Roster News: Jets Retain Clowney

by Bent on March 20th, 2010 at 5:08 pm

Aaron Wilson from NFP has confirmed:

The New York Jets held onto wide receiver David Clowney with an exclusive-rights qualifying offer.

Although this hasn’t been officially announced by the Jets, the deadline for them to extend an offer to him was over two weeks ago, since which time both Mike Tannenbaum and Clowney himself (via twitter) have been talking as if he is part of their plans, so this comes as no surprise. As the only Exclusive Rights Free Agent on the team, the Jets controlled his rights and were entitled to offer him a minimum level contract, with no other teams permitted to make him an offer.

This by no means guarantees his place on the team next season, as he could still be cut or traded with no financial penalties whatsoever.

Yet another hat tip to Mel…

  1. Let’s hope that when Rex says “nobody can cover the Clown” next year, he will be referring to the REGULAR season.

  2. avatar jlb0183 says:

Not really excited about it, but w.e @ least he can prob help on special teams, so does that mean that the Jets are done at looking for a 3rd reciever

  3. avatar jetmetvet says:

Should be good for about 2 bombs down the sideline this year, if used.

  4. avatar patpat says:

i dont think hes their 3rd WR option. Maybe right now, but I see them signing one last body. I hope curtis, but we’ll have to see. I see them either signing curtis, coles, or drafting a guy in the later rounds. I dont think mike t sees this as a priority, even though some think the opposite. if we do any of the three i mentioned ill be a happy camper.

im with spindoctor, this signing is irrelevant.

  5. avatar sexy rexy says:

clowney has stokley potential. too bad hes an idiot and a CLOWN.

  6. avatar JJets says:

as long as he can catch this is good

  7. avatar mkj13 says:

Will be good for some depth

  8. avatar hojo3 says:

Confused about something..Clowney tears irt up in the preseason, and disappears in reg season..can he make the jump to starter..keep waiting for him to “blow-up”

  9. avatar patpat says:

they dont give him a lot of reps once the regular season starts. why? i dont know.

maybe its just me but i rarely see him in during the regular season. maybe it has to do with his practices during the regular season, or maybe this is just all in my head.

i feel like it was the same way with the brett favre season too. he was always talking about getting his chance to catch a ball from him, waiting for the coaches to put him in.

  10. avatar J-Kay says:

Well… makes preseason more fun I guess

  11. avatar patpat says:

yea now that i think about it i think im right. i remember hearing he doesnt catch passes in practice, which makes the coaches weary of putting him in. he seems to make some pretty good catches on game day tho…

  12. avatar hojo3 says:

I just feel like he could be amazing, but hasn’t gotten the chance. Maybe he is not a Rex Ryan type player. Maybe this will be his year to shine. I believe he is the second fastest player in nfl behind Chris Johnson from the Titans.

  13. avatar Bent says:

He’s not a good route runner and has inconsistent hands, but guys that can get separation deep don’t grow on trees. He’s not too bad at blocking and – despite the image his twitter feed projects – I found him to be well spoken, thoughtful and dedicated.

  14. avatar jledowitz says:

listen guys 3 years in the league and nothing to show from it…i think its time we all move on….now lets get get jordan shipley in the second round and call it a day!

  15. avatar StopTheWildcat says:

3 years in the league? you know around last year’s draft time everyone was saying “lets not draft a WR, it takes atleast 3 years maybe more for them to develop”…so why isn’t this guy getting a chance?

  16. avatar nyckage says:

I think we should have tried to trade him, and kept, sSuckey, because Stuckey was a very good slot guy, and Clowney can’t play the slot for some reason

  17. avatar Bkkilla says:

shipley should b around in the fourth, miami has a erfa wr bess i think his name is he would b a great slot option if not retained by miami

  18. avatar Jets4life says:

Clowney is a joke that’s why his only to nicknames are; the clown and mr. Aguast. Here is how I see their draft. Rd 1 olb jerry Hughes rd 2 wr mardy gilyard rd 4 de e.j. Wilson rd 5 rb James starks rd 6 cb David pender rd 7 og alex parsons

  19. avatar BigKatt wants a ring says:

I love Clowney, the only reason he doesn’t do anything during the regular season is because he’s not in the games. On twitter he’s been talking about getting better this offseason, i hope he does and that he gets a crack at being our slot wr.

