NFL.com seems to have put the cart before the horse. While citing a Mike Tannenbaum interview on ESPN late last week, the headline reads “Tannenbaum: Jets will not use first-round pick on CB” on the piece on the league’s website. So where does that notion come from? Clearly not Mike Tannenbaum himself.
“We felt that we had to improve that position. So Cromartie was the key to the offseason because, looking at our options, it was the Cromartie trade — or it was the 29th pick in the draft. To get that out of the way, we really enhanced our draft because now we can say that whatever happens in the draft, we can take whoever we want. Move up, move down we can get what we want. Without Cromartie, at the 29th pick in the draft, we would have taken a corner.”
Mike isn’t the kind of guy to speak in absolutes … at least not to the media.
Never did Mike say “now that we have Cromartie, we certainly won’t be taking a corner at #29.” All he said was that the team would have felt locked into taking a corner at #29, but now they don’t have that urgency because that spot is filled. It doesn’t mean that the Jets still won’t take a corner, Tannenbaum never said that, just that it’s not their priority. While I don’t expect the Jets to nab a corner in the first round, the Jets options are now more open as a result of trading for Cromartie … nothing more.
Now that the this misinterpretation is out there, the best part is going to be watching who apes this article, without really reading it …

Speaking of the draft, I really hope they snag Myron Rolle in the later rounds.

We are drafting a defensive front 7 guy in the first round.

The Jets and Mr T are great at using the media as a smoke screen during draft time. Anything the media reports will have to be taken with a grain of salt in the next 4 weeks.
BTW…Did anyone else read that Holmgren stated he does not like Jimmy Clausen’s game and will not draft him? Now I happen to agree with him but why would a guy picking that high in the 1st round play his hand about a potential top 10 QB? Smoke screen or just dumb??

Yeah I was confused when I read that article. All Tanny said is that he didn’t NEED to take a CB at #29. He never said he wouldn’t take one. It actually wouldn’t surprise me at all if the Jets decided to draft a guy like Kyle Wilson. Rex loves CBs, and the Jets definitely need a nickleback. Personally, I would rather wait until the 4th or 5th round to draft a CB.

ronnie,
I wouldn’t be too sure. How often do the Jets actually do what we all expect them to do? It wouldn’t shock me at all if they took a player at any position except for RB, C and QB.

They’ll probably go BPA there. If the best player is a corner, so be it.

Exactly, Dylan. Did anyone expect them to get Revis, Harris, Keller, Sanchez, etc.? This team never does what the draft pundits think, which is usually a good thing.
-
Brendan,
Even last year EVERYONE thought that the Jets would take a WR (or maybe even 2) in the draft. I don’t think it will or should happen, but would anybody really be surprised if the Jets traded up for a guy like Berry? The Jets will address their LB and D-line positions, but it wont necessarily be in the first 2 rounds of the draft.

I really hope Jimmy Clausen goes to the Bills or the Browns. I’m a Notre Dame fan, but boy do I hate that d-bag. I’m just excited for the Dayne “Jesus” Crist era to begin.

i completely trust what tanny is gonna do in the draft he is able to make moves to pick up studs ie Revis Harris Mangold Keller And Brick… does anyone else get the feeling that tanny has an ace up his sleeve and on draft day hes gonna whip it out

Not to get all nerdy, but this is a great example of a classic logical fallacy called “denying the antecedent.” Converting Tannenbaum’s statement into the language of formal logic, he said “If we did not have Cromartie, we would have picked a CB in the first round.” NFL.com interpreted that as the equivalent of “if we do have Cromartie, we will not pick a CB in the first round.” Those are not logically equivalent statements.
Dorky digression concluded.

Led, you’re reminding me of the LSAT. I never want to hear the word “contrapositive” again.
If A=B, not B=not A, no other logical conclusion can be drawn from that.
If we do not get Cromartie, we will draft 1st rd corner.
We did not draft a first round corner, thus we did get Cromartie. That’s it.

We have set ourselves up for anything we want to do in the draft. I would be happy with Kyle Wilson, Kindle, Brandon Graham, Hughes, or a trade down.

Mr T is the man.
