Andy Benoit, writing for Fifth Down wrote about what he saw on tape for the Jets in 2009, and as a result, what the team’s Top Five needs are. Bolded text belongs to Benoit’s and mine is italicized below it.
1. Defensive End
Mike DeVito improved over the course of 2009, but he’s still best suited for a rotation. Even if Marques Douglas returns (which is no guarantee), the Jets need an understudy who can spell Shaun Ellis.
My thoughts: Defensive End in the 3-4 sense. 4-3 ends can be 6’3″ 260 .. this is not that guy. The Jets need someone who’s about 6’4″+ and weights over 285 lbs. or in the case of a rookie, has the frame to support some more weight. They’re going to play with their hand down most of the time. DeVito did impress, but as Benoit points out, Marques Douglas isn’t currently on the team (and over 30), and both he and Shaun Ellis (also over 30) are getting on in years, they need some young talent
2. Speed Receiver
With no Leon Washington, Brad Smith is the only source of genuine speed offensively – and his speed comes in gimmicks like Wildcats and reverses. The Jets could use a traditional burner to stretch opposing defenses.
My thoughts: Au contraire. As far as ‘genuine speed’ the Jets actually have two guys who ran sub 4.4s in David Clowney (4.36) and Aundrae Allison (4.39). I think the problem is that their talent at receiver can’t catch up to their speed. So, if it’s purely about speed, then the team has some options. If it’s all-around game at receiver, then these guys are just placeholders until they upgrade the talent. Between both Clowney and Allison, they’ve not shown the team the physical skills and consistency needed on a play in and out basis. These two guys might duke it out for a roster spot, but for a run-heavy team, it’s hard especially as we saw down the stretch with Clowney,
3. Linebacker
The starting four is stellar, but depth is nonexistent. Gholston is the only backup LB who was drafted. This scheme doesn’t need stars, just athletes.
My thoughts: Gholston is the elephant in the room, of course. Jamaal Westerman might be a find from last year as a UDFA, and maybe Ryan feels confident in finding backup talent off the street with his first four so good. A mid or late round draft wouldn’t be a bad choice, but I’d aim for a player who can play inside first. With Gholston, the team might be hesistant to try and draft an OLB high until after this year, when it becomes much more palatable to cut the former sixth pick.
4. Offensive Lineman
A versatile veteran would be a nice resource if one of the five starters were to be injured. Wayne Hunter sees time as a sixth lineman in running situations, but he doesn’t have the package of skills to be an everydown player.
My thoughts: I agree with his assessment of Hunter … at least as a backup Tackle. While there’s been a few instances of Damien Woody having to come off the field, I”ve never been impressed with Hunter as a the team’s RT during those stretches, he’s too easily beat around the edge and doesn’t seem to have the right footwork in that role. I’d be less concerned with Hunter as a Guard, but he’s also now 28 years of age. We know what he is at this point. If the Jets are going to sign a vet or draft a player on the line, it should be a backup swing tackle.
5. Safety
Brodney Pool was brought in essentially to replace Kerry Rhodes. If Pool can stay healthy, he could start ahead of Eric Smith. But concussions have hindered Pool. Smith is more equipped to come off the bench, and James Ihedigbo may actually be the better option anyway. Normally this personnel would suffice. But in Rex Ryan’s system, the safety position carries unusual significance. New York should take a stab at developing a potential star.
My thoughts: Unless the team gets someone else in the draft, and maybe even so, the more I think about the safety spot, the more I could see that Jim Leonhard becomes the full time “Ed Reed” role. I think it comes down to what Ryan values more in that role … speed or knowing the defense. Pool, Smith and Digs are plus run stoppers, maybe they play the 46 role more then? Seems to make sense to me … can’t wait to see …

Sean Ellis is my homeboy

ramble914
im with you on that bro,
-
Yeah, i’m starting to feel the same as you guys with Odrick..
-
Odrick is not what this team needs. They need a pass rusher. Not a DE.
-
2. Speed Receiver
I think a really good slot receiver would be better. Braylon can run like a Gazelle, and stretch defenses. Of the receivers who will be available in the later ropunds, I would love Jordan Shipley. We would have to take him in the second round, if he lasts that long, because he won’t make it past the top of the third round.3. Linebacker
Wouldn’t be at the top of my list unless it’s for a Will-LB like Sergio Kendle, or Brandon Graham, both of which we have no chance at unless we move up.4. Offensive Lineman
This is where some compensatory picks would have come in handy. Alas, we’ll have to use a 6 or 7 round pick on one.5. Rashad Jones would fit the bill, however we’ll probably have to use our 2nd rounder on him, so the choice is Shipley or R. Jones. We should be so lucky to have those choices.
