RB Coach Wants As Much As LT Can Give

by Bassett on March 21st, 2010 at 12:30 pm

Jets Running Backs Coach Anthony Lynn understands that LT has some commitments on the West Coast, but urged the team’s newest running back to be as much a part of the workouts this offseason as he can be via Jets Confidential.

“I asked him to be here for the offseason program and he’s going to be here as much as he can. He’s married, he’s having his first child, so I understand he wants to spend some time back on the West Coast with his wife’s doctors . . . I just told him we need his leadership presence from day one and get to know the guys and get going.”

I’m not aware of the child’s due-date, and I imagine it will be hard for LT to jump back and forth … our seven week old is a handful, and I have to admit that time, sleep and energy are all things that are at a premium right now for me. I don’t know the man, but as for me, I’d hate to have been unreachable should my wife have gone into labor, and there’s just no knowing when it will happen. I’m sure LT will do as much as he can, but what remains to be seen is how quickly he can get his family out east and thus participate fully in the program.

Life been sucking so bad its crazy I feel like ive been on the edge like the walls been closing on me kinda like when sanchez threw a million picks against Buffalo LOL! I dont know what to do. I feel like the end is coming any advice Jetties?

  4. avatar Joe Bummer says:

He should seek out some advice from Antonio Cromartie on how to avoid being there when the child’s born.

  5. avatar hank/naples says:

Why should that even be mentioned by Lynn? Doesn’t he talk with LT at all?

It’s not like LT is the second comming of Farve and allergic to preseason workouts!!!

Cut the guy some slack Lynn, LT is TWICE the pro you are and i’m sure he has solid reasons to be there!!!

  6. avatar Tom in Raleigh says:

Great reply Bummer! Haha. Love it.

  7. avatar Jets4life says:

Who would you rather have the jets draft at 29th overall jerry Hughes or golden Tate?

  8. avatar Bent says:

We know all about the legendary offseason workout regimens of Curtis Martin and Thomas Jones (two guys who always seemed to suck in preseason for some reason), but what about Tomlinson? Any of you West Coasters know about his offseason routine? Is he a guy that needs the work, will he put in a lot of fitness work in his own time or could he actually benefit from the rest?

  9. avatar Green Lantern says:

    JERRY HUGHES!!!!!!

I remember a LT story about him “running the hills” in Cali during the offseason similar to a Jerry Rice workout. I would suspect the guy stays in shape…….but if i was him I would be at the facility ASAP to get involved with his new team. He has to know the “legend” of TJ and his presence in the locker room.

When I had my son the first 2 months were brutal. This is why people have in laws….lol

    Bent-

I remember a report on LT some years back (it might have been on 60 Minutes or a show that used a similar format), showing LT to be a conditioning freak in the off-season. That he’d go off on his own and run some steep hill or staircase (I can’t remember exactly) over and over, day after day. But the point was that his workout routine in the off-season was impressive, strenuous and self-imposed.

  12. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Drew-

Guess we saw the same show. . .

  13. avatar Bent says:

So, he seems to be cut from the same cloth as far as that goes…

Let’s hope if he sucks in preseason, it’s a pre-cursor to a Curtis/TJ type season, because you know everyone will be panicking and second guessing the move!

  14. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Bent-

Unless, LT rips off a couple of 100-yard games, or some major gains, or some clutch TDs early in the season, the second guessing is going to happen over and over and over again.

I pity LT if he starts slow, or blows a third and one in an early game, especially if it’s that first week on MNF.

  15. avatar Brendan says:

Those hills you guys remember are actually sand dunes behind his house, harder to run up. LT is a very professional player. We’ve all heard the reports that he sulks or is selfish, but that goes against the majority of articles I’ve read about him. He takes his job very seriously and has a pretty intense off season program. I think what Lynn means most by what he is saying is that he wants LT around Greene as much as possible. He’s not calling LT out, he is just expressing how much positive influence LT would have over Greene in how to prepare for the season and just continue the work TJ did with him last year.

  16. avatar Rob Nacarano says:

His baby is expected in June. I read somewhere that the Hotel where LaDainian stayed, when he visited NY, there was a big basket of fruit/food basket for his wife who was expecting a child.

Also, I heard that LaDainian is already in NJ for the start of offseason workouts.

    So what’s the problem?

