Jets Sign DL Rodrique Wright

by Bassett on March 16th, 2010 at 12:09 pm

According to Scout.com, the Jets have signed DL Rodrique Wright.

New York Jets
Monday: Signed DE Rodrique Wright.
Comments: Wright was out of the NFL last season.

Wright (25) was out of football last season, but is the perfect size for a 3-4 DE at 6-5 300 lbs. Wright started nine games for the Dolphins in 2007, a terrible year for that team, so it’s hard to say just how good he could be … not that good I imagine if he was out of football for a year at 25.

Still, the Jets need depth badly at the defensive line, so might see him as a potential project. In all honesty, this doesn’t change the team’s needs as they head to the draft, which include DL.

Nothing wrong with backfilling a position where we need some depth on the cheap. No risk. And with Rex’s ability to mold his projects, why not?

  2. avatar Bent says:

Maybe just camp fodder. At one stage he was a potential first round pick!

  3. avatar droseatwork says:

The first test for our new DL coach. Come on Carrier!

  4. avatar JetsFanInSouthFlorida says:

He was an All-American at Texas and a Lombardi finalist. Tore his rotator cuff prior to the draft and fell to the seventh round. Could be interesting if the Jets get him back to his original form.

    Good point C Low

Not to mention, Rex did a helluva job with DeVito. DeVito played some great ball down the stretch with Jenks being down.

Marques Douglas comes to mind…low draft pick to rookie FA signing that becomes a solid player on a winning and good defense

Wright obviously has talent. He did not shine in miami. It happens. it could have been many things. Now he is with the best defensive mind in football in D-Rex. If anyone can revive Wright’s career, Rex can. I love the fact that we are signing players in a year when we were supposed to be handcuffed by the rules. Mr.T and D-Rex are finding ways to circumvent the rules. I will never sell our FO short as long as T and rex are running it.

Welcome to the Jets – Rod Wright – and go get ‘em! Knock the snot out of ‘em.

JFiSF – dude that is pretty crazy. If anyone can get someone back to form on D it’s Rex. I think we will see some good snaps outta this kid.

  8. avatar reality jet fan says:

Eddie , dont you we are jumping the gun with everything rex can do. Imean its only 1 year and it was great year. And he got nothing out of gholston and couldnt get rhodes going.

  9. avatar Brendan says:

He also made Pouha & Devito into legitimate starting defensive lineman and overcame the injury to his All-Pro NT. He had Harris putting together his best & most complete year. He brought Revis to another level (that defensive backs wizard Mangini couldn’t do). He also motivated the fans (something that practically no one can do). So he couldn’t get an ultra-raw project player and a finesse safety to fit into his plan. WHAT THE **** REX!?

  10. avatar reality jet fan says:

I am the first to admit i thought we had the next BB after manginis 1st year. I was obviously wrong. I feel like alot jet fans got rex in canton already.

  11. avatar reality jet fan says:

Brendan just curious what were you writing after manginis 1st year?

  12. avatar RDubbs says:

I love signing form Fins on the cheap. If they get cut then no harm in having tried. On the other hand, if they produce, it not only helps the Jets, but of almost equal importance, it really pisses of Fish fans. Tee-Hee.

  13. Good move. Might get lucky and have a keeper cheap, if not, nothing lost.

  14. avatar Brendan says:

    RJF,

The only time I have felt this positive about a first year coach was Parcells’ first year here.

Groh, Mangini, and Edwards all had winning records their first year (Mangini and Edwards had better first year records than Rex) but I never felt confident in them. It’s not bandwagon hopping, it’s reality. Rex is the best fit for this city, this team, it’s fans, and their inferiority complex since Parcells.

  15. avatar reality jet fan says:

Wow u had no confidence in mangini?

  16. avatar reality jet fan says:

Ithink he is thre right fit also

  17. avatar Brendan says:

I never liked Mangini. I never felt his personality would mesh with the fans & media of NY and I thought the Jets were too eager to get a Belichick disciple so they jumped the gun on a guy who wasn’t ready to be a head coach.

  18. avatar reality jet fan says:

    got ya

  19. avatar reality jet fan says:

After mangini i dont like to get of myself with a one year HC. As we have seen anyone can do it for 1 year.