  20. avatar Tim says:

I really don’t understand all the hate for Clowney. If you’ll remember he took over J-Co’s spot against the Raiders and was tearing it up. Now, granted it was the Raiders, but c’mon, they still have Asomugha. Clowney can be just what we need, just give him more reps. Two deep threats in Edwards and Clowney? More reps will only help his consistency.

  21. avatar Harvlis says:

Clowney is a victim of Brian Schottenheimer’s weird offensive decisions. Not utilizing Clowney’s breakaway ability is just like his not utilizing Leon Washington or Dustin Keller properly. As soon as Schottenheimer is gone, or Clowney plays for someone who knows offensive football, Clowney will become a weapon.

  22. avatar brian311 says:

I don’t see him making the 53 man

  23. avatar hank/naples says:

    Bent:

“He’s not a good route runner and has inconsistent hands, but guys that can get separation deep don’t grow on trees.”

We can’t really afford two Bray, Bray’s and the field at the same time, can we?

  24. avatar CWPOST1993 says:

Give my man a chance .. It takes time to develop a young WR in this league. He has shown what he can do if given the chance. He hasn’t been used correctly in the passing scheme. This maybe his breakout year ala JC. Give him a shot ! Low risk high reward

  25. avatar hojo3 says:

I am all aboard the clowney bandwagon! Let’s see what he can do.

  26. avatar Bent says:

Clever, Hank, but (leaving aside the fact that Edwards IS a good route runner and also brings tremendous size and blocking to the table) that comment doesn’t really make sense. After all, it’s not like they can ever both drop the ball on the same play (barring some kind of bizarre ricochet).

Both guys are threats, so having them both in the game at the same time (as they did very effectively in Miami last year) gives Sanchez some good options. Hopefully both guys will do a better job of hanging onto the ball next year (assuming they end up on the team, of course.). To be fair to Clowney, he hasn’t had many in-game drops yet, although he had a few in preseason when he was actually getting to play.

  27. avatar rusty sanchez says:

this will be his 3rd year in the system and his 2nd year with sanchez so hopefuly this season he will play to his potential…not sure why he dont get thrown to seems like he hasnt much drops is it he dont get open or he is a bad route runner and is never in the place hes supposed to??

  28. avatar Revis Christ says:

i like clowney i compleytly agree shotty is using him sooo wrong same as leon and keller… we all know the xplosiveness leon has i think clowney has some of the same he is prob close to being top 5 fastest guys in the league

  29. avatar jvsvn says:

Keeping Clowney is a no brainer. Will he ever be a star? Maybe but it’s doubtful. But he does he does have some real skills and has shown improvement throughout his tenure with the Jets. It’s possible he could emerge as a real contibutor in his third season with the team. That does happen with young players sometimes, especially at receiver. At the very least, his speed means he has to be accounted for when he’s on the field. That’s not a bad asset for a #5 receiver. Keeping a guy like Clowney is also part of the Jet’s draft philosophy. That is to go into the draft with as few glaring holes as possible. Maybe the Jets are considering drafting a receiver, but keeping a player like Clowney means they don’t HAVE to draft one. Unless they plan to get a stud receiver in the early rounds, Clowney will probably contribute more next year than anyone they would get in round 4 or below. If he wound up as the #5 receiver again we would be fine. And remember, we got Clowney off the Packers practice squad. That’s a draft choice that we got to use for another purpose (like trading up for Revis or Harris, etc.). Not having to replace him right now means more flexibility in how we use this year’s draft choices.

  30. avatar junior says:

I like this move just wish he could return kicks as well

  31. avatar GANGGREEN says:

How many times did Clowney even see the field..Not many..But in the preseason were he got all his reps he did well overall..He’s grasping the system and is costing us an arm and a leg so why trade or release him.I agree he should be used as an explosive kick returner IF and a big If he can catch the ball consistently and not turn the rock over…And I agree with all of ya Keller and Leon are not used nearly enough..Shoot Keller was supposed to be a game cahnger in this offense when drafted and we all know what Leon can do given the opportunity….Schotty needs to start using the weapons he’s got let alone bringing in a big name free agent receiver or using a high draft pick on a receiver…How can anyone justify going after TATE in the draft when we don’t even use the weapons we have now effectively….

