like this is a pretty even trade of players for the same money IF the Jets could’ve matched KC’s offer, but refused. Now, if you are right and this may not even be the case, it’s a moot point.
Either way, I will root for whoever wears a Jets uniform. I didn’t want Favre here, but rooted for him when he was here and would do no less for LT.
I do trust our HC and FO and hope that LT shines in his (hopefully) limited role.

  53. avatar Tom in Raleigh says:

I just don’t get it. What is it that some of these Jets fans (and Florio as well) saw in TJ last year that makes him worth the amount of money he was looking for from the Jets?!?

His numbers were a product of the system…not something he achieved on his own in some Barry Sanders-type way.

He fell through holes and benefited from a run blocking o line that was playing about 8 feet across the line of scrimmage.

Thanks for the common sense numbers Bassett. I cheered for TJ and I will cheer for LT. He is a great fit for this team, we have a three headed running monster. I am pumped to see the War Machine rumble this year and for the rest of our backs to do well.

I think LT will have a renaissance year.

  54. avatar JetSetRadio says:

TJ was mad he had a reduced role and things would get worse with shonn as the starter this year… the Jets were ready to move on much like the Colts getting rid of Edgerin James and Giants getting rid of Tiki Barber both teams went on to win the Superbowl…lets cross our fingers.

I can recall during the Chargers game TJ was starting and they showed shonn greene with his arms crossed and a mad look on his face maybe he had a problem with TJ although he would never speak on it because the guy is a class act.

  55. avatar Roger says:

If the jets had not signed LT and we had done as Florio wanted hung onto TJ we were not going to run the ball again like we did last season. Everyone forgets that regardless of the injury to Leon Washington our offesne was still not motoring properly due rokkie Mark Sanchez’s leadership. Also, our passing game was suffering without any deep threat so opposing defenses were crushushing our short pass and catch game. Three things happened. The injury to LW, the trade for deep thread B. Edwards and a change in the offense to more ball control ie. run, run, run and pass safely. Hence, TJ goes over 300 carries again…..the difference this year is our O-Line under Bill Callian finally are in control..none of this 2 yd a cary stuff and we are running over everybody and anybody. Now Sanchez by closing part of the season is looking cool and in the playoffs is using both ends of the game exceptionally weel. Looking to 2010….watch for more passing, more Brad Smith in the offense whcih means less rushing attempts. That should fit fine for LT, Green and LW & the rest of the Jets rush attack. I like what we have done. Go JETS Go!

  56. avatar Shamik says:

KC’s paying jones 3 mil this year, LDT’s getting 5.2-5.8 over two years. I don’t see a problem.

  57. Bassett — great analysis…opinions supported by facts…how refreshing!!

  58. avatar SackDance99 says:

I posted this on another thread, but I think it belongs here, too:

Another point to put TJ’s 2009 season in context. If you net out the first Buffalo game where the OL blew open huge holes in their 8 in the box defense resulting in huge gainers for TJ, his YPC was 3.9 for the 15 other games. Also, if you think it’s unfair taking the Buffalo game out, how about adding in TJ’s playoff carries? Then his YPC goes from 4.2 to 4.0. And, if you then net that 1 Buffalo game out from his 19 games (including playoffs), his YPC goes from 3.9 to 3.7! I’m not bashing TJ here, but realistically, I just don’t see LT doing much worse than TJ because I think TJ played worse than his raw numbers indicated or, putting it somewhat differently, that Buffalo game vastly inflated his numbers.

  59. avatar Tom in Raleigh says:

Well said SackDance. I don’t see a drop off here at all.

  60. avatar Murrjet says:

Why does everyone focus on what Jones was in 09.

In the 2007 season, Jones carried the ball 310 times for 1,119 yards, . However, he averaged a subpar 3.6 yards a carry, and scored only one rushing TD, as the Jets stumbled to a 4-12 finish.

After 2007 we were saying he is done!

