Jets Sign Special Teamer Lance Laury

By Bassett on 19. Mar, 2010

The Jets have signed a special teamer to add some depth to that unit. Lance Laury formerly of the Seahawks, has agreed to a contract with the Jets.

The New York Jets have agreed to terms with linebacker and special-teams ace Lance Laury, according to his agent, David Canter.

The former Seattle Seahawks special-teams captain visited the Jets over the past two days.

Laury, 28, was signed by the Seahawks in 2006 as an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina.

The 6-foot-2, 237-pound special-teams standout recorded 21 tackles last season and forced one fumble while playing in every game.

For his career, Laury has registered 64 tackles and two forced fumbles.

With the loss of Murrell and Izzo, the team hass been looking high and low here. He’s best used in the kicking game, but lacks “ideal” NFL speed. Laury is known as a physical tackler when he has the target lined up.

Thanks to roderider for the heads up!

Solid pickup. Don’t expect much contribution on defense but I’ve seen this guy play. Determined guy and gets to the ball carrying real quick. Westoff should only bring improve to this guy.

I haven’t seen this guy, anyone know if he can play backup Ted?

Not enough to replace Murrell, Izzo, Fowler, Wright, and Trusnik (who was never really replaced), but it’s a start.

Izzo & Fowler weren’t that good on specials this year. Murrell was but was overshadowed by Westermann IMO. Trusnik is the big hole as I think people overrate Wright on specials while neglecting Brad Smith, who was the true #1 gunner on the Jets last season.

This guy can maybe pick up some of the slack that was left when we traded Trusnick

Very good addition….Westoff now has no reason to allow teams to return KO’s to the 50

On a down note….the more players we add the worse the chances of Danny Woddhead making the team….lol

Totally Off Topic but why am I slowly leaning towards wanting the Jets to draft Taylor Mays?

Why the hell is Woodhead my 6th WR in Madden .. I wanted to put him in the backfield for my play action screen passes but it’s not possible .. I was very upset … OK very is a bit much .. But I was upset ..

For all you Porter proponents (I was too)…from rotoworld

Cardinals signed OLB Joey Porter to a three-year contract.

With Porter opposite Clark Haggans, the Cardinals now look like the Steelers West, 2005 version, at outside linebacker. Porter’s nine sacks last year seem good enough on paper, but he only had 11 QB hurries all season and turns 33 next week. He offers some leadership, but the Cards shouldn’t let Porter get in the way of promising young pass rushers Will Davis and Cody Brown.

No Im not drinking lol Its just the physical talent is there and im soo curious if Rex could turn him into a average cover safety because then he would be a great Safety. Think he has to be an average cover safety because with Cro and Revis he will mainly be just helping out most of the time lol.

I am not buying the Mays hype. We all thought Rex could turn the physical freak Gholston into a player and he barely got off his ass this year.

Mays is not a good cover guy, lacks instincts and overall is not a very good safety….yes he hits hard but so do guys we can get in the 2nd round with just as much if not more upside

    No Way … No Mays

He ain’t no Ronnie Lott. Running a 40 (head down, straight ahead) and reacting to a multiple of variables at game speed are two very distinct things.

but can I do that for online play ? I don’t play season mode I just like crushing people from other states ..

As for Mays I very much like the idea of him being a JET .. You can’t like Erick Smith & not like Mays . Mays can learn how to cover, it’s not like you gotta teach him how to cover the number 1 WR he jst has to focus on TEs & 3rd recievers… But R.Jones is probably the better move in round 2 .. I’d be cool with one or the other ..

I like Eric Smith as a backup safety at best making no money….I dont want to draft a project safety and play him a lot of money to “hopefully” learn how to have insticnts and cover.

R Jones, C Jones are two guys you can have later in the draft that bring similar styles to Mays with more consistency in coverage

    19. Mar, 2010 at 8:00 pm #

Difference is Gholston has no drive. Haven’t really heard anything on Taylor Mays’s attitude.
All Im saying is the hype is getting to me and you wont find a safety in the 2nd round thats as fast as taylor and hits just as hard with the same body as him.
He Cover issues are A HUGE Issue dont get me wrong but there has to be more to it if no one was even talking about his Cover skills a year ago….

Yea I can’t argue with that .. It’s just Mays has the “WOW” factor plus I’m a sucker for a “big name” … But if I was GM playing with real money I’d go R.Jones .. But why are us Jets fans so high on Jones , I mean why isn’t he mentioned with Berry,Thomas,Mays etc ..

