Link: Could ‘The Flip’ Taint Super Bowl Bid?

By Bassett on 21. Mar, 2010

Gary Myers ponders if Woody Johnson’s coin flip issue will be the determining factor (I don’t think it will) in whether the Jets and Giants new stadium will get to host the 2014 Super Bowl.

[New York Daily News - New York Jets owner Woody Johnson's flip out could have detrimental effects if Super Bowl bid fails]

Why would the NFL want to hurt the Giants cause they were mad at Woody?

It has nothing to do with it…..I for one could care less if the SB comes to the Tri State area. and there is the whole “it will be freezing” thing also

    “Woody’s billion dollar blunder”?

Come on….that has to be hyperbole, surely.

The slinky isn’t going to win the bid anyway (unless someone presses the wrong button, as happened with the London Olympics), but if it loses, it’s going to be because Woody Johnson got angry at the commisioner? Seems a bit unfair to the Giants if they lost because of something the Jets side did.

Seems like Myers is just speculating so that he has an excuse to bash Woody in the future.

The ironic thing is that most Jets fans didn’t seem that bothered that the Giants get the first game (based on comments on this site), and seemed to feel that the first preseason game and week one MNF was a better deal, so Woody’s rage may have been displaced. I’m not sure how important the Superbowl bid is to Jets fans, but if they had been punished by losing some draft picks or something, that would have probably caused more of an uproar.

I bet they do blame Woody if New York doesn’t get the nod.

Don’t believe Woody’s comment on the coin flip will have any impact on the Super Bowl decision other than to provide a good excuse to vote against it. The real reason is the weather in the Northeast which even if it were a domed stadium, it’s out our control.

Let’ see if the NFL owners are willing to lose money to have a Super Bowl in the Northeast.

To add…. I think Woody was correct in the way he handled this. He felt he was betrayed by a guy who “works” for him.

He had heard the Giants were “pining” for the first game. He suggested a coin toss ….which was rejected by Goodell. Days later Goddell flips a coin and the Giants win?? Legit or not its just came off as shady.

I could care less if we have the first game or the SB but when a guy put up money for an “equal” stadium …he has the right to get pissy about things

ireally think the superbowl up here in the first place was not gonna happen but at least the commish and other owners have someone to blame now instead of jus saying no like they were gonna do in the first place

didnt mean to imply woody is a moron. i like the fact that he had balls enough to call the commish out, although in this situation, for the good of the league, he prob should have kept it in house

You kinda have to understand where Woody is coming from:

I get the whole “lil brother” or “step child” thing and thats fair to a certain extent, but this whole thing is all about ” Spy Gate”.

That guy screwed the whole NFL and everything credible that it has stood for. Listen to some of the recently retired players or any other player and they’ll tell you where there’s smoke then there’s fire, and Goodell dropped the ball heavily on that one. Even if that videographer lied about the video’s that he taped the Rams SB walkthru, that stuff dont matter……

“Sorry guys I get pissed everytime I think of it”. But Godell and the NFL tried to tie that whole case around “if this guy has footage of the Rams walkthru then we’ll investigate from there. How can this guy who’s been cheating the NFL since he was hired by the Pats in 99 by recording all of his opponents hand defensive hand signals, guilty of having a video library of all teams by then, and get caught by the league and nothings happened. Yeah, the submitted a draft pick and yeah he was fined, but those were just slaps on the hands. These guys cheated the league and that was a huge integrity insult to everything the NFL stood for. I pretty much laugh when the talk about Roger Godell and how he runs a tight ship and rules w/ an iron fist……. Its all B.S. to me. I think that it was such of a huge black eye on the game and b/c it was his first yr on the job, that he had to sweep it under the rug. Granted you have the ” Players Association”, but the “Owners” run Goddells vote and maybe if he would’ve really investigated like he should then many many players wouldnt feel this way.

And many owners wouldnt feel like there getting screwed when something as small as a coin flip happens in closed doors.

The sad part is when they got caught cheating, Goddell actually released a statement that he was going to Foxboro like that wednesday and the pats better submit all videos that they have in their posession.

So let me guess, your going to investigate a bust, but your going to schedule so they can get rid of the evidence…….. Wow, weigh to commish, commish.

Also funny to and i’m done: It was something I think in SI about when the Pats played the Bucs in a Preseason game and the Bucs slaughtered them….. They played again during the season and the Pats destroyed them… Charlie Weiss, met Monte Kiffin after the game @ the 50yd line.

Charlie said, ” Good game coach”
Monte said, ” Good, yeah right you guys killed us”
Charlie said, “Yeah, we did we recorded all of your hand signals and knew what you were going to run”

Granted you still have to stop the play and thats understandable, but when you know what play your opponent is going to run, thats 75% of the battle.

Am I right or over exaggerating.

If Woody hadn’t opened his mouth, the Jets would have gotten screwed! And, he was right for being pissed about not having a rep witness the coin flip. In fact, if Woody hadn’t bitched, we would never have hosted the first MNF game at the new stadium, or gotten the prime time Thanksgiving night game!

Good for you Woody! Don’t take any crap from the league office!

This is why I hate Gary Myers, he makes it sound as if Woody did something wrong, and the Giants have to fix it. Screw Them! Woody protected the Team’s interests, as I staed above.

Come on jet fans, it’s one thing for a fan to chose sides and treat a team like a step child.I read that the coin flip was done in secret without anyone from the two teams, the results were then reported to them,WTF? If you guys don’t realize how important the game can be for the jets franchise, then……

Anyone who seems certain that there won’t be a Superbowl in the Meadowlands needs to actually read up on the subject. Before this fiasco, the Meadowlands was the favorites. Owners generally reward each other for building new stadiums, and the Jets/Giants have a plan to heat the stadium and keep its attendees as warm as possible. This is very real and if the Owners don’t hold a grudge backing Goodell (who has the Owner’s utmost respect) it is very likely.

Well actually I may not have “read up” but I do think the game itself in a foot of snow would be stupid. Any idiot can see that it would ruin the game regardless of how warm the people watching it are. So instead of reading up, smarten up dingleberry.

That’s mature. Part of the novelty of the first outdoor Superbowl in a cold weather city would be the weather. They would obviously have pregame snow removal plans and if it snows during the game that’s a good thing. That’s part of the fun of the whole outdoors thing. It’s to get away from the perfect conditions that a dome offers. Before the coin flip it was the FAVORITE to win the bid. If no single city of the final 3 gets 75% of the vote, then the third team is eliminated and then the final two go into a head-to-head vote. There is a very good chance that they would that vote against the other final two teams, especially with the goodwill that the Mara’s have earned over the history of the league.

You’re right that wasn’t mature, I apologize. I just really feel that there is something wrong with having the leagues biggest game in a place where the weather can be a big factor.. I mean you remember the Colts vs Bears when the RAIN (just rain) affected game play as much as it did. I personally thought it was the worst in recent history.. I don’t think its smart. Sorry again.