Line means a world of difference to a RB

i looked at these numbers and did walk a down memory lane. in 1989 when the giants won the super bowl. o.j. anderson (a very good runner) came off four years of nothingness at age 32 ( check it out) and had barely a 1000 yd (3.3ypg) season to help lead the offense in a year simms only threw for 3000 yds, while the rushing game only had 1800 yds. they did not have a green. they did not have a washington. they had a great d like the jets are getting now. the assumptions that mark won’t improve as a quarterback and grow to pick up the slack is not included. by the way anderson had heart and something to prove. i believe that something might be the same for LT. this may be his wake up call. maybe he will be the Lt that will lead this new york team to a super bowl. cool your jets everyone

hey guys, forgot to ask about this yesterday, but found this on the Post:

The Jets are talking about putting together a deal to acquire Broncos WR Brandon Marshall, according to the National Football Post.
Jets sources tell NFP’s Michael Lombardi, “that they’re having internal discussions regarding Brandon Marshall and would love to put together a package of players that might entice the Broncos and still keep their first-round pick.”

What would you guys say if we could keep a draft pick and add marshall? (assuming we dont trade our core players)

if shonn didnt do so well in the las 8 games including the playoffs tj wouldnt have been cut and possibly extended straight up instead of taking a paycut…about the whole lockeroom thing theses guys were so close to a superbowl they aint going to let 1 or 2 players getting cut stop them from the their ultimate goal

  66. avatar WOJF says:

    Shonn Greene, 320 carries? Really?

The guy who could not stay on the field his first three years in school and was injured a few times in a limited roll last year? The guy that struggled with fumbles early on last year? Are you absolutely positively certain he can stand up to the punishment of being an every down back in the NFL? Without reverting to fumbling?

Well, if not, we have a problem.

  67. avatar WOJF says:

This my my final comment on the matter, I promise.

Was there one list of top available free agents that had LT ranked higher than TJ?

Now, I retire to my work and my dreams of a Super Bowl until the next big controversy arises, or the draft, whichever comes first.

Hopefully this all works out for the best, hopefully the brain trust truly does know something about these two players that we mere fans have no way of discerning from stats and video. Hopefully their work is not done, and soon they will grant us A Thomas and maybe even Landry, and a pass rusher that can actually rush the passer in the draft a slot reciever that can catch the damn ball in traffic.

Lastly, hopefully we kick the Patriots ass in Week 1 in our home opener on MNF!

  68. I actually really love your argument about the rushing yards, despite your admission that a team that did not run as well as last year’s team wouldn’t receive as many carries. Sometimes stats don’t tell the whole story. In fact, I’m not going to look at one stat right now to back up what I’m about to say. I am speaking as an informed observer who watches every game.

Jones frequently picked up huge chunks of yardage in the 2nd half of games on single runs. I can remember a handful of games where Jones was pretty ordinary until the o-line freed him up for huge gains. This inflated his stats (though earned) and made his YPC look better than it really was.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved the guy. But he was pretty ineffective late in the season and for parts of the beginning as well. His great season owed a lot to an overpowering offensive line and a complete commitment to the running game.

LT is going to be just fine in the role that TJ settled into last season, and more importantly the Jets as team will be fine.

    WOJF

First of all, Shonn Greene wasnt hurt at Iowa. He did not qualify academically.

Secondly, a limited role? He got banged up when he was CARRYING THE JETS ON HIS BACK. He got banged up, not seriously injured. He didnt blow out his MCL, PCL or ACL. You are taking the AFC Champ. and basing your whole point off of one game.

I dont know how many times I have to explain this to you people. You cant base the mistakes a guy makes his rookie season as a projection for his career. You know your boy TJ had a fumbling problem his first few years in the NFL? Look it up. Curtis Martin did too, look it up. Peyton Manning threw almost 30 INTS his rookie year. You will die, you will pay taxes and rookies will make a ton of mistakes, those things are certain in life…

How many times did Greene fumble down the stretch when he almost carried the Jets to the Super Bowl? A big fat goose egg

This is what happens when you are a 22 or 23 year old stud RB that destroys everyone in the playoffs…the 30+ guy gets pushed aside and you take over…its how its done in the NFL…why you people are even questioning this is beyond me

Are you all you guys forgetting about Leon Washington???? He’s dirty!!! I don’t remember anyone ever calling him injury prone or a fumble dummy. When he touches the rock he can do major damage and I think he should get the rock 15 to 20 times a game. Yea he broke his leg but until then I really thought he was gonna have a great year, I know he’s working hard and I know he will be 100% ready to go next year. We just gotta find a way to rid him of his agent.