-
Our depth at line is fine, we have Pouha, Jenkins, Devito, and Ellis. We don’t need to spend a high draft pick on another lineman. Rex only carried 4 or 5 lineman most of the year anyway. Nickel corner, Safety, or Outside linebacker would be my only three choices in the first round.
-
Bassett,
I agree, but I also think that Jenks returning is that added push already. There are pass rushers abound in that late first-early 2nd area and I would be very upset if the Jets didn’t address this need with a guy like Jerry Hughes or Sergio Kindle and took Greg Hardy instead in the 4th or 5th. The defensive line was not the issue last year, the pass rush was.
-
Brendan,
Jenkins hasn’t palyed a full season for us yet. And now is coming off major knee surgery, and is a year older. Ellis is very good but also on the wrong side of 30. The other guys are good backups, nothing more.
I also believe we will wind up with Adalius Thomas, who will play the Sam, and Pace will move to the Will. We need to control the LOS, and a big, fast DE will do the trick.
-
I agree, lets not get ahead of ourselves with Jenkins returning fully. How many 350 lb’s veterans do you know who returned fully from a blown knee.
-
On Safety- Been saying for a while now that i can see Leonhard playing FS- looks like it might happen! If Leonhard is playing FS and Pool can play FS/SS, Digs SS, and Smith SS- do we really need to add a Safety?- especially early in the draft! If we do add a safety early- read the other day that Morgan Burnett for Georgia Tech ran a sub 4.4 and he is a top candidate too in the 2nd to early 3rd.
-
I’d love to see them get Odrick, too, but if they can’t trade up, there is no way he gets past the Pats.
-
ramble let’s rumble. God, apologies for the cornyness of that jokes. I’m embarrassed.
Anyway, Jenks didn’t a full season the first go-round because Mangini ran him into the ground by playing him every down. Rex was keeping Jenks fresh (and highlight-full) by giving him plenty of rest in games and then Ellis ran into him and pop! When Jenks tore his other ACL he came back to have an All-Pro season. I don’t worry about him coming back strong, in his owns words he’s a “freak of nature who heals faster than normal human beings”.
Ellis is still chugging along, so until I see him falter for a season, I am confident in him.
Pouha and Devito aren’t merely backups.
I’m not saying they’re both top 10 DT’s like this site does, but they’re still both very good and still improving. I don’t worry about them or the D-line because Rex’s bread and butter is D-line. Look at his players in Balt. Aside from Ngata they’re all nobodies. Don’t waste a high pick on a DE when Rex could find Joe Schmoe in round 5 and turn him into a Pro Bowler.
-
I don’t really weight safeties 40 time to high.
Ability to read the offense > a 40 time.
You can be the fastest safety in the world but if you are getting a late jump on every play then where’s the advantage?
-
“ramble let’s rumble. God, apologies for the cornyness of that jokes. I’m embarrassed.”
The effort is appreciated.
-
Jet needs in a nut shell Marshall, Sharper, Odrick and 1 corner draft or trade!
-
Oh and Coles
-
If we come out of the first round with a solid OLB or a DE, I’ll be happy.
It’s just that I love having the #1 Defense in the NFL (god, its great to say thay), and I know the way to keep it that way is to over-power the other team at the point of attack on both sides of the ball.
It’s all about the trenches!
-
ramble we agree on that, it’s all about the trenches.
I guess my overall point is that I think we need some youth/depth at the line, but not an impact player this year, so I don’t want to use a first round pick on a guy who will mainly occupy blocks and not much else.
-
We need another Calvin Pace
When you run a 3-4 you need two OLB’s that can rush the passer standing up and drop in coverage. B Thomas, as hard as he plays, is not the other option you need to run a GREAT defense….notice I said GREAT, not good…
The guy we bring in doesnt have to be DeMarcus Ware or Merriman 3 years ago…just be Calvin Pace
The Jets should look for this guy earlier come draft day
-
Am I and Brendan the only Jet fans that dont think we need a De in the 1st round?
DE’s do not get to the QB in Rex’s system. Outside of Ngata (who can play DT and DE) can someone name a legit top pick that played for the Ravens under Rex?
