Prospect Watch: CB Brandon Ghee

by Weeks on March 15th, 2010 at 3:30 pm

As the Jets journey towards the draft in April, we here at TJB will be taking a look into prospects that could be on the Jets draft board. Today we will be taking a look at: Wake Forest product, Brandon Ghee

Projected Round: Late-Second or later.

Measurables: Stands at 5’11. Weighs in at 192 lbs.

Positives: Ghee is a good tackler that likes to deliever the big hits. He has long arms and strong hands that can work to his advantage. He is quick and is also agile. He has decent instincts and can either play in zone or man to man coverage. Ghee can also provide adequate run support. Overall he is a very physical corner with great speed. Ghee can also contribute on Special Teams.

Negatives: He seems unsure of how to use his hands when it comes to making plays on the ball after recording only one INT at Wake Forest. He does need help staying in position on short routes and could also stand to polish his backpedal. His footwork needs some coaching while he needs to learn when to keep his aggressiveness under control. Durability could also be an issue.

The Bottom Line: Ghee does present teams with some good qualities however it seems he really needs to have some time with a DB coach in order to retune parts of his game. He does have the skill but he is very raw and would be a project. I’m sure the Jets will want a corner who can step in right away and Ghee will probably remain far from the Jets radar.

I give “igs” alot of credit…the guy talked up Ghee alot and I have to say the kid is impressive

  2. avatar AKA...Drew says:

igs…..knows his college prospects. I do believe he falls in love with some of them and loses his mind when some disagree…lol but …..

he knows he prospects. He did call the Sanchez trade and pick months before anyone else and then strongly defended it when people (like myself) questioned it.

I think Ghee should not be touched before the 3rd or 4th round but igs (double agent) probably thinks he is a solid 2nd rounder…..

  3. avatar JetsFanInSouthFlorida says:

So watching the BC film, I saw him make a nice strip sack on a corner blitz (blocker didn’t even try to slow him down though), defensed a pair of passes well, got burnt a number of times as well, especially on the last drive of the game which BC scored on to win the game.

Watching the Miami film, Ghee had another corner blitz sack (busted play by Miami), a couple of passes defensed and numerous times that he was beaten by the Cane receivers as well as missed tackles.

Not sure what you guys are seeing, or is your opinion on Ghee based on other films\games you have seen?

  4. avatar someguy says:

I am a sophmore at Wake Forest and after watching Ghee for two years, I am absolutely convinced he would be a better safety than corner. Also, he played second fiddle to Alphonso Smith last year (Drafted 2nd round by the Broncos) and he was a non factor in the NFL.

Personally, I think he can read plays very well and he makes a ton of run stops, but his coverage ability never really impressed me. Hence, he would probably be best as a Safety in a Cover 2 scheme or, if coached correctly, possibly a a sole safety role like Rhodes played last year. Might be worth a look in the 3rd round.

  5. avatar JetsFanInSouthFlorida says:

    Thanks for the insight Someguy,

How is his tackling though, as I was not impressed with what the films showed on him? He missed a number of tackles and seem to shy away from some of the runners on the edge.

  6. avatar Harris52 Fan says:

NO… we can’t take a corner in the first round. We have other needs to address. If we take a corner in the later rounds that’s fine but in the first either go safety or pass rusher. I wanted Brandon Graham all along, as a big Michigan fan I’ve seen him play A LOT and he is a MONSTER. unfortunately having a huge senior bowl, his stock went way up. Now a lot of mock drafts have him going to NE which would suck. We can go in a lot of directions for a safety. I doubt we get Earl Thomas or Eric Berry unless we trade up. However this draft is deep when it comes to safeties. Slot receiver isn’t that big a deal in my opinion but Jordan Shipley would be perfect.

  7. avatar JetsFanInSouthFlorida says:

    Harris,

Nobody here has said anything about taking him #1. Late 2nd and potentially 3rd or later is all I am seeing.