  32. avatar LMP23 says:

I never understood why he was never used either. He has great speed. Never made sense to me.

  33. avatar jledowitz says:

the problem with most jets fans, and i do it also, is that we look at our guys on the roster and think they are better then what they really are. if its wasnt for the jets i would bet my last 2 cents that clowney wouldnt even be in the league right now. so lets stop with the non sense and get real. they guy is a nobody and only is a somebody versus other nobodys. lets get shipley in here who actually can run routes and make people miss while catching everything in site. does wes welker blow past people?? no he just out monuvers them and thats what shipley will do. he would be our wes welker minus the injuries. i bet come opening day clowney is bagging groceries.

  34. avatar GANGGREEN says:

I ment Clowney isn’t costing us an arm and a leg..

  35. avatar Randy says:

Well the talent is definitly there…But it never seems to translate into the regular season.

In Madden 10 though Im a Beast with Clowney. As the 3rd receiever he is almost impossible to stop playing the slot with his speed.Almost every game I play with the Jets he ends up gaining plus 150 yards receieving on Average.

Its just a shame its only a game and the Jets cant gameplan from Madden Games :(

  36. avatar JerryB says:

Clowney is a one trick pony. When he’s in the the game the DBs know he’s going deep. If he can’t run a crisp route tree by the end of pre-season, he’s gone.

  37. avatar hank/naples says:

    Bent:
“Clever, Hank, but (leaving aside the fact that Edwards IS a good route runner and also brings tremendous size and blocking to the table) that comment doesn’t really make sense”

Sorry Bent, but you are wrong AGAIN!!

I can get you a few “Opinions’ other than mine to tell you you are wrong!! But for now, I will only give you two:

“I do it (trade Edwards) because Edwards too often ran the wrong pass patterns, making his quarterbacks look bad by throwing to the wrong spots”: Terry Pluto, Cleveland Plain Dealer Oct. 10, 2009.

    And,

“Edwards was continually a drag on the offense with dropped passes, ‘ poor route running’, and an attitude that indicated he’d rather be anyplace but Cleveland.” : Mike McLain Cleveland Tribune Chronicle, Oct. 8, 2009

Like I said, we are really rolling the dice with two BRAY, BRAY’s on the field at the same time!!

    Pass the Roll Aides!!

  38. avatar jvsvn says:

Nobody is saying that Clowney is great. He’s a depth player. The issue is why get rid of him right now. All 53 players on the roster aren’t going to be pro bowlers. The Jets only threw the ball something like 16 – 18 times a game last year. How many receptions do you think the #5 receiver is going to get in that situation. Almost none and that’s exactly what happened with Clowney. As have news for everybody, the #5 receiver is not going to see the field too much this year either. As for Keller, he did have TDs in all 3 playoff games so maybe his time has come. I agree that we would be a better team with a top level slot receiver. But I don’t think that’s important enough to spend a 1st or 2nd round pick on this year. We have bigger needs for a pass rusher and a safety and more depth on the OL and DL. If Shipley (or somebody similar) is around in the 4th round, then I’m OK with it. It’s just a question of priorities. If we can solidify the pass rush, the safety spot, and bring in top level depth for the OL and DL we’ll be in great shape even if Clowney winds up as the #5 receiver again.

  39. avatar War Machine says:

The problem is he is not a slot wr. He is an outside wr. When he comes in, shotty should put Cotch in the slot and let Clown stetch the the def. Shotty dosent know what hes doin.

  41. avatar BigKatt wants a ring says:

Shotty will be gone after we win the superbowl this year, so don’t worry.

  42. avatar k.c. says:

this HAS GOT to be the LAST year we toy/try this David Clowney EXPERIMENT. He has showed some SIGNS in the off/pre-season,but for SOME reason,NEVER during a REGULAR SEASON GAME!?? WHY?,I have NO idea, but it HAS to be SOMETHING!,right? Are we just HIDDING him from the rest of the NFL so they dont see how REALLY GOOD he is?? I’m drunk, and cant type/finish WHATEVER it was I was TRYING to say in this post so goodnight to ALL and as usual….J! E! T! S! JETS! JETS!! JETS!!!

