Florio Clearly More Worried About PR Than PRoduction

By Bassett on 15. Mar, 2010

Prepare to be shocked. Mike Florio went out of his way to take a swipe at the Jets!!! Based on the Jets saying thank you to Thomas Jones in a KC paper, Florio has gotten a quote from a league source to for the express purpose of bashing the Jets.

Said a league source in response, “If this guy is all the things they’re saying, why didn’t they keep him?”

It’s a great question.

The source believes that if the Jets believed what they said in the ad, they would have kept Jones. The source also believes that the ad represents an effort by the Jets to defuse a potentially volatile situation.

The locker room is loyal to Jones, and players are still upset, we’re told, by the decision to dump him. The locker room also might not be thrilled about the decision to pay LaDainian Tomlinson even more money than the Chiefs paid to Jones.

“Anytime [G.M. Mike] Tannenbaum feels the heat,” the source opined, “he reacts like this. . . . Do you think Jones cares about this [ad]? How do you think he feels about the fact that the paid Tomlinson more money than Jones got in Kansas City?”

So spare us the P.R. ploys. The Jets made a bad decision by getting rid of Jones, they’ve arguably compounded it by signing Tomlinson, and the respective performances of the two players and their teams suddenly has become an interesting story line for the 2010 NFL season.

They publicly said thank you. Wow, what jerks.

“The locker room” also needs to hire an accountant, because last I checked $5.8 million is more than $3.0 million. Or do they not teach players that when tutors are writing their papers for them in college?

The locker room loves Thomas, but would they love him as much if he was dragging the team down? I don’t think so.

No one’s saying it’s easy, but let’s face it, Jones sucked at the end of last season, and he didn’t want to be marginalized, and he didn’t want to take less money. Now is Jones worth the $3 million more than LT? Maybe. but in a reduced role, it’s pretty irrelevant.

If the Jets win, the locker room will get over it quickly. Calling LT a “compounding” of the problem is premature. In my opinion, Florio is one of the worst predictive on-field analysts I have ever seen , which is why he stays away from it like the plague. The man thought Laveranues was going to be the Bengals savior last season. How’d that end?

I just ran some quick numbers, which if I am doing this, then that’s a clear indication of how mad I am. Last year, the Jets ran for an eye-popping 2650 yards with runners not named Mark Sanchez (still tops in the league without the QB). Where I think people fail is thinking that Thomas Jones is being removed from the situation and LT is coming in as a 1:1 replacement.

Those people are idiots.

At most, it’s a half replacement, more like a third with Shonn Greene taking the mantle as top dog.

Let’s look at 2009 how the team stacked up.

2009.JPG

While Leon went down, initially Thomas Jones stepped up his carries, and then Shonn Greene did as well. While these numbers were respectable from a average yards per carry perspective, Brad Smith took a larger role when he needed to to mix it up as Leon once did, and came through for the offense running the Wildcat a number of times.

So, let’s assume the wheels come off the running game, but everyone stays healthy. Imagine Shonn Greene can’t get the push he needs, so his average drops from 5.0 to 4.0. Imagine LaDainian is an utter embarrassment, but the team keeps calling him about seven times a game to run the ball. Imagine, even if Leon is healthy enough to play, he’s just not as productive as he’s ever been for the Jets, but they still have to use him to run 7 times a game. Even imagine teams get wise to how to stop Brad Smith from the Wildcat though they use him more expansively in 2010 there … what then?

Here’s what it might look like.

2010.JPGSo instead of just leading the league in rushing, they’d come in a devastating THIRD (just ahead of Miami) by 2009 standings … without a single scramble yard from the QB. Now I’m not saying this is how it will happen or that these guys stay healthy, but even in a worst case, I still firmly believe this team will be fine.

Mike Florio might be great when it comes to blatant rumor mongering, or making PR nicey nice, but Rex Ryan and his new lap-band can vomit up more than he’ll ever know about the game of football.

I’ll take Ryan’s assessment, thank you very much.

Thanks to W. Adams on this one.

tj been bitching about his contract for 2 years now and i think the jets were looking for the chance to get rid of him first chance they got i think the emergence of shonn helped them make that decision quicker

Ganggreen – it’s a worst case scenario. He was being deliberately cautious to show how even if he struggles, the Jets should be in good shape.

1,000 yards does seem a little ambitious, but Bassett’s analysis shows what an impact that would have.

Bass…very well done. To me LT wasn’t about replacing Jones, it’s about replacing Leon. We can’t depend on getting Leon back 100%. So look we got a pass-catching, versatile back who knows the Schotty offense and he’s a name. We can debate whether or not he’s shot but he’s still a name and for sure this had to do with PSL’s and jerseys and that’s why Jones isn’t here.

You haven’t outlined the worst case scenario, Bassett. In that case, Greene goes down injured in week 2 and an over-the-hill lt drags us to 6-10.

You can say there’s no accounting for injury, but isn’t TJ’s durability one of his best qualities?

I, for one, think it made perfect sense to can TJ, despite his great years, based on salary and age. I just wonder if it wouldn’t have been worth bringing in a more expensive, more likely to excel option than LT.

I agree with JohnnyMac…..if you recall last year there were several games where TJ had one or two big runs late in the game to inflate his average. These long runs were more a function of huge holes opened up by our O line than by TJ making people miss. LT has more speed than TJ but less power, so if those same holes open up LT goes for even longer runs. Finally LT is now a complementary back to Greene & has motivation to show he is not washed up (ala Favre post Jets). TJ played with a lot of heart & the best of luck to him, but the Jets wagon was tied more effectively to Greene at the end of last year. We will be MORE EFFECTIVE this year…..go JETS!!!!

Eddie, please dont waste your time ” explaining thing to me”, I am not an idiot and you are not an all knowing being.

We disagree, a difference of opinion. I am not right, you are not right, no one knows, that is why it is an opinion. You want to debate the issue go ahead, that is what this forum is for, but trash the attitude.

I am not comfortable relying on an obviously talented yet unproven back one year after just missing the Super Bowl, obviously you are. You are 100% sure he will overcome his negatives, I am not.

    I hope you are right.

In college, Shonn Greene was academically ineligible for one season the balance of his career he was banged up and/or backing up. He sat out that year and returned a monster, but my point is, like all rookies, he has not carried the load in the NFL for an entire season as the primary back. He missed time with minor injuries early in the year, then again in the biggest game of the year. I think it is fair to question his ability to stay on the field.

The primary back on a power rushing team is a very different roll than entering the game for a series or two with fresh legs as the change of pace back.

He might handle it, he might not, but I believe, again my opinion, it is a mistake to assume he will adjust to and handle this roll especially 320 carries worth, which few backs can do. Note that I am specifically referring to the bloggers assertion that he will carry the ball 320 times, which is a very optimistic assertion that even he admits.

Exactly THREE backs ran the ball 320 yards last season so I think my point is well taken.

TJ’s carries will be tough to replace, just like a third starter in MLB that eats innings. His stats might not be the best, but he helps the team.

    WOJF,

I’m not trying to jump into this debate, but it is true that Greene never had injury issues before this season. He had a mild ankle injury his one season starting at Iowa, that he obviously played through. The kid is tough, but when you can’t breathe it’s hard to run (and his rib problems left him gasping for air in pain).

I don’t want to get into the debate though, my stance is well known and TJ is gone so I don’t really want to keep bringing him up.
