Link: Clowney in Haiti with Vernon and Digs

by Bassett on March 16th, 2010 at 1:50 pm

David Clowney writes that he, James Ihedigbo and Vernon Gholston are heading to Haiti to help out for a few days before the start of workouts.

Today, me, Vernon Gholston, and James Ihedigbo are going to Haiti to help with the mission relief. My foundation, the David Clowney Foundation, has had people from all over the country send and donate clothes for me to take to Haiti and give to the people who need them.

I am super excited about this trip and can’t wait to get out there to help out. Especially being that I have so many friends that are in South Florida who are from Haiti. We will be out there visiting orphanages, passing out clothes, toys and water. Teaching the youth how to play American football and just trying to make a little bit of a difference.

Glad to hear they’re helping out, that’s a great thing. You can follow The Clown while he’s in Haiti on www.twitter.com/davidclowney.

I love Clowney, i hope he gets a shot at filling in that #3 receiver slot. He’s the fastest guy on our team and he’s been tweeting on how he’s trying to improve more this offseason. I would love to see him get his chance. I use him as our 3rd receiver in Madden, and he’s a great fit! :)

makes me proud to root for these guys.

  3. avatar MLB Matt says:

    Finally! Golston contributes!!!

  4. avatar Brendan says:

    Same here, freddy.

  5. avatar Bent says:

Me too. Even though these three might not make (m)any headlines next year, this is inspirational stuff.

  6. avatar J Roc says:

Gholston should donate his entire contract to the Haitian relief fund.

  7. avatar Brendan says:

Hey! It only took 5 comments for the class to come out of the thread!

  8. avatar BigKatt wants a ring says:

Ha i agree with J Roc. Vernon Gholston has more $$$ than all of us for literally no reason.

  9. avatar Frank Cip says:

This is a good thing for sure, proud of them.. .except I really hope none of these kids listen to Vernon on how to play football

  10. avatar BENTover says:

hey, maybe after clown and digs teach the Haitian kids how to play they can try and pass that info over to Gholston

  11. avatar BamBam says:

Good for them! It would be nice to know if we could contribute some $$$ to build a school or something like that.

Remember boys, just like in year one of training camp, the sights and scenery will be overwhelming but you have to stick your head in there and get involved to make a difference. Be a volunteer not a voyeur

  12. avatar Bent says:

While there are some amusing one liners here, I hate the fact that Jets fans have to criticize Gholston at every turn.

Yes, it was a bad pick, but that’s not his fault. By all accounts he is working hard to improve so that he can contribute, which is all you can ask. While he isn’t meeting incentives, his contract is about the same size as a Kenyon Coleman or Bryan Thomas – hardly a cap killer and it’s not like he cost the Jets any games with costly errors.

Yes, it’s frustrating that he hasn’t produced. I just think it isn’t productive to pile on constantly.

  13. avatar Jets22 says:

Good Job Fellas, and as for Gholston he may be a bust but at least thats all we can say about the kid, at least he hasn’t shot himself in a nightclub as of yet.

  14. avatar BigKatt wants a ring says:

Bent – I’m critical that he hasn’t produced yet, as is almost everyone else, but if you have seen some of my former posts, you’d know i think that he is going to have a big year for us. Rex is giving him a second chance, and i don’t think he’ll blow it. I think we’ll really know what the FO and Rex think of him come draft day. If we don’t go DL/OLB first round, i think that means Vernie is going to be expected to contribute this season, which i believe he can. If we do pick someone who can play VG’s position, i think it’s sayonara Vernon.

  15. avatar Bent says:

I think they view him as a project lineman right now. Can’t see them not drafting someone because of any confidence they may have in him. I felt they were guarded in making any positive predictions for this year.

Good for him (and the others) for doing this though!

  16. avatar MLB Matt says:

I’m confused as to why we never used Golston as an end more.

And Bent, it was just a zinger. I’m not on here all too often posting so forgive me for following the people that do bash him. It’s just very tough though. If he was anything then our team could be near unstoppable.

