Links: Tebow A Go-Go

by Bassett on March 18th, 2010 at 9:31 am

Not that we really care all that much since we’ve got both a solid QB and a set of Tight Ends, but Tim Tebow’s Pro Day was something of a circus, so here’s what those in attendance are saying. Obviously, opinions were varied.

Mayock: “Much tighter” and “highly impressive.”
Pricso: “It shouldn’t change anyone’s thinking.”
Charlie Bernstein: “If he didn’t wear … [a] Florida helmet, he’d be a sixth or seventh round pick.”

Tebow is a total project but I think he could have a package of plays put him for him as a QB where he could be effective…

Ive still never seen a college football player completely put his team on his back and WILL them to a title though…

That being said this is the NFL

  2. avatar Pdubbs says:

I don’t even know why I am commenting cause I don’t care but …. that was an already good team he put on his back.

I like Tebow but where does he fit ? What do you do with an offensive “tweener?”

  3. avatar Brendan says:

    zzzzzzzzz.

Tebow was on a loaded offense and can’t throw a football. Wake me up when he’s the next Eric Crouch.

  4. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

The headline should read, “Teabow A No-No”

Is it me, or does Jimmy Clausen also seem highly over-rated?

  5. avatar AKA...Drew says:

The guy will go down as one of the top 10 greatest college players of all time.

He is trying to work his ass off to catch on with a team and be successful.

I am not a Tebow or a Florida fan but the kid has every thing you would want if youre a coach….the problem is he will probably never be a Pro QB.

  6. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

So were Bama, LSU and Oklahoma

  7. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    jetobsessed28

I kepp hearing Jimmy Clausen is going in the top 10 but I keep thinking….How does this guy evene have a 1st round grade on him.

Sounds like the ND machine is behind this one…. Very Overrated!

  8. avatar Brendan says:

    Eddie,

Florida was by far more talented on offense than any of those teams. He didn’t carry a team as much as guide it.

  9. avatar Brendan says:

I actually think Claussen is going to be good. He’s got a cannon and a good pedigree. The biggest worry is that he has already reached the majority of his potential being coached so professionally his whole career.

  10. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Alright I’ll amend my choice of words…he LED them like freakin PATTON did

  11. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

AKA Drew…thats what I meant to say

  12. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Clausen can make all the throws…in an offense that is tailored to his strengths I think the kid can be a good NFL QB

  13. avatar JayM says:

If you watch the NFL channel you will see that Mayock has a man crush on Tebow. Then they had Caserly on and he said maybe a 4th round pick.

  14. avatar Brendan says:

hahahahaha the NFL invited Tebow to attend the draft in person. Please. Please, please, please, please go. He’d be sitting there for 3 days, literally.

  15. avatar JayM says:

I am so glad the Jets have Sanchez can you imagine all the crap we would have to hear about QB’s this year

  16. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

    JayM: Amen to that!

  17. avatar sexy rexy says:

I know it sounds crazy…but Tebow is gonna be a superstar. Im telling you, some players just have that will to win. I know I sound like ESPN, but watch…..I think he’d fit perfectly in Denver, awesome O Line, good receivers, Knowshon.

  18. avatar C Low says:

Why would the NFL invite Tebow to the draft? Especially now since it so much more drawn out. I hope he brings some reading material with him to the green room.

As a diehard Gator and Jet fan since birth I am grounded. Tebow is the best college footballer I have ever seen, although Percy Harvin is by far my favorite college player. Obviously I am biased.
But watching Tebow play I knew his spread offense game was strictly built for college ONLY. The fact that in his entire college career HE NEVER TOOK ONE SNAP BEHIND CENTER says it all! Even if he fine tunes his delivery he still HAS NEVER DROPPED BACK IN A REGULAR SEASON GAME.

  19. avatar sexy rexy says:

and they play that McDaniels shotgun offense that Tebow likes.

  20. avatar BigKatt wants a ring says:

JayM i know what you mean. Having a franchise QB is the bomb.

  21. avatar SoFlaJets says:

Chad Henne said yesterday on a Miami radio show that “Tim Tebow isn’t an NFL quarterback”

  22. avatar BigKatt wants a ring says:

And no way sexy rexy, he’s going to hold a clipboard for a few years, then he’ll be gone.

  23. avatar Brendan says:

    Sexy Rexy,

Sorry, but Josh McDaniel’s offense is nothing like Urban Meyers’. The only thing similar is they both use a lot of spread-out offensive sets, but one is used to primarily run options, one is used to pass. Tebow would probably be better off on a team that runs the ball and can protect him, but again, he’s going to be average at best and switch positions.

