Last weekend I wondered if the Jets would be interested in slot receiver Kevin Curtis. It looks like we’ll get the chance to find out as the Eagles and Curtis have parted ways, officially.
The move isn’t surprising. Curtis was highly productive in his first season in Philadelphia, leading the team with 1,110 receiving yards. But injuries have limited him to just 12 games and 39 catches the last two years combined.
Curtis opened last season as a starter, but wound up with only six catches as he battled complications from sports hernia surgery, and then a knee injury.
Due $4.4 million in 2010, the Eagles had no choice but to release Curtis. He’s only 31 years old, however, and would make a decent low-cost gamble for some team out there.
The Jets had been sniffing around the Eagles door last summer for a receiver. If you’ll recall the Eagles had an embarrassment of riches at the spot (Jackson, Maclin, Avant, Lewis, Baskett, Brown, Curtis) but nothing ever came of it. It was assumed that the Jets were looking at either Avant or Lewis. There’s really no sure way of knowing what level of production the team would get out of Curtis due to his injuries, but I think he’d be worth a look, for all the reasons I laid out last weekend.
The Jets could potentially sign him to a low dollar deal if they’d be so inclined. It seems like a low-cost, short term answer to the problem, as the majority of young receivers take a few years to really figure out how to play in the pros. If they were to sign Curtis, it would call into question how the team uses WRs for specials.
Thanks to Chris L. for the heads up.

I would love for us to solve our issues at slot receiver through free agency, allowing us to draft some youth on the defensive side of the ball. I think we should wait until next years draft to get a WR in rounds 1 or 2.
-
Coles or Curtis?? Kind of a toss up for me but when healthy I think Curtis can provide more from the slot than Coles can.
-
Curtis. He’s a legit slot guy and I like his quickness more than Coles.
-
My heart says Coles, my brain says Curtis.
-
Coles or Curtis.. neither..
-
Jordan shipley rnd 2

As I said last week, if the Eagles prefer Hank Baskett(Ugghh!) to Curtis, I want no part of him.
BTW, those Coles-haters out there should read the favorable comments by Cotch.
-
Considering the low market price that Curtis would command, he is certainly worth picking up as long as he passes his physical. He was quite productive before his injuries, has good speed and hands. If he is healthy he could be a perfect slot receiver, whereas most potential WR draft choices will have little impact in this upcoming season where the Jets appear to be a legitimate contender.
-
if he is over all the health issues after a physical, i say take a shot…. just don’t let any met doctors near him.
-
I dont get the love for coles . all he ever did was complain . He always talked like he was a great wr like a moss.
-
NEITHER
-
spindoctor,
I don’t care what Cotch says, I will not want Coles.
-
RJ
100 % dead on balls accurate….then he dropped a pass in Seattle in 07 when one win could have put us in the playoffs…no to Coles
-
Some of you guys who complained that Coles was injury-prone for missing 4 games over NINE years would rather take a guy that has missed 20 games over the past TWO years!!!!!!
Makes sense to me.
-
I meant 08

spin
I agree with you but I dont want either…In fact like SackDance has said, put JCo in the slot and use Braylon and Clowney on the outside in 3WR sets…
Then take a wideout with our 4th or 5th rounder….I dont believe in drafting a WR #1 unless he is of the Andre or Calvin Johnson type mode
-
The ideal solution would be to add a tall WR on the outside and slide Cotchery to the slot on 3 WR sets. Cotchery has great hands, is more quick-than-fast, makes great cuts, and is a tough guy to tackle… but he is a small red zone target and struggles to separate downfield.

Eddie
I’m fine without either. I just don’t understand the injury reason for avoiding Coles.
I was a huge Clowney fan in the past, but…that ship has sailed IMO.
-
Missing games isn’t what people refer to when they talk about Coles. They mean that he played injured and it negatively impacted his play and the team’s offense.
-
I would rather give Woodhead a chance at slot, than Curtis, more upside, less money.
-
I liked coles because he was tough but he was injury prone he just played through it every chance he got.
-
I still think Clowney could turn out to be a good pro. What about Aundrae Allison? I think he could breakout as well.

