Mike Florio Hurrying to Become Next Perez Hilton

by Bassett on March 22nd, 2010 at 12:13 am

mikeflorio.jpgFor the foreseeable future, I’m done with Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.

Sure, I’ll still scan his site to make sure I’m keeping up with stories for you all, but don’t expect me to link to anything that he’s writing about any time soon.

As best I can tell, Florio has a severe priapism when it comes to bashing the Jets. I don’t think it’s unfair to say, but as best I can tell he’ll never give the team credit for much of anything, and I’m done sifting through his stale Seinfeld or Office references just to find links to stuff that I’ve likely already read on Daily News, Newsday or the Post 12 hours prior.

Rather than post his ridiculous premise on why Rex Ryan is a feebleminded ninny with no locker room control — all because he underwent lap-band surgery as an intervention to help his health — I’m going to post comments that were made on his site in reaction to his own emotionally stunted prose.

Read on after the jump.

1) Haha you’re such a d—, Florio.

2) Horrible Florio.

3) … how about a little empathy and understanding? Weighing 140 pounds soaking wet in no way qualifies you to pass judgement on anyone with weight issues.

4) Seems like a pretty needlessly judgemental article. I get that it’s the offseason and there’s not mountains of news around, but criticising him for being undisciplined when he’s been a pretty successful coach just seems like unjustified editorialising.

5) Florio perhaps you should stick to pretending to analyzing things you know a little better … you are clearly talking about something you know nothing about. Perhaps this blog would be a better if you had a little discipline to research a topic before writing about it. Too bad there is no surgery for lazy journalism or you would be a prime candidate!

6) Wow, Florio, way to be a d-bag on this one… you are aware that Rex Ryan tried some old-fashioned methods of losing weight and didn’t do so well, RIGHT!?

7) Florio, Grow Up.

8) This is a ridiculous story.

9) Yikes, even as a Pats fan…this article is harsh

10) Florio continually tries to be funny by stooping to new lows. Yet his jokes fall flat and he just looks like a bigger moron. Sellout. Not funny. Find another line of work.

11) Is this offseason too mundane for you to feel the need to submit this kind of useless personal information about another human being? Seriously…WTF? This article sucks …

12) You are a d-bag Florio. I sure hope to God you don’t have any problems or vices. They guy has an eating problem and he is taking some step to help. Just a like smoker getting nicotine patches. But I am sure you have a perfect life and have complete self control over everything. …Real men look at people’s accomlishments and skills and make judgements. You look at his weight and make your judgement. A new low for you, but probably just seeing your true colors.

13) Keep making fun of him, Florio. It just shows your own lack of self-esteem …

14) the idea of willing supporting and encouraging such trash journalism makes me feel dirty.

15) I bet that you spend the whole day tomorrow trying to make amends.

Deliciously, Florio actually sullied himself in a descent from his ivory tower to make a statement on the subject in the comments. I’m sure he’s done it before, but it’s the first time I can remember him ever doing that.

To be clear, I’m not going to strike down what other writers on TJB do, I’m banning myself from any links to PFT. I’m just sick of feeding (albeit crumbs compared to their total readership) this beast anymore.

Our thanks to JetsFan4Life for sending this in.

    let me at him!!!

  2. avatar EddieC says:

I’ve been absolutely, unbearably sick of Florio for about a year and a half. He is a pathetic man on a high horse

  3. avatar joe c from ct says:

screw him he is just mad because he cant get laid without paying for it. I heard about this guy. Last name Florio first name JON!!!

  4. avatar joe c from ct says:

    CHUMP!!

  5. avatar Jake says:

Bravo. It sickens me that a football columnist (who not only is very catty in his rumor reporting but is more often wring than not) actually got credibility by getting sponsorship from NBC.

  6. avatar Mike says:

He runs a football news site where he always constantly have to give his opinion on certain subjects like Injury reports or more recently the NFL’s overtime rule. He constantly complains about this year’s NFC Championship Game because his Vikings did not get a chance to touch the ball in OT. Too bad them fumbled the ball 8 times in the game, they would not have to had to worry about that overtime. I digress though, He constantly hates on the Jets. I do not think I have ever seen him say something positive about the team. He did pick us to win the AFC Championship though, which I should have known to be the kiss of death for us considering his preseason Superbowl pick was Pittsburgh and Washington.

  7. avatar Shane L. says:

I just recently started checking out PFT and I’ve been kinda obsessed until the last couple weeks when every Jets related article is just oozing with sarcasm and veiled (or not so veiiled) insults. This guy is a major ass and has to be a Pats fan otherwise I don’t get where all the hate is coming from.

  8. avatar Bassett says:

Mike. Excellent point about the OT thing …

  9. avatar monty says:

I also am done with him. I would check his site 10 times a day at least for news but this was rediculous. If I wanted to hear fat jokes I would go to someone who had some talent and creativity.

