For those interested in Penn State’s Jared Odrick for this Jets defense at the back half of the first round, did he just solidify his draft grade at his Pro Day? Joe Fortenbraugh of NFP reports that:
Odrick (6-5, 300) weighed in four pounds lighter on Wednesday than he did at the combine in Indianapolis last month. He stayed on his results from the combine in the bench press and three-cone drill, while posting a vertical jump of 30.0 and broad jump of 9-2.
In addition, the 2009 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year told us he lowered his 40 time to an impressive 4.89 seconds-down from the high 4.9 to low 5.0 range he ran at the combine.
Odrick also posted a short shuttle time of 4.44 seconds.
Odrick could be a great plug-in piece for the Jets at DE/DT. I’m sure this time didn’t hurt Odrick, but it’s hard to get a really good read on what this means, at least to me.
Odrick might shimmy his way up a few slots … maybe he he even becomes the late darling that shoots up boards as more and more teams are moving to the 3-4 this offseason. Pro Days are a bugaboo as any sense of consistency from varied surfaces, conditions, timings … everything’s different at Pro Days than a consistent situation at the Combine.

I’m assuming that Graham and Hughes are gone by 29, so my top pick is Jared Odrick.
The key to the 3-4 is the DL, and we need an infusion of youth. Jenkins is unreliable, and Ellis is at the end, the other guys (Pouha, Devito, etc.) are mediocre at best. Having Odrick playing with Jenkins and Ellis would be awesome, and he’d have great mentors.
My choice for #60…either Jordan Shipley, or Rashad Jones.
-
I think I rather have Carlos Dunlop more than this kid.
-
Eddie,
The good thing about Odrick is that he could start out as a 5 tech, and after a couple of years and pounds could switch to NT. He has the frame for it, just needs to bulk up a bit.
-
I saw one mock draft that had the Pats taking him at 22.
-
JETS4LIFE,
Trust me…you don’t. I should preface this with saying that I am not an Odrick fan. But Dunlap has Gholston 2.0 written allllllllll over him. Dunlap is incredibly athletic, so he relies on his superior athleticism to make plays. He doesn’t have very good technique and his motor is questionable. My brother is a Florida fan, so I’m forced to watch a lot of their games, and I couldn’t believe people were talking him up as a potential top 10 pick when he was loafing around the field.
Odrick, on the other hand, at least plays his tail off. He’s an athletic big guy who doesn’t rely on just one trick (speed, power, whatever) to get the job done. He’s tough and has a high motor.
While I don’t want either, I’d much much muchhhhhhhh rather have Odrick.
-
Him, Hughes or Graham will do. Other then a trade up or down. I woundnt mind trading down for Cody if he falls. I dont know wat i cant wait 4 the most. The draft, Opening day or Preseason (to see the rookies play)
-
i hope odrick is their at 29, does anyone know of de who went to a 3-4 olb that has been successful as of late, like what hughes, kendall of graham will b doing
-
and as for dunlap taking a risk on him with the 29th pick isn’t like gholston with the 6th
-
Has Tanny ever not traded up on draft day aside from ghost ?
-
He didn’t trade up in the first round of 06. In Ghost’s year he did trade back into the first to get Keller.
-
BKKILLA lets see Lamarr Woodley,Brian Orakpo,Anthony Spencer, and Demarcus Ware.
Like this guy more than Dunlap you watch tape of Odrick he just wants it more Dunlap Doesnt have the high motor all the time

I still think that the Jets DL is more solid than most people think. First, if Big Jenks stays healthy, the DL is strong and deep. Second, if Big Jenks is not healthy all 16 games, the Pouha/DeVito combo worked well. Third, Pitoitua is as big as Odrick and may be ready for more PT. Fourth, Rex only activates 4-5 DL per game, so after Jenks, Ellis, DeVito and Pouha, Odrick and Pitoitua would be vying for PT. Fifth, we’re assuming Douglas signs elsewhere; if not, Odrick would be a complete waste because he’d have to compete with Pouha, DeVito AND Pitoitua for PT. Sixth, we’re further assuming that Gholston won’t play more DE, which seems to be in the cards. If that happens, the logjam at DE gets even tighter.