Eric Cro……I mean Tim Tebow is going 4th round or later, unless a team’s GM had a brain aneurysm and picks him earlier.

  24. avatar C Low says:

I honestly think Tebow has a better shot at Jets OLB than back-up. Remember Tebow ran the 6th FASTEST time in the ENTIRE combine in the cone drill. He doesn’t have blazing speed but he can come around that edge really good.

Either that or a TE. Playing shotgun EVERY snap in college has to give you good hands enough to play TE. And we all know how Tebow plays. He doesn’t get tackled, he tackles you. He plays like he’s 270lb.

  25. avatar Revis Christ says:

yeah clausen is overrated except for the fact that he has played in an nfl style offense his whole college career under an nfl offensive coordinator that his team had no defense so he carried the team every game of his college career had no offensive line until his last year… last year he threw 28 tds while ONLY THROWING 4 PICKS and he was always able to make the comeback or game winning drive.. this kid was the most highly recruited kid outta high school .. this kid is soo overratted and never gonna make it in the nfl NOTTTTTTTTTT

  26. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

That terrible that they invited him to the draft…that is just ridiculous

Why put someone through that? At the earliest he is going late round 2?

  27. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Oh and if Chez stays in school, he is going number 1 to the Rams…Chez is better than all these kids and its not even close

  28. avatar C Low says:

Looking back on it, you are right. sanchez might have went #1. But he’s still making a boatload playing for a good team in a great market for endorsement revenue on the side. Plus even if he stayed at USC their D still would have sucked and would have been a long final year for him. Great move on his part.

  29. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    C Low

I course its a great move…I love the kid and I couldnt imagine him playing for another team

I was just saying that for all the crybabies out there who knock the trade because we gave up Kenyon Coleman, Abe Elam and Brett Ratliff that franchise QBs are hard to find.

Once again Mr T proves shows his meddle

  30. avatar Brendan says:

Anyone who cried because we gave up Coleman, Elam & Ratty for Sanchez didn’t know what they were talking about anyway.

  31. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    C Low

USC goes to the Rose Bowl if Sanchez stays…maybe they dont win a National Title but they get past Oregon, that team just didnt have anyone to lead it as Mitch Mustain and the other kid werent quite there yet

  32. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    Brendan

You know who I am talking about…lol

  33. avatar Brendan says:

Haha ohhhhh I know my friend, oh too well.

  34. avatar jvsvn says:

I must admit, I don’t really get all this Tebow nonsense. How is it that he is working on developing basic skills 2 months before the draft. What has he (and the UF coaches) been doing for the last 4 years? It doesn’t make any sense to me. If I were looking for a QB in the draft , I’d stay far away from Tebow. Thank god we went out and got Sanchez last year.

  35. A) There might be a bunch of 2nd round prospects invited to the draft. In fact BECAUSE the draft is being drawn out, they want more people there for day 2.

    B) He looked ok, not great, yesterday and that was with NO pressure. When he got tired, he reverted. Still a project who will either go 2nd or 3rd – and if his name wasn’t Tebow, we’d be talking 4th and beyond.

    c) ‘All he does is win’, ‘he’s a leader’ and ‘greatest college QB ever’ don’t mean he’ll be any good at the Pro Level if he cannot withstand the pressure, read the WHOLE field and keep his mechanics consistent. I LIKE the kid, I kinda want him to succeed but the fact is that he is a HUGE project and will remain so for a few years.

    d) Clausen is a guy I am split on. Sometimes I love what I see, sometimes I don’t. I will regurgitate what I’ve seen a few places (and talked to former scout Dan Jeremiah of MoveTheSticks.com on my show last night) and say that if he does slip past that first 10, he could tumble out of the first. A lot of teams past Buffalo are now locked at QB.

Which in the end, might be good news for Jimmy C. He’ll get time to develop on a team with a less pressing need at QB.

  36. avatar AKA...Drew says:

I assume the “person” brendan is calling out will make a guest appearance to today to defend himself…lol

As to inviting Tebow to the draft. The NFL is now inviting 18 players instead of the 9 in previous years. Since they have spread it out over 3 days now……. they realize some of the 18 will not be 1st rounds picks.

They (the NFL) are looking for photo ops on day 2 of the draft. Tebow has been pretty humble in understanding where he might fall in this draft. He is not coming or being invited because anyone thinks he will be a 1st rounder.

  37. avatar Vince says:

Did anyone see the footage of his proday? His new throwing motion looked very unnatural to me. It looked like he had the ball cocked back for too long and the release was weird. Am I the only one who saw that? His footwork was fine but it looks like he is still getting used to his new throwing motion. Even if I was a GM that needed a QB i don’t think I would take him any higher than 4th or 5th (depending on who’s on the board).