  10. avatar Jeff says:

Bassett, I totally agree with you on being done with Florio. I usually check his site for any info in the off-season, but after this article I’m done with him.

The fact that he can’t even muster the smallest bit of sympathy for the man, and applaud him for taking a step in the direction of trying to get his weight under conftrol is just disgusting to me. And what’s even worse here is that the article serves no point but to start a TMZ like atmosphere of finger pointing and hatred in his comments section.

Florio forgets the fact that Rex Ryan tried dieting at the beginning of the last season and it wasn’t working. I say good for Rex for realizing that he’s been struggling with this for a while and not being ashamed to get help. I mean even the quotes in this his article said that Rex has everything in his life that he wants right now and wants to be around longer in order to enoy them for a long time.

What a cheap shot. maybe Florio should take a stab at some actual journalism next. Can’t wait til he encounters a situation where he needs surgery to prolong or improve his quality of life.

  11. avatar Kevin1234512346 says:

    what a tool i’m pissed

  12. avatar Jon Presser says:

he’s like peter king, with less random irrelevant personal stories and more unfunny, terrible jokes. both of them are awful writers.

  13. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Bassett-

Why not link to the Hutch piece about Rex? It’s short, but it’s mostly just quotes from Rex, and you gotta feel for the man when you hear him talkin about the battles with his weight.

  14. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    One more thing, Bassett-

Are you up and posting this late because of the new baby?

I remember when my daughter was the age your son is now. The unpredictable way they sleep, it turns your night into day, and your day into night.

  15. avatar jetsfan0906 says:

Maybe florio and prisco should hang out together…they probably already do. ive never seen something like this published by a “professional” writer. my new list of hated writers reads as follows
    1.)Florio
    2.)Prisco
    3.)Carrucci

and have you guys noticed tedy bruschi is now in love with the jets?

  16. avatar CCDC says:

It’s clear that to me that Florio is one of those sports writers that has a chip on his shoulders. When he was a kid and the picked teams for pick up games, he was probably the last chosen after the fat kid and the girl. I guess it a good thing he doesn’t cover the WNBA also.

  17. avatar Bassett says:

    Ben-

    lol …. YES …

theyre will be some more on this today but I got a few disgusted emails and thought was appropriate to address

  18. avatar Green Lantern says:

I didnt get to read Florio’s “article”….Do I want to?

  19. avatar Jake says:

Green Lantern, so he doesn’t get more hits, I’ll sum up the article so you don’t give him another click. He talks about the surgery but then mentions that if he were that disciplined he never would have gotten that fat in the first place and he can’t expect to lead 53 football players and expect them to stay in shape if he can’t remain disciplined himself.

    Florio is a tool.

  20. avatar rusty sanchez says:

awesome you compared him to perez

  21. avatar MEL31602 says:

Green Lantern- Basically he just kills Rex for not being able to manage his weight on his own and wonders how he can expect his players to keep up with their weight control when he can’t. That’s why there are no other fat coaches in the NFL (note the sarcasm there….)

  22. avatar Brendan says:

He put up an “update” where he apologizes if he offended anyone, but still doesn’t believe his article was in poor taste. Then gives some sob story about he lost 50 pounds as a teenager, you know, when your hormones are raging, body hits puberty, testosterone pulsates through your body and 1 out of 5 kids morphs from a fat kid into a roman statue. I mean really, Florio, comparing your triumphant passage through puberty to Rex making a potentially life-saving surgery is beyond cheap. The thing is, Rex has been completely healthy for years, he doesn’t have weight-related health issues. This is a preemptive surgery because he doesn’t want to ever have to deal with them. He tried the week-long liquid diet, he’s tried tons of remedies. He needs to eat to energize his busy, endless day and just one of those guys that’s genetically big. Screw Florio, guy is a fear monger and slime slinging gossip columnist. I never went to PFT before and sure aren’t about to start now.

  23. avatar Wolf says:

Mike Florio just wants attention. Stop giving him any.

  24. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    Bassett-

    Thought so–LOL!

If you’re still up, here’s the link to that (short) Hutch piece on Rex and his weight-loss surgery (a story which makes you feel much more sympathetic to Rex):

    http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2010/03/ny_jets_coach_rex_ryan_talks_a.html

  25. avatar Green Lantern says:

    Thanks Mel….Wow Florio an a$$.

  26. avatar greg sec130 says:

This is a guy who once reported a rumor that Terry Bradshaw died in a car accident without making a single phone call to confirm any relevance. That says all you need to know about his goals in life. It is not to get the story right or report real news.

  27. avatar R in CT says:

If I want my regular dose of anti-Jets rhetoric, I’ll read Cimini, thanks — at least he’s well-informed about the team, refrains from personal attacks and is an actual professional journalist!

Seriously though, stopped reading PFT a few years ago as it was clear they were more interested in getting themselves over than presenting anything resembling “sports news.”