I am not saying we dont need a DL in this draft. i just think a DE picked in round 1 is not the way to go.
OLB, S, OL, DL, WR/RB in that order
-
Awesome picture of Jim Leonhard.

I dont want one either. I want a pass rushing DE/OLB hybrid
But I dont want to take a WR if Odrick or Danny Williams is sitting there at 29
-
Wow I have to stop typing so fast….my grammar and spelling has become atrocious
-
Guys,
I think we need to follow the same formula that Rex did at the Ravens. Draft a DT/NT to play DE such as Dan Williams or the kid from Syracuse?
What do YOU THINK BENT?Thanks, Charles
-
AKA Drew,
The thing I like about Odrick is that at 6-5 and 300 lbs, he has the frame to bulk up to 330 lbs, and play NT at some point. I think he would give us a lot of versatility on the DL.
Of course if Tanny moved up to say the 11th pick and snagged Dan Williams, I wouldn’t mind that either.
-
Jim Leonhard is such a bro
-
Thanks for posting this article. I disagree with most of my fellow Jetsblog readers. I thought the writer nailed it. This is the best analysis of our needs yet.
While I may disagree with the order, the writer does not say the needs are listed in order. Given our restrictions on UFAs and low draft slot, even if they are in order, it makes no difference. We can only address the needs that we can.
I really hope our first two picks project as starters, this year if necessary, in any of these five areas of need.

Great pic of Leonhard going for the ball even without a helmet, just goes to show how much of a warrior he is.
-
Do u think Jesus would be avalible to us in the 1st rd? Lol
-
I dont think taking a first round D-Lineman is what we need. Nor do I think that is what the Jets FO is thinking. As I said on another post i think the Jets FO is thinking how do we make this offense better.
Im thinking unless Odrick blows the Jets away Dez Bryant has a better chance of being in Green and White than Jared Odrick. -
If Ghost is moving back to DE then We should just trade down and go Safety & corner round 2 .. Sighn Kevin Curtis .. Let Rex find a pass Rusher/Punter in the later rounds..
Question: I wanted Odrick a while back but have kinda chanded my mind .. Can someone tell me the difference between him & Potty because I can’t find one … & also aside from Keels being his agent what’s wrong with drafting Mt.Cody ..
-
Is clowney a good receiver? I am confused..he is amazing in the preseason, and then doesn’t even start. What gives? Is it his attitude? I keep thinking the JETS are getting him ready for greatness, and then he disappears.
-
CORRECTION
“I dont think taking a first round D-Lineman isn’t what we need” -
My first choice would be getting an OLB in the draft, but I would be very happy if we got Odrick. What some people are overlooking is the fact that Odrick CAN get to the QB. Pouha and Devito are pretty good run stuffers, but they don’t generate any pass rush. Odrick reminds me a little bit of Ellis. He is good against the run and the pass. Its very difficult to find 3-4 DEs who have the ability to get the the QB. Odrick, Jenkins, and Ellis, would make a very good front 3. The other thing that I like about Odrick is that he has the ability and size to play 4-3 DT on passing downs. My first choice would be Brandon Graham, but I would be very happy with Odrick.
-
We NEED a Will linebacker. Period. I really think that is our only need. We could use some more depth at DE, WR, and CB/FS, but our only NEED is a pash rushing outside linebacker. We are great at pressuring the QB, but we need to get some sacks this year.
I think it would be ok to draft Odrick, he is better at getting to the QB then most 3-4 ends, but only if Graham and Hughes are off the board. If we take Od while Hughes is still available i would be soo pissed. Hughes is the next Elvis Dumervil. He’s gonna be a beast and i hope we get him.
-
I’ve been pounding the table on drafting a WILL/DE hybrid pass rusher as the no. 1 need for a while now. A pure DE just isn’t a “need” because the Jets already have good depth on the DL and Rex’s system isn’t that structured, so he moves around his NTs and DEs. Plus, I think Pitoitua deserves some PT and he is 6-8, 310 lbs…bigger than Odrick. And, there’s been chatter that Gholston might play some DE. If Douglas comes back, the DEs are Ellis, DeVito, Douglas, Pitoitua and Gholston. Why add Odrick to the mix when the Jets don’t have a WILL/DE hybrid pass rusher on the team?
As for the other needs listed by Benoit, I generally agree, except I’d add in RB, especially an RB/FB hybrid that can play the LeRon McClain role on the Jets and replace T-Rich next year.