That’s why what the Jets need is a 3-4 WILL/DE pass rusher more than a DE. The Jets don’t have a real 3-4 WILL and even if the Jets sign AD (and I think he’d play SAM to free up WILL for Pace), another 3-4 WILL would have more of a chance for PT and would be more useful on special teams. I’m lobbying for Graham (even if the Jets have to trade up to get him) or Hughes. Heck, I might even prefer to take a flyer on Mt. Cody over Odrick…Big Jenks could be a great mentor and IMO Cody has as much upside as any DL in the draft. When in doubt, follow Parcells’ “Planet Theory” that there are not that many tall, 300+ lb. behemoths that play DL on Earth and when you have the chance to draft one, do it. One thing that the Jets have done great under Tanny’s regime is get their players in excellent condition. Two years under Sal Alosi and I guarantee Cody will be a stud.
-
If you believe Pool to be an ok answer at safety, there is no more pressing need on this team than to acquire some sort of pass rush. Got to the QB way to few times in the last 4 years.
-
Hell, I would pick him just because he has such a great football player sounding name — “Jaaaaared Oooodrick”.
-
The Jets DEFINITELY need help on the d-line. They could not generate a pass rush without blitzing (five or more defenders). Though if Cromartie pans out they might be able to get away with it, I tend to agree with the philosophy that you start at the lines. Teams can get away with a lot of weaknesses when they have good lines (see the Jets offense), imagine what an already impressive unit could do with one?
-
kevin curtis released…this would be a VERY smart move for a slot receiver
-
Kevin curtis was released… Jump on him!
-
SD99 – i totally agree with you that the need for an OLB is far more important then DE. I doubt Graham will get past the Pats, who need to draft a replacement for AT, but if Hughes falls to us that would be awesome. The kid is a little monster. Reminds me of Elvis Dumervil. That being said, he might be too small for Rex’s liking. Tradeing down for a 2 and a 3 wouldn’t be bad at all, cuz i also think that Mt. Cody could be a beast with a few years behind Jenkins.
And btw, Jenkins nickname is NOT Big Jenks, it’s Jenk Daddy Jenks. That’s a way better nickname.
-
THis is the guy you need. Next to Big Jinx I think this guy has a lot to offer.
-
Jets could go several ways:
1) Sign Kevin Curtis (to play slot) and sign Darren Sharper
2) Trade 2nd and 1st up to mid 1st and draft the best DE/DT there is.or
eep their current picks… Wait for one of Mays, Odrick, Graham, or Hughes to fall to them at 29. If none of them do then draft cody. then draft williams/shipley/benn/another wr in the 2nd.
-
ramble 914- “Jenkins is unreliable, and Ellis is at the end, the other guys (Pouha, Devito, etc.) are mediocre at best”. You’re being over dramatic. If Jenkins was unreliable he wouldn’t be starting “as a 3-4 NG”. Elllis isn’t mediocre but solid…if he was mediocre he wouldn’t have been even considered for the pro bowl…….Devito is up and coming, and Pouha is an excellent backup…….we’re not rebuilding our DL, we’re reinforcing it……we’re not NE…..get your mind right boy.
-
Agree about Curtis. At least in my Madden experience. Lol
-
Hey SackDance99,
You and Bent are the best bloggers on this website by far!!!!! You have excellent insight and analysis. I’m very impressed. I always like to read your posts. Nice Job. I completely agree with you in fact I think Mike Devito, Ripotua & Sione have done a good job and may see more playing time next year. Go Jets. Charles D

Like I said before- I love this kid Odrick
My Wish List
1- Brandon Graham
2-Jerry Hughes
3-Jared Odrick
4- Dan Williams if availableA WR taken rd 1 is unacceptable and I will KILL the FO if they take one 29th…you dont take a WR round one unless he is Andre Johnson-Calvin Johnson type…other than that they are a dime a dozen
-
Hughes is projected as late first rounder anywhere from 25-32…he should be there for us
-
Pouha by some sites ranking was one of the best dt’s of 2009.
