Jets Showing Interest in Terrence Cody

by Bassett on March 21st, 2010 at 10:30 am

The Jets have been paying close attention to Terrence Cody (AKA Mount Cody) the massive run stuffing Defensive Tackle from Alabama.

“I’ve been working really hard,” Cody told the National Football Post during a telephone interview Saturday afternoon. “When I came in at 348 pounds, it shocked a lot of people and I ran a better 40-yard dash.

“Day in and day out, I’m trying to get in better shape and keep the weight off and maintain my strength. This is the best shape I’ve been in since high school, but this is me getting into good football shape.”

The 6-foot-4 defensive lineman is scheduled to visit the Baltimore Ravens, the New York Jets and the San Diego Chargers. He’s regarded as the prototype run-stuffer for the 3-4 defense.

Because of concerns about his conditioning and stamina, there has been talk in NFL circles that Cody could go later in the first round.

Cody’s Pro Day was attended by every NFL team since the Crimson Tide feature several talented draft prospects.

It was attended by Jets coach Rex Ryan, New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin and Carolina Panthers coach John Fox.

Baltimore, San Diego and the Jets all pick in the mid to late 20s. While there were some serious concerns about Cody’s conditioning, he’s clearly taking steps to show that he’s trying.

Cody would be another interesting player for the Jets should be still be there at #29. While we all love Kris Jenkins, his ability to stay healthy is a concern, so someone like Cody could slowly work himself into the lineup … but imagine if both Cody and Jenkins were on the field at the same time? Sucks to be an interior offensive lineman.

His biggest issue is his pimp daddy agent….. History shows Cody will probably be out of shape, late to camp and injured by opening day.

Outside of that I think he would be great value at the end of the first round

    Please god no!!!!!!!!

  3. avatar ronnie says:

I don’t care who we draft in the first round as long as he’s the BEST player available.
Also how about Rex finally getting to draft a defensive guy. Last year he had none and this season a lot of people are talking about drafting Golden Tate.
WR is an easy fix. Just sign 1 of Coles/Holt/Curtis as long as they know their role as a backup/3rd receiver.

    I love it. Get him.

  5. avatar Harlan Lachman says:

I want no part of player who can play for one of the top, demanding college coaches yet who can report with a straight face that he is now in the best shape he has been in since high school.

Cody is a wasted pick waiting to happen for some team. I hope it is not ours.

Coaches who think they can motivate losers are mistaken.

  6. avatar Bent says:

Call me Mr. Picky but I’d rather draft someone who can contribute before 2012.

Why do I say that? Not because I think he’ll take a few years to get up to NFL standard (actually, I think he’d be incredible value at 29), but because Keels (apparently) does not take into account the cap rules when negotiating deals with his clients, so his demands are likely to make it impossible to fit a rookie deal under the rookie cap and comply with the 30% rule. I therefore anticipate a holdout, which would probably mean that any contribution this year would be delayed because he would miss camp and then there may be a lockout in 2011.

This might be less of an issue if Cody is a late first rounder instead of a top ten pick, but I think the main reason he has slipped that far is the fact that Keels is his agent, causing some teams to shy away altogether (as is my inclination) and also seemingly advising him badly in the run up to the combine/pro day portion of the offseason.

Ironically, the guy I most wanted from last year’s draft was Andre Smith, but with the fact that Keels was his agent giving me serious pause. The way they botched his contract negotiation seriously set back his development, so 2009 was kind of a waste for Smith, who I still think had number one pick talent.

  7. avatar WW85 says:

The Jets definetely show some propensity for High risk-high reward players. Cromartie, LT. We took a good look at Plax, still toying with Brandon MArshall.

With his agent, I can see him holding out until after preseason, coming in fat & lazy.

The other side is he gets motivated to play football, he comes in top form & we have him & Jenks dominating to create a new Sack exchange.

I think the risk is too high but I also know the Ghost experience will make Rex/Tanny do their homework.

  8. avatar Wolf says:

No way. Bent is right, whoever drafts him will most likely not be willing to pay him one of Alvin Keels’ absurd contracts.

He has holdout written all over his face.

I’m liking Golden Tate for this team more every day.

  9. avatar Bassett says:

    come on AKA Drew …

… don’t you want to see the pictures of Cody at Keels Off Tha Heezy Summer Pool Party? :P

  10. avatar CWPOST1993 says:

Stay away from this guy ! Much better options out there. Last thing we need is another project. Mike Lupati G, Jared Odrick or even WR Demaryius Thomas will fall to us.

  11. avatar MrJetGreen says:

The big question about Cody is what will his weight be after putting several million dollars into his wallet? I would not take him in the first round.

  12. avatar GANGGREEN says:

Aren’t you all missing the big picture…WIth Jinx still here wouldn’t he be a perfect mentor for a player like Cody? With Jinx’s re-occuring back issues how much longer does he have and we need depth at DT to make it through this upcoming season…Also like JInx the Jets could put a claus in Cody’s contract concerning that he keep his weight in check and maintain an offseason work out regimen that has him ready for camp and the upcoming seasons…A risky draft pick yes but plenty of potential to solidify the center of this Jet defense…Could you imagine both Jinks and Cody as on the DL at the same time..Opposing running games would be non existent…

  13. avatar JetsFanInSouthFlorida says:

    GangGreen,

Same could be said for Jenks mentoring a guy like Odrick, who doesn’t have Keels as an agent, doesn’t have a history of being out of shape, and could actually be a player that plays on more than just 1st down, goal line, and 2nd and short plays.

