Eric Smith signs Tender

by Weeks on March 18th, 2010 at 6:48 pm

According to Hutch, Eric Smith has decided to sign his tender.

Meanwhile, Jets S Eric Smith signed his one-year, $1.176 million tender offer. He’s expected to challenge for the starting job next season with the departure of Kerry Rhodes.

While I don’t believe Smith can truly ever be a starter, he provides good depth and in a year in which the Jets moves are limited, it is good to see Smith return to the team for at least another season (provided there are no bidders for the fourth year safety).

    Good business.

  2. avatar BigKatt wants a ring says:

    Meh.

  3. avatar Harvlis says:

I think that, unless the Jets make a move for another Free Safety, Smith will be our starter. I think Pool will be a back-up, if he makes the team. Ihedigbo is an up and down player. He can make a game changing play or take a penalty at the most inopportune time. Odds are, the Jets will take a Safety, somewhere in the draft.

  4. avatar Clint says:

I would really like for us to find some way which won’t happen to get Eric Berry. Myron Rolle would be nice.

  5. avatar Revis Christ says:

the jags might be trading down from the 10 spot … and i belevie tanny would jump all over that to get berry

  6. avatar joe c from ct says:

he is a punisher with our dbs he will have plenty of chances to MAKE THEM PAY FOR BEING ON OUR SCHEDULE!!

  7. avatar Clint says:

That would be a tough reach though for Berry to make it to 10.

  8. avatar joe c from ct says:

    its HAMMERTIME!!!

  9. avatar Marvel says:

I blame whoever did the Reshad Jones thread for me wanting the Jets to draft him .. I will honestly be upset if we don’t get Mays or Jones . I like Smith he plays hard but from what I saw he couldn’t cover a twin size bed with a king size sheet ..

  10. avatar ramble914 says:

I would love to get R. Jones with our 2nd round pick.

  11. avatar sunsetmusic says:

    Marvel…..LMAO!!!

I actually like E. Smith….think he’s a good player to have on team and ST… Smart guy, slowly getting better…will probably end up at worst a very solid backup…if not decent starter. I like his game in certain situations. Good re-sign.

  12. avatar dakar says:

i honestly think whoever is back there should do good because of cro and revis tandem…just my thoughts…

  13. avatar dakar says:

plus if we get our pass rusher from the draft and jenkins is back…this defense should be even better then last years all around…

  14. avatar Organized Chaos says:

Problem with trading to the tenth spot is that A) There’s a (B)erry big chance that Eric Berry is of the board by then B) Making another trade up would limit our draft picks yet again, and I think the NYJ need an injection of youth on the D and O Lines C) It won’t be a cheap contract. With Revis, Mangold and Dbrick all expiring and the salary cap presumably coming back – take care our of own guys before we take on another big contract.

  15. avatar JetMetVet says:

I’m guessing Smith probably sits down next to Leonard and picks his brain.. Good re-sign for chemistry sake.

  16. avatar War Machine says:

Um I thought the rookie cap is different then the regular cap. So why would it matter if we trade up? And ok I Like Smith but does this mean no RESHAD JONES? If not whats up?

  17. avatar dakar says:

every1 knows this is a very deep draft…so why trade up when staying put would be the best idea for the team…but if we are gonna trade i would rather us trading down to get more picks…besides…safety isnt our main concern…getting a PASS RUSHER is…just my thoughts…

  18. avatar Mike24 says:

Doesnt anyone find it to be huge coincidence that this year is the first year that the draft will be televised for three days rather than two days and this year just happens to be such a DEEP draft full of players???
Point is you never know what your gunna get year in and year out. Tanny and his guys have a good thing goin… If they trade up for a lil quality over quanity i’m all for it. We are just a few impact players away from bein a complete MONSTER in the NFL…
Not sayin we gotta trade up but i’m cool with what these guys decide at this point.

  19. avatar JetsFanInSouthFlorida says:

Odrick or Graham in Round 1
    Shipley in Round 2

    Enuf said.

  20. avatar ramble914 says:

    JFISF,

I also wouldn’t mind Rashad Jones in the second round.