  8. avatar JetsFanInSouthFlorida says:

Hmm, check out this tidbit from FoxSports:

Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com writes that he “wouldn’t be surprised if (Dez) Bryant slips out of the first round entirely.”

Marvez cites a recent ESPN The Magazine report that claimed Bryant was “notoriously unreliable” in college, and that “Getting him to focus on even simple tasks like attending class was a daily struggle.” In addition to FOX and ESPN The Mag, the National Football Post, Cleveland Plain Dealer, and Yahoo have published negative reports about Bryant in the last month.

    ————————————————————————
Now with WR being a need, although not our biggest need, what if Bryant did fall to us at #29? Awfully tempting even with the character issues.

NEW YORK (AP)—The New York Jets and New York Giants both will play at home in their new Meadowlands Stadium on the opening weekend of the 2010 season.

The NFL says the Giants will play on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 12, while the Jets will host a Monday night game the next day.

Opponents have not been announced; the full league schedule usually is released in early April.

The Jets will host the first NFL game at the new stadium during the preseason in August.

Only once have the Giants and Jets opened a regular season on the same weekend at Giants Stadium. In 1991, the Jets played Tampa Bay on Sunday, Sept. 1, and the Giants hosted the 49ers on Monday night, Sept. 2.

  10. avatar Guy says:

ESPN is reporting that the Jets and Giants are playing at the new stadium opening weekend. The Giants play sunday afternoon and we get monday night. I guess not a bad deal

  11. avatar rusty sanchez says:

i rather the monday night game more people are gonna watch from outter state and think of the stadium as ours more than the giants…im pretty sure espn tho will make sure they remind everyone we share it with the giants more than they should

  12. avatar LWsquad says:

List of possible teams to play in that first Monday night game…..I’m soooo excited and happy for the JETS btw.:
    Pats- no brainer.
Ravens- Bloody noses to start the season.
Browns- Browns will be better and Mangini will want to show up big, as well as Braylon.
Vikings- Two teams one win away from the super bowl….and oh yeah Farve played/plays for both.
3 of these will get big ratings. No matter who gets that first Monday nighter against us, I see all of these teams playing in primetime against the New York Friggin’ Jets!
Do you hear that guys? I hear it. It’s the winds of change blowing away all our past dashed hopes and lost opportunities. It all started last year, and this year the Rex promise will come to fruition.
BTW- I have a feeling this year we won’t see nearly as many FinFans or Hatriots blogging here. They have nothing to back up any s-talk anymore.
This is the year people will actually pick us to get to the SB!?!?!? Let’s start proving people right because we will not have the extra fuel of getting to prove them wrong. We will not get to enjoy that underdog role this year, people that know football, know we could have won it all last year and after the moves that have been made (mind you we still need a consistent pass-rush) it will be the JETS to lose.
BENT- How many days till season begins??? We need a ticker to count down the days for us TJB fans. Just a thought. F*&K I can’t wait for next year!

  17. avatar rusty sanchez says:

  18. avatar Bent says:

LWSquad – 182 days. Almost exactly half a year.

Reality – nah, it’s the Big Slinky.

  19. avatar rusty sanchez says:

i bet you giants are pissed over us gettin the 1st monday night i think they were expecting to get both

  20. avatar jkjet64 says:

They should just call it PSL Stadium

  21. avatar jkjet64 says:

    Rusty,

My wife’s a Giants fan and I got to rub it in. Feels great to turn the tides

  22. avatar rusty sanchez says:

i thought they should call it jetblue stadium…heard that a couple times thought it would be a good idea

  23. avatar reality jet fan says:

We must always say jet stadium because we will be the only ones not calling it the new giants stadium

  24. avatar jkjet64 says:

I don’t care what they call it if the Jets win games

  25. avatar rusty sanchez says:

i agree its jet stadium the house that rex built….we aint tennants anymore…co-owners

  26. avatar ron2473000 says:

    bassett,

Can we get a prospect watch for morgan burnett from Georgia Tech 14 ints in 3yrs 6-1 210? Looks like a late second round according to NFL network bucky brooks!!!