-
IF you draft the WILL of the future, Brian Thomas could move back to DE, this is an option. He plays the run just fine.
And they still need a PUNTER.
-
If Thomas could put on 15-20 pounds he’d actually be almost ideal size for that spot WOJF.
-
I think the Jets should pick up Joey Porter. If we want instant pass rush, Porter is the man. Within Ryan and Pettine’s scheme, and having Pace playing opposite him — I can see Porter with double digit sacks. We give up nothing but salary, to get him. Then, we can go into the draft looking to pick the best player available, at 29.
I do think Safety is important, as Pool is just a big hit away from the Emergency Room. I have no idea why they think he can overcome multiple concussions (see Wayne Chrebet & Al Toon).
I wouldn’t take Kevin Curtis, he is not getting any younger and, he is coming off multiple injuries. We need healthy players, not future injured reserves.
I think Clowney is a talented player who is a victim of Brian Schottenheimer.
I wouldn’t forget about Ropiti Pitoatua. He has shown flashes.
-
Can someone tell me the DE that plays in the 3-4 that actually gets to the QB? I dont care how good Oldrick….He is not getting to the QB in a 3-4 let alone ours.
Now is you tell me Oldrick is going to be Richard Seymour than maybe but he is not that type of player or rated nearly as high as he was.
We just do not need a DE in round1 we just dont. it goes against everything Rex does.
-
AKA…Drew,
Shaun Ellis gets to the QB.
-
Drew,
Aside from Ellis, who we can only count somewhat given Rex’s hybrid 3-4/4-3 scheme….Seymour, Dockett, Pryce/Ngata (who play in the similar hybrid scheme), and Kenyon Coleman.
That’s a very, very short list of impact pass rushers from 3-4 DE spots. The chances Odrick lights it up and gets a bunch of sacks are very low, about as low as Kenyon Coleman’s sack totals.
-
^
I am talking about legit pass rushers. Guys who you could rush 3 men with and still generate pressure because he’s in there. Randy Starks and Cullen Jenkins, while posting good sack #’s last year, aren’t like that. The majority of their sacks were caused by pressure from elsewhere and good coverage. -
Brendan,
Ellis had 8 sacks last year in Mangini’s scheme. I don’t think his ability to get to the QB has anything to do with Rex. He has been a good pass rusher throughout his career.
-
I mean 2 years ago
-
I agree with Harvlis about getting Joey Porter because he would have an instant impact yet at the same time I would also like to draft Hughes or Grahm if available because they both seem to be the anti-Gholston with also a lot of upside. I think if they’re not available or if Terrence Cody is around we should take Mt. Cody, a player of his size and capabilities doesn’t come along very often. However I feel that the Chargers who are a pick ahead of us will take him because they have a hole at NT after cutting Jamal Williams. I think taking a DE in the first round is not neccesary because there will be alot of DEs we can use in the draft and since they’re job is to basically take up blockers and make space for the LB’s we should focus on getting more explosion in our D in the first round. If there aren’t any passrushers though I say either get a Mt. Cody, Mays or a slot WR
-
I agree that a rush OLB is out biggest need though. Graham would be my first choice. I also like Hughes and I wouldn’t mind Kindle either. If none of those guys are available though, I think Odrick would be a great pick.
-
- K Coleman get to the QB? In what league?
- Ngata had 2 sacks last year so i am not sure how that counts as getting to the QB in the 3-4
- Dockett has had 10 sacks total in the last 2 years.C’mon guys…. the role of a DE in the 3-4 (especially ours) is not to get to the QB. Again I am not saying we dont need a DE I am saying we dont need one in round 1.
Rex has proven he can win games and be a great defense with marginal to good players at DE….not 1st round picks that make alot of money
-
Also to Ellis…He hated to 3-4 for years before finally getting to the QB recently. Ellis was a much better pass rusher as a 4-3 DE. But he does a nice job in his role now
-
Stop speculating! Under Rex our defense will be just fine. He made the jets the number one defense in the NFL without Kris Jenkins, who by the way was playing at an all pro level. You have to have confidence in our scouts they have been excellent. anybody would have chosen Gholston. He was a beast in college and if you look at him, he is an athletic freak.
-
Drew,
I hope you realize that the Coleman addition was a joke.
Dockett is a legit pass rusher, he’s had a 9 sack season and 7 sack season in the past 3 years.
Ngata is like Jenks in that his sack #’s may never be high, but he definitely knows how to rush the passer.