-
i heard the jags might trade down from 10 ….. tanny should start trying to weel and deal on that
-
if they get the 10th pick wouldnt you think they’d end up drafting dez bryant with it?
-
you know what i dont actually know what they would do … theres so many options dez bryant is oneof those huge adre johnshon types so if we do get the 10 pick somehow i honestly have no idea what would happen
-
Keep talking about Jenkins, he hasn’t played a full season yet. Without Jenkins we lack a dominant NT. Yes Pouha filled in admirably last season, but I’m not willing to bet my season on him
IMO, we need to add some youth, talented youth to our DL. It all starts in the trenches. Lose the LOS and you lose the game.
In the immortal words of Dakar “just my thoughts”..
-
This is such a deep draft that, there are a number of players who can fall to us at 29 and make an impact. Knowing Tanny, he is either going to move up and get someone he loves or move back and add picks. I would be shocked if we were sitting there, when the 29th pick comes up. You have to admit, Tanny is exciting, on draft day. Go, Tanman.
-
ramble914, hey just kidding, hope you don’t run off.
-
What did you just have another hit? Everything’s all better now?
-
I’ve been hanging here for 2 years now, I’m not going anywhere.
(in response to Lesean’s last comment) -
Yea i ganruntee you Tanny will move up. Mainly because he might get scared his targets may get picked. Tanny wont take chances and he will get his man. Also dont be surprised if we trade BACK into the first or second round. Jets seem to target about 3 guys and will do anything possible to atleast get two of them. We traded back in the 1st to get Keller and tried to get P Harvin. I would lose my mind if we drafted Graham AND Odrick and traded Bryon Thomas. OR we could draft Jerry Hughes AND Cody
-
Take the Mountain… not the DE
I like this Odrick kid… but I think NT Cody is the better pick at #29. There are not too many guys on the planet with his footwork, upperbody strength, and massive size. Even though most mock drafts have him going in the 2nd round, I think you pull the trigger at #29 if he falls that far.Pass Rush Need? Yes. but…
I agree there is a pass rush need, but I doubt #29 is where you make that move. The elite, fast-twitch 3-4 OLBs will not fall to #29. And the 2nd tier guys will likely be available later. Will the Jets trade up to grab a fast-twitch guy? I doubt it — they have too few picks in 2010 and they have Gholston’s contract eating up the 3-4 OLB budget.
Adding Adalius Thomas (if available) seems like the best move as he knows Rex’s system and can step in immediately.
If they have Adalius, Pace, and Westerman, the pass rush will not be elite, but it should be good enough. The Gholston Factor
I have not heard whether the team is looking to move Gholston to the DE position, but given his limitations in space, stiff hips, and inability to anticipate, this might be the only way to extract salvage value out of one of the biggest busts in recent Jet history. Let’s hope he can bulk up above 290 lbs and earn some time in the trenches.
Steroids and Steaks are the theme for this kid during the offseason. -
Trade Up To 10 I want Dez Bryant.. That Young Man Is Huge and can catch the ball!!
-
steroids and steak i like that
I hope they trade back to get Mount Cody or stay where they are and take him.in round 2 you can get a wide out but in the 4th guys like Marvin Austin (D-lineman unc) or Arthur Jones (D-line Syracuse) or Myron Rolle will be available as well lets also hope they start an infusion of youth on the o-line….
-
If not Mount Cody, then Cam Thomas.
-
THIS JUST IN…
It is rumored that Pacman Jones will relocate his pro day workout originally slated for Tulane University to the Solid Gold Strip Club in Ft Lauderdale. Apparently his agent wants his client to be in the most familiar setting possible for his big audition. LOL…..