Brendan
I’m not a Coles lover but I do feel aa need to support a guy that I think is being unfairly dissed. I’ll take a guy that missed four games over nine years and plays hurt over a guy that missed 20 games over 2 years.
You do realize that the coaches have the ability to sit a player if they think the injury will negatively impact the team, right? To criticize the player for “playing hurt” makes no sense to me.
-
spindoctor,
I love your incredibly obvious statements. Coaches decide who plays? Get outta here.
If they tried to sit Coles when he was hurt how do you think he would handle that? The guy is a grade A complainer and would air his grievances in public, as he has done in the past. He’s never happy, not a positive guy, and his skills have diminished. I like Curtis’ skills if he’s healthy better than Coles.
-
Big Katt
100 % agree…Allison was one of Rex’s favorites before he went down to a knee injury…the guy can run and if he comes back healthy might be able to make an impact
-
no harm in signing this guy…I’ll bet it will be done by Monday
-
neither
-
I think he’d be a good signing. His injuries were all minor and if he’s medically cleared then they should sign him. Coles would be a good signing also…Either of them are fine with me…
-
I dont want any of these bumbs. I’m still waiting for the Jets to sign a legit safety. I’m not worried about D-End either, because the players we have are more than capable for the system we play. We need pass rushers and a safety.
-
I wouldn’t be mad at a Curtis signing. When healthy, he combines pretty good speed with sure hands. That first year, he was dirty that first year with the iggles. I remember that game where he had like 3 touchdowns, he couldn’t be stopped. I’m not sure coles really has that explosive big-play potential like Curtis does.
-
sign him and draft Shipley for when he gets injured in week 8
-
I completely disagree Brendan. How can you not love what Coles gave to this team. Playing hurt, making big catches. If we can bring him back I say we do it now. He will be cheap and he has a couple of years left. I love what Coles did for this team and I totally think he is exactly what Rex looks for in a player. I say you start Coles and Edwards on the outside and put Cotchery in the slot.
-
Coles,
was just listening to NFL Network this AM , consensus was that Coles “disappointing” season was less a result of his efforts and more that Cincy was committed to run and Carson Palmers QB play, which we saw in the final and playoffs was less than spectacular. Coles dropoff was similar to Jerichos from the year before when they both had higher numbers and everyone here knows that was not due to JC losing anything<but the less than stellar play of our rookie QB and our emphasis on the run. Coles is a Jet, let him back and he'll Play Like One .
-
Cotchery missed four games and had a rookie QB, what was Coles excuse?
Cotch also had 300 more yards, a higher ypc average, more catches and more first downs. I would prefer we not compare a corpse to our best WR.
-
I read a lot of love around here about Shipley, but he will still be there in the third. A vet, not a rookie is needed for that 3rd receiver. I wish I had more confidencece in Brad Smith, but not at the WR spot. The intriguing one and another with a milder injury background is Alison. He has good hands, outstanding speed and he is not a pussy cat out there. He could be the sleeper.that Clowney has not become
-
BrendanCotchery was also the jets number one receiver, Coles didnt get thrown to 1/2 as much, , his drop off was not him , it was the system he was in and also a bad QB. Coles back he catches 60 or so passes for 700+ yds and 4-5 TD’s on fade routes.
-
There is waaaaay too much love for Shipley on this site…
You don’t waste a 2nd round pick on a career slot receiver who probably won’t be anything special. I bet he’ll be there in the 3rd because of name recognition, but in reality should be taken in the 4th-5th.
Take a pass rusher in the 1st (easy to say now but we don’t know who will be available), and take Chad or Reshard Jones in the 2nd.
I wouldn’t be opposed to taking Taylor Mays in the 1st either, but he probably won’t fall to us. As for the Roy Williams comparisons, I think the better comparison is to Sean Taylor (RIP).

Trader Mike…I believe this fish needs some bait.