  21. avatar mike says:

a lil off topic but eagles released wr kevin curtis hes only 31 and did very well before his injury’s. it would be a low risk high reward move

  22. avatar Bent says:

War machine – no, the rookie cap is included within the salary cap and only applies in the first year anyway, so year two, when the cap numbers begin to escalate, does need to be accounted for in future cap projections.

  23. avatar Marvel says:

    Mike24

it’s 3 days because ESPN is money hungry & knows us football fans will watch 2 , 3 , or 4 days of the draft .. It’s all about the $$$$$$$$ ..

  24. avatar mike s. says:

The one-year deals for Pool and Smith, suggest this team will draft a kid.
S Chad Jones in the might be a smart play. Not sure how far he will fall, but if he is there in the 4th for the Jets, it might be the move.

  25. avatar joethejet says:

ES is a decent player, definately not starter material, but a decent backup,he plays hard, team guy but cant cover crap,it is what it is.

  26. avatar Marvel says:

That’s also why Tebow will be there day 1 even tho there’s only 1 team who might draft him (jags) & that’s a looooong shot at best .. If you see the Jags trade down from 10 then you know who they are gonna pick ..

  27. avatar dakar says:

    mike s

c.jones will never fall that far…we’ll be lucky if he falls to us in the 2nd…

  28. avatar junior says:

kevin curtis i think would make a very good slot wr he was never more then a very solid 3 and thats what he would do for us.

I think Berry will be gone before 10 so trading with the jags wont happen BUTTT i think if you can move up somewhere to get Taylor Mays or Earl Thomas then you make a move..

  29. avatar Mike24 says:

    Marvel-

thats exactly what i’m sayin…. So lets not all get to stuck on owning a ton of picks for this “deep” draft. We see a guy we need to make a move for than lets do it.

  30. avatar dakar says:

i dont understand why you guys are fixated on the safety spot when we have a bigger need at getting a PASS RUSHER…

i believe that any safety rex decides to draft after 2nd or 3rd round will be a good pick up for the jets…we dont need to trade away picks just to get a household name at safety…if we trade up it has to be for the best PASS RUSHER…not safety…just my thoughts…

  31. avatar dakar says:

but then again…rex is 1 of the best at getting pass rushers late in the draft…A.THOMAS and T.SUGGS were both late round picks…im gonna go back to what i said a while ago…im good with whatever rexy and tanny decide to do…just my thoughts…

  32. avatar Marvel says:

    dakar

I’ll be honest the pass rushers pepople like I’m not that impressed with. ( Grahm , Hughs ,) & Odrick is more of a run stopper .. So I’m more concerned with making this secondary the best ever , do that means another big time safety & another big time corner ..

I think I’d trade down & get a combo of Cody/R.Jones/Shipley .. Or just pick up Kevin Curtis , which would make Shipley the odd man out ..

  33. avatar Marvel says:

I am a fan of Odrick tho … But he’s starting to remind me of a guy we already have .. Pauo (spell check)

  34. avatar Monster#57 says:

    Dakar

Terrell Suggs was the 10th overall pick in 2003, but your point is very good. There are many candidates for Rush OLB who will be available in the 2nd round. Guys like Greg Hardy, Jason Worilds, George Selvie. Plus its a given other teams will be drafting Cbs, Safeties, Olinemen and Dlinemen, Wr, Tes and HB, Qb and not just DE/OLBS. So we could even see guys like Benny Sapp or Everson Griffen drop into the second round.

  35. avatar dakar says:

    monster

    then i misread about suggs…

  36. avatar dakar says:

i lost my site on draft prospects…it had everything on whos who coming out into the draft…cant find since my pc crashed…i thought i had it saved in my thumb drive but i didnt…can some1 please send me over a site…that has all players coming out…

    http://walterfootball.com/draft2008P.php
This is an excellent site that listed almost every player at their most likely position. It also gives quite a bite of insight into each player.

The odd thing about Rex’s time with the Ravens is that while he was incharge of the D, all of the starters that were drafted were first rounders (except Landry). What made helped make his D so dangerious is how good Newsome was at drafting quality backups in later rounds that gave the starters breathers and played in different packages

  38. avatar dakar says:

    thanks monster

  39. avatar Dmazz says:

I agree about getting the most out of this draft.the jets can use more youth on def and on the oline.