I am totally against drafting Mays. A guy who has his athletic ability and doesn’t make plays on the college level is not going to make plays in the pros. It would surprise me very much if Ryan wanted him. Ryan’s history shows that he tends to like “football players” over “athletes.” To me, Mays doesn’t seem like a Ryan type guy.

    19. Mar, 2010 at 10:37 pm #

jvsvn – That’s exactly why I found the Cromartie deal surprising. The impression I have of Cromartie is that he is not much of a tackler and I thought Rex wanted man to man corners that can tackle in the open field.

  33. AKA...Drew
    19. Mar, 2010 at 10:43 pm #

Rex had some guys in Baltimore that were total cover corners and were not big time tackles or guys who even liked to tackle…..plus playing opposite Revis the CB has to be able to play the ball…..thats why the Cro deal made sense.

    19. Mar, 2010 at 10:47 pm #

Just an early thought…..since Round 2 is a full 24 hours after the completion of Round 1…..look for the Jets to make a trade into the early 2nd round for a player they want……

I said the same thing in another post Drew. I said we make 2 picks in the 1st but your take on it makes more sence. So dont be surprised if we trade back in any round. The jets try to do it every year.

    19. Mar, 2010 at 11:31 pm #

A true cover corner has a unique set of skills that very few people possess. If you can cover an elite NFL receiver one on one then you have a lot of value whether or not you can or will do much else. Deon Sanders is probably the ultimate example of that. Obviously, Cromartie isn’t anywhere close to that level (or even as good as Revis) but he does have real one on one coverage skills at the CB position. Combining Cromartie with Revis gives our defense a tremendous amount of flexibility in how the defense can line up or switch off and what we can do with the other 9 nine guys. It should be fun to watch. As for Mays, he made some big hits when they came his way but he just didn’t seem to have that IT factor to be a true playmaker. I don’t know if it’s anticipation, peripheral vision, effort, or what. I don’t think his production in college warrants a 1st round selection. As I said in my previous post, if your not a playmaker in college you’re probably not going to be one in the NFL.

Why do we still have Vernon Gholston? Can’t we cut him w/o a penalty?

I live in Seattle. Laury’s just about as good as Wallace Wright. I much rather have Wright though. I’m assuming we’re paying much less for him.

    Drew-

Taylor Mays worries me—he can hit, but he can’t cover. Reminds me of Eric Smith in this regard, and while Smith is fine as someone to rotate in, he isn’t a starter.

I really like Reshad Jones in the second round.

Would love to draft Earl Thomas in the first if he fell to us, though this seems unlikely.

Of course Eric Berry is a monster and looks to be an All Pro early in his career, but we’d have to trade way up to get him, and this seems highly unlikely.

    20. Mar, 2010 at 7:32 am #

Alex – they owe him $5.9m whether they cut him or not, so cutting him will only accelerate that. They might as well keep him and get what use they can out of him, even if it’s just as a backup or special teamer. The coaching staff have said they see some potential in him as a rotation lineman, so plan to encourage him to bulk up. Financially, it makes sense to give him the season. If the cap comes back, they will be able to cut him cap efficiently next year.

    Ben

I totally agree on Mays…… He reminds me of R Williams when he came out of OU and went high to the Cowboys.

I think (as do most scouts) that E Thomas will be a CB more than a safety. He is not very physical but can really cover.

I have always preferred Chad Jones of R Jones. I know R Jones is rated a little higher but I just think Chad Jones “can” become a star and will still be around maybe into the 3rd round maybe the 4th due to some “off” combine/proday numbers. But I wouldnt hate R Jones

Is anyone a little frustrated that Mr. T did not even look at Joey Porter?? How does a player like that not even get a look?

I realize they are patiently waiting for AT to be released but putting all their eggs in one basket may backfire if the Pats decide to keep him.

    Drew-

Yes, I can definitely see Earl Thomas being turned into a safety. He has amazing cover skills.

But I think we should still draft him if he falls to us in the first round (though, as I said above, I think this is unlikely). E. Thomas is a great talent.

The thing about R. Jones is he hits like a truck, knows how to tackle, can stop the run, and can intercept. He looks great to me.

Seems that Mike T and Rex are going to draft at least a couple of DBs—safety and CB. So if he’s there in the third or fourth round, as you say, then C. Jones could easily be one of those DBs.

    One more thing, Drew-

The one thing we need in the S who replaces Rhodes is a solid cover guy, and other than Berry (who we’d have to trade way up for, and probably won’t), Earl Thomas may be the best cover safety in the entire draft.

“I haven’t seen this guy, anyone know if he can play backup Ted?”

He’s exclusively a special teamer, who has taken just one snap on defense in three years.