  38. avatar Marvel says:

About a month ago evry mock draft in the world had the Jags taking Tebow .. That’s way too early for him but I wouldn’t be suprised if they trade down (with the jets) and picked Tebow up later in the first round .

Clausen reminds me of Rivers a little bit ..

  39. avatar C Low says:

    Eddie, how can you say:

“USC goes to the Rose Bowl if Sanchez stays…”

They MIGHT have made the Rose Bowl. But even if they MIGHT have made the Rose Bowl, they are EXPECTED to at least go there every year.

Dude, the USC defense gave up

    47 points to Oregon and
    55 points to Stanford.

You could have had Peyton Manning behind center and he’s not making up those points with their offense.

  40. Vince:

no you’re not the only one who saw it. clearly his new mechanics are still very much a work in progress. He’s having to think it threw every time. I worry if he can do that AND read the defense.

just a month in – I didn’t expect miracles even if he is Football Jesus.

  41. avatar C Low says:

Inviting Tebow is just wrong on so many levels. Its not fair to him or to the other players who he will be taking air time away from. He is a late 3rd rounder at best.

The fact that the NFL and/or ESPN has him coming to the draft is all about making sure their is enough storyline to keep you interested.

However, for any NFL team looking to get Tebow in the late rounds it might make them a bit nervous knowing that he is at the draft.

  42. avatar Give Leon The Damn Ball says:

Tim tebow may be the most overrated college football player of all time..I’m not saying he wasn’t good, but he was enormously a product of urban meyers’ system..and just like Chris leak, who put up big numbers and won a championship (people tend to give tebow credit for that one), whomever succeeds tebow will probably put up big numbers as well.

“best college football player I’ve ever seen” or “top 10 player of all time”? you don’t watch enough college football IMHO. Reggie bush, Lavar arrington, Larry Fitzgerald, and Vince young were all more dominating at their respective positions..especially Vince who was 10 times the player tebow was.

  43. avatar sexy rexy says:

@ Brendan doesn’t McDaniels run a lot of screens when Orton was there? And what about that offensive line. theyre dominant like the Jets. Eddie Royal Brandon Marshall Tebow could use his old throwing motion and be successful lol plus he can run….over people.

  44. avatar sexy rexy says:

frankly, I’ll be stunned if Tebow is not a star. I’ma die-hard Jets fan but id love him to come to Buffalo.

  45. avatar Brendan says:

    sexy rexy,

Urban Meyer runs a spread option offense. Run first, run second, run third and maybe throw a pass. McDaniels runs an entirely different spread offense based off the pass. Tebow wouldn’t even see the field with Orton, who is a pretty good QB but nothing special, in front of him. Tebow is destined to either switch positions or be a backup. I don’t know how you can look at a guy who throws a football like he’s winging a boomerang or launching a beach ball and say you’ll be stunned if he’s not a star.

Hey- ok they might have- but having a blue chip stud future NFL QB under center does nothing to improve that team?

C,mon man…they are better TENFOLD with Sanchez at QB for his senior year…I’ll leave it at that

  47. avatar dakar says:

1 thing about tebow is he really knows how to get into the endzone…57 rushing TDs is very good for a QB… and for a guy who isnt concidered that good threw for over 9200 yards and 88 TDs should definitly get drafted wether he’s a project or not…the guy can play…the question every1 wants an answer to is what position will he play…if not QB…and i guess this is what scares every1 about him…which is why he will fall to the 4th or 5th round because every1 is a sceptic to his abilities…if that makes any sense…just my thoughts…

  48. avatar SackDance99 says:

I think if a team is patient and allows Tebow to continue to work on his mechanics, he will be an NFL QB. He needs to get drafted by a team that has an established QB and a 2-3 year window for that QB to retire or move on. The thing about Tebow is that he has intangibles up the wazoo and he has the size and strength to be a real good QB. With his work ethic and football DNA, I really think that he will become a star.

  49. avatar JesusRevis says:

    Sack,

I agree. And I worry that the team youre describing may be the Patriots. They could draft Tebow, mold him and let him learn behind Tom Brady for a few years.

  50. avatar Revis Christ says:

i agree that tim tebow has the build to be a nfl qb. but hes gonna be a huge project and hes not gonna be able to run like he did against nfl defenses

  51. avatar SackDance99 says:

    JR,

The Pats or Colts would be obvious choices, but I have a feeling the Steelers might be in the mix. I think Big Ben is wearing out his welcome and the Steelers need a “move the chains” QB because of their great defense. Draft Tebow, let him learn behind Big Ben for 2 years and, then, trade Big Ben for a 1st rounder and more.