  40. avatar dakar says:

    Jason Worilds, Virginia Tech
    Height: 6-1. Weight: 254.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.70.
    Combine 40 Time: 4.61.
    Pro Day 40 Time: 4.47.
    Benchx225: 24. Vertical: 38.
    Projected Round (2010): 2-3.

if this guy really ran a 4.47 at his proday…i think he deserves some serious scouting by the jets for our OLB…just my thoughts…

  41. avatar Monster#57 says:

Jason worilds had the fastest 10 yard spilt time, up there with Jerry Hughes. This test measures how fast one is off the snap. There is definitely some serious depth at some positions in this draft. While positions like NT (true 3 – 4 NT) are not as deep, if we were to move up aquiring a guy like Dan Williams and play him at DE next to Jenkins and Ellis (the way Ngata is used in Baltimore) would be a huge benefit for our team

  42. avatar rusty sanchez says:

i like r jones alot too but i think we would have to move up in the 2nd round like what we did for harris clemens in order to get him….as for e smith i feel like hes been improving every year wevee had him so if that keeps up he should have a pretty good year and a possible bargaining chip next offseason

  43. avatar BigKatt wants a ring says:

No receiver in round two, you can find a decent slot wr in the 4th or 5th.

    Round 1: Jerry Hughes
    Round 2: Rashad Jones
    Round 4: WR or CB
    Round 5: OL
    Round 6: Best Player Available
    Round 7: Best Player Available

    That would satisfy me.
    (That’s what she said)

  45. avatar John Z says:

    Bent,
As far as cap considerations go, there is no future, only now. If they play out this season without a labor agreement, look for an NHL type trainwreck to ensue. There is no hope of movement on either side. The owners are trying to make everyone believe they’re losing money and the players won’t go back to being slaves. The lockout will drag on for a long time.

Why is Jerry Porter not making a trip to talk to Rex, he is supposed to be in DC right now…………… I say we sign coles for the minimum!

  55. avatar Jason says:

Id expect most of the Jets to sign their tenders this week since I believe the offseason workouts begin on Monday or Tuesday. If they do not sign they will not get paid the workout bonuses or be allowed to attend. While it isnt a ton of money it is something and gives them the best chance to show their dedication to the team. For a guy like Smith its a big deal. The only two that would be iffy are Leon and Braylon. I think Leon is a definite no. Edwards is probably 50/50.

  56. avatar BENTover says:

During Rexies surgery he was dreaming and the words “Tender E Smith” were muttered. The Jets doc thought that was te thumbs up to resign a decent safety, but really Sexy Rexy was just dreaming about the team shower after game 11. Rexy was very shocked to hear E Smith was tendered when he came to.

  57. avatar mkj13 says:

I say hold out on the pass rusher for one more year and platoon b thomas/gholston and draft odrick or mays if available if not trade down and make sure they grab at least ciron black in the second

  58. avatar mkj13 says:

And then they draft best player available wit rest of the picks

  59. avatar Tos9987 says:

I also agree there is going to be no competition for Smith and Berry

I am not saying its the best idea , but I have a strong feeling that they do what ever it takes to get Berry . They would need to get into the top 5 for him I think .

Just think of all the comparisons to Ed reed. You dont think that Rex isen’t lickin his chops to get a hand on this guy

  60. avatar Tos9987 says:

    Although I like this too

Odrick or Graham in Round 1

  61. avatar CWPOST1993 says:

Odrick 1st round is a must
    R. Jones 2nd Round
    DL
    RB
    OL
    DL

I agree with Jeff … I would sign Coles to min deal. He’s tough inside and solid hands. Imagine Cocherty, Edwards, Coles, Keller and LT/Leon in the backfield

  62. avatar Gregory Rasputin says:

Why do folks write about other players when the article is about Eric Smith?

If Eric Smith works on quickening his intellect through things like lightning chess and video games requiring quick recognition of pattern… he can become a very effective starter.