  14. avatar rusty sanchez says:

the only thing i like about mt cody is one cannonball by this guy could shut down a keels pool party…i say stay away if we get him at 29 somehow keels will try to get top ten money for him he will be a training camp holdout and want a pay raise within 2 years

  15. avatar James in TN says:

Keels is the only reason i would not want cody

  16. avatar James in TN says:

he keels your career just ask leon

  17. avatar Marvel says:

Is it me or is Kris Jenkins the best DT/NT in football when healthy ? When I’m watching a Jet game it’s hard to tell who’s more valuable him or Revis . I watched a couple Redkins games & he’s much better than Haynesworth .

With that being said, Tell me MT.Cody can be As good as Jenkins & I’ll take him … If not No thanx .. The Keels factor realy makes me mad also .. Because the guys not getting the big check from LW so you no he’s gonna use these rookies for as much as he can get .. It’s sad & why do they choose him , I don’t get it ..

  18. avatar david harris says:

terence cody will probably fall as far down as the end of the 2nd round. if the jets are satisfied with taking him there then we may see them go after a wr in the 1st round, potentially even trading up to that 10th pick to take dez brant. i do not believe eric berry will fall nor ndamukong suh. I also don’t think Taylor Mays is worth a 1st round pick either. I look at mays and see gholston (its important to note that i dont see gholston as a bust yet. he was drafted as a linebacker but he played de in college. if he bulks up and gains another 30-40 pounds, which could also mean eating a lot of steaks, he could be the dominant dt the jets are looking for. on almost every play last year that he was in he occupied 2 linemen, and on several occasions he hit the qb or almost got the sack. the guy is not a natural line backer and unless they get the perfect coach to teach the position to him with patience, like the coach calvin pace had, he wont ever become what people expect of him. chances are the jets dont have that type of patience and they should use him for what he’s best at. i look at gholston and believe if he can bulk up lets say 20 pounds of muscle, and gain another 15 of eating steaks on a consistent basis, he can be a future julius peppers.) Now what i mean by that reference is that while Mays may be very good, he will take atleast a few years to develop properly, and maybe never develop at all. He’s good enough on run coverage, but if the ball is thrown in his direction he’s easily juked and then burned. Aside from those 4 players i can’t really see the jets trading up for anyone else. They have their running backs set now so i can’t see them trading up for CJ Spiller. They got Cromartie so I can’t see them trading up for a CB. Obviously one DE/DT will fall to them at 29, maybe more than 1, so theres no real reason why they should be trading up 19 picks to ensure themselves a position to get one of them.

Now… This year is very loaded — talent wise. And many teams have different needs.

I see Sam Bradford going with the #1 overall pick, especially if his shoulder is healthy. If it is not 100% i still think he’ll go number 1 but there will be more speculation leading up in the draft.

I see Okung going second. Detroit needs to protect Stafford after a year where he continuously got injured because of missed blocks.

Pick 3. Here is where it gets very very tricky. Cleveland traded Brady Quinn and released Derek Anderson. They have Brett Ratliff currently listed as their starting QB. And we all know that Mike Holmgren, the new Brown president of operations, is not going to rebuild a team without a qb. The browns however do not have the 3rd pick, in fact they have the 7th pick. If they can trade up to the 3rd pick then it dramatically changes the entire draft board. Jimmy Clausen will go 3rd.
Bryan Bulaga will then presumably go 4th.
I then see the Bucs trading up from the 7th pick to the 5th pick to draft Suh.
Gerald McCoy will then go 6th.
Now Kansas City can go with Eric Berry with the 7th pick, but i do not think they will. Their offensive line needs a dramatic upgrade. Cassel is only efficient when he has time to throw, like in NE. Not to mention that Kansas City now has a running back for the future that will only thrive more with a better offensive line. Look for Kansas City to draft an OT with this pick, either Bruce Campbell or Trent Williams.
The Raiders already have 3 safeties with a lot of potential. They will not take Berry here. My guess is that they also draft an OT, which will be either Bruce Campbell or Trent Williams –whichever one Kansas City passes on.
Buffalo is in complete rebuilding mode. They don’t have a quarter back, they dont have an offensive line, they dont have a #1 receiver (i think evans is a #2), and they are changing into a 3-4 defense, of which they have no nose tackle. Bryant is an option here just because they are in need of receivers but they wont have a qb to throw it to the receivers. Both qb’s that are hyped will be gone by the 9th pick so they wont be able to draft a qb, presumably they will give edwards another shot. Their really isnt a quality OT worth taking here at 9. So i think they’ll go with Dan Williams, nose tackle.
Which leaves the Jags here at 10. They are in desperate need of fans, Tebow will supply it, but no one is gonna take him remotely close to the 10th pick. Eric Berry will be available and so will Dez Bryant. Mike Tannenbaum will have his choice here if he decides to trade up. It’s a long haul though, from the 29th pick to the 10th. They’ll have to part ways with atleast 1 or 2 players that will immediately benefit Jacksonville as well as their 29th overall pick. 29th overall pick, Dwight Lowery, Eric Smith, a 5th, and 2011 2nd round pick… Jacksonville gets Tebow at 29 for cheaper than they would have at 10. They get Lowery to play CB alongside the 2 CB’s they already have, Lowery could also be reliable back up if mathis gets injured again and after mathis leaves next year. smith showed promise last year, he’s hard hitting, he’d compliment their defense very well. They’d also get the Jets 5th and next years 2nd. The Jets would then take Berry.

