As the Jets journey towards the draft in April, we here at TJB will be taking a look into prospects that could be on the Jets draft board. Today we will be taking a look at: Florida product, Riley Cooper [via Shawn M.]
Projected Round: Second or Third
Measurables: Stands at 6’3. Weighs in at 222 lbs.
Positives: Cooper possess very good size and equally good speed. His hands are very good as well. He is a decent route runner and can be a threat underneath or deep down the field. He is strong, physical and very tough and is willing to block for his teammates. He is also a very gifted athlete (was selected by the Texas Rangers).
Negatives: Cooeper lacks the elusivness you would like to see from a receiver in the open field. He needs some polish on his route running and didn’t truly maintain consistency until his senior season where he devoted himself to football and become one of Tim Tebow’s favorite targets – Cooper has been known to “disappear.”
The Bottom Line: I have to believe some team will take a chance on Cooper. The fact of the matter is, he is talented and gifted athlete that has the potential to become great however it will take some polishing before he is up and producing numbers that you would want to see. That being said while he is an intriguing prospect, I have to believe the Jets will look elsewhere considering they could probably use a guy who could come in right away … with Cooper you may need to be patient.

Drop me an e-Mail at tjb.weeks@yahoo.com if you want to see a particular player analyzed or shoot off some feedback.
UPDATE: As we approach the final few weeks before the draft, I will being to compile a master post of the PW’s and my own thoughts on what the Jets should do on draft day. If there is a prospect who you have not seen on here yet, I will need you to shoot me an e-Mail no later than April 15, 2010 in order for that player to “make the cut.”

Remember Gator fan talking here….but….
Riley Cooper (Tebow’s roomate) is under-rated. He was the Gator’s #1 WR last year and #2 in 08 to Louis Murphy (The #2 best 2009 NFL offensive rookie not playing QB.)
Riley can be had in the later runds as a poor man’s Jordan Shipley in the slot IMO. Don’t laugh. Louis Murphy was in the shadows of Percy Harvin and he had a great rookie year.
As mentioned above, Riley is also property of the Texas Rangers so buyer beware.
Fingers are crossed for Shipley…my stubborn mind is made up on who I want for slot receiver.
Cooper isn’t a bad option though…he probably should’ve pulled a Jeff Samardzija though.
gator alum here…
i’ve watched every game coop has played for the gators. he would be a great addition to our run blocking scheme from the slot our the outside (like bray bray, but even more committed to the task). he needs considerable work on route running, but he’s got great size and great speed. his hands are a little iffy.
definitely worth a flier in the later rounds if still available. GATOR BAIT!
Nice B Joe. Totally fogot to mention his blocking. Cooper prides himself in that area as well. And in the spread offense a good blocking WR is a necessity. Cooper is very physical and always carries a chip on his shoulder in the run/screen game.
Any word on WR Marcus Henry? This kid has been hanging around for 2 years on the practice squad. Any word on his development? What has been holding him back from earning playing time?
2nd or third rd? He will barely make the 3rd and thats of his alum alone.
This guy is as good or not better than Shipley .. amazing hands .. I would be very happy with this guy .. made Tebow look very good a number of times .. and great call C Low .. an excellent blocker
Gator Fan here too….although I do think Cooper could be enticing, he’s tall, fights for the ball and and has good ball skills, he’s not NFL fast, I view him in the TE/Possession reciever mold….and he does block really well
I love the rundown of draft prospects but I’d really like to see the Jets address the DT position in the draft. Fact of the matter, Jenkins is a huge question mark in 2010 and we saw the impact it had last year by not having a quality pass rusher. If all goes as planned, the secondary is pretty much lockdown but rush game is still suspect and doesn’t give them the best chance to win. It’ll be interesting to se how they play it but without address the DT position this team is really good but not great IMO.