But I’m agreeing with you that 3-4 DE’s don’t generate a lot of the pressure.
-
Brendan
I know you were joking about Coleman…. I only used Dockett’s last 2 years becasue he was in a 4-3 when he had his 9 sack year. Hes been in a 3-4 the last 2 under Wiz…..
Ngata def knows how to get there….but he just dosent. Plus he is a freak at 350. Oldrick is not him and never will be.
-
Carlos Dunlap from Florida. 6’6, 295. The guy had a stupid DUI before the SEC championship, and it cost them big, but late first round could definitely be worth it. The guy RETURNED KICKS for his high school team. can you imagine trying to tackle that on kickoff!?!
After the Ghost I’m not interested in Big 10 D-Linemen. At all.
On another note, with Brandon Spikes running a slooooow 40, he might fall far. If we could scoop him with mid round pick, i’d be interested. he did nothing but make huge plays and big time stops for 4 years at Florida. David Harris isn’t going anywhere, but we could groom Spikes to step in for Bart Scott in a season or 2.
-
Again….we can debate this until the draft…History shows Rex will not draft a DE in the 1st round unless they are 330+ and can play DT also….Dan Williams is the only guy not Oldrick…….
If we draft him I would be shocked…….shocked! We can find a guy in the middle rounds to fight with the rest of the good players wea lready have to generate “some” pass rush and stop the run. We dont need to drop big dollars on that guy in the 1st.
-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
TO
DUNLAP
-
why so down on Dunlap?
-
He’s overrated. He takes plays off. He doesn’t play hard. He doesn’t love the game. He loafs when the play isn’t run to his side. He’s on the “All-World Athlete That Doesn’t Care” All-Star Team.
-
AKA…Drew and Dylan both have very good points.
While there are some 3 – 4 teams that rely on their Dline to generate pressure, I think we all understand that there are different ways of playing the 3 – 4 (look at Parcells’ Teams, Wade Phillips, Belichick’s system, Marty Schottenheimer’s teams and Rex’s D), I for one believe Rex is looking to put together a squad closer to what he had in Baltimore, what the Steelers and Cowboys have and what the Patriots used to have. That is a Dline that can occupy and push back Olines (collapsing the pocket) and if he can get sacks from his Dline that is a bonus.
Furthermore Rex has shown time and time again that he can find good Dlinement off of waivers and free agency and through trade. If the team does decide to address Dline in the draft there are many potential targets the team can get in the later rounds. While not popular ESPN names there are guys like Cam Thomas (UNC) Jones (Syracuse) Houston (Texas), who could easily fill the job at RDE.
Aquiring an Elite Rush OLB isn’t as easily found. Frankly I am not ruling out the possibilty of trading our 1st for a proven player or 2 on draft day. There are way more teams like the Cheifs, Broncos, Browns, Seahawks, Buccs and Oakland who are looking for players who fit their schemes and to build around. While we are in win now mode and are looking for those Elite Calibur players. -
Eddie Digio,
“DE’s do not get to the QB in Rex’s system. Outside of Ngata (who can play DT and DE) can someone name a legit top pick that played for the Ravens under Rex?”
How about Trevor Pryce who currently plays for the Ravens. He was drafted in 1997 by the denver broncos with the 28th pick overall. He was a two time superbowl champion as well. Interesting…..
-
Rex got Price when he was 30/31. It’s not like he drafted the guy himself.
-
For Shaun Ellis, 30 is the new 20. I’m not worried

What are you talking about???

While Rex was incharge of the D only Ngata was drafted in the first round. He was the dline coach when Reed, Suggs, McAlister were drafted in the first round, Ray Lewis and Rolle were there before Rex came on the team, Kelly Gregg came from the Bengals, Landry (4th rounder under REX) Scott undrafter, Adalius was a 6th rounder
-
Rex’s Defense has been built mostly on first round players are skill positions only Ngata and Suggs (the two times they were a 4-3) are first round Dlinement.
-
Last year, I said that the top priority for this offseason would be acquiring a quality CB. And that move—the first major move of the offseason—has already been done.
Picking up Cromartie was low risk/high reward. And if Rex can get him to play anywhere near his potential, then we should be set at corner.
But a new priority has opened up in the wake of the Rhodes trade. We need a quality safety. Yes, Pool may turn out to be a great pick-up, but he’s just one more concussion away from retirement. And though Eric Smith is a solid blitzer and tackler, he can’t cover. Which means he isn’t a starter.