He has that intangible that makes someone good… his will

  63. avatar Brendan says:

    Greg,

As is the nature of this site, threads rarely stay on topic. And it’s rare that we’d only speak on one topic when lots of the posts on this page are intertwined.

  64. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    greg

To add to Brendan’s post….there is just so much you can say about Eric Smith signing his tender.

BTW. I think Oldrick will go ealrier than #29 and in my opinon is not a need for this team. I have stated this a few times but Rex’s system does not need a “bigtime” DE. His system revolves around an edge rusher, ILB and CB’s.

Except for the freak of nature Ngata that plays DE/DT almost everyone of his DE’s at Baltimore were late round picks or UDFA.

  65. avatar JetsFanInSouthFlorida says:

    AKA,

I respect your opinion, but I wonder how you can say that Odrick (or any top 3-4 DE) is not a need for this team. At this point, we are extremely thin at DL, especially on the ends. We have Big Jenks coming off a major injury, Ellis hasn’t been healthy for a full season in quite some time, and Douglas is out looking for offers. Except for some decent backups in DeVito and Pouha, the cupboard is pretty bare. In the first round, you look to draft a starter and right now the only position that we lack a true starter at is on the DLine.

The reason I favor Odrick is that he would start immediately on the opposite end from Ellis and he can even rotate inside with the size he has. While bigtime DE has never been a huge need in Rex’s system, the lack of a good DE definitely hurts. Rex’s defense is based on complicated blitzes and a strong outside pass rush (see Boulware\Suggs). Since we didn’t have a strong outside pass rush last year, even when Pace came back, we were forced to bring multiple blitzers on a majority of occassions. After seeing this, a number of teams were able to adjust their schemes at half time and keep pressure off of the QB. Prime examples were the Fins game, where a rookie QB starting his first game, made our D look like a bunch of chumps, and the Colts game where Manning had all day to throw in the 2nd half.

Since we don’t have a strong outside rush, it is imperative that our DL can provide pressure and at the very least, eat up blocks to let the other guys have space to make the plays.

  66. avatar Reprocity says:

We lost 1 starting safety, and will prob lose 1 starting DE. If we don’t replace that DE our Run D will suffer. If we don’t stop the run we will be back in the basement real quick!

  67. avatar AKA...Drew says:

I am not saying we dont need a DE….I am saying we dont need a 1st round DE. Oldrick is over-valued becuase of the popular 3-4 defense that he would fit into.

  68. avatar Brendan says:

    JFiSF,

The truth is, the Jets are not thin at DL.

Jenks, before his knee injury, was playing some of the best football of his career. He tore his ACL, yes, but when he tore his other ACL earlier in his career he was an All-Pro the next season. In his own words he’s a “physical freak who heals faster than normal people”. Ellis made the Pro Bowl last year. He is one of the most consistent players in the NFL and his injuries never keep him from playing. He gets 4-3 DE stats from the 3-4 spot, something that not many players can claim.

From there, the Jets have Devito and Pouha, who are not just mere backups, but both could be starters on d-line’s across the NFL. They both have a high motor and once Rex god his hands on them it was only a matter of time before they fulfilled their potential. Devito collapses the pocket and makes the grunt plays that don’t earn him much recognition, and Pouha has become a legitimate NT and can play multiple 3-4 DL spots.

Then you have the two project players. Pitoitua and Gholston. I think everyone agrees Gholston’s experiment as a OLB rusher is over, but he showed real promise as a 3-4 DE. He can collapse the pocket and doesn’t get moved around very much, and he will have a reasonable salary if he doesn’t play that much. Pitoitua is like Frankenstein in the sense if he gets his hands on you, you’re done. He’s gigantic (6’8) and has the potential to be one of the best 3-4 DEs in football if he keeps improving.

Also to keep in mind, Marques Douglas and Howard Green could both be resigned. Also, Rex rarely dresses more than 5 DL for a game, so the Jets don’t really need that much more depth there.

  69. avatar JetsFanInSouthFlorida says:

BTW, I agree with the earlier poster on WalterFootball being an excellent site for draft information. Here are there Jets picks for rounds 1-4.