  17. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Brendan-

Yeah, now that you mention, I do remember the sand dunes. And, yes, they would be harder to climb.

And, yes, I agree: I think Lynn wants LT around, not for conditioning purposes, but to meld into the team, which includes (as you point out) becoming an influence on Shonn, but I think it also has to do with the guys becoming a closely knit unit. Which is a huge feature in Rex Ryan football.

  18. avatar Brendan says:

I agree. I think that since LT is legitimately excited to be in NY that he will make every effort to be here as much as possible. His family should always come first, but I think he’s excited to start this opportunity with his football family and will be here as early and often as he can.

BTW, Bassett I forgot to put it in my last post but that is an adorable little guy you got there. Congrats, he looks like he’s doing great!

  19. avatar Bent says:

Great point, having him there is more important in terms of pushing Greene, who will be the alpha male in the backfield by some margin if LDT isn’t there (especially with Leon not ready to compete).

  20. avatar TannyVision says:

As a father and a Jets fan (in that order) I would counsel LT to be there for his wife and soon-to-be-born child. The more time spent with his wife, taking partnership for this baby, and sharing in the decisions and preparations, the more the bonds of fatherhood are solidified.

He will have plenty of nervous energy available to use up while running those mountains and stairs in between visits to the doctor and shopping at the baby furnishing centers. He may even come to camp in the best shape of his life.

Advice to Lynn: Don’t push LT. He seems like a responsible person and will put the work in. After the first few weeks following the birth of his baby, reality will set in, and he will want to spend more and more time bonding with his teammates and putting in extra work at the training facilities. He will garnish the respect from his teammates soon enough. Even if it isn’t from day 1.

    Bent,

You obviously don’t have children (or forgot). If LT feels that he needs some extra rest, he would more likely choose to be busting his ass for the coaches than spending 24hrs straight catering to a new born. (That’s what au pairs are for). lol

  21. avatar Green Lantern says:

Im curious how did Taylor Mays get bad in Coverage in a year? or How did USC mask his bad coverage skills?

  22. avatar Ben Nevis says:

I agree with the fathers on this thread: being there for my daughter means more to me than anything. Period.

What I think Lynn and Rex want LT to realize, though, is that he has another NEW family now: the Jets.

As evidenced by the Cortland program, Rex wants his players to be a closely knit unit, one that plays for each other, one that has each other’s back.

It is, I would say, one of the cornerstones of Rex Ryan football.

  23. avatar Bent says:

TV – no I don’t, but I’m well aware of the demands a new baby will put on you physically and emotionally. Good point and one I didn’t consider when making that comment!

  24. avatar joe c from new haven, CT says:

    MASHALL, MARSHALL, MARSHALL!!!

  25. avatar Eddie DiGio says:

The Jets should give LT a grace period

Like others have said, let him work out being a husband and a new father FIRST, get his family situated then come May- devote himself to the Jets and being around his teammates

I really dont think its going to be a problem though- LT has had some moments where you scratch your head but in no way is he a bad guy…plus he is regarded as an extremely smart player and I wouldnt be surprised if the coaches talk about him in training camp as being well ahead of the curve

  26. avatar Johnny hector says:

Hey Sexy Rexy – Take a deep breath and relax. Life has a way of throwing curve balls when youur looking for fast balls. Sleep off the drinking and take one minute at a time.

  27. avatar Le' Sean Roberts says:

He’s a responsible, mature man. This should be an issue, its his right, it should not be “want” to spend time back in the West Coast with his wife’s doctors, it should be “need”. Anyhow he’s an excellent veteran, this shouldn’t be an issue. If it were Terrell Owens, Odell Thurman, etc. then I would be worried. This commitment is over-dramatized, more like ridiculous. He’s not going off to war in Vietnam to fight Charlie, requiring all his focus, mental strength, etc. Today, easier said and done.

  28. avatar Bassett says:

Fellas, thanks for the kind words about Eliott, his mom and I think we’re going to keep him! :P

  29. avatar toddrsmith77 says:

I’m so nervous about 7:32:00 AM. Diehard jets fan living in cali – 7:32:13 AM has a hige reputation for being a primadonna and latorsha (his wife) running the show, advising him to run out of bounds etc. L t should move to the east coast like any other player would upon a trade and benefit his wife and team as a major part of the reason wwe signed him was leadership. Richard seymour did the same thing last year.