  27. avatar rusty sanchez says:

does anyone know how the parking at the new jets stadium gonna be like this year???is the old stadium gonna be fully gone or we got one more year of parking passes???

  28. avatar rusty sanchez says:

i forgot that LT can throw the ball too i think he has quite a few td passes in his career…could get interesting when LT and b. smith are on the field at the same time….cant wait til monday night when most of the country sees our new stadium on primetime and not some bullcrap sunday afternoon game…thanks for whining g-men

  29. avatar PA Jets Fan says:

Did you guys here that both the Jets and Giants are getting games the opening week at the new stadium. Giants are playing sunday afternoon and the Jets have the first Monday night football game of the year. Great idea!!!!

  30. avatar PA Jets Fan says:

whoops sorry guys didnt read your earlier comments. You guys already know, my bad.

    LETS GO JETS!!!!!

  31. avatar levi says:

This will make it the fourth time I ask if T.Rich is onboard this year or not.

    Shocked noone knows.

  32. avatar rusty sanchez says:

    levi
he is still unsigned i know the jets publicly said they want him back im not sure tho about t-rich sorry

  33. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    levi

T-Rich is a UFA and says he plans to play 1 more year. He is not under contract with the Jets but Tanny said both parties were in contact. Tanny also stated that FB James Davis is someone the coaching staff is excited about.

So as of right now I do not think he has signed but I would think he would be back if he wants to play

  34. avatar rusty sanchez says:

i would say in an uncapped year give t-rich whatever he wants and have this guy james davis just stay next to him so he can learn everything t-rich knows be4 he retires

  35. avatar levi says:

Thanks guys I believe he is important . Sign him for as many years as he says he will hit people with noone ever nowing who he is.

I would love to see some stats about his blocking.

  36. avatar AKA...Drew says:

James Davis was picked up from Chicago ( I think they really liked him but we got him off waivers as they tried to sneak him thru) and spent the year on our PS learning from T-Rich.

I really hope T-Rich is back but Tanny was not the first person I heard talk this kid up.

  37. avatar rusty sanchez says:

    aka drew
so this isnt the same james davis from the cleveland browns

  38. avatar levi says:

I assume T.Rich or Lorenzo Neal Must be the best blocking fullbacks ever? They block for probowlers alot.

  39. avatar ramble914 says:

Sounds like he might be a better safety.

Eddie dont you think that they paid LT instead of TJ because LT the bigger name?

    Two things
1- I think the Jets were going to pay TJ a set certain amount that they decided upon…TJ wasnt having it, and I cant blame him, he had a beast year. The sad part is, at that age, the only way he could still be effective is if he was a backup with a light workload…so they both had to move on

2- Now when the Jets knew TJ was gone for good, they looked for the same type of guy to replace him. A big name, marquee guy who has a season or two left…hence LT. So yes, the LT2 name definitely had something to do with it.

Another thing I ve been thinking. The Jets must sweat thier o line internally. I think they honestly believe they can plug in any RB behind that line and they will have success. Especially now that they put in the zone blocking schemes

LT being a big name definitely played a factor, but I also think the fact the LT does not fumble, can catch the ball as a RB, and is a different type of runner than Greene is. TJ and Greene were very similar, and while LT isnt the guy he was 5 years ago, he still has shifty hips and doesnt seem to lose yards

Like I said before, the Jets were 30 mins from a Super Bowl berth while TJ was playing his worst ball of the year. As much as I loved the guy, Greene is the guy now. He is just better. All Greene needs is a guy to spell him, and the Jets and TJ couldnt make it happen. LT isnt LT anymore, but Im comfortable in the fact that he is still going to make smart cuts, fall foward and not cough the ball up

  41. avatar Bent says:

    Rusty / Drew – it’s JASON Davis.

  42. avatar AKA...Drew says:

lol….. oh yea. my bad Jason Davis. He looks more like a James to me though
