As the Jets journey towards the draft in April, we here at TJB will be taking a look into prospects that could be on the Jets draft board. Today we will be taking a look at: Georgia product, Geno Atkins [via Clint N.]

Projected Round: Third
Measurables: Stands at 6’1. Weighs in at 293 lbs.
Positives: Atkins gets some of the best penetration out of the DT’s in his class and utilizes a wide variety of moves to get the QB. He gets off the snap well and prepare himself well for the double move inside. Atkins is very athletic he is a very balanced runner that has no issue changing his direction quickly. He can fit into tight spices and fly towards the action blowing right past blockers if need be. Atkins is a very sound tackler that can deliever big hits sometimes — during college he often made tackles for a loss of yardage. He is strong and has monsterous calves.
Negatives: Atkins hands aren’t always as active as they should be and he can get neutralized by a strong, straight ahead blocker. He won’t always focus on the action and does not always read blocks well.
The Bottom Line: Atkins seems like a true Rex Ryan type of guy to me. Despite his size, he plays with a lot of heart and as a result is one of the best in his class. He will certainly need to learn how to concentrate better and determine ways in which he won’t get pushed around so much but overall he is a very good piece that could add some fresh meat to the aging defensive line while getting some tips from Rex and Big Jenks.
Atkins Highlights:
The footage of Atkins playing is in short supply but I did find something that might allow you to get to know him better (personally) …

I anticipate that some may try to compare him with Marques Douglas….he’s not a pick that would be considered at this point in time necessary. I imagine a variety of talent from different positions with him at the same area in the draft…..Not bloody likely. I’m sick of the D-rob fanatics, the majority of the comparisons don;’t live up to the comparison. They few that turn out to be good are mediocre at best. I thought Peria Jerry would be a good one, but got injured in rookie campaign. Other than Rod Coleman (disappeared) and Tommy Harris (degenerative) no one has come close to Sapp.

What position would he play for the Jets? He strikes me as Tampa Two type tackle rather than a two-gapper.

think this guy can lose a little weight and become a 3-4 de

I dont think were going to go with this guy… i wouldn’t be surprised to see us go pretty high on a conerback if you can land a jem in the second or maybe trade up into the third i wouldn’t be opposed to it if you can get a guy to lock up the third man (sorry Dwight Lowrey) then our schemes can flourish much easier and we can blitz alot more
I personally can’t wait for the draft to be here.. each year i had and idea who we were most likely going to get but i have no clue this year because it’s such a deep draft… In Tanny We Trust..

Richard Seymour ~6’5″ 310lbs… one of the best 3-4 ends ever to play the game…

Any gumba with the name Geno MUST be a football player and therefore can always play on my team, doesn’t matter the position!!!