  20. avatar Brendan says:

I agree. If anything, the past decade+ has shown Jets fans that they shouldn’t get too high on people after a single year. I just feel that this team already had a solid foundation when Rex got here. He’s done some tweaking to the roster and is certainly going after his type of players (as all coaches do). The fact that the players play so hard for him is what I find the most confidence inspiring. Mangini never connected with his guys. Neither did Groh. Edwards was a player’s coach, but he isn’t like Rex in the sense players wouldn’t “run through a brick wall” for him. Rex connects with these guys on professional and personal levels and they mostly seem like they truly enjoy playing for Rex. It’s just a different connection with the team, if I had to put my finger on it.

Rex has been doing this since he took over as Ravens Defensive Coordinator…for almost a decade. Guy has never had defense ranked lower than 5th in the league

There isnt a better defensive football coach on the planet and I have the utmost confidence in his abilities. Im talking about him as DEFENSIVE coach, not a HC. But when we pick up a guy on the defensive side, Rex gets brought up because its HIS defense

One, Gholston has done nothing but Rex didnt pick that guy- but Gholston was better under Rex than Mangini.

Rhodes whined and got Lifetime original movie on the Jets. That became clear after ” the ex Ravens got all the attention” comment. Kerry cant do the things needed to play in Rex’s D. He hasnt been Kerry Rhodes since 06 and the Jets dont need him. He wanted to be babied and given special privileges before he proved he could play at a high level in Rex’s D. That is what happens when a new head coach comes over, he kicks the old coachs guys butt out the door

Forgot to add, my point is, as long as Rex is here we will have a top flight elite NFL defense. Which means we will pretty much be in every game and have a chance to win as long as the offense doesnt turn the ball over 5 times

Thats the difference between Rex and Mangini, Rex, like Belichick, can scheme up a defense and effect the game from the sideline, Mangini simply cannot

  23. avatar BigKatt wants a ring says:

Eddie – you’re absolutely right when you say that Rex is an elite Defensive mind, and i think because of that reason great Offensive Coordinators will aleays be willing to come to New York. If OC’s know that all our team has to do is score 20 points and we’re almost guaranteed a win, who wouldn’t want to come to NY to work with Rex?

  24. avatar "The Real" RJF says:

You guys have got to check out this dudes youtube highlights.! He was pretty damn good. He started out as #61, then switched to #90. He’s quick and and stout. Its hard to get a read on DT’s in college, b/c you have some that play @ a very high level against engineers and rocket scientist. But to sign this kid for a bag of grapes is not bad.

Agree w/ most not to over react on 1yr wonders, but this guy has “it”. Everybody jumped on the Mangenius bandwagon when we went 10-6, and so did I, but watching him the 2nd yr and his stubborness to make obvious in-game adjustments, led to his demise. It wasnt his persona or even the way he game planned, it was his lack of attention to detail that he so glorious preached about. If you see it aint workin’ and for 30 minutes it didnt work, then common sense states its not gonna change for the next 30 minutes either.

  25. avatar Joe who? says:

Thank you Kentucky Jet. The right name for our management team is in your posting — “T – Rex”. The team is doing a great job. I love their aggressive management style. Hey no one is prescient, but this management team is aggressively seeking quality, hard working players. Looks great for 2010 and beyond … Go Jets!

  26. avatar JetOrange says:

Looking under every rock, thanks Tanny

  27. avatar Jetfan in Miami says:

Hey is Dewayne Robertson still playing with his bone on bone knees? lol

  28. avatar Jack says:

Here’s a fun fact. The last NFL game Wright played in was the Dolphins 2008 first round playoff game against…. wait for it….the Ravens.

  29. avatar Brendan says:

    JFiM,

Robertson was out of the league last year.

  30. avatar Jetfan in Miami says:

i thought so…glad we got something for him! (thanks denver)

  31. avatar LWsquad says:

Mangini’s first year….Team effort (Cotchery, Coles, Penny, Baker, LW) got us quite a few squeaker wins….get BLOWN out by JAX……soft schedule to close out the year…embarrassed by NE in the WC….. The rest is history.

  32. avatar LWsquad says:

Oh and great pick up with Wright. At 25, with one year on the couch, if this kid does ANYTHING, it will be viewed as another genius move by FO!

  33. avatar James in TN says:

Going out on a limb, BUT I say he is already better than the BUST. VG is a joke.

  34. avatar charlie says:

Why dont we just put VG on the line. i dont think he is smart enough to make reads as a LB. He was a DL in college Lets make him a DL in the NFL.

  35. avatar jrwr7 says:

    Hey Y’all,

JayM, thanks for the link. This guy looks like a beast on tape. If he can do some of that for us we might have something.