So I think it’s likely we draft a quality safety. And if it’s in the second round, I hope we go for Reshad Jones.
We probably won’t draft a safety in the first round unless someone exceptional falls to us, like Earl Thomas (which would be great, but seems unlikely).
(Actually, I’d love to trade up in the first round for Eric Berry—a solid blitzer, solid in coverage, a solid run stopper, and a solid tackler, who can hit—but this seems very unlikely.)
Other priorities:
—A pass rushing LB.
—A quality punter.
—A quality kicker.
—Depth at the O line.
—A RB/FB
to be mentored by T-Rich this year
(and to replace him next year).—Depth at the D line.
-
I havent heard a peep about the Jets being even remotely interested in Porter.
-
It’s like no one is interested int he guy. I don’t get it.
-
Ben
Berry is better than solid- I think he is going to be on par with a guy like Ed Reed!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Brendan and JR
Thats what is scaring me…I saw him play and I think the guy has a lot left, especially as a situational pass rusher…maybe its because he is bat s#it crazy…I dunno
-
Eddie DiGio-
I agree—I think Berry is a MONSTER. He’s the kind of player who should be solid in the league from day one. And he looks to be All Pro early in his career.
Which is why I’d love to see us trade up in the first round to sign Berry, even though I think it’s highly unlikely (we’d have to trade WAY up to get him).
-
Eddie,
aaaaand bat s#it crazy players are something Rex….doesn’t like?
Haha he seems like a Rex guy to me.
-
Marvel,
Since you asked, the difference between Odrick and Potty:
Potty: posted 116 tackles, 19 TFL and 8.5 sacks in four seasons at Washington State
Odrick: posted 98 tackles, 23.5 TFL, and 12.5 sacks in 3 seasons at PSU (didn’t play as a freshman)
So Odrick averaged more tackles per season, more TFls and sacks overall. Also take into account that Odrick played in the Big 10 and Potty played in the considerably weaker PAC 10.
Now you also asked about Mt. Cody. While Keels is the main reason why I want no part of him, the best description I have heard about him came from an NFL scout that was on one of the local Miami radio stations this morning. “He is a 1 to 2 down player in today’s NFL” Since most teams have abandoned the run (except Jets and Ravens) and the NFL is now the most pass happy it has ever been, a guy like Cody has less value since he is plain and simple a run stopper and has no prayer of getting to the QB in passing situations. He had a total of 1/2 sack over the past two seasons.
-
Brendan
Yea man, I dont get why they havent brought the guy for at least a visit
I think whoever doesnt get pass rusher in the draft goes hard after Porter
and if we dont get one come April and Porter is still out there, Im going to join you in campaigning for JP…
-
Convert Bart Scott to Outside LB and Draft a Inside LB that can cover a fast tight end..
-
ok well porter is headed to the dessert so thats that. i also dont think we have enough picks this year and hope someone falls so maybe we can pick up a 2nd and 3rd for our 1st and still basically get what we need. i disagree that rex can win with anyone. while its true that he’s had alot of success with unheralded picks and undrafte fa’s, all his guys have skillsets in common. this is a rare draft some rare depth…you’re basically looking at 2nd and 3rd talent in the 4th and 5th and definately some good value in the low 2′s. here’s how i see the needs :
1- depth in the trenches, ideally a tackle that can play guard as well and a de that can slide inside on passing downs
2- a solid cover corner, rex must have these and investing a 1st or 2nd in a kareem jackson or kyle wilson or darren mcourty may prove to be most beneficial
3- receiver, either a slot guy in the mold of a shipley or a deep threat and big target like thomas from gt and slide cotch into the slot n 3 receiver sets
4- olb, gholston is still tough to swallow but you need to maybe spend a 4th on the guy (name escapes me, coulda been a 1st but got hurt early) and develop him as a situational but thomas can do everything but rush the passer
5- safety, definately need a playmaker and although its not a “pressing” need, if a top guy like thomas falls or we can trade up for him or berry we should definately do that as that would potentially set up our secondary for years to come….and a secondary is key to the defense
6- special teams, PUNTER, maybe even for a late rounder if there are any who are worth it. since the jets wont really have any openings for a rookie to start most should be able to contribute on special teams which were a problem last year after the trade for braylon

1. Defensive End
“The Jets need someone who’s about 6′4″+ and weights over 285 lbs. or in the case of a rookie, has the frame to support some more weight.”
How about someone 6-5 and 300lbs, like Jared Odrick?