With that said, I hope he turns it around. I’m definitely pulling for him.

  17. avatar AKA...Drew says:

C’mon Bent. I understand what youre saying but Gholston has been a disaster since he was drafted. The FO, coaches and fans have given him every excuse to why he hasnt been the least bit productive.

He has become the but of jokes around the league let alone to this fanbse.

True his contract has not hurt us but 2 years after he was drafted our biggest need it um….passrush. I really hope things turn around for him and for us fans but I just dont see it happening…hopefully I’m wrong.

I am very happy to see that these guys are over there helping and being great citizens…… very well representing the Jets

  18. avatar Brendan says:

    Drew,

I see what you’re saying, but it’s childish. The kid is busting his rear trying to get better, whether people want to admit it or not, and is an overall good person. Now I’m not saying that he should go unscathed, but on a thread like this? While the rest of us are sitting on computers and criticizing the kid, he’s putting his money and efforts towards doing good.

So we’re clear, I’m not point the finger at you, I just don’t think this is the place to throw one liners. They’re doing something that is selfless and good and people still can’t even give him credit for that. Just sad.

  19. avatar brightfuture says:

Does Bent know BENTover are they related or something??

  20. avatar matthewm says:

Agree with Bent on Ghoston. Keep in mind, he changed positions and he’s still very young. Speaks well that he’s doing this. Be great if he blossoms. Like a free pick at this point. Troubled that he’s not better at special teams, but maybe he contributes in ways lost to me.

  21. avatar NamVetJet says:

Positive stuff they are doing in Haiti and I hope Gholston makes improvement this year and lives up to his expectations. He is going to be with us for another year we might as well root for the guy.

  22. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    Brendan and Bent

Just to be clear…. I agree. I did not make the funny one liners but I just feel this is the way some fans get their frustration out with Gholston. I know anytime I hear his name I roll my eyes and just get annoyed what could be if he wasnt a terrible player.

but as i stated earlier the kid is a great person and I am happy he is representing the Jets this way….

  23. avatar James in TN says:

Gholston is a joke at football, but I commend him for trying to help the Haitians. The sad part is that I believe we took him because our FO was afraid the Pats would get him. If so , that has to be the most bone headed move ever.

  24. avatar junior says:

I heard when Gholston becomes the wwe champ he is going to get Vince McMahon to get monday night Raw there

  25. avatar GANGGREEN says:

Bent, Everyone ripped on Sanchez for posing in a magazine but we cant rip on Gholston for not doing his job???This kid gets paid millions of dollars to play football at a high level right? The only reason i feel Gholston is still around is because we can’t unload him for the money we got invested in him…Shoot he cant even get of blocks and rush the pasher and ya dont have to be a rocket scientist to do that…The best move Gholston can make is to get into professional body building and get the hell outta football…

  26. avatar junior says:

because we know he wont become a football player

  27. avatar junior says:

Gholston= wwe heavyweight champ of the world 2013

  28. avatar GANGGREEN says:

Also to add to that how many high first round draft picks are viewed as projects???? Not many. first rounders are supposed to be immediate impact players and I know there is a learning curve from college to Pro but come on already we should be getting some solid play and numbers outta Gholston by now…Yes i was excited and cheered when we drafted him and in the same token I say I am very disappointed…

  29. avatar junior says:

he is a bum he doesnt have a single sack i mean come on you cant get a single sack by accident i mean what a joke

  30. avatar Bent says:

You can do whatever you like – I just made an observation that I didn’t see it as particularly helpful.

He was better in 2009 than 2008. Maybe he’ll keep improving. If he doesn’t, at least he did a good thing for the people of Haiti.

  31. avatar LWsquad says:

Good job by the Clown, Digs and VG.
BTW anyone heard more on Rex getting an MMA fighter to train with VG??

  32. avatar LWsquad says:

Makes sense. The kid has the tangibles, he just needs a powerful move.

  33. avatar LTLTLTLTLTLTLTLTLTLLTLTLT says:

    lets hope vern stays there