    1. Golden Tate – WR – Notre Dame
    2. Reshad Jones – S – Georgia
    4. Arthur Jones – DE\DT – Syracuse

I know the Tate and Jones selections would be big hits on this site. Jones is the 11th ranked 3-4 DE on their board and is coming off a torn pectoral muscle and knee surgery. He has first round potential according to all of the sites I have looked at, but the major injury question marks have him sliding to the 4th.

  70. avatar Bent says:

I agree with gregory rasputin, Eric Smith would be a good starter if he played more chess.

    Wait…what?

  71. avatar BigKatt wants a ring says:

hahaha Bent i thought the same thing.

  72. avatar AKA...Drew says:

I would be “stunned” if we took Oldrick (let alone if he was there @29) Just look at Rex’s history in Balitmore. He wants LB’s and CB’s

I would take Dan Williams over him anyway if we did want a DL. Where he can play DT or DE

As Brendan mentioned we do not dress alot of DL as there roles for the most part is minimal in what Rex’s system calls for…..unless you have an unbelievable talent ( which you wont @29) we probably wont take one.

  73. avatar AKA...Drew says:

I was hoping Greg was kidding……lol

  74. avatar JetsFanInSouthFlorida says:

    Brendan,

The key with Jenks injury is that the first one he had was much earlier in his career and as he gets older (as is the case with all human beings) his healing will not progress as fast. His return to form is definitely a question mark. Ellis has also been a physical freak over the years, but notice that although he plays hurt, the injuries are starting to pile up. Even if both of them have injury free seasons, that is onlu two true starters. I disagree with your optimism about DeVito and Pouha. They are backups and would be backups on most teams in the NFL. They are quality backups and I am happy they are on our team, as you do need to have a healthy rotation of DL’s to stay at a dominating level like the Jets D needs to be. As you pointed out, both Green and Douglas can be resigned, but the opposite is true also, they can both sign somewhere else as well.

Not sure what you saw in Gholston as a 3-4 DE and Pitoitua had 3 tackles last year, so I am not sure where the huge potential is that you discussed. Let’s see him hit double digits tackles before we crown him. So, if the Jets dress 5 DL per game, that would currently mean Ellis, Jenks, DeVito, Pouha, and Gholston? Pitoitua and now Rodrique Wright as the only other options currently on the roster means we are verrrrrrryyyyyy thin especially with players coming off injury.

  75. avatar Bent says:

Just to add to Jason’s comment, about Leon perhaps not signing his tender and Braylon being 50-50:

If Leon doesn’t sign by June 15, I believe they can reduce his salary for the year to 110% of last year’s salary (ie from $1.8m to $600k). Obviously it makes no sense for him to allow this to happen, but remember who his agent is.

This rule does not affect Braylon, whose tender is based on 110% of salary already, but Tannenbaum did outline how important it would be for him to sign and attend.

One other possibility is that either could have their tender rescinded and become a UFA, which could feasibly happen if someone like Sharper was available.

Last but not least you have a trade, of course.

I’m hoping they both sign, but some RFAs will holdout all offseason and it won’t cost them much (if anything).

  76. avatar JetsFanInSouthFlorida says:

    AKA,

Dan Williams would be my pick also, but he is looking like a top half pick in the first round. There is a lot of talk down here in Dolphinland about the Fins taking him at 12. WalterFootball has him going #11 to the Broncos.

If Odrick is there, I think he is the pick as I stated above. If not then I would look at best available between the safeties, WRs (Dez Bryant??), and OLBs (talk is that Kindle is dropping).

  77. avatar Bent says:

I happen to agree with Brendan about the DL depth, even the part about Potty and VG’s potential.

If they don’t bring back Green and/or Douglas, I can see them adding some depth, but it probably won’t be an immediate contributor. One of the developmental prospects like Kroul of Steinkuhler might emerge in camp too, who knows?

  78. avatar Brendan says:

    JFiSF,

What you just described is not thin at all. If you dress 5 and have 2 extras to have on the practice squad that is 7 DL for a 3-4, most of which are versatile players and can play multiple positions.