  52. avatar Brendan says:

Steelers have Batch & Dixon. I don’t think they’ll pick a QB because their “great” defense isn’t what it used to be and with injury question marks in Aaron Smith and Troy Polomalu they need upgrades all over the defense (and they let Ryan Clark walk).

  53. avatar SackDance99 says:

    Brendan,

I think it depends on when Tebow goes. A 1st rounder on Tebow would be nutty. But, he will go in the 2nd or 3rd round. Plus, Tomlin was at Tebow’s workout. Tomlin doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who just shows up to see what the buzz is about.

  54. avatar SackDance99 says:

    Brendan,

The Steelers re-signed Clark and have Will Allen. I think they’re more set on defense than you think.

  55. avatar Brendan says:

Oh I forgot they resigned him. But Will Allen provides about as much of an upgrade as I do. He’s miserable.

I think Tomlin could have been there to see Haden or Spikes as they need to upgrade both of those spots. I could see it maybe in the 4th or something, but to waste one of their top 3 picks on a QB when they already have 3 on the roster, and their starter is only 28 (despite his personal issues)? I can’t see them doing that.

  56. avatar SackDance99 says:

    Brendan,

It’s not that Will Allen is an upgrade as much as veteran depth. Also, I do not believe Batch has been re-signed and I also do not know whether he recovered from his wrist injury. If the Steelers feel comfortable with Dixon as the back up (and he nearly beat the Ravens last year), then Tebow would only be the 3rd QB and Tebow could play other positions. Again, Tomlin stayed for and monitored Tebow’s workout and, while the Steelers need to upgrade certain positions, I’m not sure the Florida guys are at positions that they most need to upgrade. I like the Steelers’ CBs and I like their depth at CB…Haden would be a potential upgrade, but IMO is not a “need” pick. IMO, the “need” pick for the 1st round would be on the OL. Also, they need RB depth behind Mendenhall, especially a “change of pace” RB. And, generally, the Steelers’ problems are health and offensive firepower and, maybe, DL depth.

  57. avatar pound4pound says:

I really respect Tebow for having worked his tail off the last few weeks to overhaul his mechanics. He’s obviously got the right makeup to be an NFL player, and I have to figure his teammates will respect him. But my biggest concerns with him are his reads / recognition and decision-making, not his mechanics. McShay and Mayock have both broken down a slew of examples when Tebow had to make quick decisions after the defense adjusted to his primary call – and both showed that he usually struggled with that. I think that’s a lot more damning for his pro prospects, because almost every above-average NFL QB came into the league having demonstrated those abilities.

Whatever happens, I wish him luck. Unless he goes to the Pats, in which case I hope he steps on Brady’s ankle in practice.

  58. avatar rusty sanchez says:

    jets obssesed
not a big notre dame fan but watched quite a few of their games and your right whats with all this hype for claussen his first and second year was jus flat out horrible and his third year wasnt much to pick him with a top ten pick like i see they have him slotted in every mock draft

  59. avatar bleedsgreen&white says:

I think its in the jags best interest to take him i mean Garrard is there and they can get another veteran and then he can just learn the ropes. Hes not going to be comfortable with that throwing motion right away and you guys are right it did look unnatural but its a huge diff from where he was before.

I was never a huge Tebow fan and thought he was overrated but theres one thing you cant deny, he works hard, and he loves football.

Give him a year to develop and he might fine.

  60. avatar sexy rexy says:

u could throw a beach ball to Marshall and hed probably come down with it lol. but thats a moot point cause we still don’t even know where Tebow will end up. I’m rooting for the kid.

  61. avatar sexy rexy says:

except if got drafted by the Bills and was facing the Jets lol

  62. avatar sexy rexy says:

one more thing…Tom Brady 6th round? Drew Brees 2nd Round? Brett Favre 2nd Round? How does that happen? oh and Colt McCoy is gonna be a good starting QB as well. /seriously

  63. avatar C Low says:

I have watched a ton of college football in my life. I have never seen a player impact a game like Tebow. In college he is an above average arm, accuracy. He also is a RB/FB, battering ran for 3rd and short and the inspirational leader of his team. Urban Meyer even said that he has learned so much from Tebow when it comes to leadership, dedication, and selflessness. Do I think he is over-rated. In college……absolutely not, after his final college ggame against Cincy……absolutely. How can you say a college footballer was overirated in college when they won 2 Nat’l Chapionships, 1 Heisman AS A SOPHMORE, and was nominated 2 other times.