  43. avatar k.c. says:

p.s. HANK, I can KIND OF see where your coming from, but as unfortunate as it may be,if players are unhappy playing somewhere, their production falls off completely. And I BELIEVE that to be the case with Braylon. THAT being said,IF he TRIES to pull that S%!T HERE,he will dissappear like a fart in the wind. Just from his college career and MOST of NFL career,I believe that he WANTS to be one of the best and will show it this year,HOPEFULLY! And if NOT,then good luck wherever you land.

  44. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Find me a coach or scout that says Braylon runs bad routes, not some writer who knows as much about running pass paterns as Hank does…

There is a difference between not being into the game or not running hard if you know you arent getting the ball and being able to do it when you feel like it…

At no point this season did any of the coaches or players question Braylon’s ability to run routes…you dont get as wide open as he does sometimes because although hes fast, he’s not Chris Johnson fast…

Listening to anyone from Cleveland is like your ex girlfriend that you dumped for a hotter chick tell people what a dirtbag you are

  45. avatar k.c. says:

ONE MORE THING…lol…(laughing at myself…this is horrible)…..I dont think that trading our first round pick (and third???) for Brandon Marshall. GOODNIGHT!

  46. avatar k.c. says:

    is a BAD thing…..(see above)

  47. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

    k.c

Braylon can run devastating routes when he is into it…

He should be doing that all the time but any proof needed go to the San Diego Div playoff game and watch Braylon completely spin Cromartie around on a 15 yard dagger route

  48. avatar Bent says:

Yep, maybe he ran poor routes in Cleveland. I wouldn’t know about that because I didn’t watch too many Browns games before this season. His route running for the Jets was fine, so I assume his struggles in Cleveland were due to a lack of effort rather than ability.

The point I was making applies even if he is a bad route runner, but you seem to have ignored that.

Also, I resent the comment “You are wrong AGAIN” which suggests I am wrong all the time, whereas I can’t remember you ever proving me to be wrong.

  49. avatar Bent says:

(Other than that time I agreed with you that Trusnik was good, then did some research and discovered he had played poorly.)

  50. avatar ramble914 says:

Isn’t that when Hank was saying that trading Trusnik would ruin the team?

  51. avatar hank/naples says:

    Bent:

Any one that reads the TJB wih any regularity knows that you are very knowledgable, and on the most part, objective in your comments. Also, based on our past discussions, you must be well aware by now that altough we often differ on perspectives and opinions, I have always shown respect!!!

That said, I find it kind of strange that you are now taking a unfrienly position by telling me you resent my comment that “You are wrong again”.

During all our disccussions, I had assumed they were always of a friendly, challenging and competitive manner. Judging from the tone in your comment It appears that it was I that was ” wrong again”.

Just one last comment.. You mentioned that you can’t remember where I ever proved you to be wrong. You know, you are right again, because Lord know i have tried Many, Many times with out success!!

I think it’s funny because I can’t seem to remember where you have ever allowed me to be right,

  52. avatar Bent says:

Hank – Don’t mind me, I just got out of the wrong side of bed this morning!

I always enjoy your comments and you provide a ton of interesting material for this site in terms of articles that you provide quotes from.

I’ve defended you a ton on this site and not just because I enjoy your contributions. If I ever attempt to correct or question you it’s just to try to get you to see things from a different perspective to try to explain the thought process behind a decision, not to make myself out to be smarter. I freely admit that I don’t know what I’m talking about half the time!

I always enjoy our discussions and look forward to the next one!

  53. avatar hank/naples says:

    ramble914:

Is it a coincidence that the Jets Special Teams sank from being special to so, so while the Browns Special Teams climbed to NUMBER.ONE ( 1 ) In the NFL. ?

I mean players like Trusnik and Elam and Constanzo make a difference, no?

  54. avatar hank/naples says:

    Bent:

    Great!!! All is forgotten.

    Bring on the Lions then!!!(=^_^=)

  55. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

Hank absolutely has a point with Trusnick-

Its just that its not the MEGA deal he made it out to be- you can find a guy to replace a gunner if you do your homework and make it a priority in the off season

case in point, Laury is a good special teamer that can pick up the slack