By the way the Jets can always wait till the 2nd round to draft Reshad Jones. I feel like he’d fit amazing in this system. He’s got great hands, he’s huge (6’2, 215), he’s fast (ran a 4.4 40), and he’s as hard a hitter as you will see. He’ll be around at the end of hte 2nd round and the Jets don’t need to break bank for an undersized, somewhat light hitting Eric Berry (by light hitting i dont mean that Berry doesnt try for the big hit, he just doesnt have the size or frame to tackle the big guys). In that case the Jets can draft up for Dez Bryant and move Cotchery to the slot (i dont know why they would though, Cotchery is not a slot receiver). Or the Jets can keep their 29th pick, draft a DE/DT or draft Golden Tate who actually will be one of the best slot receivers in the league.

    @Marvel

Revis is more valuable. The fact we still had a top ten defense after jenkins was gone speaks volumes about how much revis contributes.

I didn’t know that Keels represented Cody. Before I would have been happy to get him at 29. Now, not so much.

  22. avatar brian311 says:

i think cody has bust written all over him. he is a big body, but his lack of strength and work ethic is alarming. throw in keels to the mix and i would pass, certainly in the 1st round. if he is there at the bottom of the 2nd round i would consider it

  23. avatar Bent says:

Right, the later you pick him, the less of a factor Keels is. Let’s say you have to overpay him by 20% to get him in on time, that will probably be ten times as much money in the first round than it would in the second round.

Anyone with questionable work ethic can be a bust, but his skillset is very enticing. Legit two gappers are few and far between and he has all the tools (and then some).

I credit the Jets for doing their homework at least.

  24. avatar GulfBreezeJet91 says:

    brian311,

Lack of strength? Are you buying into the “Underwear Olympics”?

22 reps isn’t fantastic, but better thsn nothing. I’d rather consider his bench/squat max than repetitions of 225. Lower body strength means more…

People question work ethic/conditioning, well dropping 31 Lbs tells me he’s trying. They say he’s a 2 down player, newsflash! MOST NTs ARE 2 DOWN PLAYERS! Are you gonna keep a run stopper in on 3rd down, which the “passing down”?

  25. avatar Brendan says:

Whoever called him a 2 down player doesn’t realize how agile he is. He played FULLBACK for Alabama. And it wasn’t ilke he just fell forward to open holes, he has a fast first step and is a quick big man with pretty good feet. Sounds familiar? Because he’s Jenkins. He has potential to be the type of player Kris Jenkins is. Jenkins can mentor him to eat healthy (but still as much as a buffalo would) so he can maintain his size and strength but be healthier and as light as possible. People forget there were character concerns about Jenkins before he was taken, and again before the Jets traded for him. The only concern is Keels, but as has been said his bargaining power is decreased later on in the draft. A DL who was overweight and is drafted at the end of the 1st with character concerns shouldn’t let Keels be too ridiculous (I hope…) so I think that risk isn’t as bad as with Leon.

  26. avatar James in TN says:

David Harris, yes it is official Gholston is a bust.

  27. avatar mike s. says:

This guy is a tough call.
If you just look at this size, strength, footwork, and ability to make plays, he is a very rare talent. The Jets front office is pretty good at evaluating character. If they determine that the kid can be disciplined and will learn from his mentors (Jenkins and Pouha) then this is the guy. If he develops he could emerge as a D-line anchor for the next 7-10 years. Those type of players are rare and worth taking a swing at.
My bias is to pull the trigger and grab the kid if he falls to #29.

  28. avatar Brendan says:

James, not true. There’s an unofficial 3 year rule. A LOT of great players take 3 years before they “get it” and Gholston hasn’t had a ton of stability to learn from. Give him one more year before you make anything aofficial.

  29. avatar Tos9987 says:

All teams need to boycott anyone Keels represents cause he is rediculous

  30. avatar rusty sanchez says:

my only problem with keels is if mt cody has a halfway decent year keels will be seeking a new contract and causing problems

  31. avatar Max says:

Pleeeeaaaase, stay far, far, away from “Mt. Cody”. The only motivation he has right now is getting drafted ergo the “getting in shape”. But once he is drafted, Me. Keels will think he is the best player in all the NFL – without a doubt a “holdout”. To put in perspective for all New York fans, he would be the football equivalent of Eddy Curry of the Knicks. And we all know how that’s working out…