However, I would add — as others here have suggested — it’s fine to point this out, but I wouldn’t go on too much about it and lower yourself into a shouting match with him. Don’t feed the trolls, as they say. The best thing you can do is just ignore him and thus, diminish his voice, which is his power.

  28. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

Anyone who cannont be objective should not be in journalism

  29. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    R in CT-

I agree, and didn’t read the Florio piece for that reason alone: do not feed the trolls (even when the trolls are in charge of the blog itself!).

Besides the hateful take on Rex’s struggle with his weight, it’s bizarre for Florio to argue AFTER the 2009 season that RR lacks the discipline to lead his team.

I mean, if Rex couldn’t lead, how the hell could the Jets have reached the AFC Championship game—and in RR’s FIRST YEAR as a HC?!

The team played their a$$es off Rex.

  30. avatar reality jet fan says:

How could someone do this for living and get it so wrong. The one thing i think rex did better then anything else was get his team to play hard disiplined football.

  31. avatar Ben Nevis says:

    That should have been:

The team played their a$$es off FOR Rex.

  32. avatar Andre Hawkins says:

Florio is a little man, in every way shape and form.

  33. avatar AKA....Drew says:

The list is getting longer of potential people I will choke out in 2010. The leader keeps changing but Florio is probably the leader in the clubhouse.

  34. avatar Harlan Lachman says:

Gold Kewpie to Bassett for elevating thejetsblog.com by addition by subtraction.

    Thanks.

    harlan

  35. avatar Jason says:

The whole success of PFT is amazing to me. The run crazy stories and op-ed pieces and the site is pretty basic in terms of design. Yet somehow they have carved this big following by being a tabloid type “news site”. They get some good tidbits every now and then relating to contracts and trade talks, but the site is largely gossip with attempts by the guy who runs the site to be witty with subtle and no so subtle digs and players and teams.

  36. avatar Zack A. says:

Why is this only a problem with Rex Ryan? There are other overweight coaches, and I never here about them getting criticized for their weight. Andy Reid, Mike Holmgren, Wade Phillips, Tony Sparano, why don’t you anything about those guys?

  37. avatar Brendan says:

I mean, Tony Sparano wears a muu muu on the sideline. If I was picking anyone, it’d be either him or Andy Reid who is slowly morphing into a Walrus. At least Rex has some world class chompers that brighten up a room.

  38. avatar ramble914 says:

Another name to add to the BOYCOTT list is Gary Myers. After this Sunday’s piece about Woody’s coin flip outburst, I’ll never read the Guy again.

  39. avatar Angel Navedo says:

I’m with R_in_CT. Florio’s work on PFT hasn’t been on my required reading for a long time. I don’t like incendiary journalism.

  40. avatar ramble914 says:

    Fat coaches past and present:

    Wade Phillips
    Andy Reid
    Bill Parcells
    Tony Sparano
    Mike Holmgren
    Eric Mangini
    Tom Cable
    Mike Smith

    Rex ain’t the only one!
    Mike McCarthy

  41. avatar ramble914 says:

McCarthy should have been after Smith.

  42. avatar Bent says:

As far as I can see, all Florio does is re-report what other writers have said and passing it off as news. There’s nothing wrong with what he does, after all that’s how most blogs operate. The difference is that he seems to make himself out to be on a higher plane than any blogs, which doesn’t seem to be justified.

The only original content they seem to have is via their own interpretations of the salary cap legislation, which are more often than not wrong.

They do have sources, but post stories without using them and then correct them later, which strikes me as an odd way to do things. It’s as though they see it as more important to be “breaking” a story (often in an inaccurate fashion), ten minutes after Adam Schefter, compared with doing it accurately, half an hour after him.

  43. avatar dtrain says:

I think i hate him now more than Franseca

  44. avatar Jason says:

Bent- I think their method of “breaking a story” is really what kills me sometimes. They just post things to be the first to post it. I cant count the number of times in a month they follow up a first post, with a clarification, followed by another “this is how we hear it”, followed by a “final word on the subject” post. Its kind of crazy.

FWIW, Im sure part of their problem with the Jets is that they cant get info from the team. The Jets are as tight as any organization out there when it comes to details.

  45. avatar Brendan says:

Jason, that is true, but the Pats are even more secretive and I never see PFT have an ax to grind with that organization.

  46. avatar Ed says:

He is on the nets 24/7/365. That’s the only reason anyone reads him. He does post so much stuff in such detail. However, I personally delt with him and he is an azz, plain and simple. Now with his new NBC deal he’s a super azz, and I agree with Bassett: he never says anything good about the Jets.

  47. avatar Andy says:

Good work, my friend. I am convinced that he could not care less what is thought about him- all he needs are links to and traffic on his site. While he may genuinely be a jerk, he plays it up for traffic. If more people would avoid him, he would just fade away.