I’ll go into further detail if you’d like on Gholston & Potty (Pitoitua). Gholston is so strong that even behemoth OT’s can’t drive him out of the hole. 3-4 DE’s just occupy gaps, which he can do because he’s strong enough to squat in a hole and keep the RB from getting a crease. He can bullrush and drive blockers backwards towards the QBs on passing plays. He even showed last season he isn’t lost in coverage anymore. If he bulks up to about 290 and learns a few rip/swim pass rushing moves he can be a very solid, and potentially very good, 3-4 DE.

Potty played a lot in preseason and sporadically during the year. As I said, he’s immense. 6’8 300 lbs. and a frame that could easily hold more weight. He’s naturally stronger than almost everyone else, and what I said before about him getting his hands on you is true. He is still quite raw and needs to continue to work on his technique and fundamentals, but he has more potential than most fans realize. He’s already a solid player, as his size makes him a non-liability in the running game. He can collapse the pocket and get his hands up to basically block passes going to his side.

And check out the site Pro Football Focus. They grade players on a per-play basis. And if you check out the DT rankings, guess who are both in the top 10 in the NFL? Devito and Pouha. They’re both exceptional against the run and can collapse the pocket on pass plays, and will probably get a couple of sacks per season. They’re more than just backups, they’re legitimate players in this league.

    The link to those rankings:

    http://profootballfocus.com/by_position.php?tab=by_position&season=2009&pos=DT&stype=r&runpass=&teamid=-1&numsnaps=25&numgames=1

  79. avatar JetsFanInSouthFlorida says:

    Brendan,

I hope you are right about all of those guys, as I bleed Green and White. I am impressed with those stats and will change my opinion on both DeVito and Pouha, but I wonder how much the constant blitzing helped them out. When you consider that OLineman had to always keep an eye out for just about anything, and that unlike a Haynesworth who graded out very well there, they were never being double teamed.

Now it is time for me to get pessimistic with this thread. Let’s say that Jenks has trouble getting back onto the field at 100%, which is a possibility. This would once again force Pouha into a starting role, which I believe he can hold down, like he did last year. I would prefer him to be a rotational backup, but fine. Now Ellis and DeVito are your starting ends. DeVito may also have to serve as Pouha’s backup, as I don’t see Potty being able to play the nose. This means more playing time for two unproven players as Gholston (assuming 1st in rotation) would have to play a large number of snaps spelling DeVito at end and Potty just somewhat less. Are either of them ready for this type of exposure? That has yet to be proven. My preference would be to not have to spend the hole season hoping and praying that Jenks and Ellis stay healthy. Note that this is something that we were not as worried about this past season since we had Green and Douglas as well.

Now, if we were to draft a guy like Odrick, he has the size and ability to play any position on the DLine. This would immediately ease my worries about our depth there. A solid rotation of Ellis, Jenks, Pouha, DeVito, and Odrick with Potty, Wright and Gholston in case someone goes down.

  80. avatar Brendan says:

    JFiSF,

In regards to Devito/Pouha replicating their success, I think that the blitz did play a role in their productivity, but that blitz ain’t going anywhere. They’ll have that same advantage this year as well.

I see what you’re saying in terms of the rotation. But also remember that Rex shifts from 3 down lineman to 4 to 5 to 2. It’s not your prototypical 3-4. Pace and Bryan Thomas both put their hand down in the dirt on some 4 down sets.

I just think spending a 1st round pick on Odrick instead of maybe using a mid to late round pick on a defensive lineman is going to leave the Jets unable to get an impact player at a position of need (pass rusher, safety, slot receiver, RB). Odrick can pass rush, but the Jets need a WILL, not another DE.

I would honestly be a little dissapointed if we went DL in round 1. Not that I think we shouldn’t address DL at all in the draft (cause we should), but edge pass rusher is one of those high skill positions that is hard to find outside of round 1. Plus, one of Rex’s strong points is getting maximum potential out of all his DL goons. We definitely didn’t lose the AFC championship game last year cause of our defensive line play. Hopefully, we can nab a guy like Brandon Graham or trade up for someone like Derrick Morgan… and not that this has anything to do with defense, but we gotta draft Jordan Shipley. He’ll be the new Chrebet!

If we sign Porter then we do not have to worry about drafting a pass rusher this year.