-
we need a consistent pass rush. I expect REX to acquire a rusher in this draft. I also expect him to make a play for Zolton Meshko- punter- Michigan. The guy has a booming leg and will only get better. I also see a RB drafted by rd 3. I like the fact that Allison is healthy at WR.
-
Odrick is the pick for us for sure. He’s Richard Seymour 2.0 except not a *****. $100000000000000 says the Pats take Odrick at #22 just because they know he’s the missing piece on our D.
-
I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Jets draft up, but they will only do that if they think they have a game changer. That being said, they will not draft up for a defensive player. They will not draft up for a WR either. This draft has only 1 game changing player who could really impact a game from an offensive standpoint C.J. Spiller. L.T. may have just signed, but he is a shadow of his former self. S.G. is a legit threat, but he gets injured. If that happens then who do we have? L.W. may never be the player he once was. Do the Jets go for a guy like Spiller? Heck yeah! In 2010 the draft is going to be DL/DE heavy, along with WR’s. This year take a corner or a safety and if a DE/DL falls to you ok. But give me a gamebreaker any time. Jacoby Ford could be a good selection in the 3rd or 4th round.

I meant 2011

Alright I will preface this by saying I’m a HUGE jets and penn state fan so bringing a penn states to the jets would be great for me. Having said that, I want to tell people acutally what I’ve seen from Jared Odrick because I feel what the media has been writing about him was not the same as what I’ve seen the past four years (of which I haven’t missed one game). To start he’s NOTHING like gholston or maybin (again my penn state allegiance followed him) coming out of college. Both of these guys were known for athleticism and as a speed rusher and in maybin’s case came out too early without enough experience.
Now onto Odrick, first off biggest thing always during the out of conference psu schedule (which if you don’t know is always very weak), Odrick has always look unreal. When against inferior opponents he constantly is able to interupt the handoff and is almost always in the backfield before the halfback gets the ball. When it came to the real offensive lines that are in the big ten obviously this calms down but i still saw him much more as a player to frustrate the run more then a pass rush. Overall, he was a great run stopper and able to get pressure on the quarterback a lot but always from the DT spot (penn state plays 4-3 never was in a 3-4 position).
Onto what I think Odrick would do for the Jets. I definitely feel Odrick would be a good 3-4 DE run stopper or as ramble914 said if he could bulk up I could see him becoming a NT in the future. If you’re hoping to get a speed rusher or really bulking up the Jets push rush on the DL idk if Odricks the right guy. But because of the amount that we blitz I feel having a run stopper and someone that could command olinemen on the blitz could help in the Jets scheme. I think Odrick definitely could turn into a solid pro and would be a great player for the Jets. Because he stayed at psu all four years and consistently played well with no injury problems I could not see him as a bust at all.
Overall I’d say Odrick would be a low risk player with some reward who could really strengthen the Jets DL which is starting to need to become younger.

i was for getting spiller or best if the jets were unable to resign jones or washington… now that they have tomlinson and seemingly are going to resign washington running back is just something that is not necessary and quite frankly i dont see how you can fit in 4 potential starting running backs on one team and have them all be happy. not to mention the jets have danny woodhead as insurance if washington or another back gets injured. woodhead may not be the cream of the crop but he manages some production and carrying 4 running backs on 1 team is just too many… let alone 5 if they drafted best or spiller!
i agree with you though, that if they traded up it would be for a game changer. It wouldnt come in the form of rb though. It’d be if Suh or Berry extremely fell from projected top 5 picks to somewhere around 10th. OR it would be for Dez Bryant. The Jets may feel that Gholston could be their fix at de/dt, they may feel that pouha may be their fix at de/dt, or devito. will they be slim at that position yet again this season… yes. but they may feel like it is not their top necessity. which would allow tannenbaum to draft dez bryant… who is quite possibly the best receiver in this draft not necessarily because he has the most talent but because he is the closest wr to being nfl ready. does bryant have the ceiling to one day become somewhere near as talented as andre johnson… yes sir. drafting bryant would mean that cotchery would become the permanent slot receiver. theres pros and cons to that… cotchery has some of the surest hands in the entire league, he also is no slouch in terms of speed. cons — its not his natural position and quite honestly, even though he is fast, he is not fast enough to be a slot receiver. which is why im sort of singling out the Jets hopes of trading up for bryant. so if they r trading up my guess it would be for berry or suh… if either of them slipped somehow.