LT had 100 L-E-S-S attempts than tj did last year behind a much worse o-line………so lets relax

  75. avatar GANGGREEN says:

Bassett that must have been a JOKE right? LT 260 yds this season…Give me a break..If LT stays healty he should get close to 1000 plus total yards running and catching the ball…260 yds thats got me LMFAO….Yeah right…..

  76. avatar rusty sanchez says:

tj been bitching about his contract for 2 years now and i think the jets were looking for the chance to get rid of him first chance they got i think the emergence of shonn helped them make that decision quicker

  77. avatar Bent says:

Ganggreen – it’s a worst case scenario. He was being deliberately cautious to show how even if he struggles, the Jets should be in good shape.

1,000 yards does seem a little ambitious, but Bassett’s analysis shows what an impact that would have.

  78. avatar kc says:

    GET EM’ BASSETT!…..they’re clueless.

  79. avatar Crystal Gunns says:

Bass…very well done. To me LT wasn’t about replacing Jones, it’s about replacing Leon. We can’t depend on getting Leon back 100%. So look we got a pass-catching, versatile back who knows the Schotty offense and he’s a name. We can debate whether or not he’s shot but he’s still a name and for sure this had to do with PSL’s and jerseys and that’s why Jones isn’t here.

  80. avatar kc says:

I see akadrew changed his tune a little….did he just say (above) that LDT “MIGHT” be done!?? This from the guy who was RANTING ridiculously about how LDT was washed up!??

  81. avatar jon in bk says:

You haven’t outlined the worst case scenario, Bassett. In that case, Greene goes down injured in week 2 and an over-the-hill lt drags us to 6-10.

You can say there’s no accounting for injury, but isn’t TJ’s durability one of his best qualities?

I, for one, think it made perfect sense to can TJ, despite his great years, based on salary and age. I just wonder if it wouldn’t have been worth bringing in a more expensive, more likely to excel option than LT.

  84. avatar Jetsfan332 says:

I agree with JohnnyMac…..if you recall last year there were several games where TJ had one or two big runs late in the game to inflate his average. These long runs were more a function of huge holes opened up by our O line than by TJ making people miss. LT has more speed than TJ but less power, so if those same holes open up LT goes for even longer runs. Finally LT is now a complementary back to Greene & has motivation to show he is not washed up (ala Favre post Jets). TJ played with a lot of heart & the best of luck to him, but the Jets wagon was tied more effectively to Greene at the end of last year. We will be MORE EFFECTIVE this year…..go JETS!!!!

  85. avatar WOJF says:

Eddie, please dont waste your time ” explaining thing to me”, I am not an idiot and you are not an all knowing being.

We disagree, a difference of opinion. I am not right, you are not right, no one knows, that is why it is an opinion. You want to debate the issue go ahead, that is what this forum is for, but trash the attitude.

I am not comfortable relying on an obviously talented yet unproven back one year after just missing the Super Bowl, obviously you are. You are 100% sure he will overcome his negatives, I am not.

    I hope you are right.

In college, Shonn Greene was academically ineligible for one season the balance of his career he was banged up and/or backing up. He sat out that year and returned a monster, but my point is, like all rookies, he has not carried the load in the NFL for an entire season as the primary back. He missed time with minor injuries early in the year, then again in the biggest game of the year. I think it is fair to question his ability to stay on the field.

The primary back on a power rushing team is a very different roll than entering the game for a series or two with fresh legs as the change of pace back.

He might handle it, he might not, but I believe, again my opinion, it is a mistake to assume he will adjust to and handle this roll especially 320 carries worth, which few backs can do. Note that I am specifically referring to the bloggers assertion that he will carry the ball 320 times, which is a very optimistic assertion that even he admits.

Exactly THREE backs ran the ball 320 yards last season so I think my point is well taken.

TJ’s carries will be tough to replace, just like a third starter in MLB that eats innings. His stats might not be the best, but he helps the team.

  86. avatar Brendan says:

    WOJF,

I’m not trying to jump into this debate, but it is true that Greene never had injury issues before this season. He had a mild ankle injury his one season starting at Iowa, that he obviously played through. The kid is tough, but when you can’t breathe it’s hard to run (and his rib problems left him gasping for air in pain).

I don’t want to get into the debate though, my stance is well known and TJ is gone so I don’t really want to keep bringing him up.