If they have Adalius, Pace, and Westerman, the pass rush will not be elite, but it should be good enough. Can you tell me what rounds these guys were drafted in?
Joey Porter
Adalius Thomas
James Harrison
LaMar Woodley
Jason TaylorEither now or in the past, these guys have been premier 3-4 OLB pass rushers and I’ll give you a hint…not one was drafted in Rd One…DE/OLBs slip because they are tweeners or have to switch positions and if you have one that you think is “the guy” you pick the best pass rusher available every time
-
Eddie… we agree.
My comments were about the fast-twitch guys… as they seem unlikely to fall to 29. Think Merriman (San Diego) and Ware (Dallas).
I suspect a 2nd tier guy (like the ones you mentioned above) might be available later. My point, was to not take the 2nd tier guy at #29. -
Honestly I Think the way our FO is thinking is We Need To Make This Offense More Explosive. Yeah they think we can upgrade the Pass Rush but If we trade up I expect them to draft Dez Bryant.
I mean when has our FO done what we expected them to do? -
Why aren’t we going after Joey Porter? He’s about to sign with the Cardinals.
-
smashmouth,
Couldn’t agree more. From what I’ve read he isn’t that close to signing with the Cards though. Either way, I want him more than anyone else we could get.
-
Gary,
Your partially right, in that what the Jets FO will try to do in the first round is bolster our pass rush, but even tho Odrick himself is not an elite pass rusher, hes PERFECT for the Jets.
Rex loves to blitz from every angle, so if you have a guy like Odrick, who is going to command a double team on the line like Jenkins, your talking about opening up HUGE holes for LBs and DBs to fly through and crush the QB.
Lining up next to Jenkins would give him opportunities to make plays as well as the attention would not be soley on him.
Think Hloti Ngata, the Jets will be looking to draft a DT/DE and play them at DE, not a pure pass rushing DE.
Dan Williams would be perfect, Mount Cody would be pretty interesting, tho I think he would be too slow to put at DE. Brian Price would be very good for us too.
Simply put, there are a ton of options for the Jets, and they will not have to do much to get a player they can use, but I think Odrick is the best fit.
-
I want to be clear on one thing. Yes absolutely the Jets need to have more of a presence in the pass rush, PERIOD. My intent was to show that we can live and do quite well with the defense we employ right now. But you can never have too many offensive weapons. While I agree we have L.T. S.G. L.W. D.W. only one of the bunch truely has game changing ability up to this point. L.T. were hoping with our OL will be good again. That L.W. returns to form, and that D.W. will fill in admirably. Dez Bryant will not be as much a factor in his first year or 3 years down the road, very few WR’s come out gang busters. I’ll take Spiller all day, this guy is going to be very special in the NFL. Line him up in the backfield with Greene and you don’t know if they are going to run over you or around you and past you. Talk about opening up the passing game. All day gentlemen, all day, give me the game changer.
-
mike s
Ware is an absolute beast but he climbed, he went to a small school and was only drafted 12th or 13th,Merriman not much different.
And Graham is not a “2nd tier guy”, he’s widely regarded as the best pure pass rusher in the draft..and we pick 29th and have no third rounder…its not like we have all these options, we dont have the luxury of waiting this year
The Jets should take the best pass rusher available at 29…thats all they need to be a dominant D

This kid is going to be a SICK 5 technique in a 3-4
If Graham and Hughes are gone and this kid is there at 29…welcome to the Jets Jared
